LD45 — Start with nothing

ZERMATT: ZERO by FireSlash 2019-10-09T07:36:27Z

Really liked the atmosphere, and the narrative was good too. How do you not have a humor rating option? Those look actions in the hallways were great! I tried a couple of playthroughs but didn't get too far before getting eaten. I set a trap in a room and the monster still got me. :( Well done though! Congrats on the submission.

World Collector by Joe Williamson 2019-10-11T09:31:02Z

Saw the YouTube video posted by a previous commenter. Immediately had to download it and try it out. Five stars across the board. You nailed it.

Edit: @joe-williamson Just a heads up that your (personal?) website is throwing an SEC_ERROR_EXPIRED_CERTIFICATE error. Looks like the Lets Encrypt certificate expired 9 Oct 2019.

Starting From Nothing by sorlok 2019-10-12T02:37:14Z

I liked the gameplay. Reminded me of games like Puzzle Bobble or Bust A Move. I felt like the narrative added another dimension to the gameplay, as if each "bubble" were an event in their life or some stress building up, and it made me want to succeed for more than just getting past the level. A difficult subject that is rarely (if ever) discussed in games and I think it was well done.

Armistice by frenchie 2019-10-08T05:09:16Z

Great concept! I was super confused at first though, because it said "press Space to shoot" and my spacebar received some unkindness from me. Thought maybe there was a bug or something, and after several unsuccessful ship configurations, I was about to quit, but that last configuration was the right one. Got through several missions after that. There's a lot of potential here beyond LD45! Well done.

incandescence by drtizzle 2019-10-09T20:07:19Z

Great job synchronizing the visual effects with the audio. I liked the atmosphere quite a bit. Wished that I could have made the car go faster, but still enjoyed the experience. Got 11 orbs by the end of it. Well done!

Inky escape by egos 2019-10-09T09:37:41Z

Great concept! Using the keyboard I got to level 13. I was initially confused because I thought you had to press the levels the number of times that appeared along side the letters. Ex: I thought 3B meant you needed to press B three times. Figured it out fairly quickly though. I like the mechanics quite a bit! A good balance between entering the right combo fast enough while avoiding the projectiles. Well done!

A Little Light Above by Roberto Romao 2019-10-08T06:09:14Z

This was fun. I can't resist a good platformer. I'm not sure how far I got, but I did eventually feel stuck. Found a parchment message from the High Cleric to Master and that was the last new one that I got to. Had about 15/15/20 for stats. The artwork was great! If you did all of that and programmed the game in this short period of time, I'm impressed. In any case, congrats on the submission.

#000000 by kevinworkman 2019-10-17T06:28:38Z

Fun idea masterfully executed. Congrats on the submission and thanks for sharing your idea with us.

HEI$T by pataya 2019-10-08T07:51:43Z

The game is easier to read (on WebGL) when it is made fullscreen. I enjoyed your take on the clicker genre, really liked the excitement and action as I furiously clicked to make my bank account grow. Really nice graphics and icons too. One bug worth looking at is that, at least in the WebGL build, the camera position starts moving toward the building the more you click on it. At this point, I can't see my crew members or the van. Attached a screenshot. Great game, lots of fun, would play more!

Word Crush by lunarDust 2019-10-11T07:57:31Z

Fun concept. I like that it's a multilayered puzzle in terms of both the word matching and movement. I can definitely see the potential! Well done, and congrats on the submission!

Words From Nothing by NekuSoul 2019-10-08T10:10:16Z

Hey, that's pretty cool! Must be a fairly efficient lookup to generate these words so quickly. Well done! I'll admit, I still haven't found everything, but I did find "thelitises", and then I had to look up the definition... LOL. Cheers on taking this theme in the same general direction, and congrats on the submission!

Winter Survival by oxrock 2019-10-08T04:53:02Z

Played through a few times. I like that the world is randomized each time. I had trouble picking up items like sticks and stones, clicked on them a lot and eventually I would pick them up, not sure why. Didn't beat the game, but I did manage to make an axe before I froze to death! I liked the footprints in the snow... but they weren't a good way for me to find my way home. Must have gotten lost in the snowfall. Congrats on publishing the game!

The Song of Calirum by Blizary 2019-10-09T08:04:11Z

This is excellent. The artwork is top-notch and if y'all did the music as well then it's perfect. If not, still a good choice! I did discover a bug though... you could click on a card multiple times and just load up your inventory. Granted, that kinda put me in a bad spot when I found the path to enlightenment, and ultimately I ended up losing, but I'd definitely play it again. Great job!

Veni, Vidi, Upgradici by Kornel 2019-10-08T08:09:40Z

WOW! This was awesome. I started with the audio and thought it was good, splitting the audio like that. Then I started upgrading the weapons, thinking that I might as well keep it easy. Then I upgraded the graphics and was like WHAAAAAAT!? Absolutely fantastic work! You have already upgraded EVERYTHING.

Deer Game by kantieno 2019-10-08T09:43:09Z

The personality test was an interesting start. Nice graphics, very consistent throughout. Would be nice to revive instead of restart when you die, but I guess that just opens up the opportunity to try different guardian types. Congrats on the submission!

First, you get the potatoes by Kodiqi 2019-10-08T05:53:55Z

Great intro text, gotta have respect for those root vegetables. This was fun, I spent way too much time on it and I could probably keep going because my brain just wants bigger numbers. Got a 3x multiplier on level 1 and was getting close to my first level 2... I might just keep this open in the background... well done (or the potato equivalent... smashing, I guess), and congrats on the submission!

Edit: I'm back from the future. I did indeed keep this open in the background. I wish that the prestige worked a bit differently. It feels a bit like a punishment rather than progression when you move up a level, because the earning rate gets reset. But, in the long run, it does appear to pay off!

Small Mouse, BIG SHOES! by UnitedFailures 2019-10-09T07:28:16Z

Well, that was an experience. Congrats on the submission.

WHILE (TRUE) { JAM(); } by cybersoftuk 2019-10-11T08:21:37Z

Great concept! You managed to make me feel stressed out all over again as soon as that clock started. Enjoyed this quite a bit, though that clock was going waaaay too fast! But I guess that's the point :D

ØJE by Gaming Night 2019-10-09T09:56:26Z

Love the art style! The controls felt nice and responsive. Gameplay was fun, but there were certain areas that I just couldn't navigate through once I had the red and blue obstacles unlocked. Overall, a really cool submission. Well done!

Merge 'em Wars by Call_me_Nutty 2019-10-13T19:22:11Z

This was a fun game to play. I won 5:2. Getting the DX card felt like an accomplishment, but it also seemed like merging cards had the tradeoff of losing a bit of health and attack power for speed. Must have been a lot of fun to make! Congrats on the submission.

Nothing by Spiced Pigeon 2019-10-08T09:02:18Z

Neat idea. I like the crowdsourced content and ownership of discoveries. I wish that the icon painter started out with a transparent background. Overall, cool concept. Congrats on the submission!

The Experience by Cromach 2019-10-08T08:32:30Z

Interesting concept. I like the hand as the cursor and the curious nature of things in the game. As @human-writes-code said, it's quirky! So the red people, I get their role, and I seemed to "sacrifice" the yellow people to build stuff, but once the blue people carried the hammer to the start location, do they do anything else? Can I build anywhere else? I saw three "vacancies" to build on, and I built the blue option twice. Anyway, interesting concept.

Time Shelter by Max S. 2019-10-11T08:08:37Z

I liked the exploration aspect, and the hand-drawn art assets were as good as anything else for conveying their meaning and intent. Congratulations on the submission!

There is nothing here by konomizure 2019-10-08T06:35:34Z

I really liked the atmosphere of this game, the font choices, and the idea that you were collecting RGB bits of color to build things in the game universe. I ended up buying the wallpaper, and I could definitely see this game being even cooler with more development time. Understandably, given the time constraints, it was cut short, but I would play a longer version of this (hopefully with the ability to auto-click at some point... hahah). Congratulations on the submission!

Draft & Doodle by DrEvilBrain 2019-10-13T06:30:42Z

I used random.org's number generator to roll some "dice" for me. Rolled a 20 and an 89. I'm not an artist, but I tried Paint and then Adobe Illustrator, with five minutes for each attempt, to see if I could draw a "drone" (LOL nope).

20_89.png

20_89_2.png

I like the concept, and enjoyed the fonts and clean presentation of your rulebook. Including a simple random number generator and having it present the results from the roll table would have been a nice addition. Still, this is a solid foundation. Congrats on the submission!

Mishka's Beauty Salon by toad 2019-10-08T06:18:38Z

I was looking forward to playing through more of this, because it's not the kind of game I'd normally go after. When I first loaded it, I'll admit that I was a bit stunned by the graphics. It looks like papercraft or some other handmade materials. Really cool. I clicked on a bunch of items in the house and when I went to put on her makeup, it all said "unimplemented" or "not unlocked". I tried playing twice with the same results... I might be missing just a single step here, but alas. Anyway, congrats on the submission!

Scribble from Scratch by Tobias Maushammer 2019-10-08T07:04:30Z

I love this. I was excited to play your game when I saw you posting during the development period, and I'm glad it was built for WebGL. The theme is well done and consistent throughout, the graphics are really enjoyable, and the gameplay is just a lot of fun. Fantastic submission!

Tiny Reactor by coffeecup.winner 2019-10-08T07:40:53Z

I got a bit carried away with some of these setups, and I made it to the fourth item. Not gonna spoil it, because you have a nice and easy to use "save/restore" system built in. Really liked the intro story here too, nice primer. Could play this one a lot more, well done!

Broken Broom Adventure! by RubixNoob13 2019-10-12T02:47:42Z

I ran the game once but despite what I thought was a methodical search from room to room I never found the "exit" or an obvious end. So I thought maybe there was a small chance that the procgen failed and decided to reload the game. Now, however, the player shows a blank screen when I attempt to run it (it shows a loading bar that never fills, and doesn't show the purple "Generating Map..." screen from before. Looking in my web browser's (Firefox) console, I see an "uncaught exception: abort(101)" error.

Edit: Now it's decided to work again. Will give it another shot.

Okay, I think I've found the 2x2 gray box that marks the potential end or exit. I like the graphics and the controls are pretty smooth, though waiting for that extra bit of hover to get to the third tile up takes a little too long IMO. Implementing procedural generation was definitely a plus! The map is pretty large, but maybe with additional features it wouldn't seem so. Congrats on the submission!

Meowlediction by Inferture 2019-10-09T07:01:01Z

I like that you built this with mobile devices in mind, but still made a build for WebGL. I enjoyed the swipe mechanic... haven't played Reigns, but if I ever do I guess I can say it reminds me of Meowlediction! To be honest, I didn't really pay attention to the life meter, not sure if that mattered at all. Maybe there are more choices that affect it? Not sure... I played through twice and seemed to do just fine. I do like the "choose your own adventure" aspect of the narrative though. Congrats on the submission!

Trash Can Adventures by t1a2z 2019-10-09T09:44:34Z

Fun concept, I like that catching the explosives does more than just make you lose points. The physics really made this challenging because things would just fly out if you moved too fast. The fact that you preserved the high score was a nice touch. Highest I got to was 235.

UNPROTECTED HEX by Quackqack 2019-10-08T09:50:47Z

Nice name :) This was a lot of fun to play! I'm pretty sure I got wrecked by the bandit leader. My ship was a monstrosity. Would definitely play again!

Nothing is my car ! by T-Bo 2019-10-08T08:17:30Z

Cute theme - gameplay is easy to pick up, pieces of the car a little less so. :) Congratulations on the submission!

Nothing is my car ! by T-Bo 2019-10-17T14:48:11Z

You should have a separate link for your post-jam modified game. Right now you just have the one link which points to a new version with the checklist, which was not in the version I played last week.

Split or Steal by Monish Vyas 2019-10-08T06:28:23Z

I enjoyed the implementation of the prisoner's dilemma. The graphics were great, and I enjoyed the humor at the end of the game. Wished there was a bit more interaction or something to do with the oxygen, as there wasn't any apparent value as a player in losing or gaining it. Overall, a nice looking submission, congratulations on completing it on time!

More Decor by mapleglaze 2019-10-09T06:52:17Z

Neat idea. I was stuck at 23 for a while but I finally made it - my high score was 28! I enjoyed the theme, but even without the furniture I still think there's a lot of potential here, maybe more so. Congrats on the submission!

The Glowing Adventure by Clickbait 2019-10-09T07:09:50Z

It was short but I'm glad that it didn't totally reset when I died. One thing I noticed is that for the WebGL build, in Unlimited Mode you can't see the "score" unless you have it set to fullscreen (at least for me). Congrats on the submission!

Stress reaction by hisa 2019-10-08T05:27:39Z

The mood is spot on! I somehow managed to make it outside, but I didn't find anyone else... I wonder if they are okay? Might try playing again to see if I can find them. I like the hand-drawn cutscenes and icons, and the voiceovers were really enjoyable! Having this in two languages as well... yeah, going to have to play it again, this time in Russian. Great job!

Edit: Played again in the Russian mode. There's an advantage to playing multiple times since it seems like the house and things are in the same places. However, for what it's worth, I think there's a bug when you attempt to flee from an encounter. This didn't happen in the ENG version, just the RUS version. When I tried to flee, I was transported back to the starting location.

Life Starts With Nothing by NoobDev 2019-10-08T09:59:23Z

I think I won? Enemies stopped spawning. I can still move around the room though. I came out ahead with $1460 though, so not bad for the time I put in! Honestly, the intro text was kind of rough, especially with the visual effect (post-processing?) that was used to bend the image. It cut off some of the text, but I got the general idea. But the gameplay was where it was at! Solid foundation, could add on quite a bit from here. Congrats on the submission!

ghosts with guns by very high ping 2019-10-09T09:27:14Z

After several game restarts, I came back here to read the important info about how to move your character. I like the graphics, and my favorite weapon is probably the rubber duckie wand. The ability to set the key bindings at the beginning was a nice feature. Movement can be tricky when using the cursor because the character can be stuck in a corner and you can't aim outside of that, but some weapons allow you to move forward rather than by recoil, so that helped. Got my green and red opponents to negative health. With more time, I could see this being a lot of fun. Congrats on the submission!

Who cares if it's buggy, just ship it! by ItsNotAGoodTime 2019-10-08T05:19:40Z

The artwork drew me in, and I was excited to see that it was a WebGL build. The dialogue was fun, but I was hoping for a bit more interaction. Still, enjoyed the humor, and am wondering what would have happened if I didn't pick up enough bugs... congrats on the submission!

Clothes On My Back, Things In The Sack by MaxyMax 2019-10-09T07:50:47Z

Fun concept, very challenging gameplay though! I wish the character had a bit less inertia when you stop moving, but I'm glad that the game doesn't send you back to the first level if you get caught in a later level. Enjoyed the audio as well. Congrats on the submission!

Letterout by tohubohu 2019-10-09T08:41:55Z

@kodiqi Thanks for the feedback. I agree with all of your comments. Especially the Words With Friends bit! Hahah.

@khorm Thanks for the heads up about the screen resolution issue. It was designed with a 16:9 screen in mind and I tried to make it small enough to be usable by a lot of different screen sizes, but I'll keep that in mind if I continue to work with this code and concept.

Letterout by tohubohu 2019-10-11T07:52:22Z

@svipal Thanks for the feedback. Agreed with everyone on the SFX - the audio was a last minute add, and for someone who thinks that game audio can have a transformative impact, it hurt a bit to ignore.

@scalliondelight Thanks! Yeah, the initial concept I posted about in the beginning included a "spellbook" because spelling... spells... was gonna have currency and all this other stuff, but getting the basics down was enough of a challenge! I'm glad I got rid of the timer though.

@joel-davis Yes! More juice for sure. I wanted those bonus tiles to feel good to get, and make all the flashy things. Generating art assets and animation is not a strength of mine though, it probably would have taken way more time to get it right than I had to spare.

@frenchie The idea that you can score off of your previous plays was intentional (similar to Scrabble), though you're right that it does incentivize a bit of a hack for some extra points. One of the things I wanted to do was add a "length" bonus for playing longer words, but I wanted some of the aforementioned juice for that and just left it out of this version. What I didn't intend and I'm glad you caught is that you can get the tile bonuses multiple times! I'll have to fix that, but not in this version... keeping the bugs and all from what I submitted for the LD45 timeframe. As far as restarting or something, yeah, would agree, and have ideas for a couple different game modes if I proceed with this concept.

@raomer The game might be fairly easy to localize for (some) other languages. It reads the valid word list from a text file. The letters are just based on a hardcoded range in a character set, but converting that to a separate file along with their values (based on frequency of use in that language) would definitely be doable!

I appreciate everyone taking the time to play, rate, and comment on this game. Thank you all!

Letterout by tohubohu 2019-10-11T10:04:31Z

@cybersoftuk Thank you. Nope, you didn't miss anything. This version doesn't have a feature to restart a level.

@dib Thanks! Yeah, as @geoff-nagy wondered, the tiles are distributed randomly from a set pool of letters, with some letters appearing more than others (e.g. there are two Zs, three Bs, eight Os, and so on)... there isn't an algorithm looking for an optimal play. It looks like you won the coin toss on getting a ton of vowels though!

Letterout by tohubohu 2019-10-11T11:04:26Z

@0x53ee71ebe11e Hm. I’ll look into that. My first guess is that “ATAG” wasn’t in the wordlist but “TS” is (for whatever reason... an abbreviation for Tosyl or Tennessine perhaps). The open source wordlist I point to has about 370k entries, some of which would make a traditional Scrabble player cringe. Not my favorite, but it was available. Will take a look though. Thanks!

Edit: Confirmed that "TS" and "AMAR" are both in the wordlist and "ATAG" is not, which explains the issue you experienced. Still agree that it doesn't really make much sense though from an "allowed words" perspective. Future iterations, if there are any, will have a cleaner wordlist.

Cult War by Ksandr7 2019-10-09T08:36:27Z

Made it to Surpreme Lord! Simple mechanic, but still fun. Was this networked play or were those AI agents? Seemed like it could have been either. Ran into a few bugs along the way (the one where I get as large as the map almost instantly worked well enough for me though), but nice job overall!

Stray by NikolaiM 2019-10-11T08:41:40Z

Interesting concept, but one thing to watch out for is the way I played... I was able to play the game without reading any of the text. I just clicked on the buttons that were enabled and they were always the correct choice, so I got to the dark room probably in less than a minute of gameplay. Solid progression though. Congrats on the submission!

Nothing Found a Ludum Dare 45 game by despdair 2019-10-09T07:19:34Z

Agree with everyone else, the mouse sensitivity was a bit rough. However, I think I made it to the end? I got in to the locked room upstairs and found all five memories there, and then a window came up that gave me a sensitivity slider (finally! lol) and a "Close Game" button. Didn't know how to close that window so I clicked the button. Anyway, if you made those 3D models, you did a great job! Congrats on the submission.

Chasing Light by Lychee 2019-10-09T07:43:26Z

Really like the graphics here, and the audio has a nice quality and consistency to it. The gameplay was fairly simple but still enjoyable enough, definitely a lot of potential to build it out more if you wanted to. Got up to 2071 points on the first try, less so on the second. :P Congrats on the submission!

Kebab Stand by DrGrognak 2019-10-09T09:15:33Z

Simple game, but enjoyable. I liked the balance between skewering correctly for pay and trying to manage multiple customers. Didn't reach $100 but I got close! Congrats on the submission!

Learning the Human by Savvy Community 2019-10-11T08:59:27Z

Well done! I like the concept, although as a player it seemed like a brute-force approach of clicking every icon (often starting with the newest) was the only way to go. Nice graphics, though I'm sure it helps to have an experienced team and a library of assets. Still, cool concept and definitely room for more.

Cascade by Goldenglade 2019-10-11T08:30:30Z

Fantastic job! Nothing bad to say about this other than it was too short, but that's just because I wanted more. Finished in 296 seconds the first time (Balanced Mode), 281 on Glass (3h/5s). Well done!
