LD47 — Stuck in a loop

Asteroid Catcher by Jcourt 2020-10-13T04:12:59Z

Everything was way too tiny for my laptop display. Zooming in thankfully made the text bigger so I could read it, but most of the asteroids were way too tiny for me to be able to click on them to attract/deflect. Giving a huge field of view makes sense or else we wouldn't be able to see what is coming, but you could increase the clickable area of the asteroids to help circumvent the tiny size. I think otherwise the orbiting mechanics of this is really interesting and fun, assuming I can click on stuff :smile:

Circuit City by firellon 2020-10-13T03:53:06Z

The robots are so cute! The sound of them bumping into each other constantly does get a bit old though 0.0 I'm not sure sound feedback was needed for that. Maybe a little animated sad face or something above the robot would have been enough to show that they were being blocked. Different little reaction emojis that are color-coded will let the player know really quickly what is happening without even having to look directly at the little robots. Overall fun and polished! (was missing a "delete" feature but eh, you only have so much time to code these things)

A.C.E. by awerar 2020-10-06T06:18:32Z

I tried to open the macOS application but all I got was "The Application A.C.E - Mac OSX.app can't be opened." Then if I try really hard I get "... because the developer cannot be verified." Let me know if you publish a newer version that world on the latest macOS. Cheers.

Cursed Labyrinth by marbles 2020-10-06T06:43:35Z

Wow those animations at the last scene are fun! I appreciate that there is a beginning, middle, and end. I played the web version but couldn't play on Safari (switched over to Google Chrome).

Dungeon - Repeat! by Stratcat66 2020-10-06T15:31:50Z

Made it to the end! I thought it was really interesting that you can mess with your past lives. There is a lot of potential there for all kinds of puzzles. Awesome and great work!

Gorilla Taxi by Rongo Matane 2020-10-10T20:09:45Z

Hi, wow this really takes me back to the original Grand Theft Auto games, as well as driving the taxi around in Vice City! My favorite part of those games was listening to the radio, and I really appreciate that that feature is in this game. Thank you so much for this very pleasant experience in the sea of submissions! I guess a comment on the gameplay would be even with the retirement money lowered to $10,000 it's still a pretty daunting number to reach in terms of playing and rating games for this Jam. Also, there was a place where the road mysteriously ended and I was so confused and just kept driving through the white void (major road exiting towards the bottom-right).

Do-While-For by primitive-concept 2020-10-13T03:25:39Z

Lol wat the heck :smile_cat: That was awesome! Totally weird and quirky and I like it. Boss music was EPIC! I was able to cheese the boss by staying mostly to the top-left, but otherwise didn't notice any other hiccups. The text was a little hard to read and I guess I wasn't even sure how the level progressed most times but hey, I pet the weird pixel demon cat god so I guess we're good.

Lucy Liuper (~DreamLooper) by Prostone 2020-10-07T03:04:01Z

Wall jump for the win! :laughing: I love the "past life interacts with the world" mechanic. There is a lot of potential there!

Boomie by Chris Hall 2020-10-06T06:46:27Z

@Prostone thank you for the feedback! I think we figured out where you got stuck (we found two possible spots, one soft-lock and another had an issue with collisions). As for the other web browser support... OOOPS... we didn't budget any time to check other web browser :sweat_smile: We've updated the submission to fix crashes on Safari, Opera, and Firefox, as well as eliminate the soft-locks we found. Cheers.

Boomie by Chris Hall 2020-10-06T06:47:20Z

@holly, @floboc, thank you! We had lots of fun making it. Every step of the way held pleasant surprises :smile:

Boomie by Chris Hall 2020-10-06T07:18:24Z

@chris-fagan which browser are you using? Someone else reported this. I would recommend trying another browser (Chrome). Cheers

Boomie by Chris Hall 2020-10-06T07:23:04Z

@benjamin, thank you! And yes, that is the hardest puzzle in the game. Too late to change it for the purposes of this Jam, but I think like probably 60-80% of people get stuck there. I agree that there needed to be some ramp-up to introduce more concepts (boomie-through-a-door, then timer-switch, then combine, etc., etc.)... if only we had more time :smile:

Boomie by Chris Hall 2020-10-06T17:00:49Z

@duke, @chris-fagan, can you try disabling your AdBlocker? I just discovered an issue that our `boomerang.js` gets AdBlocked :laughing:

Boomie by Chris Hall 2020-10-06T17:53:49Z

@duke, @chris-fagan, @prostone, we pushed up a fix that renames the file "boomerang.js" to "boomie.js" and the game should work now with AdBlockers turned on :laughing:

Boomie by Chris Hall 2020-10-07T05:35:57Z

@lees-pac thank you!

Boomie by Chris Hall 2020-10-07T06:19:59Z

Thank you @thundersalt, @fireslash! Everything is such a mad dash to get things put together it was easy to lose scope on how to pace the game properly. Often times I would make a puzzle and then we wouldn't have any time to redo it or put it somewhere else. We've heard a variety of responses on difficulty, from it being too slow/boring, to being just fine, to it having too hard of a spike near the end. Now that I am rating games, I appreciate ones that are easy to pick up and get through quickly, like a bite-sized snack.

And yes, we do plan to continue working on Boomie :smile: We made a design doc the first day and we had lots of ideas we couldn't get to that we think could push this concept to the next level.

Thanks again for the feedback. Cheers!

Boomie by Chris Hall 2020-10-08T04:30:01Z

@nardandas, @walaber, thank you so much for your feedback! Haha and thank goodness I added the floor pattern tiles or else it would look a lot more bland...

Boomie by Chris Hall 2020-10-08T14:26:20Z

Thank you @fryer! We are glad you love the game :smile: There was definitely not enough time to explore everything that was possible, and my goal was to introduce each concept in the “Nintendo style” (provide gentle introductions with variations to teach you the idea) which is why it was mostly easy (except for the one hard puzzle :sweat_smile: ) I’m a big fan of the level design teaching you how things work and that seems to have been mostly successful.

Boomie by Chris Hall 2020-10-14T04:16:38Z

@el-pepi sorry you felt like you were soft-locked! That is the trickiest puzzle in the game, but to get out of that position you need to hit the first switch again.

Screen Shot 2020-10-13 at 9.12.47 PM.png

Anyways, thanks for playing! Glad you enjoyed it even though you restarted the game. Cheers!

Day in the Life of an Ordinary Turtle by NoahRo 2020-10-06T06:06:22Z

Lol the Devil boss's walk animation though :laughing:

I was stuck at the first screen for a while because I didn't know that I had to press space to do stuff... Looks great but there doesn't seem to be much of a game here (more of an art piece) which is cool. Cool to see it on so many platforms!

Day in the Life of an Ordinary Turtle by NoahRo 2020-10-07T03:46:27Z

Haha @williwiderstand that's really awesome! I can't seem to damage or be damaged, so still an art piece :wink:

Revenge of the zombie attack by Sabeurre 2020-10-07T04:49:20Z

Haha I was so confused for the first 10 iterations. I thought crowds of people were running away from the giant hopping zombie but it turns out EVERYONE was a zombie :laughing: Started placing weapons it began to make a lot more sense. Kind of odd to have everything along the ground... couldn't really tell what was happening most of the time. I just clicked and placed things semi-randomly and it all seemed to work out just fine after a while :smile: There was a little strategy (placing barbed wire earlier to slow down enemies) which I think is something to lean into more. Cheers and thanks for the zombie killing fun!

Hyperloop by very dark lord 2020-10-06T07:10:29Z

Wow that was good! Great art and music and inter-death dialogue.

It is really easy to die, and I had to switch my play style to be super defense so I could cheese the AI. Finally got it after four very quick deaths. I think tweaking a few things could help elevate the experience: jumping felt delayed so platforming was a bit clunky, I don't how much life I have left which made it harder for me to take risks, the numbers of possible player characters dwindles but the AI reset every time you die... a lot of games follow this style but it can kind of tedious to kill the same thing over and over again until you can dance around them carefully enough.

Spelunker on Rails by exofrenon 2020-10-10T19:27:07Z

Nice I love the concept! I wasn't always sure what the lose condition was... (did it matter that little bugs where on the track?) (did it matter how many loops I completed?) Sometimes it seems like enemies pooled around destroyed crystals (which I guess helped me a bit on the last level). I think additional little variations like power-ups, being able to switch up the track, placing slow-downs for enemies, etc. would be things to help expand this concept to the next level. For some reason you didn't put "audio" as a category I could rate but I thought your sound selections were great for this game. Cheers!

Pig-em-Up: Lassos Are Loops, Too! by Jamison 2020-10-06T05:54:44Z

Very nicely done :smile: This was a fun a refreshing game! I thought the bar at the top was a timer... it wasn't until the end until I realized it was my health. Getting the pig to flicker would be an easy way to show that it is getting damaged. I liked the hand at the top that told me to GOOOOOOOO :laughing:

MONKEY BUSINESS by QuadApe 2020-10-06T15:16:53Z

"MONKEY BUSINESS is damaged and cannot be opened" :frowning2: (I'm on the latest macOS)

MONKEY BUSINESS by QuadApe 2020-10-06T15:42:39Z

@quadape thank you for the hint. I ran

``` xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine ~/Downloads/MONKEY\ BUSINESS.app/ ```
from the terminal and then was able to double-click on the app to start it.
WOW. So zippy! Best platformer I've played this jam!
Featherfall by armytag 2020-10-07T04:11:58Z
I WIN!!! Cute graphics and the world wraps in every direction! The vertical wrapping was pleasantly surprising, as were the little upgrades. Thank you for the chill game. Cheers.
Nugget by plloyer 2020-10-07T03:13:01Z
Haha wow what a ride that was. Did somebody on the team record themselves saying "bok bok bok bok..." ??? Super funny and I love the idea of "evolving" to overcome obstacles. Setting this all in a slaughterhouse is kind of horrifying... maybe a version with less blood or hanging bodies would be nice :sweat_smile:
The Time Terrorists by Wilko 2020-10-06T18:58:04Z
Very pretty and a great concept for a puzzle! It would be nice if the characters all had something visually unique about them from the start (given randomly perhaps?). It is hard to track a single character from the electric box to the graffiti wall for example, especially if they pit-stop all in the same room. I ended up killing guys randomly until one wasn't a bystander, and then finding the person next to the bomb.
Imperial Eggnog Incorporated by Blue Pin Studio 2020-10-06T19:13:54Z
Looks great and I appreciate the voice acting! Would be good if the first nog you verified was a guaranteed "good" with a confirmation from the narrator, and the second one was "bad" with a similar confirmation. I had to wait until I did all 6 before I got some feedback on what was right or wrong (the very first nog I got had slightly discolored box art and I wasn't sure what to do since I was still learning how everything worked). Also "there is an extreme amount of cream headed your way... don't worry about it" is hilarious. Thanks for the chuckle.
Ejected by Fryer 2020-10-10T19:15:08Z
This is an interesting concept! Took me about three tries before I figured out I could push off against rocks using jump, but that is good because there are a few ways to change momentum which I think gives the idea a lot of potential.
It seems like it is really easy to get touched by the smallest part of the broken satellites to bring a run to an end. Reducing the collision area, or clearly showing the "area of death" would be helpful as you approached. Or perhaps instead of instantly killing you it severely reduces your oxygen level.
Also, it would be nice to have a "meters to goal" for the arrow, because otherwise I'm not sure if I am improving between each run.
Cheers!
A-Cornered by Chris Fagan 2020-10-07T03:21:27Z
Awww so cute! :chipmunk: Yeah I agree with everyone else that the art is really spot-on. I think I mostly got hit by the blue spikes... they can be hard to spot moving so fast. Something simple like placing a glow are shadow around the flying pieces as well as showing an alert on the screen where the projectile is coming from could be a huge help.
Also, thank you for giving our game Boomie multiple shots @chris-fagan while we figured out our crashes :smile: Cheers!
GravLoop by AvatarGreggles 2020-10-07T04:03:05Z
Wow I totally fell through the floor and am now at the bottom of some black abyss with little red balls occasionally raining down upon me :laughing: I had gotten the second fuel thing and then hit by an enemy mid-air. However, I love the little alien creatures and the sounds! :alien:
Chrysanthemums Fragrance by Roberto Nascimento Almada 2020-10-07T04:35:02Z
Wow this looks like a dense game. I went into the shack and clicking on the sink caused my game to freeze (i'm on macOS if that matters)... The fuzzy aesthetic is kind of fun, although it wasn't very clear to my why it got brighter and darker and it probably could have been toned down a bit. Also, why did I have to wait longer for stuff to happen due to "health reasons"? :smile: I swear I wasn't poking around the dead body.
Having a few descriptions for what things are when you mouse over them (the various herbs, etc.) would be helpful as I didn't know what half the things were or what they might be used for (this game might have been to smart for me). Luckily I finally figured out that I could combine three different items to make a light source and head down into the basement. Very spooky! Lots of great environmental story-telling!
Hamsterwheel by Tipu 2020-10-06T14:48:51Z
Sticking to the walls was a nice touch! The platforming was a little unforgiving, but I think the wall-stick mechanic is something to expand upon. Also: :musical_note: na-nana-na-na-NA-NAAA na-nana-na-na-NA-NAAA :musical_note: :laughing:
PoussRacers by PoussCorp 2020-10-06T06:28:22Z
Very pretty! Not sure what the goal is? If I jump sometimes I fall forever... sometimes I land on the other side... Also this only worked for me on Google Chrome web browser, I got an error when using Safari.
CircleRun by PvPlayz27 2020-10-10T20:25:40Z
I agree with @shaolin-dave and would add that you should try to avoid having different levels of pixelation/resolution/scale for your different assets:
Screen Shot 2020-10-10 at 1.20.22 PM.png
The outer ring appears to be at a different resolution than the inner ring, than the player circle, than the obstacles, than the rubies. Keeping these consistent may take a little extra effort, but can go a long way to make the game feel polished. Good job putting this together! Cheers.
Astro Juice - (DING ESPM-RJ) by Breno Alves 2020-10-10T19:49:18Z
Wow the character is so cute! I think my main complaint is that I felt like I was dying left and right by the smallest rectangular overlap with the blue ice. Instant deaths are not really that fun if you don't give a little bit of fudge room to the player. In the last section, for example, I was the Yellow character trying to reach the end and every time I jumped down I had to land perfectly between the two blocks of ice and very carefully not touch either block or I would have to death cycle to yellow again. I think there are a few approaches to take to improve this: (a) only count the block as touched if the player lands on the top of the block, (b) reduce the size of the hit-box for the block. Also, I wouldn't count death-cycling with Q to get back to the color you need to solve the puzzle (I ended with 74 "deaths", but in reality most of those are death-cycles to get back to the color I needed). Besides that, this is really awesome and worth expanding into a full game! Cheers.
Mouseherd by typeswitch 2020-10-07T03:56:27Z
I was afraid most puzzles were going to be solved by just randomly placing myself in places... but was pleasantly surprised that suddenly the level of complexity ramped up quickly with a few simple elements. Very cute and awesome work! :mouse2: :cheese:
Box Hole by offlebaggins 2020-10-06T15:13:19Z
THIS BOX WILL DESTROY ALL HUMANITY. THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU ARE DOING. :laughing: Simply amazing. I was *this* close to quitting but I am glad I goofed around and found the *you know what*. Cheers.
Shrinking Space by Siddharth 2020-10-06T06:22:42Z
Hmmm it says "Apple macOS" but I only see EXEs in the zip?
