LD47 — Stuck in a loop

Fish Balls by Gao Ming 2020-10-06T02:49:14Z

I can see where this game was going, and I LOVE how the little fishies tails wiggle a bit. It's absolutely adorable. That being said, this game is *frustratingly* slow at the beginning. I think if you wanted to "balance" this game a bit better, you could make it so at first the fish are relatively easy to catch but not worth much, and only have the first 1 or 2 unlockable fish be affordable. Then, once you've got them hooked you make that third tier unlockable fish *juuuust* a bit grindier. And so on and so forth. Rather than having a wall right at the beginning that is tough to overcome.

Curly's Chase by aeveis 2020-10-05T03:36:59Z

I think the little cover art matches the pixel art so well- you can really see how it's represented in game. For whatever reason I kept trying to move the arrow keys as if it would turn from the head of the dragon, rather than based on the orientation of the map. This caused repeated bonks. I also think you may have a clipping issue? On my screen the flies counter says 4 / 1, and I'm assuming it means 4/10. The dialogue gave the characters just enough personality- I'm impressed with how much you got done in the short timeframe!

Ouroboros Paradox by TolMera 2020-10-06T03:45:58Z

What a crazy cool story for a game jam- pulling together so many different people! Nicely done. I liked the atmosphere- it's set right off the bat. That being said WOAH. The mouse sensitivity is *crazy* high. Also, I'd highly recommend lighting up the doorways or showing some sort of indicator- players like me are stoopid. ^^;; Audio was great and on point- the game's graphics matched the atmosphere really well. Nicely done!

Hamster Simulator by ruthiepee 2020-10-05T02:33:55Z

I like the little easter egg when you have the hamster in the wheel for too long, and the music is *perfect* for hamsters. The little gibberish he says when he's running is adorable, and the art style is consistent. It's hard for me to tell what clicking on the hay does- it's not as big of a change as moving to the wheel or water.

Escape the Loop by magnusfurcifer 2020-10-06T03:33:20Z

Dude that one ramp- that's brutal. The slide mechanic was really well implemented. It felt "cool" to complete a slide in time. Perhaps having the loop cleaner start off a bit slower and ramp up as the player collects keys would have been a good way to ramp up the difficulty? I also think having a little cleaning animation on the front side of the cleaner would have added to the "OH GOD GOTTA GET AWAY" aspect of it. Nice job!

Dungeon Simulator by Yeti Kid 2020-10-06T04:30:46Z

I like this idea! It's sort of like tower defense but where you're the bad guy/environment. That being said, the controls were a little wacky for me- I don't have a num pad, and when I use the arrow keys the browser moves. If I went to full screen it fixed the browser scrolling, but then when you went to restart it escaped out of full screen and I had to re-maximize it every play through. Also, the little towers seemed to function less predictably than I would expect? Maybe some sort of cooldown timer showing how long before they can shoot again would make it more clear? I loved the art- the palette, the sfx and music were great. Nicely done!

Ribbon by 100th_Coin 2020-10-06T04:41:11Z

My only complaint is that it was over so quickly. That was SO innovative. I loved how the music changed dynamically depending on what you were doing. Grabbing the knife and stabbing the orc got a giggle out of me, "*Okay, now you can pass.* LOL The art was adorable- and you mastered the theme. This is excellent!

a Damsel a Day by alec 2020-10-05T03:32:57Z

I love that the damsels font is different from the rest of the game, and the smiley face she gives off when she's saved is particularly charming. I'm a sucker for your art- even though its so simple, I feel like it would do well if you had it pick random assets from a tree array, random plants, random rocks, random terrain- could really keep it fresh if you'd had more time than 48 hours! I also think this would be a perfect game to implement a leaderboard in someday. Good work!

GOTO START; by simex 2020-10-06T02:35:11Z

It seems a little counterintuitive for the HP bar to fill up to 100% instead of drop down from 100%- but maybe this is some programmer joke I'm too lame to understand. The music/sound was really good though.

Loopy Boy by rex64 2020-10-06T04:09:39Z

This was a tricky thing to master! Being able to make changes on the go was interesting, but man, what an innovative little set of controls. The graphics were a little.. grey? Plain? Bland? But they were uniform and you could understand what was what so that was good!

Pico Arena by scottgoldsmith 2020-10-06T02:31:07Z

I'm not exactly sure how the controls work- perhaps some sort of screen that pops up by using "X" that explains how to fight a bit would help? It may be a limitation of pico-8, but in general the "combat" aspect of the game wasn't very clear. I liked the flavor text after each win/death though, and I didn't find any "bugs" per say, other than the characters vibrating intensely when they touch one another(maybe this is a *love* game).

Loop Jumper by Xacur 2020-10-06T03:42:11Z

This reminds me a lot of the Rocket Headquarters in Pokemon Red! Similar kind of puzzles going on. I feel like the music was a bit too "christmas-y" for my taste- it didn't seem to match the game. It also wasn't immediately clear that there was a store- maybe when you pick up your first few coins or lose your first heart you could have a speech bubble pop up with "Hm! I should buy more lives in the store..." with a hotkey to bring it up? Otherwise, the graphics were solid- nice and uniform, and the gameplay was straight forward!

DEMON LOOP by dinosire 2020-10-06T02:28:24Z

Nice job with this! I wish there had been a bit more variety in the floor / wall tiles so it isn't overwhelming. Also, potentially using a color ramp for your color palette can help keep things more uniform. That being said, I found it an innovative use of the "loop" theme- it's rather fun running around trying to "lasso" the demons! I also liked how as you destroy more demons you get more wands to utilize. Good stuff!

Shadow ▲○■ by Mountday 2020-10-05T02:39:34Z

The voxel graphics mixed with 2D sprites is really interesting- it makes them stand out against the world. I wish I could have rotated the camera somehow? Also, when I hit "spacebar" in combat the screen wigged out a bit. I noticed I have cards of some sort that I can switch between my monsters for? But I don't know if they do anything special. I'm impressed how much you got done in the limited time frame!

One Hit Wonder by Azemut 2020-10-06T04:14:54Z

This is so fun! Wow! I had to unlock everything. I will say when I tabbed away from the game for a sec(discord) and came back the sound was completely muted for the remainder of the round, but it came back when I hit encore. Also, I really want to send this game to my boyfriend because he'd LOVE it, but the jittering stage during the music would eff him up unfortunately(this is sort of an accessibility option that I know you probably didn't scope in, just unfortunate!)

The gameplay was straight forward, the graphics were easy to understand and uniform. The music was really well done! I sort of wish the main singer was a bit less hamstery...

Dragon Loop by JustusPan 2020-10-06T03:29:03Z

The gameplay loop got easy quite quickly, which is just a matter of balance, and I accidently clicked on a few options sometimes and wasn't sure if they actually went through or if I lost a day or not. That being said, this is pretty fun! I liked the variety, it was simple, easy to figure out(I immediately knew how to play and what to do). Good job!

WhileLoops by Ausstein 2020-10-06T02:40:04Z

This was hilarious- I love the loading screen text. It perfectly coincides with how I felt during the game jam. Heh! What a fun little bit of core gameplay. The sounds were dead on too. It was simple, but really well done! NICE! A small suggestion, I think my boyfriend would love this game, but that color changing background would eff him up- maybe make a smol accessibility option that mutes the colors or does some other.. distracting thing?

Re-Race by Stefan0198 2020-10-06T03:04:25Z

WOW. This game fits a perfect vaporwave a e s t h e t i c. I loved the audio and visuals, in fact, if this game was just a chill "drive through vaporwave landscapes vibing to sick beats" I would actually purchase it at the $20 mark. One thing to note is I didn't see any sort of indicator for when you're going the "wrong way"? Either way, excellent job with the mood and graphics!

I think I did get a visual bug when I flipped my car(woops) where the wheels did a weird graphical shudder for a bit.

VPR.WAV by Boodle 2020-10-05T03:49:26Z

I like the addition of what I'm going to call "grain" in the background- I like the vaporwave aesthetic at lot here. Obviously you didn't get a chance to implement a lot of things, but the basic scene is there! Graphics wise, perhaps you could make it so the hue shifts a bit over time to give it more variation?

Loop City by Fupi 2020-10-06T02:54:25Z

This is a really cute and innovative idea. The fact that there's so much to do in such a small space is really crazy to me. Good job creating so much content in such a little time! One thing that frustrated me is I think I accidently threw away my first wheat seeds that I bought because I didn't understand picking up a different item would get rid of them? Or... I just didn't find the inventory or something. Anyway, good work!

Space Wrangler by AmbaDev 2020-10-06T05:28:06Z

Great work on the cover art/game icon. Once inside the game the art translated well to the pixel style. I liked the time taken to do a nice(dainty) walk animation, and the backgrounds were worth running around. Pretty simple gameplay that was straightforward and easy to pick up- once you get the hang of clicking once to cast and once to capture it became a bit easier. Nicely done!

Chaser of Dawn by Yolwoocle 2020-10-05T05:21:48Z

This is a WHOLE game. Holy crap! I just beat it. I'm not sure if this is a limitation of PICO-8 or not, but my character was able to walk below the screen, which made for some panicky movements. Other than that- fantastic. The art is uniform, the gameplay is straightforward, it's got the whole loop concept in there with the planet rotating and walking over it again and again. This is one of the best I've played so far! I think your description is killing you- this game would do SO well to have some GIFs in your description, and maybe some formatting.

Do as I say, or we'll have to start again by sanjuro 2020-10-05T03:43:39Z

My main suggestion would be to add some sort of progress indicator(ideally one that doesn't break the mood, maybe some sort of "alright just a few more questions" narrative)- I have no idea if I'm at the end of the game or not. Still, it had me hooked! I kept trying over and over again- like a spooky game of memory.

Work Sleep Repeat by Manspider 2020-10-06T03:21:59Z

I did wish there had been some sort of punishment for ignoring the big screen. The atmosphere was perfect though. This is the same way I interpreted the "stuck in a loop" concept.

Danger Beat by rhoff95 2020-10-06T05:22:34Z

I *hate*(read: suck at) bullet hells. Especially ones where the reward is cool sounding music. I wish I was better at this game because I really want to hear the whole vibin beat, but I found it gets really... difficult to avoid all the bullet spray as you go on- which makes sense. It's a bullet hell. Graphics were good(consistent). And I *LOVED* the fact that you can turn of screen shake. That's huge from an accessibility standpoint. Good work!

Loopfield by MikoziQ 2020-10-06T05:40:15Z

At first I wasn't sure what the little colored triangles would do, but I knew right off the bat that they were "good" and the red was "bad". Nice work there! I did run into a weird... "feature" where if you pressed escape while on the main homepage some text overwrites the "quit" button.

Bjorn to Dance by Tomh 2020-10-06T05:19:04Z

Hahah I love the pun! It was easy to pick this up and get the hang of it with little instruction- that's good. I found myself wishing there was a bit more music to go along with it- but I understand that this is a game jam! Heh. Nicely done.

Shifting Edge by DaFluffyPotato 2020-10-06T02:58:50Z

This is one angry gardener. I really enjoy the art style here. I think the audio was sort of... out of place for me? It was "spookier" a vibe than I think the game needed. It wasn't distracting or too loud or anything though, so that's good.

Millenniloop by nerdytopic 2020-10-05T03:56:29Z

@magnusfurcifer I've had a couple people mention this issue- one friend said refreshing the game made it figure itself out? I'm not sure if that worked for you. Thank you for playing!

oh shit i'm dreaming again. by Smarto Club 2020-10-06T02:21:46Z

I ran into a bug that prevented me from continuing- no matter which option I select here it doesn't actually do anything- and I can't back out of the option menu, effectively freezing my game. bug.png

That being said: Wow! Good use of the theme, the art is uniform and the actual closeup of the face is REALLY great. The flavor text on everything was humorous and the overall tone was really well setup.

SORO BORO by nethead 2020-10-06T05:35:03Z

Sadly I had an issue where no matter what keys I pressed nothing happened, so I didn't get to get past the first level. But I did refresh a few times, and from what I can see the music is *excellent* and I LOVE the art. Especially how you outlined the main objects that are important with a white outline. Nicely done!

Collateral Damage by Michael Parrish 2020-10-06T05:31:35Z

This was quite easy to pick up and understand right off the bat, and definitely checks the "stuck in a loop" checkbox. The graphics are super simple, but they all stand out from one another and tell you exactly what they are without having to guess. This is absolutely solid!

you did your best, didn't you by notsomecats 2020-10-06T02:44:23Z

I'm not sure if I'm just dumb or if I'm somehow bugged, but I am finding this really difficult to play. Maybe it's just a bit too fast for me? A wee bit more instructions on what to do would be super helpful. My little "bar" at the bottom of the screen runs out within 1 second of loading into the game.

you did your best, didn't you by notsomecats 2020-10-06T04:35:00Z

@notsomecats That TOTALLY makes sense. When I was making my game I remember the Youtube videos mentioning that being a problem. Glad you figured it out! Heh. (I love your art style by the way!)

Unfinished by glao 2020-10-06T03:34:58Z

It's nice to see that even though you didn't finish your own game you're out there supporting other games by leaving ratings. ^^ Thank you!

Lup by Ame1337 2020-10-06T04:47:58Z

Heh, I get it. Took me a second. But I got it. It is a loop, I'll give you that. You're thinkin outside the box and I respect that.

Quota by mrosegreen 2020-10-06T04:21:29Z

Reminds me of my Mavis Beacon lessons from long ago- my only complaint is that the font you use for the text you're supposed to copy doesn't match the font on the typewriter, and I couldn't zoom in/resize the window on it to see that the first line included a comma- not a period. A satisfying clickety clack of the typerwriter would have been a nice addition too.
