LD40 — The more you have, the worse it is

Lovely Kana by FireSlash 2017-12-05T23:15:41Z

Very nice. Very nice graphics, audio and overall production! The game is fun but two feedback I would give is: more options might be nice, and more feedback about how much work you've done might be also nice. Really relaxing and interesting overall, would love to see it fleshed out into a bigger game.

A Walk To The Finish Line by jk5000 2017-12-09T02:33:53Z

Honestly really amazing that this was produced during the compo. Very clever, polished and well balanced. I especially liked the slow introduction of new mechanics.

Majestyland by IgorsGames 2017-12-09T02:27:35Z

Very interesting game, with a lot of personality! The dwarves getting stuck on things is very frustrating however, amplified by the lighting not making it clear where the cliffs are. The core game idea is very cool though, and could be a lot of fun if polished up nicely.

SiniS is not in Space by BoltKey 2017-12-05T14:15:36Z

Excellent game once I got used to the controls. I love the self-regulation of the difficulty in combination with the instant online leaderboard. Very satisfying cracking the board on some of the harder maps! Nice enemy differentiation enables you to really tailor your ship for each level once you get to know their patterns really well. I think I spent a good hour playing this. :)

Drgn by UnlikelyNomad 2017-12-05T05:37:28Z

Very impressive production value, and a fun game in general. It is actually quite hard because the villagers are really quite threatening. I thought I found a cheese strat of leaning against a building and shooting it, but thankfully those damn villagers kept me in check.

The limitations of the aiming and chomping mechanics add to the fun because you really have to plan your moves. The arcing of the arrows is also great because it adds to the challenge of fighting villagers head on.

The graphics and music are really perfect for a game of this scope. In combination they really give it a lot of charm. I especially liked the UI and HUD elements. Great game overall.

Indoor Haul by iseeicy 2017-12-05T06:16:58Z

This is really an excellent game. The seemingly randomly generated malls are very fun to explore, and the control scheme for the core mechanic is really great once you get used to it. I got a little greedy in the 5 minute mode, stuffing probably 15 pc towers into my cart, only to find that rapidly pushing forward only inched me along. The graphics, sound, and music also have a lot of character. I especially love the goofy store signs.

One thing I would love to see would be one or two really pricey stores in every mall. That could definitely up the challenge and reward the player for exploring every area. Anyways, had a lot of fun with this one.

Sea Wars: Piratefront by Ogniok 2017-12-09T02:14:16Z

Really impressive for 48 hours. I kind of wish the turning radius was a little tighter, but I suppose that's part of the challenge. Difficult and fun overall!

Catastrophic Cities by Drauthius 2017-12-09T02:04:09Z

Very nice game, although very difficult. The RNG can be a little rough at times, but I'd imagine that could be ironed out easily with a bit more time. As an example of that, it's possible to you fire station to light on fire the instant it is built. That's game breaking if it happens on the first turn.

Graphics are great, and the icons are clear. It's easy to gauge your progress at a glance, and is rewarding to see your city grow. I like the UX for the most part, although the text % could be nicely augmented with bars, etc. Anyways, a fantastic game to have been made in a jam!

Mini Mod by Riker Greenslade 2017-12-09T02:40:45Z

Very impressive showing for a game jam. The instrumental sound in particular is amazing and very clever. Love the self-regulated difficulty as well, reminds me of Bastion's system in a really good way.

The Provocateur by Team Catwheel 2017-12-05T20:29:08Z

Really a lot of fun, and the mood is fantastic. My AI got stuck on buildings once in a while but the reinforcements were usually enough. To some degree it almost seems to counteract the theme though - a bigger army was better not worse. Had a lot of fun though! Love the ending. :D

Hotel Nero by Nightfall 2017-12-05T05:12:47Z

Very nice overall! The level design is really well done - you definitely have to put some thought into how many trips to take, and who to leave behind. The aesthetic is solid and pleasing and the fire is suitably terrifying.

Just Another Day by DraperDanMan 2017-12-05T05:22:22Z

Very interesting experience overall. The aesthetic really makes you feel like a call worker, and the silly people voices make it feel a bit surreal and are a nice touch. A lot of the conversations are genuinely interesting, with some really throwing me off guard. I think I got caught in a similar loop to dcolgan though, receiving infinite calls about playing the game. Was starting to get creepy until I realized it was probably a bug. Glad to have played it though.

Manage Your Stuff by Wobling 2017-12-07T01:06:45Z

Definitely one of the best games I've played this jam! The minor inventory bug can be annoying but it's easy to fix(move a weapon to a different spot.)

Graphics and sound are fantastic, love the weapon FX especially. The game design itself is brilliant though, takes the annoying loot shifting around in ARPGs into a challenging and interesting game. I love the different weapon ranges and enemy types in particular. You really have to save the big guns for the tanks if you want to last for awhile.

P.S. Make sure to rate games to improve your smart rating, this really deserves to be on the leaderboards!

MAMMONITE LD40 by bigmetre 2017-12-05T23:29:34Z

Solid game, amazing production value for 48 hours! Camera is a little tricky, but the biggest challenge is that it seems very rare that your attack interrupts the enemy's attack. One bug I noticed is that the score always shows 93 even when I get higher. One thing I really like is the avatar's attack animation - feels weighty and powerful.

Crowd Control by PolyHatSteve 2017-12-06T01:21:41Z

Thanks for the kind comments, guys. I'm glad you enjoyed the game!

@subwooferx3 Thanks for the heads up, that never crossed my mind. It seems like the resolutions which aren't 16:9 are the problem. :O

@kromeboy I have gotten that feedback a couple of times, definitely going to experiment with an easier difficulty! It can be tough to judge how hard one's own game is. ^^

Keyboard Cats by sungk 2017-12-09T02:21:14Z

Fun and cute game, but I must agree with some of the other commenters that it did start to drag on after awhile. I think part of that is that the typing isn't very engaging, even though petting the cats is satisfying. Very interesting idea though, so I'm happy to have experienced it!

LD44 — Your life is currency

Life's a Dish by dxk2294 2019-05-03T02:37:59Z

A really unique idea, I would love to see it in a more polished form! Not a huge fan of the controls, it might be better if right click or something else was used to move the camera. It's a bit frustrating when the camera zooms out just because you misclicked a button. Also (at least in the web version) the coins falling caused HUGE lag, like pausing for over 30 seconds. It might be a good idea to just lerp the coin transforms instead of using physics, because lots of small objects can be a problem. It's a great concept though, and it's nicely challenging. Well done!

Regal Pain by PolyHatSteve 2019-05-02T21:24:15Z

Thanks for the kind comments all, glad you got something out of it :P

@firellon That's something I noticed as well, I'm planning on experimenting with some tougher choices and maybe even some random ones. Thanks for the feedback!

@kharibidus 760 is good! I think the highest I've gotten was around 800-900. I made ranks up to 1500, but I think you'd have to be extremely lucky to hit that. More feedback in game is a great idea, perhaps I could show a list of all the ranks like in civilization.

@pawciu 540 is quite good! I've had quite a few runs land in the 500-600 range, it's quite luck-dependent to get higher than that.

@mrbrooms Thanks, I'm thinking of making a post-jam version with more and better events! I added the -1 every month to add a bit of challenge, and to keep the player from getting an endless run. In theory, the player could continuously get events with safe choices like "stay home", and never get damaged for several years. That wouldn't be very fun, so the -1 is to encourage the player to take risks to increase their score before they die. It is worth considering though, so I'll definitely brainstorm some alternative mechanics I could use.

Paid in Blood by Scott Steffes 2019-04-30T20:57:24Z

Really well done, love the worldbuilding and graphics. Sound is suitably creepy as well. I like the focus on risk management and investing in your deck for future turns. I agree with the comments that it does get too easy if you have a good start, but balance is tricky in 3 days, so no big deal. Great work overall!

TRIWAR by Donitz 2019-04-30T21:23:23Z

Really great aesthetic, fun gameplay, and even a compelling introduction. Spawning pool is tricky, but the one I couldn't beat was the second last level - super difficult. Not that that's a bad thing, I'm sure it's beatable with enough practice. Regardless, really impressive to build a compelling RTS in a 3 days, so great work!

Give and Take by purnatus 2019-05-04T06:54:18Z

This was excellent, one of my favourite games of this jam. Great atmosphere, writing, and nice simple mechanics. I like the feeling of moral weight. I think the death counter might be bugged? I think I killed many patients, but it only seemed to increase occasionally. Also, there were too many patients with single digit rewards - they are basically not worth any risk at all, so maybe a lower bound to rewards might be nice. Also, the dog level was a nice surprise. Anyways, great game, it would be cool to see it expanded upon with more consequences and mechanics!

Gaia Hero by DigitalWizard 2019-05-02T04:25:40Z

Very interesting and unique. Didn't expect to play a rhythm simulation game with this theme! The dragging and dropping isn't super intuitive, the buyable items look like buttons - I died trying to press them the first time haha. Other than that, very clever and well done.

LD41 — Combine 2 Incompatible Genres

MechaSnek by bluescrn 2018-04-25T07:32:39Z

Fun and nice production value for a jam game! I agree with the camera being tricky, it makes the game harder than it would be with an overhead or other view. The environment is a little hard to read due to how dark it is, but not a big deal. Definitely a nice entry!

OUTLAW 🚗 MAYOR 🚓🚓 PANIC! by 01010111 2018-04-25T07:00:16Z

Really impressive that you made such a pretty game as a compo entry! The camera is a bit dizzying and the game is super hard, but fun and really quite polished.

Last Man Green by ded 2018-04-24T07:12:35Z

Didn't expect that ending, hahaha. Loved the sound design and the kinda creepy atmosphere!

Unbelievabubble by maximebugman 2018-04-25T07:23:37Z

This is amazing, love the humour, artstyle, and I think the combination of mechanics makes for an interesting experience. I did get stuck once in a corner but that was my own fault :P

golf hell by undefinist 2018-04-26T07:03:18Z

A really interesting combination of genres, and fun to play. It's very difficult! :P

Eggstinction by kukiri 2018-04-25T07:46:35Z

A very nice game, I feel like this is basically a complete game. Amazing to have been made in a jam! Definitely a good challenge as well, I couldn't get past the level where the hole is surrounded by huge ramps!

SkyRunner by JoiSigurdss 2018-04-27T19:30:45Z

I love the visuals of this game, so mesmerizing and straight-up pretty. The game loop is nicely addictive as well, almost dream-like with the environment. Some chilled out space or ambient music could help push it that direction if you wanted to. Overall a very cool experience.

NEED FOR DEFENSE by trulyspinach 2018-04-24T07:43:29Z

Really nice! I was a little confused what the towers did exactly, but a nice and interesting combination overall!

CCC: Cyber City CAB by Yetman 2018-04-27T20:31:02Z

This is really, really good. Nice graphics, sound, atmosphere, gameplay. Looking forward to playing the post jam version later. Overall really enjoyed it.

The not-so Correct Platformer by notpresident35 2018-04-27T19:38:32Z

This is very clever and interesting. I definitely think the explanatory graphic at the beginning is super well-done, it easily communicates something very abstract about the game. Music is great as well.

Simple Galactic by Arqcenick 2018-04-24T07:35:41Z

Really enjoyed this! Got to Galactic Emperor, with like 8 planets. Really rewarding when you discover a new one! A couple technical issues though: music was a bit loud, and when I went full-screen it cut off the top hud elements (on a macbook pro.) One other thing: I couldn't figure out how to redraw. Pressing the Simple Galactic card didn't seem to work. Anyways, I'm really impressed that you managed to make a strategy game with interesting choices in such a short time-frame!

CWF: Card Wrestling Federation by sprngr 2018-04-26T06:20:30Z

This is excellent, and I love the humour and flavour text! Great job overall

Fightin' Words - Real Typing Strategy by Eitrius 2018-04-27T20:13:50Z

This is brilliant and seems to have a lot of depth. I kept getting killed on the level where they start on either side of you. I agree with the sentiment that having the ability to turn at something other than 90 degrees would be nice. Overall I'm amazed you made something of this quality for the jam.

Point-defense Hell by PolyHatSteve 2018-04-24T08:15:28Z

@Nico H. Thank you! The most useful thing is to place upgraded slow towers near the bottom to help dodge, and then tons of defense towers. After level 5 you need tons of anti-enemy towers though because you just can't block all the bullets. :P

@tthe Thanks for the thoughtful response! Yeah the game does perform poorly, but that is mostly not the engine's fault haha. I'm doing some pretty expensive things for the point-defense towers, and the game is actually 3d rendered using an orthographic camera...! I was going to go with a 2.5D style but didn't have time, so I ended up with a poorly-performing 2D game, haha. The collision problems partly stem from that as well.

I had a restart button rigged up as well, but it was super buggy so I just left it out for the release. Sacrifices had to be made to meet the compo deadline, heh. I mentioned it on the itch page further down, but I've moved it up to the top now. Anyways, cheers!

Point-defense Hell by PolyHatSteve 2018-04-26T19:22:01Z

@Evan Minto Thank you! Also yeah, the slow turrets can actually make it harder if you build them too high up, haha. The best place seems to be to put them near the bottom just to give you more time to dodge without disrupting the patterns too much.

@Zinkler Yeah it did strike me that something was a bit off with the controls as I was testing the game. I've been playing some touhou lately and it definitely does feel more floaty than it should. I think the problem comes down with using the Unity "axes" system, so I'm going to have to experiment with just basic button inputs later on. Anyways, thanks for the input!

Ludum Dare 41 - Prime Serenity by pRoFiT 2018-04-24T07:19:17Z

Clever little idea! I liked the sound and atmosphere a lot. Some of those doors are tricky!

Shattered Melodies by yancharkin 2018-04-27T20:02:02Z

This is amazing, I would say my favourite entry of the jam I've played so far. Really a fresh idea for a game! I think a cool idea might be a hard mode where you could only hear the song once. I managed to beat all the guitar dudes but I had to play the song a couple times most of the time. :P

Card Walk by Dovena 2018-04-24T07:46:50Z

Nice work, I really enjoyed the art! Level three is super hard haha.

Card Walk by Dovena 2018-04-25T07:34:00Z

@Dovena No worries, and no I couldn't beat it haha. I'm not great at platforming games though :P

Baseball Nightmare by Amazura 2018-05-08T03:18:05Z

Very impressive for a jam game, but I can't help but feel like the baseball theme could be expanded upon. For example, if the zombies came from only one direction and you had to successfully hit a pitched ball to attack them or something? Just a thought for how it might be made more unique, (as it is he might as well have a gun, if you get where I'm coming from.) Love the graphics and mood though, and overall quite fun!

Tetris shooter by RaccoonLudos 2018-04-24T08:02:57Z

Very nice concept, and a fun game! Quite difficult though, haha. I did experience a bug where some blocks got stuck a few times, but thankfully you can shoot them out of the way. :P
