LD21 — Escape

Flee Buster by ChevyRay 2011-08-24T03:57:00

I love the graphics, and I love the idea, and it's fun for a short while, but the controls ruin it for me. The ship controls feel fight, but the frog and runner feel more frustrating than fun. But overall definitely one of my favorites that I've played. :)

Captain Starfire's Great Escape! by jonnopon3000 2011-08-23T18:56:00

Great first entry! I liked how much thought you put into the story and explaining the controls at the beginning. I definitely had some problems during actual gameplay (would randomly get choppy, bullets would go through enemies, bullets wouldn't go where I aim), but those are all things that could easily be worked out. :) Good job!

LD22 — Alone

Void Defender by rubixcuber 2012-01-05T01:11:00

I get taken to a web host 404 page. :( Looked interesting though!

Arzea by arkeus 2011-12-19T22:28:00

If you get to a pit that you can't escape from, that's actually the final boss's room. Unfortunately due to an annoying bug (which would be more than a minor bug fix so I can't do it for the competition entry) sometimes spawning is wonky and the boss doesn't spawn. You can get around it sometimes by hitting escape, clicking continue, and going back to the room.

Sorry for the major inconvenience of that bug, but I thank you guys for trying it out! :)

I plan for the post-competition version to have much better spawning logic (1, so that it actually works correctly, and 2, so that things don't respawn nearly as quickly), along with many other changes. :D

Arzea by arkeus 2012-01-08T20:50:00

@Tifu: Yep! There's an optional Gust spell that you can get once you have the Chill spell.

And thanks everyone for the great comments! I've worked a bit on a post-compo version and am incorporating as much of your feedback as possible!

Volcanox by leafo 2011-12-26T09:40:00

I really like the graphical style and music. And once I learned that I should jump over most the enemies (that are on a lower plane than I), it became really fun. :D

Dino Pilot and The Lonely Skies by benthepoet 2012-01-05T01:16:00

Looks neat. But just a heads up, I would suggest hosting it on something that uses port 80, because some people can't access http on other ports sometimes (such as me at work). Will try to remember to try this when I get home though. :)

Midas by Wanderlands 2011-12-27T22:53:00

My favorite thus far. :)

LD23 — Tiny World

Atom Planet by NMcCoy 2012-05-04T18:33:00

Really neat game. I loved the graphics. It's not for me though, as there's a lot of trial and error, but I really like the idea.

LD24 — Evolution

The Legend of Elzad by arkeus 2012-08-27T01:51:00

The story was going to tie into it a lot more. As usually there wasn't nearly enough time, so I didn't get a chance to add anything beyond the initial text at the start.

ExoSlime by leafo 2012-08-30T06:37:00

Super fun. Love the bouncy numbers.

LD25 — You are the Villain

ECHO CHAMBER by Loren 2012-12-17T06:41:00

Simple, but very well executed!

Weapons of Mass Construction by dan.jeffrey 2012-12-17T03:59:00

I like the idea a lot. There are quite a few places where it seems like the solution is easier than it should be (given 2 or 3 spikes and it only takes one), but outside of that it's really neat.

Unsave the Princess by karlin 2012-12-17T04:53:00

I loved how even though it was short with limited abilities how you managed to come up with neat little puzzles. I seemed to do things complicated, and afterwards realized what I probably was supposed to do instead. I don't think putting a block on the knight's face was correct though...

Event Horizon by SelectricSimian 2012-12-17T06:36:00

Very cool!

Land of the Weebums by vrav 2012-12-17T04:59:00

There is something so satisfying about flinging these off cliffs. Do they get more flingy the more you fling them? Sometimes I think I might have launched them into space. :)

From The Black by arkeus 2012-12-17T01:49:00

[SPOILERS]

I'd call eradicating the last remaining humans from the planet earth as villainous from the human's point of view.

Most logical villains won't appear to be the bad guy from their point of view. But if you're on a ship carrying the last remaining humans, and are attempting to hail the first signs of life you approach to get resources, and they end up killing you... Wouldn't you think they were the bad guy?

I'll leave it up to you to interpret it as you like. :)

X-Moon by leafo 2012-12-17T03:54:00

I love how smooth it is and the 3d effect. I find using the tractor beam frustrating, but outside of that it's really fun.

Nature's Villain by bach 2012-12-17T04:48:00

Love the graphics.

LD26 — Minimalism

Super MiniMan by Alink 2013-05-08T04:51:00

Lovely graphics and world. So minimal, but it all looks so great.

Coin Collector by anbreizh 2013-04-29T07:48:00

Fun game. It felt like there was a lot of luck involved. I found the fastest way to a high score was upon starting, if a blue powerup didn't spawn, refresh and hit start (also I might have missed a hotkey or something, but I couldn't seem to restart without submitting a score, so refreshing was faster). Felt like high scores are correlated to whether or not you get multiple magnet powers (though of course getting good at getting to power ups and not dying helps!).

That said, I still loved it and it's kept my attention more than the other games I've played so far. :)

Mini Epic Adventure by frogmaster 2013-05-04T21:17:00

Definitely an interesting game. I really liked how different I had to think just to understand what was going on with 4x3 resolution, since a single movement would change the entire screen which my head wasn't used to thinking about.

I did kind of get stuck not really knowing what was going on as I walked around. When I tried to exit I found escape and alt f4 didn't work... Had to control+shift+escape to kill it via process manager.

Essential by Dieresis 2013-04-29T04:37:00

I really liked the level design of some of the puzzles. :D Always good when a game makes you go "that's neat".

Canon by sparkleswirl 2013-04-29T03:59:00

I really like the concept but I think that having to do it 3 times is a bit much. It's a neat idea and I like the difficult of coordinating the four sides, though. :)

Seed by whitetigle 2013-04-29T04:43:00

This is kind of amazing. I love the graphic style and the concept. The only thing I thought could be made more clear is when you grow something too much and it disappears. It's not obvious if it's a good thing or bad thing (I'm assuming that it's a good thing since you can grow something new there), but perhaps some kind of bonus or something when that happens, to make it more obvious.

Awesome job though!

Antichromatic by arkeus 2013-04-29T09:13:00

Thanks for the comments guys! Considering some changes before posting elsewhere, so the feedback definitely helps!

As for the text boxes, I totally agree. I wanted to go writing on the wall, since instructions for this aren't important enough to interrupt gameplay, but didn't for lack of time. Definitely want to for post compo version.

Agreed on the controls taking a bit to get used to. Tried a few other schemes, but didn't like them. Hoping once I get my Ouya it's simple enough to port since it'd probably simpler to play with a gamepad (though shooting will be less enjoyable).

My best time so far is 8:57 with 16 deaths. http://ss.iarke.us/201304/290205591.png Let me know if you do better!

Antichromatic by arkeus 2013-04-30T07:52:00

For those who get stuck at the beginning, you should ignore the room with the two turrets until later (after getting the wall jump ability). I should have added a "Sometimes you need to go back to move forward" message or something to that room.

Antichromatic by arkeus 2013-05-01T20:27:00

Yep, it's using the latest version of Axel (0.9.3 beta branch).

Antichromatic by arkeus 2013-05-13T00:20:00

Thanks for the comments guys.

In the post comp version, I fixed the issue with being able to go towards the teleport first (also, an "issue" where you could get double jump before red shard, which also wasn't intended).

As for why destroying the fracture would reunite the worlds, it was intended that the source of the fracture (the boss) was the one who was holding them separate, and without his interference, they would reunite. Not really explained in game, but the focus wasn't on the story.

I think I'm going to change the turrets to have to kill them only once in each universe.

As for the constantly respawning on that snail, it seems a lot of people enter the room in a way that causes that to happen, which I didn't forsee. Fortunately I was able to fix that kind of issue in the post comp version. I've also added saving and loading (in addition to a harder mode). Hopefully I should be able to finish that soon.

And thanks again for the comments, it's definitely help me to tweak the new version. :)

Moondar by leafo 2013-04-29T06:31:00

Love the graphics! The gameplay felt a bit hectic (it was really hard to dodge the bullets), and I had a really hard time steering the moonwagon. But I love the fast paced action, and everything just looks so smooth. The glow effect makes everything look really nice!

LD28 — You Only Get One

Doubt by rxi 2013-12-16T03:12:00

Beautiful graphics and music.

One Orb by patricklorio 2013-12-16T03:39:00

Neat idea. I found the indicator on the bottom left really confusing since it looks like another enemy. Fun game, though.

You Only Have One Minute by Somfunambulist 2013-12-16T03:43:00

Love the art! Though I didn't read the instructions before playing, and wandered back right next to the furnace when time ran up, and he walked by me and explored the house. Unfortunately he came back down eventually and ate me. :(

Treasurequest by andrewkennedy 2013-12-16T04:05:00

Neat idea and I like the graphics. But I agree that the info boxes coming up every time is annoying.

disINTEGRATE by Bloated Hippo 2013-12-16T08:01:00

Love the music!

0RBITALIS by AlanZucconi 2013-12-16T04:01:00

Very very cool visual style.

One Life by empireindustries 2013-12-16T03:49:00

Found it easier to face same direction and just move around to the other side to beat them. One note: Quick play through game jolt game me a "command line error", but downloading the zip worked fine.

The Lone Tower by Masadow 2013-12-17T07:19:00

Love the idea!

The Trail by Orava 2013-12-16T03:55:00

Footsteps are a neat touch!

The Golden Bomb by cy4n 2013-12-16T03:22:00

Fun! Though, there never seemed to be a reason NOT to hold down all 4 arrow keys (other than now my hand hurts). Seems like limiting you to one or two directions could have helped with that (also I'm sure some peoples' keyboards don't allow all 4 being held so there's some unfairness). But I still enjoyed it. I'm assuming after the X boss with unstoppable angries they just keep coming forever?

Sweat Marathon by oxysoft 2013-12-16T03:56:00

Love the interpretation of the theme.

Color Blind by Mandala 2013-12-16T07:52:00

I seem to have the same issue. I hit jump and this happens:

http://ss.iarke.us/201312/15235152152.png

I move up, and keep moving up, and I just keep moving up into the white unknown.

Agent LD28 by Steve | tacospice 2013-12-16T08:20:00

Quite fun! I had a hard time aiming, my mouse seemed too twitchy even at 2x zoom, but still fun regardless.

Loose Cannon by NickMakesGames 2013-12-16T03:15:00

Neat, though the positioning of the cannons was kind of weird. I was also frustrated by the delay of repositioning the cannon, but I suppose that's all part of the game. :)

Just. One. Second. by kbake 2013-12-16T07:32:00

Worked fine for me on windows 8. Two things that stood out are that the difficulty seemed to ramp up slowly and there was a lot of time spent waiting between rounds. Solid, though.

One Chance at Success by TheLemonKing 2013-12-16T03:58:00

"If by a door or a person press J to trigger that event."

Oh.

I just kept jumping into him until I pushed that poor child off the cliff. YOLO.

BONK by sensenmann666 2013-12-16T03:25:00

Neat, I especially like how the volume of the audio changes as you move away from/towards the door.

Jump Chip by arkeus 2013-12-21T04:43:00

Thanks for all the fantastic comments everyone! For anyone who is interested, I (finally) uploaded the timelapse of last weekend so you can see how it was made:

Thanks again!

You only get 1-1 by headchant 2013-12-16T03:32:00

Interesting. The music was really creepy (not sure if good or bad thing!). I almost stopped at the flag without realizing though...

Open Forest by koller-digital 2013-12-16T07:35:00

Cool concept. I experience a lot of lag when looking around also. Overall a neat game, though.

Press X to Win by Lost King 2013-12-16T07:41:00

I think the game would benefit a lot if you could simplify the control scheme. It takes far too much effort to get a hold of.
