I recorded some (winning) gameplay footage which I'll be publishing tomorrow. I'll update this comment with a link when it goes live. Good luck surviving all! :)

Video is live!: https://youtu.be/x8bA_1_fLEk

Winter Survival gameplay starts at 12:20. The first game is "Raiders of the lost Bark" which I thought was a pretty neat game. Links in description for anoyone interested.

Interesting idea. I found it very hard to pick up objects (e.g. rocks, sticks). I could grab berries just by clicking on the bush, but I could only occasionally pick up the other tool objects. It would have been nice maybe to have some better sense of direction than just the footprints, although that was a nice touch. It wasn't entirely clear that decreasing "hunger" was bad, although once I started trading health for hunger it became more clear. Nice work...

tohubohu 2019-10-08 04:53

Played through a few times. I like that the world is randomized each time. I had trouble picking up items like sticks and stones, clicked on them a lot and eventually I would pick them up, not sure why. Didn't beat the game, but I did manage to make an axe before I froze to death! I liked the footprints in the snow... but they weren't a good way for me to find my way home. Must have gotten lost in the snowfall. Congrats on publishing the game!

kevinworkman 2019-10-08 04:56

Like dob said, I couldn't figure out how to pick up the sticks, and when I tried to chop down a tree it decreased my health. Maybe a tutorial or an intro level would help? But overall this felt pretty complete, and the footprints were a nice touch. Also I enjoyed the music so much that I just let it play for a while!

sharkwithlasers 2019-10-08 05:11

Congrats on making the game! The game fits well with the theme and I like the sound effects that you made! Also didn't know about Wolfram Tones, definitely going to experiment with that tool in the future.

Like the others, I also had trouble picking up items, so I didn't survive for too long.

Some ideas I have: - It seems like there isn't any downside to holding the sprint button, so perhaps it should be the default speed (or removed)? - To get a better sense of direction (especially back to the initial fireplace), perhaps the footprints could have been persisted? I think that would be an interesting way of figuring out where you in the world.

Once again, congrats and nice work!

oxrock 2019-10-08 07:11

@sharkwithlasers your hunger actually depletes at double the rate while sprinting. It's probably hard to notice though.

oxrock 2019-10-08 08:31

@dob @tohubohu Sorry about the item pickup problem. I think the player's collection radius collider was blocking raycasts and thus interfering with picking up objects. He should hopefully now be ignored by raycasts and clicking functionality should now be.... functional ;p Thanks for playing, sorry about that annoying bug.

@kevinworkman I am of the opinion that punching trees hoping for logs would probably be quite painful. Thankfully axes for tree chopping as well as pickaxes for boulder smashing can both be made for 3x sticks and 3x stones. Pressing "B" should open the build menu.

Thank you all for your feedback. It's much appreciated :)

Took quite a few attempts, but I finally survived! It was a fun little game, nice job!

I love survival games, I think most people thought survival games were hard, but a few actually pulled through, you me and a few other guys made survival games, props.to you for making such an awesome game

bar0net 2019-10-09 01:20

It's an intereasting approach and it's fun.

I had the constant sensation of not knowing where I was or if there were anything of interest in the direction I was going. I your objective was to convey "being lost", it's quite effective, but I would have prefered to have some way oforienting myself.

oxrock 2019-10-09 17:40

@bar0net yeah, the whole premise is that you're lost in the woods, but I personally found that lost feeling quite annoying to deal with as well. Sometimes I forget that the point is to have fun and I get stuck fixing mechanics to suit the narrative I've made up or to make things more realistic. I think I'll update the game to let footprints be permanent after the rating period is finished.

lesinvisible 2019-10-09 18:07

Yeah, just my five cents on the theme of map absence. Gets really annoying but I kinda can understand that this is part of a concept. Despite the fact that I'm not a big fan of survival game, this look solid enough.

marcin-j 2019-10-09 18:26

The long dark is one of my favorite games so I see what you were going for. A pretty playable prototype with programmer graphics, good job :D

- Some pixel details in the snow would do wonders, one color background makes it look quite boring. - for a tree I'd recommend collision to be smaller so the player walks into it, like this maybe 1.png

nicknameless 2019-10-10 02:15

Nice job creating the systems! It's not easy to make a survival game, and I didn't experience any bugs while playing (except for once where it seemed like I was not able to pick up a rock). I did find the game to be a little too punishing. Items feel too far away from each other, and it seemed impossible to find everything I need before I would die my slow death. The sting of that death was lessened by the funny sound effects, though! I liked the "ouch"m and the groans my character would make when he crafted something, like he can know nothing but hardship.

theomaniacal 2019-10-10 02:24

Nice work! I definitely felt lost, which was clearly what you were hoping the player to experience. At times, this feeling was enjoyable (challenge of needing to stay oriented to the fire), but at other times I would just get completely disoriented to where I would always die from lack of warmth. I didn't realize that berries regrew on bushes so quickly, so I kept thinking I was visiting new areas every time I saw berries - hence me getting lost.

yonman 2019-10-10 15:27

Good game! It represents very good the theme and it is also fun, interesting and the SFX fit exactly to what's happening. Very good job!

godsboss 2019-10-12 08:14

Does the fire burn out after some time? First time I could not find the fire at the starting place I thought I just went into the wrong direction, but the second time I was pretty sure it should have been there.

I had no problems picking up berries, stones or sticks, but could not figure out how to use the pickaxe after putting it into my hand (with 'E').

oxrock 2019-10-14 09:05

@godsboss The campfire burns out after a set time. You'll have to gather the resources to create at least 1 to survive long enough to win. As for the pickaxe, it should simply allow you to mine stone from the giant boulders as long as it's your active tool.
