Simple concept but the execution is quite well. The flash effect when a shape is destroyed is a little bit excessive, but other than that good game!

The reason why I made the flashing effect was because I wanted to polish the game. Even thought I will admit that when you use a bomb, things can get haywire VERY quickly. Anyways, thanks for the feedback. :)
Fun concept! It's fun and addictive. I'm looking forward to your next project xD
The background is a huge pain on the eyes, but the idea and premise is nice
Fun Game but the background hurts the eyes
First of all: congratulations on finishing the jam. I know that it's not easy to work with in such a small time, and that it's not easy to make music if you don't have experience with it.
My two cents: I think that the game would be a lot better with a better pacing. Right now, it gets repetitive too quickly, and I think that's because there is no sense of challenge. Maybe if the shapes spawned faster, the room was smaller and/or you got damage when touching shapes, the challenge would be greater and the game would be more exciting. I only played for some minutes, so If something like that already happens after some time playing, sorry, my bad.
Sorry LD was stressful - congratulations on powering through and submitting something!
Honestly I thought it was going to be real rough to play, given your description of the event. So I was pleasantly surprised. There is some good stuff here!
My favorite part was the projectiles, and how they have an arc and bounce around a bit. This was WAY more fun than simply having a normal straight-shot gun. I enjoyed bouncing a bunch of projectiles into an area by banking them off walls, to clear out a bunch of shapes. The over-the-top particle systems were fun, too.
You hit all the checkboxes: music, art, sound FX, some menu transitions and a story.
There's even all this attention to detail. Like the way the menu items pop larger on mouseover. And the way the gun starts on the ground and I pick it up, instead of me just starting with it. A surprising amount of nice little touches for a first LD!
My score was 2001 and here is a screen shot right before I died: https://imgur.com/6B1NidI
Shoulda used more bombs!
Anyway, nice work. Sorry LD was a hassle.
Thanks for all the feedback everyone! I was not expecting people to be this kind on Ludum Dare (thanks Youtube commenters >.< ).
Cool game ! And contrary to what you say in your description, the music is really cool ! I found also that you take to make a game that is satisfying when shooting/destroying things ! Great job ! But ... Maybe I missed something ... But I did not understand how to die x) Despite that, that is quite fun, but really repetitive because of the lack of a goal ^^'
You made a really good job - moreover with a nightmare which disturbed you x) - and you can be proud of you ! Keep coding :)
Oh the 'mini-nightmare' didn't DISTURB me, but it sure did stress me out ever so slightly
That's a nice entry - the first one, right? I do have a question: have I suffocated because of the timer, or was I able to prevent it somehow?
Yes, it was the timer.
"I didn’t even put on a shirt for most of the jam in order to save time" - Smart.
Congratulations on successfully entering a working game into the jam. This is my first LD too. :)
@cubeeo - I laughed so much upon seeing your comment, I just found it quite silly. Also, cool, this is your first game jam as well? I'll check out your game now :)
Neat game. The shooting felt surprisingly satisfying and the sound effects and the music work quite well. I love the no-nonsense straight to the point intro, but I felt like the game progressed a bit too slowly after that. Obviously that's a good thing for learning the game, but on subsequent playthrough that means you have to sit through the boring parts in the beginning, which makes the idea of replaying the game really unattractive. Another probem I have with the game is that you don't have control over the jumping. How long you hold down the button doesn't matter for the height, which doesn't feel good. Here's a short video about how to make a better jump: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7KiK0Aqtmzc
I feel like I'm spamming this video at this point but jumping in video games is something I'm really (oddly) passionate about.
Apart from those things, the game is pretty well put together.
Had some fun with this. The game is well made and the gun and bomb are very satisfying to use. Changing the color of the background every new game is a cool touch. Great entry, congratulations!
Cute little game, I enjoyed playing. It was nice that the shapes would shatter in several pieces. Because the background has a different color each time, the first time the text was hard to read. I didn't really get when and how many new shapes would appear. The score didn't seem to reset when I played again. Sometimes the bullets would change directions even before it would hit a wall. Also, in the beginning I needed 5 bullets to destroy a shape, and later only 2 or 1. I didn't get why. :)
Oops, I overslept, so now I'm gonna respond to the posts all at once:
@banan - I do realize that the game progresses too slowly and that it isn't very replayable. I didn't think to include varying jump heights in this game, also, I find it silly that you linked me a Unity tutorial for jumping. I actually used a different engine for this game (I regret not using/learning GameMaker beforehand), I WISH I knew Unity well enough to make a game like this.
@vasco-rodrigues - Thanks! I've noticed how this is the only comment mentioning the background color (In a positive light at least). I don't mean any offense to anyone saying that.
@papaver - I wouldn't really call this game "cute" but I'm okay with that. I'm sorry that the text was hard to read thanks to the background. Also, I can't believe I didn't mention this in the description, but the more shapes that you destroy, the easier it is to destroy them. Now that I think about it, that seems a little contradictory to the theme, but the frequency that the shapes spawn by that point makes up for it. Also, I don't know what would cause a bullet to just change direction BEFORE it hits a wall. And..
OH JEEBUS!! I FORGOT TO RESET THE SCORE WHEN THE GAME ENDS!!! DAAAAAARRNIIIIIITT!!!!
Anyways, thanks for the feedback everyone!
@ronanrorry Don't worry about the fact that it's a Unity tutorial - it's the logic that's important and that stays the same for all engines.
Hey Ronan! Here's a little Let's Play of my experience with Shape Invasion :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YoYb4Qywy04
Cool game! I included it in my Ludum Dare 40 compilation video series, if you’d like to take a look. :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CFjCDu50TQs
