LD28 — You Only Get One

Choice by mr.isaer 2013-12-16T13:52:00

The look is pretty cool. Yes, it was very short. :P It is not very clear what you are supposed to do. I needed a few tries until I found it out. The atmosphere is nice and the ending was interesting. Another thing is that clicking new game always caused me to already fire my first bullet. I'm interested to see this idea continue, it has potential I think.

Vega Core by PTSnoop 2013-12-17T16:21:00

Pretty tricky to control, a longer aiming bar would have been a bit better maybe. The graphics and audio is nice and when you actually manage to clear a stage it feels great.

You only get one... Potato Peeler! by cptalbertwesker 2013-12-16T16:35:00

I think this might be the best professional potato peeler simulator on the market right now. Good job.

No Way Out by Eniko 2013-12-17T16:14:00

There was indeed no way out for me! The aesthetic is nice and the sounds were too. Having the "thoughts" rushing across the screen and the heartbeat sound stressed me out quite a bit. I got eaten every time. It maybe could have been a bit clearer what you can or should do to get a better ending because in the heat of the moment I didn't manage to think of anything else once I found out the window is barred. Also it would have been cool if you could have been able to shoot yourself at any time with your last bullet.

Who ate all the pies ??? by DustyStylus 2013-12-16T12:27:00

This is a really cool idea. The music and sound effects fit nicely and make for a good atmosphere. The concept is fun and innovative. It's hard to find valid questions though. One improvement that could be made is adding more variations to existing replies and making it so the game recognizes more combinations. That way you feel like you're getting somewhere even if you don't manage to win.

Basically make it a bit more straight forward so you don't need to explain as much first, and you got a great game!

YOU ONLY GET ONE SPACEMAN by xk 2013-12-16T14:34:00

Very nice. The graphics are cool and the music and sound effects fit very well. The attached cable/tube on the space man was a nice touch. And the star field looks fantastic. Good work!

Make Tetrominoes! by Crowbeak 2013-12-17T16:11:00

Fun and interesting once you get it. (I was stumped at first :P)

This would work great on mobile devices and I can see people playing this for way longer than they anticipated.

She: A Game About Life by Hyde Wyvern 2013-12-16T16:30:00

For some reason I can't get past the title screen. Pressing space doesn't continue but makes a little "moop" noise. I'm liking the screenshots though.

Penguins Gone Mad by _zulli 2013-12-17T22:52:00

This is pretty cool! The enemies are fun and actually have decent variety. I liked the flying ones especially, really cute. The look is charming and it definitely scores bonus points for exploding penguins. I mean... exploding penguins, come on! How can you not like that?

If you want to add to the game, some more weapon pick ups would be fun. One tip about the background: Blurring it in photoshop or another editing software would take away the harsh edges and make it look further away.

Good job with the game, I like it!

Lost in Space by loxo 2013-12-16T15:24:00

Love the premise. It would be cool to see the other things you had in mind implemented. The traveling through space could be a bit shorter.

Asphyxia by Rahazan 2013-12-16T01:33:00

Absolutely awesome. I love the graphic style together with the music and the sounds. Stuff like this is why the artstyle seems way past "retro-style" to me. Back then it was often still about trying to make it as realistic as possible, yet not having the options. Now, games like these profit immensely from the style because it leaves room for the imagination, which is probably my favorite part about games like this.

Chocolate Clicker by Yoni 2013-12-17T16:17:00

How many chocolates can I get? Turns out: One. Therefor, this went well with the theme. Full stars for theme and humor for sure.

You only get one pixel by Folis 2013-12-17T16:19:00

A nice entry that uses the theme very much literally: You get only one pixel. The idea is cool and it seems people already tried to make pictures with it. I like it.

One upgrade in heart by Tonasz 2013-12-16T16:39:00

Nice idea with the rhythm game combat. If the hits had a bit more impact that would make it feel better I think. Nice job.

SinglShot by SamH 2013-12-19T00:25:00

Nice look and feel you got going! Its theme mechanic are working nicely, better than expected. I love the moving starfield, it looks like it has a lot of depth. Many others have a much shallower look to them.

Bowerbird Quest by mcapraro 2013-12-16T14:30:00

Really cool game and a nice twist on the memory concept.

Wilhelm's Escape by glovecat 2013-12-19T02:11:00

Really fun point and click game. I tried fiddling with all the stuff I could find and died so many times. He also refused to eat the coin, noting that he isn't a piggy bank. That was amusing.

One Sword by daviwil 2013-12-17T16:10:00

Nice job, graphics are cool. Atmosphere reminds me of Dark Souls or and some comics from the 80s. Having a different graphic for hitting the maiden or the dragon would have been cool but it was still fun to slay winged horrors.

Flee to Light by ryangatts 2013-12-16T14:20:00

Pretty cool idea. The graphics are nice and the lighting creates a fitting mood. I liked the enemies too, they were cute and relentless. Sometimes the walls can block your view, so walls becoming transparent might be a feature you could look into should you continue this. (And I think you should, it's fun!)

OneShot by Vanish 2013-12-16T15:25:00

For some reason this doesn't load for me. (Chrome). The website loads and the construct2 text gets displayed but nothing happens.

One Bullet, One Chance by YellowLime 2013-12-16T13:10:00

Aha, I found it! You asked in the chat yesterday if the screenshot was making the game look interesting. It did, and I went looking for it.

The artstyle is cool and everything looks exactly like you would expect it to in a western town. The characters I liked especially. The text progression seemed a little iffy, switching back and forth and sometimes misplacing the yes/no symbols. Even though I aimed at bottles and bandits properly it was also really hard to hit things for no apparent reason. If this is intended, adding a little "missed" or something like that would surely help.

The dialogue fit well and the theme was followed nicely.

UNO by wimmi 2013-12-16T14:07:00

For your first game this is pretty good! Good thing you entered it. If you keep it up you'll improve in no time and be able to make the games you want to make.

Thrust Issues by Gravedrinker 2013-12-16T12:41:00

Thanks guys. Glad you like it. I didn't realize it was so hard. I was even a bit worried it might be too easy haha. When I continue on this game I will add a few easier levels in the beginning so the player can get the hang of it more easily. Thanks for the feedback.

Thrust Issues by Gravedrinker 2013-12-16T14:25:00

Thanks YellowLime! I did have a few sound effects and music lined up but I didn't include them here because while they were made during the 48 hours they weren't made by me.

Would you say the thruster should be strong enough to break a fall?

And yeah, I thought getting into the landing zone no matter how would be more fun than having to land correctly, especially when trying to beat your own best-time.

Thrust Issues by Gravedrinker 2013-12-17T00:01:00

Thanks everyone! DustyStylus: I had sounds and music lined up which were made by someone else, but then got the game finished in time for the compo and joined that. And had to remove the music and sounds. :(

Thanks a lot for playing.

Thrust Issues by Gravedrinker 2013-12-17T03:55:00

Thanks a lot for all the nice feedback. Being able to skip levels with the right arrow was intentional but I forgot to mention it. I added it because some people found the game really hard and I wanted everyone to be able to see the rest of the game.
I improved the game quite a bit since entering the compo by adding sounds and music back in, having a better control scheme and adding more levels (including a few easier levels in the beginning so the difficulty ramps up more slowly). Thanks again to everyone playing, I'm so happy that people dig it.

Thrust Issues by Gravedrinker 2013-12-17T12:17:00

Thanks for the feedback. I uploaded a post-compo version where I used that feedback to make the game easier to start out with. It has an alternate control scheme now, which will also be listed in the "tutorial" text in the beginning. I also added the sounds and music back in which I couldn't use during the compo since it is a one-man show.

Last but not least there are additional art assets in the game, more decorations and some physics-boxes to knock over.

Keep it coming!

Thrust Issues by Gravedrinker 2013-12-17T13:48:00

Thanks ian_snyder, I just fixed that. Glad you liked it.

Thrust Issues by Gravedrinker 2013-12-18T20:00:00

Thanks primaerfunktion! And mize_VS_mildmojo: That would definitely be cool. During testing I always caught myself trying to beat my best time.

Thrust Issues by Gravedrinker 2013-12-25T19:48:00

@Eniko: Yes, the R key. It says that in the "tutorial" in the first room. :)

Thrust Issues by Gravedrinker 2014-01-07T12:24:00

Thanks sheepolution. Yeah it would have been nice to get a higher place but oh well. Maybe it was too hard for some? Almost every comment mentions how hard it is.
Or maybe I should have also done more to get people to notice it? Post more, rate even more etc. Who knows. Maybe next time.

One Look by bluemanshoe 2013-12-17T16:07:00

Very nice, but very touch. Slow and methodical is the way to go no, not like me trying to run past the monsters. They will get you sooner or later that way.
Good job and idea, I'll try and play it again for sure.

One Earth by seantheartist 2013-12-18T16:35:00

Nice idea and sprites.

You Only Get One Dollar! by VideahGams 2013-12-16T14:39:00

Hilarious idea, I like it! It maybe could have used a +X$ or -X$ notification when you gain or lose money. Well, in the end I lost all my money to Gaben's glory. Very realistic.

Javel-ein by managore 2013-12-17T16:27:00

Awesome graphics and feel to it. Creates a nice atmosphere and has a good amount of content. Well done.

Polytonia Music by Robinerd 2013-12-16T18:32:00

What a nice idea. I love rhythm games and this feels very nice when you pull it off. The challenge also ramps up well.

Mayor's Holiday by Corné Dorrestijn 2013-12-17T16:30:00

Interesting idea and concept. Depending on what island he's off to he definitely needs a gun. Or a lollipop maybe?

One Take by Sheepolution 2013-12-17T13:13:00

Absolutely brilliant. Highly recommended. Really good graphics, sound and an awesome idea to boot. Very interesting use of the theme.

Make it Count by tSwitch 2013-12-17T16:25:00

Can get really tricky! The audio and graphics are great and it's really fun to play. Theme was used well I'd say.

Serious Surgery by FrozenCow 2013-12-17T16:16:00

Very fun and a cool idea. I liked gameplay a lot. As someone else said having more gameplay elements would be cool. There is a lot of stuff you can do with the concepts. The sound and humor was also enjoyable.

LD35 — Shapeshift

The Blueprint by WitchBoys 2016-04-20T10:49:00

Cool idea and really nice style. I think maybe the background could use something other than just the flat blueprint color, though having it be the kind of blueprint paper look might be too busy.

I love the look and feel of this.

Stoopid Robats by Gravedrinker 2016-04-20T11:43:00

@WitchBoys Thanks, I'll try and make it more clear in the future iterations! :)

Polymorph by shane1090 2016-04-20T10:41:00

Great idea and ominous atmosphere. Also quite tricky. Nicely done!

Shape Rave by MintArcade 2016-05-09T21:36:00

Very nice. Love the music. The graphics remind me of the N64. (Not from the fidelity, but the style. Nicely done).

Project G.R.I.L.L. by vctr_seleucos 2016-04-20T16:08:00

Very very cool. The retro look and music is fantastic and gameplay very enjoyable. If I would change something in the future, I would make the levels have more variety more quickly. Introduce something sufficiently different looking on floor 2 already, to avoid giving the impression that's going to be the same kind of floor over and over and to help the feeling of progression. It's great that you get a different character with a different ability to play when you die.

One bug I encountered was gamemaker throwing an error when selecting the left form after pressing space:

FATAL ERROR in
action number 1
of Step Event0
for object objControl:

Unable to find any instance for object index '3' name 'objPlayer'
at gml_Object_objControl_Step_0

Anyway, keep it up guys and I'd love to see this as a more realized game down the line.

HappyNest by Black Horn Studios 2016-04-20T14:21:00

Awesome! Great graphics and feel to the whole thing, the music too. Very well done, and great to see a metal themed game, and pulling it off so well too.

AAA Wars by alexlemming 2016-04-19T08:50:00

I really like the idea and the concept behind this. The graphics are cool as well. There are some things that could make it better I think, in case you want to flesh it out more later:

The graphics could use some more contrast.
The delay on the controls is irritating and makes it feel very imprecise
A crosshair would be ncie
I think making the shooting faster would make it feel more enjoyable :)

I love the "small scale style" and the depth in the environment. Great job!

The Adventures of Box Boy by airdinghy 2016-04-20T10:45:00

Nice concept and execution, I really like the slow motion when selecting things, it helps a lot. The walking sound was a bit grating, but the rest was pretty good. Especially when you get pushed back.

Blink by samlo 2016-04-20T17:07:00

Really cool look and gamefeel, well done!

Inner Maze by Uson Chen 2016-04-20T15:41:00

Very cool, I like the music and atmosphere a lot. The music could use a better loop but other than that it's great. Well done.

Forest Mage by Lewwwer 2016-04-20T10:46:00

Really cool, I like the graphics a lot. :)
