LD40 — The more you have, the worse it is

Orbits by tuism 2017-12-15T12:58:51Z

Awesome work, this was a blast to play. The atmosphere was spot on and the gameplay was challenging. Literally the only thing that i'd change would be to prevent the player from spawning multiple planets in quick succession. I Found that spamming a whole load in at the start could get you a really high score, since being hit makes you temporarily invulnerable and you can use that power to knock all the planets into a reasonable orbit. Overall though, fantastic work. This is one of my favourite games from the Compo.

A Walk To The Finish Line by jk5000 2017-12-05T00:24:37Z

Really great puzzle game. I love the aesthetics.

The more hair you have... by Naca 2017-12-09T16:10:39Z

Nice work and an interesting take on the theme. It was good that you could complete it both ways for different endings. It's rare to see games tackle social issues like this and this one was really well presented.

The more hair you have... by Naca 2017-12-09T16:57:07Z

Ah, fair enough. I just assumed it was the "bad" ending. You could treat it that way and have it as a win/lose kind of game.

ANTagonist by schizoid2k 2017-12-07T10:43:57Z

Nice work and a cool idea. My only complaint would be the limited firing directions, which makes the game artificially harder. I like how the sound effects build the tension, really well done.

Money Is Everything by Jani Nykanen 2017-12-05T16:28:28Z

This game looks beautiful, the animations are awesome and the controls handle brilliantly. The only downside is the lack of music to bring it all together. Otherwise, Fantastic work.

Save the Hats by Gruhh 2017-12-09T10:13:28Z

Great work. It's incredible that you managed to fit in a cut scene and dialogue in there too! The design has a great retro arcade feel. The only real downside for me was not being able to skip the dialogue at the start of each new game.

Kritter Keeper by Archimagus 2017-12-05T20:36:37Z

Great work. It's like a turbo charged Tamagotchi! I really like the art and the theme is brilliant.

Post Mayhem by Niphram 2017-12-04T12:41:15Z

Great work and nice take on the theme. The addition of using tape is a great addition to the classic stacking games. I wasn't a fan of the audio but the graphics were very nicely done.

Marching Band Parade by fancy89 2017-12-09T12:25:02Z

This is a really great concept and I love the clean simple visuals (although it would be nice to see the characters carrying some low-poly instruments too). The controls are a bit fiddly with mouse but I imagine this would work great on touch devices. Overall, i really enjoyed it.

Coins of rage by luizdev 2017-12-05T16:18:31Z

Great work, this was a really challenging game. I love the story and the art is fantastic!

Sofra by dietzribi 2017-12-05T00:31:23Z

Great work on this game. I love the animation and the game is really fun. My only complaint would be that the jump is a bit of a pain and some of those gaps seem to be nearly pixel perfect!

Lampauttaja by Jani 2017-12-04T19:18:59Z

This is a beautiful looking game. I had a hard time getting the sheep to follow me and they regularly seems to kamikaze off the level. Other than that I liked it. The level design was good and did I mention those graphics!

Brick Racer by nekoballs 2017-12-19T17:32:12Z

I had great fun trying to beat the highscore (ended up around 8th) it's a simple concept but really enjoyable. I'd be nice to have your current health more centralized so you can glance at it easier but the mechanics are solid. Great work.

Money Dungeon by Mathiouza 2017-12-05T09:52:03Z

Nice work. I couldn't really feel the theme coming through but it's still a solid game that I enjoyed (Nice troll on the quit button!).

Jazzy Beats by Moski 2017-12-10T10:46:40Z

I love the art style and the music is catchy, very cool! Nicely done.

Embol by azlen 2017-12-04T11:20:50Z

I really love what you did with the theme. It's a shame it was so short, I can imagine this being a very fun and difficult game once the conversations get a bit more advanced. I just wanted to keep playing to see what would happen to the poor guy!

Embol by azlen 2017-12-04T11:43:35Z

Sounds great. The Compo is quite stressful to try and fit everything in but I'm impressed with what you have so far. Let me know when the post-compo version is out, I'd love to play it! :D

Dangle Copter by pkenney 2017-12-05T14:54:53Z

Fantastic, easily in my top 5 games played this jam. i absolutely loved the control scheme and it's not something I've come across before, which is great. The art was superb and the sound was great, some light background music might have been nice though (nothing overpowering mind, and having no music didn't detract from the experience). To make it harder, maybe add damage to the helicopter or people, so you can only screw it up so many times. Overall though, fantastic work.

.SWARM by Hegemege 2017-12-04T21:28:52Z

This is a really interesting mechanic. Nice work. It would be nice to have the ability to erase part of the path, but it works just fine as is. Great work!

Tentagraba by Huitre 2017-12-22T09:43:35Z

Genius! I absolutely loved this game. Takes dexterity games to a whole new level if you try to play it slow, like twister for your keyboard. Very original and the audio and visuals are both spot on. Definitely in my top 10 for the compo, great work!

The Legend of the Bikini Armor by Sun-Wukong 2017-12-06T12:52:43Z

Funny story (although the English could do with some work) and fantastic artwork. It's a shame you ran into problems, it would be great to see where the game went after this. The platforming seemed solid, it was just lacking the polish that time would give you. Great work.

EA's spaceBattle by dodormeur 2017-12-19T17:20:06Z

This was pretty funny. I can't really say much more than that.

The lost strawberry by egordorichev 2017-12-05T15:17:37Z

Nice work. The game could do with a little more hand-holding in the beginning, at least until you get used to what you're looking for. There's a lot going on so it's pretty hard to tell what you actually have to do right of the bat. It's a solid platformer though and the controls were nice. Great job.

Patient Zero by btwj 2017-12-05T00:44:20Z

This has got to be my favourite game so far. Simple and elegant design, good strategy elements. Exactly my kind of game. I'd love to know if you develop the idea further after the jam.

Infinity racer by mukult 2017-12-22T09:27:33Z

Cool game but the difficulty curve is insane! It seems like the levels use random generation, which can quite happily place blocks that are impossible to avoid. This really killed the enjoyment for me, as it became more about luck than skill. That said, I like the minimalist visuals and the audio was well suited.

Slightly annoying traffic by JOrbits 2017-12-05T16:44:42Z

This was some good fun, if only to watch the carnage at the end. The difficulty curve was quite nicely balanced. The only downside for me was the audio. Other than that, great job.

Make Ludum Dare Great Again by ultimategrinder 2017-12-06T14:43:56Z

Great idea and sums up the jam perfectly (so I've been told - This was my first and I did the compo). The art style was really cool and the game played well. Great work.

Be Yourself by Noa Calice 2017-12-05T14:14:19Z

Really cool concept - simply but effective, and fits the theme perfectly. I really like the artwork, it has a similar vibe to some of the stuff from 2D Boy. I also like the little details, like being able to change your character.

Lights, Camera, Action! by gamesplusjames 2017-12-04T21:41:58Z

Love the concept and the humor. It was difficult to get the one-liner multiplier up but the voice acting was awesome and the one liners were excellent. Really cool game, great work.

Do Ki by 360 2017-12-05T21:42:18Z

Looks like a great start and reminds me of some of the old retro games from back in the NES days.

Kalyuka by soyrandom 2017-12-05T10:24:26Z

Great work for your first LD. I really liked the character design and music. It would have been nice to see some more variation in the enemies (holding space just seemed to annihilate everything) and the tentacles seems a bit unfair, since you never knew where they were going to pop up next and had a goo chance of killing you. Overall though, it's a solid entry and I really enjoyed playing it.

CrudeCarnageCars40 by elZach 2017-12-05T21:06:55Z

Great fun and complete carnage! (no pun intended). The car was fun to control and I loved the cardboard buildings. A really great entry and would be great as a couch co-op game.

CrudeCarnageCars40 by elZach 2017-12-10T17:25:14Z

Great work on the extra tracks and multiplayer mode. Thanks for letting me know they're arrived. I love how insane this game is! On the next iteration, it would be nice to see what position others are in the race. With so much going on it becomes hard to know who you're really racing against.

CrudeCarnageCars40 by elZach 2017-12-10T19:26:21Z

yeah, makes sense. still fun regardless :)

The 1D107 Exterminator by Gris 2017-12-09T12:39:08Z

Really like the idea and the limited ammo forces you to select your targets carefully. The inclusion of the day/might cycle was cool, but I didn't see much variation in gameplay between the two (other than just the light). I like the fact that you could destroy the terrain but it did present a problem in some levels, where you could effectively bottleneck the enemy and then just blast away until you win the level. You could fix this by making the enemies potentially damage terrain over time. Great work overall though, I really enjoyed playing it.

A Hero's Burden by muffty 2017-12-15T14:56:43Z

Cool idea, I like the idea that there are not good choices, but I didn't really feel like my choices had any real consequence to the overall story. It's amazing how my you got done in the time, but I'd have like to see a few more nods to the choices you made in earlier levels (even if that meant the levels were longer but there weren't as many). The atmosphere was great and the story was well delivered. I'd love to play a longer version if you're team decides to keep working on it.

Squirrel Puncher 4000! by valkling-friend-of-all-things 2017-12-11T09:08:52Z

Interesting idea and could be really cool with some extra polish. I really liked the music, very catchy and fit the theme you were going for. I got 2 KOs and a run time of 02:31 before my RSI gave up on me.

The Floor is Lava by BinarySpark 2017-12-06T16:11:23Z

This is awesome! The graphics and sound effects are both awesome and the game is really fun to play. I did find that the best strategy was to just hug the wall, so if you keep working on it, maybe add some sections where you can't just rely on sticking to the side. Great work!

Horny Bunny by Thomas FUentes 2017-12-05T16:04:02Z

Got solid platformer with a really twisted sense of humor. The graphics were good (reminded me of the oatmeal) and there were no game-breaking bugs (although I did occasionally get caught on the corner of blocks). Overall though, great work.

Danger Noodle by Matthew Roelle 2017-12-04T17:24:49Z

Great idea mashing snake and platforming! Love the graphics too, has a really nice retro vibe.

Too Many Chooks by Schu 2017-12-05T10:32:57Z

Great game! The mechanic is simple but it's the little things that really make it sing. I like the fact that you get a little pre-warning before the eggs drop and the unlock mechanic had be go back and play again to see if I could get them all. I'm not sure why the chickens are happy that you're eating there eggs though! The sounds fit the game well and the art style was nice. Great job! high score was only 76 and I unlocked all but 3 of the chickens.

Too Many Cooks! by Bocodillo 2017-12-04T12:15:59Z

Great work. Very hectic! I couldn't quite work out what some of the ingredients would do until they were dropped in the pot and my sous chefs loved fish for some reason... By they end I was just slapping away sous chefs left and right to try and preserve the broth I had.

Quantum's Rick by cortexdeveloper 2017-12-05T15:07:52Z

interesting idea and fits the theme well. So, will be contacting adult swim after this and making a fully licensed version?

DEEPER by vizitas 2017-12-04T21:17:44Z

Really nice atmosphere. I couldn't get all three chests, but I'll keep trying!

DrugRunner by AMastryukov 2017-12-05T09:15:31Z

Died going at 91 km/h with a blood alcohol level of 0.48%! I really like how each drug was linked to a different post-processing effect. It felt like you had to try and balance the drugs so you could still sort of see where you were going.

I'm tired of all your stuff by oliverlevay 2017-12-05T11:14:52Z

The sound effects were awesome, love the little one liners too. Gameplay was fun, and I currently hold the high score (45)! :D

I'm tired of all your stuff by oliverlevay 2017-12-05T11:23:59Z

Damn it, well that lasted all of 2 seconds!

Odaya by MoistGames 2017-12-05T21:56:41Z

It looks like you've made a good start. It's a shame that you ran into problems because the atmosphere is really nice. I look forward to seeing where you take it next.

Junk by jjjjason 2017-12-05T14:42:19Z

Nice work, it's a neat twist on a classic game. I played it a couple of times and some of the previous players definitely weren't taking it seriously! The on criticism I really have is that it would be nice to be able to skip the opening instructions once you've played it for the first time.

Dense Revolve by fiaKaiera 2017-12-05T17:53:20Z

Cool game. It took me a while to figure out how to get up onto the platform and not die but after I figured out what to do it was pretty straight forward. Unfortunately there wasn't much depth to the mechanics and I worked out a fairly dominant strategy fairly quickly. A few more levels probably would have fixed that problem though, so with a bit more time it could certainly be an interesting game. I love the art style and retro sound effects, they worked really well together. Great work!

Greedy Balloon by maoap 2017-12-05T11:22:14Z

Nice work, especially for your first jam. The balloon was a little hard to control and you have some gold bricks spawning inside walls, but other than that it was really good. I love the art style and the concept fit the theme.

Deadline by Sholf 2017-12-05T14:06:26Z

Great idea and a really fun game. I like the simple graphics and the gameplay felt well balanced.

Goblin Ascension ! by Chubby Stick 2017-12-05T14:25:31Z

That was punishingly difficult. A little extra work on the jump controls would have made it a lot nicer to play, especially since some of those jumps are pretty much pixel perfect. That said, other that the controls, it was a solid game. I liked the audio in particular. Nice work.

Information OVERLOAD by GeorgeBGreen 2017-12-04T12:55:58Z

Nice work, made me chuckle on multiple occasions. It would be nice to see how much health you have left but other than that, no complaints here.

Information OVERLOAD by GeorgeBGreen 2017-12-04T15:20:21Z

@georgebgreen, I had similar issues where I had to strip back some of the features in my entry. Really great work overall though, I love a game with a bit of humor.

Get in Shape by Prostone 2017-12-05T12:57:40Z

Great work. Unfortunately I suck at these kinds of dexterity games! The music was pleasant and the graphics were nice and clean. I couldn't really ask for much more from this kind of game. Definitely in my top 10 so far.

A Spark of Light by TurbulentWinds 2017-12-09T16:42:34Z

Cool idea and I really enjoyed the atmosphere. My only complaint was that it felt a bit hollow, in that it felt like something was missing. It would have been nice to have some other kind of challenges/goals that you have to complete during the game, or in a specific level. Overall though, I really liked the concept and had fun playing.

Retro Rocket Run! by gwolf86 2017-12-04T12:21:18Z

Thanks for the feedback @niphram. It's probably a combination of both. Handling all of those coins was a big challenge that I didn't really solve in the allotted time.

If you could let me know your system specs that would be a massive help for when I come to optimise the post-compo version.

Retro Rocket Run! by gwolf86 2017-12-04T12:35:36Z

Thanks @Niphram, much appreciated.

Retro Rocket Run! by gwolf86 2017-12-04T13:11:12Z

Thanks for the feedback @mruniverse, @bobombe, and @mess110.

There is a particle effect and warning sound when a pickup is activated, although you don't get told which one (I wanted to do additional effects for each one but ran low on time).

I'll definitely look at slowing things down in the beginning, I also want to add an in-game tutorial that pauses to explain things as the happen for the first time.

If you can't tell what powerup activated by the immediate effect then it's probably the speed boost, which makes the controls more responsive.

Retro Rocket Run! by gwolf86 2017-12-04T15:17:56Z

Yeah, managing that many coins was a real challenge @are-sundnes. I thought I'd fixed it before submitting but there's clearly still some issues on certain hardware.

Retro Rocket Run! by gwolf86 2017-12-04T22:14:59Z

Thanks for all the feedback.

@gamesplusjames, I've added a standalone version of the game for you to download and run. Let me know if there are any problems with it (I don't know why I didn't jsut put it up with the web build to be honest!)

Retro Rocket Run! by gwolf86 2017-12-04T22:57:45Z

@gamesplusjames, thanks for letting me know. Maybe the lag is just an issue with WebGL or particular browsers.

Retro Rocket Run! by gwolf86 2017-12-05T16:50:54Z

@papacheech, Was it doing that on every coin pickup or just more frequently? Picking up more coins is the only way to undo the effects of invisibility and inverted controls, so it creates a snowball effect. If it was triggering on every coin then that's definitely a bug. I saw it a couple of times whilst I was making it but could never work out what was causing it.

Retro Rocket Run! by gwolf86 2017-12-06T14:29:16Z

@360, the trick is to avoid the coins for as long as possible and don't try to undo the negative effects (just try to play with them active). Besides, the designer is always good at their own game (Fun fact, after about 2:30 mins the levels start glitching out so it becomes impossible to avoid the coins anymore. It just keeps generating the same Y shape).

I checked out your game yesterday and gave you a rating. :)

Retro Rocket Run! by gwolf86 2017-12-07T09:30:51Z

Thanks for all the continued support and feedback everyone!

@nammflow, the coins act as a multiplier to your time score. According to my maths, you'll be able to pick up an average of 200 coins before dying via their damage effects, so you then just have to stay alive long enough to get that sweet time multiplier. To beat my high score, that means staying alive for around 157 secs!

@pkenney, adding a replay key event was something I thought about adding but ran out of time to really polish the menus (they were the first thing in the game). I also wanted the score menu to have the option to take you directly back into the game, so these will definitely be something that gets added to a later release.

Retro Rocket Run! by gwolf86 2017-12-09T11:48:48Z

(@serpentworks-games, I'm working on a new version of the game and object pooling is definitely the way to go. I'm already seeing some massive improvements in performance. Thanks for the feedback.

10 inches or less by Almost Panda Studio 2017-12-06T22:29:42Z

Fantastic work. One of my favorite games from those I've played so far. The art and music are both fantastic. I love the animations and the difficulty curve is very well balanced.

Get Rich or Sink by Time Loop 2017-12-04T20:25:34Z

I really like the aesthetics of this game. It looks great. I wasn't a fan of the boat's controls but other than that I really enjoyed it.

Friends.OS by Rob White 2017-12-05T15:52:45Z

Cool, idea and very challenging. The audio was spot on and I like the visual style of the game (Is that blood on the lava lamp?). Great work and it fits the theme well.

Snèèz! by Mazzletov 2017-12-04T13:04:17Z

Nice work, I'd love to see where you take the game with a little more time. It would be good if it had a bit more strategy and some different virus types / powerups, but it's a really good start.

Robo Tomb by Xacur 2017-12-05T13:09:00Z

This is a really cool entry. It's like bomberman crossed with snake! The graphics were really nice and the sound effects did their job well.

Catamari by Kieran Newland 2017-12-05T17:31:34Z

The game is fun but the cat is quite difficult to control. Adding the ability to spin in place would definitely help with with lining up the head with the food. It's a solid game though and the art is spot on. Great work.

Feed Them by Fis 2017-12-09T09:58:36Z

Great work! The visuals are great and the controls were smooth, aiming was a little difficult though. The audio was nice but didn't really fit with the rest of the game. It was very laid back for a game that should feel quite frantic. This would make a fantastic couch co-op game, so I look forward to the inclusion of multiplayer.

SpaceCab by bobombe 2017-12-04T19:49:02Z

Nice work, this was really fun. It took me a while to figure out exactly what I had to do, so some short tutorial text would have been nice. It was also a little hard to see the brown against the black. Other than that, it was really good. I'd love to see a more polished version, I think it'd make a great mobile game.

Space War Never Ends by X Budsterized X 2017-12-09T10:25:17Z

Cool concept and fun to play. It had that "one more go" vibe which kept me playing for a while. I like the idea of the projectiles being sold objects that can interact with each other. made for a nice cascading effect and you could do some serious damage with just one swing. I wasn't a fan of the graphics, but I think that's probably just a lack of polish. Otherwise, great work! I'd love to see you take this further and polish it up.

Catch the bomb by Poroh 2017-12-11T20:24:42Z

Cool idea for updating Minesweeper. The inclusion of different characters was interesting. If you're continuing with development then maybe introduce some additional classes and allow the player to select their preferred team. I really enjoyed this and would love to see where you take it. Great work.

Smack`Em! by mess110 2017-12-04T19:57:08Z

Simple but well executed. Really loved the visuals and audio. Would love to see it developed further.

Super Power Omega OP Force Sigma: Lasers of Lightning (SPOOFSLOL) by happygreenfrog 2017-12-11T20:14:03Z

That's king of the bullet hell right there!I really love the idea of the enemies getting the power-ups at the same time as you and it means that you remain constantly under-powered due to the number of enemies on screen. The intro also made me laugh. Great job all around.

Runaway Magic by SerpentWorks Games 2017-12-09T12:03:31Z

Interesting take on the theme. The dialogue was well written and full of funny references. The game outside of the dialogue didn't really seem to do much. It looks like quite an ambitious project, so I can understand why some elements are missing. I'd love to play a later version of the game though, once you've finished adding in all the core features you wanted. It's a really creative idea.

Escape Infection! by 11tomi12 2017-12-09T12:09:39Z

Great concept and I like the mechanic for clearing the screen of viruses. I'd say that gameplay should be a little faster, mainly the players movement controls, to give you a few more options on how to avoid the incoming viruses. I really like the theme though and the music is perfectly suited to it. Great work.

Space Overflow by PoissonSoluble 2017-12-09T16:24:33Z

great idea. Once I worked out that I was trying to be as slow as possible I got some pretty decent scores. It's an interesting take on the genre and is very well presented.

Interview at Cacophony by Christoph 2017-12-04T20:35:25Z

Great work, I love the concept. It reminds me of my days back at music college! The audio was great quality, and this isn't a style of game I've really seen before. A great take on the theme.

Temple Hunt by Toccs 2017-12-05T00:04:54Z

Where are his clothes?! 🤣 I noticed a couple of issues with the collision detection and the level is a bit dark, but other than that it's really good. Great work for your first game!

DRAGLUTTONY by Reality Blind 2017-12-09T10:05:23Z

Cool concept. It's was a little difficult to get the hang of but once I had the controls down it was good fun. I really like the artwork and the audio was spot on.

Slithering Secrets by meanmon13 2017-12-05T15:33:23Z

Nice work, especially for your first game. I liked the art direction and the sound design was good, although the snake was probably a little too loud. Since everything is dark, it's pretty difficult to find your way around, so I ended up covering the same ground a few times when looking for the pickups. Other than that though it was pretty good fun.

Gophergeddon by Ham and Swiss 2017-12-05T13:26:39Z

Great work, kind of reminds me of Conways game of life but with more layers. I thought the gameplay was really well balanced and the art was great.

The Shepherd by TheTopHatNoob 2017-12-05T10:12:52Z

Great work on this entry. The herding mechanic worked well but the map was a bit too large and empty, so it was difficult to find the sheep before the wolves came. I like the fact that you included an instructions screen and the background music was really nice.

Growing Earth by TrolledWoods 2017-12-05T08:40:48Z

Great work for the amount of time you had. I'd love to see where you take it with more time.

Laser Defender by Vishal 2017-12-06T23:38:42Z

You probably shouldn't bother entering a game you made that followed a tutorial to the letter. I'd argue that you didn't actually make it, since the game is virtually identical to the original source. On a side note, the course you're following is really good and you should definitely keep going with it. Best of luck with your learning and come back next time with a game of your own design. P.S. You don't seem to have finished the section you're working on and haven't exported your build to WebGL, so your game is currently unplayable (you'll need to upgrade to Unity 5+ for that).

Greedy Buggy by Are Sundnes 2017-12-04T12:33:14Z

Great work, I love the idea. It would be nice to see some slightly less punishing controls (maybe adjust the tilt based on speed, so going slow and steady is an option). I managed to score 6 coins, mostly through rushing the next coin to reset the physics. There's no way I'd have got that many using any other method! :D

Great art and I love the sound effects! The controls are a bit awkward, it would have been nice to have movement using WASD since the mouse is involved. A fun game overall though, nice work.

Great work. Played havoc with my RSI though! I found that watching videos to recover happiness was only worth doing when you were at zero productivity (right after you get promoted), that way there's no down-side. if you take the game further, maybe implement a system that stops (or discourages) you from slacking off right after you get promoted.
