This game was so much fun!! I absolutely loved the art direction and the music, it really helped to set the mood. It made me feel like an anime ninja cat! Very creative take and effective design, the only issue I had was the mouse was able to leave the screen when on fullscreen, causing me to lose track of the mouse and accidentally click outside of the bounds, making the screen go black. The controls were very snappy and it had just the right amount of juice! Overall great entry!

jeremy-ryan 2022-04-04 12:19

@plixel Thanks for playing! Sorry to hear about the full screen issue --- it wasn't a problem on the computer I used for development. What's your monitor's resolution?

holyblackcat 2022-04-04 12:41

Really dig the style. The game is quite unforgiving, I've had 4.4 miles remaining on my best run, and had enough. :P

The sound didn't work for me, possibly because I'm using linux+wine.

alchemic 2022-04-05 06:52

This is so good! The artwork is amazing, the sunset background and rewind animation are 10/10. The gameplay is fluid and I love how the kunai feel to throw, they have some real heft to them.

Got to about 10 miles left, and couldn't handle that many enemies.

My only two complaints are that I don't like W as jump (would much prefer spacebar), and the enemy warning indicators disappear too soon before the enemy actually spawns. Sometimes the indicator would disappear, and an enemy would then appear, but the warning was actually for another enemy that comes a half second later and wrecks me.

poopgames 2022-04-06 00:43

Sick mechanic making the player pickup their thrown weapons. One of the juicier games I have played and it feels quite nice overall. The player movement is a bit too fast and chaotic for my liking however. The soundtrack is amazing.

damakuno 2022-04-06 00:43

Man this game is so cool, the art and animations look really polished, the camera effects just makes the game feel really good to play, the controls are very intuitive and makes the game fun as heck, and it's a good challenging game as well, movement in the game feels good and is really fun, overall, a really solid game for a compo entry! Absolutely amazing work! The soundtrack is great as well~

the3rdhunter 2022-04-06 00:48

Wow! Great game! The art and music set an amazing tone. Really enjoyed that bg music. The game was simple, but challenging and I kept wanting to try 'one more run' after I would die. It's pretty punishing that you loose all your timestepper charge when you get hit. I would be running after a kunai at the edge of the screen and get popped by an enemy spawning onto the screen a frustratingly high amount of times! But since you warned me, it still always felt like it was my fault for not getting out of the way in time. Lol. Excellent work. One of my favorites I've played so far this jam.

evolution101 2022-04-06 00:58

Great combination of the agile character, infinite enemies and having to collect your ammo. The art and music made for a great atmosphere. Well done!

boxedmeatrevolution 2022-04-06 01:14

Really fun game, it was pretty addictive. The kunai had good physics. The gameplay ended up being quite frustrating though, because the spawn indicators didn't work properly and the thrown weapons always ended up at the edge of the screen. I felt that I was just hoping for RNG in the kunai bounces for them to come back to me in the middle. Music and visuals were both really good, and it was clever to sync them with the sunset in that way. Gave a really nice feel to the game as evening set in.

smilewood 2022-04-06 01:18

I really liked this game. It looks fantastic and feels great to play. The amount of detail in the backgrounds and enemies is great, I loved the little touches like the LD50 on the buildings. Everything animated is also fantastic, shoutout to the time unwind animation and the charge animation for the shooting enemies. The audio was good, the background music give it a really chill vibe and the other effects fit well.

The gameplay itself was also great, the movement felt just right for the area that it is played in (although I would have rather had space be the jump key, I found myself hitting it several times). I liked the use of limited ammo that had to be retrieved, it forced me to the edges and kept me engaged with the enemies spawning there (probably my #1 cause of taking damage). Throwing the kunais felt great to me, and I liked the way that the enemy deaths could launch them a good ways depending where they hit; thanks to those launches I was able to end up with a triple kill off one throw.

I would have liked to see an exit option somewhere, having to force-quit a game in full screen always feels weird to me, and I did have the issue that others here mentioned where my mouse was able to go out of the window and minimize the game, resulting in a couple of hits. Beyond those issues this was a fantastic, well polished game that I really enjoyed playing. Well done!

fromage 2022-04-06 01:45

First off, game looks great, plays smooth. The rewind time mechanic is cool and in theme. Nice work!

mopifish 2022-04-06 01:45

I really like this game :)

The kunais felt chunky, and powerful. They were super fun to use, especially tactically. I loved when they would bounce off the walls and then stick to any enemy, and then the enemy would send it flying back at me when it exploded! Made it super fun.

The character felt great to use, the animation looked beautiful, and it was super responsive. I really would've liked for the character to be used more, as opposed to just running back and forth for kunai. Some platforms, or occasional obstacles to dodge, would've really spiced up the movement.

This game has a TON of potential and I would love to see it developed further!!

Great entry all around

usernam-e 2022-04-06 01:54

wow that was a really fun game! all of the mechanics work so well together that i don't feel i could start on everything i like! great work!!

papaya 2022-04-06 02:32

Absolutely amazing graphics and satisfying kunai hit effects. The player movement is also responsive and I like how you can move down while in air with s/down arrow to land quickly. Thanks for the game.

the-great-gallus 2022-04-06 09:49

Really cool game!

Overall, I quite enjoyed the concept and the gameplay. It really felt like it would fit excellently as the penultimate level in a longer game, which would be really cool to see.

I liked the mechanics of the kunai. Having their hitboxes remain active until they embedded in the ground was a nice feature, as it led to some cool moments were the falling kunai from an enemy death could chain into another, which was nice for effect and also a good feeling if it saved you. Being able to bounce them off of the walls to hit the laser enemies was really convenient as well when things got hectic.

I both liked and disliked having to go pick them up. I liked it for the way it limited the ammo and required you to be careful when retrieving them if you were out of ammo. However, with the punishing damage mechanic of losing all progress on your timestepper from a single hit, there were some points where it felt impossible to grab the kunai and not get damaged, which usually meant it was impossible to finish the charge in time (though that does tie in quite nicely with the theme of inevitability, so I don't mind as much as I might in another game).

The aesthetics were were really on point, with the monochromatic color scheme slowly shifting from that lovely lavender color to a deep red as you run out of time. Having the sun right in the center as a very obvious indication of the timer and impending doom, as well as the underlying tic-toc on the music was really nice (especially with the tic-toc becoming frantic when you are just about out of time). Great design on that stuff.

I did have a few issues while playing. First off, full screen not actually being full screen but rather just a larger window did lead to some troubles with clicking outside the window when things got frantic, causing loss of focus and almost a guaranteed game loss. Second, the kunai hit detection was a bit dodgy sometimes, where I'd throw a kunai at an enemy and it would just fly straight through them, which usually led to hit on myself and a lost attempt. Third, and this is less a general problem and more just a suggestion from my experience, but I frequently lost track of my standard mouse cursor on the screen when moving it around in the frenzy, so maybe it would be of benefit to have a custom cursor for the mouse that both fit the aesthetic and made it easier to keep track of?

I had a great time with the game. Great job with it!

Edit: Immediately after submitting this review, I went to close the window down (I had left it up while writing up the review) and it had the white victory screen XD Must be some sort of bug with the timer running in the background or something while on the main menu (I don't have time at the moment to try and replicate it), but I thought you might get a kick out of it.

gabriel-corbani 2022-04-06 16:42

The art and the music are really engaging. The kunai mecanics and physics works very well and the go back in time idea suits pretty well with the theme! I couldn't play in fullscreen which sometimes caused problem cause I clicked outside of the game window, but is a small detail. Great job!

2022-04-06 16:55

Really fun game! I included it in my Ludum Dare compilation video series, if you’d like to take a look. :) https://youtu.be/PKNtuuCFWt0

ldp 2022-04-06 17:57

Wow, congrats, I had a lot of fun, your game is really juicy, easy to play with great challenges. The mood, the art, the music are really nice. Amazing works!

marcenat 2022-04-06 20:40

One of the best entries I've seen so far, the poslih is amazing. Stunning art and animation, cool fx, nice music and sound effect. I especially like the incorporation of the theme within the story, it's still a strightforward "timer" but at least it's not just a UI element, it's a beautiful sunset :)

ambrits 2022-04-06 21:37

Great graphics, effects and audio. Controls were responsive. Even though you have to get your ammo back, I still felt the gamplay may be a little too simple.

darriasart 2022-04-07 02:31

Nicely done, the pacing, color, accessibility options, tons of polish make this really stand out

jovialknoll 2022-04-07 03:56

I'm blown away, visual and gamefeel polish on everything. The sunset visuals, the simple yet effective music, the particle effects and the chunky blast feel of the kunai throw. Bravo.

paul-nadan 2022-04-07 04:15

The graphics are amazing all around - I'm really impressed how you made a bunch of simple sky-scraper graphics come together to make such a cool skyline effect (also the LD50 is a nice touch). The particle effects are also really well developed given this is all done in pygame. The music sets the mood nicely, and I like how it's always synced up with the sunset progression. The game feel is great, especially the kunai physics. The gameplay itself is fun, but I think it could use a greater variety of enemy types to mix up the strategy. It was also really hard; I think it would have been nice if the shooting enemies moved around a bit horizontally, so that there was some way to hit them without a kunai getting stuck at the edge on a bad bounce. The fact you lose all your charges when you get hit was also a bit unforgiving, because if it happened near the middle of the day there wasn't always time to recover; maybe deducting some fixed amount each time could work? Overall though this was super polished and really fun, nice job!

sacredyouma 2022-04-07 04:26

A very interesting concept! The music and graphic are the main selling point of your game. Though, it seems like the kunai often pass through the enemies and could make disastrous scenario. You should fix that. You could also add paused menu, retry button, and exit button (I was frustrated that I couldn't retry when I had made a wrong move!). Sadly, I cannot make it to 100 miles... Fortunately, I saved my best run (you should make a high score as well).

Edit: Oh, and the cursor as well! You could also make a custom cursor to make it clearer to be seen!

Beautiful game, nice smooth gameplay. Some neat stuff with the kunai being active even when falling after a miss or exploding off enemies.

skruffye 2022-04-07 18:19

Really, really stylish game. The mechanics were great and genuinely fun. I'm probably going to go back and play more a bit later, after I've looked over more games.

Everything worked together really well. The soundtrack was thematic (with the tick-tock effect) and all the graphical assets blended together to create an interesting, neon-silhouette kind of aesthetic that totally fit the scenario.

Only complaint is that I'm not sure having a single hit reset your entire progress is quite fair. It seems that taking only one or two hits is enough to doom you completely, depending on how when and how far apart you take the hits, at which point I'd say maybe just call it a game over without having to keep playing just to lose.

Overall, great work--really enjoyed this one!

tomssuli 2022-04-07 19:27

Awesome skillgame! played it finally through after about an hour of trying and dying. What a run, phew.

The music was good and it also signaled me when it the night was coming and after playing for a while I already knew in which part of the song it was too late to screw up.

Great art and representation and very solid gameplay. If I failed it was because I sucked and not because of a bug or bad mechanics.

Overall very nice and polished game. I spent most time with this game of all that I've reviewed so far. Thank you and kudos to you!

jusw85 2022-04-12 11:30

I love the art and music! The gameplay was a little too hard for me though. My best run was 15 miles remaining, couldnt get past that. I wish more could be done with the time rewind mechanic as well, right now there doesn't seem to be any reason for delaying 'E', just press 'E' whenever it charges up, since you lose all your charge when you get hit.

brachistosauro 2022-04-12 19:19

Really well made game, from graphics to audio to gameplay, every single part works really well! At first I didn't understand why I kept dying or why I should rewind time, but after a while I got it.

[Thanks for submitting your game to stream!](https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1457959497?t=04h26m26s)

This is a ridiculously well-polished compo game. Such a great amount of juice, and a solid, easy-to-understand mechanic. Well done!

svemir 2022-04-21 09:50

Really nice mood in this game and the controls felt great. Responsive, juicy and handled quite well even when moving so quickly. I really liked how fast and frantic the game is, although was a bit too difficult for me. I replayed it but modified it so you only lose 2 charges when hit and it was still challenging for me - so a little difficulty menu would help. But giving the time, the amount of polish you achieved is really impressive!

peachtreeoath 2022-04-21 17:27

IMO, the sun-as-the-timer alone warrants noting. It was such a nice way to tell when you would need to time travel, although since it's not totally precise, I would often just time travel probably unoptimally just to be safe. But it sorta had the dual purpose of visually brightening up the scene, but also giving you a visual sense of relief as the timer now retreats back into safe territory.

The game was pleasantly challenging. I will say that on a wide monitor, I found myself turning my head quite often, but that should be a rare case for most players.

pious 2022-04-22 02:53

I just played it now that I discovered it's a winner. And oh my goodness, it definitely deserves it's place! Fantastic job and honestly a masterclass for a jam. I want to study it and learn from it. The simplicity of the character, the mechanics, how great it feels to throw kunai and pick it up, simple music, absolutely great. I can't give it a rating anymore but I totally would give it great scores all around. Fantastic job!

pious 2022-04-22 02:56

Honestly I may reach out and ask you more about your thought process and how you approached the jam. I'd love to see a post mortem too
