LD47 — Stuck in a loop

Friday Night Funkin by Cameron Taylor 2020-10-06T05:58:23Z

i love it! I haven't played many rhythm games partially because its just so frustrating to see a bunch of notes while sightreading and not know what they're supposed to sound like, but the call-and-response here was perfect training wheels that made this so much fun! this game is like the suzuki method for rhythm games

LD48 — Deeper and deeper

Monkey Quest by paulloz 2021-05-06T23:43:59Z

so cute!! great art, lots of nice music. I thought the deaths were a bit too punishing (but I came back and beat the game so maybe not!) Really great work!

MineWell by superpokeunicorn 2021-05-05T22:33:53Z

a fun little action puzzler! love the main character animations. I didn't expect the levels to be as handcrafted and puzzle-y as they were, but that wasn't a bad thing; I enjoyed it. It took me a bit to realize the bugs were turn-based, not time-based. that diamond at the end of level 2 is so mean haha.

nice job!

Manic Miner by ryannielson 2021-05-01T20:00:35Z

yesss love seeing more pico-8 games :D

I like the graphics a lot (I played this game because of the thumbnail), and the palette swapping is a nice touch. The mechanics are nice and simple (maybe a bit too simple? I played one run and then was done) and overall this is neat, tiny, well-executed game. nice job! high score: 419

Manic Miner by ryannielson 2021-05-01T22:48:10Z

@ryannielson oh wow your first pico-8 game? impressive work! it looks so so stylish

Adelie - Rolling in the Deep by Meep 2021-05-01T20:24:10Z

yess more pico-8 games! This was really fun -- I wish I had played it legit instead of hacking in extra stats after dying the first time haha.

The concept is really solid, I think with just a little something more in the second-to-second gameplay it would be really fun to play, even at the start when you have bad stats. But I would say that about Isaac too and hey that game is wildly popular so what do I know.

I think I will play this again later, actually. and like: whoa nice work you made a compo game that I want to play again?? excellent excellent job!

Oh I almost forgot - I LOVE that water effect and I will absolutely be keeping that trick in my back pocket. Really great visuals all-around. (although the map is a bit hard to see)

Adelie - Rolling in the Deep by Meep 2021-05-04T15:29:10Z

ha, beat it without hacking this time! had a lot of fun

Recursive Dreams by LoHii 2021-05-01T20:32:23Z

I found the mechanics a bit confusing - It was hard for me to have a sense of space of where I was in the game overall... but it didn't seem necessary for the part I played, so it was fine. I quit without beating that screenshot that ultimatewalrus posted (a few messages up) -- it was too hard and the hitboxes weren't clear / too big IMO.

this game was INCREDIBLY cute tho; amazing work on the art!

Ludophile by Jack Lance 2021-04-27T00:28:06Z

This was so fun!! really clever use of the theme, and excellent execution. I particularly liked the library and the puzzle to get into town -- some really clever uses of the filesystem to support the game world.

Two spoilerish things: (https://rot13.com/) * V sbhaq Ovyy gur Oht irel svefg naq raqrq hc fxvccvat n ynetr frpgvba bs gur tnzr orpnhfr bs vg * V qvq n shyy onex-ynhtu jura V sbhaq Eryrnfr\Cebwrpg_ohvyq\Yhqbcuvyr\ybt ununun

Some notes for anyone else playing this: * I unzipped this with 7zip and it worked (mostly) fine * You should probably unzip this in as high a directory as possible; I unzipped mine directly into C:\ (after the first place I unzipped it had problems) * 7zip didn't seem to unzip the links correctly, I had to `cat foo.lnk` in my terminal to see where the link led

Wiki Vortex by impbox 2021-04-26T05:11:13Z

very cool interpretation of the theme! The restrictions are really neat; I did my first run and got all three objectives, but then I realized I had sped through it and knew absolutely _nothing_ about "Milorad PetroviA‡". There are a few wikipedia games I know of, but this is the first time one has encouraged me to read and learn about obscure topics instead of just clicking links blindly; very nicely done. I will strategize better on my next run!

DRLLVINATION 👁 by TRASEVOL_DOG 2021-05-01T23:55:56Z

really cool graphics! I like how you get more color the more thingies you've collected the more colorful the screen gets. I would have liked some more mechanics, but overall the game is super stylish and well put-together.

Keke in the "Caves of Peril!" by Hempuli 2021-04-28T12:33:51Z

I'm loving this! excellent puzzles that hit hard and require careful thought. I'm quitting for now but I'll definitely come back and finish the last ~1/3 of the game another day!

Seven Sleepy Nights by Osterzone 2021-04-27T02:14:46Z

Nice! Unique interpretation, I like it! I like all the little annoyances, like the fact that you need to open the blinds to cool down the room (which interacts with the floodlight), and the fact that the phone interrupts you when it doesn't matter, and doesn't interrupt you when it does.

LAYERS by Le Slo 2021-04-27T01:59:24Z

I love all the tiny sound effects you used; they work so well! I think my favorite is the ice sound.

Fallumns by Logan 2021-04-28T00:32:21Z

this was so much fun!! for anyone who bounced off: I recommend sticking around until at least level 2, it has a cool new mechanic that completely changes how it feels to play. I don't particularly care for match-3s in general but this one was worth it!

BulletWell by SecretPocketCat 2021-05-02T04:05:42Z

nice game! The bullet catching was pretty unique and interesting; it feels like playing dodgeball. The mechanics or enemies felt like they could use a little extra something, but the core of the game is really solid. I was impressed to learn this was mostly all stock art; it meshes together so well!

https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1007659333?t=07h48m42s

DIGIDIG by NekuSoul 2021-05-04T18:40:52Z

really neat idea! those equals signs are tricky. first run: dead, what is going on. second run: 77 / E. third: 44 / D. 4th run: 2021_05_04_11_38_31_356_chrome.png

Was that sss win chime ever so slightly different than the others? nice touch

I like how the holes at the top remain between runs, adds a nice sense of realness to the world somehow.

great work! love seeing cool pico-8 games like this :)

Tooth Toss by MadNukin 2021-05-04T20:09:05Z

WOW this is polished. the backgrounds and music and all the sprites (the main character is buff as hell aww yeahhh), and the few frames of movement leeway after you pick up the sword were all really excellent.

Making the weapon to fall to the ground if stuck in a wall or ceiling would have been nice, especially at that one part ;)

it was really fun to learn to use the big ole sword! I get the feeling that you can move it without it ever hitting the ground, or possibly use it to fly, but I didn't get _quite_ good enough to check.

https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1008218448?t=03h10m49s

Micronaut by healthire 2021-05-14T07:12:42Z

really cool! great use of the theme :) I bet I would have found making mistakes too punishing if this were a bigger game, but it worked well in a game of this size; I enjoyed it a lot! really cute ending too -- not what I expected but it fits excellently

The Frozen Deep by Mads 2021-04-27T00:59:15Z

really neat! It reminds me of an old flash game I played where you look at many 1-D slices of pictures, and need to piece them together in your mind and figure out what the full 2-D picture is. A few thoughts: * The map seemed like it would be confusing if I paid attention to it, so I ignored it. * I didn't like that one big gap that you had to jump precisely for; I expected to need to use my Q/E ability somehow but nope actually it was just a precise timing thing. But the note beforehand was good; if it hadn't been there, I probably would have gone backtracking looking for something else * I was a bit confused by the items in the background -- they didn't look visually distinct from the items that I was able to pick up.

Thanks for the game, nice job!

The Greatest Thing by PBG 2021-05-04T15:55:28Z

Nice platforming, especially the walljump. The orb was super frustrating; it might have been nice if there was a bit more story so it was more obvious that that was on purpose? e.g. listening to the character anticipate and then react to the orb, and then have a game over screen saying "you were killed by greed". (I mean, probably don't do that exactly; sounds a bit heavy-handed. But something in that vein.) nice game!

Drilbert by wheybags 2021-05-01T20:08:21Z

nicely done! interesting mechanic, and well-explored. I would have liked the ability to undo, load my previous progress, and for the controls to be a bit... different, somehow. (idk how, some UX wizardry so that you can turn and move with a single button when you want to, but only turn when you don't want to move. I have no idea how to solve this problem, but the controls as they are kept irking me)

really nicely done! I enjoyed this a lot, especially the extra levels

https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1007659333?t=01h52m12s

Drilbert by wheybags 2021-05-01T22:45:48Z

I'd love to see you play mine too, if you'd like! Unfortunately I didn't play the final levels of your game on stream, but I played for a good 20~40 minutes, I think.

hehe thank you re: Inbox Unbox! Thanks for reaching out; I'll write down your email!

Mine Zhero by Colisan 2021-05-02T03:03:31Z

This is really interesting! I love the way that you sometimes want to mine some blocks but sometimes don't, leading to interesting conundrums of your own making, in a wilmot's-warehouse sort of way. The controls felt very very clunky to me; I eventually settled on doing a weird claw hold with my left hand on space+m+l and my right hand on the arrow keys.

I had a lot of fun pushing my luck and never actually scoring any points  but just now I played again for another half an hour or so and managed to get a big payout; ~6 +15s! those top scores are something else though...

I'm glad I tried this again offstream when I'm more focused; the gameplay is super interesting, in an emergent sort of way. And after playing again, I'm agreeing again with what you said on stream: your game reminds me of some of my games :) Really fun to play!

Stabalot by bw_devel 2021-05-05T22:00:56Z

oh dear, that gets very difficult! I like it. Maybe I should try on keyboard instead of controller. Great work with pico-8! And a very bizarre and cool use of theme

Deep Mine by NateTheGreat 2021-05-07T03:13:08Z

the tech here is really impressive! thanks for sharing the code; I'll have to check it out sometime. Nice game built on top of the engine too; I love motherload and this scratches that itch -- I got down to 3174m.

Diving Bubble by thesnide 2021-05-04T18:29:17Z

nice! interesting, unique gameplay. A bit hard to change colors. Nice work for 4 hours!!

ooh, thank you @nekusoul ; I've also been looking for other pico-8 games and didn't realize it was that easy!

The Elephant in the Room by CeeJap 2021-05-18T01:28:34Z

really cute! love that drinking animation. I thought it was a bit too punishing; maybe a checkpoint at the beginning of each room would have been nice? But I see you've already made some changes to help with that. nice work; love to see more pico-8!

Miner Vitalya by Cardboard Box 2021-05-04T17:13:02Z

pico-8 :D great sfx and visuals; I particularly like the rainy game over effect. The fact that you had to jump before drilling seemed odd to me, but I suppose I got used to it eventually. really nice game!

Bunny Bunny Dig Dig by ZakAmana 2021-05-07T00:12:52Z

I only ever found 1 diamond, and I reached the bottom! I'm glad there _was_ a bottom or I might still be stuck playing, probably hurting my hand. Amazing polish on this! Nicely done

To the Center of the Earth by oda 2021-05-04T18:08:57Z

nice! the inverted controls, the drone of digging, and the death sound all contributed to an interesting immersive mood

Chthonic Brilliance by cassowary 2021-05-12T19:42:11Z

nice! I wish movement was faster, but I may just be spoiled from playing too many puzzlescript games haha. Some really nice levels in there. Nice work making all the levels and mechanics i just 48 hours!!

Deep Dive in Hyperspace by TaliOS 2021-05-04T18:00:29Z

I'm glad I read the description - I was about to quit but the game got a lot better when I read that dashing though asteroids would give me health! it makes for an interesting risk/reward type of dynamic. I like how in stage 4 ish there were a lot of asteroids, which sounds like it would be bad but actually was very good.

stage 7 reminded me a bit of the vvvvvv gravitron

nice work! love to see pico-8 games :D

Deep Dungeon Tactics by Aditya Kumar 2021-05-02T18:56:55Z

solid game you've got here! Solid game system, really nice graphics, nice music. I think I might prefer things to be a lot "smaller" and more puzzle-y; like, divide all the players stats (health, movement range) by about 10, and rebalance the enemies/hallways/etc to fit. No idea if this would actually _work_ at all, it's just one of the only concrete things that feels a bit off to me (although it's mainly a matter of personal taste, I think). Nicely done, this was fun!

Knee deep in jelly by Johan Alexandersson 2021-05-04T17:20:00Z

beautiful tileset! nice work. I also escaped out of the map through a hole in the wall, which was fun. there are a LOT of jellyfish down here 0.o

(btw, I think your itch.io game is embedded at a bad size; it's skewing the pixels in the font if you're not playing in fullscreen. If you change it to 750x680 that should fix it -- that's the [recommended size (search for itch.io)](https://www.lexaloffle.com/pico-8.php?page=manual))

Ocelot Safari by pancelor 2021-04-26T10:00:28Z

Thanks for the feedback everyone! I've had a meal and a nice lie down, and I've made a couple small fixes: * the campfires were WAY too punishing; I got some event handlers mixed up and you basically insta-died in v1.0 if you weren't near a campfire. I've fixed that now; campfires are still very important but quite a bit more lenient. * the other 4 bugfixes are smaller; you can read the changelog here: https://pancelor.itch.io/ocelot-safari/devlog/246780/v11-minimal-bugfixes

It's absolutely true that a tutorial would help; that and music were the two big things I wished I could have added within the time limit! I'm going to add some more explanation somewhere; either tutorial text on this page, or a video tutorial, idk. (I hope that's within the spirit of the jam?)

Ocelot Safari by pancelor 2021-04-26T21:44:12Z

@noam-zeise thank you for calling that out! there was a bad bug with nighttime that snuck in; I've fixed it now. I've also added some tutorialization in the game's description; thanks to everyone who suggested it!

Ocelot Safari by pancelor 2021-04-26T21:47:19Z

@osterzone thank you :D The weekend was a bit of a haze and honestly idk how it turned out so well; it's certainly much improved from my initial art! (https://twitter.com/i/status/1386190295574876164)

Ocelot Safari by pancelor 2021-04-26T21:51:36Z

@impbox thanks for playing! I wish the game was a bit shorter; the ocelots become more relevant the further into the jungle you bring your tools, especially at night. (or maybe you're just a natural pro at scaring them off?)

Ocelot Safari by pancelor 2021-04-29T00:00:47Z

@le-slo ooh, I think you got close! I'd have liked to add a progress meter but couldn't find the time; oh well. I'm glad you figured out the alternate purpose for the rocks! My original plan was to have the game revolve around building temporary bases at night (which is still helpful, just not super necessary) Thanks for playing :) (and ty for pointing out the sound bug; I hadn't noticed that)

@logan OH NO :joy_cat:

@ everyone leaving nice and helpful comments: thank you! This post-jam sense of community is really fun

Ocelot Safari by pancelor 2021-05-18T19:55:48Z

@blackopsben: LOL no you're the first! ahahaha

@wheybags: thank you!! always fun to watch other people play :) gg! That's a really excellent point about "a lot of front-loaded learning, followed by a lot of execution" -- I hadn't thought of gating something behind the first river but wow yeah I like that idea a lot!

@meep: thank you for all the feedback! ooh, I like the idea of arranging stones or wood into barriers/enclosures... in fact, I like it so much that that's exactly how the game already works! ;) that particular mechanic is probably the least clear out of all of them, and it's not as necessary as I was originally planning, so I'm not surprised it went unnoticed.

@ everyone: thank you so much for all the feedback! When I published it I had some vague ideas of things I wished were different (music, nighttime action, midgame balance, ending sequence, softlocks?, tutorial) and it's been so fun and helpful to hear all your stories and suggestions from playing my game :) I'll likely publish a post-jam expanded version sometime (find my twitter in my profile if you want to hear about that, etc etc). See you next ludum dare!

Diggleoid by zep 2021-05-04T19:11:39Z

nice mechanics and lovely music! (and thank you for the awesome+cozy tool!)

Y-Sokombanator by --0 2021-05-14T10:21:19Z

I tried playing this on stream but was way too distracted to figure out the pure sokoban intro puzzles... but I just came back and played it all the way through on my own just now, and I'm very glad I did! pure sokoban is not always my cup of tea, but the extra twist and the puzzle design kept it exciting and interesting for the whole playthrough.

I particularly liked this room; I messed it up in the obvious way when I first got to it, and then had to undo a whole bunch and think about it more carefully when I realized my mistake later, which was a good learning moment:

Untitled.png

I would have liked the keyrepeat to activate sooner at the start and activate less quickly during the repeat, (with maybe an exception for turbo-fast undo?) but that's a minor thing; overall I really enjoyed this! stellar work; I was hoping to see some recursive puzzles like this and this game did not disappoint

Super Mole Racing by Mastoast 2021-05-04T18:12:56Z

really nice job! cute mole, excellent tunes, fun physics. fun to see other people's pico-8 stuff :D

Anchors & Miners by Yolwoocle 2021-04-27T10:28:08Z

nice! glad to see other pico-8 games :)

What's going on with the very bottom row of the screen? I'd like it if the incoming blocks were visible, even when they aren't fully onscreen yet

Cutting Edge by Notan Lemon 2021-04-26T07:10:24Z

nicely done! I really enjoyed the design of the last level -- multiple easily-made mistakes, but ultimately I was able to winnow away impossibilities and solve it

Explory Story by Blue Pin Studio 2021-05-02T03:31:15Z

really really cool! I had a lot of fun with it. I'm not sure how well this would work as a bigger game (I think I might get annoyed trying to randomly stumble into the key/door for too much longer), but it works really well at the size it is now. I liked how I eventually started to be able to recognize threats before I activated them

Also, I'm dying to know; what's the entrance noise? I swear I recognize it -- it's the one when sherlock pops out of the door; right near this timestamp: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1007659333?t=07h09m31s

Is it the same noise that plays when you exit to map in sonic adventure 2 battle?? This next video clip is the best example I can find - it's the sound that plays as the screen fades to white (at 7:15), but the youtuber cuts it off early I think, plus it's very quiet and difficult to hear: [video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0e6kB2q5X4o&t=435)

Red Archer by BadPiggy 2021-05-02T20:06:52Z

LOVE the art style; 3d but pixel :ok_hand:

I feel like the game could use a little extra something in the mechanics/enemies/levels or something, idk. (you know, if you had had infinite time - nice work making this as fast as you did!) The length of the game as-is seemed perfect, and I had fun playing

Hellevator by baconn00 2021-05-04T19:50:18Z

This was incredible; I usually make my games with puzzley mechanics first and add polish/mood/etc later, so I can't possibly imagine coming up with this idea; I would have thrown it out because the mechanics don't sound interesting. But WOW it's 100% mood and it is GOOD.

I really like the decision to not draw a line between the current and previous mouse positions, forcing you to etch the sigils slowly and deliberately. Forcing me to mash space must have been a similarly deliberate choice, but I wish that one was less hand-hurting somehow... maybe by making it more clear to the player when they were going max speed and didn't need to power the generator anymore? anyway, amazing work!

https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1008218448?t=02h27m37s

DEEPER by eboatwright 2021-05-04T18:23:10Z

really cool! Clear downwell inspiration, but your own nice take on the concept. I love how fast it is; this is probably my favorite downwell-like I've played this jam. There's a bit of a broken strat where you hug either wall, shooting as necessary and collecting an occasional ammo pickup -- I think it'd be nice if some bricks were unbreakable. anyway, really nice work! love the graphics too

dang, I dunno what my high score is because the "restart" button is the same as the "shoot" button and i tried to shoot but died and then restarted instead. at least 8000 tho. Are there health pickups? I thought I saw some early on but when I needed them later i couldn't find any

Rex's Wizardspace by RexTGun 2021-05-01T20:11:21Z

Nice! I had fun with this. I noticed eventually that my wand had a pretty long range, but it took me a while to realize. Some really funny moments in this one, and it was fun to just jump around

I liked the firefighting minigame ;)

Scatter Gold by Sthealthinator 2021-05-01T23:03:30Z

I liked the graphics a lot, and I'm not sure I understand why, which is a strange feeling. good work! the physics felt a bit sluggish and the restarting was way too slow for me, especially given how often I died. Some checkpoints would have been very very nice; some of the levels felt too long. I got stuck on the last screenshot you posted in the description because I pushed the box against the wall, and that's where I quit. thanks for the game!

(this feedback is all from trying the game again offstream -- good suggestion, it completely fixed my jumping issues!)

https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1007659333?t=04h07m50s

edit: oh! I also liked the font; especially the "i" because it was so strange :)

Frog by cacciatc 2021-05-01T23:18:05Z

what a fun little game!! LOVE the music, and I'm always impressed with people programming for old consoles. I hear NES dev is baaasically just programming in assembly, which sounds pretty rough. If you'd had more time I would have loved to see some more levels/mechanics/enemies/something, idk. great graphics! and the fade-ins/fade-outs work great; not sure how hard that is on your console but I know for me (on pico-8) it can be a bit tricky. thanks for the game! :saxophone: :frog:

PANEMUAN by etrealjunior 2021-05-02T03:07:17Z

very nice little story! I'm not sure if I experienced it all; you said on-stream that I had missed an ending, but it took a bit too much time to get back for me to want to go back and find it...

I love that you're telling a vulnerable, heartfelt story here; the world could use more games like this :)

Pale Dwarf Adventures by SinusQuell 2021-05-02T18:41:52Z

I had a lot of fun with this game! the jump physics were not fun for me, but that wasn't an issue once I realized that the strat is to die every time. I also thought the early game was a bit slow, but I was able to get through it so maybe I'm actually just wrong about that. I had a lot of fun discovering strats that made the game a very different game from the one I was expecting. Really nice work! I enjoyed this a lot

Sub-Uber-Marine by extar 2021-05-06T21:49:35Z

great game! my first run was rough (one delivery) but once I got a feel for the map I had a lot of fun; made $640 on my second run! I love the bubbles that come out behind the sub, and the schools of fish, and all the other little details like this that really made the game feel alive. I wish the HUD message box wasn't so large, or that it went away sooner. Really great adaptation of crazy taxi to pico-8!

this is too cute!! one of my favorites so far; this game has so much STYLE

Flat Pack Piles by Zachary Barbanell 2021-05-01T20:36:40Z

good work on your first pico-8 game! I love seeing more pico-8 puzzle games :)

I found it a bit too repetitive to figure out the implied puzzle, but I recognize that there's an interesting puzzle at the heart of this game that I did not fully solve. nice job!

Ziggurat by nethead 2021-05-07T00:22:43Z

incredible work with the graphics and mood! very nice to play. I liked the climb mechanic, it was easy to understand and fun to use. I accidentally got the ending without quite realizing what was going on; maybe if the other character had been teased/hinted at earlier then it might have been more satisfying? anyway, really great work, especially for a compo entry, wow!!

DeepRoots by GoodMan233 2021-05-04T18:58:13Z

This started out really nice! I liked the levels up until level 8 or 9 ish; the mazes were easier and not particularly challenging, and the darkness just annoyed me... It made the levels harder, but not in an enjoyable way for me, compared to the cool puzzles you had up to that point. One of my favorite puzzles was in a dark level, but I would have preferred it not have the darkness. (the second to last level, I think?)

I finished the game to the end; nice work! some nice puzzles and a solid entry!

Deep Dig Pizza by Brandon Garcia 2021-05-01T20:17:52Z

fantastic genre mashup, and excellent polish! this could be a full game; motherload was an excellent game and this takes the original formula in a very interesting direction

I liked how the game had a progress meter ("day 1/4") -- that's something I should have put in my game!

I wish there weren't separate levels, but instead a single infinite/large level so that your past choices stuck around.

Thanks for the game!

that was fun! I would have liked a bit deeper gameplay but WOW the art and the voiceover and the menus and all of the polish/juice/etc were stellar!

Surface Level by javi7 2021-05-01T19:40:43Z

holy cow this is AMAZING!! I was about to go back through the games I played onstream to leave ratings, and I got sucked back in and played this for another 30min just now

I love the mechanics, and the feeling of building up speed and trying not to mess it up as the level comes at you faster and faster. The music works so well, and it's the main thing that kept me playing long enough to figure the game out. I have a lot of tiny little notes that I'm about to dump right here, in case they're helpful to you, but overall WOW I am blown away this is such a cool game

Okay so a bunch of small suggestions: * the colors of the background are a bit confusing; the (passable) dark blue can shelves look too similar to the (impassable) dark blue blocks, and the bright green produce bins stand out too much, given that they're passable * I'd love a speedrun timer integrated in-game, and a quick-reset button in the pico-8 menu * the phone call button is a bit awkward to hit, especially when I'm trying to always be speeding up or slowing down at the same time. I mentioned this onstream, but today I'm finding it easier to hit, so I think I'm retracting my suggestion that the L/R buttons should be removed, since they do add interesting gameplay now that I'm good enough to use them haha. Actually, I've just had an idea: what if pressing jump while midair did a spin; this frees up the spin button, which could instead become the phone call button! that might work * It might be fun to have some incentive to hit the spin button juuuust before you hit a rail, e.g. some sort of speed boost or points boost * I looked at the notifications at the top of the screen hardly at all; maybe small flyaway text right where the character was would be more visible? but of course maybe you don't want it to get in the way * To really get a high score, as far as I can tell the strat is to go really slow, grind multiple times on the same rail to get your combo up, and come to a slow grinding finish at the end of the level. (I can get 9K points on the first level by doing this) I'm a bit conflicted about this; personally I'd rather the game encouraged me to get that blinding rush of speed by trying to go as fast as possible, BUT if you go too slow while grinding for score you can't make it to the next rail, so it's an interesting tension. So like, I guess it's fine? I think I'd remove the ability to grind multiple times on a single rail, that seems a bit exploit-y to me. there's that one bottom-route tunnel on level 2 or 3 where you can get 10x combo pretty easily with this

urg sorry for the wall of backseat-gamedesign; your team did an incredible incredible job and probably a bunch of my suggestions would break things in ways I can't anticipate. they're just some random suggestions from a fan! thank you for the game!

The power of the deep by Tris250 2021-05-01T23:21:09Z

thanks for the game! Some of the sprites (like the powerups) were hard to see. The tradeoff between powering up and dying is a really neat idea, and the player sprite is really nice

Wormy's Dangerous Dig by PavelC 2021-05-04T19:03:49Z

nice twist on snake! I liked the fire pit in level 5; I nearly dove right in! I like how lenient the game was; if I only had 1 life I dunno if I would have replayed after getting hit, but I made it to the end and enjoyed it :)

Where's my dynoMITE? [LD48] by miej 2021-05-02T19:55:20Z

really fun! the mechanic was interesting, and the level design had multiple really good surprises that I wasn't expecting.

I really like how lenient you made the game; I can easily see someone making an alternate version of this game where if you hit the player against a wall too hard, you die and have to restart. But nope, no impact damage! and in fact, no consequence for dying at all, once I finally figured out how to do that! (well, maybe I missed a special "you win" screen or something). And yeah, that version of the game would be much worse IMO; the leniency in this game is perfectly suited for the vibe this game creates. feels like this could be a classic flash game. really nice work!

nice! I liked the idea; I think it could have been pushed further somehow, where I would be required to delve pretty deep and then back out to figure out where to go. Maybe hard mode _is_ this, and I just got lucky on my one run? nice work, and I am interested in checking out raylib so thank you for the source code!

Deep Pocket Digs by ChrisAP 2021-05-01T19:53:28Z

I like the concept! It seems like a game where the "normal" movement is punishingly slow, to encourage you to master the fast-paced and fun part of the game: the digging. Sorta like the sonic games.

I unfortunately didn't make it to mastery tho; I think I might have stuck with it longer if the mechanics were a bit more intuitive (maybe being able to enter drill-mode at any time?) or if the physics were more responsive somehow (being able to change speed mid-air would be especially nice), or if the music was more catchy. But nice work, and thank you for sharing! I liked the secret path :)

The Depths by Hydrogen8 2021-05-04T15:43:23Z

nice! love seeing more pico-8 games :) I really like how the "get hurt" animation is just gasping in shock and losing air, instead of blood or something.

Unto the Eight by Threeli 2021-05-14T10:36:33Z

I love the visual style, and I like the idea of the game but there was just a liittle bit too much friction for me to have beaten it -- no keyrepeat, and the fire and warmth were quite difficult to manage. I want to make exploratory runs into the darkness, but the fire goes out so quickly and it's so hard to see anything that it doesn't feel like I'm getting enough useful information in exchange for how many times I had to mash the buttons to move. (IMO the fire/warmth stuff might be balanced fine as it is currently, if only the controls were less taxing)

I ended up making an autohotkey script to help (somewhat) with the keyrepeat, and I think I figured out the source+destination of 3 different parcels? I love the feeling of unknown as I explored the edges of the map and realized just how tall the map is... I didn't make it to the top. Hmm, the game reminded me a bit of Sunless Sea, now that I'm thinking about that feeling specifically...

I do think I want to come back and work at beating this later; it seems like it would be rewarding to beat! I'll await the expanded version, although if I get the urge I may beat the jam version in the meantime!

I also didn't realize I was playing the game for 3~6 encounters; I thought I was in an opening cutscene. my second run made a lot more sense and was fun!

love the take on the theme! and always happy to see pico-8 games :)

Deep Diver! by AlexanderZone 2021-05-04T17:52:28Z

fun! The fact that hearts are the number of dives I have left (instead of health) was confusing, but after I figured out what the game was I had a good time playing. always good to see more pico-8 games :D

(btw, I think your itch.io game is embedded at a bad size; it’s skewing the pixels in the font if you’re not playing in fullscreen. If you change it to 750x680 that should fix it – that’s the [recommended size (search for itch.io)](https://www.lexaloffle.com/pico-8.php?page=manual))

Rabbit Rappel by MatterLinx 2021-05-04T20:24:55Z

really cool! beautiful lighting, fun gameplay

I thought the levels were a bit samey, and I'd have preferred something new to make it exciting (new enemies? moving platforms? being able to rocket jump out of a swing and detach the rope?) instead of lack-of-checkpoints to make the game harder

oh yeah! that MUSIC change was really really good

nice work!

Infinite Descent by BluishGreenPro 2021-04-28T01:22:11Z

nice! I found the walljump to be quite low but overall I enjoyed it! I'm not sure exactly how the world was structured after getting 100%; was there a single sequence of visually distinct rooms that repeated, or was every loop split into two halves, each of which looked pretty similar to the other half? ...actually, now that I'm thinking about it, I think I was just confused by that first room (the one you revisit again later in the loop)

Turnip Brothers by oysuta 2021-05-05T23:15:54Z

B.R.E.A.K - Bad Robot Enjoys Attacking Krew! by pxlshk 2021-05-05T23:32:44Z

pico-8 :D nice physics! felt good to play. I personally didn't enjoy playing as a rampaging murderer, but I don't really have other complaints besides that. solid entry; nice job!

[HTML5] Bodenhorizont by minotalen 2021-04-27T11:07:19Z

this was surprisingly compelling! calm beautiful graphics, and the gameplay balance felt well-tuned; I played this a lot longer than I expected to because I was so close! nicely done with the engine; it's fun to see very non-sokoban stuff like this made in puzzlescript. A nice meditative experience :)

Beepo's Shop by itsBoats 2021-04-29T22:47:35Z

really nice game! I got all 10 relics. (I almost forgot that I needed to leave, and nearly missed that nice animation!) I love the graphics and sounds: clean and minimal, but still doing exactly what they need to.

I think there's a bug with the hull; I was able to move upwards basically any amount of tiles without taking damage (moving up, but not directly to the surface), but moving sideways would still damage me.

I have some questions about the design of the game's systems... I was surprised that you could dig upwards; is this just an easier Motherload? Ah, but then I realized you zoomed through already-dug hallways, taking damage -- neat! I wonder how this affects the gameplay! but... moving through hallways takes the same amount of gas as digging through dirt? That seems odd, and also it doesn't encourage digging careful tunnels. It seems to me that the zooming mechanic is the main difference between this and motherload, so it's a shame that mechanic doesn't change the gameplay very much.

Is there any point to upgrading your drill? the ores are pretty worthless, compared to the gold that's everywhere.

I hope this doesn't sound to negative! I really enjoyed the game as-is, you did some great work. I suspect I just prioritize mechanics over chill atmosphere. (The atmosphere _was_ very chill!) great game!

Demolition Mouse by lonewookie 2021-10-15T20:53:36Z

fun! love to see pico-8 games :D

I wish the game didn't reset me all the way back to level 1 when I gameovered, but it was mostly fine since the game is short. It'd also be nice if I didn't have to wait for the drills to start moving at the start of each level before the screen would scroll.

I like the core gameplay a lot; it's quite compelling. I'd love to play more levels (especially if the physics were tweaked so I felt more in-control of my character). The art is really great; I particularly like the drills, the background bricks, and the background door.

Bullet Hellements by Fiote 2021-10-17T14:56:01Z

pretty fun! I like how you tied the theme into the game mechanics in a really integral way.

(why is this tagged on itch as a puzzle game? "Shooter" or "Action" would be more appropriate)

SCANLINE by pdotjpg 2021-10-17T14:45:15Z

I wish it was easier to recover from dying -- undo, or faster movement speed, or smaller levels. (I stopped after dying to the 6-door-gauntlet level) I also find it a bit weird to have realtime elements (especially ones so punishing) in a sokoban game, but that's probably just a difference in taste.

I love the art style! the tiny palette and the crt effect are great, and the little glitchy things in the walls are a nice touch

SCANLINE by pdotjpg 2021-10-19T18:00:40Z

@pdotjpg I did not sync up the doors (although after I died I realized that was probably the right thing to do!)

nice! I like the different mechanics you added

Ark by ProdigalSon 2021-10-17T01:49:14Z

fun! A neat, different take on cosmic express. I like the interesting consequences of the exact mechanics of how the different paths are allowed to cross (i.e. not at corners)

Level 12 was probably my favorite; I spent a while trying to figure out a complicated sequence of "A picks up X and Y, then drops Y and picks up Z" before stepping back and figuring it out :D

I feel like my level 13 solution was unintended? not sure; here it is if you're interested: https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/375116771545579520/899108365983162389/unknown.png

I wish there were more speed options for running my solutions. Also, I wish the volume settings didnt reset every level (although that might be because I have cookies disabled...? not sure)

The polish on this was really great! I thought having the UI+instructions+settings+game all simultaneously visible at all times was a neat, different thing, and I like it.

Drilbert II Diggeredoo by wheybags 2021-10-15T21:18:43Z

some neat puzzles towards the end! The first few levels to teach me how the mechanics of movement worked were nicely done. The 1x win v. 2x win is a cool design decision to let people know they're on the bonus/hard levels; I like it a lot (I remember you did it in drilbert 1 as well)

I'm reminded of https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/48/keke-in-the-caves-of-peril from last LD; did you play it? Similar and yet very different because in this game you can move upwards freely

Floor Falls by Toomblercazz 2021-10-15T20:29:28Z

really excellent puzzle! and excellent polish on the graphics/animations/sfx etc; this is super snazzy for puzzlescript. I would play more levels!

Akameis by BJakubowski 2021-10-06T22:34:23Z

neat game! the hammer was quite useful for skipping turns and letting arrows move out of my way. was there another use for it? I couldn't figure one out.

I found the controls quite awkward; I wish pressing an arrow would instantly do your current action in the given direction. (and maybe you set your "current action" by holding down C for bow/B for build/etc before pressing an arrow key (and don't hold anything to walk)) I guess this means you can't do any action on the tile below you... but is that ever useful?

I don't think I used any weapons until the final level; I had more fun stealthing/dodging around the arrows and enemies

I liked the puzzley feel of the levels; since there's no RNG I was able do the exact same sequence of moves and then try to fix whatever it was that killed me on the previous attempt. The move timer was a tiny bit annoying, but mostly it wasn't relevant for me. (hmm, now I'm suddenly wondering: was this inspired by NecroDancer at all? the "move timer" in that game is it's best feature!)

anyway, fun game, thanks! the ending made me laugh

Lab Panic! by GibsS 2021-10-17T14:22:03Z

whoaaa I did The Thing in level 6 and felt like I'd discovered a whole new side to the game early. (I think it _was_ early; that level is beatable the normal way) that was really cool! very nice how the animations subtly suggest that this is possible.

I made it through all of the game but didn't beat the last level and ran out of skips. fun puzzles! I would have liked them to be a bit "tighter"; I couldn't really tell what the levels were trying to teach / if I had done the intended solution or found cheese, most of the time. But I suppose that might be more of a difference in style. Overall I enjoyed the levels! and the game looks and plays really really nice; I particularly like the slightly-staggered explosion of smoke.

Unstable Isotopes by Marcos Donnantuoni 2021-10-18T01:37:54Z

fun! I find it kind of funny how in vanilla sokoban 2x2 boxes are generally bad... but here they straight-up kill you haha

The mechanic seems like it has some good potential, and its conceptually obvious/simple in some sense, which is very nice. I think my favorite was level 3; it took a surprising number of steps!

Breakoban by OgelGames 2021-10-18T03:25:54Z

really solid! the puzzle design is great; I liked that one level (4?) that silently teaches you about how some floors crack twice. My favorite level was probably 9; really nice use of interactions to make a puzzle that seems impossible I would have liked some sort of level select. you should definitely check out puzzlescript (as someone commented earlier), it's really great for making sokobans like this!

VelociCorp Warehouses by pancelor 2021-10-05T04:22:18Z

Flat Earth Balancer by KreGames 2021-10-17T12:58:24Z

I bet adding some more challenge somehow would be a good thing -- it's pretty easy to spam-click and win even if the results are wildly unstable. Maybe the game could wait a few seconds after 10 houses are placed to make sure things remain balanced? The graphics+music+sfx+physics are nice and pleasant, and I like how the little houses fall over independently from the world :)

Wiggle Bird by SamDemaine 2021-10-06T22:10:20Z

this game has a great vibe! the animations and sounds were nice and comfy.

I spent, idk, 20~50% of my total time in this game just waiting for the restart animation to finish, and often I would accidentally press a button (while sitting around waiting) which would start the bird before I could see, causing it to hit a wall and sending me back to watch the restart animation again.

I'm not sure if I got the controls; I don't understand why I would ever want to use both buttons in a level (I only used one button)

the levels were a really nice length -- long enough to be challenging, but not long enough that I quit in frustration. thanks for the game!

Don Muchacho: Vigilante by javi7 2021-10-18T20:22:22Z

(really great game! small, silly; the gameplay is interesting enough but not hard enough to get in the way of the true star of the show: the audio)

Cave In by Rafael Garcez 2021-10-18T01:06:16Z

fun game! I agree with OllieOA; this could be a fun little replacement for, e.g. rock-paper-scissors. The winning strategy seems quite simple (but somehow the cpu was a lot better than I was...?) and I'd like to see more complication somehow, but it's just fun to watch everything fall down
