Interesting idea with the coins slower you down :P The death and the animations needed to be a little bit smoother but other than that fun game :D

gwolf86 2017-12-05 00:04

Where are his clothes?! 🤣 I noticed a couple of issues with the collision detection and the level is a bit dark, but other than that it's really good. Great work for your first game!

I like the animations of the character! (and indeed, where did he loose his clothes?) The temple is really dark though on my screen, so I couldn't see the traps. I'll play your game again on my other screen when I get home and hope it's lighter there.

Physics seem to be a little weird, especially when walking up the hill. Apart from that looks very good for your first LD

seththefirst 2017-12-05 10:39

I don't know if it's happening with everybody, but for me, the game is too dark... I can barely see the char. Probably the mood was a little bit too much... hehehehehe

Sorry about that I've fixed the lighting and made it a bit brighter for you all. Hes naked because i'm still learning how to texture a character properly :)

Hey there, good job on finishing a game! I think the movement mechanics are mosty solid and feel good. The only problem with that is that the character collision is still a bit wonky (did you make use of a capsule collider?), because sometimes you miss a jump but still survive because the character sticks to a wall just above the spikes  I heard you fixed the brightness and it was very nice play now, very difficult too! I think you did a great job on the models and textures and can't wait until you use these assets in a more realistic scene. Good job on making the game!

toccs 2017-12-06 09:11

@virtual-turtle-studio

Yeah i used a capsule collider but i also created a sphere trigger to detect the floor (for jumping) and i think that's why hes sticking to surfaces, as i marked the entire environment model as "ground" which ill need to change in future.

Thank you for the feedback on the models and textures its really hard getting it right and i'm pretty new to art.

All the best Virtual Turtle Studio!

I like the atmosphere. Playing the game was a little rough but the effort shows! :-)

I like the art style keep it up! don’t forget to check out my game too:)

The gameplay idea is very simple and that is okay. The graphics and sounds makes a very creepy atmosphere, and this part is really good for a LD game. I have no issues with the controls and for me physics in the game worked fine. Overall a fine LD game. And welcome to Ludum Dare.

@toccs *"Hes naked because i’m still learning how to texture a character properly"*

I'm not sure what modelling software you are using, so I will use techniques from Blender... pretty sure that save for different names of function that should apply to other tools too.

Option one - Have several materials set up on the mesh. Then while editing the mesh you can assign faces to each different materials, and so have different colors and properties on each. Pros - more intuitive to edit. Cons - several materials for rendering = less efficient rendering.

Option two - Mark the seams between faces where you want to use different materials (like you want to make a shirt, mark seams around neck, waist and wrists) so when you unwrap the UV map you get separate "islands" in UV. Spread those isles around the UV map and just paint the texture in different colors. Pros: - you only need one material. Cons: - you can only swap the whole texture file if you need to change one color. More work to do...

Option three - A combination of both. Place the seams as per option 2, unwrap the UVs (though this tile you would need more seams to make sure UVs don't overlap!). Then use materials to show different colors on the model, and bake this colors into the texture. Pros - This way you can have more details, like specular, normal and heighmap baked for you too - this will visually enhance the model, while still using only one material for efficient rendering! Cons - you really need to know how to pull it off beforehand... Trying to lean those trick during the jam will just sink your time... ((I remember you, LD38! ))

Pretty good for a first game, there's some problems with collisions but the controls are good. You have a nice core to keep working on it.

cubeeo 2017-12-22 14:56

Congratulations on creating your first game! You've created a consistent mood and atmosphere here. As for the lack of clothing, I guess everyone else failed to unlock the secret to find the clothes :) Such noobs! Lol. Anyway, I successfully escaped with zero gold (and all my clothes)!

justinooncx 2017-12-23 05:41

Not bad for a first time! Still, gonna comment on the game as it is, so don't feel too bad about it.

Interesting that you chose the gold obtained to be random... Why is that? With that system, whenever I obtain gold, I can't quite tell if I'm really moving slower or not. Ramps function oddly in the game, where going up them is a chore, and it's better to just jump over. All fine and dandy, until I jumped and hit my head on the giant boulder that I DIDN'T trigger, and still died anyway.

Still, it looks great for the first game you made. Well done!

prodigalson 2017-12-23 19:23

I think I cheated as it looks like my horizontal movement remains the same while in the air so it was easy to move so long as I kept jumping. lol :D Congratulations on finishing a game. That in itself is a rewarding experience.

stmatn 2017-12-23 20:19

I like the idea, that you get slower, when you pick up gold. The collision detection is a bit buggy, because I would always stick to the wall after jumping the its with the giant spikes. All in all nice work

saramartins 2017-12-24 07:08

First of all, congratulations on your first game! It was a solid entry, and all by yourself! I feel like it is a good concept that can evolve to something even better. The controls were ok, going up a ramp was hard. It made me jump, and ultimately hit the untriggered boulder and die. That bummed me a little. Maybe having checkpoints could be a good idea. The collisions were also weird, I got stuck to walls when jumping on the big hole and those spiked pits.

The gameplay was simple but the idea is nice. However the randomness of the gold you got doesn't make sense to me. There can be no challenge, depending on how much you luckily pick. Good job on the modelling and texturing, that along with the sound creates a really nice atmosphere.

Also, the guy not having clothes was way too funny :joy:

Overall great job, just needs some fixes to the controls, the gold pickup and maybe give the poor man some pants  Congratulations and don't be discouraged about anything, be proud of your great first creation!

Also, we'd love if you gave our game a try :) https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/40/santas-factory
