LD40 — The more you have, the worse it is

Splotch 2 by Sebastian Lague 2017-12-06T00:23:03Z

Might not be the game for me, but good job Sebastian!

Astray by AidanMarkham 2017-12-07T08:09:24Z

This game is okay. Nice temperature and inventory mechanics. But this unnamed omnipotent being supposedly threatens you by making your life a "living hell", but never actually does so, just summoning a harmless earthquake, technically meaning that this game doesn't go under the theme.

Just making the player temperature go crazy would be a good enough fit. Also, the ending sequence was a little anti-climactic, just fading away to the title screen, like dying.

Now you might not have had much time left, which would make sense. But if you did, what gives? I'll admit that with my game, I submitted it 5 HOURS before the deadline, and I did NOTHING to the game during those 5 hours, and I regret not doing anything to it.

I apologize for the negative review, like I said in the beginning, this game is okay.

Voiid by Ace17 2017-12-03T23:07:21Z

It's not very common to find a 3D Platformer online, and this game utilizes the jam's theme VERY well. The only downsides are that you can't go up/down slopes and the audio can get very irritating to listen to. All in all, this is a pretty good entry.

Dangle Copter by pkenney 2017-12-04T06:07:44Z

The main 'gimmick' of this game is good, having to rescue people after a helicopter crash. The art is also okay.

But while this gimmick is pretty good, it's also very bad. I pretty much gave up on the final 2 stages thanks to the people CONSTANTLY falling off of my helicopter. Also, by the way, the controls (as you should know) are also part of the gimmick in this game.

In the end, the game is okay.

Legend of Crystalia by Hackingroelz 2017-12-04T03:19:24Z

I like this game's visuals and music. But for me, these controls just don't feel right. I wish you could also use W, A, S and D to move alongside the arrow keys. Also, it is WAY too easy to fall off, at least for me. And the last stage feels cheap, the enemies can kill you FAR too easily. Besides those cons that I have, this game is still pretty good

Mr. Capital! by fluidvolt 2017-12-04T04:19:18Z

This game utilizes the theme in a VERY clever way. However, the trial and error that you have to go through in the later stages is a little tedious. Other than that. The game is pretty good!

Slightly annoying traffic by JOrbits 2017-12-03T22:18:46Z

Very enjoyable to play. Watching the cars crash into each other is SO satisfying for some reason.

Wall Run by R3L0ad1 2017-12-03T21:04:15Z

Well, for 11 years old, this is pretty impressive. However, I think you should've made the intro sequence skippable,Game Over sequence is too long. And the controls are a little janky, when the player rotates, the controls became VERY funky. The camera is also a little weird, it's not awful, its just, kinda strange. Overall, this game does have its problems, but it still is a game. I'm sorry for the negative review, but I the game just isn't MY cup of tea. Anyway, keep making games and, more importantly, keep learning.

Wall Run by R3L0ad1 2017-12-04T08:08:46Z

You don't have to apologize, after all, you're just 11 years old! Using UNITY ENGINE. Even I don't know that engine well. Just IMAGINE what it would be like had I made my game using Unity, an engine I don't understand. It would be a disaster. But, like I said, keep learning and improving your game development skills. :)

Nanonator by RAC-Games 2017-12-11T08:51:08Z

Amazing game! Sorry that Ludum Dare 40 was such a horrendous experience :( But at least the game was great.

The game looks nice (if a little creepy at first glance), the controls are tight, the gameplay is very enjoyable and the music is awesome! You all even took the effort to make an intro sequence.

All in all, this has been probably my favorite Ludum Dare 40 game so far! One last note, my score was 730

Shooter Guy by sirikan 2017-12-04T04:02:07Z

This gave me a good laugh, even though I think it's for the wrong reasons. The enemy AI is very basic; just turning around and shooting at you occasionally. But, eh, it's okay.

Shooter Guy by sirikan 2017-12-04T04:51:56Z

Oh, sorry about that :(

Overkiller by SubWooferX3 2017-12-05T08:57:28Z

I like the art, the barrels and the music. But I don't like how you HAVE to traverse bullet heaven to survive. Regardless, good game. And the farthest I got was wave 6.

The Invasion of Robots by Swifttech 2017-12-03T21:07:57Z

Impressive, if a little basic

Spin Attack by ditzel 2017-12-03T21:49:52Z

This game is really good. The puzzles are perfect. The controls are (Mostly) great and there is a good amount of play time. Overall, good job.

Gold Taxi by Code Dream 2017-12-12T05:10:49Z

Nice game. The graphics are pretty good and the controls are okay.

But, I don't like how this game is devoid of audio, I'll give you the benefit of the doubt that time constraints were what caused this. Also, I feel that the timer should increase when you get to DIZ, specifically by the amount of seconds that passed.

Other than all that, this is pretty great!

I'm not here by Jiri Hysek 2017-12-12T05:31:10Z

Excellent stealth game! The graphics are simplistic yet great, the sound mechanic is both well implemented and a great challenge aspect, the sound effects are silly and the controls are perfect, though I prefer WASD.

My only complaints are that the music is a little unnerving , it is somewhat easy to get cornered by guards, especially when you have more coins, and that the game is a little short.

I would probably say that this is my 2nd favorite Ludum Dare 40 game thus far. Very solid entry, great job! :D

Snake Charmer by fakeyou 2017-12-04T04:44:53Z

Like the person above said, the idea of using the Snake format for this jam is very clever, and the snake itself looks good from an artistic point of view.

The only issue with this game is that the controls are slightly janky. There have been several occasions where I press a button and the snake doesn't move in the direction I want it to.

Overall, considering how much you had to strip down, I'd say that this is pretty good.

Caffeinated Alien by Justin Toyo 2017-12-05T01:47:08Z

This game is pretty great! The art is excellent (even surpassing MY game), The health risks of caffeine is a perfect fit for the theme, and the sound effect are awesome (even if I sometimes mistook a bullet hitting a tree or something like that for attacking an enemy/getting hit). And I like the fact that you have to SHOOT the chests open instead of just, 'opening' it yourself.

However, I feel that you move WAY too fast when you collect coffee, it's like Dave is on a sugar rush when he drinks coffee. The music is okay, I would probably say that it sounds better than my game's music. The turret-like enemies are a little annoying, what with shooting at you and everything. One last thing, my final score was 1485.

Overall, really good. Maybe even BETTER than my game! Good job :D

Claustrophobia by Fecalmancer 2017-12-07T05:14:52Z

Good job! This game can be a little disorienting at first, but other that that the game is pretty great with the music, the transition between areas and the levels themselves. overall, good game!

Theme - The Game by Cubeeo 2017-12-15T03:13:28Z

Short but silly, even if it's a little TOO short, and not THAT silly. But eh, this was your first entry so I'm okay with it

Finally done :D by Tomas.2D 2017-12-25T21:13:00Z

The jumping is interesting, you can only move in one direction while moving, or else you'll stop mid air (on the X axis) and, if you mash the A/D button, you can 'glide' around. And because of these controls, some of the level design is unfair.

I've also made a video of me beating the game with all 1000 points! (even if I exploit the glide bug, also sorry that it isn't on YouTube, I don't wanna make a social media account considering all the controversy these days)

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1gaYdGBrOioiIcXgFGbJovacAVMdDTRSC/view?usp=sharing

For your first LD jam, it's a decent submission. Congrats for getting past 30 ratings! And, just an sorta unrelated question:I checked one of your blog posts and saw some text in a foreign language. What is it?

Super Wall Paint! by beepyeah 2017-12-07T06:00:08Z

An basic concept for a game, but it's done pretty well. The music and graphics are basic yet excellent. However, I didn't like the controls. I just find them too floaty.

But I seriously HATE the fact that, if you make one little mistake, you are sent right back to the beginning, making it IMPOSSIBLE to learn from your mistakes. Besides that. Nice effort

Maze Trudger! by Colossal Gnome 2017-12-25T10:31:08Z

Neat game. The art is pretty good, the voice clips are silly and flares are a nice addition. But, *sigh*.. now for the not so good parts..

The maze is VERY big, and a lot of it is just dead ends. The enemies can DESTROY you thanks to not being able to see what's ahead, even with flares, sometimes you can just 'pass' through enemies, health packs and flares for some reason. And (this is just my opinion) I'm not too fond of the tile-based controls.

But hey, this is just your first Ludum Dare (this is also MY first Ludum Dare, and my game has IT'S problems as well), and for your first Ludum Dare, a decent entry (ignoring the not so good stuff, that is).

Shape Invasion by RonanRory 2017-12-04T06:13:04Z

The reason why I made the flashing effect was because I wanted to polish the game. Even thought I will admit that when you use a bomb, things can get haywire VERY quickly. Anyways, thanks for the feedback. :)

Shape Invasion by RonanRory 2017-12-05T01:19:53Z

Thanks for all the feedback everyone! I was not expecting people to be this kind on Ludum Dare (thanks Youtube commenters >.< ).

Shape Invasion by RonanRory 2017-12-11T04:34:13Z

Oh the 'mini-nightmare' didn't DISTURB me, but it sure did stress me out ever so slightly

Shape Invasion by RonanRory 2017-12-13T02:34:45Z

Yes, it was the timer.

Shape Invasion by RonanRory 2017-12-15T03:07:49Z

@cubeeo - I laughed so much upon seeing your comment, I just found it quite silly. Also, cool, this is your first game jam as well? I'll check out your game now :)

Shape Invasion by RonanRory 2017-12-20T09:00:59Z

Oops, I overslept, so now I'm gonna respond to the posts all at once:

@banan - I do realize that the game progresses too slowly and that it isn't very replayable. I didn't think to include varying jump heights in this game, also, I find it silly that you linked me a Unity tutorial for jumping. I actually used a different engine for this game (I regret not using/learning GameMaker beforehand), I WISH I knew Unity well enough to make a game like this.

@vasco-rodrigues - Thanks! I've noticed how this is the only comment mentioning the background color (In a positive light at least). I don't mean any offense to anyone saying that.

@papaver - I wouldn't really call this game "cute" but I'm okay with that. I'm sorry that the text was hard to read thanks to the background. Also, I can't believe I didn't mention this in the description, but the more shapes that you destroy, the easier it is to destroy them. Now that I think about it, that seems a little contradictory to the theme, but the frequency that the shapes spawn by that point makes up for it. Also, I don't know what would cause a bullet to just change direction BEFORE it hits a wall. And..

OH JEEBUS!! I FORGOT TO RESET THE SCORE WHEN THE GAME ENDS!!! DAAAAAARRNIIIIIITT!!!!

Anyways, thanks for the feedback everyone!

Coffee Run by Canaha 2017-12-05T08:20:30Z

The game looks great. The animations are well synced to the movement, the audio is okay and the cell shading is a nice touch. However, I don't think you should just 'stop' if you collect too many water bottles, and the game is a little laggy on my computer, it's even worse in night mode. Nonetheless its pretty good.

LD49 — Unstable

Unstable Relation by Mathiouza 2021-10-20T23:33:12Z

I was caught off guard when I was suddenly thrown into a third-person action game. I was actually having a difficult time comprehending the instructions while taking on evil garbage bags. I very much approve of the dash ability, for being very satisfying, and for having a great animation.

Animation in general, is pretty well made here. I can't really speak from experience, not being very familiar with 3D animation, and especially not with Godot. And I was considering saying this when I commented on one of your blog posts, but you certainly kick my ass in art skills.

This game was surprisingly short, but that's alright. I tend to spend an hour on each game, including commenting on them. Combat felt nice, the trash bags having a windup is also a great detail. Though the game does take a bit to start up for me.

I'll say, you did a significantly better job than me in all categories! Wonderful job!

The Amazing Clownzie by pkenney 2021-10-20T01:39:25Z

Maybe this isn't the type of game for me, but it's great that you made *something.* It's alright, not *very* good, but also not *very* bad. Though it sure seems like someone took inspiration from 90s game design what with that 5th spotlight at the end.

But yeah, it's OK, it certainly fits the Theme to a T, though not so much in Innovation. But hey, you managed to finish it. And it's amazing to find out you're now a father! That's amazing to hear!! Congratulations, I wish the best for you all!!!

Heat Death by zeta0134 2021-10-07T00:19:15Z

This was a really good game. Controls are good, although I felt moving diagonally was slightly weird; might just be me, though. The levels are pretty well-crafted, some keeping me for a good minute or two.

Honestly, I felt the terminal dialogue was a little distracting, and I would've personally preferred the music stay clear. But those are really the only bad things I can say about this. Great job, all of you!

Interstellar Highway Robbery by Corny 2021-10-21T04:56:16Z

*Holy shit!* This game looks phenomenal! And only *ONE PERSON MADE IT!!* **_DURING THE COMPO!!!_**

Good god! Skimming through your other entries, this one reigns SUPREME among graphics! *Perfect* send-off for GameMaker Studio 1.4, unlike my disaster of an entry.

Game loop is also pretty good, though I feel it's a little barren.

As other people have said, there's no audio in the original build; but in the revised version, the audio is *WAY* too quiet! I had to turn my my volume to **90%** to even barely hear the sound! Normally things are alright at ~16-20%.

There's not too much to say here, this game is AMAZING, and you should give yourself a REAL pat on the back for this one! Bravo, man!

Rumble by BrothersT 2021-10-20T02:19:24Z

Pretty good game you got here. I like that there's a detailed tutorial before the game proper, with humor mixed in to make that much better. The art style is simplistic, but it's charming, and it's certainly not yet another generic pixel art game. Groovy music throughout the experience is also appreciated. There's clearly a very respectable level of polish in this entry.

The gameplay itself is also pretty neat, though I unfortunately can't really say I liked it that much. I'm not sure if the game goes on endlessly, it does seem to, though; but I got to Round 6 before quitting because I was getting frustrated. You know, for being in a building that is currently collapsing, these residents sure do take their sweet time slowly meandering across the building floors. Maybe they deserve to die, but then I wouldn't get paid.

Overall, this game is a nice little arcade experience. Good job for finishing it, and for giving it that final polishing!

Feed the Queen by UnidayStudio 2021-10-18T01:42:57Z

These graphics look super good! And the animations are also great. But unfortunately, that's all the good things I can say about this entry.

These levels are incredibly annoying. I'm worried this isn't a fair criticism, but these foodstuffs *REALLY* don't wanna stay still! I make the slightest movement, and then they just CAREEN off the tray. And that's when I DON'T have to make a jump; when I do, it's pretty much just luck whether or not the food lands back in the tray. For a game this difficult, I actually think there are too MANY levels here! The last level *alone* requires the playtime of an entire Ludum Dare entry in it's own right. However, I DO like that you don't NEED to bring the exact order to the queen, though you'll have to carry her to the bathroom more often.

Though it is impressive that you managed to make so many levels; especially after having to make an engine switch. I also like the menu/failure music, but the ingame ambience is a little too quiet, I feel.

So yeah, I spent in total roughly 2 hours on your entry, including writing this comment, and going back and actually finishing the game. Good job!

The Space-Ton Device by Sinci1 2021-10-21T18:34:13Z

I feel this game's more a test of muscle memory than anything else; even then, it's surprisingly easy to lose here. But hey, I'm quite surprised that you made something in less than half a day! Good job!

Unicycle Scientist: Saves the World by MrWhimble 2021-10-21T20:16:54Z

Really good looking game! That intro cutscene was very well-made as well, though I wish you could skip it. The gameplay reminds me of Excitebike, but now that I'm typing this, I realize it actually shares more in common with QWOP. The music is also pretty good. I think I'll try and beat this game after posting my comment.

EDIT: I'm a little late on reporting this, but I went back to the game and beat it first try! You two should be *very* proud of yourselves for managing to create this entry.

The Landscape Hates You! by RonanRory 2021-10-07T00:57:11Z

Thanks very much everybody, especially you, @jammygunns

@jakobthequizguy - I've become better, and decided to update the description with a better account of how the development went. But of course, I included a picture of the original description for context, and for curious people, like myself.

@nardandas - Yeah, I was considering doing that, but at the time, I felt it was more interesting for the player to be on their toes, not knowing what exactly would happen. Perhaps that was one of MANY bad decisions made.

The Landscape Hates You! by RonanRory 2021-10-20T00:14:17Z

Ok, well it's been long enough since I've last responded to a bunch of these. My entry only has 10 votes; and with only one day left, I think it's *probably* safe to say that this won't make it; guess they can't all be winners.

@oillen - I like that you've added (+) and (-) for pros and cons. I am also quite surprised you took notice of the handplaced blocks as well; and there are indeed different boing sounds.

I was considering having different sprites for the different block types, but I didn't allow enough time to include that; and even then, I was designing levels with blank blocks in mind. The lack of graphical detail is probably my most despised aspect of my entry.

And it didn't even CROSS my mind to have an alternative input method in arrow keys, but I thought it was a good idea to get rid of level restarting right before making the final build! Though I was in extreme crunch mode by that point, I still probably could've included that before building one last time. One last thing, that is a REALLY friggin' cool idea you suggested. I have thought of an isometric version of this game, though I haven't tried making it; I'm not sure an enhanced version of this would benefit that well from being a platformer. But I don't know, maybe it could work!

@peace-of-cake-games - Yeah, I only kept that previous description just as a reflection of how I felt right after submitting my game, and as context for some of the comments. Honestly, I think @monkeyfox's submission [Un Stabl](https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/49/un-stabl) does voice-acted humor an entire *realm* better than me. THAT'S where a 5-star humor rating goes; whereas mine is probably around ~2 stars? And I'm definitely gonna need to brush up my art skills (no pun intended) if I wanna become a dedicated artist for a Jam entry.

Also, I wouldn't want to make this game some sort of 'troll platformer'. If I were to expand this concept, it would probably be a *VERY* different game from what's seen here!

@pkenney - I wasn't expecting to see your name again! That's pretty damn cool! Another thing that surprises me is that someone actually said something GOOD about bounce block hangtime! I personally thought that was the worst block type because of how intrusive it can be. I didn't even know the term 'hangtime' until now!!

As for the levels, I would also say the "bounce tower" one was the best; I knew I had to do stuff with these blocks, and that level idea was a no-brainer. Though just thinking back to that crunch period of making the levels could actually make me shiver. I had *some* butterflies in my stomach during those last few hours; though by the end, when I was scrambling to make the title/end screens and the game icon, I didn't even have time to be worried.

I'm going to remember that feeling I was in while making those levels. How long? I'd rather not think about it.

**AND THAT'S IT!**

Someone hasn't been playing/rating enough Ludum Dare submissions. It still annoys me a little, that I *REEEAAAALLLLYYY* didn't feel like playing any entries; and it just so happens the the Play+Rate period is 1 WEEK shorter than usual! I'm gonna try to play through some more tonight, including some of *your* submissions; Though my game is probably beyond saving by this point.

Thanks very much to those who bothered rating my entry, I'm incredibly grateful for you all. Have a good evening, everyone.

The Landscape Hates You! by RonanRory 2021-10-21T05:13:31Z

@mathiouza - Don't worry, it took me a while to get to your game. And yeah, I was in a serious rush to get this game out, so I rushed the description and didn't think to include the controls.

Il Bambino by gamebuilder 2021-10-09T00:57:18Z

Pretty detailed game you've got. However, Lua's dream story is a bit too long. Movement looks kinda goofy, as if you're typing the characters' path through the area; animation also doesn't seem to take into account *which* key is being pressed, though that's just nitpicking on my part. Also, music seems rather scarce; and when there IS music, it doesn't last very long.

It's satisfying to cast the right spell in the right location. Collecting stars and acquiring more mana than I'll EVER need is also very intoxicating. Though the spell input is a little strange; I'd rather have Q or E to open the spell menu, rather than S.

Also I can't get over how the main character looks like the Wendy's mascot.

So yeah, great job on this game!

Unstable by Christian L. 2021-10-21T17:54:22Z

Well, as soon as I started, I fell straight down to my doom, how lovely. Uh, besides that, this game's pretty good; however that wavy saw level is just too much. Good job, overall!

Into the Cone Zone by Cookie Dragon 2021-10-07T00:50:25Z

Well, I have to agree with @teddyincdev that this doesn't really fit the theme. It's a neat little entry, even though there isn't that much content. This runs like absolute garbage on my PC, but that's more on me. And I managed to get myself launched out of the game world, though.

At least you managed to submit something! I just hope that you all didn't go through all the turmoil that I did.

Gem of Stability by JakobTheQuizGuy 2021-10-20T01:03:56Z

Now, I'm not sure if I'll make an actual video out of it, but I've been recording all of the games I've been playing from this Ludum Dare. And let me tell you, I ended up recording a lot more footage than I needed from this game: 11 MINUTES!!! And my high score was 210. That's already a VERY high Fun rating from me!

And these are some wonderful graphics you've got here. Great animation as well, very smooth and with a nice flow to it. I noticed that projectiles are shot from the character's finger, and there's even a recoil animation! I always love attention to detail like that.

At first, I though the game was a bit too simple at first. And it is, but MAN if it isn't well executed then I don't know what IS. Things do get quite hectic around 200 seconds in, but even then it was still fun. I guess one thing I didn't like was that, if I was close to an edge and wind started blowing, I couldn't prevent myself falling. But then again, that's not necessarily the game's fault, is it?

The music is interesting, and it does serve it's purpose, but it's nothing too special. But the sound effects, that sound of hitting an enemy is SO perfect, you can FEEL the impact; but it's a good thing you don't actually feel it. And the player's footsteps as well is great, it's normally low and in the background, but when you're nearly off the edge, it gets faster along with your steps, warning you of your situation.

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little jealous after skimming through your other entry pages. But that doesn't matter, what does is that this is one amazing entry! Give yourself another pat on the back!

Gem of Stability by JakobTheQuizGuy 2021-10-21T21:48:14Z

@jakobthequizguy - Eh, I don't guarantee it'll be made. I'm just not in the mood really.

And yes, it shouldn't have taken me so long to respond.

Hell's Dishes by mikouaji 2021-10-08T23:40:34Z

The vertical mouselook axis is rather sensitive compared to horizontal look and it's too easy to drop plates onto the floor. One time, the game picked up the plates I already had, among other physics oddities.

Though the music is surprisingly atmospheric, at least, to me. Good job, nonetheless

Drunk Fist by Nicolas Revillon 2021-10-20T03:19:53Z

Well... this game is interesting indeed. It's pretty cool that textures are distorted like old PS1 affine texture mapping. And the music is a real damn banger, really good for a game jam entry.

But unfortunately this game, apart from the aesthetics, is rather mind numbing; you just punch giant upright cockroaches and drink alcohol. I didn't even notice any stat improvements upon consuming any beer, I wished you could heal, however. I'm not sure if there's something I'm missing.

I played the original first, and then tried out the Post Jam version. I do like the proper title screen here, how the credits image is bigger, and the inclusion of player voice clips. It was also great to see menu improvements, like some visual flair and being able to actually use the in-game menu. Being able to look around fully is also appreciated. Though I don't like that you can *barely* hear the music here.

Overall, this game looks great, it plays nice, and has some damn good music! Good job, all of you!

MIFFED by Caladrius 2021-10-21T07:56:30Z

This game does a good job at replicating the intricacies of Doom, like the bobbing animation, or how enemies have sprites for different viewing angles. I was not expecting that intro cutscene.

I can appreciate how silly these enemies are; however, I think the security guard enemy is a bit too difficult. It took me a while, after losing twice, but I did end up getting the keycards and beating the game. I liked how whimsical the boss fight was, but I wasn't a fan of the lack of an ending of some sort.

The music is alright, though the in-game music is a little quiet. Also, this game kinda takes a back seat to the theme.

Ultimately, I think you all did a pretty good job!

....To the Ends of the World and Back by Peace Of Cake Games 2021-10-06T23:40:37Z

I wouldn't consider myself a visual novel kind of person, so giving feedback might be difficult, especially anything anyone above hasn't already said.

I find the 2.5D first person view very charming; I LOVE that kinda stuff! And as I'd imagine people have already said, a fuller version of this game should definitely have more things you have to do to keep the ship 'stable'. I'm quite impressed to hear that you typed up all the dialogue in only 15 MINUTES! I don't think I could've managed something like that with so little time left!

As people have certainly said above, this game is certainly a tech demo. And as for a bigger version of this game... it's pretty interesting to think about, but I unfortunately wouldn't be interested; at least, in PLAYING it. Again, it's not really my kind of game.

Though on that note, this was also pretty easy to understand anyway, THAT, I really appreciate. It's a pretty neat game overall, even if it's a tech demo.

Cemetery Pinball by DDesignDude 2021-10-21T05:30:53Z

I remember there was a Ludum Dare #40 submission that was an NES homebrew. I didn't play it, though; I watched Jupiter Hadley play it on one of her videos. It's always REALLY cool when there's a homebrew Ludum Dare submission; I think it's cool that there's a PS1 homebrew entry for LD49, but this takes the cake for me, purely due to nostalgia factor. I'm no pinball wizard, I'm just so young that I grew up on the DS. Shocking, I know.

It's quite surreal playing a Ludum Dare submission with a control screen showing a DS system.

The physics are pretty crazy, it's quite impressive knowing that they are handcrafted. It's a janky solution, but I like that you can bump the pinball in case of an infinite loop. And is the game supposed to freeze upon hitting a RIP icon?

I don't get why you'd have a credits screen if you did all the work yourself? Doesn't it seem a little unnecessary?

Not sure how this fits the theme, but it's interesting nonetheless. It's great that not only did you finish an entry for this jam, but you did it ON THE DS!!!

It's pretty cool to see another Ludum Dare entry celebrating someone's birthday! Happy birthday, Monica!!!

Number Fission by Escapade 2021-10-20T03:25:25Z

Right off the bat, this game scores some points in Innovation. However, I'm assuming that one is supposed to play this game strategically; but I'm not that kind of player, so I just randomly place numbers about and see what happens! Ultimately, my flailing around got me a high score of 15.

I feel this game is lackluster, but I'm not sure what else you can do with this concept, sorry. But you did manage to complete and submit an entry, so good job!

Unstable Genius by Doc Kaos 2021-10-21T04:19:45Z

Well, I got stuck after activating the Jibber Jabber client. I don't know what to say... It's perhaps not the game for me.. sorry. It IS pretty cool that you implemented operating system tabs, however.

Wild Magic by BangTheWall 2021-10-21T21:45:52Z

This is probably the most atmospheric entry I've played, which really speaks to the music; it actually feels a little eerie with no sound effects, though I would've liked it if there were any.

I seriously love how this game plays; I'm a platformer buff, so a game like that where you can wall jump and dash around levels is great. The dash maneuver goes pretty far, however. I tended to underestimate how much distance it covered, and I imagine that added to my playtime quite a bit.

The graphics in this game are wonderful! I like how well animated the elven girl is, including all those symbols that explode out upon death, or coalesce into the obelisks. I'd imagine those symbols represent the untamed magic that you accumulate. The environment is also lush and mushroomy and just ethereal.

And yeah, it sure is a pretty difficult game, but I was able to complete it in 8:13:863!

Supreme job! all of you!!

Space Jalopy by SageMade 2021-10-21T17:42:35Z

I feel like there could be an interesting game in this; it's mechanics sure are complex, and I don't think I fully understood how I should've been playing; I didn't really find out how to heal in particular. Having the world rotate around the player also kinda hurt my eyes a little. Music choices are good, though. And it's really cool that you integrated controller support as well!

It's certainly a very intriguing game. Great job, both of you!

Displaced by bbqyqyqy 2021-10-21T19:29:10Z

I had the same struggles as those up above. And after knowing you're supposed to click ABOVE the white line, the game went by REAL fast.

There's not really too much I can say. But congrats on your first Ludum Dare (I think)!

Please don't explode ! by Mouf 2021-10-20T22:28:58Z

While I may not be the biggest fan of the pixel art aesthetic, I can still say that this game looks rather nice.

Animation is also quite detailed, like the 'artefact' itself, of course. Characters bobbing around is also a nice touch, reminds me of South Park animation. Words emit from the people on their phones. And looking back at the footage I've recorded, I noticed that the button even glows when you're near it.

I always appreciate when an entry includes a tutorial, though I noticed some misspelled words, even in the Post Jam version (not like it really matters that much).

As for gameplay, I like it; it's quite intuitive, easy to pick up and play. The game idea is almost like something that I'd conjure up and laugh myself silly about, but not nearly as absurd. Though you'd think they'd establish some boundary between the artifact and the tourists; also, *why are there people shooting at it!* Well it doesn't matter, PUNCH 'EM!!!

As for punching itself, it did feel kinda janky in the original submission, and it felt more responsive in the revised version, but I don't exactly know why that is. Perhaps I already knew what to do when playing that version. The fist graphic itself also appears rather jittery, though I can understand what would cause that to happen; I've had my struggles with similar things in the past.

Smacking a bunch of people away is great, flying off like enemies in Crash Bandicoot; though unfortunately they cannot smash any nearby crates for you. But then there comes the kids who have the strength to shove you around the stage, and I guess they're too short to get punched away. That's actually a pretty interesting way of shaking things up.

Speaking of shaking, then there's a quake that'll require that you shield the artifact; however, I'm uncertain as to how much that really matter in the long run. It seems more important to do so when people start shooting at the thing. Also, if the artifact does explode; I found it very jarring to suddenly restart the game and throw you back in there, instead of taking you to the main menu.

...Oh, yeah. Sound effects are also pretty good. Though it's odd to hear the punching impact when I hit nothing. And those people on the phone sound like they came straight from Animal Crossing; just an observation.

I have spent over an *hour* on this game and review, and I feel like moving to something else now. Great job, all of you!

Haylandia by Tanjerino 2021-10-09T00:03:06Z

Pretty good game. The graphics are minimalistic, but they work nicely, and screen transitions look pretty damn good!

As for the levels, those jump traps could've seen use in more than just 1 level. I do have to agree with sir_onionknight that the final two levels are rather cheap; I suffered a time-out and had to play the game all over again because I ran out of time on the final stage.

Apart from those last levels, this game is a good one. And you managed to finish it.

Bermuda Night Fever by Drat 2021-10-21T18:18:17Z

There's a few people here I agree with, like @raerex because of how similar this is to WarioWare, @jabsatz because I DID fall into a hole immediately as that particular minigame occurred, and @firebelley because the theme implementation doesn't really seem too strong.

Shooting enemies is a little awkward, however. I would've preferred to just use the mouse to aim at enemies, rather than move in the direction I wanna shoot. It also appears that my monitor resolution is too small for this game, and I'm guessing that's why I couldn't exit the options screen and had to Alt+F4 the application (though I went back and realized that the return button was just below my screen). Seeing what the controls are also would've been great.

But the gameplay is simple, intuitive, and it gets more complicated as you continue on. The artwork looks pretty good, and the music is great as well! And for some reason, I find that death howl to be hilarious.

In all, I think you all did a pretty good job with this entry!

Slime Your Way Up by Haise 2021-10-20T23:07:25Z

Well like everyone's already said here, and that you agree with, this game should have an indicator for the height and direction of your jump. Some sound could've also benefited this.

Graphics are pretty basic, but they get the job done. Though because of the aforementioned jumping, mixed with the level design, this game is pretty difficult. I'm glad the level was much shorter than I imagined.

I had taken over 400 seconds and gotten nowhere. Frustrated, I had given up; but after seeing the comments on this post, I decided to give the game another shot, and beat the level in 78 seconds.

Pretty simple game, but you were able to finish it. Good job!

Broken Planet by quasar098 2021-10-21T17:25:43Z

I like how simple this game is, though unfortunately my monitor resolution is too low for this game, so I couldn't see the bottom of the screen. Though I'd be great if there was more to it, like if it was level-based or you could grab a randomly spawning orb to regenerate tiles somewhere in the stage. Also, as soon as I started the game, I immediately fell to my doom, lovely.

It's not very easy making a game in only 2 days time, so I won't blame you for making something simple, that'd be stupid of me, and everyone else. This is one of a few games I've played that weren't made in a preexisting game **engine**, and that makes this pretty impressive to my eyes. Great job!

Bloody Sheepfold by VincentSergent 2021-10-21T19:35:24Z

Sorry, but I didn't really understand what I was supposed to do. The idea is pretty unique, though.

Un Stabl by MonkeyFox 2021-10-07T00:26:33Z

Well, the horse feels janky, which definitely fits the theme alright. I love the sound effects here, you sure kicked my ass in terms of phone voice recordings. The graphics were also pretty damn good for just a few days.

I was able to understand the game pretty well, even though I played the earlier version without the comic. And that ending screen wasn't what I would've expected; and I said that in a good way.

LD50 — Delay the inevitable

A duck on ice by jk5000 2022-04-08T21:01:11Z

Real impressive production value for a Compo entry! I was legitimately surprised when I found out that the voice narrates your actions Stanley Parable style! I guess the only nitpick that I have is being able to see the ends of the water plane; though I'm not sure if you could do anything about that.

There also may not be much in gameplay here, but this cleary isn't going for that. It's just an amusing little story that ties with the theme. It's not anything that would necessitate an 18+ category, perhaps 13+ would make more sense.

But yeah, you've done a lovely job on this one.

Invasion of the Inevitable Space Rocks from Outerspace by Mekuri 2022-04-07T20:46:54Z

It may not be the most original idea, but those voice overs certainly make the game a *lot* more charming. I felt the mouse controls were kind of awkward, as I felt like I was spinning around the space, having a difficult time aiming at the rocks. It also felt like I had to be a certain distance to the rock to deal damage, otherwise my shots would pass right through it.

Despite those problems, I'd say this entry is still pretty good. I seem to find 3D entries more attractive in general; probably because of the sheer *immersion.* Great job from the both of you!

Volcano Life by LukasDonkers 2022-04-21T03:32:36Z

I like how animated the player is when moving around, especially the trail they leave behind. The controls ARE a tad bit awkward, with having to press X to interact with people, then suddenly needing to use the mouse for upgrades.

The upgrades in general don't seem to help much when they aren't the dash ability, and with it shopping happening in real-time, I think the upgrades should've been more clear-cut. Like what @rinta says, you're kind of in a hurry to get something and go out; I feel items should better communicate what they increase/decrease, presenting items in a row with their stat changes listed below, for example.

The music's pretty good, and the sound effects are nice as well, though the player landing sound can get a little excited at times. I know that implementing slope physics isn't fun at all, particularly going DOWN slopes, so I get why this happens. But I digress; the point is: the NPC sounds are amazing and that's a FACT. Specifically the dogs.

The graphics are nothing special, though the animation's great as I've already said. I do really like the aesthetic of the rooms you enter, that recover your health while in them. Very mystical.... though I'm not so sure what's stopping the lava from pouring in there? That's just an observation however.

I feel some of the precision-platforming bits are ill-fitting, given that you get SLOWER as you proceed to drain health. Eventually you just can NOT get past those sections as a result!

I'm also not a fan of how after the time limit expires, you're just killed with no way to prevent it. The theme, the "inevitable" doesn't NEED to be a bad thing for the player necessarily. The lava rising is good enough, the player's goal can still be pretty independent from the "inevitable"

Apart from that, this is a very sweet game with a seriously unique premise. It's sad to see such a good entry be at such critical Danger levels, you all did such a great job. Though perhaps you didn't play many other entries, and thus a low Coolness score. I don't know if that's what happened, maybe you DID play plenty of entries yet didn't tell people about your game.

By this point, I'm just starting to speculate; you all did a great job, and it sucks to see such an entry fall by the wayside. Hopefully you all had a great time regardless.

My greatest time was 3:02

Glide'r Die by adamk33n3r 2022-04-08T23:13:30Z

Charming little experience, and the sound effects are amazing! I spent A LOT of attempts on it, but I eventually made it to my cave hut. But seriously, this game is adorable in it's simplicity, no offense. Good job!

Heaven Can Wait by paulhocker 2022-04-14T03:30:54Z

Really neat idea for a game! Unlike you, I've never watched Sword Art Online, so I'm not sure about any references or similarities this entry exhibits. The way this entry integrates the theme is quite unique, so that'll earn a good Innovation score, I bet.

All the aspects of the game are VERY simple, but they are pretty good when combined together. Best part of this game is the sound effect for collecting faith, very gratifying.

Despite all that, however, I absolutely LOATHE how enemies knock you back upon touching them. And upon getting hit, you just lose control as your character runs back like a sissy! I lost 2-3 times because of a tiny little mistake I made, causing my character to run off a platform, plunging down into MORE ENEMIES, and the cycle goes on and on and I cannot do a single thing about it!

The player needs to have invincibility during this time! I think the camera should pivot above or below you to get a sense of what could be in your way; along with that, make the player fall slower, so they can react better with what's below them.

Maybe you can spend faith to place a checkpoint to pick up where you left off. The catch is, when you respawn, the checkpoint vanishes, no longer existing. Adding to this, you should only be able to place 1 checkpoint at a time, perhaps encouraging some sort of risk/reward sort of system.

I was absolutely *terrified* of falling down when I reached the clouds, and I actually kind of enjoyed the tension it produced. But the reason WHY I was terrified was because I probably could've failed again and lost SO MUCH TIME! I really don't know how you'd reproduce this tension with the updates I suggested, though.

To end this comment, I was actually able to extend the amount of faith required from 270 to 298! Really cool idea you had, and the execution is alright, even though it leaves much to be desired. Have a great night!

Ludum Distractio by PhilStrahl 2022-04-13T01:18:19Z

Quirky little game. Very clever, meta idea. Pretty good game, although I swear I think every single damn bug, and make sure the printer is taken care of, and I **STILL** somehow miss a bug, and that completely-perfectly-fine printer somehow gets jammed EVERY, SINGLE TIME! Maybe I just have the worst luck in the world, or you're trolling us!

Music is amazing, pretty much the standard for anything Pixel Prophecy, the graphics are nice, and I definitely appreciate all the easter eggs found in the code. My favorite easter egg being this one:

haha.png

Sure caught that one. So yeah, great work as always, and I look forward to the post-mortem ;)

My highest total score ~~curse that printer~~ is 130.

Catronaut by fatPenguin 2022-04-17T02:42:37Z

My apologies for taking so long to write this post, got a little distracted by unrelated things.

The graphics are very well done here, though with the lines you can see across the cat's face it almost looks like a stuffed toy. Music is unique, being acapella, but I'm rather indifferent towards it; despite that, it's also very well done. The sound effects do their job, but I feel they're a little bit boring.

The gameplay is a pretty interesting concept, and it's executed pretty good. I've played another entry that has a similar mechanic, but that one is different enough to not be the *exact* same premise.

**And now for a personal opinion absolutely no one asked for:**

I'm not so big a fan of all the puns in the text. Now yes, I know I must be *very* fun at parties, I'm aware of that, but cat puns are one of those types of puns that have been driven so far into the ground it dug a tunnel straight through the earth and is now travelling through interstellar space as I type this. Oh hey! Wouldn't you look at that, somehow I made this rant fit with the space motif.

Eh, well at least you didn't namedrop the theme on the entry page. Still happens in the game proper, though.

**End of the personal opinion absolutely no one asked for**

Actually, speaking of the entry page, it's very well constructed! Perfectly packed paragraphs paired with plenty of pictures parallel to the package! I tend to forget how much presentation matters regarding even the entry page. Of course, with multiple people working at this, page presentation can be done while other people are working on the last parts of the game.

This entry looks like it'll get a high score from it's looks alone, so consider that a badge of honor... well, alongside all the OTHER work that was done, o-of course! Hopefully you had a great day.

Save the Titanic by Mau Zer 2022-04-13T03:09:40Z

Hm, I don't remember them saying that Titanic dodged hundreds of icebergs before sinking... Eh, anyways, the graphics are pretty good, nothing amazing, but they're good. Though it is absolutely hilarious seeing the Titanic get upgrades that allow it to *hit an iceberg without sinking!*

The game unfortunately gets pretty repetitive, and I can say that because I scored 1081.44 points, dodging 437 icebergs and grabbing 45 power-ups. I'm not really sure what else you can introduce; I know that if I were making this game, I would probably take the piss and have you fight the Abominable Snowman! He would throw icebergs at you, and the Titanic would *have turrets that would shoot at the Abominable Snowman!!* Yeah, I can be as mature as a 5-year old with stupid ideas like that. Of course, that's all assuming I had enough time ;)

Nice work from all of you.

Turbo Toilet Tomfoolery! by RonanRory 2022-04-06T20:13:58Z

@beebster-games - Thanks very much for your feedback. There probably should've been more leeway when shoving people aside, that I can agree with; but moving the character around WAS supposed to be slightly awkward.

Doors could've been a little better, probably, but I don't know how that could be done. Thanks again for playing.

Turbo Toilet Tomfoolery! by RonanRory 2022-04-07T19:30:13Z

@cursedembassy - Eh, I'm not going to enter Ludum Dare again for a while; this is likely going to be the last event I'll participate in. As I said, I don't do well with strict deadlines.

Turbo Toilet Tomfoolery! by RonanRory 2022-04-07T20:40:07Z

@mekuri - Thanks very much for writing such a detailed comment! As for feedback, I don't necessarily request a LOT of detail, that's just what I do when writing comments; perhaps I could edit my post clarifying that, but I don't think that is too important. Anyways, I'm now going to write MY thoughts on your game. Thanks again!

Turbo Toilet Tomfoolery! by RonanRory 2022-04-07T20:49:34Z

@kimberly - Apologies about the Google Drive thing; I realize only NOW that I do have a GameJolt account, so that means I should provide a link there as well. Thanks very much for reminding me! I'll get to your game soon, just give me some time!

Turbo Toilet Tomfoolery! by RonanRory 2022-04-09T20:48:43Z

@wouter52 - It's great to see a detailed response to my game! But yeah, I don't see myself joining another Ludum Dare for a while; I just don't handle the deadline well when it's getting close.

Now while it IS pretty cool to hear that you're following me, I've said that I'll be going on a hiatus, which wouldn't be the best time to follow someone. I'm not telling you to unfollow me, do whatever you want (within reason), but it'll be a long time before you remember that you followed me.

It's great to finally see someone who figured that I made the controls awkward on purpose! And I was originally thinking of making music, as one of my jam goals, but I wasn't sure what I could make that would fit the style, and your suggestion is a great idea! And I could *barely* come up with any of those this competition.

And to end this post, I thought that if you had to pee *REALLY* bad, I doubt you'd be sprinting full speed to the bathroom, you'd be doing the exact opposite in the form of *walking real slowly and awkwardly.* That's just an observation I made later on during the jam.

Anyways, I'm VERY glad that you enjoyed my entry, have a great day!

Turbo Toilet Tomfoolery! by RonanRory 2022-04-10T20:10:22Z

@luis-felipe-patrocinio - I guess what irks me most regarding lack of detail would be the level decorations; it just looks a bit *too* simple for what I wanted to do. Thanks very much for your feedback

@jozgames - Uh, I'm trusting Google Translate on this one. But wow! That's gotta be the harshest take on my controls yet, but it SURE is honest. Uh, thanks very much?

Also, I decided to take a look at your previous entries, and it is absolute SIN how low the Graphics category scores on them! It is truly amazing that you manage such detail in 3 DAYS! So yeah, I'm glad to have exposed you to this "atrocity" of controls (which was on purpose), thanks again.

Turbo Toilet Tomfoolery! by RonanRory 2022-04-13T21:03:30Z

@twistedhawk @khaotom - Thanks very much you two. It really is great to hear that!

Turbo Toilet Tomfoolery! by RonanRory 2022-04-14T02:03:51Z

@paulhocker - Aww, that's very sweet of you! Thanks so much, I definitely needed to hear something like that!

Turbo Toilet Tomfoolery! by RonanRory 2022-04-14T21:03:19Z

@proxy-games - I'm happy to hear you enjoyed my entry! Perhaps I could experiment with different artstyles, but I haven't been very good with getting around to learning art-related stuff.

But yeah, I've now fully realized that Ludum Dare just isn't the event for me. Honestly, I should just say that a "final post" isn't ACTUALLY going to happen; not to sound self-deprecating, but who's going to care that I'm gone from this site? I haven't had such an impact on people that me leaving would be an event in and of itself.

But I digress, I just start getting stressed out when the deadline nears. And even apart from that, well, I've already written my shame of having no idea whatsoever with this jam. And while that sucks donkey balls, what sucked even MORE donkey balls was the previous Ludum Dare. It's no competition (wait, what?)

It is a sight to behold, my tirade about my LD49 experience. It is a **seriously** ugly sight to see, and it can be seen on the very entry page! That is a VERY good representation of me at my worst, and what a deadline can turn me into in a worst-case scenario. Though this problem's also compounded with me wanting to *finish a game,* because I tend to have made plenty of progress by then, and I don't want to stop at that point. And so, after that experience, I absolutely **_LOATHE_ anyone who says:**

🤪 - *"Just make sure to finish something, *no matter WHAT!*"*

Yeah, I did that, and how 'bout you take a look at **the toll it had on my mental state.** Yep, absolutely-

NOTHING BAD THAT COULD HAPPEN DOING THAT!

Oops, I got a little distracted and started ranting. Apologies, it just means a lot to me. Thanks very much for your feedback, and I hope to the high heavens your future Ludum Dare endeavors end MUCH better than my previous one, as of typing this. Uh, I don't know a good way to send off this post, but I've said enough here. Have a good day.

Turbo Toilet Tomfoolery! by RonanRory 2022-04-21T21:10:57Z

@peace-of-cake-games - Eh, I did realize how superfluous it is to shove coworkers away, but I decided to keep it in anyways (it took some time to create, okay!). I'm most definitely glad to see you finally play my entry, and thanks very much for your feedback!

Let's see how our games fared in the end! Yours will beat mine, that's for certain!

Till the Cards Come Home by Lucas Guimaraes 2022-04-07T20:24:32Z

Hey, It's wonderful that you were able to submit something; I just wanna get that out first.

This game can certainly use a UI system so as to know how good/bad you're doing. There could also be some sound effects to break up the monotony. There should've been instructions somewhere, in a readme file, or the game itself, or even this page. The background doesn't loop very well, at least for me; the particle effects are pretty nice, however.

I just think this game's a little too simple. Again, good job on making something!

The Great Flood by cassowary 2022-04-14T00:50:16Z

Cool game, though I'm not personally a puzzle game kind of person. But that music sounds so wonderful it will be a mystery for the ages how one person did it within 2 days! I'm also not very much the poetry type of person either, but it's still cool to see you added that within the deadline as well.

Really good effort, like *enviously* good, kudos.

I was able to level 10 before stopping. Before that level however, I managed to find myself submerged in the water, yet *also* be standing on top of it:

Overheat by Dock Frankenstein 2022-04-13T00:10:27Z

It's a first-person platformer, it's okay. Not a fan of having to face the button to press it. And it's strange that after 2 levels, then there's this sudden story that leads to making a decision that doesn't really *mean* anything. This game could also use some more sound effects, and music could help as well. Though I'm being hypocritical regarding sound, as my entry ALSO suffered from lack of sound.

Also Overheating is really just an annoyance. All it does is just limit how much I can do in the game, and respawn me at a nearby checkpoint.

Sorry about being so negative, this game could use so much more content! Rework the Overheat system so that it doesn't limit your potential so much, make some more levels, introduce more gimmicks. Hell, maybe you can reward curious players with special abilities that you don't *need* in order to beat the game, just like the Mega Man X games! Maybe it's a little ambitious, but as I said, there's so much that can enhance this game! So much that the game needs!

It's great that you were able to submit a game anyway. I guess that's what matter ~~most~~ second most, after mental health, as I learned *the hard way* last Ludum Dare. It IS pretty cool to play through the test room for this entry! That definitely made me respect the work put into the player physics. Have a great day.

Icebreak by tylerstraub 2022-04-12T23:51:37Z

I'm not the chess kind of person, but the gameplay is pretty good! Nothing else to say, the graphics and sound are serviceable, you did a great job here! I was able to score 31,110 points.

Lumber Tracks by Black Flag 2022-04-18T00:20:06Z

This is a really clever idea for an entry! The train is unstoppable, but you can make good of the situation while you still can!

The graphics and music aren't bad, but nothing remarkable.

The gameplay loop is pretty good as well: knocking trees and crates in the way of the train. Though I *REALLY* wish there was a restart button, because it doesn't take long to fail. And when you do, you have to wait until the game ends, maybe "gameplay LOOP" wasn't the best way of describing it. It's a single experience, with an inherit time limit.

It's a bit strange at first, throwing the axe and then having to retrieve it, but there's something actually kinda satisfying about it. It being momentum based only served to bog down this mechanic. If I threw the axe at a standstill, it travels nowhere, and IF it hits a tree, it won't budge. If there HAD to be momentum-based throwing, at least give the player a good-enough throwing velocity by default.

What if I could chop down a tree at standstill? So that I'm not constantly going back and forth, throwing the axe, then retrieving it, rinse and repeat. Why even is it that bigger trees tip over, but they don't fall? Eh, that's more of a nitpick, how about the *real* problems I encountered?

This game has a *lot* of bugs, here's a list of how the one's I've found

#1 - Sometimes I try to hit one tree, but I end up hitting a DIFFERENT tree because that so happened to me in the axe's path. And usually it's a small tree that rotates so fast I cannot get my axe until it's stopped completely!

#2 - If #1 didn't happen, sometimes the axe *just goes RIGHT THROUGH the tree,* for whatever reason.

#3 - If neither of the above happened, the axe is so damn finicky about being picked up! I can hit a tree from one end, and end up having to go *all the way around the tree* to get the axe again, wasting time.

#4 - When hitting a box, the axe, around 50% of the time, will just get a mind of it's own and start flying off, and it usually goes just as fast as me. So I basically go right off the track, giving the train and it's psycho conductor plenty of time to go right on by!

#5 - For some reason, there's times when the axe refuses to be picked up until the tree's fully rotated and stopped. I've had this happen when the tree BARELY MOVED as well!

#6 - **I SOMEHOW MANAGED TO KNOCK A TREE _RIGHT BACK UP!_ AS IN, I HIT A TREE THAT WAS ALREADY KNOCKED DOWN, AND I _STOOD THE DAMN TREE RIGHT BACK UP!!!_** Good god, either that's a bug, or I'm so unlucky I defied the programming!

Those are all the bugs I've found, but this game also has some really annoying things as well. As... mentioned above.. tree's that are knocked down can still be struck, still have collision on them, meaning I still have to completely go around the tree to retrieve my axe. Though I just now thought, the train has to collide with the tree; I'm not too familiar with Unity, but could you perhaps use tags to make the tree collidable with the train, but NOT the player?

If you miss a tree, the axe travels FAR! Yet ANOTHER opportunity for the train to get ahead! Eh, what instantly came to mind as a 'solution' would be to use a raycast axe's direction to see if there's any trees. If there aren't, then the axe stops not far from the player.

Like what's mentioned in Bug #1, if you hit the top of a small tree, it'll rotate fast enough that you can't get the axe for basically *forever!* I'd like to say "make the axe bounce off a tree if it rotates fast enough", but that does NOT sound like an easy thing to do. Maybe you could find a means for that solution, but essentially, don't make the player wait so they can pick up the axe.

I'm starting to run the 4096 character limit, so I will wrap this up. This game has such a good idea, yet is held back by these bugs! It's still great that you made such a clever idea within 48 hours, though! But I'm wondering, CAN you save everybody? The most I can save is 70. I'd really hate it if you can't actually save everyone.

Sorry for such a long comment, and being so harsh. I do hope you've had a great Easter!

Snow Dude! by Zliebowitz 2022-04-14T01:59:40Z

This entry gets *REALLY hard,* I would argue it's too difficult! It's impressive to see how many levels this game has, but with it's **immense** difficulty, I was just wondering when it would *end.* I'm a minority in that I spend more than 3 minutes on a game, trying to reach it's conclusion; the problem there is that people aren't going to see a good portion of the levels, and if they do, they *SURE* aren't going to see it to the end with the difficulty.

Also, I cannot possibly envy you enough. I remember coming up with a similar "snowball propels itself, making it smaller" idea, but this is just SO MUCH BETTER! Mine was basically a prototype set in space where the entire screen rotated à la Sonic the Hedgehog. I knew after my time with this jam (couldn't come up with a *DAMN* idea for the life of me) that I would envy the other entries, but this one takes the entire cake!

Music's not bad at all, if a bit repetitive. The controls are alright, but clicking in the *opposite* direction to where I'm headed is rather awkward, leading to much frustration. I *VERY* much agree with @djtequila that an aiming reticle would make this game MUCH more palatable.

Graphics are fine.

Being so jealous of you probably shows how I think of your entry. You did a great job, and sure had a **_SIGNIFICANTLY_** better time than me! Bravo!

Fire Hazard by Fupi 2022-04-08T21:39:51Z

Like @nosleepjf , I'm *also* trying to comprehend how you managed to make a game THIS good IN SUCH A SHORT SPAN OF TIME!? I usually leave this for the end of my comments, but I'm gonna say it now: pat yourself on the back, I demand you! This is **PHENOMENAL!!** I decided to check your feed, and I had actually seen those earlier posts. I was *shocked* to find out that THIS GAME was what became of that little demo!

Though I'm a bit confused; is the story mode (web version) supposed to have only one gun, and you can't do anything against the other enemy types? I doubt that was intentional. But apart from that, the gameplay is just amazing. I knew this will get a high fun score when I seriously had a difficult time stopping!

To put this into perspective: I lasted 1007.94 seconds, and I had to MAKE myself stop!

Actually, that's the only problem I have; I think the game's *just a little* too easy. And I'm not sure how to fix that; I'm nowhere **_NEAR_** clever enough for such in idea in the first place, let ALONE improving upon it!

Oh, yeah, the graphics look nice as well. I'm surprised this entry wasn't already out of the Danger Zone when I got to it! I tend to be late to things.

I have nothing else to say.

DLAY's Buffet by BinaryPrinciple 2022-04-15T06:06:34Z

I guess that's one was to innovate! And a particularly hilarious way as well! The game's a pretty good experience, though a bit easy as you don't need to aim; I figure most everyone else had said that, so that isn't news to you. It's also a bit on the short side. The graphics and sound are nothing special, but they serve their purpose.

Cheers for managing to find a way to do the theme quite different!

Rifthoppers by Kimberly 2022-04-07T21:52:11Z

The game is certainly fun, but after enough time, the enemies just pile on you and constantly end the game. The upgrade system is nice, but the selection you're given doesn't vary too much. Most of the time it's either 'Home in on enemies' or 'Projectiles pierce through enemies'

The music's decent, and I think you all already know that sound effects could spice up the experience. Though there could probably have been 1 or 2 more enemy types. I can't really think of anything else, but there's a lot of ideas that a game like this can have; I may not follow the development, but there may be some real gold hiding in this.

Great work, and best of luck with the full version!

GRIDLAST by cakts 2022-04-09T00:37:09Z

This game looks so good I bet no one would guess it was made in 72 HOURS! **BY ONE PERSON!!**

I don't have much experience playing card games, but this was a mixture of frustrating AND fun. I was able to survive 8 waves max. As I'm typing this, I see @sasquatchbstudios's comment, and I agree with all of their points.

This is one hell of an entry, perfect for Ludum Dare's 20 year anniversary!

The Endless Junkyard by Snotax 2022-04-07T22:21:34Z

Well, I think I'll start with the bad things first:

I feel the gameplay could've been done better. I don't think the ships that dispense the trash should come in *faster* as the game goes on; you're already really slow at the start, so I think it should've stayed the same speed. Eventually you just *cannot do ANYTHING* about all the crud that piling up on you! I also think it didn't properly show my score at the end, just showing '0' as my total score.

I was surprised at how similar these issues were to my Ludum Dare 40 entry Shape Invasion. That also had the problem of objects piling up on you, the game dropping frames, and there being NOTHING you could do about it! The difference is that this is a Jam entry, it's in 3D, and it looks/sound orders of MAGNITUDE better than my LD40 entry!

As for the good stuff:

These graphics look REALLY damn good! Objects being outlined to show that they're highlighted is also a welcome addition. The music may be a little basic, but the sound effects are superb as well! This game sure has good presentation.

Good game, despite the problems. You all did a lovely job.

SensenCemetery by Wouter52 2022-04-07T21:18:52Z

The graphics are pretty good, and the jingle for when the Sensenmann closes in on you is great. Though I'm not really a big fan of this one, sorry. I guess my evasion stat is awful. I was able to evade for for only 154 meters, earning my 32nd place.

But from what the description says, it's a miracle you got something like this done! You've earned a pat on the back, but I can't do that through the internet... disappointing.

Sack Attack by Nate_Bit_Games 2022-04-08T22:54:45Z

This game is a throwback to a simpler time...

This game is incredibly goofy, very difficult, but also rewarding when you get a good rhythm going. I felt that the sound effects were rather obnoxious, however. There isn't that much more I can say. Well, it's a very good entry, just for the humor factor! Great job!

OVERCOME by Peace Of Cake Games 2022-04-06T21:29:17Z

Well, I feel silly now, as I didn't even realize the twist on the theme until I saw the other comments! I'm pretty much going to envy all of these entries because I couldn't come up with a good idea myself; but this isn't about me, of course.

Like the above comments, I felt the text was a little eye straining; personally, I didn't care much about the inclusion of profanity, but that's MY personal opinion. The player goes behind houses but not the gun, though that's a minor nitpick; my game certainly has sorting problems itself. And for some reason I find the sound effect for defeating anxiety hilarious.

Yeah, the boss fight overstays it's welcome, but the music during that fight, I found particularly interesting. I swear it's gotta be changing dynamically as it goes on! And I got hit 19 times.

Very nice little experience. Great job!

Untitled Oxygen Game by miraculousMelon 2022-04-21T21:33:05Z

Great idea for a game! Though at the beginning, I was a little caught off-guard at how I *actually* controlled in the game. I'm assuming that voice system is done with text to speech, which is a *VERY* great and clever way of utilizing it!

I think the progress bar could probably be differently colored to be more easily distinguishable amongst all the mayhem going on. And at one point I was pressing the space bar to repair a hole, and doing that *STOPPED* the progress meter; when I let go, it progressed automatically until it was complete, at which point it didn't do anything for me. I didn't play this entry too much, but that seems like a VERY quick way of ruining a potential high score for a player.

Despite that problem, this is a short-but-sweet entry. Great job on you all! Though it's unfortunate to see that your entry couldn't break past that Danger Zone barrier.

Well, I'll end this comment by saying that my high score was around 45.8 seconds, I think.

Somnipathy by Cyzaine 2022-04-13T00:30:23Z

Really good looking art in this entry. I kinda like how fittingly surreal this entry is, if that's even the correct word to use. I was able to place 28th.

This has got to be the most amount of people I've seen work on a single entry, and this is pretty good, though somewhat lacking in content; or maybe that's just MY standard of expectations not being met. Either way, great job from all of you!

Penguin Rituals by mmisspelling 2022-04-06T21:51:49Z

Wow... This music is *SERIOUSLY* atmospheric; seriously, that's an EASY 5 stars from me! Even though the graphics were rather simplistic. But the gameplay picks up that slack!

I'm a BIG fan of game progressions that involve repeated actions, so the orb challenges were very satisfying to me. And not to brag (even though I am), I was able to complete 2 of the orb challenges first try.

I type from my heart when saying this, you two did an ASTOUNDING job here! Absolutely wonderful game! And yes, I AM a curious little dude.

Hungry Hungry Bird by IanTheBee 2022-04-13T01:40:19Z

Hmm, I would post a comment here, but @papabirb beat me to it! Saying basically everything I would have! So yeah, I agree with them full stop.

Although I will add, that I feel the gameplay here is just a tad shallow. I just cannot last long enough for it to be worth it. I feel there should be things that could tip the scale *just slightly* in the players' favor. Plus, even though my entry suffers from the same thing I'm gonna say it anyway, there's too few levels. Maybe there could've been 6, or maybe even 9! But I don't know what the development was like, so that's probably asking too much.

Well, wouldn't you look at that, I ended up posting a full comment anyways! And *that's* why I don't make promises! So yeah, good work there, pal!

Oh, yeah, the only time I remember getting was 1:14 on the first stage. Have a good day.

Giraffe o'Clock by Kepsert 2022-04-09T00:07:46Z

I cannot state this enough: **THIS MUSIC IS _WONDERFUL!!!_** This is seriously GOOD MUSIC! The graphics, on the other hand, is quite humble. These graphics are nice and charming; though it's not exactly the most original style.

The levels are shockingly well-constructed! Many times I thought I'd made a mistake, only to find out that's where the game wants me to go! There's plenty of levels too, which definitely earns my respect. There were some tricky parts, but they were always manageable with the right approach. Though the dancing minigames are rather demanding in reflexes.

Now, I know for *certain* that this will be an unpopular opinion, but I do **NOT** enjoy the writing in this game.

Don't get me wrong, I do like me some self-awareness, but there's a limit for how self aware a work should be, and this game *just take is too far.*. Yes, I'm aware of the theme of Ludum Dare 50, don't beat me over the head with it! No, even taking the self-awareness into account, you're not clever for referencing the theme! Nearly everyone's done that! I wasn't a fan of the 'boomer' jokes later on either; all that's gonna do is make me groan.

And listen, *if you actively __TELL ME__ to rate your game high in the humor category, __NO!__* Don't make people rate a game, even IF you think it deserves it. Ultimately, this just comes off as an *extremely* low attempt at garnering ratings, and I honestly do not want to give it a high humor score.

Ok, now ALL of that was just **MY** personal opinion! Remember that, I implore you! Because apart from the writing, this game is **_REALLY GOOD!_** The graphics are charming, the music is **WONDERFUL,** and the gameplay is amazing, maybe with the exception of the dancing sequences. You all should be VERY proud, apart from *begging for high humor ratings.*

Apologies if my writing opinions are rather harsh; I just simply _cannot **STAND**_ stuff like that. Just have a great day, all of you; I don't wish ill on you all.

Bitboy by Proxy-Games 2022-04-14T20:31:08Z

You know, I've played entries that are very simple, they play it safe. I was expecting this to be the same thing, but you sure seemed to be aware of that and subverted said expectations.

I'm surprised at how well you nailed the animation of closing a window prompt! It's a minor thing, but I have a thing for minor things. I certainly wonder HOW you manage to conserve the game state after refreshing the page! I don't think I've ever seen that firsthand before, though I know there are other games that preserve states like this.

I do feel the sequence after the "deletion" was completed did overstay it's welcome. I think I spent more time going through that text than everything I did previously. Some of the text sounds in this game are a bit low-pitched as well.

But I certainly dig the MIDI-esque sound of the music here! That's ALSO a thing I have a thing for.

I have a pet peeve for people namedropping the Ludum Dare theme into their entries, and there is *kind of* one here, but the wording's changed enough so that I don't mind. It's likely just a me thing, but I approve of not so *overtly* inserting the theme into your entry, **ESPECIALLY** not the page description itself!

Also, those 3D barrels look *nice.*

Absolutely wonderful work you did here. Thanks for subverting expectations!

The End Is Coming by MOOOKS 2022-04-08T22:19:12Z

Well you were right, this certainly is Pong but cooler. I was surprised to find out that you made the music for this game! No offense, quite the opposite, in fact. I was able to score 174 points by the end.

Very good job for your first Ludum Dare! Certainly a lot better than my first go!

Under Performer by Allax 2022-04-08T22:39:31Z

I took me until the end of the game to realize I was getting the paper specifically to circumvent the stamp, I really like that detail! Though I wasn't so much a fan of mashing the space bar to GET the paper... And I had NO idea what to do during the computer minigame; though I actually assume that I was just being ignorant there. The cabinet game is juuust fine, though.

The tutorial text is also VERY difficult to read.

But it IS cool to see that you included cutscenes as well. I sure wish I could've flexed my artistic skills during this jam.. The musics pretty good as well! There's this air of humor around the game as well, like how you can just *slide blank papers on top of your slip* to keep yourself not-fired. That kind of absurdist humor is one that I approve of.

Really good first jam entry! Be proud of yourself!

Forest by StudioCherno 2022-04-12T23:05:38Z

I haven't seen much of your videos on the Hazel engine, but it's really damn cool seeing it in use for a Ludum Dare event! The graphics are really good looking as well! Though it's a little odd seeing a shadow for the gun but not the player; well, hey, it's still cool to see real-time shadows supported here!

The beginning was really good, but I'm not so sure about it becoming an endless shooter later. I agree with @caudatecoder on pretty much everything he said, alongside what @taaada said. They've basically said everything I would've, and more. They did my job for me.

Now this is where I'd congratulate you for managing to make this game within the deadline... but you made the entire engine yourself! Obviously THAT took *so much longer* than 3 days to make. It's incredible being able to try it out for myself with this game.

Also I really want to say this before ending this post, but I remember discovering your YouTube channel via the video on your Ludum Dare 24 entry Genesis. It's so cool to see you enter the competition again! Have a wonderful day, Cherno!

Persist Ant by rynsy 2022-04-12T21:45:44Z

Probably the best music I've heard thus far out of the entries I've played! That's getting a *VERY* high score from me. The graphics may be somewhat simplistic, but they're pretty good as well. The gameplay wasn't that great. That's the cliffnotes version; here's a more detailed review:

Gameplay

Quickly, I just wanna say that this was *completely* different from what I expected! I was thinking this would be a top-down game of some sort, so I wasn't prepared for it to suddenly become a fast-paced platformer!

Speaking of which, I liked how fast you move around in the beginning, but that speed doesn't lend well to the precision platforming you have to do in the second-half of the game. You pretty much **HAVE** to stop in your tracks to safely jump between each _crumbling block_ else you either hit the insta-kill blocks, or get smacked by the tractor. The player is basically expected to _slowly move fast,_ and that's where I flat out gave up on the original version.

Going to the updated version, I was glad to see that my jumps wouldn't just 'stop' for no good reason anymore, letting be get past the aforementioned platforming section. I do not like jumping on the ladybugs near the end, because quite a few attempts died there because *I slipped right off the ladybug onto an insta-kill block.* Yeah, you can still slip off platforms which just feels unfair. Also, sometimes you'll just get *stopped* when charging towards a worm, and later on in the game, that is a death sentence.

I feel the gameplay didn't get enough attention during the development, so unfortunately, this is getting a lower Fun rating.

Audio

But you sure poured a LOT of heart into this music! It's some damn good stuff, again, *the* best I've heard thus far! Now I'm not too familiar with composing music, so I can't really go into any more detail about it, but this is something to be proud of for *SURE.* Uh, so yeah, that's it for the music; well, I guess I could say, even though you told us not to take sound effects into account when rating this entry, I think the sound effects are a bit *too* quiet compared to the music.

Graphics

I do appreciate the inclusion of a beginning cutscene, and an ending screen. I'm not really a fan of the incredibly noticeable dithering going on with the sky background, but foreground elements look pretty good, if low resolution.

I guess you all were sponsored by Hostess, given how many Twinkies appear in this game! It also took me a bit to appreciate the albeit simple name of *Dr. Salt,* lovely. I looked at the game a few times writing this, and I like how there's an animated worm in the apple at the start.

Also:

ohmygod!.png

Is that what I think you're referencing? Good lord you're all so *crude!* The name *Bootysmack Interactive* and then this! What in the heck!

Beebs Bump by Beebster Games 2022-04-06T20:42:23Z

I didn't have any problems running this, unlike some others here; apart from that, this game is pretty good. I was a little bit confused at first, but I got the rules down in a short amount of time. Spending tokens for added score is pretty unique, at least to me; I feel with some additions, this could be a really intriguing game. The music's relaxing, though I feel it's a little on the short side.

Good job on making the Compo! Oh, and before I forget, here is my score:

myScore.png

Battery Buisness by Smoofy 2022-04-09T00:45:32Z

It may be a basic game, but it works. I've never seen an entry made in Scratch before, which makes this quite an interesting experience for me. Though I do share @sodoj's sentiment about asset usage. Good on you for opting out of the audio category!

It's not easy to make a game that fits the theme in such a short timespan, and it's always impressive when someone so young manages to submit an entry. You did a good job!

Not Enough Time: The Game by Marianoa213 2022-04-14T01:18:46Z

At first, I though I was just hitting completely invisible screen boundaries, but then I realized that the walls are slightly darker than the background.

This entry will certainly earn point in the Humor category what with the *entire player sprite* spinning around to aim. I can basically cartwheel around everywhere! However, it will take a hit in the Fun score. I assume the zombies spawn at predetermined coordinates, and that means that you can just get sniped out of **nowhere** prematurely ending your game.

I also think the inclusion of a timer to limit your playtime, and to incorporate the theme, is a little bit sloppy. I feel there should be a more logical reason to kill the zombies other than extending the timer of the nuke inside my chest that kills me.

Perhaps you have some sort of checkpoint, something that you want to protect from the zombies. Hell, perhaps it could actually *BE* a nuke that you have to prevent from detonating! Or maybe you've gotta prevent the zombies from entering the houses in the neighborhood, but of course, they'll get in there anyway.

It's good, but a little barren. I was able to score 1538 points at the end.

Wreck at Delta Blue by Alex Stewart 2022-04-12T22:24:04Z

The ship interior looks alright, and it's pretty cool to now know that Godot 4 is available, even IF it's still in alpha right now. The controls did take a bit to get used to, but they're okay. But I don't really know how this fits with the theme, you just collect 10 samples and that's it. And that ship sound effect get grating FAST!

It's great that you could submit something, but I think this doesn't have enough meat in it's bones.

Dave's Diet by ASize7Shoe 2022-04-06T21:03:12Z

I envy you, because a could've come up with an idea half as interesting as this! Though I'd agree with @syafire that the controls are rather sensitive, I also agree that the music does manage to fit in with an idea so wacky.

And as it turns out, I'm not good at avoiding Dave, that unhealthy prick. Eh, I guess I'm not really above him. Though I was able to completely leave the house and fall out of the world.

Very good work on your part!

LD41 — Combine 2 Incompatible Genres

Elite Beat Zombygons by Archimagus 2018-04-27T02:32:41Z

MAN! This game is so much better than I expected (no offense) I found it to be a little bit frustrating at times, and The Infectioning (or level 2) was cheap in difficulty compared to others.

As for the music, all I can say is HOLY JEEBUS! THE last thing I was expecting from this was a song with LYRICS, in an LD game! Also, on a somewhat unrelated note, this game is a perfect example of a question I've had with games like this: How do you manage to get objects to 'react' to the music, let alone making that a core gameplay mechanic!

I think this is a mindblowing game music-wise for an LD game. Game-wise however, I think it's an okay game. Rhythm games aren't exactly my cup of tea (I don't even like tea) but still, great job!

Harvest Doom by Fiote 2018-04-27T03:22:30Z

I apologize, but I didn't play this for very long (compared to the entries I've played to this point) When I saw your post, I knew I was in for some trouble when you said that your entry was both "A cross between harvest moon and a tower defense game" and "its pretty hard too" (no offense)

I have NEVER played Harvest Moon, and I will most CERTAINLY suck at such a game if it's both a Tower Defense game, and "pretty hard," and that's coming from the person who MADE the game (alongside @brendan-toy who did the art and music)

But, anyways, the game! I might not have played the game for very long, but here are my opinions:

I think that the graphics and music are great! But, as much as I hate to say it, that's the only thing I like about the game.

I honestly found it a bit strange to just hit something as soon as you walk into it. Which made things silly when I kept attacking my own home while going up to it. And the time limit is VERY restricting considering how they start in literally SECONDS! I feel like it should've been longer than 40 seconds max. Also (and this won't be the last time it happens) the amount of things you seemingly need to remember in the introduction made the game intimidating before it even started!

I apologize again, for this negative (and long!) review. I know that is to be expected of feedback, but still. Also, I stopped playing it after 5 minutes, thanks to me being intimidated by the mix of genres I'm not familiar with. But, in the end, nice game!

Slime World by Beetrootmonkey 2018-04-27T02:48:13Z

I didn't read the description, or at least, not MUCH of it, thus not realizing this is supposed to be like a board/card game. The graphics are pretty good, like, that title screen was the best thing I've seen in years (sarcasm)

I'm not gonna go harsh on this game, as it's unfinished (But, honestly, I NEVER try to be harsh on any game, no matter HOW little fun I had with them) But, as an unfinished game, you sure did (and accomplished) MUCH more than what I tried to make!

Here's my entry:

Oh, wait a minute! I didn't submit an entry, oh nooooo!
