Simple and amazing entry! Love the concept, perfect usage of the theme. Graphics/animations are butter smooth and plays like a charm. Awesome job!

clemonades 2019-10-07 15:47

Loved it! The animations and graphics are great and the concept is very unique and fits the theme wonderfully. Great job :)

Simple but awesome! GREAT take on the theme. Literally nothing. Took me a couple tries to figure out what the goal was but once I got it, it was a fun puzzle to solve. Excellent job with the bomb - no notes on how that worked but I immediately knew the mechanic.

sciman101 2019-10-08 01:32

The aesthetic and polish is really nice considering it's for the compo - good job! Maybe I'll get past 4 levels someday

aconfusedragon 2019-10-08 03:17

The concept behind this is really interesting and well thought out and implemented!! Placing stuff is super satisfying but you almost get hesitant because you don't know if its gonna be a obstacle or not!! Amazing work!!!!

taffyko 2019-10-08 03:50

really excellent concept and execution! perfectly minimalistic in the most enjoyable way, while being surprisingly innovative and fun to play with — really great work torc, especially for the compo!

shieldgenerator7 2019-10-08 05:39

a really cool idea!

(1) it needs to have some way to reset the level entirely, because you could fill the entire level up with blocks / hazards and have no chance of completing it. in the first level it's not a big deal, but in later levels it's a hassle to have to redo the entire game because you placed random hazards in a way that was unwinnable.

(2) it would be nice to know what the next thing you're placing is, but i understand if the surprise is part of the game design.

(3) i really like this idea but it definitely needs some form of in-game tutorial. like make a first level that gives you the star, the cat, and a few blocks, and have it display the "enter" key on screen to let players know they need to press it.

overall really cool. if you fix the bug where i can't reset the entire level, i'll give you more stars

torcado 2019-10-08 08:27

@shieldgenerator7 hm. every single one of these points is already implemented. there is a 'retry level' button on the pause screen, in fact this is the main aspect of the objective of the game, being that you get 3 'lives' (retries) with which you attempt to get as far as possible until running out. This is mentioned in the description under the game yes, not being able to see what you are placing is integral to the design. so much so that it is implemented as its own mechanic in the form of a powerup, allowing you to see the pieces you are placing for a certain amount of time. the first level always contains only blocks, and the second only blocks and spikes, by design. Pressing enter to start the level is also described in the info below the game.

shieldgenerator7 2019-10-08 08:34

@torcado oh. i didnt see that, i read the "Playing" section and thought the rest was download links / download instructions. thanks for the tip

torcado 2019-10-08 08:40

@shieldgenerator7 ooh that's understandable. I'll break up that text a bit!

sharkwithlasers 2019-10-08 10:11

great mechanic, great aesthetic and great interpretation of the theme! Also, the movement of the cat felt very slick!

Minor nitpicks: - I think showing what level you are on as a transition to the next level would be a nice touch to show how far I've progressed. I understand that its also in the pause menu, but I think having something more direct would be nice. - Since you are a cat, why not 9 lives instead of 3? :smirk_cat:

Well done!

unept 2019-10-08 12:43

So clever. Totally fits the theme, is innovative, and fun. Some of the obstacles are very innovative, like the flashing squares. (though I wish they were a teeny bit smaller.) You managed to take a "random" mechanic and still give players the ability to have control over making a level to some extent.

janderson-barboza 2019-10-08 16:29

Loved the game! So much fun! The sounds and art combine and the idea was amazing!

ok ... a block ... oh, a thorn ... trap ... laser ... bombs ... oh, the cat! ... oops, I'm surrounded! hahaha

One of those games that executed the theme extremely well, maybe the art work could be better ? I'd like to see more colors and such, rather than a minimalistic black/white, but that's just me. But that doesn't mean it's not polished, it's well done!

torcado 2019-10-08 16:40

@sharkwithlasers 1. fair point! that would be a fine addition 2. not a cat! 🦝

torfi 2019-10-08 17:06

Brilliant concept and well executed! My friend watching me play described it as "Mario Maker Russian Roulette" which I think is a perfect description. I like this a lot.

silkworm-sweatshop 2019-10-09 00:18

Really nice take on the theme! I like the minimalist art and it looks good, especially in motion. I'd probably prefer being able to redo a level as many times as you want since later on it really comes down to luck and good RNG if you can make it through a level or not.

jezzamon 2019-10-09 05:59

Oh man, this is such a genius game! I had a lot of fun playing it! Well done

aeveis 2019-10-09 07:56

Really nice! I got to level 10, and accidentally did a spawn death. The raccoon animation is very nice, though the hitbox sometimes feels a bit long (perhaps matching the raccoon but I imagine the raccoon is squishable and can survive some closer calls before exploding). I kept trying to find a shortcut for "retry level" as it's just text and not a button shape, but also every other control is keyboard. The preview in the corner helped me get further along. Nice job!

arzi 2019-10-09 14:28

Probably the most innovative game in LD45! And also the most literal use of the theme. I love the idea, but find it a bit too random. Since you can't know which piece comes next, it's a bit too easy (and frustrating) to create impossible levels and have to reset constantly.

whycardboard 2019-10-10 00:02

really enjoyed this little game! great use of the theme, and the execution of the idea was wonderful! my only nitpick is the (not a cat) raccoon showing up... 30 or more items in. makes it little tricky, and impossible in some cases. other than that, incredible work!

kaiclavier 2019-10-11 01:03

Took me a second to figure out what was going on, then it all clicked! Trying to build around mistakes blindly or rushing when the eye powerup appears is fun. I screamed when I accidentally placed one of those spinning death trap things over the goal I placed, but still managed to make it, anyway!

thestoff 2019-10-11 04:26

super fun concept. This game was very amusing and played well with the theme!

shabbyrtist 2019-10-11 18:08

Simple but cool idea! Very good implementation! it was a lot of fun to play

u-tsang-clan 2019-10-12 19:42

There seems to be a bug with moving platforms that move offscreen. While they are on screen they are intangible and once they move off screen they never return.

sean-s-leblanc 2019-10-14 22:01

oh i like this a lot. it does wear out its welcome pretty quickly after the first dozen or so levels, but the design kind of makes that inevitable.

the abilities to see what you're placing or remove blocks felt like they were also rng, and i feel like if anything could be made more strategic, it would be having these be more intentional (e.g. getting one after every X things placed)

pl4typus 2019-10-17 11:43

Suuuuper cool game. Wished there was a checking on how close kill-object spawns next to the player spawn point because there was a lot of times were I couldn't play the levels because I triggered an instant death collision when starting the level.

However the whole idea is unbelievably well executed. This is potentially a real releasable game with an aesthetic similar to Baba Is You's.

The amount of new mechanics that comes one after another is impressive. Wished there was music tho, although the sfx were nice.

The bonuses on the placing phase (seeing what we can place, removing objects) is well-thought and even if rng-based is ok I believe it could be bonus-objects we could collect in previous levels and thus use them willingly in the placement phase.

scott-redrup 2019-10-25 16:38

What! This is so cool, really impressed with your take on the theme and that you managed to create this in just 48 hours. Everything is really solid, audio fits the simple graphics. Neat entry!

brokenmirrormedia 2019-10-28 08:14

This is a really cool game, and is really well polished. The art style and animations are great (I love the main character's run cycle!), and everything is clear and well communicated. I did prefer the game when I had the vision powerup, reminds me of tetris where you can plan one step ahead but still have to think big picture, but I can see how that would make the game too easy (throw all hazards off to the side until you can put the player right on top of the star). I wish there was some checks to make sure a giant object doesn't spawn intersecting with the player, because that can mess up a level, and I wish there was an easier way to restart a level. Still, really good work here!

torcado 2019-10-28 08:53

@brokenmirrormedia thank you! what do you mean by "restart a level"? if you mean retrying an attempt at beating a level, you can simply press 'R'. if you mean retrying an attempt at building a level, you can press 'Escape' and click 'retry level'

brokenmirrormedia 2019-10-28 19:21

@torcado I meant restarting building a level. Usually if I messed up building the level it was unplayable regardless of how many times I replayed it, so I'd have to rebuild it, but when doing that you have to hit escape, click the button, then wait for the timer, which seems unnecessary. It's not a big deal, but just something that I noticed seemed like it took too long for an action that is more necessary than restarting the platforming part of the game.
