Fun game, bad puns, the words "bear-blasting"; probably plays smoother with a controller but fun nonetheless!

adroitconceptions 2017-12-04 03:44

Very well done twin-stick shooter.

I loved the roar dance (roar while moving). Did find 1 bug - reloading left you with 2 weapons Did find 1 maybe bug - some of the creatures seemed to get stuck *ON* some of the wall tiles.

Once again very well done.

mrleeperry 2017-12-05 04:00

Hahaha, too cool. Although I never quite figured out the effective use of the bear "ROAR!", the animation for that alone busted me up. I had a legit good time playing this! On my Xbox style controller the fire button wasn't the trigger, but X button, so using both sticks and that random input for firing was rough... but I got used to it quickly!

ponker 2017-12-05 07:43

Amazingly fun and amazingly well made!! Blasting those bees and firing the weapons feels good!

madjackmcmad 2017-12-05 17:59

@MrLeePerry Neither trigger worked? Good to know, I'll have to fix that up.

paulhocker 2017-12-06 05:37

had to play in a window as @ponker said - the weapon types were awesome - well polished game - great stuff

Sorry, I ran into some technical issues with this and couldn't really dig in so I haven't rated.

As I moved away from the center, map tiles popped in and out of existence visually, and the graphics didn't seem to line up with the colliders so I was unable to tell where I could move. In case it's helpful, I used FRAPS to record a quick demonstration of what occurred, and I've uploaded it to youtube as an unlisted video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KM8OPcHTDIc

My system is Windows 7 and I played the rc1 build trying both fullscreen and windowed. That video is from the fullscreen play.

Looked like an interesting combat multi-tasker with nice art/sound and a few systems to explore!

madjackmcmad 2017-12-08 17:04

@pkenny v1.01 is live! Two big fixes, one the crazy rendering bug is fixed (probably :D ) and it should run at any resolution. Second is the dummy weapon getting stuck to your body on restart.

pebkac 2017-12-08 18:34

Nice one! Overall pretty polished. I like how many different guns are available. One thing though, on WSAD/Arrows: when you press an arrow key it shoots first, and then aims the gun. This can be a problem when you're in a tight corner wielding the rocket launcher...

madjackmcmad 2017-12-08 18:46

@pebkac Thank you! I'm not pleased with how keyboard firing turned out, I admit that it slipped through the cracks a bit. I don't think patching a control change really is in the spirit of "small bug fixes only", but I'd sure like for it to feel better and I wish I'd caught it sooner.

arputikos 2017-12-08 19:04

Very cool game! I love variety of powerups and number of weapons! Idea is also interesting. Graphics and animations are awesome! Keep up!

sir-magic 2017-12-08 19:09

What you did well:

This was a really nice entry with smooth animations, nice sprites and a good use of "game feel". I loved that you had controller support (which I used). The gameplay was unique and great and I really liked the dual analogue idea.

What you could improve on:

The sound effects were definitely not the greatest and I felt that this game would be better with shadows and a bit of differentiation in lighting, with darker lighting in the harder parts of the map.

But overall, an enjoyable game!

madjackmcmad 2017-12-08 19:24

@sir-magic hahah holy crap, shadows and lighting? Do I look like a wizard from the moon? :D That's excellent feedback though, and thank you. My goal is to create content rich short-play arcadey stuff, but I keep trying to lift up the polish everywhere else. One day, when I'm less of a chicken, I'll try squeezing sprite lighting into the compo.

cubeeo 2017-12-08 20:21

I played on a keyboard. It wasn't the best functionality, but it was fully playable. (I've encountered some games here that were downright unplayable on a keyboard.) I agree with your comment:

"I don’t think patching a control change really is in the spirit of “small bug fixes only”" and I respect that.

While I was playing, where the score is, at fairly frequent intervals it said "Scoreboard blocked." At first, I thought it was just waiting to update scores until the next time it did that function, but after a bit I realized, it definitely wasn't adding to my score nearly enough. I know this because by the time I realized this, I'd played the game a few times, and my final attempt was by far my best attempt - I was fighting snakes and stuff - but my score was very low, compared to prior plays. So, don't know if that's some kind of bug.

But, this is a unique and different and fun game, and I highly appreciate that. The shadows and lighting comment and your response made me laugh. You are, in fact, not a wizard. In fact, I don't think shadows and lighting would be a good use of your limited time and resources. I'd rather you focus on fun, like you did. Great job! Nice innovation and allocation of resources to the proper aspects of the gameplay.

Okay, this was a ton of fun. The badger tornado was a pain in the neck and awesome. I especially loved the destructible walls. I have only two nitpicks, 1) I would have liked the bear to move faster, and 2) the difficulty ramped up a little quickly.

Overall this was awesome and you did a great job!

jasperarmstrong 2017-12-09 02:53

Solid twin-stick shooter. I had a lot of fun playing it. I loved the art. You managed to get a lot of content in there given the amount of time. You also got an online leaderboard in there, which is very cool. The sounds could've been better, but other than that, there's not much I can say as far as what to improve. Good job!

mewsoul 2017-12-09 18:56

Fun entry, I liked it! I went for a full run and ended with 50k+ points :D All the different bonus were nice, the way you handle how the player takes damage is good. In my opinion, it felt some screenshake was missing when firing for example, and a bit of vibrations for controllers would have make it feel even better :) By the way, I think you should put a link to this page on your itch.io page, I found you there and it was a bit difficult to find you ;)

madjackmcmad 2017-12-09 19:37

@mewsoul Thank you! I probably went too easy on the shake -- there's shake on the chaingun, and shake on rocket hits. I probably should have added shake to the dualies and trigun but I thought I was overdoing it.

I don't know why I didn't think about vibration, Rewired would handle that easily. Damn, I missed that one.

There should be a big "LUDUM DARE" banner at the top of the page next to a button that takes you here :-/ crap. I will add a link, thank you.

mewsoul 2017-12-09 20:00

@madjackmcmad Oh you're right about the button, my bad, actually I didn't notice it because the banner is the same color as the main one :x

logan 2017-12-10 01:08

Dang, this didn't seem to recognize my PS2 controller as a dual-stick thing, and I couldn't wrap my head around the keyboard controls. I think when I selected a direction to shoot, I think it'd shoot a bullet first, then adjust to the new angle? This ended up killing me several times when I got the rockets powerup.

I don't think it'd be fair of me to rate this. It's a shame I couldn't play it properly, 'cause it looks fun.

madjackmcmad 2017-12-10 05:17

@logan lemme see what I can do -- not accepting a controller is an input bug and those I'm allowed to fix. I'll post again here if I can manage to fix it.

saintheiser 2017-12-10 10:47

Woah! 8-th place =) Interesting game! One thing I dislike is stuck on damage. Wrong place and bear dies =(

xacur 2017-12-11 02:26

This is crazy, this game is amazingly well made, it one of the most fun I've played so far, and I've played a lot. Many weapons, different enemies, strategy, nice graphics. Great work.

madjackmcmad 2017-12-11 15:29

@saintheiser There's a bug in the way impulses are gathered that can kind of stick you in place if you bear-blast and then try to push against it. Blowing up a rocket in your own face will push you away pretty far, and if you try to run against that impulse you really get held up. It's bad physics, I apologize.

pixeltrik 2017-12-12 13:09

Damn, the game gives me an arcady feeling, by that I didn't mean "INSERT COIN" but the progression in the game. The sprites look nice and it's strangely engaging in shooting bees with a gun mounted on a bear. Overall, it's a great experience.

blubberquark 2017-12-19 09:43

There's a lot going on, but this game didn't click for me. Also I got stuck in a beehive. The art style is very readable.
