LD23 — Tiny World

The Two of Us by scoopsy 2012-04-29T00:52:00

Hey guys, if you don't have a mac, why comment?

I think this is a good start to a game, but doesn't feel complete. I'm rating it as if it were, but keep at it. My main issue is the sort of randomness of whether I'm going to survive another second or two.

I feel the game could benefit a lot just by slowing the gameplay down a little.

Run, Unicorn, Run! by fprawn 2012-04-24T06:10:00

I love this unicorn! Glad to see how your game turned out. We had some framerate issues, but our mac-mini isn't a high spec machine.

It plays very nicely apart from that. Its very clear from the beginning how to play, and the movement is intuitive.

Tiny World Racer by Kinokochan 2012-04-24T05:46:00

note: i just had a friend test this game who's computer doesn't support shaders. The track is totally invisible, and as such unplayable.

I'll probably fix that and other issues later, maybe in a week or to. I'm burnt out now.

Tiny World Racer by Kinokochan 2012-04-25T17:48:00

Thanks for the feedback, guys!

Beerman: we made some mistakes in code with the way the cars stay on the track (causing them to float through sometimes). After we fixed this, I think the handling improved significantly, too, so I'd be curious to get more feedback on that point after our next release!

Tifu: Thanks! I am glad to hear you think animation would improve the graphics. It is definitely something we want to add, but I don't think Jade's engine is ready for skeletal animation right now. We might be able to do some procedural head-bobbing and wheel-turning, however.

I am really happy to hear that everybody likes the rings/track. It's my favorite part of the game. :)

TinyParts by basspenguin 2012-04-29T01:01:00

I enjoyed floaty a lot as well. In particular when coffeejungle needs to be saved the game did a good job of putting on floaty's metaphorical determination-face :)

Nook by PoV 2012-04-25T08:01:00

Really cute, and beautiful graphics! I've never been a fan of wall-jumping in 2D, but that's a personal nitpick. That aside, the jumping didn't always feel the most intuitive, but I picked it up after a while.
Changing size to solve the puzzle was a nice twist!

Overall, it ran nice and smooth, and I was invested in playing through to the end! Great job!

Tiny Archaeologist by toaster 2012-04-25T08:18:00

I played the swf, which worked great. Not sure if there's a way to not-die, but I'm having fun regardless. :)

The graphics, while simple, are rather nice! The warping/scrambling on the text looked awesome, and was very disorienting on the level itself, which I suppose is the effect you are going for! The takeaway for me is that it's a lovely little interactive story, told with a good sense of humor.

Keep up the good work!

LD24 — Evolution

Living Tales by tinyworlds 2012-08-29T19:38:00

Really interesting concept, and a great interpretation of the theme!
I wasn't sure why my fakeshrooms kept dying, or why more and more rats kept spawning without my summoning them, but it was fun to see the little town evolve and grow. :)

Overall, great job!

Mad Scientist Monster Maker by frosty 2012-09-01T22:32:00

I found the controls very intuitive. What a cool little game!
Even though it was simple, controlling the monster and smashing up the city felt just right.
Great work!

Dragonom by Kinokochan 2012-08-28T08:05:00

Thanks for the feedback on the mana bar, clavicarius & defiantburrito!
We were worried that players spamming cast would not be challenging, but it sounds like more enemies would have been a better option than slow mana. We'll definitely be tweaking with that as a stretch goal.

Dragonom by Kinokochan 2012-09-02T05:35:00

Thanks again for the feedback, everyone!

@tupperwarespoon: We are hoping to iterate on this game more at some point, and gameplay balance is obviously something that needs to be tweaked with a lot. Maybe more aggressive enemies is also something we could include (along with faster mana regen) to make the game a bit more fun.

Your point about the dragon is a good one too! I was thinking some additional UI to indicate his growth would help, but subtle changes to the art is also something to consider! Thanks! :)

Cubevo by NostraDamon 2012-08-29T21:44:00

Loved the way the game encouraged me to manage my gems carefully.
The graphics and audio both create a wonderful mood, and the level of challenge is perfect for the scope.

I felt a real sense of accomplishment when I finally beat it! Excellent work!

LimiT by Sakuyan 2012-08-30T19:37:00

Beautifully designed game with very pretty art!
I loved the simple concept and the way I was encouraged to continually interact with the environment.

Pacing between each stage got a bit slow sometimes, as there was often only one thing to consume per stage. That was well worth it though, as the final stage was amazing. I was very amused!

Audio would have been nice, but your amazing art more than makes up for it.

Badass by Sos 2012-08-27T07:44:00

Loved it! I saw some of your in-progress sprites earlier, and was curious to know where you were going with them.

The number of stages was pretty satisfying, and the different backgrounds and transitions kept the game feeling fresh. Nice work! :)

DARWIN MUST DIE! by mutuware 2012-08-28T04:37:00

Had fun playing this! The controls are a little unclear at first, but seeing the crosshair makes it intuitive enough to pick up fast.
The minimalist art works well - it gets the point and mood across.

Evolution Is A Boring Theme by iamwhosiam 2012-08-28T06:20:00

Just wanted to say thanks for this! My team was frustrated with the prompt too, and I think venting like this is a perfectly acceptable form of entry. Loved the humor. <3

Of course, I may be biased because I freaking love Pokemon.

The life of Cat by Amoaeba Junior 2012-09-02T01:17:00

Seeing Cat get old and die really got to me. Poor Cat. :(

Overall, I loved it. Taking the cat through his full life cycle clearly demonstrated evolution. This might even make a good educational game for teaching kids about natural selection + evolution.
Very good work!

EvoDragon by PixelOaks 2012-08-28T09:40:00

As the previous posters said, the art and audio are top-notch! I also loved the general concept and the way that you incorporated "evolution" into your game.

My one and only complaint is that the controls felt a bit clunky sometimes. Particularly, the lack of camera control in a 3D game where you are constantly looking around for enemies slowed me down a lot. Limiting movement to four directions in a 3D game felt a bit odd too. I often found myself running downward into rocks that I didn't know were there because my camera was clipping inside of them.

That said, I've worked in Unity before, and remember having trouble with these things too, so I know exactly the sort of limits you're working with here. What you guys did in such a limited timeframe is very, very impressive! Awesome work!

Triple Threat by rylgh 2012-08-28T20:02:00

Hey this is Jo! This was really intuitive, and a lot of fun!

It was easier to figure out than I expected. My laptop display is just a bit too small to show the full resolution for the web player, but that didn't impede gameplay and I could navigate just fine. I like that the dual keyboard controls mean you can play against either a friend or yourself.

Awesome work, Ryleigh!

This Planet is Mine by Perfoon 2012-09-02T01:05:00

Adorable! It's pretty hard to tell when the smaller bunnies are sick, but that's the only problem I'm having.

The little bunnies and monsters are adorable! I love that while the graphics are limited in scope, they work to create a very cute and original style.
Nice work!

Radioactive Space Bunnies by zimmy87 2012-08-29T23:35:00

The music and the concept are both brilliant!
The graphics, while simple, get the point across very well.

On top of that, the gameplay was very fun. I love that the dead bunnies persist and can be pushed, stood on, etc.
Nice work! :)

Gone With The Wind by Alface 2012-08-28T08:35:00

This game is simple, beautiful, and a lot of fun! <3
The effects and art work very well together, the audio is catchy, and the gameplay is that perfect mix of simple-yet-challenging. Loved the fact that you could "buy" additional parts in the shop to prolong your lifespan.

My load time got pretty slow the third or so time I replayed, but after I refreshed my browser I didn't have that problem again.

Overall, awesome Jam entry! Probably the best I've seen so far.

Gregor the Grogre by Glamdring 2012-08-28T06:43:00

Love the different upgrades and your adorable dev art! My favorite character is the spiky-looking rodent enemy.

Halfway through, I realized you could pick the "You've encountered..." box and place it elsewhere on the screen. I put it in enemies' mouths and atop Gregor's beefy evolved arms, among other places. :P

Also, I'm glad Gregor can't die, or I never would have defeated any of the dragons. D:

Player 2, start! by GSM Productions 2012-08-29T20:06:00

For being incomplete, this is a very nice game!
I like the different worlds, and the pixel art is impressive!

I'm getting an error when I die for the first time that permanently disables the UI. After dying once, the health and star completion graphics no longer display. It persists between worlds, too.
Also ran into one hard crash, which also put me back to the beginning. Not sure what triggered it, though.

I may pick it up again later, since I would love to see the later worlds! I'm just finding it challenging to complete levels without seeing my star count.
Nice work overall though!

GiRL2501 by braingale 2012-08-29T20:47:00

Loved this game!
I'm not sure if there was an end-goal, but slowly tormenting the AI was enough to keep me happy.

As others have said, the graphics and UI are excellent, and the audio work is amazing.
Can I only attack robots/drones if they are active? I'd often fire at one repeatedly and nothing would happen. That's the only thing that stood out as odd.

The pacing of the AI's comments was the best part for me! She has some great lines. :3

Temple of Evolution by Codexus 2012-09-02T00:45:00

The mood and tone is great! Loved the lighting and cloth sim effects in the main room.
I liked the ambient music a lot, too, though the sound effects (for jump, etc.) felt a bit odd when juxtaposed with that.

The Falcon's Nest puzzle was very well tuned and just challenging enough to keep me trying. I got a real sense of satisfaction when I finally beat it!

Overall, amazing work! Good job!

The Legend of Elzad by arkeus 2012-08-28T06:12:00

Amazing game and wonderful work! I've spent a long time playing this already and have explored all the biomes, though maybe not all of the terrain itself.

There were only two things that I disliked about it at all. The music didn't take long to get repetitive, but I'm sure that's why you added a "mute" option. Thank you for that!
Also, I found some problems with collision where I would get stuck trying to fit through a small gap (between trees, or on the ramp areas between terrain levels).

A coupe of things I noticed: I was able to get the diamond shield right after I got the hammer, since pools of lava can be destroyed with the sword.
Also, the blue and yellow slimes were immune to both the diamond and steel swords for me, so I had to switch to wooden again whenever I wanted to kill one. Those last two things didn't detract from my enjoyment of the game at all though.

The pixel art is great, especially the variation on the biomes! I loved the sound effects, too - would have given a higher audio rating if not for the music.
Overall I loved the feel of it and was very impressed with the scope. Awesome job! :D

The Balance by mr_Hk_ 2012-08-28T09:50:00

Definitely the most beautiful entry I've played so far! The art is gorgeous and seamlessly integrated. The gameplay is really smooth and really fun - everything works as expected. Also, that music track is great! Really brings together the whole ambient feel.

Excellent work, everyone! <3

Sprout by cadin 2012-09-02T00:55:00

Really neat idea, and very well executed! I loved the concept, and I loved how smoothly my little sprout-stalk grew.
Great job!

Poggle Island by Rose 2012-08-28T07:59:00

This is an adorable entry and a pretty fun game! Playing at natural selection with the Poggles did not get old for a long time.
I enjoyed the music too, but I played for long enough that I had to turn it off so as not to annoy others. ;)

One Last Chance by recursive frog 2012-08-29T23:47:00

Short but sweet, and a really cool concept! The environment models were also very impressive considering the short time frame.

I would love to see a post-compo version some time, because this is just too interesting not to follow up on! :D

Evoland by ncannasse 2012-08-29T22:22:00

Such a cute and clever game! I loved the way it progressed as I slowly unlocked more types of gameplay. :)

However, I'm having the same problem as Materie and MattRix. I ran around for about 30 minutes pushing every rock from all directions (including the single rock, the group of four, and the group of six where the hidden gold piece and key are). Could not find any more rocks, despite exploring the level several more times.
A shame, because I really want too see where this game goes!

Evoland by ncannasse 2012-08-29T23:09:00

I took a break, tried again with the rocks and got one to move. Yay! :)

Again, really cute and clever game! Well done!
