really cool game, everything is great, graphics, music, gameplay - cool

mdotedot 2021-04-26 18:34

nice entry. The only thing that bothered me was that I didn't got the immediate reaction what kind of objects are bad and which I could navigate past. I really loved the different places you could visit. So I didn't felt all alone down there.

caue-henrique 2021-04-26 18:35

Great game! Love the art style, really enjoyed the gameplay and the sound design is beautifully done! 9/10

robowarrior1982 2021-04-26 18:36

I love PICO8 games and this kind of graphics ! The world you have create is funny with a lot of reference, it's a very good game !

poorwill 2021-04-26 18:37

Oh my what a nice idea and great excecution. Just a great all around entry.

One small thing I felt was that it was sometimes hard to determine the exact spot where you are supposed to be to drop them off.

samguy 2021-04-26 18:39

Couldn't really figure it out, but it seems cool. A bit more instruction would be helpful. Nice art, movement feels a little bit clunky but it makes sense for a submarine

hilkojj 2021-04-26 18:42

I genuinely really enjoyed playing this! Exploring the underwater level with all the destinations, happy customers, great job!

I earned $600 :D

I had one customer that was already exactly at his destination, lol

barelyevengames 2021-04-26 18:44

I'll start off by saying it is really impressive that you were able to get all of this done on a PICO 8 within the 48 hour time frame. Of all the pico games I've played, I think this is the largest in scale that I've ever played! Love the dialogue system and all of the cute references to Spongebob, action movies, moby dick, etc. The one thing that was a little tough for me was figuring out where the heck I was supposed to go. The very first guy had me take him to the vents, and I had absolutely no idea where that was or even if I was supposed to take him there. I wandered around aimlessly for awhile, then ultimately found the vents about 10 seconds before time was up. I think an arrow pointing to where you need to go is essential for a taxi game because a player has no idea where these things are. Overall though, I think this was fantastic

clamshell64 2021-04-26 18:52

After I figured out how things worked,I had a lot of fun with this game! the art and music are fantastic, as is the map. I think it's really impressive that you did this in PICO-8 in 48 hours, too.

airwaffle 2021-04-26 19:06

Stupid divers being so close to the wall that I crash into it when trying to pick them up. And that onediver that wanted to go to Moby Dick even though he was RIGHT NEXT to it. Lazy. It's a hard time being a sub uber driver. I tell you that.

Great game man. Very cute and I can see a lot fun ways to expand on it, better sense of direction (minimap?) and more interaction points would be super fun. Also, I think I would maybe prefered it without the timer and less stressful sounds. But that might just be me. Still great work and very impressive having done all that during a game jam!

paroxysmal 2021-04-26 23:55

Great game...I'm a terrible sub driver...but would play again.

extar 2021-04-27 10:02

I'm blown away by all the positive comments, it's super appreciated! :)

@BarelyEvenGames There's a sonar ping effect which is supposed to work like the arrow showing you where to go, I think I need to change the colour of it though, people are finding it pretty hard to see against the blue background so it's probably not clear what it's for at the moment. @hilkojj Yeah the way the divers are placed is quick and dirty so you can often get them basically right next to their destination. That's definitely something I'm tweaking for the post-jam version. @caue-henrique Until I added the concrete blocks in there was only the rocks that could damage your sub. Definitely something I'll think about for the post-jam version. @poorwill Good point, I'm annoyed I missed that, I'll definitely add a target/crosshair for the post-jam version. Sometimes if you're going too fast, the passengers won't leave the sub too. @airwaffle Glad you enjoyed it! I'm definitely going to brush this up for a post-jam version, the display at the top is meant to be a phone app, so that'd be a cool way to incorporate a mini-map. :) @samguy Yeah it can be a bit confusing what you need to do sometimes, the plan is/was to add messages from the phone/app to tell you what to do next, definitely something I'll put in the post-jam version. :)

niall-chandler 2021-04-27 14:58

Excellent game! I'd dare say that it's even better than my Ludum Dare 48 game. Also, I have to say, when the theme of Ludum Dare 48 has announced as 'Deeper and deeper', sub-aquatic taxi driver was not something I could have ever come up with, so I admire the creativity of the concept. oh, and I liked the Spongebob reference with the underwater pineapple :)

cary-stanley 2021-04-27 17:06

Great Game!

I also did a submarine theme for my game and I really like the "sonar" effect to indicate the direction, I wish I had thought of something like that.

I love all the little locations you created, such a fun idea!!

I didn't not realize the game ends in 5mins the first time I played, one feedback would have been to have the timer count down instead of up

extar 2021-04-27 20:09

@niall-chandler Thanks! The submarine idea my wife's suggestion and the taxi thing evolved out of starting by rescuing divers and bringing them back to the surface but the map needed landmarks and then it would be more fun and varied if you had to visit the different parts of the map. So yeah, underwater taxis.

@cary-stanley Glad you appreciated the sonar! The game timer was the very last thing I added twenty minutes before the deadline so it was really thrown together, you're right, it should definitely count down. I needed a simple way to give the game an ending and also keep the playtime nice and short to make it more jam-friendly. I'm probably going to add a Crazy-Taxi-style time extension thing when you drop off a passenger for the post-jam version.

sestren 2021-04-28 03:44

At first, I didn't notice the sonar effect and thought you had to learn and memorize each location. Once I learned to use the sonar, the game was a lot more fun. The music is great, and the animating bubbles are a nice touch.

I'm not sure if this was a bug or not, but I did find it seemingly impossible to drop someone off at the Evil Base. I ended up damaging my hull beyond repair trying to get close enough. Altogether, this was a great entry! Thank you for making it!

dotsquare 2021-04-28 20:04

I loved this game! It's like Crazy Taxy meats Subnautica x) No seriously it was very cool. Always love Pico8 games, and I liked your previous games too I'm a huge fan of spongebob too so I liked the easter eggs Congrats!

extar 2021-04-28 20:10

@dotsquare Awesome, glad you're enjoying my stuff! :) I only really know about Crazy Taxi through osmosis, but I used to love playing the taxi mini-game on old GTA games, which I assume were just ripping the game off. I quickly ran out of films I could reference with the locations, so had to resort to the old chestnut, Spongebob Squarepants :D

dotsquare 2021-04-28 20:17

@extar you should try it someday, from my childhood memories it was a great great game (but it might be because I was a kid haha) again, congrats for your entry!

extar 2021-04-28 22:05

@sestren Yeah I think I need to make the sonar a bit easier to see. Glad you appreciated the bubbles, I was basically goofing off when I was making those when I should have been working on something more important but less fun :) There's indeed a bug with the evil base. I'm hopefully going to sort that tomorrow with a little bug fix (as far as I can tell, minor fixes like that are within the rules) Also, high five for naming yourself after the end boss of Panzer Dragoon Saga. :D

schuster 2021-04-30 00:00

Great game! Love the graphics. I didn't notice the sonar pings for a moment though.

wouter52 2021-04-30 16:28

Such a fun game! It brought a smile to my face playing it. Simple to learn, hard to master. Just how I like it. The graphics I find impressive, knowing the limitations on PICO-8. I looked into it just before starting the jam and decided to leave it for another time :)

The music is catchy and the sound effects are bubbly and fun to listen to :)

Well done!

justcamh 2021-05-01 17:20

Hey matey, thanks for submitting your game to stream! I enjoyed playing it, here's the vod, I hope the feedback helps!

extar 2021-05-02 11:30

@justcamh thanks so much. Your LD streams are always really fun to watch. Thanks for the feedback on the game, gave me some ideas for the post-jam version. :)

verygenuinecraze 2021-05-02 21:26

Very nice entry! The only thing I could add to this game is more various missions (but in 48 hours it seems harsh).

Good job

extar 2021-05-03 01:09

@verygenuinecraze yeah there is a much that I want to add for the post-jam version, I was trying to keep things as tight and focused as possible for the 48 hour compo :)

shakedimus 2021-05-03 08:34

It's a well polished nice game at a floaty pace. I think the graphics , the music how the collisions and the sonar worked, fit together very nicely to give it a nice underwater vibe. I do think the mood gave it a more leasurly pace and I wasn't really racing against the time. That's not necessarily bad but maybe , do as much as possible in 5 minutes is not the best mode for this game. The locations were quite funny and entertaining. One thing which was unclear in the beginning is that I could pick up divers ecause I wa going to fast, mmaybe a sonar in their direction would be nice. I think overall it is a nice polished game, which fit the theme well. I enjoyed playing it but it was a bit slow paced so could become either calming or boring after a while, not yet sure :P Good job!

johnsensei 2021-05-04 13:35

Great job submitting a Pico-8 game to the Compo. Some of my friends use Pico-8 and it's a great tool if you can use it well, which you did. This has been one of my favorites so far. I made $496 on my first play through. Probably not all that great, but I had fun.

extar 2021-05-05 08:45

@johnsensei thanks! Pico-8 works really well for game jams like this, it lets you get things together really quickly, and the games always have that 'look'. :)

mololo 2021-05-06 04:45

Very interesting idea, I like the graphics and the music. the gameplay was a lot of fun, but it was a bit hard to understand at first, who do I need to pick up, maybe it's just me .

Overall great game, good job.

pancelor 2021-05-06 21:49

great game! my first run was rough (one delivery) but once I got a feel for the map I had a lot of fun; made $640 on my second run! I love the bubbles that come out behind the sub, and the schools of fish, and all the other little details like this that really made the game feel alive. I wish the HUD message box wasn't so large, or that it went away sooner. Really great adaptation of crazy taxi to pico-8!

potatolain 2021-05-07 22:29

Great entry! As others have said, the graphics are fantastic. I really like the retro feel, and using the pico8 certainly helps with that. It took me a good minute to figure out what the divers looked like, so I was driving around aimlessly until I figured that out. Once I did though I had a lot of fun with it! I managed to raise $1000! :D The music also fit really well, which is always hard to do in the constraints of the compo.

The biggest constructive feedback I could give you've already gotten a few times - the sonar is a bit hard to see. (but a great idea otherwise!) Showing what the diver and sonar look like on an intro screen might have helped a lot too. Lastly, I'm not sure if this was expected, but a lot of the time my sub seemed to face a different direction than I was travelling.

All of this feedback aside this was a very fun and pretty game. Nicely done!

extar 2021-05-08 00:59

@cppchriscpp Thanks for the quality feedback. Yes, these are all things I'm adding into the post-jam version. It's currently a bit of a rough start if you don't get any divers in the starting area.

euler-moises 2021-05-14 15:21

I really liked everything! Of the idea, of the music, of the art, of the execution ... My children and I always played with the idea of "sUBERmarine", but we always thought of a car that went into the water. I never imagined this idea in im game. Is it thought transmission? :D I really liked it! An idea that would be very interesting to take forward. Congratulations on doing something so solid in just 2 days. And alone!

extar 2021-05-14 23:56

@euler-moises wow, glad you enjoyed it! Maybe you did somehow transfer thoughts across the waves to me. In truth, the main idea for the game came from my wife. I was initially thinking of some dumb Egyptian tomb idea, I'm glad I went with submarine taxi game, much easier to develop :D
