LD44 — Your life is currency

Oligarch by Thirsty 2019-05-02T15:32:42Z

The graphics of the intro sequence are really nice.

But the game itself has some problems.

I'm not really sure what I need to do, the controls are nebulous and the movement is too fast.

SubMoney by hbocao 2019-04-30T17:19:11Z

Awesome!

And now I finally know the name of "Canon in D". Thanks for that alone :)

The passion of a peasant by kuro 2019-05-07T20:21:16Z

I _really_ enjoyed playing! The art style is fitting and the mechanics are challenging.

I couldn't beat the spider nest and had to look in the walkthrough. But all the others I managed after several tries. And it felt really rewarding. Good difficulty!

The story was also awesome and added a lot to the overall game. But for a full length game the dialogs would get a bit annoying i guess. But for this length of a game it was perfect.

It is probably the most enjoyable game from this contest so far for me.

Good work. I very much liked it!

Drytown by DavidPIxel 2019-04-30T16:37:07Z

Awesome in all regards basically. Nice art, witty dialogs and even little puzzles. Sadly I have no speakers on my pc.

But it's not 1bit since the hearts need a third colour :P

Journey Through the Blood Tribe Lands by Kornel 2019-05-01T11:16:50Z

Really liked the concept of the game. And especially the sound sets the modd of the game very nicely

I also felt some balancing problems and almost exclusively used dash/slash and movement.

Tried pushing out once but didn't seem too helpful :)

CandleStickMan by stark 2019-05-01T10:58:29Z

I like the humor and the music selection!

Movement is a little wonky and therefore I needed way to many tries in the first level.

But beating it was rewarding then.

I liked it

Stay alive! by Richard Jedlicka 2019-05-01T11:43:27Z

Very nice idea!

But it seems you can't die if you just smash all the buttons constantly.

Maybe introduce pernalties for too shallow breathing or heart beats.

S.A.S.S. by mcovert 2019-05-01T08:26:15Z

Awesome game! Mood was well done, I really felt like a space pilot. I especially liked the graphics. But the underlying mechanics are also motivating.

Played in fullscreen because in widowed i had problems with my mouse being stuck to always turn left.

Evil Dungeon by Balance686 2019-05-02T16:14:28Z

I agree with the others, that some background music would enhanced the mood quite a lot.

But even without that, it feels like you are really lost in a maze. The hard decisions of stepping through a gate or not helps there.

I like the flashlight idea. After the first level I thought it was quite unnecessary, but with the traps in the second level it really made sense and was very cool.

A running animation would have also been nice ;)

But all in all good work!

LifeCurrencyPlatformer by Quagga 2019-04-30T19:11:25Z

Fun game!

The sticky-to-walls thing felt first extremly weird, then kind of awesome. I completely agree with @t-a-c-commandeur

A life in Far-West by WhoMakeWorse 2019-05-07T19:25:03Z

Mechanics sadly gets old very early. But i think I'm exploiting it a bit.

First run in a big square on the edges of the screen while firing behind you. After 3 rounds, all spearmen are dead.

Then collect all the archers of the level. If you move then they are charging their bows but never actually fire. So always do a step forwards, a step backwards, a step forward and so on while constantly shooting. Than way all enemies are dead and you are still at 100% hp :)

Still played it for a while because the graphics and especially the animations are quite funny and the music was also fitting.

Killing in the name of... by sver 2019-05-02T12:09:08Z

@sver pssst :)

UnderBreak by MlleAB 2019-05-04T17:09:46Z

Everybody told you already, but I guess it doesn't hurt hearing it again: Graphics are really awesome!

I also enjoyed the narrative of the game and the twist at the end. Had to play it actually 3 times, till I realized what leads to the good ending… And I enjoyed it.

But the actual gameplay with the combat is kind of the weak point of the game. Controls are kind of vague and the control corruption later amplifies this even more. Also it seems that you basically can't hide behind obstacles from projectiles.

Still really awesome work from you guys :)

Timing of Ignatius by Danielk 2019-04-30T16:01:26Z

Nice gameplay, but there are some issues that make it rather hard.

First the exit doors aren't visible (i was playing the web version) And secondly the movement gets stuck pretty often (multiple times during a level). Sometimes at the walls and sometimes when enemies push you in front of them.

BraveBelly (Thiccboy hurdle jump sim) no download required by TomasMunro 2019-04-30T17:09:09Z

Really nice art and also fun gameplay. Music could be a bit more energyzing. But I'm complaining at a high level.

Well done!

LD45 — Start with nothing

World Not Found by TheGamer1123211 2019-10-10T18:02:32Z

Somehow the game is unbelievably slow on my machine. In fact even when I switch windows to a different application like the webbrowser this also gets slow. Weird thing is that int only uses 20% of my CPU and memory is also more than 20% left. I have no clue what's going on. Makes it sadly unplayable.

I'm on linux, downloaded the archive, made "404 - World not found - Linux.x86_64" executable and ran that. Was that correct?

Inky escape by egos 2019-10-12T15:30:45Z

also managed to level 14. Quite a small but fun game.

The focus splitting between both minigames was a nice challenge.

Also nice soundtrack

nice entry :)

On a side note, I also thought first that I have to press b tree times and so on. Took me a while to get it right.

Snake Farmer by sorecactus 2019-10-08T19:59:43Z

Nice idea, but kind of buggy.

It's fun but after 10 snakes I got tired and sold my snake. Wonder how you could make the fun last longer.

Great submission nevertheless :)

N O T H I N G by revx 2019-10-10T18:53:15Z

Sadly couldn't get pass the bars. Not being a native speaker is a disadvantage I guess, but it was a lot of fun so far.

It's a nice concept with a cool execution.

It was not obvious to submit an answer by moving forward. I was already questioning my sanity with the first puzzle :D

Keep It That Way by Berkin 2019-10-09T19:28:30Z

I love the idea!

Already chuckled in the main menu.

Also the game mechanics are awesome and I would definitely can see this going somewhere.

The implementation feels a bit buggy and too unforgiving. Often I fail without knowing what's wrong. Also a lot of game overs directly 0,5 seconds after spawning.

A little music and sound effects would have made the game even better.

A very cool concept you came up with :)

Epic story of a nobody by The Osk 2019-10-10T16:34:45Z

I liked the art style very much. If there would have been more screens like the bandit vs trader, it would have been even better.

The dialogs and the fighting was also pretty funny. The fighting got a little repetitive but for the length of the game it was still bearable.

I definitely enjoyed playing! Good job

EVOLVE by Carpin 2019-10-12T15:46:00Z

At first it was a little confusing what should actually happen (didn't find the big paper money button..) After realizing this, it got a little repetitive fairly quick. Just clicking the three building types sequentially for each field. A little more variation would have been nice.

I liked the relaxing soundtrack though! Also the end-screen was a pleasant surprise. I'd like more games having something like this :)

Good entry!

No pants Wizard by agar3s 2019-10-08T19:12:00Z

Oh boy, I spent way much more time with this game than I'd like to admit :D

The mini game weren't exactly new, but very well interpreted with the somewhat insane graphics!

I liked it a lot and had fun. Great game very well executed. Kudos

"I wish the interlude with no pants hero was a tad shorter or skippable, it makes losing very bitter." +1

Keyz Goblin by TheWustache 2019-10-08T22:17:23Z

Awesome concept! It's a similar feeling to these games where the letters 'red' are in blue ink and you have to say blue and don't get confused.

I liked it very much.

very hard difficulty though

Still beat it, hehe

To the people that got stuck, did you try walking through the end of the screen? You get moved to the other side

VaultSmith by DigitalLimestone 2019-10-08T20:36:28Z

Nice little game.

Maybe some story would have been nice.

The crafting system is very cool, the fighting coul dneed some polishing but in general is also fairly nice when you get used to it. Nice game!

adventure again by gamefive 2019-10-08T18:37:03Z

The art idea is really awesome and worth to further explore I'd say! With that being said, the assets in the game could have used just a little bit of post-processing (little white dot at the corners and lightness differences where two pieces are put together for example).

Controls are indeed somewhat wonky and I feel that a little background music could have improved the game a lot.

Some levels felt like they stop in the middle and the last one I did several times until I realized this was the last one. So some kind of goal indication would have been nice.

But all in all a solid entry with a really awesome graphics idea :)

VoidTech by loganthemanster 2019-10-08T18:26:50Z

On the abrupt ending: While that's definitely correct, it's still worth to explore the ship a bit before you go to bed ;) @tomfu @itsdanidre

@adam-konig Very fair point with the text triggers. We started a little to late rounding out these little edges :D

@pierallard I think you've reached all the content we've managed to implement. In the end we needed to curtail the story a bit because of time pressure. Thanks for the feedback :)

And sorry for the maybe a bit too slow space-suit movement. I guess that's my fault :D

Thanks a lot for all the critiques so far!

Biohazard-XX by hiro.e 2019-10-08T19:40:39Z

Cool graphics and sounds that form a nice atmosphere together.

Game concept is nice, but indeed too hard. See-, hear- range or Uarrg-Indicator would have helped.

Also if you go the doors backwards, they are wrongly linked. You actually get moved to far back, which was annoying.

I did the three rooms north where you could go through the walls, then to the next one south, but then got stuck… I want to know how it ends though!

Scrawl A Draw by rdcooper 2019-10-09T12:31:05Z

The music was really awesome!

The game itself would have been a much more relaxing and pleasant experience, if the cursor did drew the whole time. But as already mentioned by other people it didn't do that quite often which is quite frustrating.

After a minute I stopped drawing and just listened to the music (still doing while writing the review :D)

The music is definitely the highlight.

Btw: On my german keyboard the z and x keys are actually quite far away from each other which did make it even a bit more awkward for me ;)

Start With Rain by Piturnah 2019-10-10T18:25:18Z

Is there an end screen? I need to know it! :D

I liked the game very much, very addicting. Graphics and sound were super awesome. The desert could be a bit more interesting, but that's all I can critique. (Coincidently I'm reading Dune right now)

The Seven by Torami 2019-10-09T18:28:22Z

First thought was that the running animation is ultra nice. I really like that he looks like he's running full speed. It's a shame that we don't have a longer platform to just run along in order to enjoy the animation. I just had a look at it at the first platform but during the game I was to occupied with other stuff.

I feel like max 4 colours would have been way better.

But I really like the core idea of the game. Worth exploring further.

And I like the options in the main menu :D

It never started with nothing by Lukvasando 2019-10-09T18:11:56Z

Neat game with good mechanics and very nice audio!

I feel that the mechanics with building blocks right before you stand on them great. It has potential, but needs a little more polishing. Sometime the wrong block materialized and it was a little to slow.

But nevertheless the game has a nice atmosphere and the graphics are also quite cool and fitting

Big Brain Boy: An Intellectual Odyssey (now with GALAXY EDITION) by Alex Weiser 2019-10-10T13:46:29Z

I also got stuck at nasa with the floating gummy bear and a non-interactive guy.

The game has very nice idea and I really like the walking animation from the beginning till you got smarter. Also the Q&A while doing the shooting game was surprisingly fun.

Criqiue: - I didn't really now what actually changed while getting smarter (except the walking animation) - Ending is probably not real ending but just a bug - No sounds in the non-shooting parts

Are there actual short and correct answers to the last questions in the shooting game?..

Overall very nice idea and so far the best take on the actual theme I've seen :)

Caravan Wars by LeGoLaZ 2019-10-08T20:51:41Z

Solid game!

I like the graphics and especially the title screen.

The game can get a little hectic but is fun.

It was actually pretty easy by just spamming space and clicks to spawn warriors. I wonder how you could make it a bit more challenging.

Good submission!

Sweet Baby Boi by Phing 2020-04-21T17:04:22Z

Oh man, i just wanted to say that the graphics are crazy good. However the game itself is quite disgusting.

So the plan has probably worked out!

Saving Emperor's Chick by Calcitherin 2020-04-23T21:42:08Z

I'm not sure if I got I right, but it appears that the game is only ~10 seconds long. When saving the penguin from the one bird I immediately win.

This aside, I have to say that the graphics are very cool and quite cute. Some music would have been nice. Not entirely sure what else I could review :)

For Ducks' Sake by GaryS 2020-04-27T10:30:40Z

Very awesome game!

The only thing I can think of as an improvement is a bit more atmosphere and story.

Homelette by Blix 2020-04-21T09:13:02Z

When the game first started and I heard the music I had a big smile. For some reason it fits very nicely. Graphics also look quite cool.

I couldn't play very far sadly, since the controls are just not working on my laptop with a trackpoint. The camera move way to fast when I touched it.

Exo Keeper by amarillion 2020-04-29T19:51:00Z

An exceptional entry you've got there!

The concept is just awesome.

Species 5 and 7 really got along together in my game. They dominated the ecosystem and spread wildly.

Room for improvement is definitely on user guidance. Everything is just overwhelming the whole time. Even though there are just 3 clickable things and one of them is the info-button :D There appears to be so much going on the screen that it constantly feels that you are not in control. A tiny thing that would help a lot is a small up or down arrow in which direction the parameters on the right are in-/decreasing.

The music was very fitting and relaxing. The graphics of the individual microbes were cute and fitting. The planet itself hurt a little in the eyes though, because of the very hard differences between and the colourfulness of tiles.

Other remarks: - the info button hangs quite often - on my small laptop screen the info box was hard to read. Switching to a monitor with more vertical space resolved the issue

btw: now that I'm writing this comment I see the explanatory video you made. That helps a lot!

Wandering Star by twigames 2020-04-23T21:20:30Z

The art deco art style is really something. I very much liked it (5/5).

The gameplay itself wasn't that revolutionizing sadly. And for some reason my star was always shrinking and not really expanding no matter how many star I've eaten.

YMGYPBVF: You Must Gather Your Party Before Venturing Forth by amkingTRP 2020-04-21T08:42:13Z

Very engaging and nicely balanced. Feels really rewarding to figure out the levels.

Overall very nice, even though soundeffects and graphics could be a little more atmospheric.

great job!

Billy 335 the Bot by suika343 2020-04-21T09:18:21Z

Awesome entry!

The game mechanics are new to me and very engaging. It got tough very fast though. Maybe add some shortcuts like changing direction while hovering and arrow keys.

Graphics are fitting and the sound is very atmospheric.

Don't have anything to complain :)

Green Dream by Trusty 2020-04-21T16:34:19Z

The concept is really simply and in the beginning it looks trivial, but quickly it gets quite hard to balance all factors.

Controls felt a bit confusing. I always confused push left and right because

@saeedprez that might be. The moral here is probably: Don't have four separate dates on one night :D

Ark Survive by Pusheeneiro 2020-04-23T21:33:03Z

I like the setting very much. Also graphics are really nice as well as the music (with the latter becoming a little repetetive over time).

The one problem I had with the game is the gameplay itself. I didn't really get what I was supposed to do. The choices, while funny, felt very random. In the end I failed my way through and learned the answers where I wasn't dieing by heart.

In the end I still enjoyed the ride because of the nice humour :)

Someone called for an ambulance? by Bauke Regnerus 2020-04-21T15:38:21Z

Very cool entry!

At first I thought the controls are a little wonky, but after some time I got a hold of it. Then it felt really awesome racing though the city, jumping from the highway down to the streets and sliding around corners.

Music was neat and reminded me of theme hospital.

Room for improvement could be sound effects and somewhat funnier symptoms of the patients.

Crazy mechanism by lefou1234567 2020-04-24T23:14:41Z

Definitely has potential!

Of course it is a little rudimentary without sound and everything, but the core gameplay was fun.

I needed a few tries until I knew what I need to do. So a little explanation would have been nice as well.

Heart Combustion by Head Tilt Games 2020-04-21T08:53:32Z

The idea is super awesome!

And the tutorial gave me more than a little portal vibe.

Graphics are very nice (even though a little demanding for my laptop).

Sadly the game crashes quite often so I gave up after 3 minutes of playtime.

The idea is definitely worth exploring more :)

Now That's A Cool Sun by Raxe612 2020-04-21T15:23:06Z

The game idea is very original and nice!

I played it under wine and had some graphic and audio issues: background sound was somehow grating and the health bar of the planet was right in the middle of the screen (above the sun and everything). But no point reduction for that since it was made for windows.

also like the humour of the game.

All in all very good entry. Keep up the work :)

Planet Alerino by Marino 2020-04-21T09:10:03Z

Played it through!

I like mouse + keyboard controls.

Just from the game, I didn't know what's my objective (what to keep alive). I even thought, that the enemies are somehow feeding that plant which they were gathering around. In the end I found out, that they are trying to destroy it and I helped it grow :D

Could be a bit atmospheric.

Also a little to easy.

ah, the big health bar on top was empty right form the start throughout the whole playthrough. I guess this was a bug?

Solid entry all in all!

Unique idea!

Hyperloop by very dark lord 2021-06-06T21:13:52Z

First and foremost: Brilliant atmosphere.

I did not expect a horror game until I stumbled over the corpse, which really set the mood. The first enemy encounter gave me a legitimate scare.

The pixel art was nice, but the visual and especially sound effects made the game.

The song at the end was beautiful as well.

Also, I liked that the way back was shortened, if you move into the wrong direction at the start. IMHO better than an arbitrary barrier of some sort.

Turret Bug by kaeveris 2020-10-11T09:07:34Z

Got a bit it too repetitive and dull quite fast.

Also the shooting sound effect was really annoying over time.

But the game itself was fun for a bit.

Art was not fancy but did its job :)

Shovel is just Love Spelled Backwards by very dark lord 2021-06-06T20:44:00Z

I just played through the whole thing including bonus levels. Definitely engaging

+ the destructible surroundings and especially the particle/fluid physics were remarkable and definitely a surprise for a 72h game - except the occasional lava flowing upwards, it worked pretty damn well + nice intro and cutscenes. The initial car scene with the guitar soundtrack reminded me somewhat of borderlands + the music was very nice, but didn't fit so well to the slow digging. A little tweaking here would have had a big impact + I really dug the art style! + Had a good laugh at the ending

Great entry!

Waiter, please! by Yamzho 2021-10-06T17:23:41Z

Very novel idea!

I really liked the center of gravity thingy and the overall concept of the game. Sounds would have been awesome for the mood.

I didn't get though, if it is beneficial if you have multiple orders on the same plate. It felt like this is what I should be doing and have a full balanced plate, but after all there was no obvious advantages of that, to doing them all sequentially.

Loved the tutorial art work!

Router Runner by JustinMullin 2021-10-06T16:06:50Z

Small little puzzle game!

Even without a tutorial, it was easy to grasp what is demanded from the player. The clear signs and labelling without words did a great job.

I especially liked the graphics. The lighter and darker color animation on the player was nice, as well as the playfield itself.

Actually there is not much to critisise. Well executed!

If I would need to nag about one thing then that there is not much of a big surprise, wow factor or something that made you chuckle. The game was not boring, but also not exciting, if you know what I mean.

Hikari’s Journey 光の旅 — the umbral world by Junber 2021-10-12T21:37:32Z

After playing, I was speechless for a while.

Writing, Graphics, Music, Game design were all absolutely extraordinary. Even though the writing and story development was sticking out especially.

It was an emotional experience, and I'm glad for the uplifting and encouraging ending. Some of Hikari's thoughts definitely hit home.

The scope of the content felt several entries worth, and how you tangled them all together to a harmonious and cohesive experience was impressive. When the flat 2D world was suddenly three-dimensional, I had the biggest smile on my face. Very nice effect! I liked the puzzles, which would have already received good ratings from me as their own game.

All in all, this is the most remarkable entry I've played so far.

Thanks for the experience. You did very well!

To improve: In the last (FPS like) 3D environment, I couldn't pan the camera. The only interaction I could do was movement with wasd. I'm not sure if this was intentional, it didn't feel like it, since I couldn't really explore the levels as much as I'd liked.

Hikari’s Journey 光の旅 — the umbral world by Junber 2021-10-13T07:33:17Z

@junber I'm on Ubuntu 20.04 with Firefox 93.

I'm not sure if it was possible in the third person 3d part. I definitely didn't do it there as well :D But I also wasn't expecting it there. Would you happen to have a direct link to that section? Then I could try.

Kaboom Box by kleinzach 2021-10-16T23:45:33Z

I really enjoyed the feeling of turning this small box "in my hands" around to look at it from all sides to solve the problem. You conveyed that very well.

The sounds do the job, but a little bit of tense music would have been the icing on the cake.

Nevertheless, very interesting submission, even more impressive since you did it alone.

Nails, the great genius by Vivoubos 2021-10-09T19:29:10Z

Meow!

I really enjoy handmade rough sfx, so good job there :) The actual gameplay was very enjoyable, and I wasn't bored for a minute. I didn't feel that my robot companion did any damage to the enemies, though.

I'm still wondering what's the backstory about the end boss' name.

StackItToSpace by Sarah 2021-10-17T08:47:27Z

Great concept!

I especially liked turning objects into the right orientation by dropping them in juust the right spot.

Cleaning out the space in the beginning of every level, to get a stable basis was a little annoying.

Great job!

O'Ryan by James Dunlap 2021-10-10T16:42:26Z

The scale of the game is really impressive!

Also, the pixel-art especially of the protagonist is the best I have seen so far on the jam. Congratulations.

To improve: - I didn't feel very informed what's the general setting of the game and what my objectives are - The levels felt a bit empty and clean - The controls were sometimes a bit wonky. Jumping in general didn't respond as I would have liked. Aiming was alos though and did often not what I wanted. - I frequently jumped into walls. And sometimes I could not free myself without hitting F1. Especially this part of the level was notorious for that. Almost every jump can lead to being stuck here. scrot_2021-10-10_18-40-14_screenshot.png

I'm a bit torn. Art, music, scope and atmosphere are superb. But the core mechanics need some polishing as they do not work as smooth as they should.

Unstable Gamble by rzfmzn 2021-10-07T21:49:45Z

The music was awesome!

The gameplay was not up to that. I didn't feel (and I think was) in control of anything.

Balkanization 1 by kr4ft3r 2021-10-09T20:25:16Z

> Republic of Serbian Krajina achieves income of 400 DEM and joins the EU!

Honestly, I didn't fully grasp what the winning conditions are. Also, you can only attack your neighbours, right? In my game, there were two or three with big militaries stomping everyone else. And we could not really attack each other, I think. The balance and game mechanic could improve a bit in that regard.

Still, the pace of the game was very nice and I enjoyed the text only history log. I also enjoyed the humour, even though I probably didn't get half of the jokes.

Solid entry!

COME ALIVE! by Angela He 2021-10-12T20:05:17Z

I'm having technical problems on Linux.

The first time I tried to play, I clicked on start game, then I got the sensitive content warning, but the ok button did not react. I could tab to it and it got red, but clicking it did not have any effect.

Then I restarted the game and now I have the same problem with the start game button. I can hover over it, but clicking it does not bring me to the game. The button has a short animation, but no effect. The settings menu, about and quit buttons work as excepted.

The stdout does not show any log entries.

Any ideas? I'd really like to try it out :)

Escape from Space by Xwilarg 2021-10-09T21:47:40Z

First, I really adored the graphics. They were very impressive and created a nice atmosphere.

On the actual gameplay I'm a bit torn, I think there is a solid foundation, but it was hard for me to identify it. I felt a little lost through all the numbers and stats on the screen, so that I didn't really have a good overview about consequences of my actions.

And what was the gallery menu entry for? It stayed greyed out.

My highscore was 4500.

Unstable Gravity by EasyLuckyGem 2021-10-17T08:56:48Z

Great game!

But super hard. I didn't manage to beat the second level, despite being in on one digit timer values three times :D

The dramatic piano music was very fitting!

Makes you really appreciate the terrific job our real sun does, day after day!

H2G0 by HarveyU 2021-10-16T23:35:12Z

I very much enjoy the aesthetics. The graphics were simple but quite elegant. Especially the main character and the umbrella. The fire enemies not so much, but they did the job.

The umbrella mechanic was cool and sliding downhill was super fun.

A music track and sound effects for the clattering rain would have been very nice to improve the atmosphere even more.

My highscore was 761m

Great submission!

Glown-Up by very dark lord 2021-10-07T11:26:57Z

I made it to day 31. Awesome concept:)

It was very engaging, that I was on the verge of losing for basically the whole time. No time to breath. And I failed in the end when a mad co-worker just carried me around for too long.

When the first guy just randomly threw his co-worker carrying a barrel into the reactor, I genuinely laughed out loud :D In general the quirkiness of the always busy co-workers around me really made the game.

I didn't buy many upgrades, since money did not really pile up for some reason… Would have really liked to see how jumping with strong legs looks like!

The music was really cool, but I feel like you could have gone more overboard with the sound effects. For the co-workers, but especially for the emergency situations of the reactor.

The main graphics are nice to look at and do their job. But I want to single out the mountainous background. It is really beautiful, especially with the parallax effect.

A few notes: - you can throw barrels on top of the reactor building, and they disappear (?). Might be a shortcut for waste clean-up. - I was very disappointed that I couldn't just dump the atomic waste into the water. I thought that is how it's done!? - in my first try, I though the underground waste storage is the reactor, because I didn't explore the map to the left. Maybe a subtle help like a road sign at the start would have been good to direct the player in the correct direction

Council of Emotions by squirmonkey 2021-10-09T19:48:48Z

Fascinating submission! I don't think I have ever played something similar.

The graphics were very fitting and cute. The music was doing its supportive role as well. I also have to mention the very good tutorial. It's not fancy but does the job very good.

While the mechanics are interesting and novel, I don't think I would play a full-fledged game about it. But that is totally fine. Exploring ideas is the whole point of this competition.

Great job!

My highscore after three game was 640.

Tipsy by Trusty 2021-10-09T19:17:06Z

Sadly I had technical issues (on linux).

After the unity loading screen I saw the main menu for two seconds or so and then the screen stayed black. The music continues but sounds kind of like underwater.

HUN'S TABLE by thunderkerrigan 2021-10-09T19:09:28Z

I had some technical issues with the mobile website on my android phone. On Firefox, the game was stuck on the initial loading screen and refreshed the page automatically after a short while which restarted the loading over and over again On Chrome, I got a "WebGL context lost, please refresh the tab" popup after the initial loading. I was left there with a black screen and the background music(which also had some audio artefacts)

PolitiGod by Nakami 2021-10-09T21:14:17Z

The actual gameplay was fun, but I felt a bit overwhelmed by the many adjusting screw I could influence. Also, it was quite stressful staying informed on the current stats while adjusting things on a different tab, while the timer was ticking merciless.

A music track would have been nice :)

I loved the graphics, everything was fitting in the same style! Especially the buildings looked really stunning.

Good job!

Erratic Equine Extraction by hwaet 2021-10-10T15:57:47Z

The game feels cohesive and music, graphics and type of gameplay work really well together. I'm not sure about the physics of moving hay when moving the horse, but yeah:D

The cow is a little buggy, when you move it out of the stable, the screen gets super zoomed out and you can go places with her.

I appreciate, that you crafted a lot of levels, something that gets often neglected in game jams. The music was also well done.

The un-stable pun is really a work of art.

nice entry!

Oh, the eye movement of the horse was quite cool as well

Mysterious Mine by TheGamerASD 2021-10-07T21:38:24Z

You create a very scary environment with very little components. Well done!

The actual gameplay was secondary and that is fine.

I would have loved to see what happens after finding all 7 switches.

Labarnas — A narrative board game in ancient times by SimonL 2021-10-07T10:30:18Z

Thank you @void4 for the very insightful comment!

Your balance experience matches quite nicely with what I was going for. In the end, demise is what ultimately happened in reality, and I wanted to make survival an accomplishment. One that maybe invites the player to wander in alternative history thoughts, where the Hittites continued to shape the greater region for another thousand years.

On another not, I released yesterday evening a post-jam updated version. The map art got an update and is now hopefully a bit less cluttered and more visually appealing. Based on your comment, I also added an additional sentence to the Feast of the Gods explanation, replaced the formulas with prose and corrected the typo.

Thanks again. It feels great to know that someone played it multiple times and actually felt the crumbling empire feel I was heading for.

Labarnas — A narrative board game in ancient times by SimonL 2021-10-08T07:54:16Z

@frozenfire92 The first commenter here played the game in Gimp (any image manipulation software should work) by copy-pasting tokens to the map. Pretty neat idea that might help if there is no printer nearby.

@ninjacreeper47, thank you very much for the detailed comment! I'm glad that the crumbling empire feel came across in your first game. Your strategy looks interesting. It is definitely not intended that one worker in Hatti is optimal. A nick pit though: In the civil uprising, it says "Lose half of your farmers rounded down, but at least one.", so you won't be invincible to them. With your event distribution (2 on famine and 2 on the Assyrians), you should have a 37.5% chance to gain a worker (12 prosperous year) and a 34.4% chance of losing one worker (6 famine, 3 civil uprising and 2 volcano). Together with the odd roll of a 6 from the Sea People or the Assyrians it should be in the range of 1:1 with the danger of losing also soldiers if you're unlucky. It all depends of course on which events are still to come.

Your thoughts on Nuhašše are interesting as well. My idea why players would want to defend this territory was to have a buffer zone to the Assyrians (what it kind of was for long periods historically, mainly to the Egyptians though). Giving the Assyrians Nuhašše for free makes them only two good roles away from occupying Hatti and ending the game. Very cool to see you going a different route. Also, not every real Labarna paid much attention to the southern territories.

I'm still not sure if the incentives for having more farmers are enough, you certainly gave me food for, though! :)

Thanks for playing!

Labarnas — A narrative board game in ancient times by SimonL 2021-10-09T20:45:26Z

@mediflect, thank you for the insights!

While play testing myself, I didn't count a weak indicator on Nuhašše when the Assyrians attacked from Kizzuwatna. But that wasn't really a considered decision. I'll think about it and will make the rules on it a bit clearer. It's not well specified there. Glad that it didn't have an effect on you :D

Labarnas — A narrative board game in ancient times by SimonL 2021-10-10T10:32:52Z

@yellowkamel Wow, I didn't even think about that. Many thanks for the effort! I added the workshop link to the description if you don't mind. I tried it out and it seems to work nicely.

@playerdeer Alternatively you can check out the Table Top Simulator link form @yellowkamel (I added it to the description as well).

Thanks for playing :)

Labarnas — A narrative board game in ancient times by SimonL 2021-10-20T08:36:02Z

@very-dark-lord, thanks a lot for the thoughtful review!

That the design is prone to the extremes, early defeats and exploding population, was one of my main worries from early on. Luckily, most of the games during late play-testing turned out pretty balanced, as in, still losing but on the last third of the event deck without crazy worker amounts. But as you've experienced, it happens more often than I'd like.

The plan was that a competent player will roughly win every third or fourth game. The real Hittites ultimately crumbled as well and winning should be the accomplished exception.

I decided against being able to push back the Assyrians, mostly because I didn't want to add another mechanic and because it was so much out of the question in reality. But maybe that is an interesting idea for a "diplomacy" expansion…

But so much for excuses!

Giving the player more leverage to recover from weak states is definitely something to improve. Same with the swinginess of certain events. Thanks for the food for though :)

Somehow in game jams I always spent too less time actually playing the game :D (even though I did better this time than before)

btw: Did you play the jam version or the updated one?

Russian Connect by YellowKamel 2021-10-10T10:50:00Z

Amazing idea and a splendid execution!

The game loop was very simple, but it was enjoyable to play and not boring in the slightest. Mainly because the dialogue was well written (and I just finished a game of Twilight Struggle yesterday, so I'm in the theme :D).

The core mechanic was very stable and there was not a single point where audio was not synchronized with the text. I always had problems with these kinds of things, so…

Very well done!

Three Miles High by avareii 2021-10-10T11:05:20Z

Very interesting idea!

Combining a stacking game with balancing all the necessary parts was fun. The music was fitting, and I love the jab at Three mile island in the title.

To improve - Accidentally touching your pile with a new tile made the whole thing collapse and ends always in a catastrophe. Maybe that's part of the fun, though :D - The text was not really readable, since there was soo much stuff going on at the same time.

Great submission!

Bullet Balance by Robonaut121 2021-10-06T17:06:38Z

Awesome concept!

I especially enjoyed the balance aspect. Wouldn't mind if that part would have been explored a little more instead of the bullets. Nevertheless, it was a very nice game.

A bit of music and sound effects would have been really awesome. Especially for this kind of game.

After getting a hang of it, the balancing is actually quite nice. At first I thought it was too hard. The fast projectiles that split in 3 are still almost always an instant kill.

Magic Knight Out!!! by Jahwffrey 2021-10-09T00:50:45Z

Very interesting submission!

Especially the graphics stood out. I assume the enemies and background figures are the developers? Great idea! The intro dialogue visuals (parrot and castle) were pretty nice. I even took a screenshot of it.

On the negative side, the animations were too choppy and made me feel a little uncomfortable. A few extra frames would have been nice :D Also, I felt that the animations made the game harder than the actual difficulty was.

Anyway, all in all a very nice entry with awesome humour.

Background music was also enjoyable and fitting.

Variable Volatility by Kimbsy 2021-10-09T21:28:19Z

Under linux, the game crashed after a while with

> Exception in :draw function: #error { > :cause line with format PCM_SIGNED 44100.0 Hz, 16 bit, mono, 2 bytes/frame, little-endian not supported. > :via > [{:type javax.sound.sampled.LineUnavailableException > :message line with format PCM_SIGNED 44100.0 Hz, 16 bit, mono, 2 bytes/frame, little-endian not supported. > :at [com.sun.media.sound.DirectAudioDevice$DirectDL implOpen DirectAudioDevice.java 484]}] > :trace > [[com.sun.media.sound.DirectAudioDevice$DirectDL implOpen DirectAudioDevice.java 484] > [com.sun.media.sound.DirectAudioDevice$DirectClip implOpen DirectAudioDevice.java 1241]

Nevertheless, I think I experienced the whole game. The core game loop was very simple but enjoyable and challenging (what do you want more?). Keybindings were a little awkward and it would have made it easier if temperature were two keys on the left and the PH stuff two keys on the right. But actually the current ones worked as well and having fingers crossed on the keyboard was kind of fun.

The tutorial was very nice and felt really polished.

Also, the music choice was superb.

Great submission!

Swerve by IC Rainbow 2021-10-10T11:20:44Z

Really cool entry!

My first few tries, I flew off into space. Eventually I realized that the distance to the goal is increasing instead of decreasing. You can go to pretty high speeds there, and I think I eventually didn't see any attractor objects any more.

The music was very fitting for the space theme and also fitting to the pacing of the game.

The high-score system deserves extra praise.

Things to improve: - I still don't know what the radiation thingy is for - I realized far too late, that the purple line is not the "ideal racing line" but more my trajectory which I can influence, doh! - I think the boost power ups distract a little from the more interesting mechanic of gaining speed by doing close flybys on planets. That could have been explored more

All in all, I really like it!

Funstable by emk4 2021-10-09T22:14:59Z

Very interesting submission. I'm impressed by the size of the world, with all the little buildings and town people. Very impressive for one weekend.

Graphics are really cool and the music does a good job as well.

I also got stuck on a ladder and couldn't rescue myself.

Milburt by LiquidFunk 2021-10-09T22:33:38Z

Very cool example of interactive fiction.

I liked the font effects, but agree with another comment, that some letters are hard to read. Graphics in general were very cool and were consistent in a style.

It also wasn't immediately clear how to navigate within the dialogues.

I enjoyed the humour and chuckled in multiple occasions.

Nice job!

Howard by benjamin nielsen 2021-10-16T23:23:53Z

I think the game has a good premise and the mechanic has potential. But in the current state it is hard to play. Howard moves very fiddly and the island gets stuck in weird positions more often than not.

I liked the music track and the sound effects.

With a little bin more polishing, like streamlining the controls and having an actual objective, the game would be even better.

GROUDOU! by Chacawott 2021-10-12T18:41:12Z

The game was a round package, the music was not bad, the graphics were not bad, the game mechanics were not bad as well. But on the other hand were all sections not exceptional either.

You did well on the balancing though, the game felt challenging and got even more, the further one progressed.

All in all, I'd say solid submission :)

Sliced Ice by Void4 2021-10-07T10:45:57Z

The game has a nice idea behind it and was fun to play. Went to up to level 7.

Being a traffic cone with ice skates on my …feet, fighting robots with my free skating dance choreography is definitely a setting that I haven't seen yet!

A few points to improve - I was skating for several minutes in the first level until I realized that the gate is already open. I expected the actual gate to lift. - The skating felt a little slow or dragging. It might be more realistic as you have it, but a faster pace could have been more fun maybe - a simple music would have gone a long way. Especially a slow waltz or so. (I somehow have the dancy figureskater image in my head…)

Unstable Situation by KeichiTS 2021-10-10T15:30:13Z

I loved the CRT optics and the music. The game had a very cohesive atmosphere in general. I actually enjoyed the game mechanics where you make a tiny progress and start again at the beginning over an over.

For improvement, I can only mention the jump sound which was always a little late.

Awesome submission!

Edit: I forgot the most important part: I genuinely had fun playing!

Proximity War by Ravenmages 2021-10-09T10:16:47Z

Oh man, the actual game loop is very enjoyable and challenging. I can totally see myself playing this system more. The fast-paced system is very engaging.

But there are some issues with the user interface that make it very hard in the current state. The screen does not scale up if you increase the window size. The resolution could stay the same, but it should at least up scale. And because it is just this tiny window, scrolling the map is way too fiddly. Actually, map scrolling felt like the limiting factor in my playthroughs. Also, there were some grey artifacts on the map which fooled me several times, because I thought they were mines, but when coming closer, they disappeared.

The controls were not obvious from just jumping in the game, but after reading the instructions it all worked out pretty nicely.

Great entry with lots of potential!

Why-Fi by Chargrills21 2021-10-17T08:38:57Z

Okay, at first I thought the game was way too hard. Spend over a minute to get through the first two jumps (to the right). But after a while I got the hang of it and learned how to wall jump. The mechanics work quite nicely. Except some minor edge cases (when running over a ledge while wanting to jump), the controls feel very good.

To improve: - A soundtrack would have made the game ;) - Sprite/animation of the protagonist could have been more interesting.

Great job!

My highscore was 484.

Realignment by Mediflect 2021-10-07T20:49:39Z

Super interesting game!

Firstly, the dialogs are superb and really make the game. I played it twice through to get both endings and really enjoyed the process.

I felt really immerged by the text only screens, they worked really well. The sound component was a nice touch, but I relied mostly on the background color to solve the riddles. Could have been further explored maybe.

I also saw an egg and a red body.

Well done!

Witch Season by winded_blues 2021-10-12T19:56:35Z

The concept of season change is very cool and one can get a glimpse of it when walking over the frozen water in winter. There is lots of potential in it.

LD55 — Summoning

BLOOD WRITES by jelch 2024-04-18T16:10:23Z

I had a bit of trouble with feedback. I got stuck in the level that looks like a colon and somehow did not advance even though I was pretty happy with my drawing, It would be nice to get a little bit more feedback what went wrong in the drawing. Also it would be nice to get more of a sense of progress when completing a level. What did I summon? Why should I continue? and things like that.

Nevertheless, the game creates a nice & eery atmosphere with the graphics and the music.

Thanks for the submission!

Demons stole my stuff by Zirrrus 2024-04-16T18:55:30Z

The highlight of the game were the funny texts. I liked the principle game mechanic and it got me thinking quite hard actually.

Unfortunately I didn't make it past the pizza level. I'd gladly take a hint for that one and continue playing the other levels

I agree with the other comment, that music or some sound effects would have really benefitted the mood

The visuals were good. I like the color choice of the summoning circle.

Veiled Ocean: Echoes of Nautical Grief by WiredOverload 2024-04-16T16:52:32Z

I really liked the art of the characters. Those were really beautiful. Also the water was very pretty.

The principal mechanic of drawing your spell in order to cast was nice, but in practise it didn't land so well, since you could not really do it mid level because everything is flying at you.

Thanks for the submission!

The Demon Ate My Homework by very dark lord 2024-04-17T13:20:37Z

Thank you for the great submission!

The gameplay was interesting enough, the graphics were good, the music supportive, but the stand-out aspect of the game was definitely the cut scenes. Their writing was humorous, the camera zoom hilarious and the voice acting the icing on the cake.

Other things I thoroughly enjoyed were the nice soundeffects in the summoning minigame, the end-scene picture and the lisp of the teacher character.

Really nice experience playing the game!

Tower Of Madness by Chiara Sanviti 2024-04-16T19:18:08Z

I liked this entry a lot!

The graphics are awesome and look very polished. The music was nice. But the best aspect (and a surprise for me) was the game mechanics. I very much enjoyed it and played multiple rounds. It was an engaging puzzle with multiple dimensions. Blood, the demon count meter, the rooms, the random events, the key combinations and trying to find the perfect timespot where to stop buying monsters for the engine and sit back and generate blood for the end score.

I had a blast, and will send the link to my nephew. He would enjoy it as well.

Thanks for the entry!

LD57 — Depths

Archeologic by auxC 2025-04-08T06:33:34Z

An absolutely great game on all accords.

The graphics are really nice. Well done. Music is top notch as well. And the gameplay is new to me.

After my first 3 plays I thought it was basically impossible to win. But then I got a lucky bomb streak and finally beat the game.

To improve for me would be that towards the end it gets quite chaotic (a little bit too much for my taste). One does not really understand anymore what is going on with bombs exploding, the limited space and the many block types that make it really hard to make any sensible move.

Generally I would experiment with a simpler level. With the current one, one gets easily into a place where one does not understand anymore what is going on, as you can't see all the blocks anymore in the 3D space. For long term engagement I'd like a bit more 'control' over what is happening.

I'm actually thinking of downloading the audio file for the victory track. It's really nice!

scrot_2025-04-08_08-28-39_screenshot.png

Note: I had some technical problems. In firefox it absolutely broke my window management. I had to kill firefox to get control over the system again. Then I used chromium and it worked just fine. Not sure what that was about

Pressure of the Depths by slay a stone 2025-04-10T06:29:24Z

I didn't expect the minigames. Felt a bit like a mix between jumpnrun and among us.

At first I struggled quite a lot, as I was buying the laser towers. When switching to rocket towers it suddenly got quite easy. Mostly I could build rocket towers as fast as I could click. Which indicates a bit more work in terms of balancing.

Nevertheless I still had fun playing and watching hundreds of rockets annihilating all enemies after a few steps.

Also I could see some electronic music going nicely with it.

Awesome entry!

Especially the first level without diving was a work of art. Music was perfectly building up perfectly with the gameplay. In the further levels music was nice too, but the first one was really standing out!

Outstanding entry. The music paired with some of the texts (the letter) hit quite hard.

Very strong on mood this one!

The OPERATOR by Tomtomgome 2025-04-08T22:40:38Z

Outstanding!

This was by far the best game I've encountered so far.

The mood was excellent. I really felt like an anonymous operator, in charge of those poor souls. I started to care for them. Was agitated when something bad happened to them and everything.

I think it strikes a very narrow balance of letting the player figuring everything out themselves. It gave enough guidance without handholding. Felt very rewarding.

The sticker idea was also excellent. It gave you all the controls and info that you need, without being an actual UI-UI. All in game

The only improvement idea I have is to add some music.

Well done!

(The end caught me by surprise! Even though it's probably obvious from the start coming to think of it)

Frantic Focus by krummja 2025-04-09T07:35:32Z

Nice game that actually feels finished! The water level was a little bit laggy. And it was tough in an of it self.

A little music would have been nice.

I like the focus / DOF implementation. You did well with the 3 layers. It was a bit of a memorization game too because of that

Very relaxing entry.

The relaxed difficulty paired with the moody relaxing music and the simple relaxing controls made for a very relaxing experience, ha!
