Wow! This game is fantastic! It is very beautifully made and tells a very nice story.

Wow! This game is fantastic! It is very beautifully made and tells a very nice story.
Looks/Sounds great! The controls can be a bit odd sometimes, but the experience is great!
When trying to start up the game I accidently pressed exit which crashed it in webgl. also the intro songs reminds me alot of clannad. Then i got stuck on the second screen to the right. like the art though had a hard time knowing where to go. like the sound and art good work.
@kingofnova Before you can advance to the right, you must talk to every character/do all the minigames!
Wow this was really creative and I love the art style.
I like the art and music! the essence of the history is very touching. The only thing that confused me until now is the options on the menu screen. It took a while to realize they were there. I don't know if it was intended or not.
The art is so beautiful! You have something truly special here!
Just don't know what to say about the graphics. They are really insane. Colors, line, what a great job! It's very peacefull and it was very relaxing after this 72h Jam. Love the atmosphere. Good job.
Lovely aesthetic! I was immediately drawn in but I got stuck on the second train car with the elderly couple. I tried walking up and down hitting E but couldn't progress. Can anyone help me out?
Art and music were great! One little thing is that i kept walking past the grandma with dialog open and I couldn't advance the dialogue without being right over her. Just a tiny thing i noticed, you did a lot with the time!
This game is absolutely gorgeous. The art is beautiful, the soft color palette is so serene, and the UI is very clean and effective. (I'm OBSESSED with the title screen!). The story was emotional and the puzzles were cute and reminded me a lot of Florence. Side note, I accidentally got the 4D experience because my dad was cooking in the other room while I played this game. Bonus points for dog.
@cambosouph You have to complete all of the minigames before you advance to the next train cart -- you most likely have not washed your hands yet!
I'm absolutely obsessed with this game. Being a cozy games fan I think this has a lot of potential, please keep up posted if you think about expand this game <3.
@gabriel-corbani We're thinking of expanding the game and launching it on Steam -- will let you know if this happens!
@zlc122 Ahh thank you so much -- I'm glad you like it!
@carolyn Thanks for pointing it out to us and for the feedback!
@redsorel Our team appreciates this so much!
@mrchambers Thank you, it means a lot!
@bruno-moraes Thanks for letting us know! We plan on expanding this game and we will take note of this :)
@spluppo Do you mind telling us what in particular was awkward so we can fix this for our next game?
@rawb Thank you so much!
@cambosouph When testing the game I got a similar error where the E buttons wouldn't appear in the 2nd lvl. We're working out the kinks but right now you might have to restart the game.
Very atmospheric and touching. The visuals and audio are exemplary. The minigames were a nice touch to add variety while the story moved along. Great work!
Wow, this is incredible. The only complaint I have is that some of the dialogue got cut off the screen. The art, writing, music, and voice acting all fit together perfectly.
@antaresvaldemar That was the vibe we were going for, so thank you!
@benjamin-l Is the dialogue being cut on the top? Anyway, thank you so much!
so beautiful and touching. ..Wonderful work!
@junamai Thank you so much!
The art and music are beautiful. The theme is great and the game itself is heart-wrenching. I also encountered an error where I couldn't progress past the second car with your grandparents. I restarted and played up to the boiling noodles, but encountered the same error afterward. Still, beautiful work!!
@mab-cat Did you wash your hands? That's a task in the second train that a lot of people have been missing. You have to walk backgrounds (before the great grandma) to find the minigame.
@emily-pitcher no, it was cut off at the side. I have a 4:3 screen, which is probably why. There was only one section with issues, which was when you're talking to the painter relative. I can get a screenshot if you want.
@benjamin-l Ah, that's definitely why. Our game is 16:9!
this was a beautiful experience. to be honest, i started crying in the first scene... it was worth it.
@emily-pitcher Thanks for the heads up! That's my bad, then.
A very heartfelt piece of work, well done.
@anaaraujo Aw, thank you! That means a lot :)
@beats Thank you!
What a heartfelt game - who'd have thought a game jam game would have me crying (in that good cathartic way). I did get a bit stuck in the second car before going back for the handwashing mini game - I don't think it popped up the first time I walked past it, but it's possible I missed it. Overall such a beautiful game. Compelling story, unique mini games, and the music and art style is cohesive and very polished. Amazing job!
@onlyallygrace To clarify about the washing hands minigame, your great grandpa tells you to wash your hands, which is why the minigame does not trigger until after you've spoken to him -- we understand that walking backwards isn't intuitive though, so we're looking into fixing this eventually. I'm super happy you've enjoyed our game and thank you so much!
Suprisingly sweet and heartfelt for a game jam entry! The art is lovely and the voice acting was quite good. I really enjoyed the vegetable chopping minigame, such nice tactile feedback. Overall I'd say this is the most polished entry I've played so far!
@dude-the-hero Thank you so much!
@emily-pitcher oh that makes sense! i just didnt read carefully enough then whoops! y'all should feel super proud of what you finished though it really is a lovely game!
###### Beautiful...... π
I.... honestly don't know what to say after that........
This game made me feel a whole range of different emotions.......
> Our game is Cooking Mama meets side scroller meets a wholesome story about hope.
Oh yeah. The whole time not only was I listening very carefully to every beautiful written and spoken word, this was also full of nostalgia. Reminds me of days long ago when I would play Cooking Mama with my family.
I remember seeing that the old Ludum Dare site had a cool feature where you could give people trophies. I think it needs to be remade for ldjam.com.....
Now I'm hungry.
###### Mei wasn't the only one with tears in her eyes at the end of the game......
First things first here are my general thoughts on this game. I find the art to be lovely but found the Title menu to be a little cluttered for my taste (I had to really stop and look to notice the menu options). I enjoyed the music and voice acting very much. The little mini\side games of washing hands and chopping and such where also very good. Now as you how this game effected me emotionally all I can say is. WTF DUDES. I JUST WENT FROM PLAYING A GAME ABOUT A DOG DIGGING HOLES TO CRYING ABOUT DEAD MOTHERS. I have a standing desk. Do you have any idea how it feels to cry at a standing desk. Its not like I have a chair I can sink back into I just have to stand here and weep like a crazy person. I mean don't get me wrong I loved playing this but I was not ready for the feelings that where gonna come at me. This game was the definition of "Try not to cry... Cry a lot". So 10/10 you made a grown man cry while standing at his desk. TL;DR Very good game. I'm not crying your crying.
@emily-pitcher I felt the controls were all over the place because I was using wasd to move and other keyboard buttons to interact and then also the mouse. If there was a way to be able to use one of those, like cycling through dialogue options with the keyboard or also being able to move to a mouse click would be nice.
When I first saw the game, I was excited to play what I assumed was a cute pasta game with lovely art, but what I was met with was a touching, deep narrative. The game looks and sounds great, and the story is touching (albeit I must say some dialogue in the beginning feels a little disconnected like when grandma is talking about something and Mei follows up with more laments about food).
In spite of all these great things, one of the things I like most about this experience is that it could resonate with someone going through something similar to what Mei is going too.
Great work, guys!
This is a top 10 game in most categories from me. I absolutely freaking love this, and I know you will do very well. Very, very well done. No other words. Only tears.
Beautiful game, beautiful art, beautiful music and such a sad but amazing story. Just wow
Lovely colors and art is awesome. Is pretty pleasant to play. Good job
What a lovely game! I really liked the writing, graphics and the overall atmosphere. Puzzles were simple but neat. I was stunned by the voice over at the end, it was really heartfelt and brought a nice touch to the game. Great job!
Touching story and a very appealing art style - the mini games were a fun addition to the otherwise were narrative focus of your game. I enjoyed the experience and your take on the theme. But I would have loved to talk to the Shiba Inu some more :(( What is his story?? Anmerkung 2021-04-27 165232.png
It's really heartwarming! And the art and music is incredible!
Really fascinating game. The art style is beautiful. It hits pretty close to home being the child of first-generation Chinese parents. It definitely feels like a love letter to Chinese culture and part of the Asian-American experience.
I'd prefer if the speaking parts of the game had subtitles, and if that can be toggled in the moment. I often play games without sound, or in an environment where it's difficult to hear.
Great job! I'm still blown away by the art.
Adorable graphics! And sound! Charming mood Thank you!
Oh man. I'd like to just mention that all the art, music, the cooking minigames and voice acting are all incredible on their own. But I wasn't expecting to find such an emotional and beautiful end result when you put them all together. How the cooking aspect is woven into the story is really masterful.
In any case, at first when I started the game I thought, oh no, this is going to be a sad game isn't - I'm not ready for a sad game. I thought I wasn't going to cry but I did, several times. What a touching experience you have created.
Beautiful game. It's really touched my heart.
@poweranze his unofficial-official name is Bao and he's the artist team's baby <3
Impressive game for a jam! Graphics, music and story are all top notch. Me and my daughter enjoyed ourselves playing through this. Good job.
@peace-of-cake-games Ahh thank you so much! I'm so happy you enjoyed our game -- it was definitely a bigger project than my last LD game.
@theseusinabottle This is just about the funniest and most heart warming comment ever -- I sent this comment to our team and we pinned it in our Discord because it made us laugh that much! Thank you so much for your feedback. I tend to making more emotional/narrative based games, and I'm happy our game touched you. We also plan on releasing a full length version to make some of the animations smoother/bugs and typos fixed, so watch out for that!
@spluppo Thanks for telling us! We plan on making a full length version, so we will keep this in mind.
@anaxie-studio Aw, thank you so much! We plan on making a more polished version of this game to release on Steam, so I appreciate your constructive comment about the dialogue sounding awkward in the beginning.
@baconeta My heart is so happy reading this! Thank you for giving our game a chance :)
@ladycerberus Thank you!
@katriadoodles Thank you so much! I'm honestly stunned with how much we were able to successfully implement in the 3 days, so I appreciate your comment.
@poweranze Haha perhaps we will add more of his story in the full length version (we plan on releasing a more polished Steam version of our game) -- thank you!
@brielley Thank you :)
@lyxil Thank you so much for your comments -- being Chinese American and also first gen is a huge part of my identity as well, as I'm sure you can tell from the game. We plan on making a full length/more polished version of our game to release on Steam and adding subtitles to the end is definitely something we will do. Stay tuned!
@alina-baybulatova Thank you Alina!
@dezom Thank you so much! Having all the elements work together was a huge focus of our team, so I appreciate you noting that.
@mostel Thank you!
@attala Aw, I'm so happy you shared this experience with your daughter. Thank you!
Amazing art style! <3
@asiyeap Thank you!
Wonderful arts and audios <3 The game is really chill although the ending is a bit sad for letting go. Well done!
Really great game, very pleasing presentation and a really good storytelling. I quite liked how the cooking gameplay (also well made by the way) was tied into the main narrative. Congratulations for making such a a great entry, and I can't wait to see what the project will become when the full length version will be out !
This is one of the best entries I have seen so far! Excellent narration, the art style looks stunning, special mention to the color palette and the noodle illustration at the end, absolutely beautiful! Very emotional and engaging story. Bravo!
Great game. The visuals and music is so lovely. Great jam!!
Great experience! Love the music, art, and minigames. I'm especially a fan of the character art, which is in an art style I'm particularly fond of.
If I could offer some critique, the last minigame where you meant to remember something was confusing to me. I'm unsure if I ran into a glitch or not, but all I saw was red liquid in a bowl and then 3 different colored bowls appeared and I had to fill the big one? I ended up just randomly dragging and dropping the bowls until I completed the minigame, but it seemed like maybe I was supposed to see something that didn't show up. Also, while I appreciate the attempt, I can't say I'm a fan of the voice acting. I feel a story like this is much better told through text, especially when you're dealing with a jam, because voice acting of the quality needed for narrative is likely not going to be possible for something like a game jam. Finally, I don't know if the game was meant to end here or not, but I did seem to be softlocked after the voiced dialogue with the mom. It does make sense for the game to have ended here, though.
Overall, I really enjoyed the game and thought the concept was both unique and interesting. The art and sound really elevate the experience, too, and make it especially enjoyable. Great work!
I reallllly love the art, its a really good experience !
Emotional and very beautiful. The art and music are great and the mood was just amazing.
Short and Fast version Music and Art (excluding the walk animation)are easily high ratings. Very nice! The gameplay was not. I didn't get past the second train car before getting bored.
Maybe I'm just too impatient but I wasn't a fan of the gameplay. Music and Visuals are strengths!
You all should be very proud of this. I think there are some minor criticisms that I could have of it, but I think all in all, you've made a beautiful piece of art. I played this on stream with one of the creators in chat and I really liked it. I will finish the story on my own. It is a very, very compelling game. The writing in particular is *chef's kiss* and really makes this... haunting?
I'll see myself out.
@pichuscute0 Thanks for your in-depth comment! We're currently investigating the soft-lock with the voice dialogue - it seems to happen most often when someone switches tabs while its playing, but we're not quite sure exactly what's causing it yet. We're also plan on improving the puzzles for the post-jam version!
This is more deep than the Mariana trench
Very enjoyable experience! I love the art. The mood of the game is very good.
Such a nice game, i love the graphics you made there, nice work!
Such a beautiful game - it's incredible how touching and real a narrative you've brought to life within such a short time frame and such a short game. The story felt sincere and personal in a way that was both very intense and very nice to interact with. The art was beautiful and soft, and the colour palette you used really did help to emphasize the gentle dreaminess of the entire thing. The music also fit well into place!
The mini games were very easy, but that wasn't at all a downside - in such a narrative heavy game, I was happy to see that the short mini games within were only soft breaks - almost like breaths in between each section to give you a bit more time to think on the train car you were in and the people you had interacted with before moving onto the next area - difficult mini games would have changed the vibe a lot. The pacing really worked for the narrative!
It would have been really excellent to see the final voice-acted section with subtitles, as I'm extremely bad at following dialogue without, but I'm glad to see you posted the transcript so I could catch up on the sections I wasn't able to follow after - it was a much appreciated consideration to accessibility.
Thank you for developing this game and building this experience!! βββββ
Really nice game. It is impressively complete, like a small version of a released game. It is a kind of game that I've never felt capable of making-- one that has a real emotional connection. It was very sweet, and handled well. The simple gameplay pairs well with the story, doesn't need to be more complex than that. Very nice art, both characters and environment. The only critique I have is that I wish that the main character had more animation frames in her walk, as it is, it is a little stilted. Very nice game!
**+** lovely art and music
**+** lots to think about
**+** thematically consistent
**-** The menu buttons were hard to make out from the background
**-** sometimes it was tough to find the next thing to interact with
**-** animations (e.g. walking) would be much nicer with only a couple extra frames
Very well done!
It's a really lovely game. A great choice for the them i never thought about the art and music really fits the story you're telling.
Wow, what a delightful, bittersweet game. The way you approach loss in the story - especially through assembling a dish throughout the game - is really, really touching. I appreciate the level of polish too - the art and music is beautiful, and the writing struck a chord with me. Really, really wonderful job.
Can't describe how beautiful the game felt and was The game literally gave me goosebumps truly a piece of art <3 Great work guys I would rate the game 11/10 <3 Greatt work you guys made my day
Very cute game but I still stucked on the 2nd wagon even with the "important" notice :/ Yet, the the graphics are very nice.
Great game! I didn't notice how time flew by while playing this game. Thank you for interesting experience!
Serene - that is the word that came to me when I first started this game and I think that it's the word that describes it perfectly. The art is so soft and serene (very well done), the music is serene (also great and so fitting) and the whole experience is just so calm and, yes, serene :smiley: It feels deeply personal and that definitely enhances the experience itself.
I'll say: well done!
The only thing I didn't like was the walking animation. It was kinda awkward and jerky. Did not fit the otherwise smooth and flowing art.
I loved this so much. It really is refreshing to play a slower paced game with more depth. It was also raining with thunder outside while I was playing, really was just a vibe. Very touching story, made me a little emotional thinking about a similar personal experience. Loved the aesthetic, such a wholesome game :)
Amazing story and mood, very touching! Really beautiful art, music and great voice acting. It's so much more than just a jam game. It can actually help people to go through a loss of a loved one. Hope you will take it further. Really great job!
Cool work ! I love graphics !
really beautiful game! Amazing art, touching story, nice music, ...
If I had to nitpick, I would say the walking was a bit clunky and a bit slow. Maybe a few more frames to the animation and an little up to the speed would do the trick.
Congrats on this game, it's really touching and so relatable in how to cope with mourning. A wonderful entry
@thain Thank you so much Thain!
@vaanrile Thank you! You can follow our Twitter sonderingstudio for more updates :)
@dodidouda I appreciate your comments. The artists did a great job!
@doctortm Thank you :)
@pichuscute0 Before you do the bowl puzzle, you see the order of the colors you have to remember. We definitely note though that it can be confusing, so thanks for letting us know!
@nyanpierre @nathalia-hohl @bubbadubc Thanks for the comments guys!
@ezgoodnight What is your twitch channel? I'd love to check you out!
@turtle-games @suika343 @mayzhy Thanks you guys!

@matheus-madtrilhas He's amazing at music, thank you for your comment!
Art is so pretty and music so calm... Best game for the evening after hard work)
@zeilanda Glad you enjoyed our game!
@emily-pitcher one of your creators was on it last night, I'm ezgoodnight on twitch as well as everything else.
The VOD of me playing this and many other LD games is up now. I'll be doing another stream Thursday, god willing and the creek don't rise!
Wooow this is such an impressive game!!! The fact that you guys managed to do this in under 72 hours is a feat! It's incredibly polished in every aspect: art, story, gameplay, audio... Can hardly find any faults. One of the my favourite entries so far and I absolutely adore the 2D art with the orange/teal palette, helps with the feeling of nostalgia. Very wholesome. 5/5
@matheus-madtrilhas oh my, thank you so much for that comment! I absolutely love Uematsu's work so that means a lot, thank you!
I loved the storytelling on this game. Cooking foods that my late father used to makes me remember him too. Thank you for this!
This was fantastic. The visuals are absolutely gorgeous, and the story is very well written. Thank you for this π
Wow what a gorgeous game - the art is beautiful as well as the soundtrack. Such a calming and cosy game - I really enjoyed playing the minigames and following the story; so full of emotion!
@emily-pitcher Just to follow up, I think I may have encountered a visual glitch then. I only was briefly shown the red color, but didn't ever see anything else. Not a big deal or anything on my end, but might be something worth noting for you guys. ^^
i feel like a jerk for not liking this because you put a lot of passion into it but if you are willing to have some critique: i think all problem come from how fast this game had to be made. a lot of the issues are related to show don't tell but you had no time to show. i think if you did this game or another game with alot more time you could have the recourses the flesh out the characters and story and show me her grief not tell me it. also all of the mini games where pointless and hurt the pacing. if it was just a walking sim the game would have been a lot better.
The graphics are so beautifully done, I'm deeply impressed by it. The sounds of the game are also top notch. All this together with the great storytelling made my heart feel warm. I connected with Mei's story very much (lost my mother in adolescence as well), so this was very special to me. Thanks for this beautiful game and for the caring details throughout the gameplay (noticed you guys cared about accessibility and this is awesome). HUGE congrats for everyone who worked on this!
Gorgeous game! Really impressed with the hand-drawn art style, really nice music, and great overall style. The walking animation is a little off (it really needs a specific drawing for the right-step, it doesn't cycle ok coming back to the start right now), and perhaps a little more detail on the background. Astounding work anyway!
I'm impressed by the sounds. Excellent job! The graphic is also very cute. The steering was a little bit weird.
nice concept, like the graphs, gj!
A wonderful and touching game, I loved everything! Awesome work!
I like graphic and music in this game.
Nice take on the theme! Wish there were one or two more puzzles, the food art was great :smile: The walking animation was a bit janky, and imo there were 1 or 2 characters too many (a lot of similar conversations in a short time so they kind of blended together). Great entry though! :)
Short but gives a strong experience. I like how this games shines in every aspect. Great work guys. And now I'm hungry..
Nice game! Also comes with some very deep topics and expressions, and is more resonant.
This is beautiful in so many levels :two_hearts:
Art and music are lovely, the colour palette in particular adds a lot to the warm, melancholic vibes. It all did wonders to take us through the train as we learn about the main character's efforts to deal with grief. And I loved the choice of food as a humble, close way to draw an emotional connection to a loved one.
Amazing entry. Congrats to everyone!
I saw that game in my feed and had to play it after it was done. And what can I say? I almost cried (uuh, so easy to cry those days, hear me) due to the emotional value of the game and, to move to easier topic, I wanted to metaphorically cry over the beutiful graphic! Amazing entry, one of the best best best this jam, 6/5 would play more of this kind of games.
Presentation is incredible I freaked when I realized the buttons of the main menu adjusted when I resized the window very very beautiful and charming very well-executed
now I'm not so fond of graphic novels so I can't really judge but at the very end i poured the sand-coloured sand in first then nothing would happen
and that made me confused and sad
but it's a charming game anyway thanks for sharing, peace out <3 :-)
Congratulations on the game, I play with a very high sensitivity, the music is beautiful, and the story too, I would humbly suggest adding intermediate frames in the animations so that it becomes softer with a greater feeling of greater delicacy, I appreciate the opportunity to play your game, a big hug to everyone, and I await your evaluations regarding my game.
@sarafilipa Thank you so much Sara. I appreciate the feedback!
@pestodesign The cooking was inspired by my Chinese grandmother, glad you share the same connection!
@doot Thank you :)
@mitsouko Cozy games are my favorite to make and play, so thank you!
@pichuscute0 Thanks for letting us know. We plan on making a full version of our game, so we will look into it!
@villanelle I'm sorry to hear about your mother, but thank you for your kind comments. I'm glad you found comfort in our game!
@waltsontanaka We plan on fixing the walking animation in our full version (we're planning on releasing a more polished version on Steam). Thank you for letting us know!
@szymon-ogd @vsi @darqweful @azakharov Thank you guys!
@sodaro We plan on making a full version of the game, so we may add more puzzles. We're definitely going to fix to walking animation too. I appreciate you letting us know about the similar conversations -- that was actually my biggest writing concern after finishing the script (that the characters blended together too much). Thanks for the in depth feedback!
@zhi @ar-borno Thank you guys (and sorry for making you hungry!) :)
@ithildin Aw, thank you so much! As a Chinese American, food was how I connected with my grandma, and I wanted to capture that for this game.
@dane-tesla I'm so touched that our game gave you an emotional reaction. We plan on releasing a more polished version on Steam, so look out for that!
@strangeryann You can thank our wonderful UI artist for that! Our last puzzle's hit box isn't perfect, and we plan on fixing that in our full version.
@etrealjunior Fixing the animation is something we plan on doing in our full version (We want to submit our game to Steam once we've added more polish). Thank you for your comments!
Wow.. what an incredible game!! I absolutely loved it. The art is so gorgeous, the music is great, and the story made me ugly cry quite a lot, lol. I really connected with the game, you guys did an amazing job, good luck with the Steam release!! :)
WOW! This game realy has a feeling. All the music and dialoges made me look at my inner part. All of us carry our parents heritage. Their habbits, their homour.. It was a good example of they live inside of us. And they are hidden in the deep. The game was like living in an Hayao Miyazaki movie. Story drived me deeper cars of train.
My only critic is main menu was a bit confusing. Maybe you can make it more basic and buttons can be easy to see. GOOD JOB I REALY LOVED IT !!!
My throat hurts and I'm about to have a meeting for work, lol. This really gave me strong ghibli vibes, and now I just want to cook a family recipe, *all it took was a taste from the past*.
*brb crying*
Ok I'm back. The colors and the music were so cozy, playing this in the morning with my coffee and orange juice was definitely the perfect move.
I'm sure you already know this but the last puzzle with the bowl has a very little hitbox and it can easily block someone. Not me cause I clicked everywhere, I wanted to see mom.
Thanks for sharing this :)
Your game is a real time capsule. It can be difficult to tell what our ancestors would have been living. Sometimes I wish I could have more footage of them.
Very beautiful game, full of emotion! Would make for a lovely full game. I really like the concept of the mix between the visual novel style sidescroller gameplay and the cooking.
Great work!
Nice novell
Incredibly Beautiful and Deep Game!!
The story is really engaging and the dialog and choices are well written, and the graphics are beautiful!!
Great Entry!!
I did come across a few issues:
* My first time playing I think I did not finish the interaction with the seat, and went to the next car and then I could not interact with anything in the 2nd car, nor go back to the first car, I had to restart the game and start over.
* The last mini-game with the 3 bowls had small unclear hitboxes to I must have dragged the bowls over 20 times to finally "solve" the puzzle
This is an absolutely gem of a game. One of my favorite entries. The artstyle is top-notch, very touching music and the story is amazing as well. Really great usage of the theme! Although the whole game was incredibly polished for such a small amount of time, I found few issues or things I think could be improved:
1. Walking animation and walking speed of Mei seem slightly off, she should walk slightly faster for it to feel in sync. 2. When you walk to the end of stage and keep walking, you can see Mei standing in one place, but still playing a walking animation. She should go off the screen completely. 3. The last minigame with the big bowl has very small hitboxes; it takes several tries to get the position right. 4. One of Meiβs legs is glitched out in the scene where she's out of the train.
All in all, this is an absolutely phenomenal entry and I wish you good luck on Steam!
A contemplative and profund story about loss, grief and a perspective on the different generations that shape the person you are now and will become in the future, told through the convincing metaphors of a train ride and food. Everything feels very polished and the different elements of graphics, music and writing combined create a compelling and meditative atmosphere. Well done! The only part I struggled with was the last mini game with the three bowls, whatever I tried, nothing seemed to work, but after more random clicking the big bowl finally started filling up.
This was an amazing game. I'm notorious for skipping through dialogue to get to the next point/choice but i found myself slowing down and actually reading this time. I loved the art style, If you all made a VN about cooking with this same art style I would definitely buy it. Again, absolutely amazing job, i look forward to playing your games in future jams.
@feralpoodles Thank you so much, we anticipate the Steam release being out sometime over the summer hopefully!
@daegonz Yep, we're already aware of the hitboxes. Thank you so much for your comments, I'm glad you thought our game is cozy!
@crazyrems @robotex @okamit Thank you so much guys, means a lot!
@cary-stanley We're already aware of these issues and plan on fixing them for our full release (we plan on releasing a more polished version of our game to Steam), but thanks for pointing them out! I also appreciate your kind comments :)
@dzejpi Weβre already aware of these issues and plan on fixing them for our full release (we plan on releasing a more polished version of our game to Steam), but thanks for pointing them out! I'm glad you enjoyed our game too :)
@flogames The hitboxes of our last puzzle are imperfect, and we plan on fixing that for our full release (we plan on releasing a more polished version of our game to Steam). A cohesive mood was our biggest goal for this game, so thank you for noticing!
@666savior We plan on making a more polished version of our game to release on Steam (@sonderingstudio on Twitter for updates)! Thank you so much for your nice compliments :)
Wow, you've got quite the ensemble working together on this thing! (maybe the most names I've ever seen on a jam entry) Always nice seeing people attempt more of this stuff (I enjoyed "What Comes After" earlier this year).
Some of the little details here are nice, especially the little particle effects and small animations help to bring an otherwise-static scene to life. The "minigames" are a bit silly at times (funny how you can wash your hands "too much"), but I kinda get what you were going for.
The music really fits the mood. I'm always impressed by this style of more contemplative and meditative music. I'm no good at it myself, probably because most of my music tends to be more assertive and present. It's something I'll have to experiment more with.
The title/main menu screen, as mentioned, is really pretty but doesn't read well as a UI. I think it's because the entire screen is saturated and vivid, so the viewer's focus isn't drawn anywhere. Maybe try toning down the saturation and/or value on the non-interactable elements a bit, or a drop shadow on the buttons.
Family and moving on from the past are both.......complicated. As such I know everyone brings a different perspective to the table. I think the story you're telling seems to resonate with others, which I think is great. But I can't really comment on it the same way because I think I come from a different point of view. Edit: WAIT y'all are the team who made "Anything For You" omg that makes complete sense why did I not think of that, hahahaha xD
Good work!
"If you want to take one thing from her, it's to love even when no one's watching."
This was such a beautiful, touching story.
The artist style, music and settings were really well done. I think my favorite minigames were the vegetable chopping and the puzzle, it was satisfying to watch the bowl and the pan filling up! The little sparkles showing a finished task were really cute, too.
It was a really nice way to wrap it up with the cleaned up recipe page and the cooked meal.
This story was so well written. Everything about it was top notch. Its so amazing that it was created in a weekend.
I have so much empathy for Mei, trying to process the recent death of her mother. Each of the relatives had a distinctive personality that was conveyed with posture and dialogue. Everyone felt like a full person who was easily believable that they cared about Mei. I liked the interactions that were offered. You were given permission to remain in denial and anger about the mother's death, or to slowly move towards acceptance. Even if you selected options that seemed less about the mother, they still have a gentle way of relating.
Most of the interactions were done with the keyboard, so requiring the use of the mouse in some minigames confused me. I would get stuck and not know what to do or what key to press. It didn't block me too much but in a future polished version, it might be useful to have more clear guidance on the first few minigames.
Thank you for creating and sharing this experience.
@ddrkirbyisq Thank you for your comments! We definitely plan on fixing the title screen UI for our full version. Totally understand you coming from a different POV about loss-- we all grieve differently! And yes, I made Anything For You last LD jam, but only 2 of us from that game made A Taste of the Past. This is mostly a whole new team!
@ynneblack Thank you for noticing that line! There are certain lines that stand out to me while writing, so I'm happy you picked that up. I appreciate your kind comments :)
@saoi-games Aw, thank you so much. Honestly, one of my main concerns was that that the relatives blended too much, so I appreciate you dispeling that insecurity. We plan on looking into the mouse/keyboard combination for our full version (We plan on making a more polished version for Steam).
Again, thank you!
What a gorgeous and meaningful story. Thank you for creating this. What a lovely mood
beautiful game! sadly i had problems with the bowl mini game too (screenshot attached). it occured after changing tabs so i guess it has something to do with that maybe.Screenshot 2021-05-04 23.52.45_1.png
Wow, that got me in the feels. Nice work.
Beautiful! This art moved me. The subtlety and the beautiful color palette convey a feeling of very nostalgia. The soundtrack is beautiful and deep. It is beautiful how few instruments and loose notes are not a sense of freedom. Your story touched me a lot. I remembered my grandmothers and the delicious things they cooked. Even though my mother and aunts know how to make my grandmothers' delicacies, I will never taste the special of their food again.
Congratulations and thank you very much.
Very beautifully done. Not as much game as it is story but deep and emotional nonetheless. Animation and music was also beauituful
@dagostino-audio @wilsk Thank you so much!
@bonsai For some reason, changing tabs has been causing errors in our game. Thanks for letting us know!
@euler-moises Even though this story is about a mom, I based my writing off my grandma -- I'm happy the recipes have been passed down to your aunt and mother! Thanks for your nice comments :)
@lazyalarm Aw, thank you!
Really great graphics, especially the characters, and great bittersweet music as well that really help making it enjoyable to play through the game. Good writing and story as well, it felt very personal and intimate and it was cool to meet all the relatives.
Some unobtrusive sound playing along with the dialogue would be nice, e.g. Animal Crossing style (but maybe a bit more somber and faded to fit the mood).
It's perhaps a bit slow but I think I might just not be used to this type of game, and overall this was a really great entry!
Enchanting. The best story I've ever seen of any jam game.
@neontropics We can definitely consider the sound with the dialogue for our full version, as we plan to release a more polished version on Steam. Thank you for the suggestion!
@ivan-nosov Thank you so much <3
I loved art, music and history. The mini-games were simple, but they fitted with the theme. The story is quite deep combining with the theme of this Game Jam. Congratulations to the developers.
@yurikun Thank you!
Beautiful game :heart: Now I want noodles! :smiley:
