As many people pointed out the flaws with control scheme, unfortunately, I cannot change it for fairness sake until the voting period is over. Luckily, if things go well on my side, I'm planning a **deluxe edition** with some stuff I hadn't been able to do within the 3 days of the jam - with a few extra areas, some powerups and _a revamp of the control scheme_
@willoxs same key for jumping and drilling doesn't really work: you'd have to release the jumping key to perform the drilling move, which would make it harder to use precisely at a specific altitude - and I did try this. The current button layout is the default PICO-8 one, which is what's also used in many emulators _and_ modern platforming games that don't use the mouse, as it approximates a NES gamepad, albeit with d-pad and buttons swapped to use the arrow keys as a d-pad surrogate. For a vast majority of platformer players, _this_ is the preferred layout in place of WASD+space
Can't access the game, put it on mediafire or something
Frankly? Not a fan of the sluggish movement speed and mashing attack. But the music is a bop.
Top 100 material right here
Love the visuals and authentic SMS chiptune!
Bro tip: You actually can hold to move! It triggers after a short while, like when you're entering text. It's an internal feature of PICO-8
Also, wow spoilers 💀
Couldn't find a reason to press any button other than 7. Maybe put a collectible at the end of each platform?
So, a reverse getting over it? I love it
> Any plans of expanding it further down the line?
Somewhat unlikely but definitely possible in the future. As a straight-to-Newgrounds title perhaps? I'm already working on following up [our previous](https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/57/spider-cave-offensive) [two entries](https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/48/miner-vitalya) as a [fantasy console sandbox game](https://cardboardbox.tech/stargazer/) so look forward to that first!
Simple but effective. Could do with some audio and VFX
@verttixpertti sorry you feel that way! We've made sure the enemies and objective work completely differently, but I guess you can't make a maze chase game and not have it be associated with Pacman. Just for reference, may I ask how far did you make it in the game?
@tetracold I'm preparing a post-jam version with some tweaks for Newgrounds, including restricting some enemy spawns to post-loop only. (achievements and a leaderboard, too!)
For now, I have a few hints:
- Snake enemies dislike doing U-turns and are generally stuck to their moving direction. If they go right, you go left. They also never target you specifically, just a square somewhere near you, so they can even miss you point blank. - You can bait the spike enemies into attacking and missing you. - Level 3 features a lot of snake enemies. The left-right rule I mentined before works wonders here, simlply check where they are going and go the other way. - On level 4 you're going to encounter a pair of enemies that like to box you in. In general, you can visually split the level into 3 parts (left wing, center, right wing) and don't be in the part as they are.
@tetracold you know what they say, rate 5!
@drainkid it's an honor! Thank you!
It's a game alright
Daaaarn those visuals
Itch project gone!
Felt confusing at first, but there's definitely a game here.
Pro tip: try not to upload debug builds, all the debugging things consume performance too
