Okay, this was a blast. The visual and audio design work blew me away. This is really stellar. Controls feel so solid, and I love the general atmosphere. If I had any complaint at all - I wish it were longer! This is nuts given the time you all made it in!

(please just tell me if you want me to remove this image... but it really was my favorite bit)
Well, I dont have a nes emulator, but the game looks interesting
Very true to the NES while still being innovative in its own right. Bonus authenticity points for having it actually run on an NES emulator. Good pacing, intuitive design, all around a great experience!
For the love of frogs !
Now that... Was cool.
Mad respects for going that long and twisted road of making a goddamn NES rom. All about this game brings joy to my jaded heart. Art, music, the fact, that all of that fits into 385KB! Damn, my game is just text and screens, and it exceed 20MB!
And, the game was fun. Good job!
Wow! Awesome game :D Really like the music and art! One of the best entries so far :v: I used nestopia, not sure if that was the cause of some issues with controls. Might be a good idea to suggest a NES emulator in the description.
What a cute game! How you managed to make a whole NES game in the game jam time is beyond me. I played this on an online emulator. Some of the early levels I thought were too easy, but otherwise I thought it was a good level of difficulty. Very charming sound and music. Great job!
Very good game ! Reminds me of the good old times
If you hold down + B, you can moon jump to infinity. 10/10
Cute little game! Thanks for making it
Pretty neat! Felt nostalgic after playing! Where does time go! Thanks!
This is so cool! I've never seen a NES game in a Ludum Dare before. The frog is adorable, and the music is great, love that end theme
Yess, more reto console games in Ludum Dare! From some very familiar names, no less.
I loved this! The controls felt extremely solid, and I really liked the bubble bobble-esque mechanic. I was surprised I could move the bubble, but it's not hard to get the hang of, and it works. The graphics and sound were also pretty fantastic. I liked the minimalist take on the graphics, only using 2 palettes for tiles and one for sprites. Overall this is definitely among my favorite entries so far.
Of course I've gotta give some constructive feedback too, so I have to mention a few bugs/issues. First, collision with spikes anywhere other than the ground doesn't seem to exist, at least in the few places I missed. It's not a huge problem, but might've made the game a bit easy. It's also possible to clip through the ground with the bubble when holding up - combining these two I got myself stuck in a soft lock here:
cQ29LII.png
Luckily I was using mesen, so I just rewound to before that point and was able to continue.
That aside I can't overstate how much fun this was. Thanks for a great entry!
Oh! A fellow NES submission!!!
Fun game! The graphics look nice (especially the frog) and the music is especially good (@kulor never fails to deliver!). I do wish there was more graphical variety though.
Follows the theme pretty decently, too
Gameplay is fun too, especially the concept. However, I feel like it's let down by the bugs, such as the spikes not on the floor not hurting you, which makes the game a bit too easy, or having the bubble sometimes fire outside of the frog's mouth when firing them off the starting position. Also, is it normal that the ending crashes eventually? (Playing on FCEUX) I would've loved to let the sax song go for longer... Also, a little more content would've been nice.
Still, there's a really good game here that I enjoyed thoroughly despite my criticisms, and I really hope this gets developed further :)
wow, this game's really good, I love the mechanics
OOOOOO nelly! Best one yet, so smooth, visually pleasing and generally fun. I have nothing more to say.
I dont have a nes emulator, but I love what im seeing in the gifs
I'm impressed you've made a NES GAME. Awesome! Loved the game and its atmosphere.
nice game, really good art
If this was a PC entry, I'd say it's pretty good... add on the fact that this is made for the NES and I'm seriously impressed! I didn't run into most of the bugs others mentioned, and had a blast with it. Great job all!
I didnt think ill go as far on this jam as downloading an emulator?? I needed this game. It`s awesome you were able to code it!
Love the vibe ! the gameplay is cool !same for the art, you did pretty good job
The sprites of the main character are so cuuuuuuute. I loved it!
Absolutely wild that you all made a great NES game in 72 hours! The music was great - I missed it on my first playthrough and had to restart to hear it, had my emulator muted. Once I got the hang of the controls it was a ton of fun! I hope you develop it into a longer game. Keep the clipping bug, seems like it might be useful for speedruns :eyes:
The art fits perfectly with the action. The difficulty curve and level design was perfect. The mechanics were interesting to learn and I had a great time playing. I saw the sax frog and just wanted more levels! Some of the bubble controls felt a bit hard to understand even near the end, but it was still fun to mess with. Please make more levels! Thank you for the game.
A NES game!! splendid job, I suddently felt old jumping on my bubbles like in Bubble & Bobble "few" years ago... GREAT work, music is awesome btw.
Holy crap, that is amazing, kudos to you for creating a game on an embedded platform, and one so old, and one without official development tools to boot. I salute thee.
It was fun to play, I did take a bit too long to figure out you can also control the position of the bubble, but it was nice afterwards. Though the game crashed at the end :(
Great work!
It was a fun little platformer. I like the main bubble mechanic and would love to see it fleshed out more. Great work!
Bro this might be a LD48 winner! The game itself is amazing, but the fact that it could be played only using emulators is annoying. Still amazing game!
Ok now. Making a NES cartridge, that's what I call flexing hard :lifter: The vibes are insane, great work. Collisions are a bit buggy but nothing I can't live with. Kudos. Oh, and, obviously, ribbit.
So far this is the best game I've played in the jam. The pixel art, music and gameplay are all brilliant. Quality stuff. My only complaint is that sometimes you can clip through walls by using the bubble.
Bruh. How did you even make this in the given time frame? This one might win the jam, or at least score very, very highly.
Dope that this is an NES Game. Could yall imagine something with this kind of design being release in 87 with more levels!? It would have been a classic and spawned endless sequels! lol
I didn't get much "deeper and deeper" vibes. I suppose we were landing on elevators, descending into the dungeon, but it probably should have animated to complete the theme.
BUT the art, music, and design; ALL good! Just wish it was longer!
The game froze during the ending cutscene while we were playing the Sax. Not a big deal, game was done (i think), just thought yall may want to know.
:fire: Good job! :fire:
It took me a bit to get the big drop area but when I did I fully understood the mechanics I was dealing with. I wish there was a collectable to achieve or feel some extra reward. Love the puzzle platformer and highly innovative gameplay. and NES! what! very cool.
Probably my favorite game of the jam so far.
This just blew my mind. The music, the art, the very solid controls, the really well thought out level design, the fact that this runs as an actual NES cartridge... the work that went into this is amazing.
I had one glitch where the bubble somehow spawned across a wall and on the other side of the room but that fixed itself with repositioning myself so it wasn't anything gamebreaking.
Really well done, thank you for making this!
I really liked the art and mechanics of this game. Well done!
I would buy a cart of this. Well done! The art was on par, the music freakin' rocked! Well done! I did not expect to be downloading an NES emulator for a game! I'm so glad I did.
This game is really beautiful and has a great mood! I downloaded the NES emulator just for it, still wasn't able to complete it though. Special congrats to the artist cause the art is really stunning!
Fantastic concept, well executed! Had a blast working out the mechanic. Levels were well designed, and it felt like a finished refined game. Well done!
This was really fun! The spikes on the ceiling didn't seem to really do anything though unfortunately.
This is great, a very solid game all around. Did you guys use Nes Maker (or something like that) or did you did everything by hand? Pretty cool regardless of the means.
Great job.
Played this on the big screen in my living room with my retropi and an actual controller, and it is amazing! One of the most instant-fun games in my NES collection! Especially impressive considering this was made for LD. It could do with some additional gameplay elements, maybe a bit of a storyline, but it's lovely the way it is :)
@cassio-eduardo good question. We used my custom VRC6 game engine and all game logic is written in 6502 assembler.
This was really great.
The sprites are of high quality and the color-scheme is very pleasant to look at. The music is also well put together.
---
I can imagine someone will find the peculiar bubble-mechanic a little janky, but as a NES-afficiando I didn't have a problem with it myself.
A few lines of text and some close-up picture providing backstory (in the classic fashion) would've been a neat addition.
---
But yeah, always happy to see some quality NES homebrew-stuff put out.
Keep on ribbitin' ! :saxophone: :frog:
Congratulations it is extremely difficult to make a game of nes, obviously in a short time there would be a series of bugs, in my opinion the idea has to stand out the tool used, because even though it is difficult to produce a game in these conditions, the focus on the idea did not pass me by to be the priority but the personal challenge of producing a game on time, this is still a part of the process, but it cannot be counted as a whole, I know that this game will soon come out after polishing a beautiful diamond and I would like to be following this evolution, thank you very much for allowing me to play your game, a big hug to everyone, and I look forward to your evaluations regarding my game.
Deadass love this game. If I had a flashcart I'd play it on original hardware, but I'm going to try it on my FPGA console and see how it runs. Really solid, really great little game. Shame about the crash at the ending, but dang, great effort, you all.
IMHO I'd recommend mesen or higan for linux over FCEUX, FCEUX is pretty outdated and inaccurate and doesn't really do your sound and graphics justice.
It runs on an actual nes/nes emulator. It runs on an *actual* nes emulator! So cool! The game is short and sweet and not too difficult. If you love Bubble Bobble and are familiar with how that game plays, then you'll love this! The sprite work is exquisite as well! 10/10 would play again!
A very NES frog! The retro atmosphere and the retro entry (need an emulator) is the gem here in the present night. The game design built in pixel art levels and bubble interaction is the pathway of that great experience. 3 days! "Deeper and deeper" theme in 3 days by the static elevators was a pragmatic choice, however I think in 2 weeks it could turn more "deeper and deeper" in fact. The music confused me (and it is OK), and the multiple channels are in great use here - in contrast the progression of the music leads me to a racing game (will be perfect with velocity of a futuristic plot) due to that I missed the frog dungeon crawler game in the end. Also you guys need to explore more the sax mood in the end to improve humor and plot in a next alpha or beta version. Following you. Good luck!
I uploaded our gameplay of your game on youtube, you can find it here: https://www.youtube.be/watch?v=1F0Ywiy2Mt8&t=16416s
Thanks for being part of the stream, it was amazing!
This game is not only really impressive for the technology it used, but also fun to play it and the quality of your graphics. I'm not sure I would have figure out that I could move the bubble by myself if you didn't tell me though. Maybe adding a visual clue for the player could be a good idea, I'm not sure.
I really enjoyed it, thanks!
I wish there were more mechanics and levels in the game, it felt pretty short. But it is a great game!
Really cute game! I love how expressive the little frog character is. I also appreciate how you actually made an NES rom; that's super cool. The music is also top notch. I will say that the gameplay is on the simple side, with just the one bubble mechanic and rooms full of spikes. It might have been cool to see how the bubble mechanic interacted with different types of obstacles. But, overall, a very solid package. Nice work!
i would love to play this game @2bitcrook but i dont have a NES :/ will you create a post jam version for pc?
SO CUTEEE!! OMG!!! CUTEE!! HAHAHaa, pretty fun and solid entry, gj!
The game was super cute and fun!! It was easy to pick up (even for someone who's not good at games in general). Thank you!
@kaminos Could you not get a NES emulator to work? There are links to ones at the top, I assure you they are easy to set up! We're hoping to work more on Frog post jam for sure, unsure if it will just load on PC alone but hopefully!
So much good stuff here! The art, color palette and music worked together so well it felt like a classic already! The levels were simple and straightforward and did well to show off the main mechanics.
There were a couple buggy interactions (I think just with the bubble), but the character himself was really responsive to controls. OMG the animations though!!!! You packed so much expression into the lil guy with just a handful of frames on a character with only a handful of pixels with only a handful of colors haha
You already mentioned to me about post jam plans and other mechanics you have planned so I'll just drop a couple of my mechanic ideas: -Some kind of object that passively creates bubbles in later levels so you could have more bubbles in a scene xD The bubbles would move in the general direction that the object was pointing but would float upwards too. If the player (or maybe even a different) object is on the bubble, it starts to move downwards -bubble could block projectiles (but pops) so one level could be creating a bunch of bubbles in front of you as you move toward an enemy. Another level could be navigating upwards and using your bubble as a shield as you pass by!
(Was going to attach some images, but they took up a lot of space. Will get them to you later!)
Just. Wow! - this is amazing, and to be done in a jam as well. Controls are great, though the bubble control could be made a bit more visible (I also should read better too :p)
yey! i finally have managed to play it and i'm so happy that i did! guys you've done an awesome job. On the one hand you've made a cool game and on the other you've created a time machine. I felt like i went back in my childhood for a while. Priceless. I haven't encountered any bugs. The ctrls feel solid, controlling the bubble and using it to pass the spikes is a great idea. The graphics are very cool.. congrats 2bitcrook :) My only complaint is that there aren't more lvls to play.. i would love to play more.. maybe post jam? Fantastic job guys you should be proud of yourselves <3

Kanguru here! This is a wonderful puzzle platformer, short and sweet. The bubble mechanic is really cool and allows for so much great level design. It's clear that a tone of polish went into every part of this game. 10/10 game, 11/10 marketing from 2bitcrook.
Nice retro game with cute mini-challanges! Bubble mechanic worked well, I think it has a lot of potential as part of a higher-scale game. Transitions between levels were waaayyy too long, same as the death animation. I would have preferred it to be a long continuous play rather than separate levels, even if each challenge has its own screen. Duke Dashington and VVVVVV are good examples of how to nail this.
Finished the game on the [stream](https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1007202934?t=01h37m56s). It is great! First of all, I liked the idea to make a NES-game with all the restrictions it make. The mechanics is nice and interesting (thanks for the bug on the final level - I would never beat it without it :D), frog is the cutest little thing I saw and the music fits really well. Had fun playing it!
I love that you made a game for NES that you can actually run on an emulator, amazing! The level design was awesome and the progression was just right.
I encountered some minor issues (not sure if it was an emulator problem or an actual bug): - Sometimes the bubbles were spawn a lot further in the direction i was looking, and sometimes inside tiles - I could move during the respawn
The music and art were really really good and fitting to the mood, overall it was a fantastic experience that really hit the nostalgia feels, great job everyone!
what a fun little game!! LOVE the music, and I'm always impressed with people programming for old consoles. I hear NES dev is baaasically just programming in assembly, which sounds pretty rough. If you'd had more time I would have loved to see some more levels/mechanics/enemies/something, idk. great graphics! and the fade-ins/fade-outs work great; not sure how hard that is on your console but I know for me (on pico-8) it can be a bit tricky. thanks for the game! :saxophone: :frog:

The little codeman in my soul was taken back Bubble Bobble days, loved it!
[Thanks for submitting this to our stream!](https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1006873415?t=04h09m45s)
I just straight-up loved this, full-stop. The art, the sounds, the unique gameplay, this is all one super impressive package. The only thing holding this entry back from being a full-fledged "I would pay money for this" game is more levels, which is hardly a criticism considering this was made in a weekend. Super super impressive stuff here!
This was so awesome! I wasn't sure about needing to download an emulator, but it was completely worth it, and so awesome that it runs on the NES! I really enjoyed the bubble mechanic and it was just challenging enough. Good job!
Fantastic, innovative, tons of fun to play. The mechanics are awesome. I especially liked the ending song. Thanks for letting us play it!
Sax frog was worth playing the game for. Awesome job! I loved it and talking with one dev it sounds like you all made it run on actual nes hardware, super impressive. very fun!
Cute nostalgic game with cool tunes! There's more to be done (like score, enemies, narrative), but it's already very enjoyable. Thanks for the bubbles!)
PHA TXA PHA TYA PHA Wow, I really enjoyed this title. The music was nice. I'm big fan of the famicom style. As a fellow nes developer, I totally understand how limited the nes hardware is. To make this as a jam game is impressive.
I'd like to know how you guys did it? NES Maker, reskin, pure 6052 ASM, etc.. PLA TAY PLA TAX PLA RTS
Very neat idea for a mechanic, and very impressive to do it as a NES ROM. I was worried about how tightly I would be able to control the bubble, but once you get used to it, it’s actually pretty intuitive. I had a strange input problem on my Mac, but I was able to finish the game anyway. The art is awesome. The music is Very NES and oh so good, I was groovin’ the whole time. The froggy character could easily be a Nintendo IP. Loved the whole thing!! Thanks so much for bringing this by my stream. Here's a link to the VOD: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1006750294?t=3h42m16s
Very nice game, cool mechanics and art! So impressive to see a NES game made during a game jam!
get outta here... this is AMAAZING! super inspiring work y'all. I can tell you had fun making this and there's a lot of passion from each team member. Metroid inspired adorable frog fun at it's finest. On the short end but for a jam that's more than appropriate. Look forward to seeing more from these creators.
Absolutely surreal that you straight up made an NES game for Ludum Dare. The emulator I dug up to play it on (some probably-ancient version of fceux) crashed during the sax sequence but it appears that was the ending anyway.
The graphics and music are great - the game has a really nice atmosphere.
There were some *slightly* awkward collision-related issues which other people have already noted (spikes, ceilings, etc), but it's rather hard for me to fault you much for them considering you wrote this for the NES in 3 days and even many big-time commercial NES games aren't without their collision bugs.
The gameplay is fun, and I like the bubble mechanic. If I had to scramble to find a criticism, I might say that it was perhaps a bit monotonous, with no enemies and no hazards other than spikes, but it was so short and sweet that it certainly didn't overstay its welcome.
In some ways, it felt like this was just a snippet of a game, and the bubble power was just one of many abilities Mr. Froggy Guy discovered along his adventure - it's super easy to imagine this as just a slice of a full NES title, which I think says a lot.
Hell yeah, an NES game! I have the utmost respect for retro developers. The graphics were clear and cute, the music was boppin', riding the bubble was fun, and I didn't run into any bugs. Overall, I had a good time playing Frog!
This was really cool! The music and art was excellent and I liked the gameplay a lot. There were some small glitches here and there but nothing game-breaking. Would enjoy seeing this expanded into a full game!
So cool to make an NES rom! Great work, and mad props for working within those extra constraints!
That was very cool! In my opinion, a perfectly balanced difficulty: challenging enough but not frustrating. Sound design and art are both perfect for this and the game plays really, really well. Controls are smooth and responsive, at no point did I feel that the game is working against me and if I failed it was totally my own fault. Just perfect.
I encountered one bug. But that might have been a fault of the emulator, not of the game. I was using Mesen emulator on Windows. At the very end (I assume), when the froggy is playing the sax, the game crashed and gave the following error: "[Error] Game has crashed (Invalid OP code - CPU crashed.)"
Screenshot_12.jpg
Great game ! Lots of nostalgia after playing this awesome game. Great art and audio !
One of the top games of this jam:
1.) I loved that I had to download an emulator: The nostalgia factor of having to find an emulator to play the game, brought me back to high school days when I would have to download games to play throwback systems
2.) Art style is really expressive and well done for the system. Sprites are really well done.
3.) Music and ambience fits perfectly with the style.
Deltas 1.) The bubble mechanic seems to work well in some levels and buggy in others, but doesn't take away from game play. I never know if it's going to pop, and it sometimes pops early. Maybe a empty bubble (no green fill) to indicate it's about to pop.
Even with that one thing, It was a great experience.
Great game! I really like that frog, the music, the controls, the levels... and it can run on a NES! I wish it had more levels and even a boss... perhaps for a post-jam version? Great Job!
This game runs flawlessly on my Odroid Go: frogNesGameOdroidGo.png
Absolutely amazing game! I freaking love it. The mechanics are brilliant, and the difficulty curve was great. Definitely felt I was learning the mechanics while playing. It ran perfectly on my ds as well XD
Absolutely worth downloading an emulator, which I have not used since. Thank you for letting me play this on stream (forever ago)! [Here's that clip](https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1023715851?t=1h9m20s) in case you ever want to watch it again.
Excellent games, reminds me of super mario bros 2, The graphics are great and the music excellent, however I find it unfortunate that you have to use an emulator, which is not practical for everyone
