Loved it, although it took a little to understand the meaning of the icons.

Nice game! I enjoyed it!

I think I had a little bug when the game locked me on "as you grow old, you grow impatient [...]", unable to pick a choice. Finally, I killed someone, reached an end, got to relax with my favorite jawbreaker, but it says "game over", did I win?

Overall, the story is nice and immersive, but I found it hard to know what I was doing. I couldn't really "choose" which path to follow, as some of them lead to instant death. Maybe clear textual choices instead of icons would have helped? I don't know =) It would also have been nice to know when and why we got something added to our inventory, I often opened it and was like "ooh, when did I looted that?". It would have allowed us to better learn what's the best path for future plays =D

Well done on your first completed game! I really liked the graphics and the sounds, overall it's a nice little cohesive experience :) Good job!

Thanks. I ran out of time sadly, a bunch of the art isn't completed. Thank you for playing!

Thank you for playing and the feedback! I noticed some bugs right around the end of the submission time. The item menu also bugs out sometimes and you can't consume the items properly. Ideally I would've had text for when you receive an item, but I ended up settling for a quick sound. The ending says game over but it's the win state, confusing indeed. Did you hear the shot at the end?

> Did you hear the shot at the end?

I did, yes! I found it to be an awesome twist/loop on the story =D

Really nice game ! I like a lot the replayability. I was thinking it would be pretty straightforward when I saw the game over on the first choices, but it actually looks like there are a lot of possible choices, I saw that the choices seem to change if you trash the tracksuit at first.

Graphics are good, tought I did not understood what were some of the icons, especially when facing the kid at the very beginning. At first I was like "what the hell why did he beat the kid" because I was thinking it would give him the jawbreaker sweet (notice that I did not read the description under the game, so I was not aware it would be about crimes).

I like a lot the little references to mafia movies. Is Joe a reference to Joe Pesci ?

Great experience.

arya-s 2021-04-26 13:33

@littlegamer thank you for your kind feedback! Yes Joe is a reference to Joe Pesci and Tony is Tony Soprano hah.

Glad you liked it!

Congrats on your first game! It seemed well polished. The pixel art and sound effects are both well done and give that special old school vibe :)

Like others said, I didn't understand the meaning of some icons at first, but it was quite easy to try it out and come back to the same point, so no big trouble.

It's so cool that you had time to come up with a story and a bunch of situations/encounters.

Nice entry !

romeromey 2021-04-26 15:52

i think the art and the theme are really well done. it was just a bit hard to tell what the icons would do and how the different choices would affect the story!

Always happy to see pico8 entries. Very clear interface for the game, good job. I'll play through a few more times for sure.

Hilarious game! Great references to many classic italian mob movies and tv shows. You can never have enough tracksuits in your inventory, thats for sure.

Nice take on the theme! I struggled a bit reading the text as it's such low pixel count and like a few others misunderstood the controls at first, but great work especially for the compo!

damn, tony

firefart 2021-04-28 08:52

The gameplay and visuals is simple yet charming, and also the story is surprisingly immmersive, and this is on your first game jam? Awesome work and amazing game, keep it up :)

saerki 2021-04-28 09:10

A really fun Pico-8 game and not a typical one either! Nice interpretation of the theme (Mafia/Cosa Nostra is a dear subject to me) and fun gameplay for such a simple game.

There could be more options on how to deal with situations and the final fight came a bit suddenly story-wise. Still very very likable and well-executed for a Jam game. Thanks for sharing, Arya!

arya-s 2021-04-28 10:03

@firefart @saerki thanks so much for playing and leaving kind words and feedback!

prof-suarez 2021-04-29 00:40

This whole game is a mood. lol! This has definitely inspired me to want to mess with pico-8. Great Job!

arya-s 2021-04-29 03:16

@prof-suarez thanks! That's nice to hear. Pico8 is great :)

shawn-moore 2021-05-04 01:11

Nice game! The damage popups are quite polished. And wow do I feel like I'm a walking stereotype now :D Great riff on the theme.

I think it would have helped to force the player to select a story branch rather than giving a default one, since I got to the "as the years go by" three-way branch without realizing I was even making any choices.

Congratulations shipping your first complete game!

pancelor 2021-05-04 17:41

I also didn't realize I was playing the game for 3~6 encounters; I thought I was in an opening cutscene. my second run made a lot more sense and was fun!

love the take on the theme! and always happy to see pico-8 games :)

also: I can see you watched the porklike series ;)

arya-s 2021-05-07 04:59

@shawn-moore thanks! I took quite a bit over from the porklike tutorial series for this. Regarding choices, I agree but didn't have time for more. I also wanted to just tell a story of how getting onto the wrong path can snowball and feel like you have no other choice.

@pancelor thanks! Yeah porklike helped me a lot :)

brice-mahier 2021-05-17 02:39

You should be proud for a first game jam it's quite nice!
