I love the flashlight lighting up the dungeon -- it really makes you feel like you are lost in a maze and adds to the atmosphere. Some spooky music would have made it really awesome. Was I supposed to be able to interact with the barrels? I quite enjoyed your game!

balance686 2019-04-30 19:08

@snufkinshat Thanks for playing! I was planning to add many things (barrel interaction and music to name a couple) but I ran out of time.

snufkinshat 2019-04-30 19:20

I hear ya! I had to keep simplifying my game to have a finished product, too. :-) Funny enough, my game is also a maze exploration game where you have to use up your life to explore.

balance686 2019-04-30 19:41

@snufkinshat I look forward to playing it! I was too tired to write up descriptions for the game last night so I'm getting that out of the way then I'll take it for a spin :)

amerigo-gazaway 2019-05-01 05:34

Cool game! Love the atmosphere land the demon gate "idea". Would have loved to hear some spooky music or even a simple ambience track. If you ever need help in that dept. (music and sfx) feel free to get in touch.

squirmonkey 2019-05-01 05:35

I like the idea here, and the flashlight is well done. I found the level design a little problematic though, because there was no way to tell which way I was supposed to go, so the decision of whether to cross a gate or not felt less like a tactical decision and more like a guess. A good fit for the theme though, well done! As the other commenter mentioned, it could use some music, but time is a big limit in these things.

unplugred 2019-05-01 05:36

that was way more fun than expected, enjoyed it a lot! sure had a lot of content to it

ninjacatz 2019-05-01 05:45

The game is quite difficult, especially level 3 (mb im noob) Nice job!

someday-not-today 2019-05-01 19:00

this face :D nice job

yvanor 2019-05-01 19:21

I liked the level design, as we have to make choice between trying to pass though traps and don't get it, or play it safe and sacrifice some health.

An interesting little game, nice job !

gullyngames 2019-05-01 20:17

Loved the game! At first I thought it would be easy but level 2 took a while to beat. Some simple music would have been nice, as would some simple animations for the player. The spooky sounds and dim lighting added to the atmosphere of the game. Great job!

pixscope 2019-05-01 20:24

Really good and fun !

balance686 2019-05-01 21:42

@amerigo-gazaway Glad you enjoyed it! I wish it had music as well but I finished adding sound effects with 4 minutes to go before submission :P Thanks for the offer I bookmarked your site!

@squirmonkey Yeah there's definitely guesswork involved. I figured with only having 3 levels it would be too quick of an experience if you could just breeze through it. Thanks for playing!

@unplugred Much appreciated!

@ninjacatz Thanks for playing! Glad you made it through!

@someday-not-today haha thanks!

@yvanor I'm glad you liked it! I was running way behind and made the levels on submission day :p

@gullyngames I hear you. They were definitely planned (along with a monster that would patrol the halls) but I finished right at the buzzer. Next time haha thanks for playing!

@pixscope Much love!

simonl 2019-05-02 16:14

I agree with the others, that some background music would enhanced the mood quite a lot.

But even without that, it feels like you are really lost in a maze. The hard decisions of stepping through a gate or not helps there.

I like the flashlight idea. After the first level I thought it was quite unnecessary, but with the traps in the second level it really made sense and was very cool.

A running animation would have also been nice ;)

But all in all good work!

balance686 2019-05-02 17:29

@simonl I completely agree with the music/animation suggestions. I fell behind during the jam and they unfortunately didn't make the cut. I was extra choked about the lack of music especially because it definitely would have helped the mood.

I planned to have more levels but when it became clear I would have to settle for 3 my thinking was first introduce mechanics, second introduce hazards, third ramp up the difficulty. Thanks for playing!

sahoskins1 2019-05-02 18:49

Enjoyed the flashlight mechanics. Felt maybe some animation on the character and some music would have gone a long way here but I get it that we're making these games under pretty extreme time constraints. Well done with this though, was a good concept :)

balance686 2019-05-02 19:36

@sahoskins1 Thanks! I spent too much time prototyping this time around. I won't make that mistake next jam :)

ianlux 2019-05-03 00:02

Quite nice experience, I like calmer adventure-like games, it's challenging and relaxing at the same time haha. Liked the demon door mechanics

ropedog 2019-05-03 01:26

The flashlight effects are really cool, and it definitely adds to the overall mood in this game. It's fun crawling through the creepy dungeon to try and find a way out with only your flashlight. The different paths and hazards really add a sense of impending doom, and I enjoyed doing my best to avoid them. I think maybe adding some music would really kick the overall mood up to 11. Nice job!

balance686 2019-05-03 05:05

@ianlux thanks I'm glad you enjoyed it!

@ropedog much appreciated! thanks for playing!

black-flag 2019-05-03 15:02

I really like the spooky atmosphere within the dungeons! I also really like the puzzles! I think a feature that you could add is so you don't have to pay to go over a demon gate once you have already gone over it once, this isn't an issue whatsoever though!

Overall, this is a really good jam entry!

balance686 2019-05-03 17:39

@black-flag I like that idea! I think a level redesign incorporating more gates (and wrong paths) with one time costs would probably be better than the approach I took. Definitely something to think about. Thanks for playing!

balance686 2019-05-03 18:07

Anyone happen to know how to opt out of humor? I wasn't given the option when I submitted the game and can't seem to do it now either. In my last two jams (LD41 and LD42) you could edit the game and opt out of categories. Not that it's a big deal but it wasn't designed with humor in mind :P

datagreed 2019-05-03 18:26

I loved the light and the dungeon graphics. Iw ish the gates disappeared after passing through them since the map design relies mostly on guessing and it feels a little unfair to pay the passing price more than once.

manus 2019-05-03 18:37

The overall idea for a game is really nice, I like the mechanic with managing your health by chasing routes, however there are some tips I would probably give: 1) It's something obvious, but lacking music is something that makes game less climatic, and it could be just a simple ambient that plays creepy notes and it would make it much better 2) Maybe it would be better to replace these half hearts with spikes of some kind, imo it's not matching the climate 3) Maybe you could add some interaction to other objects, like barrels. The game would feel more real.

Anyway, great job :)

sparewizard 2019-05-03 18:59

The light was a good mechanic, allowing you to peer beyond the gates to see if it would be worth it. The mazes felt a little trial and error, perhaps you could put a few more potions in dead ends so that they feel less like a waste.

Definitely very tense, though!

rudra-nil-basu 2019-05-03 20:27

I liked how I had to make a deicsion on managing the health when coming across multiple routes having a common demon gate for all of them, it made the level quite interesting. Allowing the player to sneak on the other side of the demon gate from an apparent dead end on the other side via the torch is also a good mechanic, well done on the entry :)

balance686 2019-05-03 21:13

@datagreed I agree! I fell behind and made all the levels on the last day. When I realized I'd only have time for 3 I tried to make it so you had to learn from your mistakes and apply that to the next attempt rather than breezing right through it. Turned out a bit on the punishing side though. Thanks for playing!

@manus I definitely wish I had time to add music (among other things haha). My first jam game without it :*( Interesting about the half hearts I'll keep that in mind. Thanks for the feedback!

@sparewizard That's a good idea. I did all the levels on the last day and didn't have much time to playtest them. Thanks!

@rudra-nil-basu Thanks a lot I'm glad you enjoyed it!

peachtreeoath 2019-05-04 23:08

Simple addition to the genre but I thought the game was engaging enough to finish. I actually really enjoyed the final level because it had a decent difficulty to it in terms of timing. I agree w some of the sentiment above, I think the game really shined when you were presented w a choice of confidence in getting through traps vs taking guaranteed gate damage, and also the choice of when to grab a potion or not. The game overall has a decent amount of breadth to it given that it was a solo project so well done on the jam!

balance686 2019-05-06 03:50

@peachtreeoath Thanks I appreciate the detailed feedback! Respect!

topbraj 2019-05-06 13:19

Nice work! I think another way to use health in trades (whether that be for upgrades, maps, weapons etc) would've strengthened the link to the theme. Though of course there's only so much you can do in 72 hours... :) Nice effort - I got thoroughly lost! :D

balance686 2019-05-06 16:12

@topbraj Yeah that definitely would have helped. When I first read the theme I figured most people would be making something where you buy items with health so I thought having to pay a "health toll" to enter an area would be a bit different. I think a combination of both would have been ideal but I fell really behind during this jam and just finished on time after cutting a lot of content. Next time :) I don't know how you guys do compo lol I find 72 hours tough enough :P Thanks for playing!

enderswype 2019-05-07 06:09

nice jam game bro, would've been nice to have some music or backgground to the game, a story or something to explain :)

tgiant 2019-05-07 06:38

Cool game. I loved the flash light. It work very good.

gbugge 2019-05-07 11:09

Very nice game! Easy to play and fun. The flashlight is a great idea, you really have to search your way out. Well done.

webox 2019-05-08 00:56

Grea take on the theme! I really think it has potential!. A few things: * In hard levels, it felt a bit unfair, It could've been nice to give the player to take a quick look on the hole labyrinth or to have a poorly made map or something like that. Otherwise, dying and retying gets a bit anoying. * Really loved how you managed to make a light over 2d sprites.

I think it's a really solid entry! Great job!

balance686 2019-05-08 05:32

@enderswype totally planned to have music but ran out of time. I agree about the story. That's something I need to work on for my jam games for sure. I tend to just focus on mechanics. Thanks!

@tgiant Much appreciated!

@gbugge Thanks I'm glad you enjoyed it!

@webox That's a great idea! I think the camera panning over the dungeon before the lights go out would help. Thanks for playing!

thestartlestare 2019-05-08 09:03

love the evil laugh :D

tamail 2019-05-11 15:20

For some weird reason I couldn't move the light until I stopped walking which was kinda annoying. I liked the idea of a maze game and I adore the evil laugh when you lose your life!

edevjogos 2019-05-11 16:02

Cool game, i've enjoyed it, but as many pointed out an spooky background music would had made a huge difference on the mood.

balance686 2019-05-11 18:17

@thestartlestare thanks I'm glad you liked it!

@tamail Sorry that happened! That's very strange I haven't been able to replicate it. What browser are you using? Were you keeping the mouse cursor away from the player? Thanks for playing!

@edevjogos I agree I really wanted it in there but ran out of time. Glad you enjoyed!

tamail 2019-05-11 18:43

@balance686 I'm using Google Chrome, I would give you the version but it got updated an hour ago. :/ (It was one version before: 74.0.3729.131) I was trying all the different distances between the cursor and the character. It seems like it's just my problem so do not worry about it. :)

avsc 2019-05-12 22:59

Cool game, the fact you have to pay your life to pass through the gates forces you to plan your movements to avoid backtracking, avoid wasting your life on dead ends, search for alternative paths and decide between relying in your skill or just paying for an easier route. The flashlight is very useful for the first three.

Aside from the lack of music, the player character doesn't fit the rest of the game art, everything is pixel art but he seems to be vetorial.

Also the game could keep the character always in the middle of the screen. In the maps corners the flashlight turns its orientation with no mouse movement because the character is moving in the screen.

And I don't know if it's just my screen, but the resolution of the web version is too big for it.

balance686 2019-05-13 16:54

@avsc I'm glad you enjoyed the mechanics!

Good call about the player art. I originally had a pixeled player but I didn't like the look so I went vector. Definitely a clash of styles. In retrospect I probably should have kept the player center screen. I wanted to have a bit of play in movement to make it a bit less static but you're right about approaching corners. Since the camera stops and the player keeps moving you can move over the mouse which makes the position change. Actually thinking about it if I didn't have the camera stop directly at wall boundaries but instead let it overflow into the darkness it would solve that issue as well.

I made the player 720p in browser so perhaps that could be your issue but if you click the full screen button it should size properly. Thanks for the detailed feedback/playing!

jackson-makes-games 2019-05-19 01:37

I like the idea of using a limited resource (your life) to accomplish a goal, where you can mitigate the use of the resource. However, there doesn't seem to be a ton of strategy, since you kind of just have to guess where you need to go. Also, a good backing track would add SO much to the experience, and would probably make it feel less sloggy. Pretty good job for 72 hours, and I'd love to see it in further development

jonathan-lorenz 2019-05-19 17:26

Does not run here on my shitty laptop, win7 chrome (other unity games are working).

balance686 2019-05-20 16:58

@jackson-makes-games Yeah there is definitely trial and error to it (similar to a real maze really). Someone else suggested panning over the dungeon before the lights go dark and I think that could help a bit. Really wish I had time to add music and animation but I fell really behind during this jam. Next time! Thanks for playing!

@jonathan-lorenz That is very strange! I built it for WebGL2.0 instead of 1.0 so I could use Linear color space. Is your chrome up to date? Did you try the Windows download build?

puppetmaster 2019-05-21 18:13

great little game that search for the keys with the flashlight is well implemented and gives the game a good mood.

coole game congrats!
