This games has really scary atmosphere, I love everything in this game and I think it's very ambitious. I couldn't play more than 5 minutes because it's too scary, I don't love horrors because of this. I believe that this project will be one of the best <3
Man it sucks to be the new guy! Very cool execution and feels very juicy. The initial encounter with the monster scared me to death, I loved it.
Such a polished and beautifully presented game! Very atmospheric sound and music with absolutely gorgeous pixel art!
The gameplay was a little simple and I kind of wish there had been a bit more "story" to it, considering how well developed the other artistic aspects were.
Overall, amazing work! Loved it!

WOW ! Just wow ! Really nice idea, and professionaly executed  Good graphics good audio, nice song at the end :D Stuck in a loop :musical_note: The main character doesn't seem bothered by sudden zombies around him though haha
Very polished game, the music are art are fantastic. It was super hard, I could never get too far, it seemed like if there were enemies chasing and I had to reload it was pretty much guaranteed death. The enemies also blended in with the background. I had a hard time being able to read how many were chasing.

At the moment, this is the best game on this Jam that I have played. Amazing!
Wow that was good! Great art and music and inter-death dialogue.
It is really easy to die, and I had to switch my play style to be super defense so I could cheese the AI. Finally got it after four very quick deaths. I think tweaking a few things could help elevate the experience: jumping felt delayed so platforming was a bit clunky, I don't how much life I have left which made it harder for me to take risks, the numbers of possible player characters dwindles but the AI reset every time you die... a lot of games follow this style but it can kind of tedious to kill the same thing over and over again until you can dance around them carefully enough.
Realy nice implementation of the theme, and very nice graphics.

Haha nice usage of the theme "Stuck in the (hyper)loop"! The game is crazy beautiful and the mood, reinforced by the music and sound design, is amazing. Really well done! A little complain though: in the dark, it is very hard to see close enemies because of the way the light works. I don't know how it would be better, but the contrast of light makes it hard to understand what is just in front of us. Otherwise, really nice job!

I don't normaly play horror games, and i propably would not have played yours if it was more obvious from the screenshots.
I liked that you can look through walls with your flashlight, even though that might not be intended.
After playing the second passenger, the monsters ganged up on me where you have to jump down. SO I was dying there everytime and could not even shoot down from above.
In the intro scene it was not immediately clear to me, that i have to press enter to progress in the conversation, and something like elevator music would have been nice.
other than that i do like the graphics, soundtrack and the mood it creates.
The mood the graphics and music give is spot on! Liked the concept and extra points for the "looping" tunnel at the start!
First time I played I was walking left for 3 minutes because I thought it would loop ;-; Very very nice looking game, and combined with the story and sound design the atmosphere is incredible. Great job!
Awesome mood ! You did a great job. I is pretty scary !
Very good presentation, solid core gameplay, but sometimes caught by enemies with little chance to see them. The approach to 'lives' is great (except there's always more people in the car visible through the windows, even on the last two lives).

This is an incredible achievement in three days even with a big team. I liked the touch of reloading dropping my flashlight. The issues I ran into most were the cursor getting caught at the edge of the screen and a slight lag in responsiveness to jumping.
Beautiful looking game, I'm in awe of the graphical detail you went to, things like the flashlight bouncing with the recoil, and the eerie way that colour works its magic in near pitch darkness. Also incredible having such a cinematic intro in a jam entry, good job everyone who worked on this game!
Brilliant - beautiful to look and terrifying to play! The synthwave soundtrack is a gem. Nice work! [@hapticfabric for Classy Bogan Studios]
You guys game is so much closer to what i wanted to make than what i ended up making. Very polished game looks awesome and great to play. Only bad thing i can say is i kept dying when i drop down the stairs because there were always monsters waiting for me that killed me before i could do anything

@aterlamia Thanks for your nice feedback :) Gonna check out your hyperloop game next. The issue with the shaft filled of monsters is a known issue and seems to be a bigger problem than we anticipated. But you can shoot down the shaft and hit the monsters even when you don't see them. That's currently the only real way to safely pass this section if it's filled with monsters. Sorry about the frustration!
Omg fantastic game. sound effect and atmosphere is wonderful. this game feel me like half-life. Congratulations
Enjoyed the game! Very scary mood and great graphics! The sound effects are really terrifying. Music is also really cool. Congrats!

The art, sound, dialogues and mood are amazing! I really enjoyed the atmosphere and small details like rats animation and AI, flashlight, gun reload movement.
The gameplay though seemed a bit trivial, I was really looking forward to some creative game mechanics. The enemies were rather easy, so I haven't found much challenge there.
That being said, it all fits really well together and makes for a really immersive experience. I really liked how you implemented the dying/replay!
There are a couple of weird thing I've found that would hopefully be useful for you polish the game even more: - when going all the way to the left the game weirdly teleports you a couple of steps back which ruins the immersion. When moving all the way to the right there is no visual feedback that it's not the way you're supposed to go. - since I managed not to die the first time, I tried to replay and some weird stuff started happening. It seems like the game doesn't reset after you finish it. The lights were on and after dying it showed the train moving without any chance to replay. - so I refreshed the page and tried to die all the way. After game over, if you restart, the light is off and the scary sounds are playing.
But overall, great idea and solid realization! Amazing job!
Really nice submission. The best part was the atmosphere and the sound/music. Not quite sure how this game was "stuck in a loop" since my progression seem to carry over from life to life.

Loving firstie's confidence!
This may genuinely be the first LD I've ever played that was a little scary and creepy. 3 days is not much time to really work in that ramping atmosphere and pacing. Fantastic pixel art and great audio too, I love the music and voices!
https://www.twitch.tv/videos/762553836?t=01h03m06s
Impressive that so many different people can make such a cohesive game in 3 days. Great work!
I especially enjoyed the sound design and pixel art in this game. And there was also that interesting fact that you lose vision when you reload. Great idea!

Dang, another banger. So many amazing games this LD and this is sure one of them. Like mentioned before the atmosphere of this game is just GREAT. This jumpscared me several times!
very good , scary and the zombie things did give me a jump! nice!
This game is awesome! The graphics were amazing, the music was amazing, and the sound effects were amazing - I liked pretty much every aspect of this game! And the idea to make the player's "lives" exist as being the other characters going to go check on things was unique and amazing! I felt like it even, in addition to some of the other things, contributed very well to the theme. I also loved the horror aspects! Honestly this has to be not only one of my favorite Ludum Dare games, but also one of my favorite games in general. This would be awesome as a full game! My only complaint is that I would have liked a bit more fleshed out story (Of course, there's a limited time and you've got to focus on the most important aspects, which you did very well!) but I would have at least liked a hint towards what those creatures were and what they were doing there, and maybe a reaction from the other passengers if you win but don't make it back alive would have been neat. But seriously, overall, this game was amazing! Well done!

Woah what a large team you have! The game is awesome! Very polished. It's good that you focused on the sounds and ambience as sounds are very important in horror games. The sounds really fit well together. You've created a polished game of this level with that size of team in just 3 days. What more if you made a game for a few months? If this game will be expanded, I am really interested to play!
Quite a polished game, you had a huge team and it really shows. The art & sound were to a high standard and the gameplay felt solid and well made.
Thanks for all the nice and helpful feedback! :)
@blue-pin-studio Regarding the theme, it's sort of a play on words. You're riding the hyperloop ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyperloop ) and get stuck and need to repair it. So the theme affected the setting/story of our game more than its mechanics.
In other news, we're going to push a fix today for an issue where low frame rates caused the player to lack the jump height necessary to pass certain points in the level. For for all of you who did get stuck because of that, sorry! And feel very free to try again once the bug is fixed.

It's a very good platformer/shoot, very polished! I'm amazed by this game you managed to put together in that short amount of time. The graphics are awesome too!
One thing thought, the jumps are kind of weird. I spent an unnecessary amount of time to jump on that pipe at the beginning of the game, it was very frustrating.

Cool game, during our brainstorming phase we also thought about a hyperloop topic, but then decided to go in a slightly different direction. Really cool to see this theme come to live. And such perfect execution. Like the atmosphere. Only the character movement could be a bit more smooth, but anyways, the newbie probably is not the best trained player character :)
Looks fantastic. Unfortunately ran into the physics bug. I hope I get to try it again with the bugfix.

Great graphics and sound. I can't say I managed to get too far though... I did find that if I stayed on a platform, the enemies would try to jump up to me and I could just pick them off from there, which was pretty cool!
Incredible atmosphere, great storyline and overall really fun. Impressive it was made with such a big team without production issues. Felt like the start of a real game, rather than a ludum dare.
Awesome game, I personally like horror games and it has such a great scary atmosphere although it's a 2D pixel-art game, which can't be seen very often. I loved the way it went and I strongly recommend you to ~~play our game~~ continue with development of this. For three-day work, this is incredible.
Congrats to the entire team for this entry. Although the train had to be full of the most agreeable yet disagreeable people on the planet, the excellent graphics and the music all added to a superb atmosphere. I really do like how no one even mentions the shadow-beasts once the train is started again, I just honestly found it funny, and the ending song was a VERY nice touch. Well done!

Incredible entry, aesthetically amazing and story is simple but great
Awesome game! Everything is great. I guess the only thing I didn't quite like was the jumping mechanics, being able to jump with both the W and space keys, but still, that's pushing a bit. Great work!

Awesome game! It was really scary... Especially the gun recharging mechanics, when you flashlight goes down. That creates a perfect tension!
It is definitely the most polished game I've seen in this jam. Superb visuals and audio. Good job!
ROFL now you guys are just plain trolling with that size a team :) I actually want to discuss this a bit before going into the game itself.
First off, there are a few people here saying this kind of game is mostly possible because you have a large team. This is a misconception, I can't stress enough how a a 15 man team is INCREDIBLY hard to pull off. I've done LD with ~13 people a number of times and I know it takes good leadership, communication, systems, and teamwork to do something like that. Hell, brainstorming alone can take hours depending on the personalities involved. A large team is great for a normal project, but under the jam time restrictions it can be chaotic. Big kudos to you all!
I'd love to hear how you structured your team (whether in a blog post or here). How do you all know each other? Did you have a leader or was the direction spread across multiple people? Were you able to get most of what you wanted in or did you have to cut a lot of content? I'm very curious because I was always trying to improve my team's game quality, but since other teams don't get this big I didn't have anyone else to learn from.
As for the game, like others here I am not a fan of horror games or movies. At all. However, because it was a 2d platformer with good controls, that gave me a lot of confidence. I thought "ok well, I'm good at these games, so even if something jumps me I can handle it. That eased my fears quite a bit and I could play it nearly at my normal comfort level.
While the enemies were scary and dangerous, I did feel myself improving each death. I started to understand their AI over time "oh crap they can jump!" and where they tend to spawn. I game over'd the first time, but beat it on my first try after I tried again. In some ways I was relieved the game is relatively short. I was afraid I was gonna have to go through that entire first section again if I died.
Very well done game. Tbh when I see art that good and clean, I actually get skeptical about if the gameplay can match. This is not the case here. You have a solid project all around, and I hope to see 20 people in the credits next time ;)

@peachtreeoath thanks a lot for your comment! Firstly, I agree coordinating such a big team is quite a challenge. It worked pretty well for us for a number of reasons: - we're all work colleagues (well, 12/15 are) and most of us have worked with each other for years - around half of us have worked together on previous game jams (e.g. Friendly Fire in April's Ludum Dare) - we were able to relatively cleanly split into sub teams, e.g. ~4ish people focused mostly on sound and music, 2 on graphics and level design, and one or two who spent much of the time playtesting. From what I can tell (but may be biased) the biggest challenge was having ~6 coders coordinate properly, 5 of which weren't really familiar with the engine @kayahr had developed over the months; so we did a lot of teaming up there where people who didn't yet know how to do something themselves would watch one of the other coders using discord or VS Code Liveshare, but it didn't take much time until everybody had their own couple of features to develop in relative isolation, which worked quite well, I think - also, 15 people may sound more than it was from a pure workload perspective, as many didn't have the full 3 or even 2 days - the brainstorming itself was quite intense and took probably around 4 hours, most of which we spent discussing variations of time loops, until we unexpectedly settled with the Hyperloop idea in the end instead. I was indeed surprised we managed to end up with an idea all of us seemed to be reasonably happy with (I hope this is true and people weren't just too shy to communicate their real preferences.. :D)
Did we have to cut a lot of content? Surprisingly, I don't think so. There were a few ideas we scrapped in the end due to lack of time, such as avoiding Game Over scenarios altogether by having a second pod replace the first one, with a new team of 5 individuals. Or small things such as having the player character react to things more often, such as the corpse. I for some time had "make light cast shadows" on my list, but then other things were more important and the not so accurate lighting seemed to work well enough. I'd also have liked to have the dialog scenes a bit more dynamic, with proper sitting animations, and the designated problem-solver actually getting up and walking to the door. But in the great scheme of things, that's all not too relevant and we imho ended up with a game much more complete than in our previous iterations. (update: talked to the team about this, and turns out I just forgot a lot of things. Among them are a "proper" intro and outro with the character walking around in the non-hyperloop-world, a flamethrower which you'd find in the level, but also needed to find fuel to use it, death traps in the level, and an Elon Musk appearance of course because why not)
I'm glad you managed to get to the end, and sorry (as well as thank you) to everyone who dislikes horror games and still gives it a shot. Actually managing to create an effective eerie atmosphere and have working jump scares in the game was a great motivation and interesting challenge for a jam game which we hadn't tried before.
Thanks for the breakdown!
- Ah ok, I was suspecting that about work colleagues. It helps a ton. I tended to pull in random folks a lot ("hey you code? Why don't you join me this weekend...") which made it hard to grow quickly in overall skill across jams, but I liked the challenge. - Yep I totally get it, it's very rare to have people that can do the full weekend. We rarely even got 1/3 to do that. - Haha, for brainstorming I would usually try to take a backseat because 1 less voice helped reach an agreement faster. I'm glad you guys found one that resonated with everyone.

Nice ! Simple and addictive !
Amazing game! Very polished and attractive. You nailed the atmosphere precisely, it was chilling and claustrophobic. Managed to finish it without losing a life the second time round. hyperloopgame.png
So let me point correctly, it is a very nice, short, but ready to deploy game. Not a prototype, but a game. The another question that it's quite hard to rate it, mostly because it was done by so many people.
I guess I'll not rate at all, because I don't understand how to compare this game with prototypes made by 1-4 people.
Heya! Thanks for submitting your game to my stream at [wwww.twitch.tv/drjavasaurus](www.twitch.tv/drjavasaurus). This game is beautiful and deserves praise. I see a lot of critisism above here and granted, the team is big in size, but nothing is stopping people from doing the exact same thing. Managing a team is a choice and definitely not as easy or as big of an advantage as you would think. I personally did compo and was alone, by choice. People have the right to form teams and that is what a game jam should all be about.
That being said, I enjoyed this game ! The shooting is fun, it had a jumpscare or two and it kept me on edge traversing and finding the switches. Well done, I for one really enjoyed it :)
Short, but pretty nice submission. I don't like the absence of the simple numerical information about ammo in the clip of the weapon.

Really scary game, I like it.. You see the quality of a game made by many people.. good job.
Very cool game, 10 note setting, and good music, I would recommend adding a running animation, and not using walking to do it, I would add a fullscreen button to give more immersion, I made it for a horror jam once a game called "The Explorer" in it the goal was to make a horror game of at most 2 playable minutes, in it I have similar elements, if you want to know this is the link https://etrealjunior.itch.io/the-explorer, congratulations the team again, a big hug.
My god, the sound design of this game was simply AMAZING, I never thought a pixel art 2d game would scare me, but those screams prove me wrong :). Very good entry! The decision not to show the number of bullets was good, this increases the feeling of insecurity in the player and contributes to the aesthetics of terror that you chose. The only thing I would improve is the player's movement, he seems to slide on the ground and gain momentum as if he were walking on ice, and not allowing any kind of control in the air is a bit harsh haha. Overall super fun game, well done!

Wow, this is the most pro looking and sounding game I've played in this ldjam. Gameplay was pretty basic horror point and shoot, very solid at it too, but the amount of polish to the presentation in this little time is incredible.
I played it through and was astonished even by the end credits. Great entry!

Cool atmosphere. Nice dialog. Creepy vibes. Perfect pixel art. Congrats!
As usual, thanks for playing and for your comments everyone! We appreciate it a lot. :)
@tricky-fat-cat yeah, leaving the HUD out of it was a decision we made in order to maximize immersion and that feeling of isolation/helplessles. We didn't even all agree all in our team that this was a good idea, so it makes sense some players feel similarly about this and dislike the missing information. Hope you still had a good time with it! And thanks a lot for your feedback.
Superb. Overall the presentation is excellent elevated by the audio in general. Gunplay feels satisfying. Really like the use of lighting which ads to the mood and atmosphere. I would maybe add a small lighting/glow around the platforms I can jump on/jump down to so I can see them better. There's also quite a lot of dialogue to get through but that's just my personal pref. Well done and good luck!
Great entry! This game is just oozing with atmosphere. It's obvious that you guys put a lot of effort into it. I don't think I have ever heard singing in a jam game before :D Seriously, this game is very polished and it shows.
You also did a great job with building tension. The sounds in the tunnels and the lights going out set the stage perfectly for the first enemy encounter. But the dialogue at the start is just as important. It is both effective as an introduction to the world and at creating a sense of unease in an otherwise cheery beginning.
I like that the flashlight beam is so narrow, it adds a lot to the creepiness. I don't think the game would work as well if it wasn't. However, this also makes it pretty difficult for me to see if I hit or killed an enemy. The hit sound is also a little too subtle for me, I only noticed it on my second playthrough. Some more indication would be helpful, perhaps by adding bullet trails or increasing the volume of the sound effect.
I also appreciate that the player can't walk infinitely far away from the train ;)
Again, I really like this entry. I want more of it!

That's what you can expect from a team of very talented artists and developers. The graphics and especially characters reminds me a bit of Darkside Detective ( which is actually a great inspiration as I take from it myself !). The mood execution is spot-on with both visual / audio mix as well as decently crafted short moments. I wish it was longer though, but nontheless a gem on it's own and great experience to play. Fantastic work guys! looking forward for longer version!

I think I found a bug. I died in the middle of turning on the first switch with the key, before it says "maybe we should go find another switch" and I wasn't able to ever flip the other switch (I found the other switch, but it just said it wasn't working even though the first switch was flipped).
Otherwise, fun experience, right amount of horror to make me jump and I liked that the characters blended into the background a bit. You could have doubled the level size and I would have enjoyed exploring it! Did shooting the rats do anything?

The creepy mood was wonderfully executed. The monsters were horrifying the first time they jump out at you with that scream, but became quite manageable once you pay attention :)
There was a bug at the end though, where the footstep sound loops after reentering the loop.

What a team! And I can see it's even a biggest team this time! Great job. Te ambient/atmosphere is very scary. I like all the details (rats, lights...). Nice pixel Art and animation. The introduction implements very well the mood and I like how the text is coming. Just some small details : The scrolling could be more soft. (I find it a bit quaky while following the movement of the character). Perhaps stop the animation and foot noise when we are stuck on a wall. (sometimes the foot step noise continue when I died.) For the theme I just find the fact that there's an infinte loop left and right at the beginning. But perhaps there's something else that I didn'f find. Unfortunately I was not able to go very far : I find the game not easy because we are quickly out of munitions... But anyway! I could play enough to see that it's a very nice polished game. Congratulation to all of you!

Thanks for playing and commenting everyone! We really appreciate it!
@matootsy The theme is mostly in the setting - you're "stuck in the (hyper)loop".
Also @matootsy R lets you reload, in case that wasn't clear (it's mentioned in the start screen, but not in the game itself, so it's easy to overlook - with just a little more time we surely would have made sure to add a little hint to the game itself instead of leaving people surprised once they run out of ammo the first time).
Unlike compo, so this is how Jam looks like! So great on every aspect, there is even an ending song! Totally blows my mind away! Great works, guys! And, truly terrifying! Small advise: I know you guys hide the health bar on purpose, but if there is a almost dying effect, like a heartbeat or some blood blur on screen, maybe will add more terrifying~
This is an astonishing accomplishment given the time allowed. You've really made the most of this jam! Great job! :D
*Edit:* And [here is the VOD](https://www.twitch.tv/videos/768533153) of me playing your game on stream. Thanks for submitting it!
Saying it's impressive would be an understatement, it's so fleshed out and polished for a jam game, that's an excellent submission !

I didn't at all expect so much content and polish! For me, the whole game played out fairly admirable. The first corpse didn't know that the gun would eventually run out of ammo and died to a mutant(?) after shooting rats for fun, the second one was very careful with his ammo and made a lot of progress before he died, the third one did FINALLY learn how to reload (read: I finally learned), but was of course at one point jumped by way too many beasts, the fourth again made a lot of progress before dying, and then... with the last person left, I finally got it and made it through!
This learning curve felt... incredibly natural and encouraged without being forced! This game is easily one of my favourites so far, well done and thank you for your tremendous work!
The scariest moment in the game was when I decided to go left with my third character. I decided he is a bit of an asshole, and wondered if he can maybe reach some station on foot and ditch the suckers . So I was walking, walking, and walking through the Hyperloop tunnel for about 5 minutes, maybe even more. I reached nothing, so I figured it's time turn around. I expected to have to walk back... yet I bumped into the Hyperloop car right away. Scared the shit out of me!
It's a very polished game and I really liked the concept of playing each passenger in turn. I very much died on my first try (everybody died, I mean) - totally forgot I can reload my gun  But on my second try, I managed to fix everything with the first guy and all was well... until...
I think the horror elements are well done here. The monsters roaring in the darkness was just the perfect amount of creepy, lighting was great and if you really think about it: being stuck in a fancy metro cart, in the darkness, with strangers and monsters roaring happily in the distance is nobody's idea of fun. I'm surprised the last guy even has the guts to get out of the train car
Conversations of the passengers at the beginning was also pleasant and gave a bit of meat to the whole story. If each of them made some little comments as they explored the world - that could give them some personality and flesh everything out even more.
The song at the end took me by surprise! But it was a pleasant surprise. All the soundscape in this game is just glorious (song, music, sound effects - all of it!). The voice-over at the beginning could be a bit higher level in comparison to the music but I seriously have no other complaints at all.
Well done!
Bruh, this is some top-notch quality stuff. :ok_hand:
The sound design is superb, the visuals and lighting are excellent, the story is simple but effective. You got more than a few jumps outta me throughout the game, and I enjoyed it wholeheartedly.
I do think some of the enemy placements were a bit unfair, especially when they had the high ground in a narrow chasm, so you had to sort of bait 'em down in order to tackle them safely, which I think broke the immersion and atmosphere a bit, but that's a tiny blemish on an otherwise excellent game.
Hats off to y'all, this is prolly the best overall package I've encountered in this jam so far.

WOW!!! If this wasn't so short, it would be a full game. Very polished, great graphics, great audio, and you even have singing! This is one of the most polished and complete LD entries I've ever seen, great work!
It really is a shame that it's so short, but that's understandable. I hope you all continue working on this, as I really dig the premise. Maybe let the player switch between the different passengers, with each one having their own strengths and abilities. There's a lot of potential here!

Congratulations to all the team for this amazing game! Visually, it's incredible, it's something I can easily could buy on Steam just for the graphics. The characters, the backgrounds, the monsters, the animations (I liked how the dialogues pop up) Everything it's perfect. 5 stars on graphics. Music and sound are also great, the monsters grunts gave me chills. 5 stars on sound as well. The mood is another strong point, great horror atmosphere. 5 stars on mood. The mechanics and controls are smooth and easy to understand, thanks for that. I only wish it were longer to play more.

Wow a 15 people team, thats a lot of people, that must have been hard to coordinate ! The result is really on point, congratulation ! Its very well polished for a jam game, and the horror atmosphere is really good ! The only problem I can point is the fact that you can get lost by going left at the start, and that was my first instinct, the game is a bit less fun when you stay in an endless empty tunnel ^^
Like my mate @jrevel said just above, good job on coordinating 15 people ! Mood is great, audio is super cool, and good graphics aswell. Not a fan of horror games myself 'cause I freak out so easily, but this one is really nice !
Great job! It's so polished it seems like a full game that got worked on for months, not something a group put together in a few days!

Whoa, I'm so surprised that you made such a big game in only 72 hours? Graphics and everything? I know, 15 people and everything but still... Such an amazing job! The game is great - so polished, so nice to look at, listen to it... Here, have all my points!
Damn this was a really solid game. The mood was on point and it was really fun too. I also really like the way death is handled. Definitely one of my favourite games from this jam :)
What a treat: I thoroughly admire that you even could come up with the game plot, let alone execute it so beautifully in this short time span. Maybe you all should get involved in politics and chase viruses or solve climate change once and for all? Just kidding.

First and foremost: Brilliant atmosphere.
I did not expect a horror game until I stumbled over the corpse, which really set the mood. The first enemy encounter gave me a legitimate scare.
The pixel art was nice, but the visual and especially sound effects made the game.
The song at the end was beautiful as well.
Also, I liked that the way back was shortened, if you move into the wrong direction at the start. IMHO better than an arbitrary barrier of some sort.
