LD35 — Shapeshift

Cyan by rxi 2016-05-19T20:22:00

Sound and graphics are amazing! Loved it! Great work!

The controls, on the other hand, are very frustrating. I don't know why but ZXC seemed more natural to me and I was constantly thinking about my next keystroke (something I prefer not to do on platformers). Also had trouble with the attack that rushes the enemy, I could never connect an attack without getting injured myself.

LD40 — The more you have, the worse it is

Save the Hats by Gruhh 2017-12-06T12:53:41Z

**Pros**: * Awesome graphics * Great music * Very fun gameplay * Very good link to the theme * Feito por BR :D

**Cons**: * Having to go thru the initial interaction with the boss everytime I restarted was a bit annoying * The balancing mechanic took a while to understand * I had a very strong urge to jump and go up, but couldn't! :D

Innocuous Match-3 Emoji Game by TowerHufham 2017-12-06T12:38:53Z

It takes some tries to get it, but when you do... :joy:

Not sure how it connects to the theme, but it's a cool short game! Well done

Warehouse Panic by benjamin 2017-12-07T13:50:28Z

I saw this game posted during the development and got super excited! The graphics look amazing and so does the sound.

I love the concept and micromanagement fits the bill theme-wise.

I did have a hard time with the controls, however. They were a bit unresponsive, at least for me. It seemed random when I could (or couldn't) pick up boxes. This did have a rage inducing effect on me. :(

Overall I think this is a game worth developing further!

**edit**: Ok, I tried the windows version now (previously I played the web version) and controls are much better! It's amazing how much content you managed to produced in so little time. Really enjoyed the game and believe, even more so now, that you should keep developing this idea! It's a fun minigame and I could see it working on mobile also (with some polish to the control scheme)

Cat-apults by Laylow 2017-12-06T11:58:43Z

unique fun game! the graphics are great and it sticks well to the theme. although... is it beatable? :D

A Platformer for Ants by Elendow 2017-12-07T17:37:13Z

Well done! Very nicely executed idea and a good interpretation of the theme.

Curse of Greed by Sophie Houlden 2017-12-05T15:30:12Z

Now I hate coins.... I hate them! And don't get me started on green lasers!

A very cool concept and spin on the theme! Such a simple yet effective idea.

The graphics and sounds are very pleasing and it feels like a very polished 8-bit game!

The only point I had a problem with were the controls. They felt a bit 'laggy' and I had a hard time timing them. Some sections seemed impossible to pass without damage or collecting coins (mainly places where you had to jump but the ceiling was too low. But maybe I just need to git gud ;)

Curse of Greed by Sophie Houlden 2017-12-05T15:31:51Z

sidenote: on itch.io your filename says it's for LD48 ;)

Snake+ by maskinmask 2017-12-05T13:19:30Z

**Visuals**: awesome! really well polished

**Sound**: music was ok (a bit too repetitive) but the rest felt a bit annoying tbh.. especially the sound of eating the energy balls (too high pitched imo)

**Controls**: I felt the snake was a bit laggy to control. In a game like this, having snappy controls is essential!

**Gameplay**: I love the idea of a remix of the snake game with powerups and small mini games intertwined! Congrats! After playing about 10 rounds I was still confused as to what each color meant, and if the snake's color had any impact in things or not. Also, I was unsure if I should be making same-color sequences or not.. it seemed like doing so hurt me more than just grabing random colors (especially making the 4-blue sequence... man those inverted controls are hard!)

Overall, congratulations on making a remix of such a famous game something challenging to play :)

The Prison Maze of Ozxu by MrPhil 2017-12-05T15:12:57Z

it's a challenging game! I like the balance between setting down totems and getting more enemies, it's a nice spin on the theme!

Shoot off their lumps by pixeye 2017-12-05T02:51:09Z

Super polished game with great visuals and atmosphere! I did have a bit of a hard time aiming and I felt it was a bit too short (I wanted to play more! Which is a great sign).

I did not, however, feel a great connection with the theme.

It's a great, great work anyhow. Amazing what was done in such a short timespan

Embol by azlen 2017-12-05T02:01:37Z

ahhaha love the idea! totally can relate to the 'issue' at hand :) love how you leveraged the topic

Coinminator 2000 by Victor Sette 2017-12-06T12:27:59Z

Very well done! Great graphics, excellent soundtrack (although, every time it restarted I thought I had done something bad!) and an amazing use of the theme! It is a very well rounded game and amazing to see what was done in a short time. The one quick fix I'd point out is the contrast between the numbers and the background (I could hardly see how many coins I had collected).

ps: Mandaram bem! Legal ver um jogo BR aqui :)

Happy Bot Mess by meursault 2017-12-05T12:48:56Z

I really liked this idea! Well done on the graphics and custom sound

The game, however didn't frame properly on my computer which made it a bit hard to play (image below).

This was a great application of the theme, and the game has a very high fun factor (maybe I'm biased because I like strategy/turn-based games). I'll be trying it out again if a patch fixes the framing issue

Indoor Haul by iseeicy 2017-12-05T12:29:42Z

Seems like an awesome idea! The soundtrack is solid and if the mall is randomly generated... wow! I'll look into your source code because this could be awesome for a roguelike :)

In terms of playability, I'm not sure if this is what was intended but the cart is absurdly painfull to turn, even when empty. Holding down S or A (or spamming each key individually) lets me turn something like 1-2 degrees per second. Is this the goal or is it a bug for me?? This made me not ennjoy the game as much

But congratulations on the idea!

Indoor Haul by iseeicy 2017-12-05T21:33:02Z

@iseeicy oh yeah, for me it's muuuuuuch slower! :O I ran it on Windows 10

Elf Fortress by jormybb 2017-12-05T02:37:47Z

well done! I love the look of the game. I did feel a it lost at the start and it took me way longer than it should have to figure out that I could click and drag instead of individually clicking tiles.

I got a bit lost, tho, as to what I could do to prevent those rioting ingrates from spreading their terrorist ideals to my other elfs :D

Dog-Off! by BrothersT 2017-12-06T22:08:52Z

Is the binary file for Linux correct?

Dog-Off! by BrothersT 2017-12-06T22:24:54Z

Played on Windows right now and I'm in awe! Absolutely fantastic! My favorite so far!

About Linux, it didn't seem line a linux binary file but a .exe which I couldn't execute. I'll try the new version as soon as I can. If there is still an issue I'll comment here

A Hero's Burden by muffty 2017-12-05T02:19:47Z

Oh wow... I'm in awe this was created for the jam! You guys did an amazing work. The game is extremely well polished. As mentioned before, the pacing is great and not to mention the visual and ambiance that was created.

Horny Bunny by Thomas FUentes 2017-12-05T19:07:58Z

By far the funniest game I've played this LD XD

Quantum's Rick by cortexdeveloper 2017-12-06T22:57:13Z

It's a fun spin on the R&M episode and a good application of the theme, with super simple mechanic! :) Super hard, especially because it didn't run very fast on my notebook (about 5 fps), but I managed (somehow) to win it

Points to improve IMO: * Slow down the speed a bit of the changes of characters * Music is a bit repetitive * Rick would NEVER have different poses because Rick is never uncertain :D

Lights Out! by rubr 2017-12-06T11:49:36Z

The graphics are very clean and the movement is solid with a great animation! Although very simple, the main character is very like-able :) The link with the theme is the weakest point, imo. Sound effects would be a great addition to the game.

Stand your ground by GistNoesis 2017-12-06T11:53:01Z

This is an interesting one :D Aiming is difficult because of the perspective, but you get the hang of it after a while. The most fun I had, tho, was in the sandbox mode, trying to break the game with hundreds of spheres! :D

Waiter, Please! by Chin Jieh 2017-12-05T15:59:33Z

Very nice! Nice use of the theme and a complex game in a seemingly simple package. There's a lot to handle (many plates, customers, cleaning tables, getting here and there fast and not to mention the motor coordination needed in both hands to control the sway of the plates!). Very well done

The only thing I missed was the possibility of restarting the round when I saw, mid-way, that I had already failed! :)

Fourteen by JoaoP 2017-12-06T11:45:36Z

It's a fun platformer with good music and a very nice sprites and movement animation! Nice job! I did not understand, however, the mechanics of the difficulty increase and how it was related to the theme.

Greedy Dungeons by Nils -Gecko- Munch 2017-12-07T19:18:24Z

It's a fun game with a smart mechanic! Music is well done and graphics, although simple, are pleasant. The controls could need a bit of work since sometimes your collision box gets stuck on walls and your character sometimes freezes after being hit. Regarding the theme it was a nice use of it, with a touch of humor which is highly appreciated. You also managed to put in a decent amount of content which is commendable given the low amount of time we have to develop! I also appreciate very much the fact that you don't underestimate the intelligence of the game's players, not giving away all the solutions (like how you deal with the gargoyles). This is something we are dearly missing in games these days.

Ninjewels! by FinalForeach 2017-12-05T12:55:45Z

Nice work on the grapics and the controls feel smooth. Gameplay wise, however, I found the game a bit too easy. I could just hold one direction and keep jumping to avoid the mines completely (they seem to be always in the lower part and there's no reason for me to go there). Also, not sure if a bug or a feature but the more you hold one of the directions the faster you go, which meant that really quickcly I was super fast and nothing could catch me :D

Friends and Monsters by Killnaprimer 2017-12-05T12:40:20Z

I really enjoyed this game and I think it is a good platform to work on further!

It is fun how things get exponentially harder. I liked how monsters switch between wanting to get to the player and (smartly) going for lone 'friends' to increase their monster numbers.

A great use of the theme

Even though the theme is a bit saturated, I can easily see this re-skinned as a zombie survival where you go around trying to save people. And sometimes part of your party 'turns'. :D

Things I would work on to further improve: - Sound! - Player movement feels a bit too 'floatty'. I'm curious how more snappy/responsive controls would feel - Friend movement is also a bit too floatty, but if they were super precise behind you that would ruin the fun... but I would test some different options (I imagine you might have during development)

Epitaph by velvetlobster 2017-12-06T12:47:54Z

Amazing art. It does feel like you are immersed in a watercolor painting. But I had a bit of difficulty linking the gameplay to the theme while in game. I'm sure if more time was given you could have fleshed out the game a bit more and expanded on it :)

bom trabalho!

To The Depths by Pedro Medeiros 2017-12-05T15:45:10Z

A great use of the theme, with a great aesthetic! I did get a bit lost but it was a nice challenge to figure out what was happening while playing. Overall a very well polished game!

Necrothrone by CiaranW 2017-12-07T13:32:40Z

This is a unique tower-defense like game. I enjoyed the mechanics and the flavour text was very entertaining :) Games like this must be difficult to balance so it's very understandable that it started very slow and picks up really fast after a while. It is fun, however, to have a central point of defense which for me was unique in a TD game. The game would benefit from a clearer explanation of how things work in-game. Simple text over each kind of building would help immensely but even better would be to replicate the instructions here, in-game.

My Nuts Weigh Me Down by Slyddar 2017-12-05T13:09:02Z

Well done! It is a fun game and the difficulty is well balanced enough to make it a fun challenge :) There are some bugs here and there but that's normal. I really liked the art, especially the trees and Chuck. Chuck looks like he's up to no good, tbh :D Suggestions: - Let the player eat the nuts to regain a bit of health - Let the foxes move up and down sometimes. I manage to get a few stuck in a path that had the rock in front of them, which made me a nice corridor to go thru :D (maybe that was intended!0

Weeb Runner by Natsu 2017-12-05T13:29:45Z

Loved the idea and the use of the theme! Super funny concept! :D Well done!

The game was challenging and kept me entertained. The fact that the game is 'persistent' between deaths gives a nice strategic element to it (maybe running into items early is a good move, to clear up the path for later).

Thank you for making R a quick restart option even during current runs!

Suggestions:

**Controls**: I did feel the controls were a bit 'laggy' tho, it could use some work there.

**Interface**: mention that Z jumps in the starting window! :D I had to come here to read the instructions

Crowd Control by PolyHatSteve 2017-12-06T11:47:44Z

A very nice concept and a game that can get very hectic very fast (which is always appreciated! ;))

Karma Run by THX1342 2017-12-05T01:55:43Z

Ouch... I have no way of testing and debugging that right now :( The menu screen was done in a hurry so it might be totally broken. If I can't find the bug I'll try publishing a version without it.

Karma Run by THX1342 2017-12-05T02:38:19Z

I'll incorporate that in the source code! thanks!

@towerhufham thank you for the compliment! :)

yes... the last 3h of the jam I messed around with both pyinstaller and py2exe with no success... it's a dissapointment because coding in Python is very fun :) I'll keep trying to find the least painful solution. If not, I will consider other languages/frameworks. Thank's for pointing out rot.js

Karma Run by THX1342 2017-12-05T06:46:26Z

@exploding-bits I've tried cx_freeze also :( but I didn't really dive deep into any of them because of the time restraint. Thanks for the feedback!

@ryuzaki-mrl I'm glad you enjoyed it! How far did you go? LVL 9 was my record :) lvl9.PNG

@draysound I really like the idea, but not sure if I can change the game now (for LD). But I will do some more work on it and I'll included the extended track! :) Also, I might try to use some game elements to mix and match the mood of the tracks

@azlen I've played a bit with Godot a few years back and enjoyed it. Not quite python but seemed familiar anyhow. In any case, I'm playing with making games more as a programming learning exercise, but if I continue enjoying sharing games as much as I am now, maybe I'll need to broaden my toolset :) thanks for the feedback and tips

Karma Run by THX1342 2017-12-05T06:51:53Z

@mrphil thanks for the feedback! sorry you had a hard time using Python :( I was just thinking about giving a better description of whats inside the game (without spoiling the surprises)

@victor-sette yes, only 64bit :( Not sure how I can export 32bit without access to a 32bit Windows machine (which I don't have).

You could try running from the source code. You need:

1. Python 3 on your machine 2. Clone my repo `git clone http://github.com/gcmartinelli/karma` 3. Go into the game's main directory (`/karma`) 4. Install the necessary dependencies with `pip install -r requirements.txt` 5. Play! Type `python karma.py`

@dudum-lare thanks for following the development and playing the game! I'm glad you enjoyed it, even in this raw form :) The audio is indeed amazing! @draysound did an awesome job and even more amazing is that he volunteered to do it when he saw my posts here on ldjam during development :)

Karma Run by THX1342 2017-12-06T20:39:25Z

@laylow well, being inspired by roguelikes you are expected to die a lot :D

but indeed the game is not as fleshed out as I hoped it would have been. Unfortunately I ended up having bigger issues than expected during development and content ended up suffering because of it. I hope I can have better time management next time :)

@willoxs sorry to hear that :( what device are you running?

@togimaro hey! glad you enjoyed it and glad the linux build worked fine! my first time exporting an executable so I'm having some issues on that front

@yancouto glad to head you liked it! yes, I totally agree that its confusing right now.. I set myself a very harsh constraint by the screen size and didn't manage to fit all the necessary information I needed in the time I had. Maybe in a newer version I'll increase the text box size or something. Thanks for the feedback! :)

REIN by LyvaGames 2017-12-06T12:10:03Z

*Pros*: * Very nice graphics * The detail of the vegetation moving when you pass by was great! * Fun keyboard+mouse controls * Great music

*Cons*: * Dash control is a bit weird (if you are moving diagonally it behaves erratically) * When you are out of arrows there's no visual cue * Lacks feedback when boss is hit and his HP * Didn't see much of a connection with the theme

OVerall it was an excellent job, albeit not related to the theme :)
