To Hell And Back by Kayamon 2011-09-05T23:14:00
Best LD48 game I've ever played. Gave you 5 stars on everything except audio. It's kinda repetitive and annoying :)

Best LD48 game I've ever played. Gave you 5 stars on everything except audio. It's kinda repetitive and annoying :)
Incredible graphics and sound!
Really hard to control, I had to skip level3 - I cheated and copied level0 over it :) and still couldn't pass a further along level with yellow walls.
Maybe if the time for each level was 3-4 times longer, it would have been possible to pass without an uber-precision mouse (and hand).
I liked it! :)
One of my favorites!
Thanks for the feedback CaptainFresh & lorancou :)
We found ourselves EXTREMELY tight for time so indeed we have some bugs. Among them is the difficulty to leave rooms, as lorancou noted :) Sorry about that.
Try clicking as close as possible to the bottom/edge of the screen. You will get it in the end.
Also, for everyone who's "rubbish at adventure games" but wants to see the entire game, I've uploaded hints to the game webpage. Take a look: http://www.yonispants.com/SenileQuest/hints/warning.html
For hardcore adventure gamers, I advise against looking at the hints. You can do it! :)
You're the second person to complain about the revert :)
Thanks :)
Thank you MagnesiumNinja!
Cool idea, but it seems like pressing the buttons does nothing. Except for naming the slugs, assigning them occupations and feeding them - nothing worked, and what did work didn't make a difference. They all died, time after time. The lack of music and sound effects really makes it quite boring and stresses the overall feel that nothing is happening. But again - cool idea, I would love to play it once it is fixed.
I agree with ramoncb who agreed with Dietrich Epp. I needed some of that. Plus, some in-play instructions about what I am using. Also, hard to know where I should have gone next.
I had a lot of fun! Shame it was only one level, though.
Yes, I had some trouble with the slow mana as well, but in my second attempt I really grasped how it works and everything. It was fine, in my opinion.
What I would change is just add "X out of Y" for each food type. Then I'd know how far have I made it through the level. It helps to know while I'm walking around far away from my awesome dragon so I don't have to make the round trip twice or more.
Good job! Obviously, graphics and music were great.
I liked it a lot.
Like many have said before, I was missing some more indication as to what I can eat and what not.
I didn't have problems with the hitboxes. And the jump was not a balance changer for me, since it makes me avoid food and slowing me down. So I suppose it's abusable by people who have hours on their hands.
Thanks for the comments!
If you like the game but find it too glitchy, we recommend that you at least use the cheat mode (type LION + level number) to see all 8 levels - each one is a different experience (especially level 5...)
NEW! Updated website - the game soundtrack is now available for download!
COMING SOON! Due to popular demand - a bugfix will be released this weekend.
Hey everyone! I just released a bugfix version. Anyone who suffered from any of the glitches described above or others, go ahead and give it a second try :)
vilya: Thanks a lot for the praise :)
I believe I fixed the falling through platforms bug in the 2nd version. Did you play the 2nd version or the original?
-- Yoni
goerp, the soundtrack is available for download free of charge, public domain (check the website). Go for it :)
Awesome graphics! The sound was really nice at first, but then it got a little tiring.. and the volume of the chimes is really high. Love the use of the theme, but the stages are tricky and a bit slow, while the meebas die quickly without giving much chance to move ahead.
I didn't understand what "different properties" meant. Can they collide with shapes in certain colors, for instance? Tried my luck for five minutes and gave up. It's too hard an Asteroid to master =)
The density is a bit too much and the screen got really small after splitting.
This was really funny but I got stuck after using the guitar - empty room with no doors.
Clever but a bit too frustrating. I'll try again later and see if things get better after the beginning
Really liked it. Good amount of challenge and fun mechanics.
290 Omnivore (Omnomnomnivore?)
Nice game (Even though I got stuck in the third level since I couldn't shoot for some reason). I liked the music.
Audio loop was a bit too short, so it got a little annoying after a while, but a very good game otherwise
Great looking game, and lots of fun! I wish it had some music though.
I like your graphics, I love the "?"/"!" enemy, and... wow, is that a level editor? :D
Gotta respect the time you guys put into this :)
Btw - judging by the art, that's technically a cube.
I could not get past the second level, and it took several tries to beat the first. It's too hard :(
Regarding the opposite color mechanism, while it's intriguing artistically, I think it unnecessarily adds to the difficulty of the gameplay. I ended up mashing space and trying to hit enemies with all possible colors because I would never remember which color is the opposite of which, except black-white.
Also, the first time I played this I hit "start" and I did not know what to do to beat the non-black enemies. On-screen instructions would help, or just lose the "rules" button - show the rules as soon as "start" is pressed (or even better - in "real time" during a sloooooooow and easy tutorial level).
The "rooms" in the background were very interesting artistically, and it's a shame I couldn't get to see much of it!
Very nice graphics. Seems like the game is missing though...
Apart from the bug where if you die once you become invincible that was already mentioned above, for most enemies (the ones that shoot straight) there is just not any incentive to kill them. It's much easier to avoid them. This consists of probably the first 1/3 of the game.
It would be more fun if killed enemies randomly dropped a powerup for your weapon. Then you could also beat the later stages.
Nice background!
Excellent game. I'm not sure if it's possible to win (I gave up after the third attempt) but I loved trying new dialogue paths every time.
GENIUS. (Although I did have to smash a game I liked :|)
Keeps crashing in the middle of the 4th screen, is it a known problem? I really want to see where it goes :(
I kept leaving the screen by mistake and losing power. Otherwise a fun game.
Nice graphics, but I had no idea what I was supposed to do and I kept dying for no discernible reason :(
This game used to be my life.
Took me a few tries but a surprisingly fun game
Wonderful game. Only thing that annoyed me was the meditation sound which was pretty annoying
Nice and simple. Reminded me a bit of QWOP (This is a good thing)
Very nice game. Could use some music, though
It's not easy predicting where enemies are going, specifically because it's not graphic but explanatory. I guess that was the point, but to me it felt kind of boring. Good use of the theme though.
Nice one! Great use of the theme :)
Lie down
Try not to cry
Cry a lot :(
Super hard but amazing graphics. Like an alternate dimension gameboy game
It was hard to understand how to operate things, I basically found myself pushing buttons and hoping for the best. I liked the music though, nice idea overall.
Pretty fun game, even though the difficulty increased a lot on the second planet.
I couldn't really understand how to play the game, even after reading the help screen. It is unclear how to destroy the enemy crystal and the outcomes of the soldier battles, etc.
The second minigame was very hard to do, I had to try it 4 or 5 times before succeeding.
For some of the games 10 seconds is a bit too much...
Simple but original idea, loved the different endings...
Cool game! I kind of found myself walking aimlessly at some point because I didn't know what I was supposed to do except picking up items. LOVED the insulting tower! :D
Great game!
The theme felt tacked on but a pretty fun game - I played it through to the end (pretty rare when rating games) and enjoyed it. The mannequins were a great idea too.
Nice graphics but kinda buggy on my computer... I would like to see a finished post-compo version.
Wow, what an idea. Too bad there isn't more to explore...
Nice and simple, I really like the animation.
Thanks for the feedback, everyone!
TomboFry (and everyone else playing in IE) - we are aware that there are bugs when playing in IE, and we hope to find some time to try fixing them, but meanwhile (and in general) we strongly recommend to play in a different browser. The game seems to work well in Chrome, Firefox and Safari.
Hard frustrating game, and no real reward at the end (also no real explanation why exactly 10 seconds)... I eventually got it by doing nothing until 6 seconds have passed and then mashing A+S for the remaining 4 seconds.
Really intriguing, though I didn't manage to finish it even after getting the pills. Is there a walkthrough somewhere?
Awesome graphics! Fun and challenging.
QWOP on the toilet, hilarious (though I never managed to win)
What.
(Also: Cool game)
Very nice animations :)
The game should specify what keys are possible to press (besides the "press space to continue") and generally what the object of the game is. The first try was impossible in all games and in general it's impossible to get the apple, spacebar only jumps 3 pixels high and no other key seems to jump.
Couldn't play because I have no friends :(
Just kidding. Nicely done! I love the artwork on this one!
I didn't get home :(
I am a mathematician and I loved this game. Great job!
Could not understand how to play :(
Great game!
It's really hard to control :( And I think you shouldn't make the "right" key a level skip key, it took me a while to figure out why the screen keeps changing :)
In my previous games I used "N" or "S" as the level skip key.
The first 3-4 tries I couldn't figure out how to move, and died after a few seconds. It is very unforgiving!
It would be better if you had a title saying "press space to move" and either give me grace-invincibility for a few seconds, or don't shoot arrows so quickly.
I got 15 flowers and died. Does the game continue the same way or does it get different? It would be more fun if it got gradually harder and of course if there was a possibility to win (I don't know if there is one)!
Wow. Short but beautiful on many levels.
I didn't understand what I'm supposed to do, how to pick up items (and what/where they are) or exit the first room. Some characters appeared and I killed them but not sure why.
Very nice!
Stage 3 is hard :(
It is hard to run away from bullets, as the camera moves pretty violently if you go backwards.
Nice and original idea, though I didn't make it very far.
I didn't understand how to solve the game :(
The narration is great, but could use subtitles.
30 seconds well spent. PROGRESS!
Very nice game!
Great game! Nice riddles, pleasant audio, and a cute story, matching the theme!
Nice concept, but after beating 2 levels it seems to just repeat the same way. Would love to see this game with a continuation/ending! I really liked the white/black health bar!
The mechanic of jumping while switching world was a bit confusing at first. Also, picking the correct portal feels a bit like guesswork.
Otherwise, very entertaining game, and the graphic style is perfect!
It was not really clear how to play this game :(
I put a crystal in a structure and teleported to a second place, but then I didn't know what to do...
Interesting idea, too bad it's unfinished :(
Best interpretation of the theme so far. Ashamed to admit I checked my email several times during the game :(
Made me want to go outside and sketch, that's something I don't usually get from playing computer games.
Pretty cool! I Liked the simplicity, the gameplay got a bit frustrating at times but overall it's a fun game.
Very nice game, but the instructions were not clear (it took a minute to understand what I'm supposed to do), and only when I saw the playthrough video I realized you could change existing connections...
One of the best games I've played so far, amazing graphics and ideas.
Very nice concept!
The second level was a bit too hard for me to pass :(
Nice graphics and music, wish there was more actual gameplay...
Does not load :(
the game graphics is amazing, well done, although it is buggy, right after making the first smoothie the you cant lead any more fruits into the mixer
Really cute game. Love the mechanism! I think some music could be nice. There's a bug when using Alt it doens't always show the numbers. Sometimes it would only show some of the numbers like 1 and 4 and if I press alt it will show 2 and 3 but 1 and 4 will disappear. I played the html5 version.
It was very hard to do the double-jump. Great graphics!
Unique idea, even if there's not much to do other than move...
Awesome little game! took me 41 tries to beat, most of them on the final puzzle. Would love to see an extended version of this...
Really cool game, good job! I will agree with others before me, a smoother learning curve would be great. Also, loading the boxes takes a long time, as you have to wait for boxes to go through again. Finally, even if I remembered where I put everything, I don't necessarily remember the silhouette for each icon - if you could, add the name of the items needed.
Great little game! Love the minimalist art. It's annoying that when you die the level doesn't restart automatically.
Really original idea and good graphics, though I only started to figure out the gameplay right before I lost...
Cool game. I like the graphics. I found it too annoying to use both mouse and keyboard at the same time. I don't think you should be able to jump on invisible platforms, it would make the game too easy. Also, I would make an opening screen with the backstory and instructions, it's a bit hard to read with the font color and size.
Nice entry, i didnt understand what do at first, and starting with powerful enemies is a bit harsh. the machenics was easy to comprehand.
Great game! The level design was fantastic, very tight and made me think.
I love how simple the mechanics are, yet very easy to grasp, after failing once I was able to immediately get the sliding doors. And you even managed to add a minimal, yet nice story! Level 4 reminded me of Portal :)
I will say that the music is a bit too upbeat for a thinky puzzle game; level 7 kept me engaged for a while and I muted volume after a bit because the music was getting repetitive, I'd go with something more chill.
Also, while I totally get the minimal graphics, I think a small change like a different color scheme after level 4 would've helped the story be more immersive.
Overall, great puzzler, I played it all the way through!
An amazing game, only problem was that I didn't realize you attack with X (I only understood it after literally pressing every button on the keyboard to see if it does anything). Then I understood that the weird, non-responsive close button in the "lamb" frame was actually telling me I should press X...
It is very impressive that you did so much in LDJam (whoa, a LEVEL EDITOR? WTF). But the gameplay could be improved. Basically what I did was force myself into a loop, block other trains from reaching this loop, and spend the remaining 3.5 minutes just waiting.
Very good concept, there were some walking bugs (got stuck in walls) so I couldn't complete the game.
Really good! We had a basic similar idea at first but didn't know how to develop it.
Couldn't get past the 1st obstacle more than once. The graphics are really nice, and the rotating gravity got me by surprise - it was a very nice element!
A nice idea with some funny bits, but I quit after a few rounds because there was no way to understand If I'm going in the right direction. Hopefully the final version will be better in this regard.
Great concept :) Not your standard programming game. But I guess you can get away with a programming game that actually shows the player code, if many of your players are programmers themselves :) Note - the first time I played, it crashed (the same screenshot that was posted above in the comments), but I tried again and the 2nd time I was able to play all the way through to the end. Some levels were really nice. It was confusing at times when I should use E, when I should use Space and when I should use Enter.
Great game! I liked the puzzles and I wish there had been more!
Objective does not appear in full screen. Only saw it when I couldn't complete the second level and exited the game...
Fantastic game! "Among Us" meets "Portal" :) Innovative gameplay! Had a blast playing it, one of my favorites of this Ludum Dare!
I liked the graphics! I agree with the other comments that the game is not difficult, and there's no advancement - no bosses (as far as I played at least) and the game is pretty much static. Solid jam entry.
Great game idea! It was a bit too hard to play though, I couldn't last more than half a minute or so without dying :innocent: also, it's a bit difficult to mouse-look without a mouse (with a laptop touchpad).
Fun little game! I played it against a 5 year old and we had half an hour of fun playing it (she isn't experienced with a keyboard so I played my character a bit slowly) :) we didn't use the destroy/build wall feature though, and it's not clear when it "recharges" - also, if you replay after a "game over", then the destroy/build wall remain unavailable after having been used in a previous game, which seems like a bug.
Fantastic little puzzle game! We also thought of doing a kind of "code monkey" style game but couldn't figure it out and you nailed it. It took me a few tries to understand what's going on but when I did, it was fun enough for me to finish the entire game. I wish there were more levels / more challenging levels. Great job!
Fun game, but I'm stressed now :)
@house-trap-charlie We haven't compiled a native version, but you can play on itch: http://yoni-ld.itch.io/business-munch (note - this is a slightly bug-fixed version)
@simono We didn't have time to animate the ceiling fans. Please imagine them rotating with deadly speed :)
@nobuna-no & @ubershmekel & @simono thank you for your feedback! :)
Thanks for the feedback everyone!
@ryan-dotsikas the "sometimes dying despite the monster not attacking" is not a bug - it's simply that we didn't have time to animate the deadly rotating ceiling fans, and without animation they look kinda turned off! :innocent:
@bamberga I agree about the jank but we focused so much on adding content and at-least-barely-playable gameplay to the game that we ran out of time to fix it! :)
@sibi I'm glad you liked it! In that level, you died because you jumped into the deadly-but-sadly-unanimated ceiling fans :)
I greatly enjoyed the fantastic art! The challenge in this game, for me, was to remember what I'm doing in each stage for the next round I get to play it. It would've been more challenging (maybe a "hard mode") if the stage continued interacting with the player while you're not in it (for example, run out of air in the underwater level, or be attacked by the enemies in the enemies level). The hardest level for me was the snow level - I kept falling through the chasm :) The game was fun and made me want to finish it, which I did, and my "strategy" was to keep the snow level for last so I would not switch out of it. I loved the fact that in each level you have different abilities. Part of the game for me was discovering what the abilities are in each level - after a few rounds in each one I figured out "ohh, so I can do THIS here". Maybe some visual cues could help with that. In the enemies level there was such a visual cue, the counter. It took me a few rounds to figure out what the counter is counting, and that's what made me realize that maybe I can shoot (because how else to take out the shooters?). When making our jam game, we also considered briefly the idea of switching worlds every 10 seconds, but dismissed it thinking it would be more "in your way" than a fun element. After playing your game, I am still not sure whether I would've liked it better as it is or as a sequence of 4 levels without switching, but maybe it could be taken further with the stage continuing to harm you, or with some interaction between the stage switches (like in Day of the Tentacle where you can pass items between the stages or like The Lost Vikings where all the switched characters coexist in the same stage). Overall, I really enjoyed your game! Great job!
I was amazed by the 3D modeling! It is obvious where you drew the inspiration from for the office layout and some of the characters! Well done!
The gameplay itself was a bit simple - I managed to get hired, but the coffee task gets a bit old before the 5 minutes are up.
I had fun! Nice game, and I really liked the artwork style. At some point, a "goal" was missing - getting more and more points without any end goal got a bit boring. Until then, it was fun furnishing the house :) 🛋
I enjoyed the cute and adorable light bulb character :)
The controls were difficult due to the collision issues. I kept getting stuck and not being able to go through the maze.
The darkness, together with the homogeneity of the maze and the lack of indication of a) where the maze will shift and b) where I should be headed, made this game too difficult and I couldn't reach the end of the maze (nor the easter egg).
Cool❄ game, man! 🥶
I had fun with the puzzles and played through all 8 levels. It probably took me 15-20 minutes to play through. Nice puzzle design!
A couple of things that I found annoying were: 1. Switching between keyboard and mouse every time I lose. Moreover, the "play again" button and the "done selecting blocks" button were not in the same spot on the screen so I had to move the mouse and click twice every time I lost, which was... often :) 2. The controls (particularly the ratio between jump height and walking speed, and the slide-to-stop) made the game pretty difficult and I kept dying. Moreover, I'm not sure but I think there's a bug where your momentum is not reset when you respawn, which caused further deaths. 3. Restarting the entire level when dying makes the game much more difficult :) 4. I wish it would remember my chosen block order when I die, rather than always going back to the default one.
The exe required admin permissions to run, so I couldn't play it :(
Can you make it not require admin?
Cute game!
Very interesting concept, and I really liked the character design. The gameplay itself was a bit repetitive, too easy and lacked a goal (no win/lose conditions).
The graphics were really good. I have some comments. The controls were a bit difficult to use, because unlike pool games, there is no visual cue / hint to show where your "pool stick" so to speak is placed, and since I was playing with a touchpad instead of a real mouse it was a bit difficult to control. There was some resolution problem (I played with the embedded player on the website), and I couldn't see the text on the top of the screen (which you can see in the screenshots) showing how many seconds. I noticed that when I put balls into the holes, it took longer than 10 seconds for the board to switch - I'm not sure if this was intentional or not. Finally, there is no positive endgame (I think... unless I didn't reach it) and the only way I found to reach a "game over" screen includes the words "you failed" on it - no positive outcome, you can basically only play until you lose (like Tetris) - I would have preferred it if you could "win" the game. Overall, a very nice jam entry! Great work :)
