It was a lot of fun; I especially like the characters. The sound effects were spot on! Thanks for making it!

bryceltaylor 2017-12-06 00:57

Memory games are hard. I felt like I was fighting with the controls, but I'm not exactly sure what would have worked better. Eventually I got it, though. I like the art style. Nice job.

peachtreeoath 2017-12-09 08:42

Wow this is actually a really clever game. I haven't seen anything quite like it other than maybe Spy vs Spy on the NES where you had to remember which furnitures you placed all your traps in. I like that I can play with some mild memory strategy to it. I was sorting a pillar by warm colors on the left, cool colors on the right in the later stages to help with recall speed. In addition, I liked that execution speed mattered as well so the game ended up feeling very frantic in a good way. You absolutely nailed the theme on its head!

papaver 2017-12-09 17:36

@fractalsunrise: thanks! :D

@bryceltaylor: Yes, I agree that you have to get used to the controls... At first I had not implemented the up-arrow key, but then brute forcing (without looking at what you actually found) was working too well...

@peachtreeoath: thank you for your nice comment! I was wondering how players would sort the boxes (if people would sort at all), thanks for sharing your strategy. :)

igor-kingamer 2017-12-11 02:09

Three words:

Fits the theme amazingly, if not perfectly, both regarding the "story" and the gameplay.

Complementing what has been said about the controls, I think you could improve it so when you have a box open and moves (left or right), the box closes automatically -- although you can already just move and store the box anywhere without closing it, so it's more of an aesthetic thing. Also, I find it somewhat cumbersome what you have to do after you find the right item. Seems like it would be better to close or store the empty box automatically.

Overall, everything fits very well. Great job!

vasco-rodrigues 2017-12-12 01:42

Great game. It's really well made, loved the art and audio. The concept is really interesting and it was a great approach to the theme. It's a shame that I'm so bad at these type of games, by the third level it was already too difficult for me :P

Had some trouble with the controls at first, I kept switching all the keys. But by the end of the second level I already got the hang of it.

Congratulations on your game! :)

thrillho 2017-12-12 01:43

The only thing that would make this more realistic would be to add a lot of grumbled swear words when you get the wrong item. Excellent work!

gomango999 2017-12-12 01:51

A fun memory game that really fit the theme. Good job!

papaver 2017-12-12 11:36

@igor-kingamer: thank you for the kind words and the suggestion! I will try that for the post-compo version :)

@vasco-rodrigues: Thanks! Perhaps I should have added some more easy levels. It gets quite frantic indeed. ;)

@thrillho: Thanks! I'll make some more grumpy sounds for the post-compo edition. ;)

@gomango999: thanks :)

megalink 2017-12-14 01:16

This is a brilliant game! The sound effects are really well made. The game idea is very innovative, and while it takes some time to get used to the controls, it later on becomes a very fun experience. Great work!

cubeeo 2017-12-14 02:40

The title and concept makes perfect sense; I think everyone can relate to it on some level. Your game also fits the theme quite well.

This game's a bit difficult. First play-through, I'm acquainting myself with the keys. On the third try, I beat level 1. Then, I go to level 2, and the directions are gone. Unfortunately, I still didn't have the best grasp on the keys. I needed the directions to still be there. Heck, even with the directions, I sometimes had trouble - pressing the wrong directional key.

flubz 2017-12-14 03:45

Really nice game, adorable even. But like every game this Jam, holy crap is it difficult! I will say, given some practice you could get really good at it though, which makes it super fun. That said, I couldn't get past the 3rd one. Again, wonderful game, well done!

ponchoguy 2017-12-16 01:30

Hey! Thanks for jumping on my stream last night - This game was really fun and I'm glad I got to the end :relieved:

I loved the boxes and how frantic it was getting the items needed to finish the level - DEAR COULD YOU.. grr

It was a great experience and there were no glaring faults that I could really pick up on  played right for me and I liked the pacing with the level format!

For admin sake, and for my own ego - It would be great to see a menu screen with the 4 levels (locked to start with obviously) but with a time score and a grade? it would be great to see A+ ranks across the board and it will give people a good reason to replay

Great session! Definately one of the favourite games on stream! :yum:

pvtroswold 2017-12-16 18:59

I liked this, the cutscenes were really endearing, and I wish it was this much fun to find stuff packed away in real life... loved it!

EDIT: Also, fumbling with the controls a bit felt realistic as well, haha, rummaging through boxes shouldn't be super smooth!

glock00 2017-12-19 16:05

Brilliant little game! I needed to get used to the controls but after that I enjoyed it! I made it to the 2nd level, I'm too bad at memory games :) I loved the voices especially...

sarafilipa 2017-12-20 14:49

Omg I love this. Super charming game with lovely graphics, animations and audio. Pretty innovative concept as well. :) Had a ton of fun. Congratulations!

totsboy 2017-12-21 06:58

I love the idea! Very polished overall, nice animations and controls well!

secretpocketcat 2017-12-21 12:08

Great game, but I didn't get used to the controls. If space and up were flipped I'd probably do much better, but that's mostly on me. It also took me a try or two to realise I had to find different things and not '3 of that'. But that's definitely my fault...

lilkrit 2017-12-23 15:33

I think this is the best game I played this LD... I am being serious. The graphics and sounds are awesome and I like how cute and christmas themed everything is! The gameplay was very fun too as soon as I figured out the controls (they were not very intuitive) but I got used to them soon and the game became addictive!

jordgubben 2017-12-23 17:31

The struggles of the every-day-man, distilled. Very interesting idea.

I can't really put my fingers on why, but I keep pressing the wrong keys when opening boxes and putting them back. Perhaps the "Found it" could be automatic, thus reducing the number of buttons a bit.

papaver 2017-12-23 20:25

@ponchoguy: Thanks for playing, and congrats that you made it till the end! Thanks for the suggestion, I would have to think about how to implement some kind of score, just based on how much time is left? Or maybe on how many times a box was unnecessarily opened? ;)

@lilkrit: Thanks! :) It's actually not even that much christmas themed, just one christmas ball and a star. Oh, and maybe the candles. ;)

@jordgubben: I had that at first, that you automatically collected the item if it was the right one, but I liked it more that you actually have to pay attention and look at what you just found and then act if it is the right item. Without this, the game can almost be played without even looking at what you are searching for.

multiplexor 2017-12-28 01:02

Nice! love the approach to the theme, and the grandpas look so lovely!

Nice art, nice music and nice mechanics, only thing I did not like is that in the end it felt a bit like a chore with some many boxes :P

Keep up the good work! :D

jasperarmstrong 2017-12-28 03:20

Very nice little game. I had a lot of fun with it. The controls seemed kind of unintuitive to me, but I got used to them. I don't think getting rid of the control display after the first level was a good idea. The art and music were very charming. Also, the game got very hectic (in a good way) in the later levels when I needed to find more items. Overall, very well done!

alexrose 2017-12-28 03:47

It's good, but I would use some hackery if I were you. Instead of making the items random at spawn, I would make them random based on your opening. Sometimes I would get to the final couple of boxes before ever finding the item I needed. So even if I remembered every item perfectly, I still wouldn't be able to get there on the time delay. I'd make it so all unopened boxes are basically a quantum suerposition of the remaining items, and it purposely pushes forward the items that would be helpful if you haven't discovered them yet and you've already opened a significant number of boxes.

Like I would even make it so the last few boxes are essentially pointless since there's no real chance of going through all the boxes in time. There's maybe too many to remember at once, apparently humans are bad at remembering sequences longer than 5 in their subconsciousness so you have to be consciously aware of a tonne of items at once, and their ordering. Which, I know is the whole point of the game but it's maybe a little excessive.

Nice graphics, style, good use of theme, good job.

abcdef65g 2017-12-28 04:16

Awesome game! I liked the voices and the graphics a lot. The whole concept reminded me a bit of Hanoi Towers, except much more stressful, haha. I used to think I was good at memory games, and then I got stuck at the 2nd stage and had to rethink things...

I'm also surprised that you did everything except for the music. For a simple game, it's pretty polished and fun. Excellent job!

dollarone 2017-12-28 12:53

Nice music and mood and feel. The game gets harder as you get more stuff! I found it hard even on level 3. I like that you keep the empty boxes, makes it more of a management game. Good game!

tinis-games 2017-12-28 18:28

That's a great idea! I must confess that I didn't find the controls very intuitive at first, many of them are not useful, since you can move an object without putting it back in its box.
