A lot of potential here. Very innovative. I liked the concept, and it was implemented in fun way.

Some "programs" didn't make an awful lot of sense to me, but I somehow struggled thgrough.

Is it the end of the game when the menu jumps out? I changed the code so there was the little checkmark next to "Hackermon" text, but it always reset and jump out again.

le-don 2020-10-05 22:55

@kuro Hey, dude, thank you for playing and for your comment. Well, the end of the game is when the screen says something like "Congratulations, you beat the game, thank you for playing" or something like that. So I guess there might be one last riddle you haven't solved... or more like one last loop.

pepijn 2020-10-08 10:46

Great game! You might want to beef up the 'fun-factor' / 'juice' of your game, as right now it feels a bit lifeless and dull. other than that, the concept is really original, and the way you implemented hacking makes it both easy to use for those unfamiliar with coding, as well as being correct in a way.

Graphics and Audio ain't the best but i don't blame you, not everyone is a good artist.

samdemaine 2020-10-08 11:14

Nice game! The graphics are right up my alley and the controls are a pleasure to use, could you check out my game when you can? :D

harksa 2020-10-08 11:30

It is a cute little game ! I like the idea of going into a code to continue playing the game. Good job !

shugor 2020-10-08 12:04

very on much on theme, the hacking games were nice little puzzles. Good job! One error i got was the game crashed when i grabbed the hacking too from the side, all good other than that.

le-don 2020-10-08 12:08

@shugor huh, strange, it seems this never happened to me. I guess I have to check this out. Did you happen to have the error message? Posting that helps a lot to fix this.

shugor 2020-10-08 12:12

Yeah no prob, here it is.error.PNG

le-don 2020-10-08 12:17

@shugor thank you very much!

bajtix 2020-10-09 18:31

A very interesting idea, requires some thinking! I like it, but I got stuck at the door which required a key. I had the checkmark and was able to pick up the key, but the door wouldn't open. Overall this is a really good game in my opinion, I really love the concept.

le-don 2020-10-09 19:53

@bajtix strange, if you have the key and the room is hacked (see checkmark) the door should open. I will look into it!

leorean 2020-10-10 07:35

Wow, this game was super innovative and nice! The idea has a huge potential!

fun way to show some basic programming, liked the colour theme.

spawncampgames 2020-10-13 16:11

<3 me a good coding game!

asfdfdfd 2020-10-13 20:17

I love how all components of your game works together. Nice entry!

garet 2020-10-13 22:09

Everything is working so well ! The helpful guide for those who don't really code, the "stuck in a loop", the control, a bit tricky to use arrow then WASD, but it makes sense !

Really, something good might work after the jam, it really has potential to become a fully fledged game. Congrats !

sunblast 2020-10-14 14:35

Cool idea of a game, though I feel like something is missing, but not really sure what. The graphics was nice, felt very much inspired by old good gameboy games, Pokemon perhaps? With some work this could be a really nice game!

vphyre 2020-10-14 15:17

Hey your game gives me a lot of nostalgia for just remembering the graphics of pokemon haha. Congratulations on the project, I loved the "hacking the code" feature, really interesting. In general it is a cool and creative experience. Good job.

trexxak 2020-10-14 17:55

Wow, makes me feel very proud of myself that I understood what I had to do in this game (not big on programming)! :D

Cool idea with a lot of potential! Would play the full game!

yoni 2020-10-16 19:48

Great concept :) Not your standard programming game. But I guess you can get away with a programming game that actually shows the player code, if many of your players are programmers themselves :) Note - the first time I played, it crashed (the same screenshot that was posted above in the comments), but I tried again and the 2nd time I was able to play all the way through to the end. Some levels were really nice. It was confusing at times when I should use E, when I should use Space and when I should use Enter.

thevideogamester 2020-10-17 20:56

Cool concept. Easily expanded upon. Puzzles could get pretty interesting. The way you had it set up to select different parts of code was easy to use. I did wish that more parts that were selected could be interacted with. I also think that the controls could be simplified. Make WASD and Arrows work the same, interact and space and Enter the same, etc... just based on the context of what the player is doing as none of them ever had to be used at the same time to make the game play the way it did. The aesthetic was classic, love GB styled games.

archgame 2020-10-18 20:06

I think I ran into a bug at the Game Over/Continue part (The hacker code had the V so I assume I did that right, but I could only navigate the menu not interact/enter.

I like the concept a lot and think this could be built on and continue to evolve, especially as a way to teach people who don't know about coding (although I think sometimes the code was the opposite of what it should be i.e. if 0 >= GetKey(key)?). The input keys were also a bit confusing and I wonder if you limited yourself to six keys instead of 12 if it would make it easier to play. I only offer these criticisms because I did enjoy it and hope to see it built upon, so keep it up <3

zarki 2020-10-20 18:45

While some of the logic was a little messed up, and the graphics weren't super amazing, and there wasn't a catchy tune in the background, I still really enjoyed playing this game. It goes to show it's a lot about the content of the game rather than flashy graphics. I enjoyed the puzzles and the hackermon editor in the gameboy style. Very nicely done!

lilkrit 2020-10-21 23:39

Very cool idea.

kyle-o 2020-10-22 05:43

Ah-mazing concept and execution!

knatt 2020-10-23 21:38

Great take on the theme. I felt like I could easily brute force my way through most of it, the selection that the player can change was always the answer. Still a fun game, good job!

matootsy 2020-10-25 15:32

Yes! I beat that excellent game! :-) One of the best I tried. Good to learn to code! However, I didn't understand *if doorlocked==true doorlocked=true*. It would not rather be False? Anyway, so much good ideas (the trapp hidden... The continue...) so much possibilities. Very funny and addictive. Good that the F12 pause the game. I would really enjoy more levels :-) Very clean and intuitive. Congratulation!

le-don 2020-10-27 18:33

Thank you, everyone for the feedback and the comments. Unfortunatly I hadn't much time to answer some of you.

@knatt Yea, with more time I would have added more options and so on. Ideally, I would let the player just write on their own.

@matootsy Oh yes, door.locked = true is wrong, it was supposed to be door.unlocked = true. A small (but important typo).

@archgame The logic of the key riddle is, the player keeps on picking up the key, if the number of keys in his inventar is >=, == or <= 0. Since you picked up one key, you stop picking up keys when you set it to 0 <= "Number of keys in the inventory." I hope that clears it up.

@TheVideoGamester About using WASD and the arrows keys, I think at some point I had the player to being able to move and hack at the same time. But I would also like to keep it separated, to keep the feeling of "This is the player area/Side, this is the hacking part."
