I don't understand how to play, I try to build, but a person spawns and I lose.

Edit: I figured it out, I needed to build power first. Haha. Awesome!

I guess I'll stop there:

I really love the mood of your game, even though you didn't make the graphics, you chose very good ones for this.

At first, I was a bit confused by my failures but I only failed at 1 people in the city. Once I understood I had to build houses quickly before that first guy show up, there was not much challenge anymore.

The hide/show inventory is a very good addition! I was thinking to myself "how will I put things there?" then I remember your blog post ^^

I'm also still not sure what is the difference between the people and the bed icon?

Overall, good job! For your second game in unity, it's great! Congratulation

Townbuild game is always addicting. I was playing your game for sometime then I realised that it has no ending. Good entry, if you keep the project on you can maybe have a good selling product.

sebbernery 2017-12-09 19:01

I would be curious to know what's your master thesis subject (is this gamedev related or a total different field like urbanism or geography ?). Congratulations for your submission. Now, I guess the priority is to make an happy ending :). Ps: I think you should edit your description to say it's very important to build an house and a plant very quickly when the game start. I lost few times before figure out how to play a normal game.

machrom 2017-12-09 19:10

Okay, so I've played this for a while. The idea is really good, but there's very little stuff to do. What I would suggest for the next steps(I'm not a pro, just take this as an advice/opinion):

1. Add some kind of an ending 2. Make it so every house produces garbage, that then has to be processed in a recycling center or smh. 3. Variety to renewable sources(solar/idk what else exists) 4. After that just keep thinking of stuff to add, there's ton of stuff for a city builder, but remember to add what's important to your master thesis :D

It's a good idea, and a good start, but there's not enough things in there. Hope this helps! :)

artur-hawkwing 2017-12-09 19:41

Very fun! At first it did confuse me as well, but once I understood how to start it was quite fun. I would have loved being able to pan / rotate the view, have more buildings, and maybe even grow the area could inhabit.

I think the things with a city builder is that there is always room for a larger scope. Having played a few games like this before, I keep finding myself looked for more—especially some goal to win or advance. I think a game like this would be great with procedurally generated maps, something you could expand into essentially infinitely.

There is a ton of potential here, and I love what you have done so far.

And feel free to cite anything I've said here :) Good luck on your thesis!

fedor 2017-12-09 20:14

@sebbernery It's related with gamedev. I need to prepare case study about developing game for educational aims. But my sister is studying about ecology and I came to the conclusion it could be nice topic for game.

@machrom I've in my mind recycling different types of garbage but I didn't have time for that.

@artur-hawkwing I'll think about procedurally generated maps, but it will be hard to manage building on irregular surface. But I'll need to make area much bigger and let to move arround.

Thank you all for feedback :D

pixelformedstudios 2017-12-09 23:16

The only thing which I found tedious was the fact that you had to be really quick when starting or you would automatically lost. Apart from this the gameplay was pretty good and I really liked the models in the game. Good job!

tulipekoni 2017-12-10 10:57

Good entry! I also felt that you died a bit too soon at the start. also in art perspective: I would add some kind oflight to the scene (this is unity tho) and maybe night and day shifts. the city would feel more alive. good job!

cubeeo 2017-12-11 09:44

You have to be so absurdly fast in the beginning that one might be inclined to think the game is bugged or broken.

While I was playing, I couldn't help but wonder if this was a study on where people were inclined to put the wind turbines, analyzing the whole "not in my backyard" mentality.

Anyway, it's a good beginning to a game. It could totally be a fully functioning game if you expanded on it.

creamybacon2 2017-12-12 00:57

I played your game and thought it was really good, looked good, played well, and was easy to pick up. My one critique is that as long as you keep up with the power and houses the game dose not seem to get any harder. If people started to spawn faster with the more people you had would fix that. Other than that Good Work!

drtizzle 2017-12-13 00:31

Nice entry! A bit hard to understand at first, because you die very fast while trying to understand the game. But after some trial and error I "sort of" got it. It looks very nice and the concept is good, but I got little to no feedback about what I was doing wrong (or right). For example I didn't know why I couldn't place more houses at some point.

With some more feedback about what you're doing wrong and a more gradual buildup of the difficulty, this can be awesome!

Well done!

conrad123 2017-12-13 01:28

Nice work, especially for having just learned Unity. I have barely used Unity before and I had to code some of the hardest stuff in our game :P. I really like how the NPCs navigate around the houses. It's a cool detail that really spices up the game. I feel like you should have instructions on this page, just so we know what we're doing when we start to play. I didn't understand how the game worked until I saw the first comments. The game is hard at first, but once you get a few things set up, it's really easy. There's no exponential population growth; if that was the case, things could get really interesting. If you added more things to place down, that could really spice up the game as well. Maybe you would need a hospital to support the sick, or a military to protect the city. There's a lot of potential in this game, so I encourage you to keep working on it!

mawrito 2017-12-13 11:26

well the idea is cool, but there is not so much things to do in the game, no difficulties so well you just have to spam energy and houses. But still the art is cool and the concept needs to be pushed a little bit. nice work

zgragselus 2017-12-13 16:51

The idea is neat, although there are few flaws/notes/additions:

- You're not instructed how to control/what to do in a game at start, before realizing what is on screen you lose! This will lead into players just closing the game (of course not on LD, but normal players would just quit) - When building there is very little feedback about where the building is going to get placed (or whether building is going to be built at all) - Once you build few items, the game gets extremely repetitive - and boring. There is no mid or late game. Adding events and buildings to unlock would help here a lot - I'd introduce cables/energy transportation or pollution, that would require more careful planning, instead of just literally dumping any objects anywhere

I know this is for game jam - so it's technically a prototype - and what I've written would surpass any time-range for it. But could point you in what I'd enjoy more (which is, again, highly subjective).

Keep up the good work!

samboyer276 2017-12-13 21:27

Hey, this was pretty good! I think the art fit it very well. But maybe it might be a bit more interesting if something changed as you progressed, like population increase rate or more building/utility unlocks? Overall though, quite nice :)

flubz 2017-12-13 22:03

The art and the UI in particular are brilliant but the game is lacking overall, I'd say speed the game up a ton! Consider adding mechanics in like limited space to keep things a bit more interesting. Also a soundtrack would have been a nice addition too.

But for a 2nd Unity game, Well done!

jordgubben 2017-12-17 18:09

This has probably already been said a a couple of times, but this game really need some form of tutorial.

I've build a bunch of windmills and houses. Cant really understand what I'm supposed to do next. Skärmavbild 2017-12-17 kl. 19.01.33.png

So for instance: - What is the difference between the two house types? - Can I get more house types and how? - Are there any negative side effects of building power plants next to houses? - Who is Ed? (And what does he do?)

Not my intent to sound to negative though. Give this a few more weekends and you could be on to something.

Cheers.

schu 2017-12-20 23:16

Unfortunately I just got game over as soon as somebody spawns every time. I couldn't build houses or anything.

fedor 2017-12-20 23:23

@schu It's hard at the beginning. You must at first build wind turbine and then a house before somebody shows up. I know that I should give some more time for that.

starlin 2017-12-28 19:19

At the start, it suddenly game over when first person appeared like other comments mentioned, but I managed to get windmill and house put on site really quick!

This idea is what I seen so far touched environment/recycling, this game has huge potentials I think, some comments here: people seems not related to houses? what if they can get into houses buildings, create roads you can't put anything, some green area too? somehow I want to rotate the scene, if it could rolate left/right/front/back views will be very awesome. And the bar for buildings and resources, so wanted to put aside! Maybe you can fold it and unfold it? A bit story telling may be required, overall I really like the idea. Keep going!
