LD45 — Start with nothing

errant by zillix 2019-10-08T07:45:10Z

Really liked the aesthetic of this game! Definitely gunna step through that shader code later! Also, getting some Pony Island vibes from this game! If you haven't played that game I'd definitely check it out!

Shift/perspective mechanic was really cool too! My main issue is that there was a point when I fell from the clouds back onto the ground later in the game and had to jump all the way back up (I must have still been holding shift).

Great game! I really enjoyed this!

The Journey with Her by cirno 2019-10-09T15:51:54Z

got through it! really like how you blended story/characterization with puzzle design! and the puzzles themselves really made me think!

great work!

lotor by torcado 2019-10-08T10:11:08Z

great mechanic, great aesthetic and great interpretation of the theme! Also, the movement of the cat felt very slick!

Minor nitpicks: - I think showing what level you are on as a transition to the next level would be a nice touch to show how far I've progressed. I understand that its also in the pause menu, but I think having something more direct would be nice. - Since you are a cat, why not 9 lives instead of 3? :smirk_cat:

Well done!

Amnesiac Adventurer by justinooncx 2019-10-10T10:42:29Z

Great puzzle game! really creative with your interpretation of the theme and great puzzle mechanics! Very impressed, good work!

Amor Fati by starvingindie 2019-10-10T10:26:34Z

Really like the challenge of making a nonviolent game. Great job!

Also, the game felt very crunchy! I like the polish!

Winter Survival by oxrock 2019-10-08T05:11:02Z

Congrats on making the game! The game fits well with the theme and I like the sound effects that you made! Also didn't know about Wolfram Tones, definitely going to experiment with that tool in the future.

Like the others, I also had trouble picking up items, so I didn't survive for too long.

Some ideas I have: - It seems like there isn't any downside to holding the sprint button, so perhaps it should be the default speed (or removed)? - To get a better sense of direction (especially back to the initial fireplace), perhaps the footprints could have been persisted? I think that would be an interesting way of figuring out where you in the world.

Once again, congrats and nice work!

SIMFLUENCER by erebus 2019-10-09T14:10:47Z

definitely the funniest game I've played so far this jam! Great voice acting!

Really like the pokemon snap/selfie mechanic. I feel like a "taking quality selfies" mechanic would work very well in VR!

Keep It That Way by Berkin 2019-10-08T05:53:22Z

Nice work! That was a fun game loop! I like the idea of customers leaving (level getting easier) as you take more "damage".

I think some more juice/feedback when a game event happens as well as some balance tweaks (maybe you get half a second to run for cover if a customer sees you) could turn this into something super fun!

Congrats on making the game!

God of the Elements by Keppu 2019-10-08T09:57:02Z

Wonderful game! Really like where you took this theme! Seems like theres a tad bit of social commentary in there too!

Nice work!

Seed by Trusty 2019-10-10T09:24:24Z

Hahaha, that song was amazing. agreed with @flynn , could not stop smiling while playing this! fantastic work!

Soundsearcher by nicross 2019-10-08T05:38:05Z

Awesome idea! I felt like I was on a beach, then eventually under a waterfall! It's cool how audio can influence your imagination like that.

It was easier for me to find locate the footsteps item using the "edge of screen" mouse method instead of WASD. And I think it's because of what @ace17 mentioned. It's more natural for me to have WASD move you in world space, regardless of the player orientation (instead of having AD change your orientation and then WS go forward and back).

Thanks for the game! Congrats!

Hold X to Focus by toasteater 2019-10-08T09:43:38Z

Got to the end! Liked the aesthetic of the game. There are some nice touches like the background moving slightly (also the intro screen is pretty slick).

Road to Something by GoldenEvolution 2019-10-09T16:38:54Z

agreed with Aret24! Felt super relaxed after beating this game. I think the music track really helped! Great mood overall!

Contraband by AdamCYounis 2019-10-10T09:15:24Z

Loved the aesthetic of this game! The color palette, the pixel art, the music, the mood...all fantastic! Particularly loved the animation of the sword attack combo! I wish there was a reason to use the combo (all the enemies died in one hit lol). I really liked how the mechanics were introduced (and...removed) as well! Crazy to think this was all done in 48 hours!

Minor nitpicks: - I too found the laser-bunny-hunger section a bit too difficult/punishing. - The first part that was a bit frustrating was the jump with a horizontal laser on the bottom and a vertical laser at the end of the jump. The fact that hitting the vertical laser causes a guaranteed slow and painful death on the horizontal laser is quite punishing lol. My initial intuition for platforming is to hold back when my character is going too far forward in the air to reduce forward momentum. In this game, however, it would cause you to go in the opposite other direction (towards your doom on the horizontal laser). Took me awhile to figure out the proper way to get through it is to jump and release the forward key (instead of holding back). I'd prefer the backwards momentum to not be so drastic. (These movement physics remind me of the way Hollow Knight moves, but I think that lower horizontal air velocity/acceleration works better when precision platforming is required). - Didn't really understand the proper way to get passed the laser in the wall jump section. Just grinded it out until I got lucky with the timing. Took me a lot of tries lol. - I thought the drone AI was a bit interesting. It wouldn't attack for a very long time, and when it did, it was instantaneous. I'd rather it attack sooner, but have a windup animation indicating that it was attacking.

Overall, fantastic game! I'm glad I got through it and got to see the ending!

Colour Shot by HumphreysMedia 2019-10-09T16:01:19Z

super juicy effects! good stuff! I also like how the pink circles keep swarming you even after your death

Thanks for all the love and constructive feedback everyone! It really means a lot!

Dead Pixels by tmullet 2019-10-08T06:15:29Z

Really liked the design of this game! Great interpretation of the theme! The controls for level building felt pretty slick. I loved the color palette and the music was super relaxing. Also, that intro screen was awesome!

Some notes I have: 1. It wasn't immediately obvious to me that the gray bars would destroy your "level-builder". I think its because I naturally phased through it on the second level, not because I wanted to avoid it, but because I just wanted to conserve my pixels. 2. There are times where I was satisfied with the level I made, but I messed up the platforming and then the level got erased. I think a better choice would have been to just respawn your character if it dies and only restart the platform creation section with "E".

Overall, great game! Had a lot of fun playing it!

Shape Invaders by GeruGames 2019-10-08T07:11:13Z

Super fun game! I really liked the powerup that sucks enemies in (forgot the name of it).

Small bug I found: the background effect (which is really cool btw!), doesn't scale with how far out the camera is zoomed.

Nice work!

A Field of Flowers by KeithSwanger 2019-10-10T10:54:24Z

Very relaxing game! Loved the growing animations of the grass and flowers! The music and sound effects were super fitting as well.

A very minor nitpick I have would be for there to be some sort of feedback when a flower is done growing (or when grass is done growing) either visual or audio.

Fantastic game!

LD47 — Stuck in a loop

The Basement by Geckoo1337 2020-10-24T21:41:42Z

Incredibly innovative game! Great work! I also loved the sound design and general aesthetic. Like others, I also wish I was smart enough to be able to fully appreciate and finish this game.

I think my one nitpick would be to have more feedback for when an object is interactable or when interacting with it doesn't do anything. I wasn't sure if I couldn't interact with an eye because it was too far away. And I also wasn't sure if I could interact with it up close because of some bug...or because I was already in that eye's gravity setting.

Overall, fantastic work!

SPÃ…RVAGN by Dustyroom 2020-10-12T04:40:43Z

Wow! What an amazingly polished game! I absolutely love the aesthetic and the sound design in this. Haven't really seen an art style like it!

And the gameplay required me to be alert / focus a lot more than expected. Great stuff!

Overall, fantastic work. I really enjoyed it!

BLOOP by danman9914 2020-10-05T18:06:31Z

I love the way that this mechanic tells a nonlinear story! It definitely has potential to be expanded on! Great idea!

And the art/audio/overall polish of the game is fantastic! Can't believe you made it in 48 hours!

ringtale by torcado 2020-10-13T03:42:23Z

Wow, what an incredibly unique game! never played a game where you had so much influence over the gravity. Great interpretation of the theme! There are a lot of interesting ideas and consequences that come from this mechanic, and I think you explored them quite nicely (though I couldn't get past the part where you can finally move blocks).

I think my major nitpick is that the controls would get a little wonky when your cursor left the window. I think it would have been easy to control if the cursor was locked in the window.

Overall, great work!

Hide and Seek by DDRKirbyISQ 2020-10-18T19:42:45Z

Fantastic work! There isn't a game this jam that kept me on my toes like this one. The art and audio were amazing, and I really loved the little details you added like the book passages. They really make the game feel alive.

BLOBIUS by chaoclypse 2020-10-08T04:10:12Z

Wow, super crunchy game! I really liked the polish on this game! You are a VFX wizard! Great work!

I think my only two issues have been mentioned in previous comments: - I wish there was some sort of anticipation / indicator for when a blob would switch sides - There are times where I wanted to go left, but went right (for example when I'm doing a full rotation counterclockwise on the inner loop, then I switch sides at the top, then want to move right, I still need to press left). It's definitely a tricky situation, because ideally if you are moving in a full rotation, you'd want to use the same button. Tough problem!

But overall, I really enjoyed it. Great work!

Friday Night Funkin by Cameron Taylor 2020-10-06T23:48:07Z

really digging the art and music in this! great work!

DEATH STRING by miziziziz 2020-10-07T03:03:46Z

This game is nice and crunchy! and after getting used to it, the lasso mechanic was a lot of fun, especially with the added dimension of being able to move with the lasso. Also like the tribal sounds used!

I will say that my game glitched/lagged out a bit on the final boss fight, I think there might have been too many things going on in the scene.

Overall, great work!

Oplo by Harry Alissavakis 2020-10-06T21:54:56Z

Super fun game! Reminds me a bit of Crypt of the Necrodancer! One thing about the loop mechanic I really like is being able to hit an enemy on the other edge of the board (hope you liked using that modulo operator)

The polish and lighting/shader wizardry was also on point. It looks super professional.

The only nitpick I have is that I wish there was an indication between a warping slime and a slime that moves to an adjacent tile (maybe a slightly different model or something). A potential remedy to this would be to announce each slimes next move (a la "Into the Breach")

Overall, great work!

Crypt Loop by Los 2020-10-06T17:54:00Z

Very nice puzzle game! Having colors and shapes as two separate controls made it really interesting!

And the fact that it was procedurally generated is impressive as well! Great work!

Dude Ranch by ColeSlaughter 2020-10-11T07:51:10Z

absolutely love the character design of this game! Those quadruped dudes are hilarious.

And the game was super well crafted and polished as well! I really liked how unobtrusive, yet descriptive the tutorial was. And all the other aspects of the game (sound fx, ui, etc) were solid too!

I found the controls to be intuitive, though I will admit that my first instinct was to make circular motions with my mouse and then fling it in the direction I wanted (probably harder to implement lol).

Overall, great work! I really enjoyed it!

Red Snow: The Thirteen Dwarves by undefinist 2020-10-06T02:29:48Z

Awesome game! I had lot of fun playing it!

Always a fan of the low-poly, desaturated color aesthetic. And I like the mechanics as well! Particularly the fact that friendly fire exists.

The only nitpicks I have are the mentioned fact that you can walk outside the play area and I wish the enemies had some sort of windup/anticipation action when attacking.

But overall, great work!

Routine by Lawrence 2020-10-05T18:30:20Z

Great game! I can definitely see some parallels to the real world (especially during this lockdown).

And I really like the aesthetic here, reminds me of an old school computer game!

Roundabout Way by Quandtm 2020-10-08T03:21:24Z

That was hilarious! Seeing the wreckage I brought forth made me laugh pretty hard hahah. The cheerful music fit very well with the carnage.

And the gameplay loop was addicting too! Great work!

You're A Loop by RIBOUT Horace 2020-10-06T07:59:58Z

Caterpillar Cowboy by eldogg 2020-10-12T05:14:54Z

Love the humor and music in this especially. Put a smile on my face!

Great work!

Nekomancer by Sozey 2020-10-06T18:24:24Z

I really liked the 3d models you made and the unlit color palette you went with! Obviously I had to play as Chonk the Formidable.

The two notes that I have are: 1. it took me a bit of time to understand that the guards loop their actions after they die 2. I felt that some of the text was unnecessary and it scrolled too slowly

Overall, great work!

Under The Moon by Albuquerque 2020-10-06T03:13:47Z

Great take on the "Stuck in a Loop" theme and great artwork! That moon especially!

Beyond Death by Trypants 2020-10-12T03:40:58Z

That was really fun! I really like the voxel world you all constructed! The way the world and music changed the more deaths you had was particularly awesome! I also liked the dynamic camera work and character animations!

My two nitpicks are I didn't understand that the cave went to another area, and that the camera got a bit jittery when the character was going up steps (perhaps some smoothing/damping of the camera motion would help here).

Overall, fantastic work!

Jazz It Up by Elyaradine 2020-10-13T03:59:13Z

I was vibing super hard with this game, even though I don't have much musical experience. Seems like a great way of introducing people like me to improv. I also absolutely love the artstyle of this game!

Great work!

MonkeyVM by abvadabra 2020-10-06T19:00:46Z

Great Zach-like! Who knew that while loops could be so hard to debug? (perhaps I don't have what it takes to be a programmer   ).

This was a lovely showcase of simple mechanics, and the polish in this game was awesome (from UI, to VFX, to audio). It even stored my save file hahah.

GLITCH LOOP by ZakAmana 2020-10-12T04:58:01Z

Wow, I am absolutely blown away by this game. Everything about it is so clean (design, aesthetic, sound, ui, all of it!!!). A lot of jammers did the "ghost loop" gameplay mechanic, but limiting it to just one loop was a very smart decision and leads to some very interesting consequences (there was a particular consequence in level 1-6 that I really enjoyed). I think this mechanic has a lot of potential to be expanded.

Overall, fantastic work! Can't believe this was made in 48 hours, you are a machine.

Hyperloop by very dark lord 2020-10-06T23:59:23Z

Impressive that so many different people can make such a cohesive game in 3 days. Great work!

I especially enjoyed the sound design and pixel art in this game. And there was also that interesting fact that you lose vision when you reload. Great idea!

you are dead by noahw 2020-10-06T03:40:06Z

I really liked the aesthetic of this game, and the music track was great too! Really got a "between two worlds" ethereal vibe from it.

Great work!

Chrono Curse by Hermitao 2020-10-06T04:14:26Z

Wow, sooo many great things happening in this game!

That boss fight was awesome! Really liked having to dodge and weave around those attacks and I especially liked the fact that the pillars (normally used for cover) would move and be used as attacks. Gives a lot more dynamic to the gameplay. Since I enjoyed it so much, maybe I should play Furi and Enter the Gungeon?

At first I thought that the only changes were that the enemies had more health each iteration, but some of the things added in iterations 3 and 4 really heightened the mood. (didn't get past iteration 4 though, not sure if theres even more)

The use of lighting in this game was great! I especially liked how the muzzle flash works in a dimly light room.

And the track was a banger too.

Some nitpicks/observations I have: - I wish I could move along walls better, I think the issue was that the pillars of the walls had colliders on them. - During the dimly lit iterations, the doorways were a bit hard to see, so I got lost a couple times. - My playstyle was to just ignore enemies / dodge bullets and then rush to the boss. Not sure if this is ideal.

In any case, fantastic work! I really enjoyed playing it!

If you think about it, ain't a sling a murder loop? by matthewrobo 2020-10-24T21:10:58Z

Great gamefeel and great use of sound effects! It took me a while to get murder loop timing right, but once I got it the game got pretty addictive!

I also found the aesthetic to work nicely as well! Great work!

Little Pirate Adventure by Bauke Regnerus 2020-10-06T18:06:06Z

I really like the cartoony art style of this game! Very chill experience!

AXIS LOOPER by Eduard Hauer 2020-10-06T07:40:07Z

Fun game! There are a couple little things in this game I like, such as the way the shapes cast shadows and the way the block turns to its side (not sure if intentional or not). And I did have to mute the application as well. I think the sound effects would have been enough.

Overall, Great work!

Kosmosrunda by patetfisk 2020-10-12T05:41:43Z

What a great entry! Absolutely love the artstyle and music of this game! Great work!

Torus The Dolphin by walaber 2020-10-08T05:11:10Z

I can confidently say that this is the best torus-based dolphin game I've ever played!

I really liked the aesthetics of this game! It reminds me of an old-school pc game. It's very cohesive! (Also the dolphin animations were fantastic!)

I always dig when people experiment with alternative control schemes! The dolphins leaps out of the water were especially cool. I think one thing that was a little confusing to me was how left/right would control the dolphin. I feel like it could either turn the dolphin around (I think that is what it does here) or rotate the dolphin around the torus. I kept imagining the dolphin doing the latter, so I never quite got used to the controls.

Overall, great work!

Splines 'n Shapes by SharkWithLasers 2020-10-05T02:52:17Z

Hey @lawrence! thanks for the feedback! It's not directly stated, but the order that the orb has to reach the shapes is on side count. (so it needs to go triangle -> square -> pentagon in this particular level). I'll try to think of other ways of explaining that within the game (ideally without explicitly stating it).

And Shapes is awesome! Definitely couldn't have made this game without it!

Splines 'n Shapes by SharkWithLasers 2020-10-06T02:58:50Z

@undefinist - Thanks for the suggestions! I agree that having a way to reset to a default state would've been a nice quality of life improvement. And I had that same idea of points to avoid and moving points! But alas, I ran out of time hahah. Another mechanic I was thinking of was having multiple orbs / loops to control

@hermitao - Thanks for the feedback! The order of the shapes is based on the number of sides the shape has (so triangle -> square -> pentagon -> etc ...). It seems that there needs to be more indication of the order. (perhaps I could use color, or dots/numbers?)

@ everyoneelse - Thanks for the feedback! It means a lot!

Splines 'n Shapes by SharkWithLasers 2020-10-08T05:29:47Z

@marcmagus @walaber - thanks! I definitely plan on exploring this concept more, and it definitely seems like this would translate to touchscreens pretty well. We'll see how it turns out!

@honey-pony - thanks for the feedback! One thing I noticed about this game is that people were able to get a very good intuition of how control points affect a curve pretty quickly! I hope that it could be applied to situations outside this game (not sure what all the other real world use cases of splines are though lol).

Also, glad you made it to the end! It looping back to the start is kind of a joke on theme (the levels themselves loop hah). But yes, I agree that some payoff at the end would have been nice.

As for the dot missing, the two things I can think of are: 1. the dot travelled past the whole shape between two frames (this could especially be the case if the fps is low...and if the dot is moving fast) 2. the loop invalidates itself after one revolution. So there might be the case that you nudged the loop so that the triangle is placed after its original spot.

It's probably both hahah.

@ everyoneelse - Thank you for all the feedback and kind words. It's much appreciated

Splines 'n Shapes by SharkWithLasers 2020-10-09T05:37:41Z

@honey-pony - when play testing with someone, we were able to create the "skipping valid shapes" bug. I believe its because of low framerate and the orb is moving fast. It's a bit tricky, but I'll try to implement a solution tonight or tomorrow. (btw, were you happening to use a macbook or a lowend laptop?)

@duke - thanks! Totally reasonable that the game got stale for you. I hoped to add more mechanics but ran out of time. I'm hoping that exploring new mechanics can help keep engagement up.

@overlook-studios - thank you! It's much appreciated!

@lombax - glad you made it to the end! It does reset to the beginning (a bit of a metajoke on the "Stuck in a Loop" theme )

Splines 'n Shapes by SharkWithLasers 2020-10-10T00:29:15Z

@honey-pony sorry for spamming you, but just wanted to let you know that a postjam build is up that helps mitigate the low fps collision detection issue. I'd love to hear if it solves your issue or not

Splines 'n Shapes by SharkWithLasers 2020-10-10T02:06:21Z

@honey-pony ahh not a problem! the bug had a chance of happening at high framerates as well (just not nearly as often), so that might have been the case. I don't think I have anything specific for you to test. Thanks for the offer though!

Splines 'n Shapes by SharkWithLasers 2020-10-18T19:59:51Z

@ddrkirbyisq glad that the game gave you a bit of intuition about how these weird loop things work!

I think that resetting the curve would be a good addition. And I agree that it isn't the most intuitive to know how colors are ordered, I think difficulty arises from the fact that we are dealing with a loop.

If it were just a curve going in one direction, then a 2 color gradient could be used to show order. But because of the loop, the gradient needs to loop back to the starting color as well. A 2 color gradient would be especially bad in this case because the colors on the loop would be mirror (e.g. red -> blue -> red). Because of this, I decided to use a 3-color gradient. (found this one online: https://uigradients.com/#Atlas ).

I think that perhaps numbering the control points, (and perhaps numbering the target shapes) would be the most direct way of showing ordering. (Though I still think I'd need to figure out the best way to show that the last control points connects to the first). Perhaps there's a way to number these shapes that doesn't detract from the aesthetic I'm going for?

Splines 'n Shapes by SharkWithLasers 2020-10-19T20:26:34Z

@ddrkirbyisq Good point on how hue can represent order. I'll definitely play around with that.

And I also agree that there should be multiple things can signify order (instead of color alone). Controls points pointing to other control points could be a solution. Another idea is to have a faint line from the control point to the place on the loop it most affects.

So many options... seems like the best way to go about is to implement them all and see which works best!

Super Box Bot's Package Push by Honey Pony 2020-10-06T05:12:47Z

Wow, this is really well polished for being made in 48 hours! Great work! The audio, artwork, UI etc. All solid!

The puzzles were very thought out as well! Reminds me of Zachtronics games. I will say that I got stuck a lot earlier than I expected. Maybe I don't have what it takes to be a coder

For { } by SoupStoreGames 2020-10-08T02:13:14Z

I really liked the mechanics of this game and its a great interpretation of the theme! In particular, how blocks interact with orange blocks (aka get incinerated). I think you introduced each mechanic well, though I'm not sure if the text is necessary (I'm of the opinion that the mechanics should explain themselves). I think it was an interesting choice to be able to put a block over a number (and it would not execute for that number), but ideally, it would be good to know graphically what the number is under the block somehow. (Definitely not an easy task with PICO-8 hahah).

Another nitpick I'd have is that an undo button would be super helpful here (hard to implement with such little time though).

Overall, great work!!

and btw it was great chatting with you in marcmagus's channel the other day!

Paper Planes by SamDemaine 2020-10-11T08:04:15Z

Super addicting game! great work! got to 11 and gotta throw in the towel after that.

Love that the design works thematically on multiple levels (the controls, the fact you can loop across the map, the clones are loops what you do). Love the way the difficulty ramps up. Love the aesthetics. Love it!

Super clean game. Great work!

Beat Bash by Overlook Studios 2020-10-08T04:11:33Z

Wow, this pixel art is absolutely stunning. I especially enjoyed those background transitions.

The Titan's grave by BadPiggy 2020-10-06T21:09:17Z

I like the mixture of pixel art and 3d! as well as the player sharing health with the boss. Interesting choice!

I really liked this mechanic! The difficulty ramp increases as the loop shrinks, and the combination of health packs and asteroids kept me on my toes. Very clean design!

My one nitpick is that there wasn't any pitch variation on the asteroid shielded sound effects. Having pitch variation helps diversify the sound. Here is a good example of how it helps: - https://youtu.be/pmSAG51BybY?t=746 (start at 12:26)

Overall, great work! Especially for a first jam! Looking forward to seeing what you make in the future!

Interesting game! I haven't really seen a graphic style like that before, it was really cool. Agreed with nidrig that I got some Conway's Game of Life vibes.

Audio track was nice too!

I love where you took this theme! and I love the aesthetic as well! This is already polished enough to be a mobile game thats for sure. Crazy that this was done in such little time.
