How anyone questions this fitting the theme is beyond me. This was funny. My pet died while I was busy protecting houses from paratroopers.

Hover Burner by TimBeaudet 2017-12-19T19:54:12Z

My only complaint is the cover pic - it suggests to me that the game will be at least 2.5D, if not full 3D. That is all. Very well done.

There's no game at the itch page right now. Did you fix a bug and then forget to make the game public again?

ARCADE OVERFLOW by Remco 2017-12-17T17:03:46Z

I still haven't played your game yet, but I was watching someone play your game... part way through, I found myself thinking, "your (the player's) tetris strategy sucks - you're the worst tetris player ever" and then I realized, "oh, yeah, there's other games going on - I guess you gotta keep pac-man alive" lol

Loot & Looter by NickZangus 2017-12-08T21:08:26Z

I was playing windows version, and the throwing function does not work. I tried playing it multiple times in different ways, in a window and such. The player makes the throwing arm movement, but nothing ever gets thrown.

Loot & Looter by NickZangus 2017-12-08T22:54:27Z

@nickzangus Yes, it works now. And, now that I play the fully functioning version, I realize the prior windows version had multiple bugs - like camera direction movement doesn't work like it does here. This version seems to be totally bug free and playable.

It looks great and is a worthy accomplishment. It feels tough, but not too tough. (Some games are so hard that I don't want to try them again.) This one, I do want to try again, and I think I can do better... even if that's not the case. Well done.

Splotch 2 by Sebastian Lague 2017-12-10T11:04:21Z

I like what you got here, for sure, so I'm just trying to help you improve this, because this is totally something I'd enjoy. I can't even imagine the insanity of where these levels go. Currently, I'm only up to level 3, and I already have a big issue - you don't show the goal point at the beginning of the stage. Take level 3 for example - the only way to see the goal (where I'm supposed to finish) is to first get both yellow squares. So, I don't even know what my goal is until I do that. I think that's the number one addition I'd put into this game - tell me where the goal is - otherwise, I wander lost until I learn where the goal point is. And, I can't really start strategically playing a level, in any real way, until I know where the goal point is.

That, and the aforementioned undo button, because I was building something on level 3, something along the lines of this:

Splotch2.png

But, guess what, I had the goal blocked, without even knowing it, because I didn't know where the goal was yet.

P.S. I just found a bug. On level 3, if you emulate the set-up I currently have in this picture:

Splotch2Bug2.png

The ball will go THROUGH the black solid UPWARD in direction of the red arrow (that I added). It takes about 45 seconds from entry, in this configuration.

Sweet game though.

Cherry Creek by SecondDimension 2017-12-08T02:51:57Z

So, here was my experience: I started on the easiest mode, figuring I'd work my way up. And, you know what, I was struggling. Due to the nature of this being LD and some games not working, I returned here to make sure the game was fully functioning. The comments led me to believe it was, so I returned to the game, this time I skipped to the next hardest level. And I was able to beat it. Then, next round, I got it fast. So, I don't know what was going on for me the first time round on the super easy level, but maybe make that one simpler, because I wasn't acclimated to the game yet. I don't know. Anyway, I enjoyed the game. The mood was nice, with the audio making for a pleasant experience. It was an enjoyable puzzler. I'd agree about adding a button or something to go to the menu. Also, my impression is that "Next Level" does not take you to next difficulty. So, if you're playing and want to go to the next difficulty, there's not really a way to do that, since there's no way to get back to the menu. Someone above said there's a pause button, but I've looked (on the web version) and can't find it. There's no way for anyone to be able to know they need to press P. But, good job. I only mention those little tweaks because it's a game worth playing, and those little improvements can help quite a bit. Also, leaderboard stuff doesn't work, fwiw.

Oh, and I took a picture of my third try, when I finally went fast :P

Nabi by Amir Bayareh 2017-12-05T05:52:19Z

Anyone can make a game that follows a theme. There's tons of games here where the game is short-lived because the more you have the harder it is. Your game is different from those tons of other games. This game shows intelligent creativity. You include the function of it getting harder, but, necessarily so, you also include the function of relieving that. That's the important part, that so many of these entries are missing.

Also, we're creating a game in a short time period, so there's a limit to how much one can create, but you also used this to your advantage. I don't know how many levels you've created (I've only played it once through so far), but the one level I played plays like multiple levels, because you have to keep going through it. In other words, you have one level that feels like many levels. This plays perfectly into your hand - the constraints of time to build it. The build plays perfectly into the theme - in a way that's not remotely annoying. The title of the game is even perfect. And, I didn't need to know any controls. I just pressed a couple buttons early on and figured it out.

Making games is exactly what you should be doing. Congratulations. This is brilliant. Creativity is using negative parameters to your advantage, and you've done that in all aspects here. This is a real game. Not a real game for something made in a weekend, but a real game. I'm glad I found it. I will definitely play it more. Thank you for creating this and sharing it with the world.

Nabi by Amir Bayareh 2017-12-05T06:24:29Z

Don't thank me. If there's any justice, you'll get the encouragement from the results when they come out, because this game deserves to be ranked highly. Period.

Monolith by Sir Magic 2017-12-08T20:51:32Z

I had the same issue as rixium, where I disappeared at one point.

The sheer look of this proves you have some skills. The fact that everything has a shadow version in the background is wild. So, the look and aesthetic appeal of it is great. However, I wish you'd put more of those skills to use in the gameplay.

One Final Task by HuvaaKoodia 2017-12-13T08:52:14Z

First of all, that give up button that you added is very necessary, because you can start a new level with new objects and not know their "rules" so you need to learn the rules of the new objects. I just played the level with the double yellow arrows - amazingly, I beat it on my first try. I say amazingly because I'm still not quite sure of the full scope of rules for those (just from playing that one level with those objects).

So, when I got to the final level, which had double arrows, along with everything else, it was a bit overwhelming. I did not beat that final level. However, I did get "An End" fwiw.

If you were to expand this, or whatever, I think it'd be good to have multiple levels to learn and get acclimated to new object mechanics. Early on, it's fine. But, the further you get, I'd say more levels per new object. Also, I was never sure about the difference or non-difference between regular boxes with different stickers. For example, I know I "broke" one of the fragile boxes, but I'm not sure that affected the outcome. I don't think it did, as I still progressed. I still don't understand the full rules of the double yellow arrows. I'd say starting with the stop signs, give a couple levels to get acquainted to those. And then a few to get used to the double arrows before throwing it all together, maybe. It does get overwhelming at the end. It kinda hurts the brain a little, and I like puzzles. I liked this early on too, but... I don't know, I just didn't quite get the rules of the double yellow arrow. I think it was a bad thing that I beat the first double yellow arrow level on my first try, cuz it didn't let me get used to them, at all. I was actually surprised when I won that level and progressed.

Farming Sim LD40 by pebkac 2017-12-08T08:04:43Z

Okay, when I first clicked into this game, I thought something was wrong, like the graphics were missing. I thought I was seeing the process that was supposed to be going on behind the scenes - but THAT'S THE GAME! So, I was skeptical, but now I'm playing the game in the background right now. I don't really have to do anything, since I bought all the auto-stuff. There's something funny about this game.

On first glance, it seems like there's absolutely no reason to like this game, but the TRUTH IS that there are TONS of games out there that are essentially exactly this, only with graphics and sound. So, I think that's what is great about this.

That being said, I'm not gonna play it more than once, but I've been playing in the background while typing this whole comment, am currently at 41,000 funds and 12 cows and 2100 + ticks and counting...

The name on the itch page "Less is More" is appropriate, even if the name is different here. I can confirm that all the auto stuff is working fine for me. Up to 46,000 funds now.

I like how the cows live to be about 700 years old. And the simplicity of the text telling you what you did is funny.

Hold on sec... I'm going make a screenshot of my current progress and post it here...

Here we go:

Alien Crab in the Rotormaze by jebouin 2017-12-10T05:48:49Z

I'm glad I found this gem. When you have a limited amount of time to build worlds, it's very beneficial if you can build one world and re-use it in new ways, as you're fully aware, because this game is proof of that. You re-used the same space in smart and efficient ways. And, this game does get difficult, but it progresses nicely to that. It starts rather calm, and eventually builds to a hecticness. I liked the puzzles. My initial idea for the jam was something involving pipes, but I realized I'm not skilled enough to pull it off yet. So, this also gave me some ideas. So, in addition to being an enjoyable game, this also might prove to be an inspiration. Very well done. You should be proud.

ICE RINK RALLY by japes 2017-12-17T15:27:46Z

This was an enjoyable little game. I haven't seen anything like this on here. I feel great about my time of 35.45! - I'm in 10th!!! It offers a challenge, without being too difficult. When you play this game, you want to play again, and try to do better. Nice simulation of ice. Well done.

Prinsen Gulden by King Kujito 2017-12-05T03:21:20Z

This is the type of game that I look at and am immediately impressed by the audio / visual of it. It makes me want to play the game. Aesthetically, it's great, and to be a compo done in under 48 hours makes it more impressive. But, the game play was an issue for me. I wasn't able to experience the game for long because of that.

Prinsen Gulden by King Kujito 2017-12-07T01:28:34Z

"@Cubeeo could you go into more detail please?"

I couldn't progress very far at all. For example, there was a point where I needed to perform consecutive wall jumps back to back (so it seems), but I struggled just to pull off one wall jump, let alone 3 consecutively. And, this was very early on in the game.

After reading a fair portion of the comments above, it seems there's a common theme about the gameplay being too difficult too early on.

I like the look of it. Your screenshot there drew me into the game. Unfortunately, even though I played easy mode, I did not survive long, so was not able to enjoy your game for long. The second time I played, I thought I was gonna beat the guy, it seemed like I had him down to a sliver of life, but, alas, I was no little Mac. :(

Bearhalla by madjackmcmad 2017-12-08T20:21:07Z

I played on a keyboard. It wasn't the best functionality, but it was fully playable. (I've encountered some games here that were downright unplayable on a keyboard.) I agree with your comment:

"I don’t think patching a control change really is in the spirit of “small bug fixes only”" and I respect that.

While I was playing, where the score is, at fairly frequent intervals it said "Scoreboard blocked." At first, I thought it was just waiting to update scores until the next time it did that function, but after a bit I realized, it definitely wasn't adding to my score nearly enough. I know this because by the time I realized this, I'd played the game a few times, and my final attempt was by far my best attempt - I was fighting snakes and stuff - but my score was very low, compared to prior plays. So, don't know if that's some kind of bug.

But, this is a unique and different and fun game, and I highly appreciate that. The shadows and lighting comment and your response made me laugh. You are, in fact, not a wizard. In fact, I don't think shadows and lighting would be a good use of your limited time and resources. I'd rather you focus on fun, like you did. Great job! Nice innovation and allocation of resources to the proper aspects of the gameplay.

Hunt Together by Gao Ming 2017-12-07T06:38:44Z

This is lovely. The character is great, from the visuals down to the movements, and the storyline. I like how you integrated the text early on in a fun and engaging way. For example, I like how she says the bit about 3D - from the books. It all helps set a lovely atmosphere. And, as for the 3D - it speaks for itself. The whole atmosphere is wonderful. And you helped us learn the mechanics really well before throwing the hard stuff at us. And the VR game arriving was nice. You understand story, and use it well. Also, I just realized this is a compo, and not a jam. Even more amazing.

CARnage by Rolle 2017-12-06T19:46:03Z

Ha. Nice. The first time around, I didn't know what I was doing, because I don't like reading directions. Then, I figured out how to play, and the next three matches, I still didn't beat a single other car. But, you know what, I stuck with it, and on my next attempt, I think I came in second. Found a nice little shortcut too, if you have NOS. Nice. This is legitimately playable, hard enough to make you want to try again, but not so difficult that you stop. Also, it's fun. Good work. Thanks for this.

Now, I'm trying to see how many people I can kill!

Brick Racer by nekoballs 2017-12-06T01:19:40Z

yeah, I'm getting the same 404 error for itch link

Brick Racer by nekoballs 2017-12-06T18:55:04Z

I'm glad you fixed the link, because this was surprisingly enjoyable. Obviously, this game is not about the graphics and audio, but it's got real playability, and I think that's important. Too many games with this theme make the game super difficult, with no option to make it easier; the games that succeed give you a pressure relief valve on difficulty, which you did. Also, to anyone above saying the game is too easy, they obviously didn't try to go fast enough. I'm saying this as the person who just took the 2nd spot on the leaderboard, with a time of 39.147s. It's easy if you don't try to go fast, sure. But, that's the point, you want to get to the end as fast as possible. This was well done. I think it was smart to focus on gameplay mechanics over graphics and audio. Not that it looks bad, plus that can be improved later. In short, it's a simple, fun game. It was difficult to close out of the game, at the end, however.

Piggle Puzzle by fractalsunrise 2017-12-06T06:31:04Z

Frankly, I'm stuck on level 3, and since it's titled, "You can't save them" I came back here to make sure you can actually advance beyond level 3. From the comments above, it seems there are at least 9 levels... but I just can't figure out level 3. Level 1 and 2 were easy, but now I keep ending up in a piggle pile! I like the concept. We'll see if I figure this out - back to try again.

Traffic Troubles by TheOZoneBE 2017-12-21T00:50:24Z

I also was not a fan of the music. Granted, it's about on par with the type of music I would make, if I made my own. The mouse click location was a full two tiles off (at least)- one vertically and one horizontally. So, I just filled the entire screen with roads, and then did nothing else (since I wasn't going to be able to accurately place them anyway). Never upgraded roads (I'm pretty sure - never intended to, at least) - just filled the screen with roads, and let it go. Here's the end result:

TrafficTroubles.png

As you can see, without any strategy at all, I beat previous commenters who were actually strategizing, and paying attention to clutter or traffic. I did none of that - just spammed roads from the onset, until the screen was full. So, unfortunately, I think the scope of the project was too big, resulting in it not being refined and polished in a way that would prevent these things.

Blob Story: Cave Rescue! by Funske 2017-12-06T22:23:26Z

When I come across a game with zero ratings, feedback and all that, I start out a little skeptical. But, you have a playable game here. There are some impressive elements. I like how you get more bullets when the enemy numbers increase. Ultimately, I was never able to figure out how to "reduce my energy" which I guess would bring more light into the room, so I ended up, eventually, in a pitch black room, where I couldn't see a single thing, but it took awhile to get to that stage. There seems to be a minor glitch where the text boxes won't disappear for awhile after the pink blobs talk to you.

Overall, I was pleasantly surprised.

Loot Drop by Snowdrama 2017-12-05T05:02:50Z

Are you sure you made the game public on itch (windows version)?

Wall Run by R3L0ad1 2017-12-07T20:10:27Z

Congratulations! I played your game and early on in my experience it seemed a little glitchy (spacebar not working properly) but the more I played it, the more I was able to overcome issues. Like, I guess the little green plants were something I wanted to avoid, which I didn't know at first, but once I learned to avoid those, that helped.

The fact that you have a shop and it works is amazing! You probably know this, but when you buy something in the shop, it falls through your shopping basket. But, it purchases the item. So, I bought three items. The last item I bought - the headstart - I'm not sure if it registered as me buying the thing, or if that one worked or whatever. But, I also bought the super jump, and boy that was a super jump!!! I jumped the wrong way, and actually ended up ON TOP of the LAVA WALL, which was funny.

But, it's pretty cool. You've created a game that you can play, and gather some coins, and then buy upgrades, and play again, and potentially improve. And it's 3D! Impressive.

I didn't know we still had that by Papaver 2017-12-14T02:40:39Z

The title and concept makes perfect sense; I think everyone can relate to it on some level. Your game also fits the theme quite well.

This game's a bit difficult. First play-through, I'm acquainting myself with the keys. On the third try, I beat level 1. Then, I go to level 2, and the directions are gone. Unfortunately, I still didn't have the best grasp on the keys. I needed the directions to still be there. Heck, even with the directions, I sometimes had trouble - pressing the wrong directional key.

PullPals by eric-lathrop 2017-12-07T04:49:13Z

This is an all-around great game. It's difficult, but not in a way that is unplayable. I love the audio. It compliments the look. I feel like anyone any age could enjoy this. This is unique, well crafted and innovative. Excellent job!

S - The Game by Stadoblech 2017-12-17T15:56:58Z

My game featured an "O" and not an "S" so it was impossible to hook it around anything - just kidding. Seriously though, my one complaint (and there's really only one complaint) is when you have to wait for the timed circle to become passable, because you have to hook the one below it first. And then, you mess up, and the timing is such that you have to wait every single time. But, this is a clever, meditative puzzle game. I applaud thee.

The weighty island by frederikja163 2017-12-10T02:43:47Z

Once I got acclimated to the movements, there was something kind of zen about this experience. The sound effects and music went a long way toward that. I didn't really notice my player getting slower. In retrospect, I wonder if you can have an unlimited inventory, and that's how the player gets slower, but I assumed I was limited to five slots, so I strategically kept my items low. Anyway, nice work. By way, when you click on info for the stone, the description says "log" not stone - it has the log description.

Six by CodeChomper 2017-12-08T21:42:45Z

I like puzzle games. This was a different looking puzzle game. I liked the 3D look. Early on, when I learned that I was going to have to program these steps, I was concerned this was going to get tedious and annoying and frustrating. But, it never did. In fact, six was successfully recycled. Even the final level only took me like 5 tries, I think. (First try, I immediately got sawed in half).

Six.png

I saw you said you wanted to continue with this after the jam, so here's my thoughts on that. I think it might be difficult to expand beyond the levels you have now without it becoming tedious and annoying and frustrating. It never got to that point here, with the number of levels you have, but I can imagine, if you have more levels and they get harder, it will be hard to prevent that from happening. I think that will be your biggest obstacle to consider. But, good luck. Well done.

Factory Panic by Chronosv2 2017-12-08T23:41:52Z

This is a nice game. I like the various decisions you give the player. There was one play-through where I just tried to upgrade everything from the get-go, but that didn't work out so well. Lol. It's a good take on the theme without making the game impossible. I'm curious to see what kind of scores people are getting. Here's mine:

You have to be so absurdly fast in the beginning that one might be inclined to think the game is bugged or broken.

While I was playing, I couldn't help but wonder if this was a study on where people were inclined to put the wind turbines, analyzing the whole "not in my backyard" mentality.

Anyway, it's a good beginning to a game. It could totally be a fully functioning game if you expanded on it.

Friendly Dungeon by dawn 2017-12-06T22:02:01Z

I didn't read any of description before trying this game. So, when I was first playing, I was just thinking that you go around collecting all the coins, without any issues. It took awhile, but then, the lava started... and it moves slow, but... this game gets hard. So, I'm glad I stuck with it.

Hungry Dino by nax_89 2017-12-22T14:35:09Z

Cute game. Some of the text can be a little difficult to read. Having already played 'Alien crab in the Rotormaze' (and some other @jebouin games) I thought jebouin creating a more challenging level sounded very jebouin (which in itself is interesting, because I never encountered jebouin before LD40.)

Hatformer by Stevie Bushman 2017-12-14T00:37:41Z

I liked the dynamic aspect of the game - how the blocks changed. While I appreciated the humor of the abundance of achievements "You walked, have a hat" or whatever, the actual presentation - text all over the screen - really cluttered things up. Personally, I preferred the game "Oh No! Zombies" approach to the same idea of excessive achievements - they filled the screen, but on the periphery. But, this is nice. A little difficult to keep track of all the changing parts. Anyway, have a hat!

Marty the Hatted by PyrotheFlamy 2017-12-09T22:08:45Z

Hi @pyrotheflamy, I'm glad you powered on and were able to submit a game for the competition. I loved your bullets and their effects. They look great. Shooting is fun. Also, I had no problems with the functionality of the way the shooting works, like some others have mentioned. Didn't even cross my mind as an issue, until I read the comments above. And, the thing about comments is, since I had absolutely no issue with that, I would've never even thought to mention it. The only reason I'm mentioning it now is because I read the comments, and wanted to let you know there are people who had no problems with the shooting functionality. In fact, shooting your gun was more fun than shooting most of the weapons in this competition. That probably stems from the creativity of using left over resources. That's what creativity is - having limited resources, time, and or switching your entire game idea, but finding a way to make it work. Good job.

P.S. I respect your integrity regarding not making enhancements after the competition deadline is over.

Horny Bunny by Thomas FUentes 2017-12-04T23:14:21Z

I'm seeing these comments talking about multiple levels and beating the game and I'm wondering, how the heck did you advance through multiple levels and beat the game? Did I miss something?

Cursed Knight by Particles GameStudio 2017-12-06T03:56:14Z

You have a unifying aesthetic to this game - the audio and visual work well together, creating a pleasant mood. Whether I went to the left or the right, I fairly quickly came to an area that I could not jump far enough across to continue.

Lamattractive by Pandanym 2017-12-07T03:40:14Z

I love the title; the story-line concept is great. It's a cute little game. Maybe make easy mode a little easier.

Actually, I'm not sure what the difference in the difficulty modes is exactly, but I ended up performing the best on hard mode.

Bits by GeroX 2017-12-13T04:16:20Z

Congratulations on your first LD; this is my first one too. This is kind of a difficult game. I definitely wasn't ready for the different types of inputs required. I definitely felt a sense of the theme - with the more different types of inputs required, and with the bits needed. Your game has a consistent look and sound to it. Nicely done.

Santas Unwanted Helper: Reindeer Revolution by ponker 2017-12-19T21:10:10Z

This game wisely used pressure relief valves - both in the form of dumping presents and getting candy - to prevent the player from becoming too slow. And it incorporates choices and strategy in the process. Well done.

Ninja Guyden by Dioinecail 2017-12-19T16:55:43Z

So, this looks nice, and there's some interesting visuals / characters here. But, I don't know if this was designed with a different keyboard in mind (I'm using qwerty), because between the A/D to move, the J/K to jump/roll and the right mouse button to use the sword, I don't have enough hands for that, assuming I can get to the top to fight the boss.

It was definitely helpful for me to read comments here, because this is where I learned of the TRIPLE JUMP. Also, for future players, it might be relevant to know you can kind of do INFINITE JUMPS if you're against a wall. That being said, I still couldn't get to the top - too many arms grabbing me.

Slime's Guardian by Pepaco 2017-12-04T21:53:38Z

As I expect of many of the games from this theme, it was difficult; that's kind of the caveat of the theme. And the difficulty is making the theme work without making it too difficult. For me, I'm not very good at your game, yet... I tried putting guards on one side, because I guess you run out of gaurds if you put too many... but I still wasn't very good. Game had a nice overall feel though. Either I hoped it would be a tad easier, or I just need a better strategy /get better at it. Thanks for making it so you don't have to download stuff.

Slime's Guardian by Pepaco 2017-12-04T21:55:09Z

@tulipekoni I tried to put guards everywhere once, but I ran out of guards (not exactly sure how that mechanic works, count-wise), so then I tried to put guards on one half, and cover other half with player

Goonisher by aaforcebox 2017-12-07T00:28:02Z

First of all, "Shift" is not fully accurate - only "left shift" works, you can't use "right shift" I also had an issue with sticky keys pop-ups, from pressing "left shift" so much. But, the look and feel is good. I think you have created a coherent aesthetic with audio and visual. And, when you get down to 40%ish, man the player gets slow. I don't think there was enough bonus points for getting back to the end - it's not worth your while to even bother trying to go back there. Also, the way I played it, I never used the mouse or space. So, I only ended up playing with one hand - wasd and shift. Ended up with 353 points on my 3rd playthrough. Ok, hope that helps. Time to rate you now (and potentially diminish the effect of any spammy ratings).

Goonisher by aaforcebox 2017-12-07T00:58:58Z

It wasn't that the other "skills" weren't usable. I just didn't see the point in wasting gems. I was getting along fine without them.

Crapbag by acoto87 2017-12-07T21:56:00Z

I enjoyed your game. I had no problem figuring out the direction in which the monsters spawned, like a previous comment. I didn't realize you couldn't have extra hearts, until I returned to this page, and read that part (I had just jumped right in.) Once I knew that, I was able to continue on my way. I like your simple, enjoyable, strategy, puzzle game. It was fun, and I did not think it got overwhelming, at all. Once I knew you had to have the exact number, it wasn't difficult to me. Also, the implementation of the z button is huge - great addition. Otherwise, this might be tedious. It's small things like that which matter. Thanks for an enjoyable experience.

I took a picture of my victory, but I don't know if I should post it here, to spoil how to beat final level. You can let me know what you think about that.

Well, I ran clear off the screen, after a bit, and was never able to return... still never died though. The first time, I ran off the screen to top, unable to return. The second game, I got stuck way past the left boundary, unable to return. Is that a bug or a feature?

Kittie Reaper: A Depressed Cat Tale by jfraser314 2017-12-08T00:18:39Z

There's a coherent feel of cute, inevitable doom to this game. The audio and visual work well together, and it's a nice concept. The title is great and this is the only cat reaper I've seen here. So, you've got some uniqueness. Congratulations!

Ketchup Quest - Endless Arcade Fighting to Protect Your Saucy Stash by samboyer276 2017-12-10T03:37:50Z

When I read that one of your features was "2 whole platforms to walk on!" I was immediately sold! And this game did not disappoint. It was an enjoyable experience. I especially loved the "Sense of Accomplishment" boss. I never actually knew how many coins I had, so that's my only complaint, and take it with a dash of mustard. This is by far my number one favorite ketchup game all competition!

P.S. I found out the coin issue was because it was being cut off playing it in the browser.

I agree about wanting a way to restart with the keyboard.

I never saw a single lava lamp.

There's a unique look and feel to this game. Why are you opted out of "mood"? - I think you'd get a good rating in the mood category.

Castle Diorama by Abuki 2017-12-27T17:53:01Z

I appreciate that this is different. Also, it seemed like more than five moves were necessary, but maybe I didn't need to do some things, like kill the wolves. After I extended the trees, they continued to show clickability, but I couldn't do a 2nd thing with them. I could totally see you expanding on this with more stuff you have to do during night, which then affects the day, etc...

Nice unique experience.

10 inches or less by Almost Panda Studio 2017-12-06T02:52:16Z

Well done. There might be a minor bug here or there (I may have snuck through level 7ish exit when I wasn't supposed to be able to, not fully sure), but this is a fully realized game. You should be proud of this accomplishment. It's unique, and I can see it becoming popular.

P.S. The name and picture is what brought me here.

Mobs by Iferit 2017-12-14T00:06:19Z

The characters are adorable. I wish I could see them more up-close in the game.

Fortress Escape by SpaceMonkey 2017-12-07T20:50:02Z

Good job. I enjoyed playing your game. It's impressive how during the defense phase it has a kind of 2D (or flatter, birds eye view) feel, and then when you gotta escape, it goes 3D (first person). I had a little trouble with the shooting of the gun - frankly, I didn't know where I was supposed to shoot the enemies to actually kill them. But, then, I structured a defense in such a way, that would take this into account. So, my new strategy was going to be to run past the defenses, instead of trying to kill them. And, I effectively made it so I'd only have to run past one defense, basically; I could avoid all the others. And it worked for me. Thanks. I enjoyed this strategy game.

Congratulations on your first LD. This is my first one too. If you can get rid of the bugs, this game would be quite playable. It's smart to keep it simple for your first entry. I had no issues with sound, or much of anything else, just getting stuck on those black boxes.

Bobby's awful idea by Drakncel 2017-12-04T23:50:54Z

If you walk outside, then to the left and out back, around the house, then try to return back around on the right side - YOU CAN - even though there's a wall there - you walk right thru it.

I loved the part where the players go on the bed and it becomes blurry. Also, anyone that does anything 3D - my hat's off to them. But, I also have to agree a little about gameplay being a little lacking.

ESCAPE KEY by Empyrean 2017-12-10T00:16:47Z

Good job. I enjoy the innovation here. I saw one other game that used the keyboard like this - Kiwi is the Key, in case you were curious to check that out. I did not find this to be too difficult at all. In fact, my hardest time was on level 1, because I wasn't sure what button was supposed to be the exit key. Once I figured that out, it was fairly smooth sailing. Nicely done.

Space Crash by nikchernyakov 2017-12-05T00:36:40Z

I think the kill function is a tad bit unforgiving - even if you tap a block from the side, very gently, after passing it, you die.

@nikchernyakov yes, indeed, but no risk, no reward... maybe you were not risky enough in trying to kill single resource :D

There are people have that have years of game development experience, but don't have the slightest clue how to make something fun and enjoyable. This was fun and enjoyable. Sure, it's buggy, but the light-heartedness is something I'll take any day over a perfectly polished game that bores me.

Leaf Me Alone by Ryfi 2017-12-07T22:34:27Z

Now for my thoughts: I love the title: Leaf Me Alone. It's a cute little game here, but I learned that I didn't really need to rake once there were a ton of leaves - it was actually more effective to walk (slowly) and push the leaves off - to get a higher leaf score at least. This seemed to make my score on the left increase slower - I guess that's tied to the raking. But, there's a lovely feel to this game, from the boingy log sound to the general concept. Also, in the main menu, where it says "go slow, like in real life" - I got a kick out of that. Anyway, a cute little game.

@refinedsalt It's a good question. I too wonder how many people did not get past the "start page." But, I also didn't want to make things too easy. It's a balancing act, for sure. From what I can tell, from comments and such, I think a sufficient amount of people were able to experience a large portion of the game. And, I also know some people fully beat it. Of course, some never even got to the end of the "start page."

Theme - The Game by Cubeeo 2017-12-09T21:38:32Z

@edmond00 Thanks for the feedback; the dev team (me) is taking notes on input for future output. Frankly, I should've realized that about where you re-start and changed it, because as I was developing it and play-testing it over and over, I got tired of having to continually re-start there myself. Although, I may have realized that too far along in the process anyway, at which point there was no going back. As it was, this was my third different idea I tried to develop for this contest (the first one I spent several hours on and then threw in the trash). I'm new, I'll get better.

What I was hoping to achieve was the following: I get brilliant player who knows lots and lots about games. They come to my little game and "click" early on, as they are told. And, they enjoy Act 1 - The Start Page. Then, they are given a "player" and are forced to realize "oh, this is actual game." I tried to make that part as obvious as possible with the name of the "player", starting that jet thrust sound and having the "player" move. I then hoped my brilliant gameplayers would then count on their wits - I've played games before, what do I normally do with character? Do I move it? Sure. Ok, good. Let's go... And off we go...

I understand that some people never made it to that point, but I also wanted my brilliant gameplayers who beat the game to feel rewarded, like they accomplished something, because they did - they are brilliant! YAY!

@jebouin Yes, the collisions are a bit weird. The number of themes that need to be killed before you advance corresponds directly to the number on the wall before the portal. So, if you haven't killed that many yet, then you can't go through the portal yet. And, from the sound of it, you're missing at least one.

Theme - The Game by Cubeeo 2017-12-10T22:14:56Z

@ethan-kennerly Thanks for the feedbacks. A concern of mine throughout the creation process was the balancing act of what to tell the player / what not to tell the player. Less clues? More clues? Hard to tell. So, thanks for feedback. Your input has been notated to improve future output.

Theme - The Game by Cubeeo 2017-12-13T07:45:54Z

@red-fan-games Yeah, what you're suggesting about designing for all kinds of crowds is no easy task. In the process of catering to one crowd, another crowd can become dis-interested and vice versa. I definitely didn't want to make things too easy. And, a side effect of that was that a fair number of people weren't able to enjoy the whole experience. But, I'm glad you enjoyed the portion you were able to experience. Throughout the creation process, I was aware that I'd have mixed reactions to my game; all I can hope for is that some people enjoyed it. Thanks for your comments, especially the one about mood - it's interesting how a game with so little graphics and audio proficiency gave you that feeling - it's good to know. And, frankly, I just like to know how far people got. I kind of wish I had an exit poll surveying people to find that out.

@ronanrorry Yeah, it's short, I just hope it's enjoyable. It's not just my first LD, it's also my first jam and first time uploading a game to itch, so I wanted to start the upload process several hours early, and I'm glad I did because it actually took me an hour or two to get the upload to work here (because my game was titled "Theme", which was an issue, but I didn't realize it at the time.) It was much more comfortable to "have upload issues" several hours before the deadline, then right at the deadline. Hopefully, next time, I'll make something a bit longer. Though, I'm proud of this. It was fun.

Yeah, it does (or can... actually will need to / be forced to when you drive into a wall) but I guess you figured that out in the "EDIT"

@ajayajayaj Yeah, thanks, so like 14th worst? :nerd: I gotta say while I fully understand people not knowing what to do / click in many instances I'm still baffled about people not figuring out the space bar (there's a wall of text that says Space). It initially says "Limited Space" but once you drive through it Space remains perpetually (at the exact moment when you finally need to press space). Frankly though, I think people are confusing the need to press the space bar with the arrow keys.

My next entry is definitely going to have no guessing about controls though.

Thanks for the feedback.

Congratulations on your first jam! This is my first jam too. I arrived here after you posted your description / instructions, so I didn't have any issues with that, like some earlier commenters had. There are a few positives here, that I'll point out. 1) You knew your limitations and didn't try to create something beyond those limitations. That is a good thing. 2) This game is appropriate to the theme, and actually pulls that off in a way that is better than a lot of entries on here, because of the following: you gave people a way to dump coins. I've played a decent number of entries on here. So many of them have a mechanic where the more you have the worse (in some form or another) it is. But, so many of them fail to include a pressure relief valve, so that you can undo having so much of whatever it is. The games that succeed include that pressure relief valve. So, it was smart of you to include that spike aspect. That might seem obvious, that you need something like that (to prevent the game from becoming impossible), but so many game entries on here failed to realize that. So, you have good awareness, both of your abilities and how to use the theme without making the game impossible. I'd say that awareness alone can propel you above half of the crowd. Good job.

Fermented Freedom! I got a chuckle out of it.

Annoying Dogs by Grahamliphts 2017-12-04T22:43:54Z

After playing this, I just realized I never released a dog, and now I'm wondering, why would I release a dog? I know some dogs escaped, but what's the benefit of releasing a dog? If I kept playing this, I think I'd continue to not release dogs, as I wouldn't perceive there to be much benefit. Now, maybe if I release one it's better than losing 2, but I'd figure I'd just try to hang on to all of them.

Scoring-wise, I'm not sure how to win, but I enjoyed your game. It has a cohesive mood and feel to it, and it seems to be pretty unique. Well done.

Corrupture by Chyme 2017-12-10T05:11:56Z

I played the HTML5 version directly in the browser and didn't have any problems. Congratulations on your first game jam. This was enjoyable. There's a nice look and feel to this, and this was innovative. The way the health and the firepower were interconnected was smart to do for the jam - it kind of brings various skilled players to a level playing field. Someone above me said it was too easy because of that, but I tried just standing in the dark and ended up dying, so, I don't think so. It was fun. Your mechanic made it so that both super skilled players and poor players could equally enjoy it. I liked it. I think this was a great first entry.

Forgotten Machines by SaphireS 2017-12-10T00:35:59Z

I played the game, then I read the comments. I was surprised when you said, "I didn’t plan for anybody to get that far." Anyway, with this theme, so many games went the route of becoming impossible, because they created tons of enemies, or weight, or whatever their thing was. So, I'm glad you didn't go that route. I got a kick out of the direction you took this - the more you have the worse it is for the enemy. Which is why I'm surprised you didn't expect anybody would get that far. I don't know if you thought people would quit on the game or what, but you literally become invincible. But, it was fun. I enjoyed my experience. The look and feel was nice. And, I appreciated the freshness. Thanks. Here's a pic from my game:

P.S. I played directly on the web and had zero issues with firing or anything.

Temple Hunt by Toccs 2017-12-22T14:56:40Z

Congratulations on creating your first game! You've created a consistent mood and atmosphere here. As for the lack of clothing, I guess everyone else failed to unlock the secret to find the clothes :) Such noobs! Lol. Anyway, I successfully escaped with zero gold (and all my clothes)!

The Sun Revolves Around ME! by blu3bird 2017-12-19T18:21:56Z

This from two comments up:

"The point of the game is to warm the planet up, get the planet to be in the +++ state and when you do that long enough, it levels up. A new planet appears and you do the same for the new one."

Needs to be posted somewhere prominently. I too was lost, and it was the web version, but there was nothing wrong with the web version, I just didn't know what to do, how to progress. Once I read your comment, I tried again, and it was smooth sailing. Once I figured that out, it was a nice game. Oh, and the lovely title is what brought me here. Cute graphics too. And it's an original take on the theme, which I appreciate.

Don't get drunk by tulipekoni 2017-12-10T01:13:19Z

Congratulations on your first jam; this is my first jam too. You successfully created an enjoyable experience. Bravo! I got drunk, is that a bad thing?

IGotDrunk.png

This is a successful game because you knew your limitations and worked within those confines. You didn't try to do too much. You kept it simple and fun, and it was. Part of the beauty of not knowing a lot about programming is that it forces one to be creative, and you embraced that. Cheers!

Sänka Viking - A Viking Warship Simulator by Erlatronics 2017-12-05T00:49:06Z

I sunk your pirateship!!! First of all, hats off to the 3D. It's impressive to attempt a 3D game in such a short time frame. This game is simple in a good way. I want to play more, and different levels of this. To me, this is an example of using the theme in a way that makes the game good, as opposed to obnoxious. I think too many of the games with this theme default to fairly impossible games, yours does not, and I like that about it. The music is also perfectly appropriate. Good job.

Super Wall Paint! by beepyeah 2017-12-07T04:28:51Z

I always wondered when I would finally get a wall-painting sim. Now, I can check that off my bucket list.

This is a coherently simple game. Nothing overly complex about it. And, you don't start off too hard.

However, I think I hit a bug, circa level 11, after a few play-throughs. I could not move my brushes down.

Sumo Slam 2D by Joel Rochon 2017-12-05T02:47:21Z

Good job. I like your game. You use the theme well, and it's fun to bounce the sumo guy around... nice, simple concept, and I don't say simple in a bad way. Simple in a good way.

Matchy's Kooky Cookies by Michael Silverman 2017-12-10T03:12:19Z

There is a coherent mood and feel to the audio and visuals. I read some of the other comments, and I don't know what people didn't understand. Maybe I played the game wrong, but I won:

MatchysKookyCookies.png

It seemed very straight forward to me. The clicking did get a little redundant, as I found the best strategy was to just constantly click at the nearest wave of banditos. Anyway, congrats on your first jam! I'm in the same boat - first jam - and 16 hours in, I wasn't sure if I was going to end up submitting anything at all, and ended up starting over from scratch. So, I know the feeling, but you persevered!

I took too many drugs by Neecko 2017-12-06T19:18:31Z

I gave it a shot, I downloaded your game, I'm playing and thinking, "this is gonna be a 5 on graphics, for sure" and then I find out, you're not running in the graphics category! The 3D looks great. Outside looks great. And then I took too many drugs...

I took too many drugs by Neecko 2017-12-06T20:47:54Z

@neecko You did it right, with integrity. If you don't do all your graphics, opt out. But, if you did 80% of these graphics, then I'd definitely suggest next dare you try to do all 100% and opt into graphics, because I think you can place very high in that category - like top 10.

BirdBrain by CosmicCrystalGames 2017-12-21T01:15:22Z

This is a game worth playing, but there's no directions until AFTER you figure out the buttons on your own. You have a tutorial, but it doesn't start until you press the buttons and figure them out on your own. It might seem like such a minor thing, but I'll bet it's why there aren't more ratings for this game.

This is a well-polished game with a consistent look and feel to it, and it's quite enjoyable. Well done.

LootOnline by totsboy 2017-12-10T09:58:41Z

First of all, a game called "LootOnline" didn't have an online version until today?!?

Secondly, I thought I'd officially dub myself your unofficial online play tester, to see if it worked, bug free, but, frankly, I don't know. Maybe it was bug free. Maybe not. The daily and weekly stuff never worked. Frankly, I don't know if that's intentional or not - I'm on the fence about whether it is.

So, now that I got all that out of the way... I like the concept, BUT there was too much boring stuff / time to get to the humor. For example, I almost close the game right before getting to the "use real money" part. And, that's really where the humor was, and I just barely made it that far. Though, I enjoyed how the "prize loot" just sat around worthlessly.

I had the game open in my other window while typing this comment, and I just went back to it, and, apparently, the daily and weekly buttons DO function, or at least now they do. But, I have to be LOOKING at my coin totals WHILE pressing the button to see the change, since there's no sound or any other indicator. Also, I apparently just beat the game, and I also enjoy the ending. So, there's good humor here, for sure. It's great satire. But, I also don't want to sit around just clicking a button for so long. I don't know if this helps at all. Congrats on your first LD; it's my first LD too.

P.S. Online version seems to work fine, but the "expansion" button doesn't actually expand the screen, it just adds whitespace on the right and bottom. I played it un-expanded.

Innocent Chickens by sandrofigo 2017-12-05T01:00:21Z

I had seen a preview gif of this, and thought it was going to be very difficult. Surprisingly, it was not. I mean, for awhile. I seemed to be getting along nicely. I was growing my batch of chickens and then WHAM - a handful of blades crashed down from all angles and killed my entire flock - or, at least I lost them all right then and there. But, up until that point, I seriously thought I'd be playing the game for quite awhile; I was actually wondering if it was too easy, but it does get harder. I think the difficulty level is appropriate - not too tough right off the bat. It's pretty cool game.

Innocent Chickens by sandrofigo 2017-12-05T01:13:02Z

I played the game some more, and I fully understand the lose condition, and I figured out that there's a way to never lose.

Growing Polytheism by legulysse 2017-12-22T02:14:06Z

The music here works well, which is very important for this game to work. I just wish I could get more of my villagers to wander away from the "town square." Well done. I'd like to see what becomes of this in the future. It's nice and pleasant to play.

Kiwi is the Key by JuanCarlosGdM 2017-12-06T21:41:38Z

This game is tough, but some of the other comments raise a good point - you created a unique gameplay mechanic, so you should be applauded for that. Also, this game feels different. Another plus. And it has a coherent look and feel to it. It's just really hard, though. Maybe if you slow the boulders down a tiny bit, or reduce the number of them a tiny bit, early on, so the player can get accustomed to it. Also, I like the title - Kiwi is the Key.

Also, I think you should make it so the spikes can't randomly appear on the square you're already standing on.

Don't take my coins by JanaChumi 2017-12-08T03:19:39Z

I disagree with the people who prefer spacebar for jumping. I prefer the up-arrow. Also, I don't think the jumping was the issue. The related issue, in my mind, was that most of the platforms you could not reach by jumping, so there was only one (or two) ways you could go to get up to a high point.

As for the little arrow above me, I didn't even notice it early on. I didn't realize what I was supposed to be doing right away. I went into the game thinking coins=bad, so I tried to avoid the coins, but there's only one coin. Once I got into it, sweeping gnomes is a nice idea.

Oh no! Zombies! by Benjamin San Souci 2017-12-09T04:25:57Z

So, there's a bunch of comments here complaining about the achievements... but THAT'S THE POINT! I can't believe how off-base these comments are. To the game makers, ignore those comments, but you're probably doing that anyway. I'm guessing you achieved exactly what you set out to achieve, so well done.

I mean, the game description literally says: "Kill zombies, get achievements!" And this game effectively makes fun of what a lot of games have become. So, this is effective satire.

Oh no! Zombies! by Benjamin San Souci 2017-12-09T04:51:10Z

P.S. Someone said something about chrome above. I did this in chrome:

Took me forever to realize shift 1 was a 1, and not an I or an L (or some other symbol).

Oh no! Zombies! by Benjamin San Souci 2017-12-17T16:18:15Z

The more I think about this game, the more I love this game. (I'm also pretty good at it.) By the way, I just returned here to bump up your theme score, but apparently, there's no more room. You win!
