Never thought that in my wildest dreams, a homebrew game for the Sega Master System would surface as an LD entry. Great job.

Amazing! A master system game, in C!!! And there's even music and SFX! I find this waaaaaaaaaaaaay more enjoyable and creditable than all this Unity nonsense :-)
Kudos, team!
(I played on Mednafen, I got no obvious issues (except maybe some graphical glitches when the character gets hit?)).
@moonlightbomber Thanks! There is always every year a few homebrew entries in LD. Finding them is always a treasure hunt.
@ace17 Glad you enjoyed our Master System nonsense! There are bunch of graphical and other glitches in the game. Mednafen is most likely doing its job just fine. Our game is just held together with hope and duct tape.
This style of painting is so interesting and very fun! I also invite you to experience my game
What the actual hell omg! its a sega master system game!!:O That's amazing! I really like the fact there's flowers when goodzilla steps on grass, aww it's really cute! Encountered a few funny glitches along the way because i think pressed the wrong keys lol, overall Its amazing :D
Oooh this is fantastic! I'm always super impressed by stuff like this, making games for older consoles is so cool but it also seems like total witchcraft to me - especially when the game is actually good!
Playing this reminded me of somebody who made a game for two retro consoles at the Assembly Game Jam last year - then the credits pop up and it turns out to be the same guy
Very cool. I like it. Very nice game Some building hitboxes apparently don't work, they don't transform Well done
Love the visuals and authentic SMS chiptune!
Loved how consistent everything was, just a super cute little game. There were some buildings that looked out of place (directly next to water tiles without transition) and some hitboxes felt a bit wonky but overall great result!
Oh this is awesome. I can confirm it ran well on my mega drive using an sd card so that's fun! The game itself was incredibly pretty, especially considering colour limitations. Likewise with the audio, it sounds great. Gameplay could have been more complex, but I have to say I did play it for a good while so I can't complain much.
So cute tiny game!
Played through it on Fusion and worked like a charm minus some major slowdown when things get crazy towards the end.
Love the extra effort of making a game for an unconventional platform. Audio and visuals both feel proper for the time period too.
Glad Goodzilla could bring some good to the world. Really great entry, team!
Nice fitting music, fast gameplay and i love the Master System because of the more limited palette. The game is hard 😅
Thanks for all the kind comments! <3
We uploaded a minor patch to the Itch page that implements some art assets that were created during the jam, but we didn't have time to put in or were glitched.
@axlplosion If you want to learn how to make games for ancient hardware, I run retro game jam here in Finland every year. You are welcome to join! Most people in the jam are working first time with old consoles.
@jajo Nice to hear it running well on your Mega Drive! I used Mega EverDrive Pro during development. Direct usb connection from PC to EverDrive makes testing fast.
And for fun: Here is video memory dump of the game. All the tiles living in harmony in their little tiny home. (not much space left)

Man, this is the second game I've played this LD built for a genuine SEGA system. Crazy.
Nature's had enough of our industrial nonsense and wants to take her planet back. She sends forth her strongest warrior to menace humanity back into shape and show us whose in charge. Goodzilla's action has you obliterating a city and replacing it with all natural, idealistic objects of a pleasant day outside, which is very cute.
Less cute are these canons, they hurt and (at least in my emulator with V1.0) tank my framerate. Hardly a dent in the otherwise really complete and polished feeling game, I had a good time destroying the factories and liberating the planet.
WOW omg, thats an impressive solid entry. And to be done IN C is a crazy achievement! god, is really super bold to submit an authentic master system game in a gamejam, and as a lover for retro games myself this I deeply value this artistic drive :) I really loved the art and the sound design overall. And you got me so surprised with this game that I have nothing to complain. A super cozy and cute authentic lil thing, I'm full of joy for having played it. Great game! Keep up the good work! :)
I didn't have the time to set up emulation for this, but I just wanted to say this is super cool! Super interesting to see a console title come out of the jam! Hope to give this a try at some point! :smiley_cat:
Insane that you guys made a game for the Sega Master, I didn't setup the emulator to play it, but I'd love to give you guys a rating if you upload a video so people can see it!
Awww this is absolutely adorable!! I love the goodzilla so much! Really cool to see the mastersystem getting some love, I've seen other games for older systems in previous LD, particularly the NES, but never the sms! I love how games look on it, they're so colorful. Anyway the game is fun too, very satisfying, and I'm glad you can't die because some of these sections with the cannons are really tough lol, good job!

Oh wow, I was not expecting to ever download an emulator for a game jam. this is super well polished, kudos to the entire team! this feels like it must have been twice the effort, just testing things and dealing with the master system's limitations. I love the little dance you can do, too.
@fupi Thats adorable! Thank you!
Loved playing this. Almost makes me want to try making a game for a retro system. The sprites are gorgeous. I used mednafen to play it.
@braeden I recorded some gameplay running on real hardware! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gKbkarjxe3U
I generally think everyone should play the games they rate. No offense taken, if you just watch the video to satisfy your curiosity.
Yeah! Had to do it when I saw it was a Master System game. Here it is working on an Anbernic RG40XXV :D Nice entry! (you can't die, right?)

@samuli Haha amazing!! thanks for posting the video! I love the music and the sound effects! I'm amazed that you guys were able to make this in 72hrs Great job
@notnasiul Glad to see with all the colors really popping on the handheld!
And yes, you are correct, you cannot die. We wanted to make a game that is all about fun and causing havoc. We don't luckily have to balance out Ludum Dare entries against game rental market and increase difficulty for no reason, like many 8-bit games originally did.
