LD43 — Sacrifices must be made

God's Thirst by Vlad Ilisan 2018-12-06T22:19:15Z

This is a great start on an arena fighter. Movement is pretty fluid.

Two suggestions:

If the opponents telegraphed their movements through visuals and/or audio there would be a bit more game of anticipating/reacting.

Maybe some way to heal a little bit between fights?

LD44 — Your life is currency

Entity Manipulation by JCMonkey 2019-04-29T23:40:33Z

Nice puzzle game. Would be interesting to know how much variety there is in solutions for each puzzle. I don't know if some of my scores were good or not.

In addition to the other QoL suggestions people have made, an unlimited undo key would be really nice, especially as this is a puzzle you kind of work in reverse and undo would be good for exploration of playing with putting things down to see how they interact.

Linux build crashes with "There is no data folder"

Seaway by Constantin 2019-04-30T20:37:47Z

"No executables found" in Linux build (through itch installer), seems to be only a Windows exe in the package.

Use your heart by dick-claus 2019-04-29T21:23:47Z

Found pathing slightly unintuitive (preference for northeast before northwest; I got there eventually, but a dotted line overlay would be a very big QoL improvement for this UI approach). Would love to have a couple more levels to explore the concept.

Gore by Tudvari 2019-04-29T22:37:08Z

Nice work, very atmospheric; graphical style and soundtrack combine well.

I won the first time and didn't realize I had won (I misread the text), I think?

Sometimes instead of swinging my sword I swing myself, which is kind of confusing.

WORK! by Matterox 2019-04-29T20:54:19Z

Linux build works for me, although there seems to be a bug where mouse clicks don't always apply to where the target dot is located. Entering the menu with Esc and resuming the game gets it back on track, but has to be done again each day.

I agree with others, the coworkers dying in your peripheral vision really helps sell the setting.

TheMechanizedHero by RustyCrow 2019-04-29T21:40:11Z

Feels good, but didn't have any life counter. Playing on Linux. Game locked up after I lost and I had to hard quit it, not sure if I was supposed to return to a menu. Overall a solid entry.

TheMechanizedHero by RustyCrow 2019-04-30T17:01:43Z

@rustycrow Hey, no problem. I appreciate that you put out the release so we could try it at all.

Grow by Caspercaper17 2019-04-29T21:15:20Z

Plays fine on Arch Linux. Mouse isn't constrained to the game window, so it's easy to run it off the edge when turning (and thus not be able to rotate a full 360° without jumping it back in). Soundtrack is a nice start, suits the mood. Graphics are lovely.

The Devil and Some Aliens Went down to Georgia by David Markham 2019-04-29T22:03:34Z

Nice. The press-your-luck on powerups was an interesting touch. Lack of any sense of current health was frustrating (since it's not classic bullet hell one-hit)

This Game Blows by fibonacci1321 2019-04-29T20:35:28Z

Fun to play with. Arrows + Mouse is painful for me; supporting WASD + Mouse would be a significant quality of life improvement.

Heart Sacrificer by Ruztan 2019-05-01T20:43:05Z

Thanks for trying to make a Linux release. Installing through the itch launcher, I get "No executables were found" when I try to Launch the game.

The fact that I got briefly angry at your game means you definitely did something right. Good work.

A slightly smaller map might have been good: some games I felt like I was doing a lot of slow chasing of the enemy.

I could see playing this for a good few hours if more enemy types were introduced.

@sharks I'm glad you found watching valuable. Fortunately, I was able to get past the tutorial bug and figure things out. As for the Linux-native version, I've seen this a couple of times: it seems the Linux-native version wasn't tagged in the itch.io system as being for Linux, so the itch launcher doesn't recognize it for install. You can see on your itch.io page that the Windows downloads have a little Windows logo next to them, but the MacOS and Linux versions don't respectively have an apple and a penguin. I only know itch from the user end, so I dont' know how to fix that, but that's what you'd be looking for.

She Rocks by paynob 2020-04-24T03:25:49Z

I think it would help to sacrifice realism a bit and let the bird live a bit longer. You have to have quite quick reactions and accurate jumping to get out of a gas zone without losing your canary (and thus the game).

The Halting Problem by Ramble House Games 2020-04-26T17:38:16Z

There are some really interesting things in this game. Accurately placing tiles was challenging with the camera jumping away from you, something to compensate for that would have helped a lot. The springboards were fun but pretty much pointless; perhaps requiring that each piece be placed before the next becomes available would improve the gameplay.

Protect The Light! by runrajrun 2020-05-12T17:46:55Z

Very cool arcade-style game. Moving the obstacles gets compelling after a little bit of play getting used to how it works.

My only complaint is having to click to chase the mouse pointer, which got painful for my wrist either spam clicking or holding down the mouse button for the whole game. Optional keyboard controls would be great, but even just having it chase the mouse pointer without clicks required would improve the experience a lot.

IN THE ANCIENT RUINS WITH AN IDIOT by LeonardoMarques 2020-05-12T17:56:30Z

Very nice concept. I wish everything were just a little nicer to the player: it's a bit tough to move accurate distances, timing for rolling across a gap is pretty tight, and, most of all, the "idiot" starts moving *very* quickly at level start, often with a pit very close, so you have to be pretty on top of getting moving. Either a little extra time at start (especially on respawn), or just pausing each respawn until you touch a key, would help a lot.

LD47 — Stuck in a loop

Looper Hell by Dubgron 2020-10-10T16:30:23Z

Solid arcade-style game. Controls are straightforward but interesting to play around with, leading to a compelling "one more try" experience.

two tapes by Aurel300 2020-10-10T21:41:08Z

Really interesting concept for a puzzle game, glad you brought it to my stream. As we discussed, I think it really needed a visual indication that extra notes would prevent a door from unlocking, like making them glow red or something. That would have saved me quite a few minutes of being stuck down a rabbithole.

Nice use of musical concepts and a refreshing if literal take on "loop".

LOOPING ROBOT FLAG FOLLOWER 9000 by Kevin Prehn 2020-10-09T15:39:04Z

I love this little robot and need to protect them from harm.

Twist Turn Shoot Burn by gamepopper 2020-10-10T21:54:52Z

Great quick arcade-style game. Quick and a ton of fun to play with, really hits that "one more" feeling. Fantastic music. I think all it needs is SFX when you shoot the baddies to complete the sense of satisfaction.

The CRT simulation looks really cool but probably needs an accessibility option to be able to turn that off as it got to be a little overwhelming after a few minutes of play. Audio settings start really loud and aren't preserved (even reverting to loud on backing out of the game to the menu) which is frustrating.

(It's a specific ncurses compatibility dependency, too; the Arch package is ncurses5-compat-libs, ncurses and lib32-ncurses are insufficient)

Toucan's Revenge by AfroAnt 2020-10-08T17:29:44Z

Thanks for providing a Linux executable, but the 7z archive seems to be missing the pck file and possibly other required items? I tried to grab those from the Windows package and it launches but doens't seem to be complete.

Speedy Spider VS Fishy Fish by gaspard 2020-10-09T15:07:55Z

Certain amount of satisfaction seeing a game with Linux only for a change.

The artwork is lovely. The way spider only shoots *backward* makes for an interesting twist, and managing that plus navigating the environment with the strange circular movement and lily pads which are sometimes helpful and sometimes *not* was a good challenge.

Took me a while to realize the fish had more than one distinct move, after which I was able to complete it, but fish health might be a little high. That sucking-in move is tough.

Also, a note that I get ` git@gitlab.com: Permission denied (publickey).` when attempting to git clone, I had to download the zip. Extra friction might turn people off trying to install.

FROGS Training to be Heros (In a large 'wheel-thing') by HacksawUnit 2020-10-07T14:28:55Z

It was very cool developing a sense of confidence in where my jumps would land me in the ring. The physics, both of the wheel accelerating based on the frog's mass and how jumping inside a turning wheel made anticipating where you would land tricky worked out to make for interesting gameplay. And smashing everything while going really fast with Nate was super satisfying.

W.M.L.F by Webox 2020-10-07T14:45:28Z

Cow heads looked more like horses or donkeys to me, but whatever they were, rounding them up was satisfying. Fun to play, nice entry.

Loop Factory by Nitero 2020-10-09T15:04:24Z

Great puzzle game concept!

Might consider offering an optional step mode to make it easier to work through some of the later puzzles, although having to deal with it constantly moving does add to the mood.

Stasis Break by 3mpty 2020-10-07T14:39:59Z

[For other Linux people, it also runs fine out of the itch launcher with no need to adjust permissions]

Solid arcade game. To my limited experience of the genre the special power was interesting and innovative. There were a couple of places where visual indicators could be tuned to make things a little clearer for the player without reducing the visual noise.

Specifically, I'd make sure enemy attacks always stand out from other element, and the glow indicating that you're about to regain control of your ship during a stasis break could be a touch clearer.

A Night Around the Fire by arron-fowler 2020-10-10T16:34:43Z

Gorgeous voxel graphics, great soundtrack, extremely moody. Seemed to take a long time between when I pressed my One Button and when my character actually hid, not sure if it's because I was experiencing a bit of lag or if it's a little unresponsive there. Fun to play for a bit, or just sit on the menu screen and chill by the fire with the nice music.

Phil Alone by Gabriel Dias Oliveira de Almeida 2020-10-09T15:57:18Z

Thank you for including a trigger warning on your game, and thank you for bringing it to my stream.

The puzzle of how to get out worked pretty well, you left a nice trail of breadcrumbs throughout the game toward the solution.

As we discussed on my stream, the underlying story didn't quite work for me to have the intended effect, but I think it was a really interesting thing to attempt.

I've seen a couple of people play it now and I'm intrigued by how differently people react emotionally to the opportunity to manage the health of the house plant.

Chamber by Pedro Medeiros 2020-10-07T14:33:06Z

Solid basic gameplay loop. It felt like the health on the plants was *really* high, and the bombing enemy attacks were particularly difficult to evade, making rooms with either of those particularly punishing. Definitely fun to play around with, and the draft/buying rooms to add onto the end of the loop mechanic worked nicely.

The ingame text on the Evolution Room was a little confusing, in that all rooms get more difficult the more times you visit them and that description made it feel like that would be a more unique effect to that room (I guess it's more dramatic there?)

Beyond Death by Trypants 2020-10-10T21:34:30Z

Stunning graphics. Nice use of the interaction between bodies and environment for puzzles.

I wish the sky bridges had a visual effect to indicate you can't fall off the sides. I didn't have to pick my way carefully up every time.

I agree with Fupi just above that the transition in the cave felt a little odd. In fact, I almost missed that it was possible to enter the cave when I was playing, because it looked like just a closed space to mark where one idol was.

The way the environment evolves over the course of the game was a lovely bit of polish that really let you show off your artwork.

Dungeon Break by radow 2020-10-06T13:36:36Z

Innovative puzzle design, lovely graphics. My only complaint is sometimes the perspective and dark colors made it kind of hard to tell which left-right gates were open.

Grave Juice by Firebelley 2020-10-06T13:44:45Z

The physics were really fun to play around with. Getting to be invulnerable but still affected by objects was very satisfying, and the audio effects supported that. I was particularly impressed that the axes slow down at the top of their swing rather than having continuous motion, and the arrows fall on impact. Little touches that make the game world feel more real.

Nice level design allowed for creativity in finding skips. Good entry.

Crash Thunderstud Returns by JavaSaurus 2020-10-09T15:36:26Z

**Crash Thunderstud** is amazing design. This game knows exactly what it is and it leans hard into it from every design element. Core gameplay loop was fun, although I could only play a couple of times before drawing tiny loops on my trackball made my wrist start to hurt. I might come back and try it on my tablet with a stylus sometime for less pain.

Ring Rush by blotosaur 2020-10-07T14:12:11Z

Highly innovative mechanic. Took a lot of work to start getting the hang of really controlling it, and it still ends up being inherently extremely unforgiving. The quick respawns and fairly short levels help with that.

That earlyish level with the very long kill corridor is I think harder than the designer, already having good control, thought it was.

Hyperloop by very dark lord 2020-10-07T14:23:29Z

Looks fantastic. Unfortunately ran into the physics bug. I hope I get to try it again with the bugfix.

Tower Lord: Sword Loop Saga by hexkritor 2020-10-09T15:33:37Z

This big character with the heavy armor and the *huge* sword that can mow their way through enemies is a satisfying mood. I wish there'd been a bit more depth to the gameplay, but also I just wish you'd leaned even harder into the power fantasy that you're *way* more powerful than anything you encounter. Foes should fall in a single swing of your mighty sword, maybe even more than one in a single turn.

Re-Peter by Abdul Zakkar 2020-10-10T16:28:07Z

Nice puzzle game. I liked that there were a couple of levels which had multiple possible solutions.

LoopChan by Kaish 2020-10-09T15:48:59Z

Nice game. Rhythm/puzzle isn't a combination I expected. I found the timing of the rhythm aspect was a bit sensitive; it might just be that my computer was busy and interfering with input timing but the effect was pretty frustrating in that I couldn't always control things like I wanted to. I don't know if making the input timing less sensitive on the game end would work to compensate.

I think the earlier levels were timed such that it was exactly one input per beat which actually misled me into thinking that was always going to be the case and made me struggle with later levels where I had to skip some beats. It might be possible to design some of the earlier levels in a way that helps the player develop the correct expectations right away.

Loopin' Gluey by marcmagus 2020-10-05T17:24:37Z

@tolmera Thanks! A video of a game in progress is a really excellent suggestion that I probably won't have time to do for a while. I'll definitely keep the idea in mind in case I do something like this again.

Loopin' Gluey by marcmagus 2020-10-08T15:30:25Z

@phlip45 I'd love to see your video! You are correct, I really should have included diagrams. I had hoped to but I ran into a time management issue. Thanks for the feedback.

@fancyreckless Thanks! That could be an interesting idea for a variant/expansion on the idea. I wanted to keep the core rules pretty minimal so they'd be easy to learn, but it could be fun to play around with adding in more interactions. Your'e right that diagrams would have been really good to include, I ran out of time.

@voidsay let me know if you do! I definitely didn't have time to code up a digital version for people with even a naive AI but given infinite time I would have done that right after making diagrams.

Loopin' Gluey by marcmagus 2020-10-10T17:28:52Z

@phlip45 Thanks for the video! The embed didn't appear on my browser so it took me a bit to hunt it down.

You nailed the basic rules. Sorry the information I gave to try to streamline managing keeping the cards in order for physical cards was not so easy in TTS.

It was great to see someone who doesn't know me trying it out. Thanks for the feedback as well.

Loopin' Gluey by marcmagus 2020-10-11T16:54:09Z

@staircase27a Thanks for trying the game and thanks for the feedback! It was my hope that in high score situations like that the players would feel able to try to push extra points to the player in the lead to force them around an extra loop, but it might not really work out in practice.

Thanks for pointing out the wording issues. I'll try to do a post-jam editing pass to tighten up the language. Thanks for the suggestions of enhancements as well; balancing luck and strategy in a game like this is tricky.

Loopin' Gluey by marcmagus 2020-10-23T14:41:28Z

@voidsay That's great. If you aren't charging for it you're welcome to do so. Please include a link to my game's page on itch as well as to here for context. If there's going to be money involved, please email me at marcmagus at gmail and we can discuss details.

I'm excited to see a digital implementation!

Loopin' Gluey by marcmagus 2020-10-27T18:39:38Z

@voidsay looks great! I just got a chance to test it out a little. One thing I noticed, and I definitely could have written that part of the rules more clearly, but it was my intent that you can't win mid-round, so in a round with a large number of tricks you have to be careful of taking too many tricks containing face-cards as that might cause you to overshoot the goal.

Photon Loop by Alexascher 2020-10-09T14:55:21Z

Beautiful and atmospheric game, nice use of the theme.

Little Pirate Adventure by Bauke Regnerus 2020-10-07T13:54:24Z

Love the art. Fun to play.

Didn't mind the "it's easy once you find the good trades" factor for a jam game, but it feels like it would need a major rethink and not just extension to make a post-jam version without that issue.

HONK II by Tricky_Fat_Cat 2020-10-10T21:43:04Z

Solid and fun gameplay. I somehow completely missed that the environmental hazards were causing me damage, even though I was flashing red and losing health; I don't know if that's just on me for being unobservant or if there's something you could have done to more clearly communicate that.

Loopy Island by honzapat 2020-10-09T15:21:56Z

Managing the camera was the most frustrating part of the game. I also found a couple of objects where if I could see it I could interact with it even if I didn't have a clear path to navigate to it. This meant by standing in the right spots to manipulate the camera I was able to entirely bypass the maze. Nice little point-and-click adventure.

Splines 'n Shapes by SharkWithLasers 2020-10-07T03:50:30Z

Fantastic game. Chill, innovative, interesting puzzle, audio and graphics support the mood well. I look forward to buying this to play on my tablet before bed soon.

Inside Divine Comedy by Yulia_li 2020-10-10T16:24:13Z

Simple game, each circle developed some lag toward the end of the timer. The audio and visual aspects are *fantastic*. The enemies inspired by Bosch are great, and the backgrounds are very evocative. Well done.

Hulagain by squimmy 2020-10-09T15:52:24Z

Love the use of the theme, hula-hooping rhythm/platformer was sure an interesting experience.

I ended up managing my hoop by a combination of instinct and the audio cues: after the intro level I couldn't use hoop visuals effectively to know when I was supposed to be pressing which direction. tbf that's about how I hula hoop IRL too: badly, using some vague attempt at instinct and not really knowing which way I should be going. But it might have been nice if that part were either more clear or more forgiving.

For { } by SoupStoreGames 2020-10-07T14:20:42Z

Very interesting puzzle game. I look forward to trying it with the orange block indicators sometime I have a bit more time to puzzle things out.

Tank Fall by PetTurtle 2020-10-07T14:35:26Z

I had a good time with tank-spleef. I appreciated the interesting way to make a non-violent tank game and also the effect it had that the game difficulty ramps up inherently just because the terrain vanishes.

Hangin' Around by Nocity 2020-10-07T14:00:25Z

Fun set of mini games. The hand holding a hand cracked me up.

I liked the way the BGM accelerates in challenge mode as the timer shortens, lends a good sense of urgency (although I'm not sure why but I kept expecting to have less time than I did, I think due to something in the music)

Progress by Anant Ahuja 2020-10-07T13:57:29Z

I laughed out loud, so I guess I liked it.

Lupe by Nachodlv 2020-10-09T15:16:30Z

Interesting idea, fun to play, although I did frequently find myself in situations where neither corner was facing in a really useful direction and I had to just make movements hoping I'd tumble into a more useful orientation. That's either funny or made it hard to feel in control depending on your perspective.

Particle Accelerator by Koolruz 2020-10-09T15:30:22Z

The physics on this one are *interesting* and, I found, really hard to get a good intuition for even after I had intellectualized what was going on. Very fun to play around with.

A tale of Loopism by Pomo 2020-10-06T13:49:49Z

Absolutely love that little robot.

The Ice Man Loopeth by Ramble House Games 2020-10-09T15:43:07Z

Beautiful graphics. Running around on tiny planetoids is very satisfying, great base on which to build up a game.

We talked about this on my stream, but the way the camera left/right works on absolute coordinates is kind of confusing when the camera is in a position where Planetary North is screen down so left moves the camera in the opposite direction expected.

Also, it would be nice if something in the game told you with a visual cue that the jumps account for orbital movement so you don't have to lead your target planetoid, just target it directly no matter how far away it is. Perhaps also being just a tiny bit forgiving on targetting, so if you're just barely off target you can still land rather than flying off into nowhere.

The Titan's grave by BadPiggy 2020-10-06T13:41:54Z

Solid entry. As mentioned in my chat, the perspective on the graphics was really effective in making the Titan very titanic.

I ran into a bug where my game locked up in a loop in phase 3 with the Titan fist smashing me but not causing damage and my controls not working. I wasn't able to reproduce, but you can see it in the VOD.

I didn't love the long boss invulnerable segment in phase 3, but it's a common feature of boss fights and probably a matter of taste.

Re:Live by Ciber_Turtle 2020-10-10T21:44:49Z

A nice take on the multiple lives through the level puzzle theme. I *absolutely love* the player sprites, and especially how they are customized and retain their customization as cute little ghosts. Made the game for me.

Re-Slash by Croxel Studios 2020-10-10T16:45:38Z

This was a really cool concept that I'm glad you tried and executed well and didn't quite land for me. As a puzzle the levels were interesting if kind of easy, but as an arcadish game I felt like the precision demanded of my inputs was higher than I could reasonably achieve and the end result was that I knew what I wanted to do but I couldn't make it work, and in a frustrating "I'm fighting the game" rather than "I'm not quite good enough and I want to keep trying" way.

It occurs to me than twin analog stick controls with a little smoothing might have worked better for me than keyboard+mouse.

Also if the interactions with the enemies (especially the arrow turrets) were a bit more forgiving so the focus were shifted a bit more toward the puzzle element vs the combat element it might have been more to my taste.

Loop's Way by Linetaru 2020-10-07T14:05:45Z

Interesting puzzle game with loads of visual polish. The ability to steal *some* cubes via reset was neat to play around with, and had some interesting consequences.

X REALITIES AWAY FROM HOME by Francois_B 2020-10-10T16:16:05Z

Game looks really good. Had to tune up ship efficiency to achieve victory. Main gameplay loop is pretty fun.

Separate from the difficulty tuning, the ship movement is a bit slow. Even for a chill floating in space experience I kept wanting a higher top speed.

SpaceMan by sefan 2020-10-09T14:57:46Z

Nice exploration game. There were I think a couple of bugs in my experience: the first world rotation trigger (the one in the kind of V-canyon) was invisible until I got really close; if I hadn't decided to go into "I'm curious what happens if I get trapped" mode I'm not sure I would have ever found it. Also I *think* I found all the gems, but I couldn't find a way to get back into my ship if there's a win state.

I agree with the commenter above me: an indication of how many gems are left would be really helpful.

Base Defender by Skeffles 2020-10-10T16:17:46Z

Interesting entry. Trying to aim through to the opposite side of the loop was challenging. Breaking your streak is pretty punishing.

Loop Deleter by Zachary Barbanell 2020-10-06T13:46:30Z

Really interesting puzzle game. Hits that "I know what I'm trying to do but I'm not sure how I'm going to accomplish it" feeling that's good in a puzzler.

Donut Island by odedro987 2020-10-07T14:26:05Z

Fun little arcade-style game. Pickups went away pretty quickly, which was either good difficulty balance or harsh depending on how you look at it. I enjoyed running around in this goofy little world.

Felt like the shotgun RoF was a bit too low.

Who Knows by Whom 2020-10-10T21:38:03Z

Interesting basic mechanic, fun to play with. Timer was a bit long; a much shorter timer (like 60-90s) and slightly faster movement would have made me much more interested in playing again and competing for high scores.

The meaning of Spacebar was the inverse of my expectations. This was either an interesting challenge, or a control dissonance, you decide which.

Pacxit by randomLockNess 2020-10-09T15:14:50Z

Really interesting idea, although some of the ghost transforms were kind of obnoxious to listen to. Very innovative. I feel like I'd have to play a *lot* to get to the point where the ghost sounds would help me locate the exit; I found I was entirely navigating by volume.

A not so boring game by clemetayer 2020-10-07T20:16:00Z

Linux players will need to download both the executable and the pck file.

I liked the game and particularly the way the twist played out. One complaint: arrow keys + mouse is a really uncomfortable combination for many common setups, as they both tend to be associated with the right hand. Supporting WASD as an alternative to the arrow keys would have improved the user experience.

Nice entry.

A not so boring game by clemetayer 2020-10-09T15:01:13Z

@clemetayer fair enough on the controls. I noticed another game I played this year used both wasd and zqsd, presumably for azerty support. Something to think about for next jam?

Temporal Loop by nohac 2020-10-07T14:08:01Z

Oh, that was a fun mechanic to play around with. Would love to see an expanded version; you could set up some interesting puzzles with it, and there's lots of capacity for the player to discover faster routes than the "intended" (or for you to force them / put shinies in interesting places)

Returning Home by hansj 2020-10-07T14:15:55Z

Fun core gameplay loop, although I didn't see anything in the game that told me I could click on my ship to upgrade. I played an entire time (losing) thinking I just had to collect "enough" crystals to, ummm, power the landing thrusters?

I also managed to achieve escape velocity and leave the map entirely. I'll post a link to the video later, it was pretty funny. Probably suggests the control scheme around the landing thrusters could be made clearer to the player.

Returning Home by hansj 2020-10-07T17:45:14Z

@hansj Yeah, on my second play after I was kindly informed about clicking to upgrade I saw what your intent had been. I think I perceived that glowing circle as being some sort of energy shield or something. It's amazing what we can miss when playing games.

@honest-dan I'm really intrigued by the difference in our experiences here: I found the falling blocks interesting as a "have to pay attention when I dig under things for a power-up/to get to a gap to see if I'm going to drop something on my head I need to dodge", but I found the drill chasing slightly unsatisfying because it always felt like it came out of nowhere and just *boom, game over* rather than building tension and encouraging me to dig faster/hunt clocks powerups.

Thanks for sharing your game on stream! I'll come back and update with a highlight link when it's available.

I was thinking about my commentary further, and I've reconsidered something: I was trying to play the game on its own terms and engage with the "figure out which controls do what puzzle" I was presented with, but that doesn't make any sense in the context of the story of an astronaut who presumably is trained in the use of their thrusters. I now believe pretty strongly that the lack of documentation of which key applies thrust in which direction is a design flaw. Ideally, probably, a little model of a space-suit with labelled vectors for the visual learners, but identifying the axes would help.

20,000 Leagues by marcmagus 2021-04-29T22:22:43Z

@dhim Thanks for the feedback! Good comment about card layout; making the numbers bigger would help quite a bit. Also they should be in the top-left, that was a foolish choice on my part. I'll look at it with and without a gutter next time I do a P&P.

You read the rules correctly that set values are for your collected cards only, yes.

I notice an implication from your question that you got a different question wrong, in the same way that @bongard22's group did, which makes it clear to me I could have written the rules more clearly to call out a difference from expectations: you only count up score at the end of the game, accruing cards over all three rounds. This differs from Sushi Go and thus expectations. (The table goes up to 9 because there are 9 in the deck and you could theoretically get them all)

20,000 Leagues by marcmagus 2021-04-30T23:27:33Z

@fabula-rasa thanks for the feedback, and glad you enjoyed the game! I didn't put 2 players on the label because I wasn't confident I could make the 2 player experience have the effect I intended and didn't have time for the extra playtesting it would require knowing that games often behave very differently with 2 players than multi-player. I suspect it would be good to shrink the deck a little, maybe something like "Remove all Fusiliers and 1 each of Jelly, Shark, Tuna, SCUBA, Ray, Crab, Snail" along with a 7 card hand size.

Sounds like you got the basic interactions I was hoping for, which is great to hear.

Great feedback on layout, thank you. Definitely wish I'd made those numbers bigger.

(On SCUBA Divers, the table row goes up to 6 because that's how many there are in the game, so the set scores "how many SCUBA Divers you have (up to 6) times how many unique attractions you have, as long as you have at least 2 SCUBA Divers". That row of the table isn't my best work.)

@alyd-asmar A typography nerd friend of mine pointed me at [The League of Movable Type](https://www.theleagueofmoveabletype.com/) some years back and they're my first stop when looking for fonts for anything.

@incobalt That's a really good point. I made a late decision to put all the triangular numbers directly on the card and it was a good choice; I should have done it for Eels and Jellies as well. I also shouldn't have both Eels and Jellies, it's bad design, but I kept pushing off resolving that and never did. (If you check out the PDF you'll see I include a table of values for 2^x and others, but, yes, directly on the card would be perfect)

Ideally I also would have included card counts for each card directly on the cards, but...didn't get there.

20,000 Leagues by marcmagus 2021-05-03T13:58:02Z

@ditam It's a silly reference to https://genius.com/Arrogant-worms-sponges-lyrics

Yeah, 3 players is tough right now. If you look upthread someone did try it 2p and it sounds like it worked pretty well, and I had some thoughts on deck trimming to potentially tighten up the experience, but I definitely didn't have time to playtest for 2 at all, so, knowing 2 often feels very different from multi- I didn't want to put 2 on the label. I'd considered a solo mode as well but when I was playtesting with myself I felt like too much of the interesting part of the game involved reasoning about what choices the other players would make, which would be lost.

20,000 Leagues by marcmagus 2021-05-03T16:56:53Z

@$162477 I'm really intrigued by how you played in a Minecraft server. That's pretty cool!

Thanks for the feedback. It sounds like you ran into all of the potential points of confusion that I had noted when working on the rules and tried to address, and it's quite clear from all the feedback that I didn't get quite as much clarity in there as I needed to. Rules writing is really difficult.

SCUBA are indeed very powerful, and my biggest note for continued development is to keep an eye on whether they're good in a way that makes drafting interesting or too good in a way that either reduces interesting choices or makes the game feel too much like luck of the draw of initial hands. I definitely appreciate the feedback that it felt a bit too much on the luck of the draw side for your group. How many players did you have?

Your other question is a little hard to answer for you, as it's much more about the social contract of playing a competitive game than it is about my game in particular. My strong opinion on the answer to that question is "you should do what will make the game feel best for your group". My personal opinion is that in a game like this it is implied that table talk/open negotiation of kingmaking is frowned upon, and that intentional kingmaking (taking actions with the intent of causing a particular player to win over another) violates the implicit social contract, and you should play for the best end-game position you can achieve (whether that's maximize your score, maximize your relative score, maximize your odds of pulling off a come-from-behind victory) But many miles of electronic ink have been spilled on this topic on Boardgame Geek and blogs by writers more thoughtful than I, and all I can really say is I'm sympathetic that you found yourself in a position where you had a whole round to play where you felt like you had already lost, and I hope that you found rounds to be as quick as I anticipated so you weren't in that painful situation for very long.

Towering Dice by marcmagus 2021-10-06T14:13:18Z

@rein Thanks for the feedback!

There is no requirement to remain in a plane, nor is it even required to make pyramids. If you look at the photo on the itch page (which I mistakenly failed to include in the page here) you can see I had a non-pyramidal structure with a bit of a curve to it. You can absolutely make whatever shapes work well with the pips you have.

I'll think about the three 1s problem, thanks for pointing it out.

Towering Dice by marcmagus 2021-10-07T03:27:18Z

@DaleP I'm really impressed by what looks like a 4-3-2-1 tower on the top of that. I'm not even sure I can get a 1 on a 2 on my reference dice. Very cool!

Towering Dice by marcmagus 2021-10-07T03:41:24Z

I really dig the art style you went with for this. I'm not much of a tower defense player but this was approachable and I felt like I was able to get some mastery rapidly.

Biggest thing that stands out to me is that I've been noticing that there's a really big difference in engagement between total silence and even minimal sfx if they're not terrible. I think some little pew-pews would have enhanced the experience a lot.

Lovely calm little game with an interesting base mechanic. Beautiful art and music.

I did find lots of tiny puffs gave me better control than bigger puffs, so I ended up not really using the interesting part of the mechanic in the end, though, though that might be my poor play.

Great to see Adelie return, with a fun and challenging game.

In tweaks, maybe if the down-throw for combine had a slightly more forgiving target range, tweaking the difficulty down slightly without fundamentally changing it might be beneficial. There's already a lot of difficulty just in managing the slidy movement.

For some reason the audio didn't work when running the game through the itch launcher, but works fine when run directly.

I wish the bodies didn't have collision, or faded after being drained. It was frustrating to be in a situation where you knew you'd have to spend dash energy twice: once to drain and then again to get back out of the corner you'd dashed into.

Enemies camping the doorways was really frustrating.

The use blood to power everything mechanic worked out interestingly, fun overall.

I enjoyed this take on a puzzle platformer. Interestingly slightly different movement, the hidden-but-obvious shinies were fun to hunt.

Hunt-the-gems for warp was an interesting approach that is either brilliant or doesn't work out quite right and I'm not sure which. It might make it "the warps are harder to get to for exactly the people who need them most", or it might make it "decide if you want to focus on platforming or puzzling" and I'm still not sure which it is. I think you mixed puzzle gems and harder-platforming gems so the answer is unfortunately a bit of a muddle that pushes it more to the hard for the people who need it end. I definitely enjoyed playing (and hunting gems).

Interesting take on a puzzle game. A lot to like about it.

A couple of points for improvement: zap both making her immediately turn 180 *and* swap rotation direction was maybe a little too much to readily internalize what would happen under time pressure. Aiming zap was tricky (the stage kept advancing just as I was about to click) - maybe if it targeted a 3x3? Flood seemed unworth using as it costs energy *and* takes away energy income.

The atmosphere was lovely and I enjoyed the "work with your friend" approach.

As we talked about, I loved the attempt at having the golem perform complex actions, I only wished they were better communicated to the player especially when happening off-screen. It occurs to me that a solution I've seen in other games (like Sims) is to have something like a thought-bubble with a symbol that would indicate what the golem is up to, and it might be ok to have something like that on screen-edge to imply that even when they're out of view you can tell what they're doing.

Unique puzzle mechanic, leads to some interesting interactions. If you could find somewhere to display any currently delayed effects along with countdown timers for how many more turns of delay they have it would go a long way to improving transparency as to what's going on and let the player focus more on figuring out the puzzles.

Too bad a couple of things didn't render properly in WINE. If you ever get a linux-native version out please tag me so I can play around with the game a bit more as-intended.

Maybe it was just me, but maybe if there were a little more warning before terrain comes in to make it more available to try to take advantage of like the protective tower thing.

I enjoyed the concept quite a bit. The controls (particularly click to aim, never my favorite) were a little fiddly at times, especially when trying to position the light and fight in the other direction at the same time. Which is also interesting challenge, but also sometimes frustrating "hard to get the game to do what I think I'm going to tell it to do".

My main suggestion for improvement would be better telegraphing of the "shoot through the light" power. Enemy health was also maybe a little high throughout, especially the boss.

Overall an enjoyable experience.

Lovely little story. I was less engaged by trying to find the "correct" set of options for the best ending (which, maybe there should be more than one path there?), but just casually playing through a lovely conversation between two people who like each other but are having a little trouble communicating it was pleasant. I like that, because they clearly do both like each other, there aren't *bad* endings so much as just less good ones.

You said your goal was to learn to make a good-looking game and boy did you nail that!

It also plays solidly and sounds good, overall excellent work. I enjoyed the dancing in the intro as well.

My big "I wish this had gotten in" is that archers currently spawn looking like swordsmen rather than archers, which is jarring and makes it harder to plan your moves.

I'm not sure I loved competitive play being for speed, which ends up feeling kind of luck-based on early upgrades, vs. score-based, although score-based would have its own issues with incentives.

Neat game, had a great time playing it on emulator. For some reason I thought I had to press START after stepping onto the pad to send data to the register (and previously missed that I had to press START to confirm a target). I really appreciated that I could put things into registered and get immediate feedback on how the number changed, so I could combine estimated mental arithmetic with a test-and-update loop to get to the result quickly rather than having to do it all in my head. Supports a variety of thinking styles.

Lethal Dice 50 by marcmagus 2022-04-07T03:59:56Z

@zc74560 yeah, I'll try to get the rules sheet into the TTS mod sometime soon post-Jam. It's not something I've done yet and it fell to the time/priority thing along with a how-to-play video. Good suggestion.

@frib the intent is that you're only required to roll enough that you can cover the boxes using everything in reserve (that's a lot of what makes reserve worth taking risks to build up). I'll add an FAQ and take a look into whether I can word it better for 1.2, thanks.

@niterich Thanks for the suggestion. I'll take a look and consider a revision to clarify that point. The axis labels are intuitively obvious. ;) (Fair point, I really should have taken the time to get that in)

Lethal Dice 50 by marcmagus 2022-04-08T14:46:30Z

@bunner interesting! That would get you past the slow ramp-up and into the critical section faster; my only concern is that the jump from 6 to 10 skips over the most interesting segment (around 7-9). Thanks for sharing.

@yusovv it was intentional. The theme I designed around is a little too dark especially in the current cultural moment for me to be comfortable leaning into it explicitly, so I didn't want to do card titles/artwork. In a jam timeline I knew I couldn't figure out a way to be appropriately sensitive to it. I had been considering putting special rules text into that area but I decided to scale it back to the most basic version of the game.

@bucketh3ad @ratstail91 Agreed: there are some places where the structure and wording of the rules could be a lot clearer. Maybe I'll get another update out. The presence of a diagram showing the layout on the table also doesn't seem to help as much as I'd expected it to.

Lethal Dice 50 by marcmagus 2022-04-09T14:21:01Z

@jimbly you missed the rule I forgot to write into 1.0 of the rules release (sorry): that once you've scored/failed to score cards for a round all the remaining cards are discarded before a new set of cards is drawn. Normally you will have 1 card in round 1, 2 cards in round 2, etc (unless penalties accelerate that). This could still be worded more clearly. Sorry for the error. (Fortunately you still get a sense of the game experience when played as you did, just highly accelerated)

@voidsay Thanks. Two pages and more explanation probably would have been a better choice for this one than the rules I ended up with, but, well, jam time happened.

@jitspoe @elysiagriffin Thank you both for taking the time to play my game on your streams. I know it's more of a time commitment than your usual content and I appreciated the opportunity to watch people interact with it. It was very valuable feedback.

Great puzzle game, this kind of thing is my jam!I had a really good time with this one.

At least 95% of the interactions were either apparent or readily discoverable, and watching things unfold to misfortune was a joy. There were just a couple of places (I guess mostly around line-of-sight, which can always be tricky on a grid) where it was a bit opaque -- maybe if e.g. the thief's thought bubble were supplemented with a dashed-line to the thing he noticed it would call better attention to that interaction.

Fantastic fun! Solid multiplayer SkiFree implementation, you got character customization in, it was clearly a lot of fun as a stream/play with chat game. It's got a nice tight loop so it's usually not too long a wait when you're out before the next round.

Good implementation of skiing basics. Couple of hitboxes were maybe not quite forgiving enough but overall felt good.

One player noted that ping time to the server caused an issue for them, so it would be good to look into that.

I would love an option to swap left/right, as my brain really wanted the classic controls relative to the skier's facing rather than relative to the camera.

Love me a city builder. Took me a little while to internalize that buildings only trigger when they're built. It was kind of neat that different buildings had different shapes. I almost want an option in the menu that shows all the buildings that exist and the probability of each coming up if they're not equal, to think about planning.

Unless there's a random element, it might be nice to just show a shadow on the power meters of "what will happen if I place this building here" to help expose the mechanics.

I could see the shape of future development with the different terrains. Not sure you needed those special buildings, but it would be interesting to see what the game is like with more variety.

Chasing the annoying ring of light turned out to be pretty interesting base gameplay, and you got some clever level design that interacted with it in interesting ways. Nice work.

I enjoyed the concept. I found I struggled a lot to find the matching shapes between the bottoms of the parts and the circuit boards. Half the times when I thought I had the right part I didn't at all, and I ultimately found "I know which way is up, grab a random part and spin it through the upright orientations until I can mash something in like a dumb monkey" to be the most effective approach.

It's not *bad*, it's just not obvious *enough*. Or at least for me the difficulty of shape-matching scaled way too quickly, getting to what I would want for an "I'm an expert give me everything" difficulty around Round 3. Next time I'll just put everything in the Square Hole.

Lovely lonely exploration/puzzle. I liked, but was occasionally frustrated by, the rover's varying choices of turn radius.

It played well knowing I could retry until I solved the puzzle, but I actually feel like the game would lend itself really well to a procgen map, even if it's just look at the radar map and try to plan out a course and then see how well you do.

Some really nice bits of subtle polish that really help sell the experience.

Super charming. I appreciated (per discussion) that there are multiple solutions to each moment, so the player is more likely to feel smart/rewarded and less likely to get into the "ok I'm just reloading until I figure out what the designers wanted" cycle. Also means you can still play after watching someone else play and have a satisfying experience if you know there's more than one solution.

Good stuff once I realized my controller was out of deadzone and switched to using it. Fun challenge, interesting perspective, floaty felt good but hard. Found it a bit challenging to judge where I would be landing, and sometimes I felt like my double-jump vanished. I'm sure that's all user error.

Nice take on a platformer. "slimes can't tell time" was an interesting mechanic, although I'm not sure I ultimately liked its effect on the game. I'd really have to try again without the timer bug to be sure, though, I suspect that dominated my reaction.

As discussed, there was an issue where the timer didn't reset when you fell into a pit, which made those effectively cost you two hearts a lot of the time, in a frustrating way.

I kind of feel like controller twin-stick or even just aim and aim dash in direction of movement controls to remove the mouse from the equation would result in a control scheme that feels more comfortable and natural for me. Game felt good but a little too hard, I wish I could have seen more of the upgrade content.

Nice atmospheric platformer. Horizontal movement in the air felt like it was slightly less than my intuition which kept throwing off my jumps.

Shrinking light as a timer was effective and fitting.

Fun game. As discussed, shield regen is maybe a little too fast, but better too easy than too hard, and it would be great if there were a direction to space station indicator. Visuals read very cleanly; I could immediately tell what the direction to crew indicator meant.

Great little twist on classic arcade game style. I had a great time with this one.

Interesting take on the theme. I liked the effect that as your platform shrank things in some ways became easier, but you did also approach your inevitable end.

Very atmospheric. I wished a couple of the mechanics were exposed better (more clarity that the red torches damage enemies, and maybe health bars for the torches would help, also maybe a more clear digging animation for crystals would make it more clear that rocks *don't* have resources by contrast).

Solid game, I particularly enjoyed that you got *an entire character creator in*. Not sure if the amusing "ragdoll bodies under floaty heads" movement was an intentional design aesthetic or a happy accident of jam timelines but it was entertaining.

Silly fun, excellent polish. I particularly love the intersection of the musical sting and TV popup animation with really excellent timing introducing each minigame. Just exactly right.

"That's not how safes work" - a couple of the minigames I had a little trouble figuring out what I was being asked to do.

"Put it in the square hole" - everything should go in the square hole as an easter egg

I enjoyed the nod to Scrambl'd.

I enjoyed the humor of the game quite a bit, and your models were lovely. I would have appreciated some more transparency of the game mechanics. An ability to read tower abilities while paused, right there in the UI, would really help the on-ramping, letting the player associate it with the UI slots.

Follow-up thoughts: attempting to get a moral dilemma into any game is tricky business, and especially within the time constraints of a jam. "Who deserves to live?" is a particularly tricky one to get right in a game context, too. I'm not sure you quite nailed it for me, but the fact that I said "maybe I should have taken a 'save everybody' approach instead of moralizing about them' and then immediately followed that up with 'but forget this guy'" means you definitely got somewhere with it. Nice work.

Interesting take on a puzzle game. Some good choices. Only major request is for a pointer to the Reaper when offscreen, especially right at the beginning of the game it feels bad to take a turn only to realize you've gone unknowingly closer to death.

Interesting take on a management sim. I only wish I could click on furniture the same way I can click on residents to see what needs each bit of furniture will satisfy. A couple of them weren't very obvious, and you could just repeat the icon so I didn't have to guess.

Game might want a content note for imagery of self-harm.

Fantastic graphics, very effective setting. You got a surprisingly deep gameplay into a small amount of mechanics, nice work.

I particularly appreciated the summary odds at the end of the game, because people are *terrible* at mentally estimating cumulative odds like that.

Some great details in the backgrounds.

An interesting mechanic. I liked the heat-map effect (even if I didn't notice I could change the settings on it, a nice feature though). I entirely missed that walls were portable, so that's something that could have more clarity: either through making the objects more obviously portable or a classic by starting the character trapped in a temperate room where they have to pick up a wall to start playing.

A lovely edu-game, and something I could see playing for hours in a similar fashion to the way I used to play Civilization before bed.

As I mentioned on stream, I would have appreciated, especially for a turn-based game like this, if some of the mechanics were a bit more transparent. Especially the mechanics around elephant/poacher movement and poacher capture. An optional mode that separates the elephant, poacher, and ranger movement stages and pauses between each would probably help beginning players and then you could have a checkbox to go to "fast movement" which would be more like the current behavior. Animations seem to happen in a different order than the canonical order (I see elephants moving late?) which is also confusing.

I was almost as bad at this game as I am at real-life gardening!

Nice simple game, pleasant and soothing (until it dies at least).

Less on-theme, but I wonder if people would appreciate an alternate mode that's a little bit slower and doesn't have the inevitable death aspect so you can just chill to trimming a plant for a while.

We didn't need that sun anyway.

Interesting and thematic gameplay. The way the click-hold-release control worked was an interesting challenge, although I felt like in the end it pushed me to a kind of degenerate "always detonate in quick low-altitude bursts" strategy which was less fun. I wonder if click to commit a target and your bomb flies to that spot and detonates when it gets there would work out better?

If you can submit a document of the game rules some of us would be pretty interested in looking over what you came up with. Just include a list of components that can be borrowed from existing games, or something we can print off and cut out if you have custom cards or anything like that. Print & Play has become a pretty popular way of trying out games, some of us would be happy to give yours a try.
