A little shaky in the browser ; but playable! Nice music, and nice sounds. The visuals are minimalistic but do the job. As for the gameplay, it wasn't clear what the objective was - the ratio text/gameplay was too high IMHO.

tvance 2017-12-04 18:23

Really cool lighting effects. It was pretty laggy. That might be on me though.

tom-panton 2017-12-04 18:23

Really low framerate on the web version, making it very difficult to actually play. I didn't get to play much of the game because of that, but the music was fantastic!

hawksandwich 2017-12-04 18:28

The music and sound effects are nice. Here's a problem that isn't so much about the game but rather about code: it's too laggy. With 100 enemies, the game shouldn't be laggy. The way to avoid this is: instead of having so much code on each enemy that has "Update()" in their script, have a "controller" script that has a single "Update()" function that does the thinking for every enemy. This will allow you to have potentially thousands of enemies in a game like this with little to no performance cost. Thirdly, there's too much text. The first thing people want to do when they load up your action-shooter is to action-shoot! Maybe fill them in on just the controls as they need them, but keep the story to a minimum OR fill them in on it after they're already hooked into your game. Either way, good job with ludum dare :)

gris 2017-12-04 18:43

@ace17 @tvance @tom-panton Thanks for the early comments. It is laggy on HTML5 I'm seriously thinking on taking down the link since it really doesn't show the game. @hawksandwich Thank you for the advice. I agree there is too much text. I realized that towards the end. I'm not sure to what extent I can change that now without it being cheating.

mazzletov 2017-12-04 19:24

Damn, this was a nice game. I really liked the chasing mechanics and the additional blindness (dark)! Some extra artwork would have been very nice. I really enjoyed it ;) Check out my game in my bio!

pkenney 2017-12-04 20:22

Nice work! The lighting and perspective were nice, and the audio did a job of rounding out the atmosphere. Most calming slaughter ever, thanks to the music?

Mechanic was straightforward but I liked the twists you threw in, with the energy management, and then the light source competing with shooting for energy. It was also a nice decision to not force me to hunt stragglers down, but only achieve a certain threshold of death - I feel like that was a bad trap that you could have fallen into but sidestepped.

I experienced the wall-passthrough bug, here after this moment: https://imgur.com/iGaGk8M

There were enough guys that it was getting real choppy, and then I lurched through the wall into them middle of that crowd of idiots. Let's just say the battle did not go my way after that!

Good difficulty balance, I had to retry a few times but not dishearteningly often.

Nice entry!

The universe didn't seem to want me to play this game (it didn't work properly on the web version on my computer, and then I had to mess about with security preferences to actually make the application run), but when I finally got to play it, it was definitely worth the hassle! I think the lighting was really well executed; the shadows and the dim blue glow emitted by the player character look especially good. The music and sound effects are excellent, and I especially liked the satisfying 'thud' sound that it makes when you shoot through a wall to tunnel through it. However, to nitpick a bit, I felt that the enemies were a little bit dull; they don't really do much but wander towards you and occasionally shoot. I think a little more variation in their behaviour would have made it more interesting to fight them (e.g. trying to dodge your bullets, different methods of attacking you). Overall a lot of fun, though :)

Just so you know: the link for Mac is missing the 'h' in 'https'.

gris 2017-12-04 21:01

@pkenney Thanks for the kind words! The bug occurs with the outerwalls mostly. Eventually I'll optimize so that it becomes less laggy.

@tom-panton I really appreaciate that you took the time to give it a second run. Thanks a lot man. Link to Mac corrected ;)

You have some really nice mechanics and world stuff going on here. I like that you can break down walls and funnel enemies. The day/night cycle stuff is great, I imagine once you get to a certain level that actually affects the creatures (or maybe it already does? I just didn't notice a state change).

Most of your Feeback worked for me tho, the visual cues of enemies changing colors ect.

Great stuff, could see myself playing a more polished version of this!

jcmonkey 2017-12-05 02:17

interesting game, though i didnt feel the flash light was needed at all because the mobs were lit up

nillard 2017-12-05 10:45

Didn't expect a bunch of blocks to make moody shadows! Never really got difficult. Enemies spawned slowly and your gun being out of energy didn't slow me down too much.

simone 2017-12-05 12:06

Nice little game. Polished, entertaining. Did his job on entertaining me 5 mins before becoming an intergalattic criminal :) The existence of some kind of "story" is definitely a plus.

machocodes 2017-12-05 16:13

Very minimalistic yet still fun in some way

simonbeats 2017-12-05 16:30

Love your soundtrack, the blindness effect is great as well, overall you did a pretty great job!

amigopadilha 2017-12-05 16:34

Cool game, nice concept and mechanics! Great job

nick-kane 2017-12-05 16:35

Fun game :) - does look similar to our game! Great job!

mathiouza 2017-12-05 16:38

Cool but not enough elements of gameplay in my view. And you did not add some kind of visual or audio effet when doing something good, like killing, winning or get nearer of the goal. Dispite that, the game is polished, the music works well with the game, and the idea is fun.

Overall cool game ! Keep coding :)

tay 2017-12-05 16:38

I really liked the idea behind this game, I just believe it got some problems. Most of the time I was just running around shooting everything I saw unless there were less then 10, the angry mechanic didn't really bother me. The graphics were nice, I liked that you could destroy the environment. Pretty good overall :3

shinyogre 2017-12-05 17:05

So I liked this one. "Population Control" being applied to top-down shooting mechanics makes me feel like a villain, evil. Adding to that effect is the fact that the people are not aggressive from the start. I especially like that they seem to gradually become aware of their massacre, and will fade to red and commence chasing you.

The need to shoot through walls adds to the feeling of villainy too!

Even though the game (even the standalone) has performance issues, I think there is a solid concept here. Some ideas: perhaps some people will chase the player, and some will run and/or hide (simply invert the chase AI you have). And perhaps the people are harder to find at night.

Good effort!

cogcomp 2017-12-05 19:39

Really nice and atmospheric style. Great work!

enot487 2017-12-05 20:10

First of all, the music is really cool. The graphics are pretty neat. At level 2, it is said about updating the weapon behind the wall, but I don't understand what that means. I think, if you increase the speed of the enemies, gameplay would be more fun. Good game!

antoine-vion 2017-12-05 20:41

Hi very cool shoot and music ! i liked the style ! gg !

emilio-segura 2017-12-05 20:51

Really like the neon aesthetics when it goes dark. There are some performance issues on my end, but it's still pretty fun. The fact that they didn't attack me at first was a surprise for me, even more when I remembered I had to lower their population! The game got a bit challenging for me at the second level. All in all, pretty solid concept, cool aesthetics, even if a bit simple, I like simple, and atmosphere.

hiken 2017-12-05 21:26

The chorus in the music is so great, I found some save spot where I've could clean up without any move, otherwise is a good game !

pedro-miranda 2017-12-06 12:11

Nice entry! I like the graphics but it could have some kind of light at night. Overall, nice game :D

xoidberg 2017-12-06 16:22

A minimalistic approach for a game jam is always good :) Some light at night would really be nice :D

lukbebalduke 2017-12-06 21:36

Pretty cool game, a classic top-down shooter but it works! Nice job!

budgiem2 2017-12-07 00:25

Great music and sounds. I feel like the game got a bit too dark at night though

antti-tiihonen 2017-12-07 07:16

It's a neatly executed idea. The "waiting while enemies calm down" -tactic felt like the more boring way to play so I always just went full aggro and died almost immediately

drtizzle 2017-12-07 14:19

Nice concept! It took some time to get used to, but after I "got it" it was a lot of fun to play! The visuals are nice, but the day/night transitions feel a bit too sudden. It would be nice (but very hard to implement and get right) if you could sneak up on an enemy, and kill him silently :)

Overall well done!

rahul-rajput 2017-12-07 19:57

Guys please look at my game @ace17 @tvance @drtizzle @hiken @enot487 please guys I am new here

tvance 2017-12-07 20:12

Sorry @rahul-rajput, no windows here. Congratulations and good luck!

gris 2017-12-07 23:36

@rahul-rajput I rated your game. I'm quite new myself but I'll give you some tips that I've learned these past 3 jams: 1. It's better to advertise your game on the main feed since everyone can see it there. Maybe put a picture and a link to the game and ask people to rate it, if you do this in someones game feed not a lot of people are going to see. 2. This game jam is based on a strong community( there is no prize, just the joy of making games and sharing)if you rate other games and try to give helpful comments people usually return the favor. 3. The way for you to appear high up in the games list is for you to rate a lot of games. This way your game will be more visible and you'll get more ratings. 4. The first few days after the jam are the busiest ones since everyone is still hyped about the event. Focus your efforts here. Try to rate and comment 20 games in the first 2-3 days.

As for right now you rated 3.5 games and received 3.5 ratings try to rate more games and leave helpful comments and you'll get to the 20 ratings target soon.

Good luck!

robert-collings 2017-12-08 19:49

Good game, music too peaceful when killing enemies in my opinion, i like the art style could have been a little more detailed in the landscape though. I like the concept though and was fun to play.

tschery 2017-12-08 23:51

I like the atheistic of it getting dark and the enemies becoming more visible!

chyme 2017-12-09 04:47

This was a cool take on the classic top-down shooter! I really like (what I think is) the day/night cycle. Also the enemies attacking you if you kill too many of them makes sense and is a great mechanic. Really well done!

ace17 2017-12-09 10:00

Hi @rahul-rajput, I'd like to play your game ... however you only published a Windows version, which I don't use.

gwolf86 2017-12-09 12:39

Really like the idea and the limited ammo forces you to select your targets carefully. The inclusion of the day/might cycle was cool, but I didn't see much variation in gameplay between the two (other than just the light). I like the fact that you could destroy the terrain but it did present a problem in some levels, where you could effectively bottleneck the enemy and then just blast away until you win the level. You could fix this by making the enemies potentially damage terrain over time. Great work overall though, I really enjoyed playing it.

joror 2017-12-09 21:12

Effective use of light + obfuscation (trees) to make this genocide more difficult! :D

2017-12-20 21:11

This game was awesome but I think it will better if you include the arrow or shooting target
