LD40 — The more you have, the worse it is

Feathers by MikomiKisomi 2017-12-06T03:06:53Z

I really enjoyed this, and great use of the theme! It has a charming story and I got really invested just a few parts in. I echo the formatting comment about the link-reveals; they could be their own paragraphs or maybe a different color to help make them stand out.

Really nice entry though!

Orbits by tuism 2017-12-09T00:11:09Z

I was gunna say I wish I could up the mouse sensitivity, but your post-compo version already does that! 8D

The aesthetic works really well, and being able to challenge yourself by throwing a ton of planets up at once is super neat. I'd love to see this expanded upon with stages of "here's one planet, two planets, 5, etc" and maybe some increase of "oh yeh you've acquired so much gravitational mass you start pulling other objects like nebulas or stars towards you.

All in all, I love this game and it's great fun and addicting!

Orbits by tuism 2017-12-09T05:53:12Z

@tuism Yeah! As a way to ramp up progression or something of the sort. It does totally work on its own though.

Cherry Creek by SecondDimension 2017-12-06T22:00:56Z

This was a pleasure to play! There's a calm atmosphere to it, and the puzzles scale really well with the difficulty. I do think there should be a way to rotate the pieces the other way; I found I wasted a lot of clicks trying to turn pieces 270 degrees.

Otherwise, I really enjoyed it! Great job!

Kritter Keeper by Archimagus 2017-12-09T09:58:42Z

Handles the theme really well! It's a little slow to start but quickly becomes overwhelming. I didn't quite realize I could heal mobs until late, given that there was no indication, like their needs, to do so. The color change was a little lost on me at first. I do really like you have keybindings as well as usable UI buttons.

Cute game though a little more frustrating at the higher scores than fun, per say.

A Stack of Gifts by interface 2017-12-08T04:20:41Z

I am terrible at this, but I love the concept and its super fun. Good job!

Prinsen Gulden by King Kujito 2017-12-15T05:17:22Z

You have a really nice concept here, and I love the dedication you've put in. When playing it I found the controls to be a little unintuitive - I'm using to using space to jump, not up - and you slide a little much with the movement, but it's otherwise a solid movement feature set. I really enjoy that as you pick up more gold, the levels change and shift to have more dangers. I would say, that there should be more feedback for when these things happen; I died a few times when I wouldn't have because there were suddenly spikes where I was trying to jump.

The combat is a little awkward, especially with the crouching, but it's got a solid start!

Great job :3

Trial of the Reaper by Cliff Lee CL 2017-12-08T08:33:02Z

Very satisfying just dashing around swinging the scythe at people and watching them fly. A little therapeutic even! I echo the comment above about the art style is a little too... bright and cheery for this, but at the same time it adds a level of hilarity to it - to me - and makes flying around reaping countless souls at once amazing.

Great job!

Mr. Capital! by fluidvolt 2017-12-09T11:13:53Z

I found this to be really frustrating at times. The movement was a little too fast and too slippery for the precision of the jumps you had to do at times, and I found the constant trial and error tedious. I wasn't really that pleased or impressed to have finished a level; I was more going "thank goodness that's over with". The level end text was super antialiased and hard to read.

I really like the aesthetics and music of the game, and the overall concept is on point! Super challenging though!

House Party by Richard141289 2017-12-08T05:06:38Z

Neat concept! Wish the UI was bigger or not in the upper corner; as you lose health you can't see what going on there! The procedural animations are super hilarious!

IN-FAMOUS by Cameron Taylor 2017-12-09T11:27:13Z

I really like the concept here, but there's not much else to it. Which I suppose is the point. Interesting entry.

Ascension by Roberto Romao 2017-12-06T00:04:56Z

Neat little clicker game! I wasn't sure what I was doing at first but figured it out quickly enough. Good job!

Complicity Inc. by rhythmlynx 2017-12-09T11:44:00Z

I rather enjoyed this! I would have liked to have had more time to figure out how the society and population tasks worked. I couldn't really figure them out until the end, and then I got fired after I couldn't keep the power on! I think your use of the theme is super well done here and the whole game is well put together.

Great job!

ZhenCo Ghost Management by amras0000 2017-12-08T22:23:25Z

This is super innovative game! It's got a steep learning curve, but its also immensely satisfying to solve a puzzle. The spirits move a little on the slow side, and the UI can be really confusing. I'd love to see a more in-depth in-game tutorial; the ones you have work, but I definitely didn't know I had to type actual code at first. I'd also really like a 'reset level' after you've hit start. It was clunky to have to exit to the main level then reselect the one I was working to get back to the 'edit the code' screen. A way to toggle between start and code would go a long way to easing the learning curve too.

Great submission, and great complexity for 48 hrs of work!

Potion Commotion by boaheck-artgent 2017-12-07T00:30:03Z

Great little game! I had a hard time with playing it on keyboard, but I am almost apparently terrible at platformers with a keyboard XD;

Love the use of the shader with the outline, it makes it super unique.

Great sense of exploration and level design. Well done!

Sailor Wolf by Pashok 2017-12-07T00:18:11Z

Such sad music for it! I couldn't quite pick up cats out of the water but I got the hang of sailing and breaking up cat fights just fine. Also, you used Pusheens so honestly that's an extra star in my book.

So cute!

WAVEFORM by pogo 2017-12-07T01:01:55Z

Loving the aesthetics and music here. The gameplay is super smooth. I wish the bits you picked up when you defeat enemies did something, like power up your shots, a special, or gave health back. I had an enemy spawn on top of me at one point, as I'd moved around beforehand, but it wasn't terrible.

I think with a bit more polish and further development, this could become a great game to release fully!

LD40 Compo: The Greed Run by vkmicro 2017-12-08T08:44:34Z

I really like the concept and ideas behind this! I've not encountered a platformer where the gravity and speed change before, and even though jumps are a little 'floaty' it still feels super cool to be able to jump and fly across like half the level at once. There's a lot of stuff to try to find and find coins for, and it really prompts for exploration.

Things are a little buggy yes, but I like that you added an 'if you're stuck on the floor, jump!' indicator and just tied it into the story. A nice little touch for a bug, that is now a feature!

This is really impressive and fun for only 15 hrs of work~ Great job!

The Weissman Challenge by CaramelCode 2017-12-07T02:32:46Z

A typing game! You don't see these too often anymore. It was super interesting to play, though I expected it to work more like a typing test (where you have to type the characters in a sequence).

Great submission!

Justify the Means by Goat Toaster Games 2017-12-08T04:35:07Z

D: I really want to play this, because it looks super cool and us narratively driven jam games need to stick together! And then my antivirus decided it could not be trusted and now will not let me play the game. :/

It looks amazing though and the little bit I did get to play was really solid!

WeedControl by Marc Grabow 2017-12-08T08:27:22Z

I like the harvest moon esk vibe going on here. I did have one pumpkin get stuck in the growing stage, but I liked the animations and having to keep the weeds in check. Maybe use the scroll wheel to quickly cycle through tools next time?

That said, I rather enjoyed growing my plants and plucking weeds! Good job!

Tower of Mana by Pedro Henrique Cesar 2017-12-09T11:22:07Z

I really like the concept behind this, as well as the art and music, but I agree that the mana bar fills up just way too fast. I ended up spending more time staring at the bar than the environment and didn't really feel like I could stop to assess what was going on. I found it actually sort of frustrating the jump amount changed with how much mana you had, and spent most of my time wondering why I couldn't jump higher.

That said, I really like it for what it is. I just wish I could have seen more of the game before giving it up in frustration.

KITTEN SITTER by sadsmile 2017-12-07T23:54:23Z

Cute little kitty game! I found I couldn't pick up cats when they were hungry, on the HTML5 version, and potentially while they were in the bathroom?

A great little idea though! Was fun until my cats started getting hungry and refused to be picked up xD

Problematic Ownage by dukeaccent 2017-12-06T22:09:08Z

I found a couple of bugs where even when I was at work I was losing rage? Usually after having upgraded parts -WHILE- at work.

Otherwise, I got a kick out of this little game!

Sanguinite by Wheffle 2017-12-08T04:50:02Z

Great entry! I feel it fits in very well with the theme and is very well put together! The SFX and music are a bit loud in my opinion, and I kept feeling like I should have been hitting enemies when I wasn't (which is possibly me just being bad at aiming ).

All in all, a great job! I love being able to drag your broken drones back to replenish a life, it's a nice touch.

A Game About Cats by SlimothyJ 2017-12-05T03:18:47Z

This was super stressfull but super fun~! I could def see this played on a touchscreen or tablet to great results! Good job 8D

Desert Express by TerraPass 2017-12-08T02:44:16Z

A little too simple for my tastes, but its a great starting place. I'd love to see a score, or different enemies or some sort of "you gotta get X amount to the stop". It's got great potential though!

Grooblins! by ahintoflime 2017-12-08T04:55:55Z

I welcome our Grooblin overlords with open arms. This was a great little game!

THE LOST SON by pareidolia 2017-12-07T02:51:36Z

There is some decent potential here, but after five minutes I got lost and couldn't figure out what it was I supposed to be doing. My first attempt, I got stuck in a door that wouldn't open and had to restart the game. Once I figured out how to open them, I ended up in a room where there was a jump I couldn't make even at a run. Is there some sort of double jump?

It looks visually very nice and there's good audio to it, but I got frustrated with the game play.

Bunnyfication by dekart 2017-12-08T11:57:38Z

This was super cute. The swol rabbits made me laugh. I will say the rabbits have very small hitboxes, and I couldn't quite figure out how to complete the quests at first before I realized the little rabbit on the checklist changed for what you were supposed to find.

Not sure what the alien blue rabbits were for, they just sat their and staaaaared.

Overall, I really enjoyed this game!

Captain Capsize by Lance Krasniqi 2017-12-06T21:52:58Z

I like the idea behind the mechanics, but the camera shake as the ship tried to right itself after moving the cannon was really disorienting. It was hard to tell when I was turning at times though. Maybe a little line that shows the direction the boat's going?

Otherwise, love the graphics and music! It's super well put together, especially for your first jam!

A Spark of Light by TurbulentWinds 2017-12-09T10:37:32Z

This has a great atmosphere, and I really enjoy the simplicity of it. I was a little lost at first as to what I was shooting for goal wise - was I looking for a way past the walls, or simply collecting balls of light? It does get rather bright at the higher light levels, but it impresses the 'brightness' aspect of the game.

Movement is decent, though I had a hard time finding where I was in relation to other objects at first. You blend a little too well into the backdrop. I did sort of expect the walls themselves to steal light from you, but they do not seem to? I think it would be interesting to see the walls leach light as well.

I really like your idea about a 'light hunter' square, as well! I think it'll add a good level of tension to the game.

All in all, a really good job for your first LD!

Retro Rocket Run! by gwolf86 2017-12-09T10:45:39Z

Neat little game, I'm sorry about the lag! You might be able to fix that using object pooling, so you're really only ever respawning the same objects over and over again, instead of spawning and destroying them afterward. It doesn't cut down on the collisions that are going on ( since that's a -lot- of collisions in a short amount of time ) but it should help on the backend some.

I'd love some more feedback on what powerup I've got. I kept getting inverted controls, but not really knowing I had them, and smashing into the bumpers trying to move one way or the other. I definitely love the inclusion of power-ups though, it adds a good amount of depth to the game.

Great job for your first entry!

Mobs by Iferit 2017-12-09T09:36:47Z

This game was hilarious! I loved the fact the sprites just would sometimes fall over and lay on the floor. It escalated so quickly too! Great game for the jam! I had a blast playing this! 8D

Caffeinated Alien by Justin Toyo 2017-12-06T01:28:20Z

I liked playing your game, though I will echo that the movement speed is super fast at times. Also I found that enemies like to get stuck on objects if the object is between you and the enemy; which led to some tense attempts to get health pickups with like seven spiders and tanks all stacked on it.

Fun to play with a great use of the theme though!

Feed Them by Fis 2017-12-06T10:57:48Z

Super Smash Food Wars! This was super fun! Could use a little extra polish with some SFX, but otherwise its super solid! Great job!

Forgotten Cubes by kariamoss 2017-12-09T22:38:00Z

It's got great potential! I found a few issues: - The A key does not actually move you backward! - On the third level, one of my green cubes sank into the environment and would no longer jump, making it impossible to finish.

I do echo that levels 1 and 2 can be 'cheated' by simply getting all your cubes in a line and timing your jumps properly. That said, it's got a great concept and idea behind it and I'd love to see it expanded upon!

Great job on creating a really nice atmosphere and mood too, with the assets and lighting!

Goodnight Sheep by littlecloudflower 2017-12-16T09:04:59Z

Oh my goodness, this hit me in the chest. I've been there, lying awake, with spiraling thoughts and frustration. There was a time during college where this was me, and oh my. It brought me right back to it.

It is simple, and it is simply clicking sheep - and I did find I had to wait for some of the sheep to meander somewhere I could click - but I think the emotion it invokes makes up for it.

A really good job guys!

Observer: Bunker Sim by Thomas Higgins 2017-12-06T01:40:39Z

Interesting concept! I had a bunch of events happen, but couldn't seem to place items in rooms? I built a bunch but never quite figured out how to add food or people to them. I definitely like the idea though!

Block Pilot by seppi562 2017-12-07T00:35:35Z

I agree with a lot of the above. I like the look and feel, but it's really hard to distinguish the enemies from the background with the camera perspective and their coloring. I had a lot of issue with framerate too - played the Web version - and I ended up dying even though I was shooting at enemies approaching me.

There's a great concept behind this, it just needs some polish!

Inky Pinky Square by Psychedelia 2017-12-06T21:37:49Z

I really like the concept, though oh wow the difficulty spikes super fast once even one friend spawns. It got great potential though! Good job!

Runaway Magic by SerpentWorks Games 2017-12-05T02:59:36Z

Found a bug with some of the dialogue and the end of the game and will be uploading a new build momentarily!

Runaway Magic by SerpentWorks Games 2017-12-05T23:31:39Z

@goplite @piootrek :0 OH WOW I will go fix that! Thanks for letting me know!

Runaway Magic by SerpentWorks Games 2017-12-06T02:39:12Z

@jack-maxwell Haha yeah I left it for last if I was going to make it fancy, and the text I originally used was unreadable, so I had to go simple. Thanks for the feedback!

Runaway Magic by SerpentWorks Games 2017-12-06T04:21:39Z

Thanks @thristhart !

Runaway Magic by SerpentWorks Games 2017-12-07T00:07:09Z

@maksim-nikolaev Aw thanks! To be honest, having assets I didn't have to make myself helped XD;;

@juxipolo Yeah the game does lack decent feedback, visually and soundwise. After the voting, I'm gunna polish it up with some better player feedback. :)

Runaway Magic by SerpentWorks Games 2017-12-08T07:07:01Z

@professor You're welcome!

@tinykidtoo ;-D

@sorlok Yeah it wasn't super clear how the choices would actually affect things. I'm glad you enjoyed though!

@Wheffle YES! Maximum hilarity achieved!

@fangzhangmnm Thanks! I didn't use any voxels to make this! Just modular 3D assets :3

@Blazen Thanks!

Runaway Magic by SerpentWorks Games 2017-12-09T09:08:27Z

@ted @wakka2 Thanks!

@simonhutchinson I swear it's got music! XD I'm glad it was funnier than your expectations!

@cliff-lee-cl You know, that's a really good point. It's definitely lacking something, and had I not decided to try to create a dialogue system halfway through the jam I would have put into place some other mechanics that I'd been prototyping the day before. It's something I'm looking into to expand and polish on outside of the jam. Thanks for the honest critique!

Mo' Gold, Mo' Dragons by tvance 2017-12-08T08:57:43Z

Oh my, my fingers do not know how to move the arrow in the right direction XD; This is super simple and challenging, but it's got some really awesome tense gameplay and just the right amount of challenge I think. The music is a nice backdrop for moving around avoiding flying lizards who like shinies.

Nice little dragon game! Good job!

Voxel Mob Arena by Bartosz 2017-12-09T10:59:09Z

Interesting little game! The WebGL menu is a little squished in the window. I found that enemies didn't seem to die as quickly as I expected them to at times, where they seemed sort of bullet spoungey before dying, especially with dual pistols.

The collision on the platforms is a little wonky too. I kept getting stuck on the sides of objects trying to jump on top of them, and sort of studdered my way down the wall. Not game breaking, but noticable.

At one point I was pushed off the map and respawned in the most interesting of locations:

voxelmob.png

They just kept spawning and then some of them to the left kept exploding off-screen? By the time the FPS was down to about 10, the group was a giant mass of green and red squares, and I no longer had to hold down the mouse button to keep firing.

Otherwise, a great start to something much bigger, and I'm glad you already have plans in the works! Great job!

Tiny Empires by Jack Maxwell 2017-12-06T02:08:33Z

Neat little game! It doesn't look like any tiles give bricks, so I ended up buying a lot of bricks trying to build things. I also spent a lot of turns just sacrificing villages to get enough resources to sell to buy a bank. It's got the great starting of a good civ game though!

Great job!

Don't get drunk by tulipekoni 2017-12-09T12:03:01Z

Solid use of the theme, and a refreshing take on an endless runner! I really like the distortion effect!

Great job!

The Lost City of Bhalrim by solluxx 2017-12-07T01:46:03Z

I love the treasure gathering mechanic in this, it's super innovative and fun to play.

Great job!

Open the Moon Gate by professor 2017-12-07T02:57:00Z

Awesome little game! I sort of wish the planet rotated with the mouse position though; I found myself missing moon pieces trying to use my mouse lol

Really well done otherwise!

Karma Run by THX1342 2017-12-06T22:27:16Z

This is super interesting and I love the concept. It plays really well, though I'm not sure why I kept insulting old people 0.0;; It fits the theme nicely and there's a lot of potential for a larger game from this.

All in all, great job!

Crystallone - False Stars by forrest 2017-12-06T01:49:42Z

Great atmosphere and music! The controls take a bit to get used to (I kept just spinning in place for a while, whoops) but they're really interesting once you do!

Great job!

Cyber Instinct by CyberPunks 2017-12-06T22:18:32Z

It's a neat little concept! Movement felt super floaty, even by floating robot standards, and the camera lagged behind the character a little too far. I could only spawn two turrets at any given time, but I had no indication that I only had two.

I echo a lot of what's been said above: there's a lack of feedback to the player, via the UI and the environment, and it makes it hard to see what's going on.

Also some feedback on the story screens that you have to click to progress, or that the game is loading, would have been nice. I sat waiting for the screen to change for a good few minutes before I thought to click to proceed.

Vermin by Hertz14 2017-12-08T22:40:20Z

Great entry! I played long enough that I think my followers stopped wanting to listen to what I was doing - or maybe they saw so much death that they rebelled - so feeding them became a problem. That aside, I really enjoyed this game. It's solid, with some great music, and the runaway sprites for the humans is hilarious. I like that the different food types give different types of power ups.

My only concern is that the tutorial text doesn't pause the movement so you can read it. Makes it hard to catch what's written there.

Other than that, great job!

LD41 — Combine 2 Incompatible Genres

Wreckless Rally by Flaterectomy 2018-04-25T22:22:19Z

Great melding of 2 genres! It's really polished and I like that you pick up cars and make combos with the colors. I did want to speed up the car using S though. Mostly my preference though!

Crazy Cube by YANIV 2018-04-25T07:10:08Z

Clever idea! I with there was some sound though (played on the WebGL version).

Unbelievabubble by maximebugman 2018-04-25T22:08:25Z

Great job on this! I did find the jump a little 'floaty' and the music seemed to keep repeating and getting louder...? That aside, this is super well put together and polished!

Vampire's Paper Route by SerpentWorks Games 2018-04-24T01:38:36Z

Oh dear! That is def a bug. Thanks for letting me know @Chris Hall!

Vampire's Paper Route by SerpentWorks Games 2018-04-24T01:50:14Z

@Chris Hall Easy enough fix! Had to fix some other UI bugs in the process. It should be all good to go now unless something else breaks terribly.

Vampire's Paper Route by SerpentWorks Games 2018-04-24T05:05:15Z

That is... So odd. Hmmm. Might be something on my end with how it's checking the level index to load. I will investigate this.

EDIT: there's a good chance the script didn't save before I built the exe when I went to fix it. Once I can start at code without my eyeballs aching I'll check on that.

Thank you so much for your patience

Vampire's Paper Route by SerpentWorks Games 2018-04-24T08:59:33Z

@Al3x3d thank you! I will!

@tokkiseul thank you!

@Sabeurre Yeah, that's a known issue. There's something up with the trigger colliders and for the life of me I can't figure out how to fix it. Thanks for playing!

@Corbak It's related to the above bug unfortunately! You're fine, you just gotta like charge the villager to bite them. Thanks for playing!

Vampire's Paper Route by SerpentWorks Games 2018-04-25T22:13:16Z

@roaderful Oh no! I'm sorry about that; player feedback and giving information to the player is on the list of things to work on.

Thanks for trying it out though!

Vampire's Paper Route by SerpentWorks Games 2018-04-27T23:51:51Z

@Ente Good to know about the stats. I'll look into it. :)

Vampire's Paper Route by SerpentWorks Games 2018-04-29T23:55:59Z

I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who's left feedback and commentary on the game here! You guys helped me find some bugs and solve some issues, and I'm proud to announce a post LD version of Vampire's Paper Route with your suggestions and notes taken into account!

If you're so inclined, feel free to give it another shot!

Super Slime Slasher Ultra by sebastianscaini 2018-04-25T01:15:38Z

I really enjoy the use the theme and the whole polished concept here! I couldn't get it to work with my Steelseries controller though, and had to use the keyboard :( The UI didn't seem to respond to my mouse, and I could never get... combos? It was very weird. Tutorial screen never popped up and while I'd kill slimes and they'd count themselves, that never added into my score.

It's super polished though and what I did play was enjoyable, even if the mouse controls are super clunky.

Well done!

EDIT: UPON FURTHER INVESTIGATION, I really gotta read itch.io pages more thoroughly and have come to know that you gotta cash in your combos. Or maybe actually read the tutorial itself fully.

Shuffle Climber by miroky 2018-04-25T01:29:50Z

It's a really neat little game that I am terrible at haha. Took a while to get used to the fact the action cards change as you use them, and only once the previous animation is finished. I did run into several instances where I just didn't have the card I needed, and didn't think about just spamming until I got the right one.

The ? cards are a little odd though and wasn't sure how to use them.

Otherwise, you have something I'd love to see expanded upon and released to the world at large Good job!

SSSS by PlusMinus 2018-04-25T22:28:49Z

Neat little game! I would have liked some sort of tooltip on the room icons to help understand what's happening. I never did get my little astronauts to mine successfully from the asteroids either.

Great concept though~

PROTECT by Maloy Quinn 2018-04-25T01:24:46Z

Nice use of the theme! I felt the jump was too floaty for the character just wiggling their legs, and I second that the Balrog has some funky collision. The player in your itch.io page feels like the camera is really zoomed in, but I'm not sure if that's my browser or how it embedded the player?

Otherwise you've got a solid concept and little game here! Good job!

Puzzle Invasion! by EstacaoMarte 2018-04-27T23:01:32Z

Neat little game! The WebGL had some control issues where I'd get stuck in one direction or the other until I pressed another button, but it wasn't too bad. The game does get repetitive after a while, but it's otherwise got a fun concept behind it.

Well done!
