LD46 — Keep it alive

a new life by Angela He 2020-11-10T08:33:51Z

4.875 in Graphics and no placement? Oh no!

LD47 — Stuck in a loop

Heaven Slash by FireSlash 2020-11-03T04:53:58Z

Fantastic! I really felt like I was playing a game from an old PC or perhaps something similar to a Famicom or Super Famicom! Too bad I never got to play this during the jam, I'll just say that it was 5/5 for everything. Please make sure to post a post about this if you make something like this next jam! I love these sort of retro games.

Also, two questions. What's up with the missing .gif? And why can I start the game and advance through dialogue with a controller's A button, but I cannot use a controller for gameplay?

Woofice Chair! by JorgeGameDev 2020-10-09T02:20:25Z

Fantastic! Who knew beating up bodybuilding cats, birds, and squirrels was so fun!

The Pongs by schizoid2k 2020-10-22T03:19:26Z

This game is great! I love the "annoying" chiptune music, it really set the mood. I also like 10 Pongs/Normal Speed/Double Rings. Took me 154 nudges to get two out!

The Basement by Geckoo1337 2020-10-09T03:31:59Z

Very disorienting (but immensely fun)!

Stuck In Paris by CocaPasteque 2020-10-06T03:08:30Z

HAHAHA, explosions everywhere!

Stuck In Paris by CocaPasteque 2020-10-08T16:46:51Z

Could you try and fix the problem where almost every time I honk my horn near a bus the bus drives straight for me? I've lost count of how many times I've been on a roll towards Level 20 and then a bus driver decides to kill himself to take me out.

Cyber Blob by gogo199432 2020-10-20T03:32:09Z

Wow, the graphics are incredible! The monster almost never left the area around its initial spot though, I had to go right up to it and then run away at the same speed as it to make it go anywhere.

a nice place by netmute 2020-10-06T05:07:31Z

I'd love to play a full, even longer version! This game is heartwarming!

Fish Balls by Gao Ming 2020-10-06T04:40:23Z

Very calming!

Progress. by AidanMarkham 2020-10-27T03:06:47Z

Fantastic job! The graphics were very lifelike, the ending message was inspirational, and I've never seen a game where you have to strategically buy movement!

Congratulations on winning the Mood category! Here's a little celebratory sketch I whipped up. It's not perfect, but at least I managed to actually draw something with a touchpad!

Janky Marble by infinitycore 2020-10-26T23:17:00Z

Great job! I've seen a lot of games built like this (this is the 100th game I've played this jam), but nobody has done anything quite like this! Even though there was no scoring or anything, I'm still addicted to the gameplay! Relaxing, simple, and creative. 👍

Roll your Dough by ancient-pixel 2020-10-15T20:30:34Z

Hmm, how do you get past the alarm clock? I just snooze it and when it should be 6:00 it jumps to past 9 and I'm fired.

Roll your Dough by ancient-pixel 2020-10-16T12:55:07Z

Thanks @ancient-pixel ! The first time I played I managed to grab the clock, now I know I'm supposed to do that.

Roll your Dough by ancient-pixel 2020-10-16T21:46:37Z

Once I managed to figure out you have to turn off the alarm and *then* grab and drop the clock, I had fun making bagels and getting fired!

Troubled Mind: A Life of Torture by Flying Cat of the Pepes 2020-10-20T03:07:14Z

Wow, that was... an intense end.

Ha ha, I'm glad I read the comments first, with my volume at 2% and my headset master volume at 30% or so, all of the sounds were still so loud!

The Good, The Bad and The Fluffy by shide 2020-10-24T03:38:43Z

Wow, this is very professional! Port this to a console and I bet it'll be a hit!

Radical Rails by neontropics 2020-10-25T15:43:35Z

Nice job! Those yellow cars really got me! The AI coding was perfect. I hope you get to 20 ratings, you're almost there!

Hyperbolic Space Fighters Extreme! by gingerBill 2020-10-04T20:09:41Z

Fantastic! The gameplay is simple enough to learn it quick, but the art is mind-boggling. Great job!

Minotaur's Labyrinth by JOrbits 2020-10-12T23:03:12Z

Nicely done! I like the contrast between the simplicity of the graphics and the difficulty of the game. Unless you know the trick to the game (which I won't reveal), it's a very challenging game! It's still mind-bending and fun anyway. If you make a full version of this, I say that everything is already great and nothing needs to be changed!

Solivagant by RafaelGiordanno 2020-10-18T20:45:14Z

Very fun! Personally, I think the graphics are well done and don't need changing. (Then again, a couple other developers have noted how they hate how I respect simplicity in graphics.) I haven't gotten to the real ending yet because a gate snapped shut on top of me and I became permanently stuck, but this is definitely one of the games that needs to get more ratings!

Dreamin' Cat by Fockx 2020-10-30T04:08:23Z

Fantastic! I love the cat and the fish, makes me think of Happy the Cat. Aye! The wall jumping in the very last room was almost impossible because of the cat's rectangular collision, but I managed to clear it eventually. I love how getting hurt has almost no penalty! And I need to know what's up with the jumpscare monster in the pitch-black hallway!!! That really got me, I didn't expect a sudden jumpscare! I need to know more of the story.........

Too bad I'd never heard of your game until after the ratings period! I'll just rate now, 5/5 for everything.

@oaksguard that is so true! This game was basically made for that emoji.

Hyperloop by R3L0ad1 2020-10-09T21:36:24Z

Wow! The graphics and soundtrack are really captivating! After two games that ended in quick failures, I managed to get 292.88 seconds. Well done, @r3l0ad1 !

Blip by KekkoDude 2020-10-22T03:12:05Z

Nice relaxing game! The music definitely fits in well.

Ribbon by 100th_Coin 2020-10-16T13:38:33Z

Really good game! I hope there's a post-Ludum Dare version, because I wish this was longer!

Purgatory is a Music Store by MattWoelk 2020-10-06T05:00:16Z

Fantastic!

Around by Stadoblech 2020-10-26T14:47:24Z

Fascinating! The gameplay never fails to bore me, but the red cubes definitely need a warning, because every time I died it was because a red cube appeared at my current coordinates.

System Reboot by Toulou 2020-10-09T18:45:20Z

Nice game, but I do agree with a lot of other players that the wrench swinging could be better.

Blank Tape by Greet 2020-10-24T15:59:13Z

Nice work!

Gravitron - 2047 by RAC-Games 2020-11-04T00:07:21Z

Fantastic! Too bad I didn't find this until after the jam. Very creative! The controller controls are perfect! The right stick camera adjustment felt like it could be slower at lower tilt angles though. Mt. Olympus was a bit too hard, you really challenged my FPS skills!

STUCK? by Constantin 2020-10-04T20:56:04Z

Do not play. The only way to close it is Windows Task Manager. (thanks, @king-cacti !!)

STUCK? by Constantin 2020-10-05T14:00:29Z

@constantin , technically it isn't an issue for people who know the Windows administrative apps, but not everyone knows to force quit apps using Task Manager. Maybe you should put a hint to use Task Manager (or Alt-Command-Escape on Mac) to close the app. I'm sure lots of people will end out getting stuck and having to reboot their computers.

Great job! I'd love to see the drifting experiment added to this!

Save The Prince by AVAVT 2020-10-09T04:32:37Z

Nice game! I like the added touch of making different boards.

Dude Ranch by ColeSlaughter 2020-10-11T02:35:38Z

Ha ha! This is probably the craziest game I have ever played! Good job!

Loop Lock Malfunction by GuitarBro 2020-10-17T01:48:17Z

Wow, this is fantastic! It took me a while to figure out how to not stink at combat, but the multiple games were worth it!

Loop Lock Malfunction by GuitarBro 2020-10-17T14:36:29Z

@guitarbro Not just a couple rounds yesterday, I'll be playing more today! This is one of my favorite games this jam! (And admittedly, I have so many favorites, my favorites list is at like 20 games out of 35-ish played)

Loop Lock Malfunction by GuitarBro 2020-10-28T04:55:35Z

Ha ha, I was just playing a game and after a fight two power-ups were created! "The Healing Slide" power-up now exists.

Loop Frogs by GaryS 2020-10-16T21:34:11Z

Nice work! There have been multiple platformers with the same basic design as this, but nothing has had these challenges and obstacles! Plus no one ever thought to use frogs.

Roller Riches by dxk2294 2020-10-16T23:59:33Z

Well, at the time I'm typing this, I just hit 1.380E + 8. I've got the peanut butter, loops and banks everywhere, and just one ride gets me millions of dollars. And there are countless cars at the same time.

Well done! I've been going for 45+ minutes now, and I haven't stopped. That's saying something!

This is definitely worthy of a computer or mobile game! You'll need to add savegame support though.

Roller Riches by dxk2294 2020-10-17T01:38:12Z

I beat it! (A while ago) Great job making this! I just couldn't abandon my rollercoaster scam, and I ended up stealing money and customizing my coaster for over an hour!

WHAT I SAW by Angela He 2020-11-03T06:18:47Z

Wow, this is unbelievable! The story is fantastic, the characters seem real, and you got some real good jumps out of me with the mirror jumpscares! At first I thought this would be yet another platformer. (Seriously, they're so easy to make. I made one, I played several dozen others...) And then, I got the horror vibes with those little floating guys. (AARRGGHH!! GO AWAY!!) And then you scared the life out of me when I learned that the slightly relaxed horror platformer ***happened TO HAVE A BOSS FIGHT!!*** 😱 Seriously, one of the best games I've ever played. You need to make a way longer version and get rich off of it.

Too bad I didn't know this existed until after the jam! I noticed you have four gold trophies already, just go ahead and get another for creating this. 5/5! Expect to find a "you were mentioned..." notification in a day or so.

(Still shaken from the boss fight. This is probably the second-scariest thing I've ever played/watched. I spent 10-20 minutes on the boss fight, and that much time later I'm still on edge.)

WHAT I SAW by Angela He 2020-11-12T00:33:11Z

Here's a present as a congrats for making such a good game!

WHAT I SAW - Sketch.png

QLOOP by PapyKent 2020-10-22T03:23:26Z

Well done! I wish it were turn-based with choosing the action's orders each round though, the game went a bit too fast for me to even hit 1000.

App-ocalypse by ReDDarKwh 2020-10-19T22:52:38Z

Hey @reddarkwh , can you fix the screen issues? For those with 1366 x 768 screens, like me and @eduardo-yukio , we can't see the score, motivation bar, combo count, and all of the other edges of the screen. It's kind of hard to play when you can see almost nothing.

The Looping Legend by PronomicalArtist 2020-10-15T11:18:51Z

Nice work! I wish the player's shooting ability was better, the shooting worked about 5% of the time.

Action Loop by iszlonn 2020-11-17T05:41:41Z

I wish this was longer... 😢 everything was perfect, it makes me sad I can complete it in a mere 2 to 3 minutes. PLEASE make a longer version!!

A big thanks to @trexxak for recommending this!

Escape From The Loop! by TheGerry 2020-10-09T02:23:22Z

Nicely done! I wish there were more levels!

The Curse of Cattenburg by Honest Dan 2020-10-09T04:21:54Z

Wow! This is great! It does run a bit slow on my PC, but that's my CPU's fault. Maybe if it was on something with high-power CPU and GPU, say, an Xbox One, it would run faster. (hint hint)(I'd love to have an extended version of this on my Xbox One!)

The Curse of Cattenburg by Honest Dan 2020-10-28T02:52:18Z

3rd in Graphics! Congrats!

Defuse in under 5 by Darylsteak 2020-10-09T05:10:50Z

This is great! And to think you did it with C2 amazes me. How did you make the ghosts of yourself work? (As a fellow Construct developer, I'm curious!)

I agree with @grizzliusmaximus , we could have a winner right here! Way to represent Construct!

Phil Alone by Gabriel Dias Oliveira de Almeida 2020-10-09T23:30:17Z

Ha ha ha! I love how cheerful and innocent the music is when you die in your sleep! It never fails to amuse me!

Phil Alone by Gabriel Dias Oliveira de Almeida 2020-11-17T04:38:13Z

A little note I'd like to make...

I really don't think Phil Alone needs to be marked as 18+, according to companies such as the ESRB this could settle with a Teen rating. It's just a little suicide, it's not 18+ level.

Phil Alone by Gabriel Dias Oliveira de Almeida 2020-11-19T08:00:24Z

Oh boy. Still stumped after trying just about everything.

@gabriel-dias-oliveira-de-almeida , you have been given the "Trickiest Game" award for making a game that so seriously stumped me! Normally I can crack any puzzle/puzzle game, but Phil Alone brings a puzzle master like me to his knees. Well done, I'm going insane now.

Phil Alone by Gabriel Dias Oliveira de Almeida 2020-11-20T15:43:35Z

I'm playing the HTML5 version. I assume that one is always up to date?

Phil Alone by Gabriel Dias Oliveira de Almeida 2020-11-20T16:59:14Z

Heh heh, well, I'm certainly stumped... do you have any (minor) hints? I've explored every bookshelf, tried all sorts of do it/don't do it combinations, I've burned the closet, I've had naps and dreams, I've explored the windows...

Hardest puzzle game I've played... well done, you're fantastic at puzzle-narratives!

Phil Alone by Gabriel Dias Oliveira de Almeida 2020-11-21T16:06:55Z

Hmm, thanks, I'll have to take a look at the nap again!

Phil Alone by Gabriel Dias Oliveira de Almeida 2020-11-21T22:38:38Z

"You completed the game in...1 days..."

Ah ha ha! Finally got it. I get the feeling there could easily be a bestselling Steam game of this if you add more mysteries and scenarios! (It stumped me for so long, that's a good sign! It's a nice brain exercise too, that really got me thinking and now I feel like an expert when it comes to getting stuck in your house with a murderer who trapped you in a time loop.)

Phil Alone by Gabriel Dias Oliveira de Almeida 2020-11-22T08:31:16Z

Yes, $100 is a steep hosting fee! Indie sites have free hosting typically... and Microsoft Store might be free if you sign up right...

(Sadly I don't have an account for Steam or anything. I wish you the best of luck!!)

(Another added parentheses note: interested in spreading the word about your Steam kickstarter? I've got just the thing.)

(Yet another. Here's a strategic marketing strategy: you can try to publish a full paid version on Itch.io or something and use this version like a demo, and with how good this is people will surely pay for the full version! The Itch.io funds can help support expansion to Steam, and places like Itch.io are still "big stores" like Steam and Microsoft Store.)

Led Astray by Lyrcaxis 2020-10-16T13:16:44Z

Wow, this is really good! Now my "Favorite 11 Games Of LD47" list gets to be changed to "Favorite Dozen Games Of LD47". I love the adventurous/tragic music, I love the sad story, and I love the graphics! (I have made it well-known on several posts and my own game that I have a soft spot for hand-drawn style graphics.)

Led Astray by Lyrcaxis 2020-10-16T15:34:55Z

Ha ha, I'll admit, I haven't posted my list yet! I posted a list of eight great games a while ago, but I've added more games to the list and I need to repost. (Also, very few people saw my list because it was instantly swallowed up in the blog's "PLAY MY GAME" spam comments)

Fancy Trash by sebastianscaini 2020-10-09T05:03:23Z

Ha ha ha! The graphics, the story, the itch.io mouse cursor, everything is great and hilarious!

Astroboi by Tomáš Selmeci 2020-10-04T19:45:31Z

Astroboi is great! A little difficult until you get the hang of the controls, but I couldn't stop playing!

Loophole Kingdom by MateusBoga 2020-10-23T05:41:56Z

@mateusboga , I think this'll be ranked #1 in Humor when the results are in! I kept laughing out loud a lot! I love how when you kick the bucket, you really "kick the bucket" and you get to argue against the results. And I don't think I've ever seen a game where you get to die at the menu!

Fantastic job! It was really a fun challenge getting every ending, and I love how every object has a purpose! (I managed to figure out all of the items, and almost every possible dialogue combination. I got all six endings!)

Super Jump Guy by F1Krazy 2020-10-21T21:52:00Z

Nicely done! The dialogue could be a bit more out of the way though, and the dialogue popped up at weird points. (Like, I was right at the end and the player was like "poor zombie..." even though there were exactly 0.)

Beyond Death by Trypants 2020-10-11T14:23:52Z

Extremely well-done! The world is very nice-looking, the animations are smooth and flawless, and not many 3D games can boast that the infamous "wall bug" doesn't exist! ("Wall bug" example: like in the game NHL 20, the hockey player's sticks often go through the walls or other players) I'd love to see a much longer version of this!

My only complaint is the lack of using Right Stick (or some keyboard keys) to rotate the camera. You got the camera at the perfect angle so this wasn't much of an issue though.

Stuck in the Clock by Aaronacus 2020-10-15T22:47:54Z

Nice! There are problems with jumping though:

a. The jumping is incredibly unreliable

b. I can move the player with a controller's left stick, but there's no way to jump!

Chicxulub by Literal Games 2020-10-22T04:18:24Z

Wow, who knew dinosaurs flew spaceships to protect the Earth from asteroids?!? This game is incredibly educational!

Chicxulub by Literal Games 2020-10-22T04:20:13Z

Regarding the above comment: I'm just joking! The game is just so funny! I love how the wacky music goes hand-in-hand with the concept of dinos in space shooting fireballs at rocks.

Routine by Jammin 2020-10-15T23:43:56Z

Good job! After calling trying to call Mary like ten times it still wouldn't work though. The music is great, but gave out after a few days. I guess the music isn't looping?

Hold "A" To Win! by 420blazeit 2020-10-12T02:59:36Z

Ha ha! Nice job! (Also, go Construct 3!)

@trexxak Ha ha! Yeah, more or less!

A Game of Chance by Axefall 2020-10-06T04:45:43Z

Ha ha, I love the narration! This is a great game, using the same doors over and over again really stumped me!

Suicidal Boyfriend by Federico Giorgi 2020-10-06T05:34:07Z

Considering making a friendly version for more age-diverse audiences? That would be a great way to get additional popularity and votes.

Edge of Ludum Dare by danielblanco3d 2020-10-26T23:25:14Z

Ha ha, I tried every possible combo! This is almost an exact recreation of how my scheduling was this jam! I managed to not have time for art or dialogue too. Exceptions: I didn't try a team and I didn't have a hangover.

Ringchaser by jordantanner 2020-10-09T04:38:50Z

Nice and fun! I got 8th place before Chrome rejected the game. (I'm Kirito2031) Great game!

Hyperloop by very dark lord 2020-10-23T03:32:25Z

Great job! It's so polished it seems like a full game that got worked on for months, not something a group put together in a few days!

Creed by dimlight 2020-10-09T05:57:47Z

Nice job! The AI was fun to listen to, the gameplay was flawless, and the graphics are great!

Time Loop by _Kassjak_ 2020-10-10T02:35:52Z

Fun game! The use of the theme is great, because time is a never-ending loop. Great job!

LaserLoop by Neon Glass 2020-10-20T01:23:01Z

Very good job! After spending quite a while analyzing laser angles I'm now smarter when it comes to Laserangleology.

Virtual Chicken Staring Contest by TheLonewolf 2020-11-01T02:40:15Z

Take that, chicken! Effortless Easy win, eventually on Hard it got dark and didn't become bright again, five-ish minutes later still nothing has happened. I did like three minutes (total) on Hard without blinking before I realized it broke.

(Well done! I don't know why the heck you only got 2.75 in Innovation.)

Terror of the Lazy River by Birdwards 2020-10-23T05:53:54Z

What with the simple controls, the graphics, and the music, if you had made this a few dozen years ago this would have been a hit on the Super Nintendo!

TimeBot by Mightymaster99 2020-10-19T23:29:36Z

Nicely done! The text was a little blurry, and the collision of the player was extremely unreliable, but I really enjoyed it! The first eight levels were easy for me, but the last level... good puzzle. That really got me until I figured out the perfect sequencing and the clue in the name.

Spaghetti Quest by peterfonts 2020-10-20T03:19:44Z

This was fun! Good job!

Lives you can save by Pawciu 2020-10-27T03:54:14Z

Spectacularly made! I managed to kill off two people in the first two turns, oops! After 9 turns I had to stop to give my PC a charging break. This is really well-made, and I love the hand-drawn looking graphics! (I've made it known that I have a soft spot for games with a hand-drawn look)

"Lives You Can Save" - how about "this game, we can save!" You just need one more rating! (Whenever mine go through...)

A Loop to Save The World by Crazybot 2020-10-06T05:23:37Z

Really good for only three days of development!

Hell Glider by TheAxe316 2020-11-05T02:57:29Z

Great job in the rankings! The gameplay, concept, etc, was fantastic! However, I feel that the controls are horrid: WASD does nothing for the rope when you can use the mouse, wall jump was useless, and spreading your hand across the keyboard for Space jump was just awful compared to the possibility of W jump. Otherwise, great job

minotorus by AceArcher 2020-10-09T05:26:27Z

Well-made! It is really jumpy, but don't worry, it's just my PC. Nicely done!

WhileLoops by Ausstein 2020-10-04T20:03:38Z

Genius!

Witch Loop by Erukolindo 2020-10-15T11:54:10Z

Nicely done! However, it's frustrating how there are no instructions, no HP UI, the different potions are not explained, you can fly offscreen, and the enemies can shoot at you from offscreen. The game needs a little work, but I'll go ahead and blame Unity since the export didn't work right. It sure seems to have happened to a lot of people, Unity not exporting right!

Get in the Loop! by toasteater 2020-11-03T04:28:29Z

Holy cow. The happy and encouraging music, the rainbows and fish, the fantastic art, and yet... the objective is to kill yourself. Oh, the irony! That's some dark ironic humor. (Well done!)

If you think about it, ain't a sling a murder loop? by matthewrobo 2020-11-03T05:13:05Z

Spectacular! Could use a leaderboard, I got 162.

HONK II by Tricky_Fat_Cat 2020-10-12T23:30:25Z

Nicely made! There is a problem though: after I hit the "send to message center" button on my low battery alert (poor computer), all of the game UI went away! Unsurprisingly I died quickly since I couldn't see my HP or ammo.

Amusement Shark by No Grapes Games 2020-10-23T03:58:42Z

The gameplay: nailed! The story: nailed! The graphics: nailed! The audio: nailed! You nailed it, No Grapes Games! This game is very professional-level!

Wow, this is a fantastic take on incremental games! The Right Arrow and leveling up encourages the player to stay and play, and the music really makes you feel the intensity of the running. I love how the "play" and "support" itch.io buttons refer to the game as "The Awesomeness"! Thanks for recommending this game to me!

Pillars of Anguish by Outfrost 2020-11-11T20:25:44Z

Hey everyone! I had a great time playing this game and ignoring the narrator's "press esc" trick. Here's an abstract-ish artwork I whipped up to celebrate 46th in Humor!

(I have now learned I can draw with a controller in Paint 3D. I can actually draw a straight line! 😅😆)

Ha ha, this game is so fun! I love how when you kill an enemy they just topple over. I managed to get 31000 the first time I ever played, and I'm wondering: do the collectible objects do anything?

The Nightmare by SaltFactory Studio 2020-10-19T23:06:21Z

I downloaded this game like "Oh, another horror game. Whoopee. Time for some slightly edgy music and a weird-looking monster or whatever."

My mistake.

I think I had a heart attack.

I'm still on edge.

After my first monster attack I was like "I want to climb the walls! I don't want to die!" Darn, that was the scariest thing I have ever played. It would be nice to be able to save the clues you've already found, because I DON'T WANT TO GO BACK IN!! and yet I want to beat the game!

The Nightmare by SaltFactory Studio 2020-10-30T12:39:47Z

Today I was going through my large and crowded folder of LD47 games I downloaded, and I saw The Nightmare. 10 days after playing it for the first time I'm still too scared to go back in.

That's how you know you nailed the scariness!

Very well done! Reminds me of "There Is No Game" on the Scirra Arcade (it won a game jam a while back). However, the circle minigame is WAY too fast for someone who uses a touchpad and not a mouse. (Because I don't own a mouse)

Divine Drifter by Enzar17 2020-10-23T04:32:31Z

OH YEAH, RECKLESS DRIVING!! This is the perfect game for anyone who has ever wanted to go way above the speed limit! Just add a few more features to this game and port it to Xbox One, and this'll be an instant hit!

(Yes! I made it on four or so of the leaderboards! Kirito2031 does not give up!)

Wow, well done! The first time I played Day 4 glitched and I got to do unlimited days, once I hit Day 10 I figured out what should have happened and replayed. The message at the end is very nice, and I like the nice simple graphics. You really need to add a warning about the extreme language on Day 4 though, people of all ages play and develop on ldjam.com.

Congratulations! Your game is by far the most unique among the "loop clone platformers"! The strategy of mining ores, the need to harvest power, this game is amazingly creative and original! I love the voice acting for the robots!

Office Dating Simulator 2020 by Brainloaf Studio 2020-10-10T03:54:04Z

Well, that was crazily fun! I like the option of six endings, everything from blowing the office up, to living in an anime afterlife, to getting food poisoning. Well done! This is one of my favorite games this jam!

I'm also going to note, you should put a note on the Ludum Dare or itch.io page warning younger players about the language.

Ace of Rope by cagibi 2020-12-05T16:17:37Z

Okay, I saw your post and now I've played through the whole post-jam version, and here are my thoughts.

Wow. This is incredible. Unique mechanics, hilarious Super Paper Mario-style jokes and running gags, fantastic graphics, well-thought-out story, and a nice combination of bullet hells, RPGs, and shooting games. The bosses were very fun to fight, and you can tell the bosses are perfect when I ragequit but come back to Ace Of Rope just a few minutes later. (Honestly, I think Death was the hardest. That was the first point where I turned off self-damage.) The caribou were both flawlessly frustrating and very original, they made all sorts of fun puzzles. Also, I don't know if hiding off to the side in the Time Mansion fight to avoid every single vertical projectile was intentionally added as a cheat or not.

I love all of the little details in the world, from seemingly useless jokes that turn up later, to the fact that the base of the save points actually turns into a software save button when you save. (And I didn't know that in her spare time Death plays Mario Kart and does DJ-ing. This game is educational.)

My only complaint: I need a longer version! This is too good for me to stop playing! (So I'll probably go through the whole game again.) I beat this in probably no more than two and a half hours, and getting a cutscene of what happens after the game would be nice. I also suggest a Super Paper Mario-style approach, when you beat the game there are optional places you can go to for fighting and exploring, and some side quests just to help people out. (Because, honestly, I liked having to run around and fetch stuff. Strategic fighting is fun, too, too bad I can't do any more of it after clearing the game.)

If I had found this game during the rating period, you would have scored some easy fives!

Ace of Rope by cagibi 2020-12-06T14:31:42Z

@cagibi ha ha, same with me, Super Paper Mario being one of my favorite games ever! Between the three profiles I've started over the years I probably have 200 or so hours clocked in. Naturally it was kind of heartwarming and nostalgic playing Ace Of Rope, because all of the side characters such as the cacti and sandcastles really sound like civilians from Super Paper Mario. (After looking at the sky for all these years, I can tell you one thing: it's blue)

Wow, yesterday my friend went through the whole game (with me doing all of the boss fights), and Death took me forever and the final boss was defeated on the first try. Last time I had this much fun against a video game boss was Shadoo (hey look, Super Paper Mario). And I guess all of those "lives" lost are okay since Death actually apologizes and gives me pizza.

I'll definitely have to check out the jam version! I'm interested to see just how much got changed in the post-jam version.

Ace of Rope by cagibi 2020-12-06T14:38:30Z

And some reaction feedback I got from my friend during playing most everything:

- Reaction to Judge U R Dead: this isn't so bad. (gets to spinning around haywire part) AAAHHHH!!! - Reaction to Death: THIS IS IMPOSSIBLE! (I beat Death so he can continue) wait, Death is a girl and has a Switch? - Reaction to the caribou: WHAT. (dies several times because he didn't understand blinking) - Reaction to the Mansion boss: Awwwwww! (spawns legs) what the-- (final stage) 😥 nooo, cute bunny....

It was... interesting, watching my friend play, because he never really understood the recoil and I had to turn off self-damage as soon as possible.

Nice game! Every time I find the bear the camera zooms in and then no scrolling, cutscenes, unzooming, or anything happens. Then I immediately get killed when I can't even see myself. Is this a bug, or just something I'm supposed to avoid?

Boris the Bear Hunter by ForgeronStudio 2020-10-15T22:37:42Z

I'm using fullscreen in Google Chrome. The operating system is just Windows 10, maybe it's because I'm approaching the bear from the left, and a little bit up?

What are the menu controls? Using the newest version I can't get past the menu.

Dr. Needles and the Nightclub by funemaker 2020-10-09T14:03:18Z

Sure, I'll try it out!

Dr. Needles and the Nightclub by funemaker 2020-10-09T15:30:43Z

I understand! I'll have to see if I can get my hands on a large-screen monitor, because your game looks fantastic!

Dr. Needles and the Nightclub by funemaker 2020-10-09T16:00:09Z

Seems like any standard laptop should have a good screen size for testing smaller screens. Good luck!

Dr. Needles and the Nightclub by funemaker 2020-10-15T21:30:43Z

I'm working on my to-play list today, and hey, your updated version works! Thanks for getting a version that works on smaller screens out! The game was great! I managed to find the cousin right before I died, turns out going into completely random rooms works good. The collisions were weird as lots of other people observed, but this is a homemade engine, so no ratings subtractions for a few weird collisions in a game that you made the engine for! Great job, for both the game and the engine!

Dr. Needles and the Nightclub by funemaker 2020-10-16T21:04:24Z

It's okay that you didn't let me know! I never kicked this off of my to-play list because I wanted to play this so much. I don't regret waiting! (And I guess it's a good thing that a: I check my notifications often and b: I posted my gamedev email in my profile. Makes it easy for people to get in touch.)

Back And Forth by Kisk 2020-12-07T05:21:41Z

Goin' through some games to try to make the wait until April more bearable...

> ...and please for everyone whos going to comment here don't tell me about copying vimlark idea thank you.

You made a game inspired by Make The Way with some levels paying tribute to it. Yes, it does mean that Innovation took a hard hit, and people said you should have left Graphics since the graphics are from a free asset pack. You did leave credit, though.

But this does not justify people posting anonymously just so they can make fun of you without being discovered.

> ...This is a scam you made. - Anonymous

> ...you knew this... - Anonymous

> ...ripped off... - Anonymous

The above quotes: that's just overly harsh hypocrisy. I mean, most game developers started out making some sort of remix of an existing game to learn how games work, and then they mock those who do/did the same. You're new to this, I get that! I mean, my first decent games were remixes of things such as Pong, Donkey Kong, Super Mario Bros, etc. Saying that this is a guiltless ripoff of Make The Way is inaccurate, that's like saying that every platformer ever is a ripoff of Super Mario Bros if it has a world, enemies, and a goal. And I like how you paid tribute to Make The Way by recreating some levels.

My advice: ignore that garbage from people who are trying to mock you and make you unhappy. **You made a game all by yourself.** I sincerely hope you continue to do game development! (Just maybe try changing things up a little if you pay tribute to a game. It's not like it's a crime to do it though.)

Back And Forth by Kisk 2020-12-07T05:25:17Z

Sorry if it seems like I'm rambling. 😅 I'm just angry about how hypocritical this is, people mocking your game. I'm sure they've all done the same thing at some point.

Backpack Hero by AR Borno 2020-10-16T22:04:33Z

Fun game! I beat every level monster and probably set a speed record. The trick: stand under an eye, hold Up Arrow, and GO CRAZY WITH THE X BUTTON!!!!!! You'll kill the boss before it kills you.

Anything For You by Emily Pitcher 2020-10-09T06:29:22Z

Wow. Just, wow. The music. The story. The art. The voice acting. The code. Forget being my new predicted winner of LD47, this is one of the greatest games I have ever played. I don't think there is a way I can express how proud I am of everyone who made this game. I'd love to see more games tying into Anything For You, or an extended version. I have never been this moved by a game before. Too bad there's no feature to ultra-boost your ratings for one specific game!

Anything For You by Emily Pitcher 2020-10-09T14:24:49Z

Great job! It is a bit of a pain how the shooting enemies will be tens of thousands of pixels above the player and will still shoot and go towards you, so once you find the third jetpack fuel it's impossible to advance because of all of the projectiles. Maybe change it so offscreen enemies can't do anything?

CONTRAST by Benedek Labancz 2020-10-17T00:55:28Z

Fantastic! This is the power of Construct 3! Fighting game, puzzle game, both! As a long-time Construct 2/3 user, I'm happy to see something so good made with the world's best engine! (I seriously typed a whole ton of C3's advantages over other engines earlier. https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/47/evo-loop-tion-ludum-dare-47/what-should-i-choose-unity-godot-corona-cocos it's somewhere in there. Just look for the biggest comment ever.)

Two things: It would be nice to have HP bars, and you should probably change the link to HTML5 and not Windows. I expected yet another itch.io download link but was instead surprised to see the same arcade where I uploaded my game.

Outside The Loop by Peace Of Cake Games 2020-10-05T23:36:57Z

@macmist @darthdeus @instanttrain @yellow-basti @purpledartfrog Thanks, everyone! I'm glad everyone likes it, I didn't have much time to work on it!

@yellow-basti Thanks! Yup, every time you reach the edge of the layout you loop to the other side. It's important to be able to do it to get past walls!

@instanttrain Thank you! The green loop idea was originally going to be a portal you could use to travel to the nearest matching portal, but I decided the platform idea would be more entertaining. Originally I was going to have a tutorial and dialogue system, but I didn't have much time to work on this game. The red loops actually restart the level, but I didn't have the time to do a visual effect to represent that.

@macmist Well, since everyone likes this, I guess I'll have to start working on a full version! I had originally planned on making small enemies and a boss you have to loop attacks at, but I ran out of time.

Since I only had less than 72 hours to develop a game, I tried to go with some basic, hand-drawn graphics. I believe the definition of good graphics is not professional smooth graphics at the level of Nintendo, but rather something that the developer clearly did themselves. Hand-drawn graphics have always appealed to me, but I do draw pixel art and professional-level graphics too. This was only one game I have made, my masterpiece is still under development.

In the upcoming full version, I will be presenting some challenges like what you said can be used with the green loops. Of course, easier to make it playable for all players.

My main focus this Ludum Dare was gameplay, not audio. It's my first attempt at creating a game in just a few days and I didn't want to lose time composing a whole OST. Also, that was not a recording of actual grass, but a highly distorted synth made to sound like alternate-dimension dead grass.

Outside The Loop by Peace Of Cake Games 2020-10-07T23:25:12Z

@wolfier

I just roll with my style of hand-drawn. As for music, I was not lucky enough to have the time to spend hours making music, since I don't settle with half-developed music. I'd appreciate it if we could just end this conversation with my motto, "to each his or her own".

Outside The Loop by Peace Of Cake Games 2020-10-08T00:26:47Z

@stormcat , @fractal-flower-girl , thanks for playing! Once I get to work on a full version of Outside The Loop I'll be sure to implement a tutorial that explains red loops.

Outside The Loop by Peace Of Cake Games 2020-10-08T03:01:37Z

@webox Thank you so much! I was happy to see that Stuck In A Loop won the theme vote, and I decided to fully embrace the theme!

Hm, I'll try troubleshooting that audio issue.

Outside The Loop by Peace Of Cake Games 2020-10-08T05:45:20Z

Thanks for playing @jcourt ! I didn't have time to add music since often I'll spend 20 minutes on one instrument for background music. I'll be sure to add music in the upcoming full version.

I'll update the game description!

Outside The Loop by Peace Of Cake Games 2020-10-08T14:07:24Z

Yes, I agree, @arttu-halonen ! I ran out of time to do a tutorial, but there'll definitely be one in the upcoming full version of Outside The Loop.

Thanks @james-clark ! Your game was really fun too!

Thanks for playing, @roboshamit !

Thanks @garywiss ! Once I publish a full version a clear tutorial is definitely something I'll add.

Outside The Loop by Peace Of Cake Games 2020-10-09T15:28:57Z

@kassjak @witekwitek , thanks for your comments! As both of you mentioned, I wish I had more time to work on art. I was hoping to go for professional-level graphics, but I ran out of time quickly and went with some basic hand-drawn graphics. I'm hoping in LD48 I'll be able to show everyone my real art skills. And yes, Outside The Loop needs a tutorial! It'll be the first thing I work on for the full version. I also agree that my sounds need work, I didn't have the time to spend 20-ish minutes composing background music, and I had to make the walking sound in just a few minutes by distorting a synth. Not having music is one of my biggest regrets about this project, because I was hoping to show off my skills as a music developer.

Outside The Loop by Peace Of Cake Games 2020-10-09T15:45:15Z

@witekwitek No offense, but I prefer to just wing it for jams in my own style. Also, do you have a LD47 game? I would like to fill my to-play list back up, and I'll be making a list of all of my favorite games this jam. Let's see who can make it on to my list of honor!

Outside The Loop by Peace Of Cake Games 2020-10-10T00:06:33Z

Thanks, @gabriel-dias-oliveira-de-almeida ! Your game is great too!

Thanks @funemaker !

Outside The Loop by Peace Of Cake Games 2020-10-10T06:06:56Z

Thanks so much @finn-tr ! I'm glad you liked the hand-drawn graphics, not everyone liked the casual art style I used!

Outside The Loop by Peace Of Cake Games 2020-10-10T06:17:51Z

Thanks @lychee ! One of the things I wish I could have done is make a good tutorial, but as I said in my post I ran out of time. I'll definitely look at your suggestions once I start on a full version!

Heh heh, the goal boxes are actually literally the same as the other ones! (I'm lazy) Using Y-coordinate math and "overlapping object" comparisons, I made it so hitting one mathematically placed box activates the loop's visibility and transitioning.

Outside The Loop by Peace Of Cake Games 2020-10-10T06:18:55Z

Thanks for playing Outside The Loop, @ellladee !

Outside The Loop by Peace Of Cake Games 2020-10-10T13:56:55Z

Thanks for playing, both of you!

@benslaney I'll have to look in to that bug, I've never encountered that before.

@toulou Yeah, I wish I could have done a longer world with more use of the loop ability. Oh well, that's what a post-jam full version is for!

Outside The Loop by Peace Of Cake Games 2020-10-10T14:41:02Z

Thanks so much @unimaginable-code-studios ! I never had issues with the jumping, it probably got screwed up during export. I'll investigate the issue!

Outside The Loop by Peace Of Cake Games 2020-10-10T22:07:14Z

Thanks so much, @geckoo1337 !

Outside The Loop by Peace Of Cake Games 2020-10-11T04:42:54Z

@cliffracerx , thank you so much! This is definitely something I'll be working on more post-jam.

Outside The Loop by Peace Of Cake Games 2020-10-11T05:54:41Z

Thanks for playing @arad-hamidsamiee ! I agree that professional-looking art would probably be preferable to the hand-drawn art I did. And the completely random blocks, I just stuck those there for the player to play around with while getting used to the controls! And there's no background music or anything, just a sound I whipped up for when you walk in the grass. After LD47 I'll be working on a full version of Outside The Loop!

Outside The Loop by Peace Of Cake Games 2020-10-12T02:22:13Z

@ygrichman @moski @dxk2294 Thanks for playing, everyone!

@moski Really? You broke the loop? I bet I was careless and left a bug crawling around somewhere. It was probably a glitch with the endless level wrapping and you managed to slip into the area that's just for effect and not gameplay! Each side of the layout has a spot that doesn't work for gameplay, only visuals, and I bet the game glitched and overrode the layout wrapping! Ha ha, I'll look into that!

Outside The Loop by Peace Of Cake Games 2020-10-12T13:56:08Z

Thank you, @trexxak !

Outside The Loop by Peace Of Cake Games 2020-10-12T15:48:40Z

Thanks @ar-borno ! I can't wait to try your game!

Outside The Loop by Peace Of Cake Games 2020-10-15T11:38:58Z

Thanks for playing, @pronomicalartist ! I do wish I had the time to implement some of the things you suggested, like explanatory dialogue and background music. I spent a lot of my time sleeping and coming up with ideas and only getting to make half of them. Once I get around to making the full version of Outside The Loop, don't worry, there'll be music and dialogue and probably some some small world details, since I love animated dancing mushrooms. I'm not someone who believes in lots of visual effects though, I rarely use large overwhelming effects and particles.

Outside The Loop by Peace Of Cake Games 2020-10-15T11:44:05Z

@moski , I tested for the bug you found, and wow! It really does break! The problem is the scrolling is homemade using global variables and X/Y coordinates, and I told the game to reset variables when you beat the game. I forgot the scrolling would break, so playing Outside The Loop twice is impossible! I'll fix once I work on a better game version.

Outside The Loop by Peace Of Cake Games 2020-10-15T13:08:27Z

Thanks for playing, @thesnide ! The "loop jump" (thanks to you it's official now) is definitely fun! Too bad I made ceilings everywhere.

Outside The Loop by Peace Of Cake Games 2020-10-15T19:44:08Z

Thanks @omar-14 ! One thing I wish I could have added was some dialogue that both made a storyline and gave hints.

Outside The Loop by Peace Of Cake Games 2020-10-15T23:11:44Z

Thank you so much @virimine ! Ha ha, how funny you said that, originally the green and red loops actually would be linked for teleportation! I wanted to make the player throw a loop that connected with the nearest portal, making it so you can do cool stuff like warping a boss's attack back at them, but I decided a throwable platform was easier to use and code.

Outside The Loop by Peace Of Cake Games 2020-10-17T00:01:50Z

Thanks @ruddiculous ! I agree, the game is a bit short and most people don't think my hand-drawn style artwork is good enough. Both things I'll be improving in the Outside The Loop full version! I've mentioned a couple times now, not getting to make a cool and mysterious music is one of my biggest regrets.

Fun fact: originally the loops you throw would actually teleport you to the nearest onscreen end-loop like a portal. I figured that a platform would allow more creativity, and of course save time. So, bye-bye original idea!

Outside The Loop by Peace Of Cake Games 2020-10-17T14:23:47Z

Thanks for playing @fadrikalexander @flying-dog-fish ! Making the goal clearer is definitely on my to-do list for the full version, for the jam version the goal block is exactly the same as the other ones. I just used a simple mathematical comparison to get "is overlapping" and "less Y" factors, then make one specific block trigger the loop's visibility and movement.

Outside The Loop by Peace Of Cake Games 2020-10-18T13:26:59Z

Thanks for playing @peterfonts ! There actually is a goal, to get to the green portal loop so you can exit the loop, but as you noted in 2) I need to make it clearer. I was going to implement some dialogue that would both help add a storyline and explain things clearer, but I ran super low on time. I also wanted to make more sounds and some music, but making music takes a while and I barely had the time to spend a few minutes tweaking a synth to do the one sound effect I got in the game. I don't believe in ever using assets, only things I've made myself through hard work. And yes, I need to change the graphics. I thought everyone would enjoy my hand-drawn style graphics but apparently some people like them, some people think they should be better, and some people hate my art. As for those techniques in the link you put there, I believe the key to making a good game is not heavy visual effects, but rather the key elements of a game: gameplay and story, if it's a game revolving around a story.

Outside The Loop by Peace Of Cake Games 2020-10-19T01:01:54Z

@coleslaughter Hey, thanks for playing! I 100% agree the objective needs to be explained better, I had all sorts of ideas, like explanatory dialogue and a simple tutorial, but I did a spectacular job of implementing zero of my ideas. I'm glad you like the idea of a full version, because for me, it's all about the players. After my current project, codenamed "My Xbox Masterpiece", Outside The Loop: Full Version will definitely be the next thing I work on!

Outside The Loop by Peace Of Cake Games 2020-10-19T18:31:41Z

Thanks for playing, @maskinmask ! The activation block definitely needs to be different, it's literally the same as the others, with some math to calculate the collisions so the other blocks don't activate the loop.

Outside The Loop by Peace Of Cake Games 2020-10-19T21:47:35Z

Thank you for playing @mightymaster99 . I have definitely received mixed feedback on the graphics since I had little time and had to do some hand-drawn ones, the player definitely is odd-looking for the walking since I encountered mid-development bugs that took priority over fixing graphics. I also was unable to compose some music since the code had bugs that urgently needed fixing, and my device used for music is rather slow. After the low amount of time I had to work on this, I now understand why so many developers like doing all-nighters!

Outside The Loop by Peace Of Cake Games 2020-10-20T20:33:53Z

Thanks @somn ! I'm glad someone liked my handwritten font, I spent a bit of time trying to make a cool font. Once I work on expanding Outside The Loop, I'll definitely make sure the goal block is clearer! And I had originally planned on using savegame features to make checkpoints, but that would have taken time and I did a terrible job of having enough time this jam!

Outside The Loop by Peace Of Cake Games 2020-10-21T04:02:54Z

Wow, I'm so happy you liked Outside The Loop so much @snowinn !

Outside The Loop by Peace Of Cake Games 2020-10-21T21:58:53Z

Thanks for your feedback, @f1krazy ! I definitely wish I could have done the graphics better, I actually am an artist, I just have the little issue of having to spend more hours than I had in order to make good art. The same case happened with making music and sound effects, I tend to develop them rather slowly. The loop progression was supposed to be like a puzzle, but I didn't have time to add a tutorial or dialogue explaining the puzzle. I'll definitely be expanding Outside The Loop, because I agree the game is way too short.

...And yes, this is my first game jam! I'll definitely be entering in more Ludum Dares, after this one I now realize that I need to really clear my schedule in April for LD48! I've got many years of game development experience and I've even taught programming for a little bit, but I've never tried being stuck with a deadline before LD47. This has definitely been a good experience for learning how I do when dealing with a deadline, and polite criticism like yours will certainly help me with future timed development.

I'm glad you liked the title screen! Title screens always have so much potential, I like to take advantage of it.

Outside The Loop by Peace Of Cake Games 2020-10-22T00:05:16Z

@kekkodude Thanks for playing! The loop you throw out is simply just a platform used to get over long stretches of red loops that loop you to the beginning of the level. A lot of players discovered by timing it just right, you can have unlimited jump with the throwable loop too.

Yeah, I've heard about that bug. I realized what the problem is a few days ago: the scrolling is controlled by a global variable made to choose the scrolling method: player without vertical scroll, player with vertical scroll, or no scroll. Turns out I forgot to change the variable back to the default from "no scroll" when you start a second time! 😅

That part where you get stuck in a loop is the progression from one part of the world to the next. (Stuck in a loop - just like the theme. I *totally* didn't plan that! (Sarcasm)) I didn't get to implement dialogue explaining the loop progression like I wanted to, what happens is when you hit a block that meets the mathematical criteria I specified the loop activates.

Outside The Loop by Peace Of Cake Games 2020-10-22T02:54:05Z

Thanks @rafaelgiordanno ! My three biggest regrets about the game are the parts almost everyone agrees need work: art, audio, and explanation. I have learned that next Ludum Dare I'll definitely have to set aside time for more work on those, each of the three weaknesses got put off because of bad time management and a whole ton of bugs. I can't wait for LD48, I hope the theme is something where I don't instantly think "PLATFORMER"!

Outside The Loop by Peace Of Cake Games 2020-10-22T15:02:48Z

Thanks @schizoid2k ! I definitely regret not getting to put in some explanatory dialogue or a tutorial. A full version is high on my to-do list!

Outside The Loop by Peace Of Cake Games 2020-10-25T14:13:03Z

Thanks @esphoros ! Better game explanation, longer levels, and more audio are all things that I wish I could have done. Definitely all things I'll be improving in the full version!

Outside The Loop by Peace Of Cake Games 2020-10-25T21:20:46Z

Thanks for playing, @duke ! And the art and lack of most audio wasn't a choice, but it wasn't a lack of skill either, because with enough available time I can make professional art and audio. I just simply ran out of time, so the game ended out being short too. As for not using the vertical climbing, it is way too tricky for players who aren't skilled at platformers, so I decided to make gameplay simple for the sake of all players.

Outside The Loop by Peace Of Cake Games 2020-10-26T21:24:57Z

@ausstein trolls perhaps? There's no way I would have gotten less than 3.5 without people trolling my game. I don't think anyone went as crazy on the theme as I did. Well anyway, thanks for the positive Theme rating! I really went mostly for Theme.

Outside The Loop by Peace Of Cake Games 2020-10-28T00:39:30Z

Thanks @ausstein , but that would mean that people don't realize that Theme is separate from Overall. Theme really applies to theme in the game, so I'm still wondering... and wow! I did get 100 ratings! How strange, I never expected 100 ratings in my first game jam.

Outside The Loop by Peace Of Cake Games 2020-10-29T13:53:05Z

Interesting idea about enhancing the loop to make it do different things @arron-fowler ! That could definitely open up a whole world of unique possibilities, like having to knock down blocks, swing over pits, etc.

I'm just going to note something. You've received countless comments making fun of your copy-and-paste game links, claiming you did nothing. Plus several people anonymously posted rude duplicates of your link comments just to make fun of you. It seems to people you're just being a rude spammer, but if they'd just scroll up, they'd see a little something that proves them all wrong...

128.5 Ratings Given!!

I'd just like to say, I'm proud of how you really did go and play those games where you posted comments! It really ticks me off seeing those accusative comments that just insult you, and each one has like 20+ hearts. You were telling the truth and you really did use your comments as bookmarks.

And you made a good game! I used Construct 2 Free Edition for a few years to hone my gamedev skills, I'm actually still a Construct user. (C3 upgrade) You did a really good job, and your art was superb!

Could you export this as WebGL/HTML5 or .exe? Some people, including me, can't get this to work.

Project R.O.O.M by Arad HamidSamiee 2020-10-17T14:29:43Z

@arad-hamidsamiee No way I'd use MacOS! Windows is far superior in terms of professionalism and power. The problem is the only way for me to run your file is with Visual Studio, and it fails to open the file. Really it isn't too late to add a HTML5 option, there was a problem just like this with another game and they added HTML5 just half a week ago or so.

Good job! The audio, story, and world design were all nice. I disagree with the above comment and think that you did the best possible controls. Aside from my game, all other platformers I've seen use Space to jump, and I think it's a bad key because you have to have two hands controlling what could be done with three keys all right beside each other. There were a few problems with the game though: the spikes weren't quite aligned with the ground, and the camera wasn't positioned good at all. I couldn't even see the bottoms of the character's legs most of the time, so I could never see where to jump next. Also, the ground is very uneven and it makes it impossible to jump unless you stand still. Other than those issues, fantastic job on your game!

Vast Trivia Of The Void by JorgeGameDev 2021-04-27T07:39:47Z

Amazing job as usual, Whales And Games! I played this for around 75 minutes before I was like "oh wait I still have around 50 games to rate".

Taking into account the amazing graphics and soundtrack, the ability to add custom questions, and the insane level of polish, this could be your best Ludum Dare entry yet! (And I played Colossorama for quite a few hours in a row) I can't wait to get to work adding some more questions.

As usual I enjoyed seeing all of the Easter Eggs you put in the game! That's one familiar "correct answer" sound, and the Video Games category tile is looking rather "sus". It's floating in space so I doubt it's much of a threat, though.

Also, sorry @jorgegamedev , the trivia host stole all of my cash right before I was about to unlock the ability to play as you. 😕 I did manage to get @moski during one of the few periods where I wasn't constantly getting my money taken away. Turns out duplicate questions are *very very* rare, so I kept failing on ones I didn't know the answers to. 😅

GA GAME ME by Jezzamon 2021-05-18T06:07:46Z

Oh man, this is awesome.... I love the Nintendo GameBoy, and this feels exactly like if you were to put 10 or so Game Paks in the GameBoy at the same time. (Technically impossible but whatever.) This feels like something that would play really great on a GameBoy Advance. (I can imagine how good it would feel to play it on a GBA, fighting the last boss with the D-Pad and A and B....)

As far as gameplay goes this game is genius, and the art and music are perfect for giving me that GameBoy-era feel. Your game last jam got a whole 4 trophies, I can see this game getting you more trophies to add to your LD game trophies collection!

###### (I love Kirby's Dream Land on the GameBoy. No way my LD profile pic could be a fanart of Kirby or anything. 😉)

Onigiri Mining Corporation by wasd 2021-04-27T16:49:10Z

Insane amount of polish on this game, and it's basically a don't laugh challenge! I would love to have a full version of this, this would be a great mobile game.

Remember everyone, this game is free and doesn't have ads! Make sure to leave an honest review in the app.

That was really original! This game has reminded me why I don't play Bananagrams.... it's a miracle I actually got past the second group of words with how dumb I am.

Also,

> I made all by myself (not the font of course, WHO MAKES A FONT FOR LUDUM !!)

[raises hand awkwardly] Yeah, I have the bad idea to make a custom font every Ludum Dare as a sort of tradition, and also to have better graphics.... it's way too time-consuming and I honestly don't know why I bother.... 😅

The Greed of the Dwarves by CocaPasteque 2021-04-27T06:07:59Z

You Killed Someone by RetroSpecter 2021-05-01T15:28:09Z

Really enjoyable Clue-style game! I managed to figure out the best way to play on the third round of the game; I had made the mistake of killing someone who highly suspected me and only got someone kicked out because we didn't have better evidence. Thankfully on the third round I made sure to frame Terry by using silver spoons and then telling Perry. 😈 The whole game anytime someone asked me about myself I *always* said Butler, so no one ever thought I was lying, especially when I said I liked candlesticks.

I honestly have no idea how I managed to use trained elephants in the dining hall, and how I managed to kill someone on the moon.

Now this is pretty darn genius. Let's see what random poorly-rated trash Peace Of Cake Games can come up with other than "A politician may find us a couple of kings, but we can't depend on them." Honestly I don't think that one is *too* bad, but there are certainly better ones....

I love it! It's quite an interesting story. The graphics are great and I can tell you put a lot of time into making the audio so good.

Falling For Treasure by Laaph 2021-05-12T14:45:59Z

The player is a little bit floaty, but personally I love that since it makes the game harder. The fact that you made the blood effect have physics is a really nice touch, too.

Oh man, the graphics.... the fact that you handdrew your graphics and then used your phone to import them to your project.... I don't know how I could ever rate you poorly in Graphics, I'm a *huge* fan of handdrawn graphics. Nothing quite puts as much character into a game as handdrawn or handdrawn-looking graphics. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Your phone has a good camera by the way, if I hadn't have read that you used your phone to import handdrawn graphics I wouldn't be able to tell that they're pictures. (No way my phone could do that 🤣)

Far Side of the Mirror by DDRKirbyISQ 2021-04-28T06:35:50Z

I noticed when I took a break from playing Kirby's Dream Land on the GameBoy (I'm not lying) to see what new submissions there were that you hadn't gotten the game exported yet, and I was excited to see you got it up and running now!

Far Side of the Mirror has cats (😸) and mindblowing art and audio and an otherworldly atmosphere and cool chill birds. I'm eternally grateful to Leopold for giving me a weird rock. Overall I sum this up as perfection!

Another amazing entry, Cocoa Moss!

I GOTTA SH!T by spyispie120 2021-04-29T05:59:04Z

Well this was...... interesting. The fact you can do your business on people's heads in order to buy yourself some more time is both logical and disgusting. I like how you literally used a picture of 7/11 for the store where you buy the toilet paper.

Interesting decision from the player to not just do their business at the store restrooms.

The Pit by fullmontis 2021-04-27T05:16:13Z

Arrrgh, on my third attempt I died at roughly 685 meters..... so close and yet so far.....

I love how it's *super* hard to find the right balance between having enough speed and being slow enough to dodge! Very fun game!

Dipper And Dipper by Marcenat 2021-05-03T06:12:48Z

Very mind-boggling, in a great way! Those boss fights were hard, having to line up the arrows while dodging attacks (and having to trade who has the crate later on) was tricky. The fact the player is never told how to use things like the crates is a good touch, it allows the player to feel like they're accomplishing great feats within the game. Really nice humor and soundtrack, too.

My Friend John by kassanu 2021-05-16T04:19:57Z

This is really neat! I'm honestly afraid to see what my schedule looks like now, I answered positively for everything except for one question where the negative green answer dove in front of the one I was clicking, and one time my touchpad was being weird. 😆 Touchpad not advised for playing this, a real mouse is better.

!> Managed to get the "taking care of yourself is the most important" ending, how good would that one be considered?

Deepest Sword by Strega 2021-05-03T05:18:23Z

When I inherit the Longest Sword and cheese right through two of the areas: "okay, the last area shouldn't be too bad!"

When I find the last area and discover that just the *first* sword jump is basically impossible for someone with poor sword-swinging coordination like me, plus the area is so big it has at least two checkpoints: "AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!" Spent around half an hour on just the first jump of the last area and didn't manage to make it past there.

I'm amazed at how much polish this game has for a 72-hour game! Everything is so amazing this feels like a post-jam game already, not a jam game. Admittedly I can't beat the game thanks to the last area, maybe I'll be able to beat this one day and kill that humorous dragon.

Oh, and congrats on getting the title of second-most rated game on all of ldjam.com. If you get more than 1053 ratings this'll officially be the most rated Ludum Dare game on the entire site.

Deep Cover by Liam 2021-04-26T06:57:44Z

Now this is pretty darn cool! Kind of like card games meet politics meets Among Us. Very very original, I had a blast becoming the most "sus"!

GRAPPLE the Abyss! by lectvs 2021-04-27T04:22:21Z

Post-Jam version, eh? I would love to see that since the boss says they'll be harder in it. I cheesed the last fight a bit too easily.

I love how timing all of the grappling hooks makes it so you must do very precise moves! Making the lava break the grappling hook is a nice touch.

Dome Romantik by Rongo Matane 2021-04-28T05:41:57Z

Amazing! The nice simplicity of the gameplay made it so I was able to figure out how to play after only a few games.

Here's when I got super lucky and hit a huge resource mine when I had maximum upgrades:

Screenshot 2021-04-28 003758.png

That *is* just one vein of consecutive resources 😮, I actually didn't go all over the map to rig this screensnip.

Dome Romantik by Rongo Matane 2021-05-22T05:23:42Z

Whoops.... guess I did something wrong. 😅😖 Bug report!

I gave myself the mission to eliminate every single block in the map since I had all of the upgrades and consequently was way too powerful (my dome had basically unlimited health, hehe). As I was going out for the last mining job before reaching the end somehow I accidently hit Space as I was leaving the dome and the upgrades/combat computer turned on. Tried closing out of it, then I spammed some random buttons, then my dumb brain finally had the sense to realize the game had frozen and crashed by noting the clouds stopped moving.

Screenshot 2021-05-22 001645.png

If this helps, it's the latest Chrome on Windows 10.

(Also, I see that you did lots of gameplay logs in the console.... good idea. Logging stuff is the best way to troubleshoot possible issues 😀)

Date Night by Togis 2021-04-28T04:58:36Z

Very fun, and nice and hard to beat! I like the variety of different tasks to do, if my boss would stop making me make several coffees in a row I would probably get to do most every task in 3 minutes.

Masseuse you Loose by ColeSlaughter 2021-04-27T05:54:42Z

My hands now have a purpose...... 🤩

Once again the Keyboard Cowboys had me laughing the instant the menu came up! I feel like this game is the reason I have a mouse. (*Maybe my mouse is my hands..... that would explain my mouse now having purpose*)

I honestly don't know if anything can even come close to this in the Humor category! (No competition from me, I opted out)

**Translation:**

Saw this game in need of more ratings in the Danger category, and with handdrawn-looking graphics and a cat on the cover, there is **no way** I could have resisted clicking on this.

Oh my goodness, I love this! 😻 It's such an inspiring and moving story, and the fact that it features a cat "fur"ther increases its "purr"fection. You need to get to 20 ratings ASAP, I'll assist.

Also, you ***need*** to make that "Follow the cat" option! I had completely "fur"gotten I was even playing a game, it felt like I was reading a bestselling book. I need to see what happens when I pick that path....

I feel your pain/joy at having cat hair all over everything because your cat is a big sweetie, Feronin. Whether it's my laptop, my pants, or whatever random stuff I have sitting around, nothing is safe from cat hair when your cat is a sweetie.

###### Sorry about all of the bad cat dad jokes. I can't help it, I have issues with making too many dad jokes, even when I'm doing game rating.

Transcendental by pdotjpg 2021-05-03T19:53:55Z

What a good relaxing game! (Until you discover you're bringing 2 or 3 bad thoughts towards you when you grabbed that snowflake, then it's a good unrelaxing game) Admittedly I can't get higher than 220 since I'm obsessed with getting as many snowflakes as I can.... 😅

The Fall of Alice by kr4ft3r 2021-05-05T06:19:15Z

Certainly an.... interesting entry. Personally I don't mind the chiming of the letters too much, some people might complain about them but as long as you don't keep the volume too high they won't strain your speakers and it'll sound pretty nice.

Watching the constant stream of score reports in the browser log is pretty fun.

Duggy by neowhoru 2021-04-27T06:35:09Z

This is *REALLY* polished and professional-looking! Once I figured out that the whole point of each level was to slaughter all of the monsters I had fun turning this pleasant little game into a bloodbath.

Your son sure has talent! Good job to him coming up with this idea.

Oh, and my final score for my best game was somewhere around 58200. Probably could have gotten more, but I learned the hard way that enemies have an invisible square collision field and being anywhere near them is game over.

Oiligarch by dxk2294 2021-05-03T04:32:21Z

Oof, the Board of Directors doesn't even think I deserve a good lose screen....?

That was a pretty fun management simulator! The tutorial could have explained stuff better (and maybe not started the game until I had read everything, since I lost a lot of good stats to that tutorial), but once you do the tutorial once it's not like you need to read it again.

Sky Miner by Simone 2021-04-26T08:00:54Z

Really nice controls! I love it when game controls are snappy and responsive, this driller didn't disappoint.

It would appear that trying to upgrade my driller didn't do anything, I'll have to see if it fixes itself on my 1080p monitor instead of my slightly-bigger-than-720p PC screen.

Stressed to Impress by jtn191 2021-04-28T04:47:22Z

Haha, this was a fun little game! I'm always glad to see fellow Construct 3 users doing Ludum Dare.

The deepest heist by Adrien Dittrick 2021-04-26T05:31:28Z

Really cool! The theme is really well-implemented. I do wish that in the room with the Kung Fu kid (rest in peace) the thief box was a little higher in the room, because the dialogue bar covers up the contents, making it difficult to get the baseball bat.

How to tell that this is a good game: that old grandma totally stumped me. I'll have to give it another shot once I've recovered more brain cells. (I'm a bit worn out from working on my game all day and fixing stuff until there was literally one second left)

Undermined by Alex Davies 2021-05-05T05:54:11Z

I thought I was so cool getting a whole 15 points and then I looked at the leaderboard and @ausstein was sitting at the top with 93 points. 😱 I know @ausstein has a reputation for dominating the leaderboards of every Ludum Dare game that has a leaderboard, but when I got my new high score of ✨**41**✨ (honestly I'm pretty darn proud of it) I was freaking out, the game was going so fast. I guess PCEOFCKE is destined to never beat the Champion Of Every Leaderboard Ever, AUSSTEIN. I think I would have a heart attack at 93 depth.

@ausstein\.... how....

Anyways, now the actual review:

The fact that I'm in the rankings against this Compo game scares me. It's got beautifully simple graphics, better gameplay than Dr. Mario, and sicker beats than Dr. Mario, too. (*Sick*er beats than Dr. Mario.... 🙄 my reputation for making dad jokes lives on.) Honestly I don't know how this could *not* win an award for Audio or Fun or Overall. This feels like the next big Nintendo Switch hit if you were to add multiplayer, not a game made in only 48 hours by just one developer.

A Cat in the Aliens' Lair by Sheinxy 2021-05-03T05:45:43Z

Wow, that last level really challenged my puzzle-solving skills.... took me a while to figure out that the aliens target buttons.

Really nice job! No bugs to report, great graphics, and some epic beats to set the mood.

Callous by MateusBoga 2021-05-05T17:03:04Z

What a deep experience.... very mysterious and sad....

The fact that the touchstones are not only your only way of going back, but they're also how you get scored at the end of the game, is pretty neat.

Crushing Blocks Till You Drop by Jonathan Lorenz 2021-05-16T04:08:16Z

This is a solid entry! Took me a bit to figure out that both digging and jumping take energy, which was a bummer at first since I love it when games have infinite jump. But then I realized that jumping was actually just energy-wasting bait once you get to a descending part. 😁

438.42 meters seems pretty decent, I broke 315 blocks and probably had over 1000 money. Eventually I suffocated even though a huge chain of oxygen was one dig away.... 😟 Oh well, that's what I get for stalling just to get a huge chain of money.

Nanna by gamebuilder 2021-04-26T23:22:25Z

You want me to wait over a minute for the web version to load up, WiFi?!? Okay, I'll wait. I'll wait as long as it takes to play a game by this team.

Congrats on getting the game working in time! It was really fun to play, and @bcav 's music *really* set the mood. I was kind of creeped out and scared, that was some great music. The bonus of winning music was a nice addition! @genie 's art also really set the mood, it really looked like journeying into a creepy forest.

Making the same basic movement code as SHH was a good idea, @gamebuilder , because I really like walking by integers and running by holding a movement button.

Overall, a solid entry that I'm glad I played! Good luck in the rankings!

NO DIGGING by Kovakomes 2021-04-29T03:42:19Z

Oh my, so that's why you shouldn't dig....

I love this little troll game! It did unfocus the mouse lock and refocus it anytime I dug, so I couldn't move the camera when digging otherwise I would be a sitting duck. Other than that it's a bug-free game.

These screensnips @aaranos and I have would make some pretty great desktop backgrounds.

Screenshot 2021-04-28 223801.png

NO DIGGING by Kovakomes 2021-04-29T04:26:00Z

@kovakomes You really deserve a high placement in Humor for this game. 5 stars from me.

Super Turtle Drop by JavaSaurus 2021-04-26T07:26:13Z

Lol you got me. I never download Windows versions when there's a HTML5 version but the only way to access the leaderboard is via Windows app. I can't resist a leaderboard for a game that doesn't have many plays yet....

PeaceOfCake is beating you by quite a bit, @javasaurus . I'm interested to know if there's technically a maximum score that can be achieved before the saws grind me to bits, because 5700 was the result of spamming my mouse button *a lot*.

Anyways.... really nice design! The music is still stuck in my head it's so nice and catchy, and the graphics are really good looking.

Super Turtle Drop by JavaSaurus 2021-05-15T20:30:32Z

Haha, of course the eternal ruler of all leaderboards @ausstein is the new leaderboard champion. Looks like an unbeatable score (possibly because on Training mode I only got around 1000000 points before I got sloppy and was crushed).

Can't say I'm surprised to see the Keyboard Cowboys ranking in at #3.

I AM ROOT by Tamino Laub 2021-05-03T06:22:17Z

I am root, I am root, I am root, I am root.

Translation:

Really cool! I love how the tree starts asking me for water when it's running low. The roots did have some issues with swerving randomly upon being created, but I'm not going to complain seeing as it made it so that if a root spawned inside of a rock the root would be totally invincible as long as it was inside that rock.

Shork by CrispyPin 2021-05-12T14:35:40Z

Mwahahaha those little fishies cannot escape the wrath of the ***Shork***!! Really good graphics and fun gameplay, I loved submarine-ing around chasing the little fishies. I did notice that the project wasn't doing a mouse lock so once the mouse hit the edge of the screen I couldn't turn the camera any more that way. Not much of a problem with the helpful scroll zoom around to help.

The Deep Web by William Corrin 2021-04-26T07:11:14Z

🤯

That's how I feel after playing this.

This is amazing! To think that this hardcore cyberpunk racing game was made in only 48 hours is mindblowing. I would love more tracks and controller support, please make a post-jam version of this!

Oh and apparently the Shift drifting mode only registers for Left Shift. Not sure if that's intentional or not.

Chthonic Brilliance by cassowary 2021-04-29T06:35:26Z

Really fun little game! Sadly I wasn't able to beat it since I'm tired and can't do puzzle games well when I'm getting sleepy, I'll have to get back to this later.

Mindy's Mind by VPhyre 2021-05-18T05:12:11Z

That 48th memory shard.... I'm definitely not a fan of the placement, I had 47 memory shards on my first play of the game and my YOLO jump failed. Played through to the end twice more, both times I got hurled down the last pit when I tried to grab #47. 😓

Heading back to the page for playthrough #4, I'll be back to do some real feedback in a couple of minutes.

###### Aaaaahhhhhh the physics pushed me off of the block and once again I ended with 46.... apparently I suck at platformers now.

Mindy's Mind by VPhyre 2021-05-18T05:47:02Z

My goodness, this game has quite an atmosphere.... you certainly selected some good music! The weird thing is, we had some similar ideas, my game is very similar to yours. 😄 Your game is certainly more polished, though, having a team of 4 work over 72 hours got your game way more polish and length than my solo 48 hour project*.

Gameplay-wise it's really fun (not a fan of the completely hidden 48th memory shard though), feels kind of like a super hardcore Super Mario Bros level, what with the fluctuating running speeds and the tight jumping. (I grew up playing Super Mario Bros 3 a lot, so I love games that control similarly to the original Super Mario Bros games.) There were a few physics bugs (rounded edges on a few blocks, being able to catapult yourself really fast and far by taking damage on the shadows, the shadows being incredibly hard to stomp without taking damage, etc) but in the end it only took me 5 plays to save Mindy. The graphics are spot on, too!

It just came to me, I think I know why I was getting some deja vu playing this, it reminds me a lot of if you were to combine my entry for this Ludum Dare and one of my favorite games from last Ludum Dare, [WHAT I SAW](https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/47/what-i-saw) (though with the quality of WHAT I SAW, not my game). 🤔😀

Oh, and regarding *"Feel free to follow us here at Ludum Dare (let us know that we will follow you back), to continue watching our work closely! :)"*, I'll certainly be watching for whatever it is you make next! I can't wait to see if/what LD49's game will be like.

###### *For reference, my game also has finding objects that trigger flashbacks, a female protagonist doing platforming stuff, and a focus on a dark-ish atmosphere. Except you had the sense to name your protagonist and make sure the theme was clearly communicated. 😅

Mindy's Mind by VPhyre 2021-05-19T03:33:28Z

👏 Well said, @vphyre ! I could definitely relate to poor Mindy while playing, the pandemic has taken a toll on all of us. And as mentioned, we've all got our flaws; it's a part of being human!

I'm already tearing my hair out waiting for LD49, not just because I love the stress of making something with a set idea in a short period of time, but also because I can't wait to see what you make next! Best of luck in LD49!

LuckySwimmer by aCuriosity 2021-05-06T03:34:36Z

Never before has winning made me so confused. (I'm so confused I don't think "confused" is even the right adjective for how I feel.) I honestly don't know what to say other than:

- Good news for you, my face displayed the emotions you were hoping for. - @ddrkirbyisq's comment basically sums up my post-playing thoughts.

Dance of bullets by Onizik 2021-05-01T14:58:04Z

Amazing level of polish! The graphics and music are fantastic, really got me into the rhythm game mood. I love how when an enemy is killed, their eyes turn into huge red X's. I actually ended up playing the game twice since in the first go the audio wouldn't work.

It did seem like the second wave of enemies got a bit too hard at two or three points, there's no way I could beat the second wave without spamming all of the arrow keys on my keyboard and turning the rhythm game into a bloodbath.

Magmatic Descent by Vanea 2021-05-16T03:56:32Z

You're right, it is easy to get softlocked....

I love the graphics, they're kind of simple but that's what gives them their charm! The gameplay was nice, it isn't too hard to get used to the player's movement. The digging did seem to have some buggy directions when I tried digging and running for my life at the same time, but turns out mashing Dig and your direction effectively fixes it.

Deep Sea Mining by Ausstein 2021-05-05T14:49:10Z

Really solid! Probably the most fun I've had playing a submarine game. The gameplay was nice and balanced (and as long as you watch your O2 bar unlike this idiot you'll be fine), the graphics were perfect, and the sounds were very fitting. I'll probably give this another go and try beating the game without ever upgrading the gun, since the rocket launcher's rate of fire is pretty low and apparently I'm really bad at aiming the machine gun barrels.

I noticed that I don't think I technically mined the yellow crystal, I only activated the dialogue, but whatever. If the game wants to make me a millionaire I'll accept!

Oh, and one thing to mention: a tribute to Genesis 1 by making an option to turn the sand into the image of Will Smith would be a pretty funny reference to your past Ludum Dare game. I tried it last night and was doubling over laughing *just reading the comments*. I'm sure you can imagine how much laughter came from me when I was actually playing it.

Deep Sea Mining by Ausstein 2021-05-05T16:14:27Z

@ausstein Ah, that makes sense why I became a millionaire so fast, I probably hit the yellow crystals really fast when I was turning around to escape the guardian monster. Before I mined the yellow crystal I was too broke to have a weapon good enough for fighting the guardian, but I did have the best drill.

I'm actually a bit of a "newbie" compared to Ludum Dare professionals like you who have been jamming for years, Ludum Dare 47 was my first LD. 😅 Sometimes I'll see a game from a Ludum Dare I unfortunately missed when I'm linking to someone's game, and Genesis 1 intrigued me. Games like Genesis 1 are what make me wish I had participated in Ludum Dare before LD47, I missed out on so many great themes and games! At least now you can know that someone (me....) would have rated it 5 stars for Humor without a second thought. 🤣

Bus Crawl by Valid 2021-04-26T06:11:54Z

You made this in 48 hours....? This is incredible! I doubt I could ever do something as complicated as this in a mere 48 hours.... (my Compo game is nothing in comparison to this and I barely made the game in 48 hours of pure stress)

So yeah, this is

- Original - Amazingly complicated for a Compo game - Has nice minimalist graphics - Very easy but not boring gameplay

Also, I like making the longest roads in the game. 😄 Here's my first interstate-level road:

The Tree by adrupen 2021-05-18T07:00:44Z

Mwahahaha, you shall never defeat me, wind! I have reached all the way up into space!

The fact that you gave the root mechanism such smart growing it's practically AI is incredible! Too bad I ran out of space for the roots, I had probably filled up every possible spot for roots and all that was left was expansion into space.

I had the same scenario near the end as @honey-pony , when the wind got really strong (especially when it went over 1000) I would have to sit around waiting for the wind to change direction since the wind was so strong the tree's expansion points blew off-screen.

DO NOT INSERT INSIDE THE EAR CANAL!!! by cheesepencil 2021-05-05T18:59:55Z

I *toooootally* obeyed the safety warnings on the back of the cotton swab package. There's *no way* I could have hit someone's head with cotton swabs over and over again, and then inserted the cotton swab entirely into their head via their ear canal.

5/5 Humor.

6 Feet Under by theStoff 2021-04-29T05:44:25Z

Wow.

The art, the audio, the hardcore gameplay.... best platformer I've played in quite a while. I love all of the little details you added, such as muting the music when you're underground. Also, 13 different game looks, each with their own graphics?!? I'm going to have to check them all out! I beat the game on the GameBoy-looking one, since I had been playing Super Mario Land and Super Mario Land 2 earlier.

118 deaths over 51 minutes.... guess I'm worse at hardcore platformers than I thought. 😅

6 Feet Under by theStoff 2021-04-29T05:55:39Z

@kepsert Oh, I guess I don't stink at hardcore platfomers then. 🤔

I'll be sure to speedrun the game when I go check out all of the themes! I'll let you know what I get. Got to have some time set aside for this though, I've still got around 50 games to rate.... 😅😖

Redeeppedeer by toasteater 2021-04-26T08:43:04Z

Now I'm itching for more....

*Please* make a post-jam update to this! I really want to continue solving the mystery (and admittedly I spent a long time playing moefall.exe)

Redeeppedeer by toasteater 2021-04-26T15:41:04Z

@toasteater I knew you had a game thanks to the notification system.... 😄 I'm a fan after me and my friend laughed our heads off for hours playing Get In The Loop!

Dig World by kuviman 2021-05-17T16:39:23Z

Oh boy, you'd think I would avoid going straight down since it's one of the many rules of Minecraft, but I jumped down a bottomless hole someone made regardless.... at least I became the new leaderboard champion before being forced to close the tab. Might want to make an unbreakable Bedrock-style material at the bottom instead of a void of nothingness, someone dug right into the void and the trap got me too.

Anyways, this was really fun! I didn't really make anything fun like the person who wrote "HI" and "42", but I did made a staircase to get you back up from right above the bottomless pit, I closed up the bottomless pit, and I started making a ladder system so you don't have to take the staircase that took me about 5 minutes to make, the world got so deep. Might head on back there and make more ladder systems, whoever dug straight down the the bottom of the world didn't make any way to get back up (resulting in me spending 5 minutes making a staircase back up to the giant ladder someone built).

Oh yeah and I made a terrible-looking arrow too. There's a ladder pretty far away from spawn point so I indicated how to get back.

Physician, Heal Thy Elf by No Grapes Games 2021-04-27T07:55:09Z

Now that was fun! No bugs or complaints to report. Once again the quality of the art is amazing.

#1 game over screen in the history of game over screens. I laughed out loud when I saw you actually drew that! 😂

SpinPlan by Fupi 2021-05-18T04:13:52Z

This is pretty darn fun! Poor Eggos, I beat them up pretty bad because of the janky physics.... personally I like the janky physics, although it made the game pretty hard it felt like the Eggos actually were in space.

MechaRock by Robonaut121 2021-04-27T16:56:51Z

Wow, this is really good! Catchy music, fun gameplay, and great pixel art.

Turns out getting buried isn't so bad, because I just kept spamming J and eventually the physics make blocks explode over the whole area.

To Return To One's Root by C3ll256 2021-05-03T05:31:00Z

A short and beautiful experience! The mouse controls were a bit weird to me, but that's what I get for using my laptop's touchpad instead of grabbing my mouse, which was only a few feet away from me. 😅

The Dwarven Brigade by Wolfier 2021-05-03T04:22:51Z

What a fun little mining game! Using the pylons to show the dwarves where to go is a neat mechanic.

Thankfully no bugs to report, even when I was playing the original Jam version.

Boris with a crazy dream by Kirby 2021-04-28T06:44:02Z

Very nice and peaceful! My only complaint is that it's such a nice game and I want to play more of it!

Nice job using Construct 3, I'm always happy to see good C3 games!

Now you see me by Haiyoooo 2021-05-07T05:57:37Z

Hmm, 173.... not sure how good that is since posting scores seems to be a rare thing.

Now this is a really original game! I had to mentally keep track of where I was during the white areas, it sure wasn't easy. Managed to get the hang of it after two deaths, thankfully. I love how even when you get to the point of random generation, the shadows are still making the game even better by continuously talking. (The player is on top of the text so I can use the dialogue to my advantage and figure out where I am, hehehe....)

Sporelunk by Brainloaf Studio 2021-04-28T06:04:02Z

When the little mushroom guy screams in agony as it is ripped apart I'm mentally screaming too. Amazingly made horror game!

I kind of root for the horrifying monster to be honest.... being ripped apart is what the little mushroom guy deserves for ***being a cannibal!!*** The cannibalism really completed the horror bit.

River Ravager by PatrickJR 2021-04-26T08:04:22Z

That was fun! I love how spamming the mouse button essentially turns the rifle into a machine gun.

Darn those alligators, they're good.

Beaver Submarine by cagibi 2021-04-26T03:23:10Z

Amazing job! Listening to awesome soundtrack music while playing as a beaver who can't keep his submarine from spinning in circles and going basically nowhere is exactly how to kick off the Rating Period of LD48! I honestly can't think of anything I didn't like in the game, some people might dislike the submarine going crazy but I think it's one of the best features ever in a video game.

I'm interested to know how good a score of 1360 is considered.

The Company Store by 3LSTMsInATrenchcoat 2021-04-26T04:18:21Z

Never before has a game made me realize how truly stupid I am..... I'm amazed I lasted 5 weeks when basically every time I matched coal I ended up making a five-in-a-row of shovels or pickaxes.

Overall a good game! I love how you're doomed to lose and there's no way to win.

(Also, you might want to opt out of Audio since your game has none)

Deeper and Deeper by ishmandoo 2021-04-26T03:55:08Z

Very nice! Making it so that one Deeper goes straight when the other Deeper is being controlled is a good way to force the use of torches, and making the torch checkpoints be unlimited (with a cooldown) is a good feature.

I do feel like Right Deeper's path was way harder than Left Deeper's path, I found the end for Left Deeper almost immediately but I spent an extra ~20 minutes trying to find the path for Right Deeper.

Overall, a good, well thought out game! You definitely nailed the theme, and I really liked the fitting music.

Deeper and Deeper by ishmandoo 2021-04-26T03:56:55Z

Oh, and I did find a bug, at one point Right Deeper managed to go outside of the level somehow. I was trying to navigate Left Deeper away from the ghost and I noticed that Right Deeper's screen was getting rather dark. I didn't notice where Right Deeper glitched through the wall so let's see if anyone else finds this glitch.

How Low Can you Go by SaeedPrez 2021-04-27T16:28:19Z

*Really* big improvement since the in-progress version! The graphics are spot-on, and the audio is perfect for the underwater environment.

Screenshot 2021-04-27 112406.png

That "little fishy" pulled a dirty move and snuck up behind me while I was shooting someone else.... smart "little fishy".

One thing that would be interesting to see in a post-jam version is when you hit certain intervals (every 100 meters?) the sharks stop spawning temporarily and you have to do a boss fight against a kraken or something.

Deep ribbit by teshimoto 2021-04-27T05:31:46Z

Oh my- you really surprised me with this, I was ***not*** expecting an epic 3D shooter RPG! Poor frog, getting constantly shot by enemies....

*Really* great graphics and music!

Zombified by chesschaser 2021-04-27T06:22:19Z

Very nice 3D platformer! I'm glad Jack is okay, even after I chucked him down at least a hundred different pits he still gets to be human again.

###### Beautiful...... 😭

I.... honestly don't know what to say after that........

This game made me feel a whole range of different emotions.......

> Our game is Cooking Mama meets side scroller meets a wholesome story about hope.

Oh yeah. The whole time not only was I listening very carefully to every beautiful written and spoken word, this was also full of nostalgia. Reminds me of days long ago when I would play Cooking Mama with my family.

I remember seeing that the old Ludum Dare site had a cool feature where you could give people trophies. I think it needs to be remade for ldjam.com.....

Now I'm hungry.

###### Mei wasn't the only one with tears in her eyes at the end of the game......

Hey gamers! I would like to notify everyone that the HTML5 version might be running a bit slow, especially during the initial loading stage and transition effects. If you have low speeds I have exports for Windows, MacOS, and Linux.

I would really appreciate it if you can let me know about any issues with the MacOS and Linux versions! I am unable to test them, so I'll need some players to help me out. This is my first time making MacOS and Linux export options so I'm sure there'll be issues. 😖

If anyone is interested in drawing some fanart, you can check out the source code or I can send you an image file of whatever asset you want! This game is fully open source so go ahead and poke around in the file, it's yours now.

Aftermath by Peace Of Cake Games 2021-04-26T05:17:45Z

@mrchickenboy I'm glad you like the music! I'm really going for a moody game and one of the things I gave top priority was the soundtrack. I feel like the game wouldn't really have the right mood if it didn't have a good soundtrack to accompany the game.

Right now the art and music apps are entirely keyboard shortcut operated and not very user-friendly since I made them for personal use, but now that my 48 hours of stress and success are over I'm probably going to work on making them be for a full release as an official software. I'll let you know as soon as I've got a good beta test ready, because I'm sure you'll like the music app (it's made for NES-style chiptune music development).

@metadept thank you! I was excited to be able to implement the little trail of blood, because the ground of the world is made of 3D objects and it's a relatively new feature in Construct 3. I saw that there was a "change image of 3D object side" action and I knew I would make a trail of blood wherever the player walks (or something similar).

Aftermath by Peace Of Cake Games 2021-04-26T06:25:59Z

@valid I'm glad you like the flicker effect! I spent an embarrassingly large amount of time making it not too intense but also intense enough....

The text is a bit too close together, eh? Thanks for the tip, if I make a post-jam version (not much of a game length upgrade but rather quality of life improvements) I'll edit the font some. I used a SpriteFont to make my own font from scratch (a Ludum Dare tradition) so the hard-to-read text is my bad. 😬

@3lstmsinatrenchcoat thanks for playing! You are right, I did plan a little bit more but ran low on time. I did plan on making the discovery of flashback objects have a little image for flashback visualization, but I realized that the way I planned on implementing it it wasn't practical and it was too time-consuming. I was also thinking about a little cutscene for each ending but seeing as I spent hours and hours on the opening cutscene, adding more cutscenes was an idea that got trashed pretty quickly.

Oh darn it, I realized I forgot to add the note about there being three (technically four) endings to the story on the game's page! I'm interested to know how many you found, since I forgot to make a note about it. Also, how do you think the story could be expanded more and given more depth? I'm really open to feedback about that since despite being a writer somewhat, this is my first narrative-based game.

Aftermath by Peace Of Cake Games 2021-04-26T06:56:35Z

@3lstmsinatrenchcoat got it, thanks. I was planning on elaborating more on the end like what you said, but 48 hours is tough and I overscoped a bit. If I do make a post-jam version (questionable since I'm already working on a post-jam version of last LD's game) I'll make sure to remember your advice!

@oadt Thanks for the feedback about that, if I do a quality-of-life improvement update I'll change that.

Aftermath by Peace Of Cake Games 2021-04-26T15:36:14Z

@cagibi lol, a "deeper" story? 😆 But yeah, I might make a small post-jam update to deepen the story and fix the text (really should have made that better initially). Probably won't make an expanded version like what I'm doing with my so-so LD47 game, it'll just be a little fix.

(At least this Ludum Dare I didn't make a gamebreaking bug like last time.... 😣)

Thank you, @toasteater ! And I suppose it isn't.

Looking back at my dialogue choices I think it was a good idea to make the first choice of the game be "investigate" vs "rest since you're tired and injured" instead of "investigate" vs "well I'll go die now". Makes it easier for people to find Ending 1 on their first try. 👻

Aftermath by Peace Of Cake Games 2021-04-26T19:24:05Z

Thank you for playing, @chesschaser ! Any strong points in the game or things that should be improved?

Aftermath by Peace Of Cake Games 2021-04-26T19:45:40Z

Thank you, @bubakgames ! I'm glad you like the music and art, after how much I failed in those two categories last Ludum Dare I made sure to prioritize art and good music.

Aftermath by Peace Of Cake Games 2021-04-26T21:55:01Z

@crazyrems I guess having a bug that let's you fall through the ground by walking left is going to become a tradition for me.... 😖 Somehow every Ludum Dare there's been a bug like that.

I've updated the game page to say how to unlock all of the endings, I hope that helps.

Thanks for playing! Getting feedback on Aftermath is really helpful to me, since this game had a lot of firsts. First narrative-based game, first use of 3D graphics outside of a small demo I made, etc.

Aftermath by Peace Of Cake Games 2021-04-27T03:17:43Z

Thanks so much for playing @emily-pitcher ! Creepy is the exact goal I was going for in the music, it turns out synth pads work pretty well.

###### (To be honest, since all of my previous games I've made were nice and pleasant, even a game called Massacre Dungeon for the most part, I kind of creeped myself out with how dark this is. I've never made something so dark....)

Aftermath by Peace Of Cake Games 2021-04-27T18:13:00Z

Thanks for playing @generalsturgeon ! I'll have to fix the text at some point.

I'm glad you like the handdrawn font, I spent an embarrassingly long amount of time making it. 😅

Aftermath by Peace Of Cake Games 2021-04-27T21:50:29Z

Thanks for playing, everyone!

@gilborn yeah, I was intending to have some more gameplay, but due to the fact I intentionally overscoped just because I have wanted to tell this story for a while, I didn't manage to implement more gameplay.

Nice job, @conduit ! 😁 VENGEANCE WITHOUT MURDER is the closest you can get to a good ending. Technically there is no happy ending, I felt like an ending that made everything be okay might not go well with the dark and depressing atmosphere I made. An ending where the murderer is dealt with in a sensible way before the player dies is the closest I was willing to go to a good ending.

@godsboss oh, that's a good point, it does match the theme! Not only did I essentially make a Minus World, I also unintentionally followed the theme....

Yeah, sorry about the bad choice of font and font color @solweak ! 🙇‍♂️ I'll probably make a post-Compo version in one or two days to adjust that for anyone who wants an enhanced-quality experience.

Aftermath by Peace Of Cake Games 2021-04-28T16:46:55Z

Thanks for playing, everyone! This Ludum Dare was all about expanding my horizons: first Compo attempt, first attempt at 3D objects in a Ludum Dare game, first time ever doing a narrative-based game despite being a bit of a writer, first time using my own art and music apps for some of the assets, etc. All of your compliments and criticism really help me know the strengths and weaknesses of my first ever Compo game.

@crowvax I'm glad you enjoyed Aftermath! This area of game development is new to me (despite being a fairly experienced developer), so I'm glad you liked the feel of it.

@brainloaf-studio That's a good idea, adding a text advancing button! (Or maybe I'll just make a button to skip the opening cutscene entirely) Thanks for the recommendation, I'll put that in the small update I'm working on.

Thank you, @linus-lindberg ! Mood is basically *the* category I feel good about. 🤔

Aftermath by Peace Of Cake Games 2021-04-28T19:22:01Z

Thank you for playing, @thijs-tak ! I agree that the text is rather hard to read at times, that's something I plan to fix.

Aftermath by Peace Of Cake Games 2021-04-29T00:25:01Z

@sakura-magika Yeah, sorry about that, it's not a bug! I kind of sapped up all of my time working on the opening cutscene and redrawing the player (I'm terrible at drawing people quickly) so I didn't get to make actual objects. 😕 The original plan was to gather all of the flashback objects and an object that allows you to get the end (rope/wood or knife), and then walking into range of the ending would trigger the appearance of the criminal.

Funny thing is, all of the things you think should be improved upon were things that I had planned to implement but ran out of time to do! Proof of your story- and game-making mastery. This technically is a post-jam sketch of what I pictured in my head during development, not an actual pre-development concept art, but here:

MyDrawing (11).png

I technically could have done a "click or press a button to advance text" mechanic with basically no effort at all, but I made the dialogue system when I was tired (and therefore dumb and not thinking about easy solutions clearly). Maybe next Compo I'll wake up early instead of staying up late.... 😅😴

I had also planned on making different backgrounds for the different endings (i.e. blood splatter background for Ending 2, player's body for Ending 1). In the end I didn't implement as much as I wanted to, but this was my first time doing the Compo and my first time seeing how long a narrative-based game with some animation would take, so at least I made something! I intentionally overscoped since this is a game idea I've had for a while, so I basically intentionally doomed myself.... switching to the Jam might have given me more time but I didn't want to try the Jam when it's the 48th 48-hour event. 🎉

Thanks for all of the feedback!

Aftermath by Peace Of Cake Games 2021-04-29T03:22:54Z

@sakura-magika I'm honestly not sure if I'll do a post-jam version beyond fixing the text, adding objects, polishing the graphics, etc. quite yet. Maybe if Aftermath does good in the rankings I'll make a post-jam version! (But then again I'm not really someone who considers the rankings when making post-jam versions, seeing as last Ludum Dare's game did terribly because my time management skills were terrible. I'm making a complete remake of it despite it completely flunking every category)

Good luck in the rankings! I expect your game will probably place pretty high in a lot of the categories.

Aftermath by Peace Of Cake Games 2021-04-29T07:22:03Z

Thanks for the input, @kwaku ! Readability of the text is one of the first things I'm going to fix in the post-Compo version coming in the next few days, seems like most everyone agrees I made the font too hard to read.

Wait, the A button doesn't work? Thanks for letting me know, I'll look into it.

Aftermath by Peace Of Cake Games 2021-04-29T07:34:40Z

Thank you for playing, @arthur-mairs ! Nice and simple was my goal for the graphics, I decided some simple handdrawn-looking graphics would be nice for my first narrative-based game. (And also the time limits of the Compo....)

Aftermath by Peace Of Cake Games 2021-04-29T15:55:56Z

@miej 🤣 I'm interested to know how that'll turn out.

Thank you, @xiyou ! I was interested in making an atmospheric game since generally the games I make are just slightly bland action games, I'm glad I didn't completely fail. 😅

I'm glad you find it to be creepy, @neshtyak , because that's the exact mood I was going for! I've never made a narrative-based game, tried to have a very strong atmosphere and mood in the game, or made anything so dark, so honestly I creeped myself out a little when I did the final result of my 48 hours of work.

Sorry about the text being fast and difficult to read, I really blundered there and fixing the text will be the first thing I work on in the small post-Compo update.

Aftermath by Peace Of Cake Games 2021-04-29T22:37:36Z

@peachtreeoath Ha ha, I did put Ending 1 in there rather early!

Hm, that's interesting you thought that maybe the player would be the villain. It is true that they were the murderer all along in a sense, seeing as the murderer got murdered.

I agree that Ludum Dare is all about trying something new! It's thanks to Ludum Dare that I actually have the courage to try making games for commercial release, and without Ludum Dare I would never have been introduced to the emotional power of narrative games and visual novels.

Aftermath by Peace Of Cake Games 2021-05-02T14:44:26Z

Thanks for playing, @kiptok @tigermouse @felo07 !

@felo07 Yeah, some of the game interactions are a little uncomplete due to the low amount of time for the Compo, I had planned to have a post-Compo fix for them up and running yesterday but I haven't finished it yet.

Aftermath by Peace Of Cake Games 2021-05-03T21:09:19Z

Thank you for playing, @bentglasstube and @oddarock ! I agree that there are some important things that could be changed, I had intentionally overscoped despite this being my first Compo entry. Hopefully I will have the minor post-Compo update complete soon, I had planned on making the post-Compo update to address some of the important issues but I was unable to work on it when I had planned to.

Aftermath by Peace Of Cake Games 2021-05-04T01:24:29Z

@rawbits Oops, I guess I didn't specifically write "A *button*". Sorry about the confusion! Pressing A does indeed only work on an Xbox 360/One/Series X|S controller, the keyboard interaction controls are exclusively Z and X instead of A and B. (Apparently some of the ABXY buttons on my Nintendo Switch Pro Controller work too, not sure which button is which in relation to an Xbox controller) Probably should have made it change the text depending on whether or not a controller is connected.

As for the use of the theme, when I upvoted "Deeper and deeper" I knew that almost everyone would go with the obvious digging or diving game. The way the theme was implemented in Aftermath is sinking deeper and deeper into feelings of vengeance (or in the case of Ending 1, pain that ends in death). I've never really been someone to take a theme or idea literally when the easiest idea is obvious to everyone.... honestly I'm not incredibly impressed with this Ludum Dare's theme.

Aftermath by Peace Of Cake Games 2021-05-05T19:35:17Z

Thank you, @cheesepencil ! 48 hours is certainly harder than I thought, now I see why it's best to focus on the story rather than "proper" gameplay.

Aftermath by Peace Of Cake Games 2021-05-05T22:39:32Z

@kr4ft3r Thanks for playing, and the extensive feedback! Regarding going too far to the left and disappearing: yeeeaaaaaah, that's a bug. I forgot to make it so the player can't walk off the edge of the world! 😆 The game is still beatable though, the player will just be falling Alice-style (without the pixel art butt) underneath the ground of the world and you can make them move right and left still. I have some more details about it up in the **Known Issues** section of the game page. The weird thing is, I had an almost identical bug last Ludum Dare....

Nice job getting every ending! There are three different endings, and if you find the criminal with or without the knife (but still without the rope) there are actually two variations. (Further described in the **How to unlock all of the endings** part of the game page. It requires you to click it to view it)

Wow, some real philosophical thought about how one-dimensional and plain the antagonist is.... a lot of this game is up to the player to interpret, but the general bit of info is that person you end up either killing or apprehending is in fact villainous. They burned down a town of innocent people....

I may have managed to make a Compo game with actual endings, but I read your Fall Of Alice devlog, and I'm impressed! You and your partner made a pretty solid game in much less time than me. (I worked myself to death, just gamedev and sleeping took up about 36 hours, and it was a busy weekend for me too so I have no idea how I managed to get ~20 hours of gamedev.) I hope to see more of your fun creations in future Ludum Dares!

Aftermath by Peace Of Cake Games 2021-05-12T14:24:45Z

Thanks so much for playing, @gamebuilder ! I'm glad you liked it, I honestly had no idea if I would finish since this was an overscoped concept I had been wanting to make a game of for a while. It's not quite as polished as your entry, but at least I made something playable, especially when I was using untested features and apps....

Aftermath by Peace Of Cake Games 2021-05-13T03:33:21Z

Thanks for playing @coleslaughter ! Not going to lie, I honestly have no idea how I managed to get 4 endings implemented in one weekend, I was working on it right up until the deadline and as is apparently tradition for me now, I eliminated critical bugs within the last few seconds. 😕 Honestly I'm proud of my dark little game having more than one ending despite not getting to do everything I wanted. (That's what I get for intentionally overscoping 😅)

Aftermath by Peace Of Cake Games 2021-05-15T04:50:42Z

Thanks for playing my game on stream, @togis ! Sorry about the awkward word spacing, I think I rushed the font a bit much. 😖 Whenever I get around to making a post-jam game (I gave up on the idea of a post-jam update since there's too much to be improved) the font is right at the top of the to-do list.

I'm glad you liked the graphics of the little opening cutscene, I don't code cutscenes very often so that ended up sucking away 3 or 4 hours of time. 😅 Glad to know it didn't end up being a total waste.

Aftermath by Peace Of Cake Games 2021-05-15T05:15:43Z

All right, finished the playback of the stream, thanks for all of the great in-depth feedback! It's not often I get to see other people play my projects without me giving them hints; getting honest feedback and letting the player experience everything fully on their own really helps me figure out what could be better.

Sorry about the bad text, strong flashing, audio, and fast and unskippable dialog system, guess I really don't work well late at night. 🙇‍♂️😅 All of those were things I was implementing at 2 or 3 AM in the morning, now I know to get up early instead of going to sleep late. I really could have made a better dialog system if I hadn't ended up being pretty dumb when programming at 3 AM, I made a working dialog system in about 5 minutes earlier just to show myself that I could have done better. 😴 I'll definitely be adjusting this into a polished post-jam game that basically fixes up everything that could be better or didn't make it due to the strict 48 hours.

Aftermath by Peace Of Cake Games 2021-05-15T14:34:12Z

@laaph Thanks for playing! *"It's not the greatest game but I love this sort of homemade feel"* is basically exactly what I aim for; I like making games with a strong feel of homemade-ness coming from them, sort of like a proof of my efforts. I won't ever be the best artist or sound developer out there, so why worry about that? I like to make games people can just enjoy playing.

I actually made the font with Construct 3's SpriteFont plugin, it allows you to make and edit fonts on the fly by pulling up font data from a Sprite-style image you draw right inside of Construct 3. It's pretty effective for making fast handdrawn or pixelated fonts and not having to spend time surfing the web for free fonts. Looks like I deleted my dev screensnip of me drawing the font since I didn't think I would need to keep them since I kept forgetting to take dev screensnips throughout the development. If you're interested in the font it's right here:

Aftermath Font.png

(It looks pretty bad in-game because I forgot to edit the character and word spacing....)

Aftermath by Peace Of Cake Games 2021-05-18T18:07:33Z

Thanks for playing @fupi ! I 100% agree that the text was poorly made and spaced and too small, I put myself in charge of the graphical and gameplay stuff like object interaction and text design at around 2 AM each night, so my game is pretty weak in those aspects. Trying to make the game have a little bit of gameplay was a bit of a blunder, I'm a total idiot when I do Ludum Dare programming too late at night. 😴

Sorry about walking off the edge of the world. 🙇‍♂️ As I noted in the Known Issues it technically doesn't break the game, but it's still a pain. (I probably should have made a bug fix patch by now, but I'm waiting to do any post-Compo updates since there's too much that the Compo's small time limit scratched off of my to-make list.... I plan on making a post-Compo version with everything I could have made if I had 24 more hours.)

Aftermath by Peace Of Cake Games 2021-05-18T18:47:58Z

Thanks for the kind words, @fupi ! 😊

Aftermath by Peace Of Cake Games 2021-05-18T20:25:27Z

Thanks, @vphyre , I'm glad you enjoyed my game! (And yeah, our games are pretty similar but it's clear that your team is better at getting more polish in!)

---

Wow, @moski , thank you for all of the feedback! I'm glad you liked the opening cutscene (I used up about a 5th of my development time on it 😅), and I do agree that the player animations could use more frames, there could be some stars in the sky, etc. This was quite an ambitious project for me, since a majority of the tools and plugins I used were experimental and untested, plus this was my first time making a game in under 2 days. I intentionally overscoped.... 😆

I honestly don't remember if I added some little details to the wrecked houses, I haven't opened the project file in weeks except for when I retrieved that image of the protagonist.... 🤔 Generally I build games at a 480p resolution since that was the default window size of a project in Construct 2, the engine I first used for learning to program games. The advantage of it is I'm pretty good at eyeballing how big images need to be, but the downside is little details often get unseen when it upscales. Next Ludum Dare I'll be sure to try and put the resolution closer to 720p so little details don't get erased when the canvas upscales. (I'm betting that 720p won't have to be downscaled for anyone, even my relatively small screen size is around 720p resolution.)

> I’m glad I managed to get to this one on time just before the ratings end. It’ll be my last game of the jam, and it’s quite a fitting closure, I’d say. A character dying as the jam wraps up. We should all be poets

That is quite a fitting ending! It's quite a nice ending to LD48 for me, too, having the last reviewer be none other than a game artist I certainly look up to as a superior artist. 😁

Deeper Every D8 by notanimposter 2021-05-16T04:43:36Z

Now this is pretty darn awesome. As a big fan of both anime and the early Nintendos, this art style was basically made for me. The gameplay is fun, though I do have some guilt about only dating some people so I could hunt down the people the cards say I'm destined to be with.... 😢 I honestly feel bad about that, but at least I got to be with my predicted soulmates.

Oh boy, you're right, I should *not* play in fullscreen. Collisions went all over the place after I tried hitting the fullscreen button.

PANEMUAN by etrealjunior 2021-04-26T06:41:30Z

This is *really good!* A beautiful emotional story about life, with amazing use of the layer parallax in Construct 2....

I'm speechless.

Deeper and Deepar (Now on Itch.io !) by KingBlop 2021-05-06T19:15:50Z

🤣 Very few games have had me cracking up the entire time I've been playing! This game is fantastic, I'd better go make a Funny Games Recommendations Post Part 2 ASAP. Voice acting is genius, dialogue is hilarious, the whole game is just ridiculous in the best way possible.

Pâquerette Down the Bunburrow by Herbie Puppy 2021-05-23T05:38:15Z

Hmm, you're right, that 2-trap level is a little odd, especially because I forced the bunny down the hole using only 1 trap. 🤔 And I could have sworn it went straight into the rock, not randomly went left down the hole....

Screenshot 2021-05-23 003317.png

I'm interested to know, did I get all of 'em? 🐰💕

Pâquerette Down the Bunburrow by Herbie Puppy 2021-05-24T20:48:27Z

@herbie-puppy Whew, I'm glad I got 'em all! Probably spent around an hour trying to do the bunny down the hole glitch. 😅

I saw you're going for a Steam release, best of luck! Never before have I had so much fun getting outsmarted by bunny NPCs, it's definitely worthy of a post-jam Steam version.

Thrice Upon A Time by sakura_magika 2021-04-28T05:53:51Z

Amazing job! I loved getting to read about each character, and the mini-games were nice and fun. I like how the Archery one requires both releasing the shot at the right time and starting the shot at the right time.

Thrice Upon A Time by sakura_magika 2021-04-29T00:03:19Z

@sakura-magika Personally I think the difficulty of the archery game is *juuuuuust* right, it was challenging enough to be fun but not even close to ragequit level.

Deep Fall by fire_soldier888 2021-04-26T17:53:17Z

Nice little game! An everlasting version of this would be fun to play, but I also like how you made it so there's a clear goal to give the player the satisfaction of winning.

I did notice that in my second time (I decided I wanted a perfect score) some obstacles spawned right at the center of the Earth. It counted as me finishing though so I didn't take damage. (Perfect score achieved! 😎)

Awfully Good Pizza by beahives 2021-04-29T07:35:59Z

This game is pure genius. Not only do you get to play as the greatest pizza villain ever and ruin everyone's lives, you also get to make art without ever having to run back out to the store for more ingredients. 😈

Beautiful polish on the art and gameplay, and what few sounds are in the game are perfect.

Here are a few demonstrations of the wrath of the ultimate pizza villains: the person playing your game.

Screenshot 2021-04-29 020523.png

**What's wrong, Mario? I thought you liked mushrooms.**

Screenshot 2021-04-29 020328.png

**A beautiful demonstration of pizza topping architecture.**

Screenshot 2021-04-29 015245.png

**Everyone knows normal pizza has tomato sauce on it, kid. There's no BBQ Chicken option for the pizza so eat your tomatoes like a good boy.**

@itx-demi That is an amazing demonstration of the power of the Ultimate Pizza Villains, the players. 👏👏

Atlantis Gold by SuperFishBoy 2021-04-29T17:57:36Z

Wow, that was fun! It's a really nice twist on the falling games, the physics are spot-on. Graphics are really good too, and that music...... wow. If you don't do good in the Audio category I will hunt down everyone that voted low in the Audio category and ask them why they don't appreciate well-made music.

I didn't actually ever have to buy any upgrades, so I'm not sure if the upgrade system is entirely necessary?

DrillDrill: The Quest for Diamonds by Hoeleboele 2021-04-26T05:45:10Z

This is really polished for a Compo entry! Drilling those diamonds is *so satisfying....* The controls seemed a bit floaty at first but I got used to it after a few games. I'm not quite sure why I kept winning at random points, but I kept winning so I guess I can't complain.

I also noticed that if you don't fullscreen the game it'll cut off parts of the screen. Not sure if that's an itch.io issue or a Unity window problem?

Run, Glim, Run! by Neshtyak 2021-04-29T06:41:14Z

Nice auto-runner! The stalagmites were a bit unforgiving, though; whenever I had to jump to a higher platform to dodge a stalagmite or get light I would always land on top of a stalagmite since I couldn't see them.

Deeper Inside LD48 by Ansh Mishra 2021-05-06T04:54:00Z

Really pulled some heartstrings.... it's beautiful and sad, and the music is so fitting. 😢 The simplicity of the art is perfect, too. Nice job!

She Waits Below by AbigailCorfman 2021-05-07T21:28:40Z

😦 Gives me the chills....

!> ....thankfully once I realized I was dealing with a kitty I was slightly less creeped out. I love cats! :D Just two lines of text makes me want to go down into that dusty basement just to hug the kitty.

Very atmospheric game, I love simple but interesting puzzle games like this!

!> Not going to lie, becoming a spider totally creeped me out. Those little creepy-crawlies have always creeped me out, they seem so otherworldly.... in a kind of scary way.

Not The Urchins! by Cammin 2021-04-26T08:11:08Z

I love it! Those sick beats go perfectly with the game. I do kind of feel like the game hates me, though, but maybe that's what I get for using the D-Pad on an Xbox controller. (Xboxes aren't exactly known for having good controller D-Pads....)

IHM: Race to the Bottom by T90. 2021-05-18T14:35:49Z

What a fan little game! Poor main character, without any way to not buy upgrades and agree to do stuff they're doomed to sink deeper and deeper.... Got to admit, I did love clicking the upgrade buttons even though I was completely ruining the main character's life, clicking random upgrade buttons is very satisfying.

Hide In The Dungeon by crowvax 2021-04-28T06:57:59Z

This was really fun! The bobbing of the player as it walks is genius, I love it! The puzzles were really nice, I had fun on the last door. No issues to report with the Windows desktop build, it worked flawlessly.

Gulp! by GoodGamesJames 2021-04-26T07:17:34Z

Really fun! I love the blood particles when you hit something, and that game over screen is perfect.

That last boss plays dirty! It wouldn't stop pushing me into the walls and causing damage. As a result it felt pretty good killing that last boss.

##### Go Construct 3!

Dungeon Painter by IanTheBee 2021-05-19T20:14:48Z

Just checked out the source code, thanks for the C3P file! I was interested to know how you made the painting mechanic, I see that you used a DrawingCanvas. Good idea making it paste splatter effects onto the DrawingCanvas, I played through the whole thing and it works flawlessly.

Watch Your Step by Kooky 2021-05-09T15:02:37Z

3019 on my 2-leg run, 1300-ish for 3- and 4-leg runs, and then on the 5-leg run I lost all but one of my legs before 1300 and made it to 3229 with only one leg.... 🤔

This is great, nice job making this during the Compo time! The leg feature is a very unique addition, making it so each time you play you get an extra leg (essentially an extra life) definitely gives this some good replay value. I love the little legs flying all over the place!

Deep Finger by Sephy 2021-05-12T21:49:22Z

Oh my- this is both brilliant and disgusting. Certainly one of the most.... unique uses of the theme that I've seen.

Anyways, it's a really well made Snake-like game. The addition of making an undo button was a very smart idea, Space is a lifesaver now. I honestly have no idea how both the finger and the nose are perfectly fine.

Deep Sea Tycoon by Udo2 2021-05-18T13:43:15Z

All right, it would appear I'm terrible at oil mining. 😆 At the start of the game everything was being measured in hundredth decimals, so I thought I could exploit the system and buy sports cars for 0.01 and sell them for 0.03. Then my stupid brain took a second look at the prices when my supply of money went down a little bit and I realized why I shouldn't play mining simulators when I've only been awake for around 30 minutes. 🤣

This is a pretty solid mining simulator! The fact that you managed to make this *and* another game is really impressive. Great job!

LD49 — Unstable

Dogs++ by Jezzamon 2021-10-09T05:17:14Z

I always thought I was more of a cat person, and then I saw a dog that looks exactly like Kirby.... 🤔

This is *so polished*! Go stick this on Steam, you'll get the money for Steam's game registration fees back in no time. Microsoft would like to let you know that they're interested in having this on Game Pass, you're going to get rich off of something this innovative.

Hikari’s Journey 光の旅 — the umbral world by Junber 2021-10-21T07:46:15Z

Wow.... atmosphere and feels and heartstring pulling and *so much sympathy for the main character* all in one game. This is exactly what I've been looking for this Ludum Dare: a serious game about mental health where the character's unstable mental state isn't used jokingly. Poor mental health is no joke, this game really captures the seriousness of it. I was barely breathing during the dialogue parts, you had me so captivated and in awe.

Also, *multiple engines for one game?!?* I'm amazed at how just a few people managed to make such a game, it really is awe-inspiring. And now I know why I kept having to jump all across Itch. 🤔

I do feel like the Sokoban-style parts had quite the extreme difficulty curve, I barely managed to get to The World even with the walkthrough and I just ragequitted then. (Sokoban is one of the few games that frustrates me enough to ragequit)

Overall, I'd rate this game as Perfection/10. This is an absolute masterpiece, one of the greatest games of LD49. Thank you for making such a beautiful story about dealing with depression and anxiety, and not making unstable mental health be a thing that is mocked for bonus theme points!

Kasprzak Saves Us All! (Again) by Phobos001 2021-10-08T04:54:11Z

I desperately want @pov to play this. This game has it all: humor, cool graphics, options you can't click but I clicked it anyway, and Mike Kasprsak. Very well done!

Chickie Catchers by DDRKirbyISQ 2021-10-05T00:12:03Z

*Kiiiiiittiiiiieeeeesssss!!!* 😻

Way to take the theme to an extreme, Cocoa Moss! This is so hard singleplayer, took me forever to figure out how the heck the cat tree could even stay balanced. Guess it's time to try the good ol' "two controller technique" later and play Two Player Mode with me and my foot. Guess it is useful that I own six PC-compatible controllers.

I definitely hear the Kirby's Dream Land 3 in the music and SFX, and there's no way I'd ever complain about hearing some nostalgic Kirby-style music. 👍

Trailer Trials by thomz12 2021-10-06T04:08:02Z

Well, let's see how long I stay 2nd in Level 1 and 4th in Level 2.

This is one great game! I always appreciate an online leaderboard, I can never resist the chance to slap my name in there no matter how many tries it takes. My only complaint would be that sometimes the game had trouble registering the truck parking, when trying to shave off a few milliseconds in Level 1 there were several times the game refused to accept the truck as parked even though it was there.

Puzzled Love by Yaroslav Kravtsov 2021-10-05T16:41:53Z

Whew, it's not often I get to slap 5 stars for Innovation on a game without a single moment of hesitation! This is so incredibly creative, and you even made the shape of the puzzle pieces change depending on the mood, which is a genius touch. My heartstrings were pulled, my eyes were impressed, and my brain kept going "wow!" so this is one darn good game.

Angry Girl Wants Buns by almost 2021-10-09T04:21:45Z

Mmmmm, buns....

Very good levels of polish! The graphics are extremely cute, I love 'em!

SEXY BOOBY 95 by silkworm_sweatshop 2021-10-08T08:22:04Z

Yeti must die.... yeti must die.... yeti must die.... I thought I was doing *so good*, and then that STUPID FLOATING YETI got me with the most beautifully unexpected jumpscare ever.

The annoyingness of this game is beyond what anyone could ever have expected. This is absolute perfection as far as abominations go, and remember to ***always pet the kitty***.

Seriously, did you think I wouldn't make a beeline for the BSoD button? The instant it loaded up I went for the start menu and saw a BSoD program, if someone tells me there's a BSoD program in a game I *have* to hit it. 😅

Cro-Mathnon by PeachTreeOath 2021-10-09T05:28:40Z

Once word: INNOVATIVE. This really is the future of society! The way each level is different in multiple ways keeps each level nice and fresh.

I did have some cases where I would go for an X but there was a ÷ hidden behind it.... (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ The beauty of combat with numbers, always unpredictable.

Instability by R3L0ad1 2021-10-04T18:40:20Z

....

Screenshot 2021-10-04 133558.png

Yeah, I'm not great at this....

This is one *really* polished jam game, and a Compo entry no less! The graphics are spectacular. My only suggestions for a post-jam version would be to make the player less touchy (for a precise speedrunning game, the player is incredibly touchy) and to make ropes easier to swing between. Chains of 3 or more ropes get nearly impossible for me, the ropes get in the way of the player when you try to swing.

I got the unbridgeable gap bug too, there was a screen-wide gap that was both too far and too high to jump across.

HotHead by johnnysix 2021-10-04T03:41:52Z

Construct for the win! It's all thanks to Construct 2 that I know how to do anything, it's always good to see people still using it.

This is one *really* polished little game! The character is funny, the death screen is highly entertaining, and the graphics are really good. Definitely going to have to take a look at the CAPX sometime, I'm interested to know how certain things were made in Construct 2 (I can't imagine making my Ludum Dare project without Construct 3's Tween feature and the currently beta-only 3D and mouse locking).

I don't think I'm even going to try challenging your high score, it's too good. 😅

★KICK GUM★ by vlandemart 2021-10-18T20:14:03Z

This feels exactly like every online game ever. (And I mean that in a good way) Very well-made, I love how you can just make the AIs do everything for you! (Thanks @memoryfloater 😉)

I died with

Screenshot 2021-10-18 151005.JPG

but some of the AIs spawned after the reactor became unstable and kept throwing stuff everywhere, so I managed to boost my score by doing nothing.

Screenshot 2021-10-18 151052.JPG

Heck, I'll gladly take an extra 2000 points!

The Train Station Mage by Togis 2021-10-05T02:09:35Z

Well I'm terrible at this. 😆

This doesn't really seem like something made in a mere 72 hours! The animation is so smooth and the gameplay is so well-thought out, I think this could be a Steam hit if you make a post-Jam version. My only suggestion would be to make it so that cargo is guaranteed for each train, I had a train with nothing but three green cars and none of the respective cargo.

Pop Shove-It by ColeSlaughter 2021-10-05T00:37:04Z

The Keyboard Cowboys are riding once again and I'm enjoying EVERY MINUTE of it! 🤠👍

You guys are absolutely hilarious, making such a serious game about rolling a table around. Definitely not recommended to play it with a touchpad, but once I pulled out my mouse things got epic (and about 6 times easier). I also feel like a total idiot for not realizing I could grab the edges of the device and tilt it to, like, move.... 😏

Balkanization 1 by kr4ft3r 2021-10-04T22:17:58Z

Whew, that got violent. 😈 Fighter jets will always annihilate mere soldiers.

I'm not a fan of Civilization, but I loved this! The gameplay feel of it just feels so nice. My only request would be to make it so I can choose who to pick on (unless I'm missing something and you can already do that), it got kind of hard to slaughter innocent lives when those innocent lives also turned guilty of murder and assembled fighter jets to match my maximum-size fleet. Kind of felt like conflicts were going nowhere when each country had the exact same things.

Cybotica by neowhoru 2021-10-09T04:37:21Z

You say "controller is untested", I say "COME HERE CONTROLLER!" Controller support confirmed as working, I used my trusty ol' Xbox 360 controller and it worked great! Left Stick is move, Y is jump, B is shoot. Probably going to play this again a little later and see how my Nintendo Switch Pro Controller feels with it, using a Nintendo controller would really complete the mood.

You made a fully destroyable world. In 48 hours. And had time to polish it. How did you do this, this is no average Compo entry! The fact that you added recoil to the gun is amazing, you really thought of everything.

COME ALIVE! by Angela He 2021-10-08T06:18:43Z

Seeing that Itch has been instructed to call this "flaming cheeto" is one of the most hilarious things I have ever seen, I haven't laughed that hard in months! 🤣 Now I want some Cheetos and cake.

First things first: my initial reaction was along the lines of "OH FRICKING HECK IT'S ANOTHER SCARY ONE" and I waited until midnight to download and play it. Was that a good idea? Yes. **Anyone reading the comments before playing for some reason, wait until midnight to play this!** My heart was barely beating and I was barely breathing at the

!> hiding under the bed scene.

Some of those scary moments and jumpscares got me *GOOD*, that's what I get for playing at *12 FRICKING A.M.* to maximize the horror vibes.

I think the plot can be summed up on one word: yes. Very few people can tell a story this good in 3 days (glances at @emily-pitcher 's [submission](https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/49/dear-ghost)'s nothing-but-5-stars rating), this is perfection. I can only wish to one day be as good at drawing as you are, I absolutely *suck* at digital art and drawing people in general. Proportions are too hard, I'd rather draw a blob.... :P

As far as characters go, these are some *really* well-developed characters! I can't help but notice Pav's Zelda liking, I recently began playing Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild and I've played and watched games all the way back to the original NES game so I recognize the Triforce and Sheikah Eye and all that. 👍 The characters are just AlL sO lIkEaBlE, characters are one of the most important parts of a story and you broke a hammer nailing them so hard! Also always indescribably happy to see a whole ton of LGBT characters as usual, as a fellow LGBT person that always makes me happy. [Insert non-binary flag while also playing the classic slap sound effect]

The audio is spot-on too, the horror music of the serial killer is going to give me nightmares tonight. I also need to note that I'm happy to have played a serial killer game, during Theme Voting I half-joked that if the community dared to do "One tool, many uses" the temptation to make a serial killer game would probably be too strong for me to resist. I can't draw crap, making a serial killer/yandere game would be the hardest thing I've ever done....

Overall, this game really speaks to me. Death, cake, LGBT characters, and a reason to almost cry over just a couple of small jumpscares, it's perfect. 😆 Especially the cake and death and LGBT-ness, all of that is in my profile pic/logo after all.

Once again, another flawless and breathtaking entry! It really is awe-inspiring. It hits you with pure atmosphere like a brick wall, and the controls are extremely intuitive even for a touchpad user like me. (Two-finger-tap to right-click on Windows is a lifesaver) The horror element is perfect for an October jam, just like last year's entry (do I sense Celeste vibes from WHAT I SAW?). Here are your 5 stars of flawlessness, go get yourself even more trophies. Now if you'll excuse me, I need to make sure to get some Flaming Cheetos sometime soon! 😂

COME ALIVE! by Angela He 2021-10-08T06:19:47Z

Oh, and bug report, I don't know why but for most of the game the dialogue choices would only be visible for a split second. Probably my fault for opening and closing the characters list so much.

The Space-Ton Device by Sinci1 2021-10-21T20:00:23Z

Nice and innovative! Changing the mass of the weights (within certain limits) to keep the platform balanced is a neat mechanic, I've never seen that in a game before. The menu credits text was hard to read, but I think it helped the theme of an arcade game be delivered quite nicely. The graphics really give it the arcade game feel!

Hotel by imod 2021-10-08T07:33:35Z

@k-baskakova

> Has anyone found at least one ending? :)

Found 2 endings! Naturally I got the "YOU ARE A FAILURE" ending twice, as I like to call it, and third time's the charm and I finally got an ending that doesn't tell me I'm a failure. Can't say I didn't see 104 coming.... I saw that ending coming from a mile away, the game page's artwork specifically. Any way to get an ending that pleases the boss so I actually become "useful"?

This game has a fantastic level of polish! The dialogues are well-written and definitely give me some idea as to what's behind each door (I suspect there's a serial killer or something in 105). I definitely feel sorry for room 103, sounds hectic in there.

The Landscape Hates You! by RonanRory 2021-10-08T06:45:46Z

All right, enough depressing crap about this game supposedly being crap, this is one of the best games I've played this Ludum Dare. The "boing" and "Boing?" and "BOING" sound effects are going to go down in history as the greatest sound effects ever created, that's an easy 5 stars in Humor right there. I think this has a future as the next big troll platformer (but actually super enjoyable unlike Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels from the NES).

Also, you made a game! For doing that and not giving up under all of that pressure (and trust me, I get it, expect me to ramble on about it in a few sentences) that already makes you a winner, as cheesy and kids-cartoony as it sounds. The Compo is pure stress, making it through 48 hours of struggling to make a game is no easy feat. I completely get what you said about the stress of worrying about whether or not you'd make it, on Day 1 (or 2, Central Time makes Ludum Dare weird) I was already panicking about finishing. I had to scratch the majority of the features I had planned for my game to make way for actually finishing, I was stressing out and giving myself a headache, that was a pain because I didn't have the sense to go do something smart like take an ibuprofen pill. I literally had to write the story in 15 minutes, I was shaking with both adrenaline and anxiety about not finishing the most important part of the game in time. The most annoying part about scratching features in my game is I didn't have time to implement a basic radio that would play a chiptune cover of a rickroll.

So, moral of the story: the Compo is hard, you did amazing, your "Boing" sound effects define audio perfection, and next Ludum Dare everyone's going to be killing each other trying to get you to be their artist.

Path of the Pogo by Human Writes Code 2021-10-04T15:07:57Z

Me: "Ha, this won't be so bad! I've unlocked every level of Celeste, one of *the* most brutal games ever created, and I can beat some of the hardest levels without dying!"

Also me: proceeds to take about 9 minutes getting the first two collectibles, and then immediately makes a beeline for the first thing in the level that can kill you, and learns that collectibles are not saved when you die.

Oh, and can't forget how for several tries I kept attempting to use the arrow keys even though I had read the controls on the Itch page and Ludum Dare site. After playing so many games where it says "Use WASD" and it secretly has arrow keys support, I tend to try arrow keys in games. Yes, I'm that dumb.

Alright, now that that's out of the way, go stick the music on Spotify, I want it on my playlist. 👍

Il Bambino by gamebuilder 2021-10-04T22:36:12Z

Once again, another beautifully crafted entry! I love the addition of spellcasting and mana collecting, that really boosts the magical mood. I'm glad to see that it's not one of those games where there's one overused power and a bunch of useless powers that do basically nothing, you really struck the perfect balance between all of the powers. It just wouldn't be Ludum Dare without getting to play one of these games, it's always a highlight of the Play + Rate for me!

Strong and Stable by natpat 2021-10-04T18:52:50Z

Whew, that was tough.... took my dumb brain forever to realize that the best attack was reflecting the stars back.

Screenshot 2021-10-04 135028.png

Spent most of that battle at a 1/2 heart, I completely cheesed it by going to the *veeeeery* right of the screen during the money attack. Might want to fix that. 😅

Unstables by joonamo 2021-10-16T16:05:09Z

I will be back for you, leaderboard.... mark my words, somehow one day PeaceOfCake will take 10th spot....

I think this game demonstrates why I don't ride horses: no one would ever let me grab medals with my butt while hanging on to the horse's thigh with one hand. 😆 This is pure entertainment right here.

Should I Buy It ? by henriquecanella 2021-10-04T21:24:26Z

Perfectly balanced.... Managed to get 10 of everything, it was practically raining money!

This is probably the most enjoyable clicker game I've ever played. It's straightforward, it teaches you things through trial and error instead of a lengthy tutorial, and the news actually helps (sometimes)!

By the way, winter is coming. Wait, never mind, it's not coming. Just kidding, it is. Winter ends and immediately it's winter again. Just kidding none of the winters ever happened. 🤣 Best season cycle ever.

Giant Horse Deathball by fakefirefly 2021-10-04T04:07:33Z

YES, YES, KILL THE HUMANS, MY ANIMAL COMPANIONS!

The audio is *so good*! The physics are definitely hard to get used to at first, but eventually I figured out it was useful for hitting multiple buildings (or fences) at once.

Escaped Plague by Federico Giorgi 2021-10-21T05:56:15Z

Controller support is always appreciated. 👍

This is one of those incredibly rare Ludum Dare games where it already feels like a fully-released game! The innovative gameplay, beautiful framerates, amazing art (though really, what else could I expect?), and overall polish and detail in the game all feel like more than just a Ludum Dare game! Blurring the vision when you dash is a perfect and professional touch, I love it. Holding A to revive someone to prevent accidentally doing it and mashing A to regain sanity really bring some nice variety to the gameplay, too bad I'm using a backup PC controller and not one of my "ideal for button mashing" ones. Having the characters and enemies be billboards so you could have perfectly-drawn 2D characters in a 3D environment was a good idea, it really brings attention to the 2D graphics. Also, you seriously had the time to implement changing light and weather? Consider me impressed, all I can do with Unity is crash the editor, though I expect every Unity developer has dealt with an engine crash at one point or another. In my experience Unity is a pretty **unstable** game engine. 😉

Sadly, there is a bug report.... in Wave 2, close to Wave 3 I presume by the lack of enemies, I was guarding the last living villager and she committed suicide or something. I had been recently released from insanity and no enemies were on-screen, so no one was attacking any villagers, and the game just.... ended. Version 1.0.0 was used, though judging by the changelog I suspect the same thing would have happened in v1.0.1.

Escaped Plague by Federico Giorgi 2021-10-21T15:52:58Z

@federico-giorgi Sounds exciting! Looking forward to it. 👍

Now why would I *not* enjoy a Ludum Dare game with some well-animated violence and gore? 😏

I swear, that baby is a real demon. No? Don't think it's a demon? Think again, as a LITERAL DEMON teleports away from me with 3% happiness left when I'm LITERALLY a SECOND away from saving the game. Moments that drive me insane like this is why I absolutely love this crazy game.

I decided to try the right arrow since I had already figured out what the left arrow did, that was my undoing!

It's a cute and enjoyable little game! I love the sun, I feel like the sun has the most accurate reaction to the scene down below it.

Unstable Robot Soccer by Ausstein 2021-10-04T20:05:09Z

I don't know if I have ever seen a Ludum Dare game this deserving of a post-jam version. I'm talking local multiplayer, online multiplayer, Nintendo Switch, Microsoft Xbox One/Series X|S, Sony PS4/PS5, Android (iOS is too much of a weakling for this)! This is the future of sports, imagine if sports were actually this interesting. This is the first all-5-stars rating I've done this jam! You did not disappoint, @ausstein .

Simply Blocks by kuviman 2021-10-03T16:43:33Z

I think the MMO has developed beyond just playing Jenga.... 😄 People were building houses, building arches, accidentally wrecking things, and then I built a house. Didn't get to finish a roof because the game refused to let me make/destroy blocks once everyone else left.

Screenshot 2021-10-03 113248.png

Screenshot 2021-10-03 113234.png

I actually managed to balance a roof!

I love how LMB creates and RMB destroys, since the controls seem to be suggesting creation is better than destruction. It's the opposite of Minecraft, where the game seems to be encouraging you to destroy blocks and kill creatures.

Simply Blocks by kuviman 2021-10-03T19:12:40Z

Ah, thanks for clarifying @kuviman . I'll have to play again later to finish the house this time!

Kei26 - Union Game Engine by Fupi 2021-10-08T22:32:15Z

Constant crashes, bad collisions, and annoying popups.... yeah, this feels like Unity all right.

Certainly an innovative game! I love seeing all of the tutorial ripoffs, it feels just like when I started making games and spent ~10 months making ripoffs of engine tutorials and existing games.

Kei26 - Union Game Engine by Fupi 2021-10-08T22:34:10Z

Oh, and....

> Also I didn’t put in anything for popping all the enemies cus I didn’t think anyone would actually bother lmao, maybe I should have.

😏

Kei26 - Union Game Engine by Fupi 2021-10-09T00:01:30Z

@fupi Hitting a block at the right angle (corner of box touches corner of block) lets you slightly climb up, I managed to save myself from death like that one time, but died immediately afterwards so I don't think it mattered. 😅 The slime-looking enemies also had some rather square-shaped collisions for such non-rectangular enemies, and there were a few other random misc things. All in all I think it contributes to the feel of ~~Unity's~~ Union's lack of stability though, I could tell from the loading bar that this is a Godot game and I don't blame you for using Godot over Unity.

Vomit Up the World by ItsHornUnicorn 2021-10-16T15:43:10Z

Never before has feeling like this been so entertaining.... 🤢 I *love* the low-poly art on the gems and some of the décor, and the smooth sculpted graphics on everything else! The art blends really well together, the environment is beautiful. My only request would be to make it so that if you run into the galaxy at the end you cause an explosion that blows up the universe. 😈

@brainloaf-studio After this and Sporelunk, plus Office Dating Sim and CONSUME, it's pretty easy to tell you guys specialize in out-of-the-box hilariously weird games. 😄 The ending to this was just so bizarre and really ended this unstable chaos right. Looking forward to hopefully seeing you at Ludum Dare's 20th Anniversary!

History Towers by retrome 2021-10-16T15:57:24Z

Thank goodness for friction.... 😅

What a nice and polished game! The feeling of the buildings popping into place is very satisfying, and all of the little graphical touches you added really bring it all together. I like how the characters flying in not only improved the feel of the game, but also due to them being 2D compared to the game elements' 3D, they weren't distracting and annoying, and added to the environment whilst building the buildings.

Warhead Stroll by cagibi 2021-10-03T16:38:23Z

As usual, a fantastic entry! Didn't manage to get past the butcher yet, but I'll have to come back and play it later when I can actually rate this so I'll beat the butcher then.

Once again your creation has amazing graphics in a signature recognizable style, and the humor has me smiling the whole time! Took me quite a while to figure out that there was only a bomb risk flare-up when the dog started walking, so I could walk around for a while as long as I avoided walls and such.

And.... a bug report.... At the first spot with cars I got Old Roger killed off-screen by the first car pushing him out of the area, and the game completely froze up when it restarted the area. Thankfully it only takes about half a minute to get back there, so it wasn't ragequit frustrating or anything.

Warhead Stroll by cagibi 2021-10-04T01:20:22Z

Whew, I think playing the Ace Of Rope Compo version Death battle five times over is easier than this.... guess I've found my new traditional binge-gamed Ludum Dare game! I'll have to give it one last(?) go later. Here's your nice high ratings for now.

Competitive Skyscraper Construction Simulator 2021 by Nick Barrash 2021-10-03T23:17:10Z

Chill beats, fitting SFX, and a valid reason to fail five seconds into a game? Yes please! Bonus points for the leaderboard, I can't resist a game with a leaderboard.

I see now why it says not to let blocks with the same color touch.... I did it because my stack was going nowhere (that was before I decided to go for height) and I learned why you shouldn't do it the hard way. The fact that the blocks change color is a genius touch, it really destabilizes things when a block slips!

U-49 Meltdown by Blue Pin Studio 2021-10-04T22:47:48Z

This game is genius.

Deathrail by Hotowlgirls 2021-10-08T17:50:40Z

Pretty polished! Remappable controls would be greatly appreciated though, having one hand on six buttons gets a bit harder than separate balancing/moving controls. I'd recommend something along the lines of the classic Arrows/Z/X setup.

Bob's Underworld by chesschaser 2021-10-04T16:32:38Z

Same bug as @mateu , died at 81m and no restart button appeared.

The pixel art is really cute! It was extremely hard to get off of the starting platform though, I had to jump at the last possible second before death by lava and there was only about a 50/50 chance of making it to the beginning of the generated platforms. Also, at my 81m death, I think the game got bugged out? The only available platforms were offscreen so I couldn't jump on them, and an enemy went off-screen and didn't come back.

Might have to keep doing this a little later, I can never resist the chance for a high score. 😄

Unstable Avoidance! by MrchickenBoy 2021-10-09T04:48:15Z

You seriously made a game this polished and *juicy* in one Compo when you've never used Unity? Consider me impressed! All I've ever managed to accomplish in Unity is crash the editor (though that's such an extremely typical thing to happen to the point where I played a game about Unity's instability). My only complaint about the game is that it's too short, this game has too much potential to not have a post-Compo update!

Thank you so much for playing, @smilewood ! How they manage to sleep is a very valid question, it's possible that in 200 years there's a type of coffee that can give the body enough energy to not need to sleep? Leaving unintentional plot holes in sci-fi stories is always fun, I wonder what Earth is like in 200 years.

....To the Ends of the World and Back by Peace Of Cake Games 2021-10-04T23:56:21Z

Thanks for playing, everyone! My apologies about such a late reply comment, notifications have been really bad for the past day or so.

First things first: **regarding the confusion about disappearing mouse pointers, that is completely normal!** It's the mouse locking typically used in shooter games and Minecraft, I decided to use it for something out-of-the-box and use mouse locking to simulate moving around the cockpit. Your browser should have said something about "Press ESC to unlock cursor" or something like that, if it didn't I don't know what's up with the browser.

Thank you for the appreciation, @cagibi ! I'm amazed people are actually enjoying the story, I typed the whole thing in about 15 minutes as the Compo was ending.

I definitely agree that visual novels with actual gameplay is something that really needs to have its potential more recognized, @remco ! I always think of [one of my favorite LD48 games](https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/48/a-taste-of-the-past) as a nice example of it. This game is definitely more of a tech demo as you said, it's also more of a demo in general than a complete game. There's no way I could have pulled off this project in a *week*, so the TtEotWaB that you know is somewhat of a demo, with a short playtime and a mere fraction of a story. This won't be the last the world will see of Grace and Andrew!

Thank you for playing, @chesschaser !

@mateu The cursor disappearing is normal, as explained above, but I'm not sure why it wouldn't let you do some of the hazard tasks. During testing everything worked normally, and it should still work even though last time I played TtEotWaB was about halfway through development since I didn't change any of the code regarding task management and scrolling. If you could make a Bug Report on the project's GitHub with your OS, browser, details of the bugs, etc that would be really helpful.

Your idea of voice acting is something I would definitely love to have in the full version, and hopefully in a Ludum Dare game one day! I have a somewhat deep voice though, and it doesn't pair well with microphones (especially my iPhone 6s' crappy one). I don't exactly see myself being able to voice Grace well, due to being AMAB I can't do female voices very well.

....To the Ends of the World and Back by Peace Of Cake Games 2021-10-05T00:01:26Z

@alec Sounds like I might have screwed something up without realizing it.... I'll take a look at the source again tonight and see if I can find out what's up with the cursor bugs, the cursor should only disappear when hazard tasks aren't being done. A GitHub issue report would be greatly appreciated. 👍 Also, I'm glad you like the hyperspeed effect! I was worried it might have issues, it was quite buggy during early development and slowed my laptop down (no small feat for a Construct 3 game).

Thank you for playing, @theseusinabottle ! The post-Compo version (might be so post-Compo it becomes a full commercial release) will be sure to extend the story some, it's quite short and hastily written.

....To the Ends of the World and Back by Peace Of Cake Games 2021-10-05T01:00:59Z

@mateu Just played my own game for the first time since the halfway point of development (the GitHub is filling up with issues, sarcastic cheers), on newest Windows 10/newest Chrome/fullscreen HTML5 build the mouse seemed to work fine, but there have been some noticeable performance issues (hence the respective GitHub issue). I'll have to make native desktop builds later for anyone else experiencing issues.

....To the Ends of the World and Back by Peace Of Cake Games 2021-10-05T01:19:14Z

@mateu I suspect that browser lagging might have caused glitches in the mouse lock and was responsible for issues you had with the mouse, I'll have to do a full debug inspection later. The project is quite messy right now and full of bugs, it's going to take quite a while to fix all of them but I'll do it extremely soon.

....To the Ends of the World and Back by Peace Of Cake Games 2021-10-05T02:34:16Z

Thanks for trying, @shreemp ! What browser were you using? I suspect browsers that aren't modern Chromium with WebGL 2.0 support (looking at you, Safari) might have issues with the mouse lock, I'll have to dust off the old Mac and test it.

....To the Ends of the World and Back by Peace Of Cake Games 2021-10-05T04:48:10Z

@remco @mateu @alec @shreemp

Hey everyone! v1.1.2 has been released on Itch, if anyone would like to try the game again the mouse issues and misc bugs should all be patched now. Nothing has changed content-wise, it's all bug fixes so hopefully the bugs that don't let you win should be all gone. For best results I would recommend using a modern Chromium browser (Chrome, Edge) since it would seem that any other browser could impact performance and cause those bugs. There are also desktop builds of the unpatched and patched versions if you think poor HTML5 performance could be an issue.

....To the Ends of the World and Back by Peace Of Cake Games 2021-10-05T14:45:32Z

Wow, so many great comments! Thanks for playing everyone, looks like I've got more games to play now since ratings received has exceeded ratings given. Hey look, TtEotWaB hit 20 ratings! 🥳

@human-writes-code It's actually kind of a mystery how long it would take to go the ends of the universe and back since the speed of hyperspeed is undefined! I like to think that hyperspeed is exponentially greater than the speed of light (which isn't how physics work but who cares, this is just under 200 years in the future, things are clearly more advanced).

I definitely agree that there should have been something to do, originally the dialogue wasn't going to pass so quickly and you would be able to listen to music (a chiptune cover of Rick Astley's Never Gonna Give You Up of course, I'm a total troll) and you could doodle around on a little holographic sketchpad popup. The source code actually still has an empty layer for the sketchpad popup and the code is designed to work with it if I had had time to implement it!

@wouter52 Thank you for all of those great suggestions! Talking definitely wasn't going to be automatically done, and your suggestion of Andrew getting annoyed if you don't respond soon is a good addition!

I know the official description of the game is "like Among Us meets visual novels" but still, glad to see someone who gets the Among Us references. 👍 Innersloth actually participated in Ludum Dare in LD41, I took a look at the LD page and it's hilarious seeing their comments talk about how they're in the middle of a space game when no one knew it would get so big! The plot is also a nod to the beginning of one of the levels in the game Celeste where instead of hardcore gaming you have the characters talk about their personal issues. There are noticeable differences there though, like instead of the female character talking about anxiety and depression it's the male character, they're in space instead of on a mountain, and the female character is gay instead of trans.

@gamebuilder As always, a major thanks for playing! Always good to get game tips from you. Glad you get the feel of the holographic displays, adding scan lines and pixel text (I hate that thing's character spacing but the Construct Team won't fix it) was a decision I'm glad I made since it's visually better than the MS Sans Serif and a plain green background. I definitely went with a very Ludum Dare 41 (Combine 2 Incompatible Genres) approach, eh?

I'll definitely have to consider keyboard input in the post-Compo release, that would make the keypad easier. I went with a mouse-only gameplay (plus spacebar to pause but that was mostly a dev shortcut and for the streamers) since the Construct 3 betas introduced the mouse locking like in 3D shooter games, and I wanted to try something innovative with the function typically used strictly outside of 3D games. In hindsight that was a bad idea since the lower-end browsers such as Firefox and the super low-power browsers such as Safari can't handle mouse locking well.

@masaru Yes, a hug for all the Andrews! I'm sad I didn't get to develop the character of Andrew more, he's got potential. I'll be talking about him in either the next devlog or the one after that.

Thanks so much for the detailed bug report! I just took a look at the source code and your bug sounds right, turns out that sadly absolutely *no one* has managed to win the game. The game doesn't bring you to the good ending when you win, and the bad ending didn't have its script associated with it so it just sat there at a black screen. Guess it's a good thing rankings are useless as far as I'm concerned, I probably bombed my own rankings by making such amateurish bugs. 😅

@queenofsquiggles You've been affected by the same bug as every other player! Turns out some code was missing and it was impossible to win, I'll have a patch rolled out ASAP. Thanks for trying it out and making it to what is technically the good ending of the game!

....To the Ends of the World and Back by Peace Of Cake Games 2021-10-05T15:15:54Z

Hello everyone! Thank you all for playing and helping out with the bug investigation.

Long story short: my game this time around is *extremely buggy*. Thanks to all of you playing I've managed to patch the bug that prevented the player from winning or losing. If anyone would like to try the game now that you can actually access the endings, it's live on Itch! No content changes have been made since the end of the Compo, only bug fixes.

Please note that Firefox and Safari being broken is an unfixable bug, if you use one of these browsers I recommend downloading your respective desktop builds. Edge and Chrome seem to work best, they always manage to run my games correctly. Chrome has been confirmed as almost always working correctly.

Thanks @kr4ft3r , happy to hear such praise from someone who made such a genius game! Going way out of my comfort zones is always the fun of Ludum Dare, though next time I'll probably go back to my roots of an action game developer. All of my submissions this year have been story-based (walking simulator with story and "visual novel thing", as Itch has been instructed to call it), it'll be nice to make an actual "game" game next Ludum Dare.

Looking forward to seeing you at the 20th anniversary of this fantastic event!

(Also, I like the nickname Cake.... finally someone got my dev name a nickname!)

....To the Ends of the World and Back by Peace Of Cake Games 2021-10-05T17:46:31Z

@kr4ft3r Oh yes, it's probably going to be hard to make an action game next time! Ludum Dare is always a great time to have fellow writers leave feedback about my hastily-written stories (I really ought to make a team next time and put myself in charge of audio and writing, doing that and the art and the programming is tough), so I've developed a tendency to make story games. Maybe LD50's theme will finally be something action game-inspiring! As much as I hated One Tool, Many Uses at least that would have motivated me to make an action game, most likely about serial killers.

And now I'm getting an urge to go play The Fall Of Alice for some reason since that was such a bizarre masterpiece....

Thanks for checking out this little project, @vphyre ! I'm doing great, playing your game really made my ~~day~~ night last night! Hopefully post-Compo I'll finally whip out *the dark arts of shader effects* and improve the graphics of TtEotWaB. Sounds could use some work too, I wasted around half an hour getting that ambient noise working since I took advantage of my phone's microphone's crappiness to make a distorted recording of a fan.

....To the Ends of the World and Back by Peace Of Cake Games 2021-10-06T00:16:01Z

Thanks for playing and the great suggestions, @kantanloop ! Making the dialogue actually do something is definitely what I'd like to do when I remake this project one day, your suggestions could definitely help. Originally when a message from Andrew was received there would be a notification popup at the bottom of the screen similar to the notifications of the Xbox operating system, but that was one of the *many* things that got scrapped due to the Compo. I don't know about refusing Andrew though, I stuck a little bit of myself in him in the way that he's rather stubborn. 😏 Branching dialogues could be interesting if there are extremely increased amounts of hazards, depending on the story line different paths could mean different hazards.

You're welcome, @rufson ! Thank you for playing!

....To the Ends of the World and Back by Peace Of Cake Games 2021-10-06T00:56:46Z

Why thank you, @aderpychickenstudios ! I would definitely recommend checking out some more Ludum Dare visual novels, there are a lot of better and more traditional visual novels made for Ludum Dare. VNs made for Ludum Dare always seem to test the limits of what a visual novel really is, interestingly most people use engines like Unity and Construct to make visual novels for Ludum Dare instead of using a "visual novel engine".

Thanks for playing, @sakura-magika ! Steering definitely could be improved, but it was kind of the quick and easy (yet frequent and reduced countdown) hazard so I couldn't think of anything that wouldn't be a rip-off of Among Us' Fix Steering task on the Airship map.

👍 Glad someone noted and liked that! The game just wouldn't be the same in my opinion if Grace wasn't an LGBT character.

Thanks a ton for playing, @blue-pin-studio ! It sure is a good thing global warming got eliminated, though the fact it took around 200 years doesn't bode well for the next 150 years or so. 😬 Text updates are definitely first on the list of things that could be improved post-Compo, right now it's too automatic. Seems to always be a problem with my story-based Ludum Dare submissions.... I'm hoping LD50 is going to have a theme that'll finally motivate me to do something I actually know how to do: action games.

I'm sure you've probably noticed that the center of the dashboard is pretty empty? Originally I was going to add useless little things you could do while the story progressed, like a holographic doodle board (I got so close to implementing it its basic code is in the source file but it does nothing) and a little radio that could play a few catchy chiptune musics since I specialize in those, and of course a chiptune cover of Rick Astley's Never Gonna Give You Up. I'm such a troll. 😏

....To the Ends of the World and Back by Peace Of Cake Games 2021-10-06T18:30:10Z

Thanks for playing @ausstein ! I do wish that font was better, I finally had the sense to stop wasting time every Ludum Dare making a font (I'm very slow at it) and instead used Construct 3's built-in pixel font. The spacing on that thing is horrendous, and the Construct Team hasn't done anything about it despite making that font actually good has been requested for quite some time.

Quick tip: if you need more time to read the text hold Space, the game time stops running when you do that! Even for someone who can only speak and read English it's hard for me to read the font at times, so the pause button was designed for that. Hazard timers won't run when the pause is activated, since the keypad uses a deltatime-affected timer plugin and the steering countdown is actually this big JavaScript expression blob:

random crap.png

Heh, I remember when I first made the keypad system and the only way to figure out what the code was was trial and error, instead of saying a code it displayed "\_23\_" or something like that. When you press on the keypad to open up the overlay to enter the code it should say the access code on the keypad's screen.

Thank you too for playing, @robonaut121 ! That's some amazing luck with the keypad, I never managed to get anything but random numbers. Each number has the same chances, so that really is some good RNG! (Maybe in the full version that'll be made one day I'll add a teeny chance of an easter egg code....) The story definitely needs some more interactivity, but I still haven't learned my lesson that I *cannot* make a fully finished and polished story-based game in two days. 😓

....To the Ends of the World and Back by Peace Of Cake Games 2021-10-07T05:22:56Z

Looking forward to playing both of your games, @ronanrory @brainloaf-studio !

I'd consider that some pretty darn useful feedback, @ronanrory ! (Spelled that as "foodback" the first time, guess my gluttonous stomach wants more dessert 😆) Feedback from non-VN players is just as valuable as feedback from VN players. I'm glad you like the 2.5D graphics, I spent a bit of time having to bugfix those! The light beams were quite performance-heavy at first, and this Dell of mine has decent power to it, so I'm glad making the game "potato computer"-friendly paid off and I got some praise from you as a bonus.

Whenever I get around to making a full version of this (two conditions: teach myself the art of 3D cutscenes and figure out how the heck people are seriously able to do digital art so well) there'll definitely have to be more hazards. The keypad is the only "proper" hazard right now since I couldn't think of any sort of mini-game for the steering that wouldn't be a rip-off of Among Us' steering task (adjust speed, fix wheel, and if you want to play around honk the horn like crazy for no good reason at all). Once I stop being such a slacker and write up the second devlog I'll talk about original ideas for that empty space on the dashboard, long story short you could originally doodle around while getting rickrolled.

And yeah, 15 minute speed-typing.... I was shaking with adrenaline (and possibly caffeine but I don't even remember what I ate that day) as I copy-and-pasted the script fragments to make the dialogue work. In hindsight it's a bit rushed-sounding when you know it was made in about 15 minutes, maybe one day I'll have the sense to join a team as the writer and audio producer since I can actually do those well (looking at you, poor digital art abilities) instead of forcing myself to go mentally insane doing the work of 4+ theoretical team members in an entire less day. Thankfully sharpening my skills has become quite useful, I made things easier on myself by making it so that the dialogue is actually a two-parameter function that just copies the "sender" and "message contents" to the chat box.

@brainloaf-studio Whoops, sorry about the blinding stars! That's the one bug I haven't figured out how to efficiently fix yet, since the stars are randomly generated and trying to delete any stars that could align with the camera would probably delete almost every star what with the camera moving in 2.5D. It's actually a fully 2D camera (despite me having added the 3D Camera plugin to the project) with some parallax layering and the stars are shoved back on the Z axis.

Right before the deadline I actually was going to reduce the timers (15s steering and 30s keypad I think?), the keypad would be easy since it uses a deltatime-affected timer plugin that makes it so that all I would have to do is change its time parameter. Changing the steering wasn't something I would have managed to do before the deadline though, since once the steering hits an angle of -30 or 30 degrees (hence the 30s timer) it triggers the lose condition. The timer for the steering is all mathematically calculated by a triple-expressioned line of JavaScript comparing the absolute value of the angle and the difference between 0 degrees and the current angle and all of that boring stuff.... 😴 Heck, I might even add difficulty levels for casual versus actually stressful playing! Never seen a half-visual novel game with difficulty levels before.

It's nice how you've watched as my Ludum Dare entries get progressively less and less crappy, maybe next Ludum Dare I'll finally be able to make something fully polished and complete. I'm no good at making story-based games in a mere 2 days due to my background as an action game developer, and my first Ludum Dare game is somewhat dead to me, so I'm hoping that next Ludum Dare the theme will finally motivate me to make what I make best: some sort of action game.

I've never heard of the Wangan series! It definitely looks like an extremely fun game, as far as I'm concerned modern graphics were reached in 1996 with the Nintendo 64, so a game with a nice modern-retro vibe like that definitely speaks to me. After last Ludum Dare I knew I didn't want to do a cutscene for this Ludum Dare, though I did briefly consider setting up the entire environment in 3D and using full 3D instead of 2.5D visual effects. It would seem that as of last Ludum Dare it's become a tradition for me to try using brand-new experimental features in the Construct 3 engine during Ludum Dare, last Ludum Dare I tried the new 3D objects and this Ludum Dare I used the mouse locking, a classic in the 3D PC games field.

Looking forward to playing your entry, it looks like I'll be giving it a high Innovation score. 👍

....To the Ends of the World and Back by Peace Of Cake Games 2021-10-07T20:42:41Z

Thanks for such great positive feedback, @byyiro ! More hazards is definitely one thing to work on, to the point where the full version might have a full 3D environment you have to walk around to get to different hazards.

Fingers crossed that the theme for the 20th anniversary finally encourages me to make an action game! 🤞 2021 has been the year of story-based Ludum Dare games for me apparently, hoping to get back into my comfort zone (but not too far in, because that wouldn't be fun, now would it?) for LD50.

....To the Ends of the World and Back by Peace Of Cake Games 2021-10-08T04:28:36Z

Thanks for playing, @coleslaughter ! Exactly how long it would take to fly to the ends of the universe is definitely questionable seeing as it's unspecified how fast hyperspeed is. My guess is hyperspeed is probably exponentially greater than the speed of light, but who knows, and who cares about realism in physics? I made a game 200 years in the future and you made a game about a table doing tricks like a skateboarder, the **stability** of physics is being tested here.

....To the Ends of the World and Back by Peace Of Cake Games 2021-10-09T01:00:13Z

@mhorth Definitely going to reposition and redesign how the messaging works! Originally it was going to be a screen on the dashboard like the keypad, and in order to advance the story you had to check it regularly and message back by pressing a button, but Compo time restrictions and all that made things different.

I don't know how one would go about doing this in Unity (all I've ever done is Unity is generate errors and crash the engine), but in Construct 3 I used function calling with a "Sender" parameter and a "Text" parameter, and the game just ran an overly long amount of code that would send periodic messages at a fixed rate. When the messaging function was called it would append the text that made up the messaging chat with the Sender, a : character and a space, and then the Text. Pretty straightforward. Everything else is pretty basic too: the camera is at Z 100, light beams are spawned at Z -100 and move forwards, the keypad just shows a hidden 2D layer and when generating a code it randomly assigns four code values a number, the player has to press the matching number according to the index of where they are in the code, etc. I know the scrolling would be effortless to make in Unity, it's the classic mouse lock used for looking around in PC shooter games and Minecraft and such, except I used it for an innovative 2D scroll by only registering X-axis mouse movement.

....To the Ends of the World and Back by Peace Of Cake Games 2021-10-09T17:49:37Z

Glad you like it, @fupi ! I'll be sure to let the fan know that it has been appreciated. 😜

I'll definitely see about adding a mouse sensitivity config. During development I had tested it with both my laptop's touchpad and a mouse, and I didn't get around to making adjustable sensitivity since it felt fine for me (but then again, I'm the person who made it, should have gotten some playtesters to test the scrolling) but I knew mouse sensitivity was something I should have done.

....To the Ends of the World and Back by Peace Of Cake Games 2021-10-09T20:27:51Z

Thanks for playing, @matias-correa ! I'm assuming you downloaded the original Compo version? In the original version (and v1.1.2) it was impossible to win the game and the screen would just turn white for whatever reason, I recommend playing the HTML5 or v1.1.3 version so that it'll be bug-free. I haven't changed a single thing in the game in the updated versions so no need to worry about being tricked into playing a better post-Compo version, it's all bug fixes and absolutely no new content.

....To the Ends of the World and Back by Peace Of Cake Games 2021-10-11T15:50:04Z

Scrolling through the messages while the game is paused, why didn't I think of that? Fantastic idea, @papabirb ! You're definitely right about making the character's text different colors too, like in Celeste:

Screenshot 2021-10-11 094916.png

Glad you liked the fan's background ambience! The warning sound was intended to sound "a little annoying yet cute sirens in a way?", play too much Among Us and the warning sound will haunt you forever, so I went with something a little less.... ear killing. 😅

Ahhhh I'm glad so many people are enjoying the stars! They're fully rendered in 3D despite the rest of the project rendering in 2D, the game creates them every 0.1 seconds or so. The camera is at Z elevation 100, the game elements at Z elevation 0, and the stars are created at Z elevation -100. Each tick the stars create their aftereffect and step up one Z elevation, meaning the better the framerate the better it looks (couldn't find an efficient way to deltatime it and make it flawless at any framerate). Took quite a while to tweak the stars so that they would appear more or less centered no matter where you are, since 3D rendering and 2D rendering don't always mix quite right.

Yeah, gameplay isn't much since I put little focus on gameplay and it's more about the story (which is hilarious, because I spent almost the whole Compo making the scrolling around and keypad work and I typed up the entire story and implemented it in the last 15 minutes of the Compo). Post-Compo, whenever I get around to it whether it be a few days or a few years, there'll be more hazards to fix and lower countdowns for them (something I tried to implement initially but due to the way the steering is made it would have been too time-consuming).

Glad you liked it! Thanks a lot for playing! 😄

....To the Ends of the World and Back by Peace Of Cake Games 2021-10-12T14:50:10Z

Thank you for playing, @pbg ! It definitely is on the simple side, the Compo is no joke and in Ludum Dare doing anything other than my minimalistic handdrawn graphics is a real time-killer (I like 'em though). Glad to hear that the Web version worked good for you! I'll probably have to add a little tutorial screen on how the mouse works post-Compo, seems like mouse lock in a 2D game was quite unexpected for most people.

....To the Ends of the World and Back by Peace Of Cake Games 2021-10-13T23:44:19Z

@nyxkn What browser were you using? I thought I got all of those pesky mouse lock bugs gone.... Seems like the main bug creators and Firefox and Safari (not surprised at all about Safari), Chrome and Edge seem to almost always work right.

....To the Ends of the World and Back by Peace Of Cake Games 2021-10-17T14:08:30Z

Thanks for playing, @retrome ! Sorry about the confusion about the cursor, that was poor mechanic implementation on my part. 😅

....To the Ends of the World and Back by Peace Of Cake Games 2021-10-17T16:54:23Z

Thank you, @kakapoy ! The Compo sure is no joke, two days certainly flies by....

....To the Ends of the World and Back by Peace Of Cake Games 2021-10-18T06:28:38Z

Thanks a lot for playing, @togis ! Sorry about the crappy font, fixing its spacing and sizing has been a long-requested Construct 3 feature/bug fix and the Construct Team hasn't done anything about it. 😣 I'll be sure to stop using the SpriteFont plugin for fonts and just use a nice Sans Serif font for *everything* next Ludum Dare, admittedly I don't like that font either but the engine lacked a good built-in pixel font.

....To the Ends of the World and Back by Peace Of Cake Games 2021-11-04T04:04:14Z

Thanks for playing, @sinci1 ! It's always neat to see other Ludum Dare users who still play games and leave feedback on them after the deadline.

The story definitely needs some depth and a proper ending, if I had done the Jam I most likely would have done a full 3D environment and cutscenes and all that but the Compo sure is harsh. I'm hoping to come back to this project one day soon, it certainly has the potential for a full game (seems to be an October tradition of mine) but I'm waiting until I've managed to improve my graphical abilities (though I wouldn't recommend judging them by my Ludum Dare games, my art looks like crap compared to what I can do without deadlines).

Boat History by etrealjunior 2021-10-06T03:08:01Z

Note to self: come back to this when I have my mouse. Touchpads are for portability, not gaming.

This is breathtaking so far! Definitely interested to know how you made such beautiful water physics, I remember playing around with water physics a few years back (was not very experienced then....) and it took hours just to make a few objects poorly float. Not only are your water physics perfect, it's visually stunning too.

Unstable government by DmitryGalias 2021-10-11T16:37:19Z

Whew, this isn't easy with a laptop touchpad.... but I made it first try with over $500! It's definitely rough how the only way to figure out to read the newspaper is when the policeman fines you for the only things that *aren't* banned. It's interesting how the newspaper doesn't pause the game like when other popups appear, the policeman almost came while I was struggling to press the X button to close the newspaper.

These are some amazing graphics! Really good job on 'em, this looks really polished. My only criticism would be that it took me *forever* to figure out how to toggle the flag, it doesn't pop up like the farms do when you hover over it. I thought you have to click the flagpole or something, eventually I got it though.

Cultist aboard ! by Guilloteam 2021-10-21T05:14:17Z

Mwahaha! You fools didn't see it coming, and now you are all sacrifices to the great deity Dagon! 😈

But seriously, this game is great. The art is beautifully drawn, it really creates the ideal mood! Playing Among Us seems to have sharpened my skills a bit too much though, on my first playthrough of the game I won and it was actually really hard for me to lose to see the other endings. I love these sort of infiltration games, really tests your decision-making skills and intuition.

Plip-plop! Unstable Conditions of Care by sakura_magika 2021-10-04T21:47:45Z

Gosh, this is chaotic.... those Plip-Plops really enjoy making me spam buttons!

This game is adorable! The art fits the mood quite nicely, and the difficulty curve is perfect.

CATACLYSM by his-games 2021-10-09T16:43:36Z

It certainly has potential! I love the idea of the game getting harder the longer you stall, and the shading on the graphics is beautiful.

However, there are some issues that made the game extremely difficult in Level 1, and impossible in levels 2 and Boss. The falling rocks feel rushed and not fully thought out, I had to try and speedrun through a level before the 4:40 mark because there was no indication of where the falling rocks would be, and they would kill me the instant I respawned (sometimes before I had even finished respawning). In the first area where you see the robot with the laser blaster in Level 2, the game respawns you directly above the spikes so unless you hold right you get killed immediately. I also couldn't finish Level 2 after that point or do the Boss Level at all because the camera kept moving on its own and I couldn't see where I was going, and was apparently also unable to die to reset the camera.

The player's movement also felt weird, not only was it *extremely* floaty for a precision platformer and seemed to constantly randomize the speed, the jump strength also randomly cut out, the player would randomly get caught on walls and ceilings when jumping (it felt like the level was made out of Velcro), and sometimes when trying to jump against a wall it would either refuse to jump and make the player stuck in its jumping animation, or do a half-strength jump with no jump animation. The hitboxes also need work, the bats and spikes apparently had telekinetic abilities and would kill the player a full tilemap block away from them. I also noticed that upon beating Level 1, the game didn't say I beat Level 1 and immediately forced me to do Level 2 with the almost-expired timer of Level 1. It would be nice to have a "Level Complete!" screen and then transition to the next level and reset the timer, because I didn't realize I had beaten the level and starting a level with only a minute-long timer is a bit unfair. The cave also seemed to have collapsed after that with 10 seconds left on the timer still?

Overall, with improvements and bug fixes I can see this becoming quite the polished post-Jam game! The beautiful shading really brings depth and mood to the 1-bit art, a full version of this would be visually breathtaking!

Dear Ghost by Lancival 2021-10-05T05:23:23Z

....My heartstrings.... ouch, that hurt. You just yanked out all of my heartstrings and I'm completely fine with it. I'm feeling ~~a little~~ extremely emotionally touched right now....

I've been playing games about wizards, and sentient tables (by the Keyboard Cowboys of course), and Hatsune Miku with jetpacks for hair, and then I play this. This is a piece of pure emotional perfection: a beautiful story as always, spectacular music setting the mood (once of the best game atmospheres I've experienced), and fittingly adorable graphics. This thing is a total heartstring puller, I'm absolutely speechless after playing it (which is why I'm glad this is over the Internet, because when leaving comments no one can see how dumb you look when your heartstrings have been removed and you're left speechless). This thing has such an atmosphere to it, Mood shouldn't be capped out at 5 stars for this.

These games are always such a big highlight of Ludum Dare for me, it's one of the things that makes me so excited for every Ludum Dare (also the whole "Ludum Dare will bring back my motivation for gamedev" part). Every Ludum Dare I've been a part of you've always left me speechless, and this game went above and beyond. Thank you for once again giving me the chance to get extremely emotional over a several-minute game!

.

Sincerely, the random non-binary person who has expressed immense love for these games,

Peace Of Cake Games

.

Also, I did the anti-bug game plot advice on the Itch page by the way, it worked flawlessly like that. 👍

Wobbly Penguins by bqq 2021-10-09T18:04:26Z

Well that was.... unexpected. One of the best games I've played this Ludum Dare!

!> You really got me the first time the starry blob monster came for me! Here I was thinking the "not suitable for kids and easily disturbed people" warning was just a weird way of doing the photosensitivity warning, and then....

Crash by Recessive 2021-10-03T16:52:55Z

So apparently I specialize in bankruptcy. It's a great game and I'm a terrible player. 😏

Volatile by Mateu 2021-10-04T16:25:47Z

Definitely a lot of polish here! It took me a while to figure out what the shield slowdown was, when I decided to try spamming shoot I figured that one out.

Home Tripper by Lemonthunder 2021-10-13T01:20:19Z

Well, my intuition was correct, choosing "Cake" instead of "Peace Of Cake Games" for my name was a good idea. 😆

What a beautifully atmospheric game! Definitely going to have to go for more endings, I got the

!> Everything Is Resolved

or whatever it's called ending. The clock is definitely creepy, makes me glad we don't have smart appliances quite this smart yet.

!> The introduction of another human character was definitely a relief, here I was thinking I would be stuck arguing with my toothbrush about how it can seriously know what roadkill smells like for forever!

Losing the Signal by ByYiro 2021-10-07T19:38:56Z

My "Innovation" detection is going crazy with this entry! The minimalist 1-bit graphics make a perfect contrast to the game's extreme complexity, and I love the slight horror vibes the static makes. As @quite-good noted it's always exciting trying to race the static to a safe zone and making it with a split second to spare! 🏁 This is one of my favorites this Ludum Dare, it's extremely polished.

As of right now I've only gotten the

!> DEATH

ending,

!> Level 2 is a bit tricky for my dumb brain!

I'll be sure to play it more in my spare time and try to beat it, I'm a bit behind on ratings right now.... (~40 ratings received, ~25 ratings given, I don't even know where I'm getting all of these plays from because last I checked I didn't have a fan club following me or anything, not like I need/deserve one)

SNOOZLE! by wedgiebee 2021-10-21T19:56:20Z

Aww, what an adorable and fun game! The beautiful graphics remind me of claymation and children's books at the same time. The ever-evolving gameplay never got boring one bit, and had a perfect difficulty curve (meaning I never lost on the physics-based puzzles but I had to think increasingly large amounts to figure them out). The controls weren't too bad on a laptop touchpad, probably the most touchpad-friendly game aimed at mouses I've seen.

Love Stacks by TailsGameDev 2021-10-09T05:49:08Z

Very cool! The box stacking controls a lot like the Magnesis power in Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild, it's quite fun to mess around with.

> I think about making also a NSTW version xD like “hentai”, what you guys think?

I honestly think that that would be a fitting addition to the game, seems like that would be the perfect post-Jam version.

Apollo's Lab by Graylure 2021-10-17T19:38:41Z

It's not often I find one of these games where you're like "wait this is a jam game"! The graphics are amazing, I can't believe full opening and closing cutscenes, plus such detailed game animations, were made in only 3 days! I have only two complaints:

1. A list of controls, at least on the Ludum Dare page, would be nice since it took me forever to figure out the controls. WASD, Space, F, and X seems like a weird control scheme, unless that's just my QWERTY keyboard. 2. Why is this not one of the top games on Itch right now?

Twin Tails Jetpack by ExpiredPopsicle 2021-10-05T01:56:32Z

Definitely not the easiest game, the physics are very realistic. 😂 That last level is brutal, it's almost impossible to restock on stability and fuel.

The graphics for this are spot-on! I don't know if I've ever seen anything quite like this, it's quite original, Hatsune Miku with jetpacks for hair.

LD50 — Delay the inevitable

Gaia by kuro 2022-04-04T17:18:47Z

**"YOU DAMN MONKEYS! STOP BEHAVING LIKE... A BUNCH OF DAMN MONKEYS!"**

I love that. 😄

There really isn't anything to criticize in this entire game, from the backing track to the amazing graphics to the hilarious dialogue making fun of how dumb ~~humans~~ monkeys are, this is kind of a masterpiece! Well done @kuro , enjoy some 5-star rankings.

Kiwis Can't Fly by DDRKirbyISQ 2022-04-21T19:26:30Z

An absolute masterpiece in terms of every category! Everything about this is beautiful, from the serene music to the cute graphics to the simple gameplay. Enjoy some 5-star ratings, this game deserves them!

I sure am glad I used my mouse, there's no way I could move the mouse fast enough with my laptop's touchpad. 😅

STUDY LADY (cookie mix) by PeachTreeOath 2022-04-21T20:26:35Z

Played this for over 20 minutes and then realized I should probably write a comment, haha. Ah, there's nothing like the feeling of power you get in a game where it gives you thousands of in-game currency for doing nothing!

Well, I think you pretty much defined Innovation! I've never seen anything like this and I could keep playing it forever. Everything about this is polished and solid, sometime I'll have to give it another go and try to make it to the end.

Inevitable Cubes by schwede 2022-04-20T23:13:02Z

I can only imagine how frustrating it would be to play this with a laptop's touchpad instead of an actual mouse....

Screenshot 2022-04-20 180722.png

Certainly not the best score here, but I'm pretty proud of myself for making it past the two-minute mark!

What a beautiful atmosphere! The musical sound effects and calming music really improve concentration, without the peaceful music I probably would have cracked under the pressure of almost every cube being yellow but thankfully I was able to survive longer until the **inevitable** bitter end.

The theme usage is very nice, the mood is beautiful, the audio is top-notch, and visually it has a good semi-minimalistic look! Well done, and I hope you reach 20 ratings!

Aloft by ColeSlaughter 2022-04-04T23:43:43Z

I got jumpscared by the balloon popping sound several times in the last level. 😅

Wow, here I was expecting another weird and wacky game to make people laugh out loud and instead I got greeted by this masterpiece.... you guys definitely found a good background music to use in the game, the visual style plus the music plus the theme of the game in general really gives this game a very strong mood!

I never thought I'd struggle this much just to move a game object around, this might be the hardest Ludum Dare game I've ever played. That took me quite a while to get a hang of the controls!

EMBEJEAL by neowhoru 2022-04-04T23:21:25Z

Personally I don't think the climbing and wall jumping mechanics were annoying at all, as someone who has played the game Celeste the climbing felt very natural to me! The difficulty curve in the game was also very good, and I like how there was a reminder of the controls at the beginning of every level. The music was also very nice, it matched the pixel art well and wasn't too loud and wasn't obnoxious or distracting.

Turbo Toilet Tomfoolery! by RonanRory 2022-04-21T20:01:18Z

Personally I think the difficult controls match the frantic rush for the toilet perfectly, although there didn't seem to be a point in shoving the coworkers out of the way when you can just run around them.

As far as I know I've only given all-5-stars ratings to three games this Ludum Dare, and this is one of them! You nailed the Humor and Theme categories in my opinion, and the game is *very* polished for a game where you didn't even start on it for an entire day.

Good job making such a fun and polished game in such little time, even if it was a bit short!

Nanna III: A Girl and Her Bear by gamebuilder 2022-04-04T23:31:52Z

Not only did I get to play another Nanna game, it *also* had stats management, voice acting, and catchy music? These games just keep getting better and better! Well done, this was a real treat to play.

It's Cold, I Am Dead by Papabirb 2022-04-21T19:47:47Z

Well, can't say I'm anywhere near the top scores, but I still enjoyed this anyway! The music is really catchy and I love the cute graphics. I'll definitely have to play this again soon and try to get a scoreboard-worthy score!

Slime Showdown by ToC 2022-04-16T22:05:22Z

The difficulty curve is really nice, I think it took.... five tries? Looks like completely avoiding melee upgrades to get health, familiar, and ranged attack upgrades is a good strategy!

Screenshot 2022-04-16 165643.png

The pixel art is absolutely fantastic, and the gameplay is very polished! Making it so you can pause the game to buy the upgrades *and* pointing out the upgrade system once the player has enough XP to buy upgrades for the first time is really well-made. It annoys me when games try to make you juggle between staying alive and buying upgrades, being able to pause the game takes away a lot of stress and makes it exponentially harder to accidentally buy the wrong upgrade and screw your chances of winning.

Personally I didn't mind the lack of audio, with how many enemy bullets were hitting me when the boss went berserk right at the end I don't think my ears would have been able to handle that many damage sounds.... 😅

Rockagatchi by CypherDoesStuff 2022-04-05T05:51:05Z

A tomogatchi about taking care of a rock sure gets you a nice high Innovation score! 🤣 I never thought I'd have to take care of a rock like an animal.

Aside from the button spamming most minigames require making it so I missed the death screen most of the time, it's a pretty flawless game! I didn't encounter any glitches aside from a loading issue that was itch.io's fault, not the game's. I'll have to play this again sometime and see if I can make it any farther than Day 3....

Tax Mage by cagibi 2022-04-04T05:24:33Z

As usual, another well-polished entry with amazing graphics and music! The mana mechanic is really well-designed, it did a good job of making me actually make sure to aim before throwing wands at the enemies. 😅

Aside from not getting a second of invincibility after respawning during the boss fight, can't say I can think of a single complaint about anything in the entire game. Personally I really like how the drones are able to shoot through walls, it makes it so they're actually somewhat difficult to fight.

Delaying Ludum Dare by Emily Pitcher 2022-04-05T05:29:44Z

Listening to you guys debating whether Ludum Dare is "Dare" or "Dar-ay" and arguing about whether you should make a gory bunny bakery horror game makes me want to create a team next Ludum Dare just to see what weird crap we come up with. 😄

There was a *lot* of dialogue content in the game, so as I played I jotted down some notes and thoughts:

Change-My-Mind.jpg

- The particles created by the player are a beautiful touch, as is the changing background, it really adds some good graphical touches to a game otherwise mainly made from geometric shapes! - Nice plug for A Taste Of The Past haha, I still need to go play the new-and-improved full version once Ludum Dare ends.

Screenshot 2022-04-05 000333.png

- This ^^^ sounds like a great idea for a game, actually. I think I'll call it "The Story of Peace Of Cake Game's Life". - The music in this game in *insanely* good, I could listen to it for hours and still be jamming out to it! - The part where the spikes were added really made the difficulty curve have an extremely sharp increase, thankfully it wasn't too hard and didn't take too long to get past. - The actual Discord sounds really confused me haha, I thought I was actually getting Discord notifications while playing a game about a group of game developers collaborating on Discord.

Overall, this is probably the most polished entry I've played all Ludum Dare! A perfect difficulty level, good hilarious dialogue, and some nice visual novel-style elements in the ability to choose your own response in certain scenarios.

Looking forward to "Killer Rabbit Bakery: A Horror Visual Novel About Bunnies Doomed To Be Single Forever While Mining And Crafting The Heck Out Of A Valley To Kill Innocent Fish" in Ludum Dare 51, and its Netflix Original TV series shortly afterwards!

Delaying Ludum Dare by Emily Pitcher 2022-04-06T18:53:06Z

@emily-pitcher Will do!

@furano I'm proud of you for agreeing that it is Dar-ay. 😁

Terra Defensio by MrchickenBoy 2022-04-21T19:53:36Z

*Very* solid for a Compo game! The visual effects are spectacular and really match the futuristic music, which is also spectacular.

My only complaint would be that the powerup doesn't have any way to actually see how much time is left on it, I had to react fast when it suddenly ended.

OVERCOME by Peace Of Cake Games 2022-04-04T03:55:47Z

@pierce-brooks Yeah, I password-locked the page for technically no good reason, good thing I made sure to include the password up in the description above. 😅

OVERCOME by Peace Of Cake Games 2022-04-04T13:53:01Z

@cagibi @lucas-guimaraes @huntrt @rottenthunder997 Thanks for playing, everyone! And yeah, I knew the text was way too hard to read, so much that I had to put a warning at the beginning of the game. The game runs at an *extremely* low aspect ratio (216 x 120, roughly the equivalent of half the size of an NES/Famicom screen if it was at 16:9 ratio) and the Construct 3 engine doesn't support displaying text well at low aspect ratios. I've tried reducing the amount of space between characters to make it a lot easier to read, but some uppercase letters would get jumbled together, making it even harder to read.

It doesn't help that that specific text plugin does not easily support any sort of character-specific spacing like kerning, using that text object at low resolutions unfortunately always results in a good chance of it being hard to read.

And also, sorry about the extreme length of the boss fight. 😅 I accidentally set the boss to have 400 health points when 300 or 250 would have been better, on the plus side at least it means it makes getting zero damage a bit harder. Did anyone manage to finish the boss fight without getting hit a single time?

---

@lucas-guimaraes I only bothered adding a health bar for the boss itself and not the player since you can technically take unlimited damage; the boss fight is designed so you'll always win (all it can do is delay the inevitable and all that) and you can try and get a good high score for least hits taken during the fight. Originally the boss fight didn't even have that health bar for the boss, I added that in with probably about 10 minutes left in the Compo since I realized the music speeding up as the boss gets weaker wasn't as good as having an actual health bar onscreen.

@rottenthunder997 I was thinking about adding a second phase to the boss fight, but as it is now I'm surprised the only phase of the boss fight even works at all. In the middle of making its randomized attacks there was a bug where it would stop moving randomly or glitch offscreen, I completely mutilated the code and then realized after making an absolute mess that the solution could have been fixed simply by making it so the boss couldn't do the same attack type twice (which was the intended behavior anyways).

Oh, and I was completely joking about the houses being supposed to have something in them, I could never think of what I wanted in the houses that didn't give you the blaster item. It would be a shame to have a background music I spent an entire 10 minutes making go to waste so I made a bunch of empty houses and joked about how I did literally nothing with them.

@kuro Ah, you realize that this game has some autobiographical elements! The part of me fighting back against the depression and anxiety thanks you.

Thank you for playing, @lancival @nethead !

@lancival Yeah, I figured pretty much everyone would do depressing games or games you have to speedrun, the instant I saw the Theme Announcement my first thought was "uh oh, here come the depressing games". I told myself I absolutely would *not* make some death-related downer of a game.

@nethead Glad to hear some praise for the player looking towards the mouse, it took me an unnecessarily long amount of time to add because I kept typing in the angles wrong! 😅

@neowhoru What a "flawless" score! But really, since you can't lose to the depression it doesn't matter how many hits you take, the hit tracking is really just for high scores. Most of the times I tested the boss fight I got about 2 hits, I did manage to get a perfect score of 0 hits once or twice though. Perhaps in a post-Ludum Dare version I'll learn how to make online leaderboards and add a leaderboard of people's best scores against the depression boss. (I'm also considering an Android port and possibly voice acting, along with making the boss have less health and trying to improve the text font....)

Thank you for playing, and I'm glad you enjoyed the graphics! I really struggled with how I wanted the graphics to look at first, eventually I decided on that retro low-resolution black-and-white color scheme.

@ronanrory I should be able to get around to your entry tonight, can't wait for another batch of amazing sound effects! 😉

I agree that the text's spacing is pretty annoying, once I get around to making a devlog there'll be a better explanation but basically since the screen resolution is so low (half the dimensions of a 16:9 ratio Nintendo Entertainment System) the font would either be poorly spaced like that or it would be impossible to read. Personally I'm pretty annoyed at how terrible character spacing like that was my only choice with such little time to make a game. I've already begun planning for a post-Compo extended version (with bug fixes and maybe an Android port and if I'm really that bored, voice acting), hopefully I should be able to find a workaround when I've got more than 2 days to make the game.

Whoops, sounds like I forgot to fix the gun versus houses glitch. 😅 And you're correct, as the depression boss gets lower on health the music speeds up! When at full health the music is at normal speed, by the time the boss dies the music reaches double the original speed. Originally that was the only indication of the boss' health, luckily I had the sense to throw in a health bar last-minute.

@peachtreeoath I'm surprised that's the first time someone mistook the arrow at the start as a place to go to instead of indicating it told you the controls. 😅 Whenever I get around to making a post-Compo update I'll have to experiment with changing the game's resolution to try and make it so I can have some text at the start saying to hover the mouse over the tombstone, currently I still haven't gotten around to fixing the text sizing issues I've mentioned in almost every comment.

Post-Compo I definitely want to add more phases to the boss fight to make it harder even with less health instead of the boss fight just being ridiculously long. Currently the boss' only attacks are to shoot in a slightly sweeping pattern, shoot at random angles across the middle area of the area, and to send bullets straight at the player to prevent the player from just sitting in one spot; it would be neat to have the boss move up and down to force the player from camping at the top and bottom edges of the screen, and perhaps add a rare hard-to-avoid ultimate attack.

I'm glad you liked the "clawing through the darkness" bit! My original plan was to have the game constantly create little "anxiety demons" that would chase the player and perhaps shoot projectiles that would annoy the player by bouncing them back a little bit, but the Compo's low time limit and not having much time to work on the game meant I had to be lazy and reuse the anxiety walls from earlier in the game.

Anyways, thank you for playing, and the very detailed feedback!

@shreemp Nice character art! 👍 I'll be sure to add a clearer indication of what the arrow means and more boss attacks in the post-Compo version, whenever I actually get around to it.

@coleslaughter I'm glad you liked the music's increasing speed! I'm a big fan of when games have music that changes as you advance through a boss fight or get farther into a level (heck, Nintendo even does it in Mario Kart games as you go from selecting a driver to selecting a course to play).

Here's to hoping the next Ludum Dare entry is even better! All of my past Ludum Dare entries are almost laughable compared to what I can do in 48 hours when I do things I'm actually decent at such as chiptune music and pixel art. Improving my skills makes better games, but doing what I'm actually somewhat skilled at brings even more improvement.

@levidsmith That's a pretty good score you got on the boss fight, thank you for playing!

@schwede I believe that games that raise awareness about mental health problems definitely have the potential to improve and save lives. An anti-suicide game could help someone realize they do have reasons to live, a game about depression could encourage someone to seek professional help, etc.

@gamebuilder I'm glad you enjoyed the dark and edgy mood! It would seem that the Mood category appears to be my strong suit in Ludum Dare entries....

*Very* good graphics! All of the screen effects, shading, etc makes this an absolutely beautiful-looking game.

The way each level had different mechanics was really nice, and you definitely nailed the theme with the game's ending. The final level was a really good difficulty and probably took me about 10 minutes, turns out running at the enemies and then jumping to trick them into punching the air works pretty well.

8 8-legged creatures escaped, how nice!

Highlighting where the spider will jump to is a *really* nice touch since the falling leaves aren't exactly predictable! The cycles of rain and sunshine are really nice too, without the rain to wash the spider back down to the bottom the game would be a bit too easy. The game's difficulty curve is perfect, I love how chaotic it gets at the end.

Nice choice of song, too. I wonder why you chose that.... 😜
