Nice intensity! Shooting bad guys and blowing them up just feels good! And the cam shake of course <3 Music gets a bit intrusive but adds a sense of urgency which fits the game. Maybe it's the instrument choice that's a bit too crushy. It seems a bit overkill to get game over when combo meter goes down - could be fine to let the player stop for a while at the cost of losing the multiplier. Other than that nice game, and impresive that you went for procedural generation in a game jam! :star2:
The controlls feel nice and the gameplay is fun :D. The only complaint i have is that i would get stuck on a side of a platform sometimes
It's very intense! The explosive barrels were satisfying. Was trying my best to keep going and the music added to the urgency. Cool idea! Good Job 😁

Good entry! I like overall design and how it is played. A bit "fast" for me, but I know that my reaction is slow. Also I like that game is randomized a bit on every start.
Amazing job dude! I love your take on the theme. you nailed the game feel which is super important for this type of game. you've also made great improvements in your art. the sfx are great but and the music has the right feel but a bit to blaring. I think the biggest thing that could be improved is the difficulty curve. I love that the game is brutally hard but it would be nice to easy into that brutal difficulty a bit slower. great job!

This is pretty much exectly what I'm looking for in a jam game; all out fast paced action! The music and familiar looking gameplay got my blood pumping! Unfortunately bugs made it a bit difficult for me to enjoy this game. I was getting stuck in walls and the game didn't restart after the third dead. I also wish there was a jump button that's not around the arrows, but next to other action buttons, like console games usually do. With a little tweaking this would be a great little game.
Great job on this one man! Really addicting. Good choice on the combo timer to force the player to keep moving.

Love the concept. It was a bit frustrating that there wasn't a slow ramp up. A wall would be on the second level, and kind of force me to jump down and get right in to things. The meter fell too fast for me to really get my barrings once to see what I could kill fast enough.
Really enjoyable game. If you're planning on polishing it anymore let me know, cause I'm interested in trying again. :)

It was a neat idea, but I felt like it was implemented a bit poorly, with a bit more polishing I feel like the game would instantly be a lot better, so it has potential!

Great game! It is very fun (even if it's a bit hard)! Were you inspired by brofroce for the art style? (Oh by the way you shouldn't make the music restart when the player dies)

Quite addicting! I had hoped for more special things to appear as I got further down (other weapon or other enemies, more obstacles etc). But that didn't keep me from trying again :D The meter could drop a bit slower, but all-in-all a very enjoyable game! Great job!

I really liked the game overall. Maybe adding a bar to the side to tell you how much progress you've made would be nice. But what I most noticed is the floaty jump, maybe make it a bit faster? But yeah the game is really nice to play, addictive.
The only thing that prevented me from playing this a lot more is the difficulty level when you're going through the levels quickly. I think the nature of the layout lends itself to a more methodical pace, but it seems like you want the gameplay to be fast and chaotic. Maybe something as simple as making a chance for only one enemy to spawn on a level? Might empower the player more
I loved the sfx, graphics, and great idea overall!
Oh, I didn't use the grenades much...if you were going for the whole fast-paced thing, maybe you could do a rocket launcher with a really quick projectile speed? idk
Nice work!
Nice concept, but I keep dying on nothing while jumping :)

It was fun, though only once I realised I had to use my arrows keys to move properly. A and D move the character as well.

Good infinity shooter. Solid and simple gameplay and well executed. Congratulations!
Hello! Your game was played during my stream!
If you happened to miss me playing the game, you can go to this spreadsheet to find what timestamp I played your game https://tinyurl.com/yau8hjzn
And then look in my latest videos and find your game being play (after the current stream ends) https://www.twitch.tv/ursagames/videos
I think you have a great start to a game here, though the extent of the systems feels a bit limited. The game's structure makes it difficult to create mid-long term strategies around navigating the level, as having just two enemies on a single floor makes dodging the projectiles prohibitively difficult (given how high the player jumps up into the floor above. I would have really appreciated a shield on the second button, over the grenade. Something to let me react to the projectiles in a definitive way. I liked the bro-force style designs and animation, though I think the music got old quite quickly. Overall, I'd like to see this concept iterated on a bit further. I don't think it would take much to find a really engaging game out of the work you've put into it. Thanks for sharing!

Hi, I liked the mood of this game, it's a particular kind of pixel art it reminds me very closely some early arcade style of the eighties I couln't say which one :) BTW the game is too hard for me, I think It should start a little bit softer and than increase slowly as you progress, anyway I liked the game!

too hard for me, but well made and i like the style of it. keep it up!
:v: I like the art style, but it is quite difficult as everyone say, I'd recommend to some more behaviors when the enemies about to attacks or the combo bar is a bit longer. But it is a nice game, good work !!
Great game, lot's of fun. Glad I got to play it.

Good game! I liked how fast paced it was, every time I died I was glad it was just a space bar away to restart. It was very quick and had that run and gun feel to it! I would like to see more of this in the future. I would suggest including a store or more weapons to pick up along the way, that would really diversify the game play and really bring out the shooting and blowing stuff up. I was afraid of using the grenades, I didn't know if I would get them back and they were kinda slow to use, maybe something more like a rocket would be better. Keep it up!
Gameplay is very difficult. But replayability is instant, kind of like Hotline Miami. I would have loved if each session was tied to a seed, so you would always have the same enemies in that game, and you could like completely master that path and get the rhythm down. I think that would have been neat. And when you restart the whole game it changes the seed. Music was a bit hard to listen to though.

That was a challenging but interesting game! I got a score of 760! The mechanic of keeping up your combo to live I think is something I personally haven't seen before and I found it really cool. I might just be bad at the game but personally I found it quite difficult! As hard as it was, I did keep trying because the gameplay was fun. The instant restarts were very much appreciated! I think this game could really benefit from more feedback from shooting (See: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AJdEqssNZ-U). I liked the simple art and animation! The player, enemies, and obstacles really popped out and was clear to see. Good job!

The gameplay has a very addictive quality, I loved the instant respawns and fast paced gameplay
This really feels like it could have existed as an old arcade game. It took a while to get a sense of how to time things, but after a while I got it. I like the mechanic of breaking through windows (so many windows) It felt like a cheesy action movie in that way. X to shoot didn't work well if you were using ASDW Another shoot button that works with that layout would be good. It was fine with the arrow keys, but you know us PC gamers, we want to customize everything.
Very addicting! This one is difficult and a lot of action-packed fun. The mechanic of navigating between levels is simple yet provides the option to either be thorough in cleaning up each floor, or just quickly blast on down. The music is simple but effective at establishing the mood and pace, although it is pretty repetitive. One little bug I noticed is that occasionally, when I die, spacebar doesn't reset it and I have to refresh the page to keep playing. So far my best score is 1880 but I'm sure I'll come back and top that before too long.. Rad game, I dig it!
EDIT: Reached 3270. This game is too addicting...

Maybe if the music volume was lower then as the combo bar gets lower a raising volume warning sound allows the player audio feedback of when running out of time without having to look at the combo bar and waste a bit of time.
On one occasion, while I was viewing another tab, my combo bar had somehow run out of time but hadn't killed me. This left me able to still play the game without having to worry about the timer. I tried doing it again but it didn't trigger again.
Lastly maybe store a high score locally so you can compare against your best game.
Overall a pretty solid game, keep up the good work!
Game feels good to play, and I think it's quite unique. Really smooth and enjoyable gameplay, it was a fun experience! Shooting was fun and the positioning of your player to fall down the levels to shoot more was great. I did, however find it quite hard to get on a roll, then the roll ended too fast for my liking. Thing to improve: the audio could be improved, and a 3 hearts system for account for the difficulty (easy 3 hearts, medium 2, hard 1), and maybe a better control scheme (to make it easier to play). It is a great game and it was fun to play!

This is great - I only managed 610 though. I found it quite hard, though that might just be my skill level. This is just the sort of game that would benefit from an online high score, would really draw people back.
My only suggestion re the controls would be perhaps allow jumps when you're a few pixels above a platform. I think miss-timed jumps were my main killer, and if these were a bit more forgiving you could build up a really nice rhythm dropping down / evade / shot etc..
Altogether a solid entry! Really enjoyed it.

Nice job with the game! Not sure what you could do about it, but a minor balancing issue I found is that it's super op keep shooting and going down. You shoot fast enough to kill dudes as you pass, whilst staying in their firing range for as little time as possible. I still really love the gameplay, and I think this game would benefit immensely from an online leaderboard, to flex your progress. The combo timer is a super cool touch, it felt really cool taking out enemies so quickly. Overall the game is awesome, congrats!

Good game, jump is a bit floaty (though probably intended), gun sounds are a bit loud compared to the music and maybe each floor could be a little bit wider. Very fun though!
2020-04-24 16:39
As a hardcore game lover, I really liked this game. The shooting felt satisfying on its own and the jump feels good to me. Dying in a hit is actually what I really liked. Since you can restart quickly dying doesn't feel that heavy.
Simple and fun (graphics remind me CONTRA a little), very difficult but i like the idea ! Good job !

Only thing that actually feel like it need improvement is the character movement. He needs to drop faster down so you dodge bullets, and don't get stuck on the side of the floor panels. Jumping also should be bit more responsive. Other than that the game is fun and fast paced and could easily be expanded upon with powerups, more variety, enemies, weapons etc.

Super fast-paced, loved every second of it. the meter-mechanic really pushed me, usually a very safe player, to really go for risky strats. I noticed two things: 1) In the menu, the tips should either be their own screen, vanish after a while or when something else is klicked. Because when you open them and then open up the hints, they are still there and its a chaotic mess. :D 2) The arcade-y sound effect when the player dies is really quiet, i only noticed it when i died for the like fourth or fifth time.

This was fun, I especially liked the subgame of just ninjaing past everything as quickly as possible, maybe even more fun than the core gameplay lol. Be cool if there was a bottom but I suppose this leaves infinite enjoyment lol. Good job.

I would like to thank all of you for your feedback and for playing Tower of BOOM. I have taken all of your feedback into consideration and will be releasing a patched version of the game (with some new content as well.....) after the jam. I hope all of you did enjoy the game and I thank you for your critical feedback.
Also, @caberu to answer your question, yes. I was inspired by Broforce for the art style. @entropymaximizer that's a great high score man. Glad to see you liked the game a lot :)

Loved the animaitons of the main character! It gets really addictive and I just want to go deper and deeper! Well done on congratulations on your first Ludum Dare! The only thing I would add wou;d be anotyher kind of enemy with a different projectile to shoot at me! It would be a lot of fun on mobile in portrait mode, seing all floors underneath you!
Thanks for bringing your game to my stream for us to check out. If you'd like to watch again, the highlight is at https://www.twitch.tv/videos/617290858

I'm happy to inform you all that I have uploaded a post-jam version of Tower of BOOM on itch which is available for windows and WebGL. I have taken your feedback and tried to address many of the issues present in the game along with adding some new things ( like a kick which servers as a melee attack and allows you to drop-kick grenades). I will still continue to update the game from here as there is a lot more I have planned. Thanks for being a part of this game :)
