LD38 — A Small World

Tiny Earth vs The Universe by cameron2134 2017-05-12T04:18:59Z

Not bad. The idea and basic execution were solid, and the music selected fit nicely.

Acceleration on the player seemed a little low for an arena shooter like this - it makes it hard to intentionally avoid things, so I kept to circling and hoping I didn't run into anything. Because pinpoint maneuvering was too difficult, I ended up not really using the asteroids at all, which is too bad as I think they would otherwise add a neat tactical component.

I also encountered a bug where an enemy spawned outside the map. I happened to die on that wave, but I believe I would have been stuck had I killed the others.

Congratulations on finishing your first Ludum Dare!

The core mechanic has potential, and with higher movement speed I could see a frantic defense game coming out of this. Best of luck on your next jam!

Pretty nifty! I haven't played anything with a movement system like this, and it seemed to work well. I seem to have a decent VR nausea tolerance, and this was fine.

It was kind of nice that you could fly indefinitely by alternating jets - felt very "Iron Man". However, it does take a lot of the challenge out of the platforming. If the flight and platforming is the core of your future version, you may want to balance the thrust and fuel cost to prevent that.

I noticed that the jet size was based on how far you held the trigger, but fuel consumption and thrust seemed to be unchanged. I assume you ran out of time to finish that - it's a useful feature if implemented.

A fun experience with a well-implemented movement system. Well done!

Nice puzzle platformer. Simple mechanics, but they have the possibility of good depth. Nice job on your first jam game.

UFO GO HOME (VR) by Clavus 2017-05-19T01:26:45Z

Very impressive!

Graphics are very nice, and I'm impressed at the polish. Watching the missile trails as a UFO gets shot down is very satisfying.

One minor bug: the missiles in the launchers seem to get rotated to funny angles. I'm uncertain of the cause.

The main issue is that there is not enough to do. Once your guys are set up on the missiles, you can pretty much just watch. The accuracy of the gas shots is very poor, and the lasers don't damage your people. Giving the player more things to do would be nice.

Also, making some of the clutter objects grabbable is always a nice touch in VR games. I found myself reaching for the crates and such, trying to fill my downtime. More physics interactions is always nice, and a major benefit of the Oculus hands is that it feels more like you are there. Not being able to do anything but grab the men feels like a missed opportunity.

Finally, I'd recommend using grips instead of triggers for picking things up - it seems to be the standard with Oculus Touch, while triggers are more of a Vive thing.

Make Alien Planet Great Again by Enumox 2017-05-19T03:34:52Z

A fun little game. Impressive work for a single day. It's a bit of a pain when enemies spawn close to you and shoot you right away, but otherwise the gameplay feels good. There's a bit of sliding while abducting that behaves a little strangely, but that's the only real bug I noticed.

Pretty nifty! AI seemed pretty good for a jam, particularly for a single programmer. It would be nice to see the stats of the units (hp, damage, attack speed).

Looks like you played to your strengths. While light on mechanics, the animation and graphics were top notch. Well done.

Heart Work by nettleflap 2017-12-07T05:24:15Z

Hey, this is braingamer (from the stream). I played your game with my sister, and here are my thoughts:

This was a fun game. I like the teamwork aspect, where both players are critical to success. As more players are added they seem less relevant, as the inner two players really control the heart's movements. The outer ones only really protect from piranhas. If the pull strength of the cable was a little stronger in moving other players, I could see this being a great party game where everybody feels important.

The idea was really clever. Many team games are easier with more people, so the challenges are scaled up to match. In this one, more people bogs you down and makes it harder to coordinate - a neat application of the theme. As I mentioned earlier, I don't know that this really was borne out in the current version of the game. We tried a 6-player round (with each controlling 3) and it seemed considerably easier with more bodies to eat piranha hits. I concede that if those other characters were controlled by players with their own ideas then the game would be a little more challenging, but because the outer characters don't greatly affect the heart movement I doubt it would be significant.

The ravens are an interesting mechanic that I only really appreciated after trying with more characters. Good job keeping up the difficulty with more players that way.

Graphics look good. I like the shadow from the ravens passing overhead before they appear, and the splash effects from movement. Your gifs don't show the heart damage effects, so I was pleasantly surprised by that.

Music was fine, matched the feel of the game. A little short on the loop, but it's a game jam. Sound effects were generally good, though the cheer when you get a pearl was a little loud and started to grate after a while.

Overall, this game was a solid production. Neat mechanics and pretty fun to play. Looks like one I'll have to try with a group of friends.

Student Loan Simulator 2017 Ramen Edition by smbe19 2017-12-05T18:57:54Z

Nice game! It really clicked for me the first time I got a massive amount of payment notices for the loans I took out - that huge flood of invoices really brings on the panic.

Nice game. I like the sword dash attack - very satisfying. I found myself just using the ranged attack however, since it made sure I didn't accidentally pick up gems. Requiring you to pick up gems for points is interesting, but the "nothing" gems were entirely my focus. I'm not sure how much they added to the game, as they leave the game fairly static (no curses means no difficulty curve). Music and graphics were solid for a jam. My biggest complaint about visuals is that the pick up range for gems felt a little small - I kept feeling that my character's size included the orbiting crystals.

Hope to see another game from you next time!

Nice little puzzle game. Very reminiscent of Legend of Zelda's push puzzles - my experience served me well :) The controls felt finicky, and the large model combined with the high movement speed made it tricky to move precisely. It would have been nice to have a timer to know how long you have left, but I like the concept.
