ratrat44 2020-10-04 23:50

The links for the game do not seem to be working. Maybe it is still in draft mode?

mikoziq 2020-10-04 23:53

@ratrat44 Hey, does it work now?

mikoziq 2020-10-04 23:55

Should be public now... first time using Itch.io ...

ludumdaredevil 2020-10-05 00:08

Very cool game! The only thing I would suggest is giving the player more feed back when it gets hit with an astroid.

mikoziq 2020-10-05 00:17

@ludumdaredevil Thanks! I was trying to get some sort of 'feedback' like Cinemachine shake, but didn't have time left, cause as always I ignored it and worked on 'good ending'. Only soundques at best. Will improve!

ratrat44 2020-10-05 00:17

Yes it works now! I like the idea you had for it! The art and sound are pretty good too. The speed of some of the things is a bit odd.

fabdynamic 2020-10-05 00:19

The mac version doesnt run (and in fact decompresses from 33MB to 1GB using several different compression tools), but let me know if you have any updates for mac and I'll give them a shot. I'd love to see your game because it looks really cool! If you reply to this I'll see it and check it out again. :)

eriku 2020-10-05 00:21

Nice! I found the fleet with a score of 39 490. Neat concept, and an interesting take on "loop", haha. I think it would been more challenging had the meteors spawned at the top and bottom as well. In my play-through I kept the opening up top and rotated to let in health or shields when they came by. Overall a fun little game that could be expanded on.

tulipekoni 2020-10-05 00:22

I like how you flipped the concept of looping shieds. Solid entry, good job!

dr-v 2020-10-05 00:33

Its a very nice simple to understand concept with lots of room to grow.

mikoziq 2020-10-05 00:33

@fabdynamic Frankly I just used MacOS builder 'cAuSe iT sHoUlD wOrK'. I have MBP in my office and I can test it tommorow. I will try to make it work and will notify you asap!

mikoziq 2020-10-05 00:35

@ratrat44 The speed of 'projectiles' is randomized. I have approx. 22 spawners and everything is a bit RNG. I think I should have put less range on 'entrySpeed' variable. Thanks for checking it out!

mikoziq 2020-10-05 00:36

@tulipekoni Thanks! Will check your entry as well :)

mikoziq 2020-10-05 00:38

@eriku Thanks for checking out! I have 'Spawners' situated mostly on the sides of the screen. Hence all the projectiles are instantly forced on your location, I thought it may got too hard too fast. I have plenty of features to apply to this game, but first I need to refactor it completely because my code is such BS I don't even know how it holds up haha :)

mikoziq 2020-10-05 00:39

@dr-v Thanks for checking out!

dinoraz 2020-10-05 00:54

Definitely has some room for improvement. It can be very easy to the game to desync asteroids in a way that makes them near impossible to block, especially if you're low on shield (which is often hard to avoid since getting extra shield is often RNG in of itself). Not a bad concept for an endless style game though.

mikoziq 2020-10-05 01:02

@dinoraz Thanks for the feedback! Can't deny the RNGesus is keeping this game entertaining  Upon refactoring, I will focus more on gameplay loop :)

nethead 2020-10-05 02:12

wow, very aesthetically pleasing game! great use of simple shapes. i found this to be a lot of fun, partially because it reminded me of an old game called airburst that i played a ton as a kid ^^ great job

fabdynamic 2020-10-05 02:21

@mikoziq I got it to work on MacOSX Catalina!

To get this working on Mac #

I just had to run this command:

`chmod +x loopfieldMacOS.app/Contents/MacOS/*`

and then it worked like a charm.

Filesize Quirk ###

There was only one weird thing: It decompresses from 33MB zipped to 994.7MB for some reason. While worth fixing that decompression thing is not a big deal (for me anyway) and in case it helps I ran some Disk Inventory X (fantastic program btw) and most of that space is taken up by one file:

`loopfieldMacOS.app/Contents/Resources/Data/sharedassets0.assets.resS`

Normal Mac Gatekeeper Workaround ###

Just like with every other game like this on MacOSX I had to do the usual: rightclick->open->open to get around the MacOS Gatekeeper.

None of that is a big deal because this is a fun game and nice work especially for just 48hrs!

cosmicpickle 2020-10-05 07:41

I played this more than I thought I would. Got 32000 points. I liked it a lot. Very original. Fits the theme well. The graphics are great. It has a lot of potential. One thing I think would benefit the game a lot is if you make the speed of the asteroids and powerups consistent with the score. By that I mean keeping it random to some extend, but starting slow and getting faster with score increase. As it is now at the beginning the game feels very difficult and then starts feeling very easy. Other than that loved it.

namidasai 2020-10-05 13:01

Nice little game with a core loop that works and can get you hooked. What I liked the most about this one is the fact you made the power-ups blocked by the shield as well. It's a nice contrast and spin on the formula that really worked! Also the fact that if you restore your shield, then it's harder to get health etc. It's a really neat trick there, there's a lot of subtle innovation packed there for a simple game, well done!

spiderhead20 2020-10-05 13:25

A great and simple idea, I kept playing it for quite a long time, this should be a nice mobile game.

aterlamia 2020-10-05 14:29

I like it, not shooting the asteroids nut using the shield. They were sometimes so fast it was impossible to actually defend against but i had fun playing this

mikoziq 2020-10-05 14:37

@cosmicpickle @namidasai @spiderhead20 @aterlamia Thanks for feedback! It's very uplifting.

jin9310 2020-10-05 15:22

Really sweet entry and the take on the theme. Would be great to have some music on the background but other than that I have really enjoyed the game. Great job!

mark-kelly 2020-10-05 15:51

Really fun, great job! I think that maybe you should have the shield powerups only heal the shield a little bit, not all the way back to full health. Great job!

anomay 2020-10-05 16:42

Time is health,health is shield

What a simple but useful idea.Good!

clemonades 2020-10-05 19:15

The core loop is great. Cute graphics, simple but fun game! Nice job

shan-hsgames 2020-10-05 20:26

I liked the style, gameplay was smooth and graphics were nice. Overall, it was a cool game!

ribout-horace 2020-10-05 20:38

It's cool to play it, pretty simple, but frustating when bonus goes at full speed, while some projectil take so much time to come... But the "dissolution" effect is so cool ! Plus the sound effect are good

bereg 2020-10-05 20:56

Very solid entry for the first timer. I like the feel of it, it's simple yet challenging. Great job!

roolow 2020-10-05 22:19

Well I don't believe I've played one like this before. Sometimes I ended up in unfair situations, but it still held my interest until the bitter end. Great idea, and done well!

elysiagriffin 2020-10-05 23:45

20,000 high score yeee :D

dharby 2020-10-06 00:17

Very cool ambience and mood in this one. Nice job!

indivicivet 2020-10-06 00:31

the shield blocking everything is a nice gameplay concept. the graphics and vfx/sfx are pretty. ^__^ however I think it's too easy once you understand the basic idea, I got bored and stopped playing at 30k :(

retrospecter 2020-10-06 01:14

Really neat concept. I really dig the visuals. One area to explore is figuring out how to give the player more choice on a moment to moment basis. Maybe having it so the player can refill there shield whenever they want (based of a gauge) might be interesting as it encourages some risk vs reward.

johnwayyyne 2020-10-06 03:44

really liked the simplicity of this one! Really good job! Fit the theme well too!

worblir 2020-10-06 04:33

Good job! The graphics were simple but effective and it was super easy to pick up. As a note, on my end, some of the audio got a bit rough when multiple asteroids hit the shield at once. Overall, it was fun and if you want to, I feel like this could work well on mobile as well!

nerdytopic 2020-10-06 05:40

At first I wasn't sure what the little colored triangles would do, but I knew right off the bat that they were "good" and the red was "bad". Nice work there! I did run into a weird... "feature" where if you pressed escape while on the main homepage some text overwrites the "quit" button.

mikoziq 2020-10-06 10:23

@jin9310 Thanks for playing! My audio creation skills are not yet on the level I would like, so I sticked to the main Theme for now :)

@mark-kelly That was my initial idea. However, due to my current barrier timing limitations, I decided to leave it and finish the mechanic. As one commenter ( @namidasai ) mentioned, that gives actually gameplay options when you can regenerate full shielding but you're low on health and see health block approaching. It's a tradeoff :)

@indivicivet The difficulty spike is randomized unfortunately, I will express it in Post LD game definitely. Same goes with more points gain with less shield :) Oh no, you almost finished the game and you quit :( Sad times.

@retrospecter Thanks, the concept of regenerating shield whenever is good concept, however I wanted to give player as little control as possible to focus on incoming projectiles. May think about it in post LD though!

@worblir Sfx is something I got feedback from other people as well. Thinking about 'fixing' it now but don't know whether that's a fix to bug or a feature

@nerdytopic Thanks for playing! Ah yes, another boolean to add haha. Will fix that :)

@anomay @clemonades @shan-hsgames @ribout-horace @bereg @roolow @elysiagriffin @dharby @johnwayyyne and others, thanks for playing and enjoy Ludum Dare!

narffy 2020-10-06 10:47

its awesome I love it ! good job !

2020-10-06 16:27

Very nice concept you got there, you could port this on mobile, could be even more interesting ! Great job

mikoziq 2020-10-06 16:29

@narffy Thanks! I appreciate it!

@ctiss Thank you! I will actually attempt that :) Or maybe even make it playble using pad. Appreciate the feedback!

pfs 2020-10-06 16:32

Really nice simple game. Well done!

thegamerasd 2020-10-06 16:38

Nice! I like your take on the theme.

vivien-fargette 2020-10-06 17:09

Pretty nice entry you got here: nice mechanics, simple but good graphics with clear visual on "good one" versus "bad ones". I would just say that having music in game instead of just in the main menu would have been nice. Also, are there winning conditions?(to know if winning was impossible or if I am just too bad :p)

mikoziq 2020-10-06 17:13

@pfs @thegamerasd Thank you for the feedback, appreciate it!

@vivien-fargette There's a 'good ending' - just survive for about 5 minutes :sweat_smile:

n8dev 2020-10-06 17:37

Simple, but nice! I enjoyed it, maybe use a different font other than the default, just to make it look better. And, make the hit sound quieter, and set the pitch to something random within a set range just so the player isn't hearing the same sound every time. Nice job! Feel free to check out my submission :)

gonzalol 2020-10-06 17:50

Smooth. Beautiful setting, easy to play (thanks for including instructions). Great job! I got 21960 points. Maybe you can include some new features and events in a second version.

quinn-patrick 2020-10-06 18:08

This is a pretty fun little game! I have no real complaints, except that the game becomes unresponsive when the mouse leaves the window, but I'm not holding that against you since I've had problems with it in the past, too. My only advice is to go bigger, as this game is really simple even for 48 hours. Nice job, though.

meek-bits 2020-10-06 18:39

36869 on third attempt :)

Fun to play and smoothly executed. Menu music fits the genre and moving stars make a nice effect.

madbookstudios 2020-10-06 19:54

Fun game, I liked the space theme. I found the effects when you destroy the meteors to be satisfying along this the exploding sound effect! Really nice job :)

sophiemae0 2020-10-06 23:00

This was a really fun game! My only critique is that I wish it progressed more, after a couple of minutes it started to feel a bit repetitive.

indiedevdan 2020-10-07 00:48

Cool game! A little repetitive, but still fun!

lanalux 2020-10-07 01:57

Beautiful design!! <3_<3

Fun mechanics too. Makes me think of reverse basketball lol

pranjalbisht 2020-10-07 07:42

Simple idea, solid execution, great all around. Boy those superfast asteroids! At times I would react to superfast powerups and just destroy them by reflex haha. That was fun!

remzo 2020-10-07 08:01

Nicely done! I'm not too good though, only got 13290 points! It got quite tricky towards the end. I like the effect on the asteroids when they hit the shield.

kuro 2020-10-07 08:03

loopfield.png

Gets repetive after a while, but really original idea, and fun to play. I said it before and I'll say it again: I love well executed simple graphics. Good job!

cakii23 2020-10-07 17:25

Such a simple and fun game, loved it! Is it your first game?

kultisti 2020-10-07 17:53

oh that was super clever way of using the shield, both keeping the Blocks away, but also leaving some room for the powerups. And welcome to LudumDare!!!

games-by-tom 2020-10-07 18:39

Neat and simplistic graphics, a good minimalist approach to sound effects (even if they are a little monotone and could be pitched up/down a bit based on their speed)

What you could change a bit:

loopfield.PNG

1) This huge block of text, a few bullet points would probably fit better

and 2) the speed of the power-ups, they seem to be the fastest by default and are often very hard to catch

Keep up the good work!

nocity 2020-10-07 19:37

Feels good to control and has an interesting contrast between big and small shield, with the big shield not being a pure advantage because it makes it harder to catch powerups. The sound effects seem to have very different volumes making it hard for me to adjust it to a comfortable level but overall the game is great

renge 2020-10-07 21:36

Nice little experience! I had fun playing it on stream! One suggestion would be to make the shield shrink faster when it's smaller, so you spend more time with a full shield. Just an idea.

benslaney 2020-10-07 21:50

Hey Miko, thanks for playing our game on your stream earlier! Really enjoyed this, simple idea that is well executed. Can't say my high score was amazing however... Would have been nice to have some variation in pitch of sound effects just to avoid repetition. Aside from that great job :)

nick-rafalski 2020-10-07 23:32

This is really polished and well done. The main mechanic is pretty novel, and the gameplay is fun. It seemed like sometimes the random spawning worked out that you HAD to take a hit to grab an upgrade, but it really didn't hurt too much (just my pride). The whole aesthetic with the art and music are really cohesive which is always impressive for a compo entry. Nice job!

eduardo-yukio 2020-10-08 02:55

I really liked this game! You took a very simple concept and made it fun, making us have to decide quickly if we want to block a projectile or not. Very good! The graphics and audio work well, too, I think for a first jam you did great!

It would be the icing on the cake if it had a ranking system. Without the ranking, there is not much motivation to keep playing and break the record. But as a simple and short experience, it's great!

dock-frankenstein 2020-10-08 14:35

Good game. On issue, when you go back from the how to play menu the music resets. It sound weird

atmospherium 2020-10-08 15:55

Nice gameplay - straightforward but challenging, best I scored was 30320. Graphics felt super polished with a great use of contrast and bloom.

idan-rooze 2020-10-08 16:31

Very cool game, I thought how your shield was both a blessing and a curse was very interesting. Didn't manage to get the good ending though! I liked that some enemies move really damn slow, very tense! Good luck and congratz on the game!

eugenik 2020-10-09 00:03

Very stylish

brorenata 2020-10-09 01:13

Nice, simple design. Core mechanic is well executed. Main points of feedback I have:

- larger font on the 'how to play' menu - some background music for the actual game, not just main menu - it might be beneficial to have a narrower range of projectile speeds, the fastest ones felt a little unfair and like blocking was mostly luck as opposed to reacting in time - I noticed there did not seem to be any projectile from directly above or below. Think it would be good to add for variety sake but also because more spawn points helps spread things out. Having projectiles only from the left or right essentially guarantees you have to take damage once your shield is less than 2/3

arron-fowler 2020-10-09 09:45

Solid clean game. All elements worked as expected. Once you've got it there is not much pull to continue but that is where the potential to develop it is. Good job

tqv5964 2020-10-09 15:07

Nice interpretation of the theme. Love the minimal and clean art style.

Like others mention, larger font for the tutorial. More enemy types for challenge since when you used to it, the game offer no more to play it. Yeah, the music should be in the main play scene, not the menu. You wasted it.

Anyway, congratz on your first entry. Really well done

justcamh 2020-10-09 16:01

Hey, I played your game on stream! Here's the vod if you wanna rewatch; https://www.twitch.tv/videos/765076622

Thanks for submitting your game!

tricky-fat-cat 2020-10-09 17:54

A pretty interesting concept of the game. It's easy to play and hard to master. However, in my opinion, the difficulty curve is pretty steep.

scidev 2020-10-09 20:23

Smart concept, the dissolve effects when things are destroyed is pretty clever. I think the shield looked a bit odd with the rest of the objects though and it is a bit buggy when you try to regen the shield, the response isn't immediate, but if it is supposed to be, maybe make some sort of animation to show it it regenerating.

duke 2020-10-09 21:45

Really really good! Especially considering that it's a compo entry. The concept was simple but very satisfying. especially trying to react to catch the powerups in a split second with a tiny whole in the shield :) really cool! The sound was rather basic, but helped a lot to keep the immersion up. The art was basic as well but the art direction itself helped to sell it. Good job! The only thing I could say to improve it, would be, that it was way to easy. I could've gone forever and it didn't seem to get any more difficult with time passing by. I played until 35k points since you said on stream that would unlock the good ending... but there wasn't really anthing special. Did I miss something?

All in all, very good entry. Good scope, rather ingenious game play loop and a good execution in general. Congrats!

javasaurus 2020-10-09 23:03

Heya! Thanks for submitting your game to my stream at [wwww.twitch.tv/drjavasaurus](www.twitch.tv/drjavasaurus). Great game, short and snappy, very efficient. It's finished, especially for a compo game. I found a great start to be just pointing down until something floats your way :D Only minor thing would be the missing in game-music, but it didn't really bother me all that much in the end

fabula-rasa 2020-10-09 23:41

A solid compo entry and a take on the theme that I haven't seen before. I like that. Simple but well-made. Shame you didn't keep the background music though the whole game and only played some in the main menu.

I agree with the sentiment expressed by some other commenters - tutorial should have a larger font. And you probably could just display lore at the beginning as a "cutscene" (just display it once, when the game is first run) and make your tutorial in few points - no need to be so verbose there.

The graphics is rather simple but informative, so it gets the job done

crashmusashi 2020-10-10 10:05

Really enjoyed your entry! I had a couple of very tense moments :) Great work and thanks for submitting!

joedev 2020-10-10 11:11

Niiice quite literally stuck in a loop! This was fun and very tense, the timings were brutal as I got further in! Much enjoyed :D

idenoh 2020-10-10 14:04

I really enjoyed the gameplay here, the controls were easy to pick up and within seconds I was a rock repelling pro! I felt like the pickups were infrequent enough to make it challenging but not so infrequent that I found myself with a sliver of a shield and no health at any given moment. I liked the simple graphics, it gave me early atari vibes with some modern day post processing flair. Overall it was a lot of fun!

flawed 2020-10-10 15:04

It was a fun little game, but there's some delay when the shield blocks are taken, which might cause meteors to enter :)

jamesor 2020-10-10 15:37

That was an interesting game. I kept wanting to shoot things but got the hang of it after a while. It was fun to play.

cedric86 2020-10-10 16:32

Very intressting and well executed concept. Good work!

gardosj 2020-10-10 18:42

Great work! The controls are intuitive and the asteroid visual/sound effects make the game rewarding to play (highscore was 29450)! I noticed that whenever I found myself with a full shield I could just face downwards and deflect all incoming projectiles without moving for a good while; allowing asteroids to come from all directions could prevent this camping strategy. Overall nicely done!

kaldrin 2020-10-10 21:34

Nice idea! It works pretty well, simple, and it's quite litterally the theme, stuck in the loop of your shield x)

Sounds are too repetitive though, they could have used some variation, they become annoying rather quickly. Graphic style is neat, not crazy but very well executed, me like!

I wanted to shoot things though, a little frustrating, and some phases were just waiting for the asteroids to come. I wouldn't replay it though

Also, work a little more on the presentation of your page maybe, make titles in higher font, bullet points, quicker elevator pitch, stuff like that ^^

Congrats for this entry !

jitspoe 2020-10-11 03:24

26610 on my first attempt. The variation of projectile speed makes things interesting, and sometimes my reflexes end up blocking powerups. Might want to ensure a faster min speed. I had a cluster of asteroids that was barely moving toward the end. What the game really needs is a narrator to make you want to punch your screen, though. ;)

arad-hamidsamiee 2020-10-11 04:52

Oh my... what a hard game Lol. I'm not good at playing these. Nice mechanics and models. good job

dumbdumb 2020-10-11 13:23

holy crap this game is soooo good . being a beginner , such games are a HUGE inspiration . have a great day !

antti-haavikko 2020-10-11 14:34

Aight, finally beat it! :sunglasses:

Screenshot 2020-10-11 at 17.05.04.png

The fastest asteroids and pickups were too much for my reflexes at least. I mean I were just on the edge of managing to block them but no way I got to actually decipher the color before that. I think it was quite a good move to not have the things spawn from top and bottom because then you'd have even less time to react. On the other hand it made half of the play time mind numbingly boring since you could just keep your cursor just above the ship and be completely safe from everything, only just keeping an eye out of pickups. Probably might have been better to just lock the aspect ratio to square and allow spawning on any edges. Obviously that would require either zooming back a bit or slowing down the projectiles.

The scoring is bit of a miss here. At its current state, it is quite pointless since it's almost like just a timer. And speaking of which, a timer to the rescue arrival would have been nice. And definitely could have made the difficulty ramp up towards the end to up the action just before the release. The scoring could be spiced up with a multiplier system. Could for example increase the multiplier on each destroyed asteroid and reset when getting hit. Maybe the timed reset of shield could reset the multiplier too so you'd want to manage your shield more manually. The come up with some scoring thing on powerup destroying too, kinda something like risk vs reward.

It was kinda weird how the powerups came closely togerher in groups of three. I mean it was kinda a good thing and kinda not. Grabbing a shield for example made it impossible for you to grab some health right afterwards and obviously wouldn't even need another shield. I do like the double edged sword thing you got going on in shield replenishing though. Kinda made you have to think and sometimes actually skip getting them when you had like 75% shield already in favour of maybe getting some health ones.

The look was pretty good! The color palette was mostly pleasant to look at (the asteroids felt a bit dirty looking compared to anything else). The destroying effects looked nice but would have just wanted to see a lot more. And they looked awkward when going fast speed and ending up inside (and under) the shield. Should have added the effect on the actual collision position instead of where the asteroid body would have ended up in. Giving the asteroids some size variation would be cool too and make it look less repetitive.

The shield filling visuals were kinda glitched too, it did like some weird 90 degree turn before actually going full. And I feel like the shield timer was completely pointless, the circle was already more than enough. The health bar could have also had either a frame/border or a background. Now it was quite hard to estimate how much health you actually had.

The sound effects weren't really anything to write home about. Kinda repetitive too because there was no variation. Especially with the lack of music. Why have the music play only on the menu scene? And the getting hit sound was very bland and seemed insignificant. Even though it should be the scariest thing in the game really! So the sound effect for it should pack a mean punch and be accompanied with some flashy visuals too.

Anyways, good job! And congrats on your first (and successful too) Ludum Dare entry!

kuviman 2020-10-11 14:35

Very nice entry for the first your game jam

wendel-scardua 2020-10-11 14:45

Cool arcade game, nice spin (pun intended) on the genre with the defense being the only attack :) (I'm bad at it, though, my high score was 21k)

invader 2020-10-11 15:01

Great game! Definitely one of the most innovative gameplays I've seen in this jam - that mechanic with controlling the shields is a nice twist from a traditional asteroid-like space shooters. Good job!

As for suggestions, I think allowing keyboard controls can bring more of the old-style arcade feel into it. The mouse just doesn't provide the same kind of feedback as mechanical keyboards most gamers have these days.

roikku 2020-10-11 16:53

Yeap the sound fx repetitiveness is the only thing bad about it :P but it's great fun otherwise!

Very good for a first entry!

neowedge 2020-10-11 19:25

I like the game, is classic and original at the same time. Maybe it could be better with keyboard control, as mouse is faster and easier. Music fits very good, and graphics works very well (the asteroid bounce is a little strange, but I like the desintegration effect). Great entry!

trexxak 2020-10-11 22:46

I love the intuitive, simple gameplay you went for <3 Every single piece of debris you defend against feels like a victory, and every piece you let through feels like immense failure. The cringe experienced when accidently blocking off useful upgrades does also just really feel organic (so you're always giving yourself the blame and not the game). Great entry, especially for a first, especially for a Compo!

anaferus 2020-10-11 22:50

It is addictive. Sometimes it seems like they know when to hit!Good idea! GjGJ.png

sharkwithlasers 2020-10-12 04:04

I really liked this mechanic! The difficulty ramp increases as the loop shrinks, and the combination of health packs and asteroids kept me on my toes. Very clean design!

My one nitpick is that there wasn't any pitch variation on the asteroid shielded sound effects. Having pitch variation helps diversify the sound. Here is a good example of how it helps: - https://youtu.be/pmSAG51BybY?t=746 (start at 12:26)

Overall, great work! Especially for a first jam! Looking forward to seeing what you make in the future!

vivoubos 2020-10-12 09:24

This is a really nice concept! Your idea is really good.

Maybe, it's a bit repetitive (it's an arcade game ^^) but it match completly with the theme!

Good job for this entry

honest-dan 2020-10-12 11:28

I enjoyed this! A simple mechanic, but well executed - and a good balance. The thing that protects you from harm also prevents you from getting survival based pickups. The more shield you lose, that harder it gets. Clean visuals too. I think I didn't expect the really slow moving items to disappear once they touched my shield, so maybe a disintegrate effect could have helped imply that as soon as they touch the shield. Also, as I mentioned on stream - audio for impacts could be pitch shifted randomly to help make the noise less irritating over time. Great effort!

mza 2020-10-12 18:28

Its very simple and gets addictive really quickly like those hypercasual mobile games. Great design. Great concept.

msiddeek 2020-10-13 04:35

I didn't survive long because I suck at these games, but your game hooked me enough that I tried many times. I still sucked, but nice concept and clean execution. Congrats!

seurimas 2020-10-13 05:08

Feels like this game was properly scoped for the compo and it shows with the polish you were able to get in! There were a few oddities I want to call attention to, which may have affected things in unexpected ways: it seems like asteroids only came from the sides, leaving a fairly effective strategy of pointing the nose downwards; the shield jumped back and forth a little while it was ticking down, not a gameplay bug but possibly some backend math creating a visible artifact.

darenn 2020-10-13 16:41

Very nice game, impressed it's your first LD! The idea is very cool and the gameplay is simple. I'm wondering if it would be better to have a squared screen so that obects can come from every directions (I think you tried to get more objects coming from the right and left right? That's a very good idea with this screen format). Great job and very polished changelog! :o

etrealjunior 2020-10-13 17:15

Very challenging game, simple mechanics and well executed, when I saw your profile I thought I was going to play a game in pixelart, but I was surprised I loved the effect of destroying asteroids, I would recommend doing an effect similar to crashing into the ship, congratulations on the game, a great hug.

coryru 2020-10-15 01:41

Simple mechanics and sleek graphic style. Not too shabby.

tayo 2020-10-15 05:01

Super solid game design. They say a design is finished if you can not take away from it. Your game is minimal, yet complete! The mechanics are easily understood.

Only thing missing is some form of tangible progress (just more points does not feel very rewarding).

Very nice entry.

supergamersgames 2020-10-15 20:03

There needs to be a bit more polish and I'd find different sounds, but on the design side of things it is a perfect entry and I'd play this on my phone. I'd recommend making an option to reverse controls so the opening is where you are looking looking and vice versa.

flying-basement-studios 2020-10-15 21:06

Very simple but fun game :), we played HTML5 version.

joleon 2020-10-16 13:57

Interesting take on a classic genre, pretty simple but pretty fun to play, at least for a little while.

I like the sound effects and menu music, but was missing some in-game music.

Strong suit is that it's so accessible and easy to control that it required zero tutorial.

Good job!

cagibi 2020-10-16 20:29

Nice gameplay in its simplicity! I agree with the lack of polish (and background music) but the existing effects are doing the job very well. This game has potential!

##Thank you!

Glad you guys enjoyed :) It's very uplifting as I want to continue my hobby and seeing that my work makes people happy and hooked cannot be more heartwarming and motivating! I have taken a lot of feedback from all of you and others so you can check my changelog request I've added! There will be more coming changelog requests and I will make a devlog out of it either on Twitch or YT if possible after LD ends :)

@n8dev Probably the font is one of the lower priority changes, but I will keep that in mind! As some of the people respond to pitch difference, I will definitely make it so! Thank you for checking out :)

@cakii23 Thank you! This is indeed my first 'completed' game. I have started learning unity by the end of 2019 :)

@games-by-tom Thank you :) I will be making a complete overhaul to the tutorial (more graphic-wise, less wall of text). You can check my Changelog request I edited in to this page!

@renge Thank you! I have a bit other plans regarding the shield, you can check my changelog request!

@eduardo-yukio Thank you for playing! Rankings is something I intend to add in the future. Possible next changelog request :)

@brorenata Thank you for playing and for the feedback! I have tossed some of the points you mentioned into changelog request I will be attempting to make after LD :)

@tricky-fat-cat Thanks! I may introduce more linear RNGesus spikes later on!

@scidev Thank you for playing and yes, I am going to completely overhaul the barrier system as the current one was proof-of-concept :)

@duke You almost made it to the end! I should have mentioned about the times I didn't display unfortunately... but I will introduce it in different game modes (arcade / survival) :) Thank you for playing and for feedback!

@kaldrin Noted and edited :) Thank you for playing and for feedback!

@jitspoe first you need a shotgun :D Thank you for the feedback!

@antti-haavikko OH my god that is a wall of feedback. There's a lot of improvements I decided to put in to the changelog request based on your feedback as well as the others. Definitely separate game modes (highscore arcade vs fleet survival timer), refactor RNG (every spawn is RNG with specific weight of % of spawning chance basically), different sizes of asteroids with different hit damage values, quite possibly other enemy variations (gas clouds, electromagnetic charges etc) as well as complete overhaul of shielding as it's clunky but it was basically a proof-of-concept. Thank you for insigthful feedback!

@sharkwithlasers OH MY GOD I need to watch more of those. Thank you so much for that piece of advice and thank you for playing and giving feedback! :)

@seurimas Thank you! I tried exactly to scope it down do Compo (gameplay.zip.rar.zip + simplicity). I will consider making changes to the shielding system and spawners :) Thank you again for playing and feedback!

@darenn Thank you! I will keep widescreen, but I will introduce better spawning system and overhaul to shield's mechanics to make it more approachable :)

ryan-paton 2020-10-20 09:07

Cool game, I managed to get to the end. My only gripe is that sometimes the bonuses come in too fast and my reflex is to block them

archgame 2020-10-22 01:56

I enjoyed the mechanic, a cool take on the theme, I wonder if there's a way to develop it into a schmup where you can control the ship movement, although this might take away from the simplicity of it.

thegreenworm 2020-10-26 12:59

This game is neat ! It would gain a lot from having a wider screen/being zoomed back a bunch to better anticipate incoming objects. Overall, a clean simple idea an good execution, gg !

rewzu 2020-10-26 21:41

You took the theme quite literally and it works great! Really amazing game. Could use some music and maybe a progressive difficulty. Also a bit of diversity would be nice.

pickens-inc 2020-10-27 00:09

A nice solid entry, and a very good attempt for your first LD and your first completed game.

The instructions were confusing, but despite the seemingly repeated requests for a bette tutorial it took me literal seconds to comprehend everything I had to do - avoid asteroids, collect powerups. There is beauty in how simple it is, though as we spoke about in stream the timer mechanic does throw into question the efficacy and irregularity of the difficulty curve.

Relatedly, the biggest flaw with the gameplay was certainly the randomness of the asteroid's appearance and the frequent appearance of impossible onslaughts of them simultaneously from all directions - this would certainly need to be fixed in future versions and may not be super easy, but once you have a syste mdown I think you'll find iterating on it much easier.

The menu music was nice and I kind of wisiehd it kept playing as we went through. The background was nice and I loved the glowiness to all of the sprites - it helps add character and a charm to the simple graphics and grants it a pleasing aesthetic. I think you could take more advantage of it if you extend the game.

But the again there is little more to say, your requested changelog clearly shows you've a clear handle on things and know where you're going from here. Best of luck with moving forwards with this and all of your other proejcts and congratulations for completing your first game.
