The pictures look great! I was hoping the web version would let me play without downloading anything though.

@nbumgardner it... should just work on the browser, the embedded emulator should start automatically. What happened when you opened the itch.io link?
@wendel-scardua I get a black window, and if I click the white arrow that shows up if you hover over the right edge and click it, then I can see the Stallar game cartridge. Clicking it doesn't do anything, double-clicking it puts it away, and clicking the '+' above the game cartridge prompts me for uploading a file.
I've never tried a NES cartridge from a browser before so maybe I'm missing something obvious. I can download the link for the game and reupload it but that doesn't start the game either.
@nbumgardner it must be some browser compatibility issue, because the usual behavior is for the emulator to start the game automatically, no need to click on the arrows or anything... Anyway if you're downloading the rom, you can install any other NES emulator on your computer as well to open it (I recommend Mesen: https://www.mesen.ca/)
Hey! I had the same issue with the emulator not starting- both on Windows/Chrome and Ubuntu/Chrome. Windows/Firefox worked okay. I've got Mesen around so it didn't really stop me of course!
Here's the log of it loading the rom, and everything after:
``` Loading game... app.js:1 app.js:1 PRG ROM: 4 x 16KiB app.js:1 CHR ROM: 1 x 8KiB app.js:1 ROM CRC32: 0xfa1a5a6f app.js:1 ROM MD5: 0xeb317986c97b94473530c19bfadcf4ee app.js:1 Mapper #: 4 app.js:1 Mapper name: MMC3 app.js:1 Mirroring: Vertical app.js:1 Battery-backed: Yes app.js:1 Trained: No app.js:1 Video system: NTSC app.js:1 app.js:1 Power on fceux.js:9 [Deprecation] The ScriptProcessorNode is deprecated. Use AudioWorkletNode instead. (https://bit.ly/audio-worklet) ```
It very briefly shows the "select game prompt" then fades to black afterwards. I've had weird issues with em-fceux before, but I can't say I've ever seen that. Not sure what it could be - very odd!
Anyway on to the feedback!
First off, hey I know those songs! I recognize that cc0 music anywhere, Tedd Kerr/Wolfgang is really talented! I really appreciate that he released those.
This was a fun entry - short but sweet. I managed to beat it with 60 stars (after a good bit of rewind - I wanted to see if there was an end :p). It's always cool to see more retro games in the game jam!
A couple things I noticed and thought I'd mention -- none of these really bring the game down, I just would want to know if it were my game * The music is a little glitchy compared to the originals - if it helps, the times I've run into it in the past it was a prg banking issue with the famitracker/famitone engine. (If your music isn't in a loaded bank 100% of the time, weird glitches happen. I can probably dig up a code sample on how I fixed it for mmc1 if you're curious!) * If I full-height jump from the highest block I can find, I'll wrap into the death plane at the bottom of the screen and die
Thanks for a fun entry!
@cppchriscpp thanks for the feedback :)
I *am* curious about your fix, if it's not much of a hassle I'd like to see it.
About the emulator, I wonder if Chrome changed something because I could swear em-fceux used to work fine on it at some point in the past...
About the lack of an ending, the original plan was to make the random parts more and more difficult (for example, occasionally a goal flag would actually move to ambush the player), so it's still infinite but more likely to end, and also making it more clear that the game is angry at the player "cheating" the original ending.
Unfortunately I've got sick on the last day (and I'm still not fully recovered), so I couldn't do it in time... Maybe I'll do it in a post-jam update.
This was fun. When I first "completed" the game I had a feeling that I missed something. Glad I tried it again :smile:
It's amazing to me when people create stuff that runs on classic hardware. I wish I had a NES device so I could try this is out instead of emulator in browser :smile:
Yeah, good job, fun game!
At first I thought "This is short, and where is the theme?". Then I tried grabbing that final coin, and that's where I realised this is quite brilliant. I just wish there was an end, but nice little bit of deception in this entry and a really good use of the theme!
So cool you made something for the NES. What at first looked like a basic platformer transformed into something more once I found the twist, which was a nice surprise. Graphics are simple yet effective. Game ran fine in firefox. Good job.
Really really really am impressed by yet another NES classic, I wish I had a ROM cartridge to pop this in the olde NES toaster and go for it ! SPOILERS people, the goal is the avoid the goal ! :D
This was really cool! didnt expect to see a NES game on here to play in emulator. Was a fun game too, only suggestion would be making restarting easier (if you accidentally step on goal you'll have to go through the menu and such)
@jvdwijk you have a good point, once you've start playing there's not much reason to go back to the title screen. I'll add this to my TO DO list for a post jam version.
Man, it's really cool that you made a NES game for this. Short, but fun!
Played for you on my [livestream](https://www.twitch.tv/timbeaudet) and almost felt it ended early!
I love how you made a NES game, I'd love to play it on the NES just for the sake of it haha.
I actually had to come back to change some of my ratings cause I was thinking some more and realised how good you actually stuck to the theme.... Beating the game is inevitable.... but you can delay it... Genius take, I love i!
I'm so impressed you were able to put together some Assembly for Ludum Dare! (It seems like the web emulator is broken in Safari too, but Firefox did work.)
Nice.
This game was very troll, but subverted expectations. The variety with each playthrough was also a good addition. Thanks for sharing on stream.
Respect for a NES game written in C and Assembly! I liked it and had much fun, especially the small view move after reaching the goal to show that there is more to see!
Love the music in this, some real GB pokemon vibes! Great twist too. Props on making an NES game!
Nice game! I like the idea, but I felt a little cheated when I was forced to "win" because the three paths you can take are randomized and two of them result in a goal flag with no way to go back :o . I enjoyed the game though!
@renge I understand the feeling - it's "trollish" on purpose - but it's possible to learn which version of that segment is which by the position of the stars by playing multiple runs.
@wendel-scardua interesting. I tried going for the 3 stars every time, but that didn't work. What's the tell?
@renge if the middle path has no stars on it, it's the right path. Otherwise, if the bottom path has no stars, the top path is the correct one.
Just saw your game on twitch stream haha cool mate, very funny concept with inevitable goal :smile_cat:The game, which you definitely don't want to win!
I like this take on the theme. The inevitable win condition is a more positive take than most
after a few attempts I realized that there were just two variations of the "three paths" part, there's actually a few other randomized areas and a different enemy i didn't see the first few times, after a while it does just start looping though
Wayyy more to the game than I thought when i hit the goal the first time, I wish there was a "technical" category, because a NES game with some randomized levels is pretty neat (the platforming needs work though)
Just need more variance in level design, more enemies, and this is a perfect game. I had fun playing it and discovering that there are more levels after the goal and the goal seemed awfully short for something you can absolutely jump over. Great game, had lots of fun, good job!
loved it very surprising game! i totally dig the vibe thanks for sharing it
I'm amazed at the number of times I managed to 'win' while I was TRYING TO AVOID IT, I literally can't win when I try most games xD
However, the idea was really adorable and I loved how you impletemented the theme! The game itself is really cute and I love the NES feels and vibe. AND ITS ABOSLUTELY amazing that you actually even made a real NES game, so hats off to that!
The gameplay is simple, but it works, and if I was better at platformers I would have been able to go further but I'm really good at accidentally touching the goal post xD
Overall well done!!
ROFL I got the last star and went back to the goal, "Yay I won! With extra star! I'm smart!" Then I come back to comment... wait... WAIT THERE'S MORE!? I LOVED how the game was TRYING to make you win. The main antagonist IS winning. I loved it! Great design!
@nbumgardner I've updated my embedded emulator setup, it should work for you now
The game overall is good. Sadly there is no SFX. But i was shocked by fact that this game is actually made for NES...
Thanks for bringing your game by my stream for feedback! If you’d like to revisit the play and commentary you can view the highlight at https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1448039294
Nice work, was fun to play on emulator. Very classic NES audio.
The acceleration on the character took a bit of getting used to, but after that it was a decently fun platformer! Is it possible to add a system that guarantees the same chunk can't generate twice in a row?
@bluishgreenpro yes, it's feasible... Maybe I could even do a "bag" system like Tetris does - taking a list with one of each chunk then shuffling that list.
Always great to see NES emulated games in this jam! It makes it special.
It's a cool game, but I didn't realize it until I saw the comments that it has more things to do, I was like: Okay there is a coin there in the ending, but it could be a mistake or just if you forgot one, you can take that one hahahahahaha
I played the Web Browser edition, but thank you so much for this cool NES experience flashback, loved the graphics and the music :D
What a wild game, I didn't expect any of that. Can't believe it was actually for NES!
Really innovative and original idea, which was also funny! It plays on our expectation as gamers! Gameplay ends up lacking a bit after you progress further, but otherwise a really good entry!
Meu amigo! Que ideia legal! Foi realmente difícil evitar os finais! Minha curiosidade me fez evitar o primeiro GOAL. A moeda realmente foi uma sacada legal para fazer o jogador pular o final. A partir daí ficou complicado. HEHEHE!
Parabéns!
Thanks for submitting your game for me to play on my stream!
If you’d like to rewatch the playthrough, you can find it here: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1450162412?t=09h32m08s
Good luck on your ratings, see you next LD! :D
When I first played it I actually didn't realize the twist. Good thing I came here and read the feedback!
Nice little submission with an interesting take on the theme. Would be cool to see large dynamically made levels but i also understand the amount of work that goes into that. I did get stuck on invisible walls sometimes.
Very interesting concept! The physics and level design need a bit of work though. Very good start!
It's funny. Nice interpretation of theme in the game.
Love the twist you made, where you spend the whole game trying not to win. Here's the VOD: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1453383267 Thanks for submitting!
The concept is interesting, I like it, funny twist, but I think it could have been exploited in a more clever way afterwards like the game actively trying to make you complete it rather that just random chunks of level appearing procedurally that you can beat easily if you know which way is the exit (Which is a little frustrating to have to "win" and come back to pick the right way but I guess it's ok)
And congrats on making a NES game :o
@kaldrin thanks, and although I couldn't make it in time my original plan included stuff like occasional moving goal flags, either falling into the player or even chasing them.
When I played through this at first, I thought it felt too easy and too simplistic. Then, I got to replaying it again, after seeing a coin past the goalpost. From reading the comments, I jumped through the goalpost, and the prompt told me to not do that! Quite funny.
On my fourth playthrough, after passing the goalpost again, the course changed, which kind of surprised me. Overall, it's a clever setup, where the "inevitable" in this case, is basically winning the game. What's also a bonus is that the physics of the player is also well-done. The replayability in this game's good because of the random courses on the other side of the goalpost.
Props to you for taking up the challenge in making an actual NES game! :thumbsup:
Cool plot twist, reminds me of Syobon Action, though you subverted the genre in a novel way that fits the theme.
This might be my favorite game entry for the theme. I was racking my brain for positive interpretations of the theme and I like what you came up with.
