Very interesting and fun concept. :D

bananabobbert 2020-10-06 12:22

It's a simple but good game. It has a good mood and the sections are not too long. Took me 183 loops.

connormck 2020-10-07 00:33

Fun concept! Seemed to be a little lagy for me, but other than that great job!

cwazywierdo 2020-10-07 00:36

Fit the theme really well! The controls were straightforward, but the game was kinda difficult (not that that's a bad thing). The music was nice too, but a bit repetitive at some parts.

biancamello 2020-10-07 00:37

Nice Game!

jimbly 2020-10-07 00:41

Great game, I *really* liked the music, so soothing and didn't get repetitive! The pick-up that changes my rotational direction really messed with me, took quite a while to get past that area. I often found myself about to die and realizing I had made a mistake a bit ago and it was far too late to do anything about it, which is a little frustrating (admittedly that's an issue in my looping game too ^_^). Maybe if I had two buttons and could toggle which direction I was looping...

My score:

(I *may* have accumulated an extra hundred loops or so while I was putting some dinner in the oven...)

petturtle 2020-10-07 00:42

Really nice music! The the controls feel good, but the difficulty curve feels a little steep. Consider making more easy levels or adding more checkpoints.

woett 2020-10-07 15:25

Absolutely wonderful game that I spent quite a few hours with over the past couple of days. For anyone who likes a challenge, try to tie or beat my pbs!

@Woett: Wow, such dedication! I can't even do that :open_mouth: Congrats on your world records!

@petturtle & @cwazywierdo: Thanks! Yup, I tend to make hard games. Every time again, I fail to remember that the game is hard without 3 days of playing/debugging

@jimbly: Thanks for your comment! And thanks for sharing your scores. Yes, it's a bit funny that you can see that you will not have enough room to turn around, but can't do anything about it. Oh well  With two buttons, of course, the game would be trivial. (Or maybe with a cooldown on the direction switch? Hmmm )

@connormck: Thanks for playing! In what broswer were you playing? I only tested Chrome so far.

@bananabobbert: Thanks, nice score!

jimbly 2020-10-07 17:47

@papaver Yeah, I was thinking maybe two buttons where one is go forward like it is now, and the other switches directions. I think it would still be pretty challenging. Technically, you'd only have three states "go forward" "loop right" and "loop left", which means it's in some way technically the same control scheme as "always go forward, a button for turn left, another for turn right", but because it doesn't map logically to that in my brain, I think I'd still get pretty challenged. Similarly, you could invert your controls (at the cost of theme) so you're always going forward and pressing a button starts you looping, and I think it would perhaps make the game much easier because it maps closer to the controls we're used to in games ^_^. I tried doing this in my head while playing (always hold the button down and then release it for a moment when I want to turn) but trying to release instead of press when I wanted to do something did not work with my muscle memory...

papaver 2020-10-07 21:48

@jimbly: Ah like that it would indeed probably still be challenging and confusing, because you still need to keep track in your mind if you were going left or right. As a back story, maybe something has to be brought to the other side of the vehicle to be able to turn the other way. This way you can see it, and it has a cool down. Interesting idea  I was indeed also thinking of inverting the controls, because we are used to take action when we want to turn right or left, instead of stopping doing something, but indeed for the sake of the theme (and because I like funny mechanics) I opted for this version. I just tried it the other way around, it might be a bit more intuitive. Maybe I'll make a shadow version ;)

peachtreeoath 2020-10-08 06:13

Wowww what a deceptive challenging game! My first impression of the mechanic was: "ok I get it this is gonna be on of those cakewalk games." I should've known better given some of your past games

I didn't expect you to lean into the narrow path idea that much. I also didn't expect the idle-looping element to cause me that much trouble. The combination of those 2 elements made this game very tricky, in a good way. It made each press of the spacebar delicate and important. Sometimes my brain would spaz out and just drive into a wall for no reason lol, because it was probably trying to figure out how to rotate my way out of the situation.

Very very enjoyable. 1-button games are challenging to do really interesting stuff with but you pulled it off. Obviously the game mechanics/levels are quite extendable as well.

PS. have you ever played Clu Clu land? Very much reminded me of it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QitNp1YjmPk

jofish 2020-10-16 20:33

wow, i'm bad at this one. i really liked the original concept (or at least i've personally never seen it before) and i thought the single-button control was really nice. very satisfying to play too, and i imagine a future version where you have extra fine control like choosing which way to rotate or how fast or what radius could also be really cool. well done!

yoni 2020-10-16 20:35

Really fun game! I had only a few minutes to play it now but I will definitely come back to this!

aevek 2020-10-16 20:45

I really like the challenge progression in your level design. It managed to get harder at a good rate without being too frustrating. Your mechanics also meant that every failure did feel like my own fault, and the restart time was long enough that I could see what I had done wrong without making me wait too long to try again. I did start to feel frustrated on the last level, I think because I was repeating the same section a lot without really feeling like I was achieving anything, so maybe just adding a few stars around the spiral could help with that? Great game, well done.

davidb 2020-10-18 12:49

original concept, understandable and playable immediatly, well executed.

mackandrius 2020-10-18 14:36

Excellent entry, I thought the mechanic fits really well within the theme and was very original, can't think of any other game that I've seen a mechanics like that in, which is great. Congrats!

sakura-magika 2020-10-23 00:11

My favorite game so far! I love how you made the character stuck in a movement loop, instead of a time / gameplay loop. The simplicity of the one button gameplay really suited the visuals and sound. The gameplay was very fun and challenging. I really like how you incorporated more mechanics in the levels, like getting the stars to open the gates.

The challenge of minimizing your loop count also makes it a puzzle game, though I'm no where near good enough to optimize playthroughs of the levels hehe.

conrad123 2020-10-23 00:24

Wow! This is really awesome. Exactly what (I think) Ludum Dare is for: to explore a cool concept. This was lots of fun to play and I loved the music. Great take on the theme as well. Keep pursuing this and you could have an awesome app on your hands soon!

acuriosity 2020-10-23 11:49

Simple and challenging gameplay. That last level was a doozy, almost gave up, but boy was I exited after I got the three stars and I didn't have to unwind through that spiral.

The directional change pickups provided a nice twist to the mechanics, it was satisfying picking one up, almost hitting a wall, getting tense anticipating a collision, then winding the other way.

There was very little that I grew frustrated with, other than my own abilty to accurately predict/execute the correct timing to exit my loops. On the last level, I did want an adjustment to camera movement, the camera moves up and down with my head, I would be curious to know how it would feel with a slight left/right follow as well.

Adding some effects, sound and or visual, to entering/exiting loops might feel nice/further reward the one mechanic.

Overall it looked good, played good, sounded good, created a cute atmosphere. Well Done!

lyje 2020-10-24 14:36

Super hard but also fun and somehow relaxing!

joll05 2020-10-25 22:01

Cool idea! I like the concept and the music was great. It was very difficult though. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but I think it got a bit frustrating at some points.

One thing I noticed in particular was that I would often realise that I was on a bad trajectory and stop to correct it, not noticing that there was a wall to my right, which I would then collide with. That also led to some situations that I couldn't possibly recover from because I would either keep going and hit a wall or turn to the right and hit a wall. One possible solution for this would be to have the snake rotate in place without moving when you're holding space. I feel like that would keep the game roughly the same, but get rid of frustrating moments like that.

Although overall, I still had fun. Good job!

joaog 2020-10-26 01:59

I loved this game! I found your game watching in a stream, by the way it's relaxing to watch and kind of irritating to play, but in a good way. This game could easily be a mobile game, it’s challenging. The sound is great and the graphics are very good, but I didn't expect to find a face or the silhouette of one. Great job!

papaver 2020-10-26 09:44

@joaog: You found my silhouette! :confetti_ball: I wonder how many people saw it. It's quite big, but if you're playing, you're busy looking at the player and obstacles. Thanks for playing and your kind comments.

papaver 2020-10-26 10:14

@peachtreeoath Thanks for your lovely comment! No, I had never heard of Clu Clu land before! What remindend you of it? It seems the player in Clu Clu land can choose which direction to turn, but indeed spinning round and round. (I just found on Wikipedia: '"Clu Clu" is an anglicization of "Kuru Kuru"; a Japanese onomatopoeia that refers to something going "around and around".')

peachtreeoath 2020-10-26 18:12

Yup it's a bit like that. You choose which direction you want your arm to grab, but then have to let go with the right timing like in Loop. I believe it gets a lot faster in later stages and that was tough when I was a kid lol. That's a great onomatopoeia actually, and not one I've heard of!
