LD45 — Start with nothing

You found nothing. by atraxgames 2019-10-16T10:50:19Z

Nice, fun, and slightly "meta" take on the clicker genre! I enjoyed it up until the point where I could drink beer -- after which I wasn't sure what to do. It would be great to have more stuff going on in a post-compo version! For now, a minor suggestion would be to center-align the item list, as it currently looks funny and leaves a lot of empty space if one switches to full screen (and without the full screen, it's a bit annoying to scroll up and down as the list grows longer): screen.png:

Stumbling upon meaning in an old town abandoned to its fate by ghust1995 2019-10-08T12:03:39Z

It's a challenging, confusing, but clever piece of hypertext. I loved the mechanics of discovery - wanted to say this reminds me of Her Story, but the previous commenter beat me to it :)

Nothing to Say by celia14 2019-10-09T12:59:20Z

Such a sweet game and clever concept! I've been interested in word/letter-based game mechanics, and this is a great example of one. I can imagine the effort it took to plan the dialogue so that the player can gradually uncover new letters and have the entire alphabet at their disposal towards the end. Fantastic work! I've also been hearing about Ink but had no idea it was possible to make something like this using it - I should check it out. Thanks again for making this little gem; I'm looking forward to your future work!

Drake Hits Rock Bottom by nervous-composers 2019-10-10T09:16:22Z

This was fairly fun (except for the bit when you stick to walls while jumping) - until I got stuck inside a platform, with no way to get out. Clipboard01.png Nice idea and graphics, but the physics needs work. I hope to see a post-compo version with some improvements on that front!

Dear Diary by Rodrigo DenĂºbila 2019-10-17T17:56:30Z

The aesthetics reminded me of the movies Dogville and Manderlay - very refreshing and works well with the theme! I loved the voice acting too, brilliant job there!

The story felt a bit bare-bones, but that's understandable given that this is a game jam entry. In a full version, I would love to have more agency over how the events unfold: currently, it feels like the game is sort of pulling the player along and telling them what to do (even if they may feel that the protagonist is making a terrible decision). I would love to have an alternate ending, either based on choices made during the playthrough or unlockable after getting the original ending. I also wish there was more stuff to explore: currently, the beginning of the game is basically wandering around the apartment trying to find the next area you can interact with; it would be cool if you could also unlock additional narrative clues about the couple's relationship. (E.g. why is Nick so secretive and doesn't tell the protagonist anything?)

There are a few minor technical things as well: e.g. you can type the password on your keyboard, but you cannot do the same for the safe combination; there is no way to close the drawer in the living room (so it can stay open FOR DAYS); and doors sometimes act up, either refusing to open on first try or getting the protagonist briefly stuck inside:

I did enjoy the experience, though, and I would love to see you explore this aesthetic and approach to storytelling further -- either by making an extended post-compo version of this game, or a different, longer game with a similar feel!

No.thing by adliberum 2019-10-08T11:51:22Z

Great take on the concept and nice dialogue! I can't for the life of me figure out how to get to the ending, though. I thought maybe I'd done something wrong and tried restarting, but the game just resumes from the same place.

UPD: Never mind, I did find it in the end. It was well-hidden :) Nice little piece!

Draw Your Own Adventure! by detectiveLosos 2019-10-09T12:15:27Z

What an awesome idea, and really well-executed, too! I'd love to see a polished and extended version of this released as a full-fledged game on Steam.

Two suggestions. I was a bit disappointed, after trying so hard to draw a girl with my nonexistent artistic skills, to have the game immediately call her "Karl" and refer to her as a "him." Maybe you could offer the player to choose the gender in the beginning? Also, I would suggest making the option to change the brush size more conspicuous - if I hadn't read one of the other comments, I'd have no idea it was there.

Inspiration. by F1Krazy 2019-10-15T18:59:33Z

Great little game! I was struggling to come up with an idea for LD45 for much of the first day (and at some point actually considered making a game about the writer's block), so I can totally relate to the story. I also love the colorful art style and the fact you made this in Pico-8!

Green Tea by karpopper 2019-10-09T13:35:44Z

I got stuck on level 6 - but that's likely because I'm bad at games! I enjoyed the nostalgic graphics and the idea of making a puzzle game out of what visually looks like a Wolfenstein-type shooter. I wish there was a way to strafe, which would make it easier to navigate. Also, in the full version, perhaps some kind of story would be nice to have, just to frame what is happening in the game in a meaningful way. Good job overall!

The beginning of the end by Thomas_Bringer 2019-10-09T13:27:46Z

I really liked the visual style and the overall premise! The puzzle design is nice, too. My wrist actually hurts after 7 minutes of using the controls, though. I know it's difficult to come up with a good control scheme for a hexagonal grid, but I would encourage you to consider other options: e.g Q/E/A/D/Z/C for the six possible directions, or a mouse/touch-based scheme, etc. I also wish there was an way to speed up the text in the intro and/or skip the intro altogether (or maybe I just didn't find it): it's not fun staring at a sentence for a few seconds after you're read it, especially so if you're replaying the game and have seen the intro before. Overall, very nice idea and execution, though!

adventure again by gamefive 2019-10-10T09:25:55Z

Nice little game! It would help, as the other commenters pointed out, to have some indication of where the destination is for each level. The aesthetics are really neat, but the dark blue background looks a bit off here - perhaps something like pencil hatching would look more in line with the rest of the visual. Also, I found the playable character movement to be a bit on the slow side. Some background music would be nice, too. I had fun playing the game, though! I hope you can develop it further.

Sneeter by bubblewandgames 2019-10-08T12:28:31Z

Combining RPG mechanics with a social media simulation (and a bit of metacommentary) is a really clever idea, and you did it well! I love the aesthetics, too. It would be nice to have some background music, though (or is it just not playing in my browser?).

Protoplanet by Guardaro 2019-10-08T12:48:33Z

I really like how simple yet effective the mechanics are. But even more than that, I love the aesthetics of this game, including the randomized backgrounds and the especially the music! The game is a bit too difficult for me, but that's likely because I'm just not a very good player :)

Kitty Litter Defence by Doodums 2019-10-09T11:05:46Z

As the other commenters have said, the visual aesthetics are just gorgeous! The gameplay needs work, though - but you're already aware of that. At one point, I fell off the board and the game wouldn't restart; instead, I could still move the camera around while falling deeper into the abyss. Some kind of tutorial/guidance would be nice, too, as I couldn't immediately figure out e.g. when to use the power-ups. In fact, it took me like a minute to realize I could actually move around, not just strike the dogs from inside the box:) Please continue working on this, I'd love to see this as a full-fledged game!

Oh, It's Nothing by Ein 2019-10-08T11:41:19Z

Really cool concept! I love the meta aspect of the narrative; I've also been interested in exploring game mechanics based on manipulating words, and this is a nice example of one!

I would make the full sentence that the player is constructing more conspicuous (bigger letters? Or some kind of highlighting?). I didn't even notice it at first, and was having difficulty keeping track of the words I was clicking. The progress bar is a nice touch. Oh, and one of the other commenters mentions music - I didn't hear any on Firefox, not sure what the issue is but maybe worth looking into.

I'd love to see the full version with more varied mechanics and some kind of narrative resolution.

Wanderings of a High School Boy by 2 Odd Diodes 2019-10-09T11:26:05Z

I absolutely loved the aesthetics of this game! I enjoyed the story, too, and the subtle social commentary. I'm not 100% sure I understood the story right, though, and I'll need to play this one more time to see if there is an alternative ending. Overall, great job! Perhaps you could add some music in the post-compo version to make it even more atmospheric.

Run Dash Go by Etch-light Studios 2019-10-08T15:20:33Z

I liked the minimalist aesthetics and the gameplay was fairly nice! The controls felt a bit flimsy, though, and there seemed to be a couple minor glitches. Also, this may been intentional, but I found it strange that you can hold left/right and the square will stick to an adjacent wall instead of falling.

Ludum Date 04:50 by irys 2019-10-15T19:09:37Z

Clever, funny, and well-written little game! Also, great job capturing the feeling of taking part in one's first game jam! The music is great as well (though it didn't seem to loop properly for me). Nice to recognize a familiar university in the background, too:)

Missing Characters by Benoit Freslon 2019-10-09T13:48:34Z

This is a really cool and refreshing idea! I've been interested in word/letter-based game mechanics, and this is a nice example of one. I got stuck at CAKE for a while, though, due to not being able to figure out what exactly "snapping" letters referred to. Perhaps slightly more guidance would be useful - including reminding players that the level can be restarted while they are playing, not in the main menu. Eventually, I cleared the game, though - and would love to see more!

LD47 — Stuck in a loop

ReBeat by Alex Davies 2020-10-24T16:51:30Z

Very cool concept! Looks and sounds great, too! I did find the challenge somewhat too steep for my skill, but I've never been good with rhythm games of any kind. It would be great to see a post-compo version with some kind of tutorial in the beginning (it took me a few moments to understand what to do). Also, I did find myself wishing there was a restart level button in the menu; and I wish the quit button asked for some kind of confirmation before actually ending the game. Very well done overall.

Stuck Machines by Fractal 2020-10-25T21:31:32Z

Looks great and the premise is very interesting! I wish there was some kind of hint system built into the game. I managed to lift the grating and open the door without really understanding how I did it, but then got stuck. Would be cool to see a post-compo version with a bit more scaffolding for the player!

Welcome to Station Alpha by Theo Ratkin 2020-10-24T19:20:17Z

Nice concept and great atmosphere! I wish this was a longer experience, but great job making it in 3 days :)
