First I tried the linux64 compiled version, but it complained about missing libSDL2_image-2.0.so.0, so I tried to compile it myself. Had to install libsdl2-image-dev (not 1.2 like your instructions say) and it compiled, but then all I get when I run it is "Failed to open a file in config.list!".
@deshipu Where did you download the source? GitHub version should have config.list and other required files, and so should the Linux version on itch.io, but the source version on itch.io does not have any asset files. Also, did you try the pre-built Linux version after installing the correct version of sdl_image?
Also, thanks for correcting that library name. I have built the libraries from source so I didn't know which names Ubuntu has for them!
I think I should add the .so files to the tar.gz archive, I just didn't have time to do that yet.
(The game was developed on Linux, so it should work...)

I got the pre-build version to work by symlinking the .so files to different names that your binary expected.

These graphics are stunning! I especially liked the transitions between the different sky colours.
The graphics are great! The gameplay using only one button was a bold move, and I think it could have worked, but it felt like the enemies were placed in impossible-to-avoid positions next to each other, and it was just too frustrating for me. I wish I made it to the "end". :P
Not sure what the theme fits in with this one -- I'm guessing something in the ending, but I kept getting enemies spawning in impossible positions (tree + flying fish) so I couldn't get there. :(

The game looks great, but I was kind of expecting some music/SFX... Also, stuff kept spawning in combinations that were impossible to get past. Visually this game is amazing, but I just wish that I wouldn't have to get lucky to get far in the game.
**This could be a mobile game.** Okay, I know it sounds weird as a lot of endless runners are already in the mobile market but hear me out here.
* Yes, I said that the game could be a mobile game not because of the money collecting scheme, but for a different reason: the mechanics. Jani, you made yourself a multi-purpose game based on one button. You can jump, double-jump and glide. Yes it's simple but it's pretty effective. If you continue on this, you can make the hold with no jump as a slide and the third tap to quickly get down.
* The pace is weird and cheap. We know that it's almost unavoidable to have that cheap difficulty on the endless runner but you do need to fix that if you plan to move this on. There's a lot of unavoidable situations here.
It's simple, it's a quick game and it's good. A neat entry for the Ludum Dare.
@evandowning The theme fits this way: the more money you have, the harder ("worse") the game gets - if not impossible.
Nice and fun game, man. GJ!

Simple and fun! Love the art. Neat game!

Hey thanks for playing my game, I'm here to return the favour . I like the graphics and all the animations are very smooth. This game is actually pretty polished. Of course, the jumps and the game in general would have more juice if there were some sound effects, but otherwise great job!

Like the game, works well for only having one button for the user input. Wish the enemies didn't spawn in places that were impossible to dodge. Solid game otherwise!

Beautiful game. The lack of sounds was a bit jarring if only because the visuals scream "The sound will be awesome!", but it's nothing off the game itself. I get the game gets harder the more coins you collect, but I only lasted a few seconds each run anyway. Infinite runners usually have the hook of unlocking things if you get so far/so many coins. The lack of this hook makes the game feel unrewarding.
However, controls are great, graphics are splendid, frame rate is awesome, even a couple of simple sounds and this could easily be converted in an infinite runner that goes against the theme. ;)

One of the best looking submission so far! The animations are really charming! I also love the sense of humor, along with the great "hints" when you die. Would've been even better if it had sound. Great game!
@kbjwes77 I probably would have improved the enemy spawn generator if I had had more time, but I had to rush to finish the game by the deadline.
@4kbshort Audio is one of those things I was going to add, but I didn't have time (once again), not even for simple sound effects. Also, not adding sound made the engine a little more stable (not sure why, though) and reduced the amount of required .dll files.
I know you've heard it before, but the art is beautiful. It's a really good game, and that you motivates the player to collect more coins, when it makes the level harder, is genius. Although I miss some sound and music. Too bad you didn't have time. The collision is also not on point all the time, but still it is one of the best ludum dare 40 game I've played so far.
This looks great. I guess the moral of the story is that having too much money is bad for you. Damn shame about having no sounds, because the game is crying out for a chiptune.
Really nice graphics in this runner. Got up to 31 coins. Man its tough. Sometimes there are obstacles that are impossible to dodge, such as consecutive rods from the ground, a ground pound/dash option would be great. Wish it was also a bit more zoomed out so that obstacles can be anticipated. Needs some sounds to make it a more complete game.

Loos awesome, plays smoothly and it's addictive. It's really hard, but I'll keep trying later. It's sad that it doesn't have any sound.

First I want to say I really enjoyed the game and the graphics are very nice! I also enjoyed how there was only one "function"/"control" in the game, it made it very simple to understand yet hard to master. I did not notice any bugs with the exception of when the red-orange guy was so low I hit him without jumping but I'm not sure if that intentional. Anyway a really great game! :)

So simply fun & addictive!
I feel like flower monsters could be a bit more fair, though. Like somehow signal in advance when are they going to jump and how high the jump will be. Or maybe I'm just missing something. Also, it would be good to display how much money you collected on game over, because there's no time to look when playing.
Great job!

Nice job with the one-button interface. It's very satisfying when it's not impossible. I'm not sure how it conforms to the theme? Does anything change as I acquire my fat stacks?
@handle The game gets harder - and eventually impossible - as you collect more money.
First of all, probably spent more time trying to get it to compile on mac than I ended up playing it. Been too long since I did anything SDL related (probably like 15 years or so) but I was determined to play it. I was beckoned by the pretty pixel graphics and the fellow finn dev at the helm. And gotta show respect for the dying breed of C devs that are still out there. But SDL_image wasn't being a pal so in the end I booted up Windows. Look at what you made me do! :pensive:
So then I actually got to play it. Goes without saying that it looks absolutely fantastic. Red houses and all... isn't that like a golden rule of GeoGuessr that, if there are red houses, it's Finland. Could have used some sounds.
So I ended up actually following the games lead for quite a while and tried to get as many coins as I could. Not quite sure how many I got at best but it was enough for the game to become pretty much impossible. I was gonna complain about those jumpy plants as well, but they didn't really bother me on the no money run. But at first those were the bane of my existance. Until about 30 coins those were pretty much only thing that got me injured at all (well except for some less frequent cheap traps). They were a straight up gamble. There wasn't enough time to react to their jump height.
So while downloading all those frameworks and fiddling with the makefile, I had plenty of time to stare at your page description. A thing I don't even usually do (cause I'm a rebel :sunglasses:). You kinda gave away "the secret" there. I think what you had in game would have been enough. Sure, some people would have maybe missed it and will probably still do but it would have been more rewarding to find out myself.
Good job!
**edit:** Why on earth did you opt out on graphics category?
@antti-haavikko "Why on earth did you opt out on graphics category?" Oh dear god no, did I do that? I'm pretty sure I opted out just the audio... Stupid me
Well, thank you for telling me. Let's hope the future players will rate the graphics...
EDIT: Hmm, it says 27 people have rated the graphics, so maybe I just opted it out when editing the page an hour ago.
The graphics are amazing! The single button control scheme was really cool. The game getting harder as I collected coins was great. Would've loved some music/sfx with it, but time restraints. Overall it's a really addictive and fun game to play!

Fun and hard endless runner! I agree that the "muncher" type enemy should telegraph its jump, also, sometimes you get to a situation where you absolutely cannot avoid taking a hit which sucks...
Overall great game though, well done!
@jani-nykanen Nice! I gave you a rating there now as well.

Fun game! I love the art but missed the sound. The game felt a little hard. Were there heart pickups?
Game looks fun, but on linux I got an error while loading shared libraries: libSDL2-2.0.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Good use of the theme. I enjoyed the pixel art. The jumping was really responsive, nice job. Adding some, even a little audio would have made this so much better!
That was an amazing game! I really enjoyed the graphics and was really impressed by the way the difficulty scaled while still being procedurally generated. It took me a bit to figure out the trick (I liked the misdirection you did!) though I still wasn't able to beat it (I'm terrible at this style of game though). Amazing job, very well done. (Audio would also have been awesome!)
Quite an enjoyable and nice-looking game. Really like the double jumping and spinning, and that there are multiple lives so it doesn't end right away.
Very well made, but I think this suffers a bit from the procedural generation. I ran into spots too often where there was actually no way to avoid getting hit (giant pole creature + flying fish, etc.).

I need to say that the game is really brutal for endless runner. The graphics and animation are really cute and the color scheme is really bright and cheerful :D If you add some sound and background music and port it for Android, you'll have an extremely fun and addicting mobile game. Well done!

This game looks beautiful, the animations are awesome and the controls handle brilliantly. The only downside is the lack of music to bring it all together. Otherwise, Fantastic work.

Love the graphics! Low-res with lots of animations always looks good in my book :P It definitely would've been better with some audio though. Anyways, good job!
Love the classic feel. Awesome and fun

Graphics are super cool and interesting. I think that once I got a hang of the controls I was having a good time doing all of the jumps and flips.
I really like this game and the graphics are awesome! Too bad there's no sound... The gameplay works really well, which I would not have expected with just one key as input. Very well done! :)
Nice retro graphics! Enjoyable to play.. congrats!

Loved the game! Nice feel to it and nice control. Audio and better enemy spawn would make it amazing! Well done! (Also, 2 questions: 1) Are you wearing a pajama right now? 2) have you removed the dog food from your ear yet though? bcs that doesn't sound like a good place to keep it. Just a tip.)
First thing to say the art is amazing, so cute, one of my favorites arts so far, the game is pretty well done, the controls were kinda hard at first, but after that I could really enjoy this gem, you have a game with a lot of potencial, I can see that becoming a bigger game in the future, anyway, you did a great job, congratulations !
The Graphics are awesome. Nice work. I like the move set (jump, double jump ande helicopter). thx for the work! :)
Really really cool game ! Too bad that there is no sounds ... It could improve the quality of the game like ... errr ... a rocket ? (this metaphor is weird ^^') Graphics are impressive and the gameplay is awesome !
Cool game ! Keep coding !
Awesome graphics and retro style. Like others have noted however, the presence of SFX and music would improve the game immensely. I really liked the movement mechanics, controls and the character animations. But the way these mechanics are implemented with the enemy spawning just doesn't feel right and is more frustrating than fun.
graphics were impressive - but the game was needing sound - nice job
Funny and cute game. Reminds me some mix of flappy bird and canabalt. Can't figure out how this game connected with theme but it pretty fun itself. My max is about 20 coins!

Very solid execution on a fun and simple idea. Well done! If it only had sound and some music. :D Also kudos for writing it in C! It was my first serious language after QuickBasic. Fond memories of coding in DOS with it!
This game is very nice! You had an interesting take on the theme, and the graphics are wonderful. I know other have mentioned it, but the enemies felt cheap. I found the jumping follower-things particularly frustrating, as I could never tell how high they were going to jump. I did like how gathering more coins makes the game faster, giving the player more practice avoiding enemies, and eventually making it easier to avoid them when also avoiding coins.
All in all great work, the places this game does well at it really shines, and I feel the rest could be polished up nicely.
Liked the way you implemented the one button mechanic, worked really well. Did have issues with the enemies spawn points though as at times it was impossible to miss a combination of theme. Graphics are great and I just wish there was some sounds to compliment them cause the design and animations are fantastic.
