LD46 — Keep it alive

Reeactor by Ace17 2020-04-28T15:19:17Z

Interesting idea for a physics simulation game, but it could do with some extra help and documentation. A visualization of the movement of the control rods would be nice too.

I can understand the basic idea that water flows from the core, to the heat exchanger, and then in a second circuit to the steam engine. After some experimentation I could get it to produce power. But what I still don't get is why there are so many valves, and if it matters which pump I activate.

On my PC, at the start it overheats in seconds, you have to be quite quick to set the control rods down to 0, or the game is over before it even starts.

Heart.ache//nascension by Alchemic 2020-05-01T16:47:32Z

Nice idea, and the game has a nice retro vibe. I feel that it gets overwhelming too quickly, and there isn't a lot of choice in your actions except launching as many cells as possible.

I wonder if you couldn't make a turn-based game out of it where you really have to strategically plan your network and out-smart the viruses.

P.S. please leave likes for commenters - that way we help each other out getting ratings.

Life: 42 Cells by kara 2020-04-28T19:20:51Z

Brilliant idea to combine the rules of GO + the rules of Game of Life. Now, the game of life is an actual game.

With a bit of trial and error you start to discover certain stable patterns, and you can actually manage to go more-or-less towards a goal.

life-42-cells.png

I fear, once you've figured out how it works, the replay value is limited. Perhaps you could do a two-player mode, where the computer keeps track of who captured which area?

Have you thought about submitting to Conway's jam of life as well? https://itch.io/jam/conways-jam

Retrospective Sparks by kikiriki367 2020-05-04T18:33:20Z

Any hints? I can't get past the first level.

What does the assist mode do? It doesn't seem to make a difference.

Retrospective Sparks by kikiriki367 2020-05-12T21:37:14Z

@kikiriki367 I see now. I gave it another try and this time I managed to solve it partly at least. In the end it's a nice experience, but it's easy to get stuck.

Exo Keeper by amarillion 2020-04-26T16:26:06Z

Thanks for all the nice feedback! I totally agree with @milano23 and @ristoretto that the way information is presented in the game can be improved, to make it less confusing. For the time being, I've made a video explainer on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c1PgdhizHl0

I agree with @nsadie that the game is actually too easy, once you get past the confusing concepts. I'd love to make an updated version with some of the kinks worked out.

Exo Keeper by amarillion 2020-04-26T20:18:36Z

@shigor, you can actually play online: https://archive.org/details/msdos_SimEarth_-_The_Living_Planet_1990

Exo Keeper by amarillion 2020-04-29T20:27:29Z

@SimonL Thanks for the feedback! I like the idea of adding up/down arrows to the numbers, it's just a little thing that would make a lot of difference.

Bun-o-gotchi by m110 2020-04-27T11:16:08Z

Cute! But I don't know if I'm using the ball wrong, or if I just need to use it over and over again? They never seem satisfied that I play enough with them. It's a struggle to keep just one happy, there's not a moments rest for the Bun's mom...

Beerloose starring Beer Bearer Bob - Keep the Party Alive! by loganthemanster 2020-04-29T14:46:42Z

Love the little pixel people, and especially the audio is really funny, puts you right in the bar atmosphere. The beer song is catchy too! It's rare to have game music with a voice sample, but this one pulls it off.

Does get a bit repetitive towards the end of the game, which limits the replay value a bit. Perhaps your date should start moving around to keep the challenge going?

Message by NoamRaz 2020-05-01T16:27:15Z

Well done on your first entry. The game is short, but you managed to give it a nice atmosphere.

STRAND·ED by S J Palmer 2020-04-27T06:11:23Z

I really love the visualization of DNA replication! I'm always on the look-out for science games, and this immediately drew my attention.

Neat idea, and very polished, very playable game for a game jam.

May I request a feature for a future version? keyboard controls! I think it would be possible to control the entire game by keyboard, faster than with the mouse, to get a higher high-score.

Orbitality by CruelMotivator 2020-10-25T13:49:38Z

Star control melee battles inverted: there are space ships and asteroids orbiting around a planet, but instead of trying not to crash, you have to move the planet and manipulate the space ships.

I love the idea! It's not easy to play, but after a while you get the hang of it. Well done!

L.O.S.S. - Looped Orbital Space Shooter by amarillion 2020-10-05T14:37:50Z

@simone thanks for the bug report. The problem was caused by the domain name (sven.hemmer.gitlab.io) mismatching the certificate (*.gitlab.io) - the problem is the dot in sven.hemmer.

We've moved the game to a new location where this problem doesn't occur. Please try the new link: https://amarillion.gitlab.io/ldjam47/

And don't worry, we're not stealing any of your personal information :P

L.O.S.S. - Looped Orbital Space Shooter by amarillion 2020-10-06T18:36:04Z

Thanks for the praise everybody! @hank-ather : Yes we thought the same. the original plans included a model of Saturn's rings in the background, but unfortunately we couldn't fit that in anymore.

L.O.S.S. - Looped Orbital Space Shooter by amarillion 2020-10-06T18:38:05Z

@skleembof, it's tough to find the balance, for some playtesters the early levels were challenging enough.

I'm curious to hear from more people if they find the early game too easy and/or the late game too hard.

L.O.S.S. - Looped Orbital Space Shooter by amarillion 2020-10-10T08:23:45Z

Thanks for the positive comments @guimoliveira @eugenik @tomate-salat @ramonvicious. And thanks for the hug @etrealjunior

@etrealjunior, it seems you find this game too easy! To which level did you get? Did you manage to pass the "last" level?

@blobo The death animation was inspired by ships breaking up in FTL. But a lot smaller of course :)

LOOPOST by Olivier Millochau 2020-10-06T19:53:06Z

The storyline brings to mind the eternal space janitor Roger Wilco from the Space Quest series. The story bits are extensive and very well done, but it feels a bit separated from the main game. It might be fun if you had some dialog choices during the story, perhaps also affecting the levels a bit (Maybe you would get to play different levels depending on your choices - of course this would mean designing more levels so I can understand this is a tall ask)

I like the orbit mechanic, it's especially fun to bounce off the black & white holes.

Petri Dish by johanhelsing 2020-10-06T19:32:08Z

It's a cute little sandbox simulation. By strategically holding reserves of the different species, occasionally staging wars to cull the population, I managed to hold on until 13 generations and 700+ deaths.

You could probably give the game more of a concrete goal by keeping track of a high score, in terms of deaths / generation. But I feel that the score would also be very dependent on the starting position.

I like the creepy background noises, it makes the whole thing very atmospheric.

X-periment by Nameless Ghoul 2020-10-06T18:00:01Z

This is a nice polished prototype of a pretty interesting game mechanic. And yes, I wish for more levels too, I think that this mechanic has more uncovered potential.

What would make it slightly better (I think) is if the blocks weren't so slippery, i.e. if you could let yourself be more reliably carried by a ghost block. As it is, you aren't really pushed forward by a block that you are on top off, you tend to slide off, which makes especially the last level tricky.

Domain of the Time Wizard by BookerBlueJay 2020-10-22T19:05:13Z

Nice game. I made a map on paper, which is nostalgic fun by itself :)

Shape Escape - A minimalist strategy game by S J Palmer 2020-10-07T05:10:26Z

Nice concept! I was also reminded of Mini Metro.

Right now clicks change a section of tracks temporarily, as long as you hold. Have you considered letting these changes be permanent? I think it would be easier to manage lots of shapes if you can re-arrange the map permanently (you could just set & forget). But perhaps you already tried this idea during playtesting?

Shape Escape - A minimalist strategy game by S J Palmer 2020-10-07T15:59:29Z

I tried the permanent version with your cheat code, and I think I do like it better. It's probably a matter of taste.

F=g(m1m2/d^2) by mungobulge 2020-10-05T15:40:06Z

Nice short physics puzzler! The idea is really innovative. I played through all levels, and I like how you expanded the core game mechanic (gravity) in different ways. The game has a very polished feel too.

The game is on the slow side (since you are 'stuck', you can't control much so you often have to wait), and solving a level involves luck just as much as tinkering.

What might be interesting is to add a 'ghost', i.e. the trail of a previous playthrough, so you can fine-tune your solution. It could also be interesting to add some sort of hi-score (per level) so you can play for the shortest / quickest solution. That would give it a bit more replayability.

The Loop of Death by TheMosterts 2020-10-06T18:32:52Z

The graphics style is neat!

But I couldn't figure out the controls, it's only by reading the comments here that I found out I need to press E to pick up an item. After I learned that, I finally managed to kill some baddies!

Retro Loop by Minos_L2b 2020-10-06T19:01:20Z

Aw, I really couldn't get past the 3rd level. You've made it too hard! Otherwise a neat idea, and the graphical style is nice: simple & tasteful!

Loop Dream by ZoeAgxn 2020-10-23T21:02:40Z

A fun challenge!

Once you figure out a good strategy it's really not too difficult - I got scores of 103, 97 then 60. I start by building up a very rough path by clicking quickly tiles in a line towards the end (not paying too much attention to whether they connect up), then go over in a second pass to 'fix' the path. With this strategy it's quite manageable.
