chubby-stick 2017-12-04 21:28

Love the lavalamp ! x)

compufreak 2017-12-04 21:35

Well.. This was... interesting xD

be3n2 2017-12-04 21:40

I was laughing at the beginning but after a little bit I was generally confused. I don't really understand what advances on. I realized sometimes it is a riddle but still I often found myself confused on where to click. Hilarious entry though, you deserve the five on that one. :)

nikchernyakov 2017-12-04 21:42

So it's like the art house game, but I like it. You really surprise **me**. I find some interesting gameplay and unexpected elements here. But I don't understand, how I must to kill "Single resource" theme.

cameronjsamuels 2017-12-04 21:44

This is a unique game.

And by the way, the font in the game isn't like what is in the screenshots, just so you know.

cubeeo 2017-12-04 21:45

@chubby-stick thanks, if you progress far enough, there are more lavalamps

cubeeo 2017-12-04 21:46

@compufreak I'm not sure if that's a compliment or not, but I'll take it - I understand my game is wacky

cubeeo 2017-12-04 21:48

@be3n2 thanks for the kind words... as for not being able to advance on, maybe in the future you'll try it again and it'll work out - i tried to make something short and fun... I don't think I made it too hard... actually, right before publishing, I was wondering if it was too easy... thanks for checking it out

cubeeo 2017-12-04 21:49

@nikchernyakov Thanks. Lol, I surprised myself. It was quite enjoyable to make. Thanks for the nice words. Maybe in the future, you figure out that part of the puzzle. Thanks for playing.

cubeeo 2017-12-04 21:56

@CameronJSamuels thanks, I did not know that...

cameronjsamuels 2017-12-04 22:09

@cubeeo, you're welcome!

Here's a screenshot just in case:

screenshot with wrong font

cubeeo 2017-12-04 22:16

@CameronJSamuels thanks for the screenshot... did all the texts look like that, or just that font? I used a variety of fonts... they look fine on my computer...

cameronjsamuels 2017-12-04 22:19

**ALL** of the fonts looked like the font in the screenshot. Maybe packaging the fonts with the game will work.

cubeeo 2017-12-04 22:28

@CameronJSamuels oh man, that sucks... and you got past the main starting screen? (everything up to the main starting screen is the same font)

cameronjsamuels 2017-12-04 22:36

I did get to play entire game (I think so), and the font was consistent throughout the game (the font was what is in the screenshot).

Sorry, but either way, I don't think it will make you get worse ratings, but you should still fix it (obviously).

cubeeo 2017-12-04 22:46

@CameronJSamuels thanks for the helpful info... that being said, I don't think you played the entire game... you would know if you beat the game - there would be no doubt :)

mc-crash 2017-12-05 03:10

I like you interpretation of the theme, the more none theme themes, the worse the theme rating ^^. Jokes aside this game took me by suprise. It was definitly interesting and wacky, but it made me chukle a few times.

cubeeo 2017-12-05 03:27

@MC_Crash I like your interpretation of my interpretation, and it's good that I'm not the only one laughing at my game. Thanks for having a good sense of humor. I hope you were able to beat the game and enjoy all it has to offer. :)

shaolin-dave 2017-12-05 18:10

I don't really get it. I might've gotten as far as I can but I'm not sure. "Theme Sucks" keeps flashing and I hear that voice over and over.

cklidify 2017-12-05 20:31

Yea as @CameronJSamuels said the font remained the same throughout the game, but either way it was funny up until I got stuck, It'd be cool if someone could post a walkthrough so I could see the rest of the lavalamps :(

cameronjsamuels 2017-12-05 22:09

Yeah, I got stuck too, @cklidify, according to @cubeeo. I like that idea of a walkthrough. Maybe @cubeeo, you could make an animated gif for the gameplay (you could screen record and convert), so people could understand how to continue if they got stuck like us (and probably more)

cubeeo 2017-12-05 23:30

@shaolin-dave Thanks for trying my game. There is definitely much more to experience within my game. @cklidify Thanks for confirming the font issue. Also, to you both and @cameronjsamuels and anyone else, I'm totally willing to give clues, hints, walkthrough etc, at some point, but I also want to give people the opportunity to try the game on their own first. So, I'll have to decide when is a good time to dole out solutions... any feedback on that would be appreciated.

cameronjsamuels 2017-12-05 23:46

@cubeeo, how about doing a "SPOILER: walkthrough gif link" in the game description. That could be good

kolbjorn 2017-12-06 00:01

Had no idea what to do until i started shooting, and so my story began. I ran and flew through time and space and dodged bullets from left to right. And as greedy as I were I collected everything in my path. Died twice but that aint stopping me, and as i bravely moved forward I found a vertical rainbow. I made peace with the rainbow and we became mates. That was the end of my journey, as I had nowhere to go and didn't want to leave the side of my new friend :)

Interesting, fun and cool game, good job!

cubeeo 2017-12-06 00:14

@kolbjorn Awesome, I'm happy you enjoyed it. Also, glad to learn someone definitely beat the game. Congratulations, my friend.

Also, I love your apt description of your experience.

eldogg 2017-12-06 19:09

I though I wasn't confused until I pressed the spacebar.

rolle 2017-12-06 19:19

Well this was kind of...Monty Pythonesque? Not sure I love it or hate it. ;) I love it of course! I THINK I made it to the end, a rainbow. Don't know if that was the end. Or if I won. Or lost. I don't care. Thanks for the experience!

cubeeo 2017-12-06 19:26

"I though I wasn’t confused until I pressed the spacebar." @eldogg I love it!

cubeeo 2017-12-06 19:29

@rolle Thanks for the compliment. When I was making it (and having a lot of fun making it) I thought people would either love it, hate it, or think I was batshit crazy. Ha. Yes, you made it to the end. If you win the game, and wait a moment, it'll take you back to the beginning. But, first, you're supposed to re-join up with your long, lost friend. :) Also, I love your comment, "Or if I won. Or lost. I don't care." Awesome!!! You're welcome. Thanks for enjoying playing it as much as I enjoyed making it.

nekoballs 2017-12-06 20:49

Thought the game bugged out at first but I eventually got it when me broke loose, trippy af.

Great game for a first jam! Different from most entries which is a big plus!

neecko 2017-12-06 20:52

This was clever. Trippy but clever. ;)

cubeeo 2017-12-06 21:02

@neecko and @nekoballs Thanks. I'm glad you found it trippy, and glad I get to experience some of my own trippiness right now, responding to two neecko's simultaneously... lol. Also, this being my first jam, I've definitely come to realize that "being different" is, indeed, a big plus. So, thanks for that.

Wow, @neecko - the person that made "I took too many drugs" is calling my entry "trippy." Now, THAT is trippy.

porcus-pie 2017-12-07 07:13

This was definitely an experience, but a pretty decent one. I was so confused as what to do at first, I had clicked everything and the me had fallen off, so I was pretty stuck. Then I pressed "space" and had a moment of realization. The incorporation of everything was rather amusing, and I did find some of the little comments littered throughout funny. I didn't get to finish the game just due to being pretty confused about how to get a few of the last themes (like the one in the block and the three colours), but from what I did see if was trippy to say the least. The gravity was a bit odd, as I felt you moved really heavily, but the gameplay other than that was quite solid, minue a few little jumps. I definitely did enjoy this game however, and it was a lot of fun to play and enjoy all the little inside jokes.

justking144 2017-12-07 07:27

This game confused and angered me 5/5

nikorasuchan 2017-12-07 07:30

I don't really like the audio spamming, tho the hidden game behind it is a pretty cool idea. But if only this has higher production quality, rather than just spamming random audio. Also the the audio is still playing even after the game restarts. Considering you are using Construct 2, and that you've decided to make the game based on all the themes in the final round, you should have way more time to implement things. But in this case, its something that I could pull off in way lesser time.

juancarlosgdm 2017-12-07 14:31

What a crazy and unique game!! And I must say, it's the first one I've tried this jam that probably won't forget in a while! I really liked your innovation and fresh air. Congrats!!

cubeeo 2017-12-07 17:53

@porcus-pie Thanks for the useful feedback. I'm glad you enjoyed my game. A single resource is typically the theme people have the most trouble with, so you're not alone in that aspect.

cubeeo 2017-12-07 17:54

@justking144 Lol, thanks for playing.

cubeeo 2017-12-07 17:56

@juancarlosgdm Thank you for the kind words. I really appreciate it. Glad you found my game experience to be unforgettable - I think that's a high compliment. Thanks.

safrmo 2017-12-07 22:53

Very unique, very interesting - I found it really frustrating but I loved it. Good work making an unusual experience!

refinedsalt 2017-12-07 23:14

Okay, that gave me a little bit of a giggle. Well played, I wonder how many people figured out what you were meant to do

cubeeo 2017-12-07 23:21

@safrmo Thank you. If someone can be frustrated and yet still loves it, that sounds like an accomplishment to me. Thank you for your feedback. Glad you found my game to be unique.

cubeeo 2017-12-07 23:25

@refinedsalt It's a good question. I too wonder how many people did not get past the "start page." But, I also didn't want to make things too easy. It's a balancing act, for sure. From what I can tell, from comments and such, I think a sufficient amount of people were able to experience a large portion of the game. And, I also know some people fully beat it. Of course, some never even got to the end of the "start page."

@refinedsalt How far did you get?

fdr 2017-12-08 03:36

I am not sure what was happening but I agreed with most of it.

cubeeo 2017-12-08 04:31

@fdr OK! I agree with most of your comment.

ratbird 2017-12-08 18:39

Nice improvisation

cubeeo 2017-12-08 21:10

@ratbird Thank you, I did my best.

edmond00 2017-12-09 02:06

I think you should indicate that the player can use the keyboard at some point because at first only the mouse is used and I was thinking it was that all along so I did not know how progress until I read comment. Also it is a little annoying to restart from the text popping screen when you die.

cubeeo 2017-12-09 21:38

@edmond00 Thanks for the feedback; the dev team (me) is taking notes on input for future output. Frankly, I should've realized that about where you re-start and changed it, because as I was developing it and play-testing it over and over, I got tired of having to continually re-start there myself. Although, I may have realized that too far along in the process anyway, at which point there was no going back. As it was, this was my third different idea I tried to develop for this contest (the first one I spent several hours on and then threw in the trash). I'm new, I'll get better.

What I was hoping to achieve was the following: I get brilliant player who knows lots and lots about games. They come to my little game and "click" early on, as they are told. And, they enjoy Act 1 - The Start Page. Then, they are given a "player" and are forced to realize "oh, this is actual game." I tried to make that part as obvious as possible with the name of the "player", starting that jet thrust sound and having the "player" move. I then hoped my brilliant gameplayers would then count on their wits - I've played games before, what do I normally do with character? Do I move it? Sure. Ok, good. Let's go... And off we go...

I understand that some people never made it to that point, but I also wanted my brilliant gameplayers who beat the game to feel rewarded, like they accomplished something, because they did - they are brilliant! YAY!

sayomgwtf 2017-12-10 01:41

I am not entirely sure what just happened, but it certainly surprised me and made me laugh haha - quite the unique idea, that's for sure :3

cubeeo 2017-12-10 01:49

@sayomgwtf Thank you. I'm glad you didn't rip your eyeballs out of your sockets trying to play my game.

sayomgwtf 2017-12-10 02:01

I actually shared the game with other dev frands :p

jebouin 2017-12-10 10:16

The beginning made me laugh (especially the sounds), then I was a bit confused during the shmup part. The collisions are a bit weird, I have no idea if you can destroy the theme at the top and what to do next.

5/5 Theme :D

tulipekoni 2017-12-10 10:25

wtf I'm generally confused right now. It just froze. Am I doing something wrong?!

work5.png

cubeeo 2017-12-10 11:30

@tulipekoni it didn't freeze - keep going - you can do eet ... or, maybe you got drunk playing your own game :D

cubeeo 2017-12-10 11:37

@jebouin Yes, the collisions are a bit weird. The number of themes that need to be killed before you advance corresponds directly to the number on the wall before the portal. So, if you haven't killed that many yet, then you can't go through the portal yet. And, from the sound of it, you're missing at least one.

tulipekoni 2017-12-10 14:00

@cubeeo lol :D maybe

ethan-kennerly 2017-12-10 17:04

When I read the warning screen, I felt tickled. When I saw the lavalamp and text and clicked on things on screen and nothing happened, I felt either disappointed or clueless.

gris 2017-12-10 21:17

GREAT in innovation and humour! Congrats on a totally different game!

cubeeo 2017-12-10 22:14

@ethan-kennerly Thanks for the feedbacks. A concern of mine throughout the creation process was the balancing act of what to tell the player / what not to tell the player. Less clues? More clues? Hard to tell. So, thanks for feedback. Your input has been notated to improve future output.

cubeeo 2017-12-10 22:15

@gris Thanks Batman!

petr-belohlavek 2017-12-11 16:16

Well, this was quite an experience. I like the overall idea. However, I wasn't able to do anything after falling me.

jk5000 2017-12-11 18:39

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

cubeeo 2017-12-12 00:05

@jk5000 Hmmmmmmmmm

cubeeo 2017-12-12 00:08

@petr-belohlavek Cool. Unfortunately, there are multiple occurrences of a falling me, so if you're on the first occurrence, press an arrow key. If you're on the last occurrence, the game is about to end, and will return you to the very beginning once everything comes to a halt. I do recommend watching the ending; no story is complete without an ending. :)

jk5000 2017-12-12 18:05

@cubeeo Hmmmmm

shinyogre 2017-12-13 04:39

I am intrigued by this enigma of a game. I love games in which the rules and mechanics are not taught, but have to be discovered. I feel like I am exploring not only the makeup of the system of the game, but also the mind of its creator.

I really appreciate this game. It is clear that you are dedicated to your craft.

cubeeo 2017-12-13 04:50

@shinyogre I appreciate the insightful comments.

red-fan-games 2017-12-13 05:36

I got to the part where you click on me.

I think the real fun to be had in this game is just discovering what will happen when you click the right thing. The whole mood of it just felt "right" in some strange sense. I think some sort of "ramp-up" to the confusion would be good to help those who can not intuit things well(like a quick assortment to clicks to introduce the "mechanics" if you can call them that). Many people who rate your game will not be very intelegent/able to figure things out/work through problems. Many others will figure things out very quickly and will become uninterested if you do not challenge them. The best ludum dare games design for both of these crowds in mind when designing their game. I have not mastered this myself, but I think this is what one should strive for.

Overall, definitely weird and unlike any other game I have ever played. For better or for worse.

broccoli 2017-12-13 06:35

I generally like these kinds of experimental games, but I got stuck pretty early here and couldn't figure out how to progress.

cubeeo 2017-12-13 07:45

@red-fan-games Yeah, what you're suggesting about designing for all kinds of crowds is no easy task. In the process of catering to one crowd, another crowd can become dis-interested and vice versa. I definitely didn't want to make things too easy. And, a side effect of that was that a fair number of people weren't able to enjoy the whole experience. But, I'm glad you enjoyed the portion you were able to experience. Throughout the creation process, I was aware that I'd have mixed reactions to my game; all I can hope for is that some people enjoyed it. Thanks for your comments, especially the one about mood - it's interesting how a game with so little graphics and audio proficiency gave you that feeling - it's good to know. And, frankly, I just like to know how far people got. I kind of wish I had an exit poll surveying people to find that out.

cubeeo 2017-12-13 07:47

@broccoli Thanks for trying my game anyway, and for partaking in my informal survey of how far people progressed.

blubberquark 2017-12-13 08:19

Kind of like a towlr http://towlr.ludumdare.com/ or like FATHOM http://adamatomic.com/fathom/, but eh. Based on what you wrote on the blog, there is no point to telling you what I thought about the mechanics of the gamey part..., so I won't.

I wish there was a was to see if/when anything had changed and become interactable, because I restarted it once and noticed things did not immediately become clickable.

cubeeo 2017-12-13 09:06

@blubberquark Cool beans.

casper 2017-12-13 15:23

Really abstract.

ronanrory 2017-12-15 03:13

Short but silly, even if it's a little TOO short, and not THAT silly. But eh, this was your first entry so I'm okay with it

cubeeo 2017-12-15 13:37

@casper Thanks for the feedback.

@ronanrorry Yeah, it's short, I just hope it's enjoyable. It's not just my first LD, it's also my first jam and first time uploading a game to itch, so I wanted to start the upload process several hours early, and I'm glad I did because it actually took me an hour or two to get the upload to work here (because my game was titled "Theme", which was an issue, but I didn't realize it at the time.) It was much more comfortable to "have upload issues" several hours before the deadline, then right at the deadline. Hopefully, next time, I'll make something a bit longer. Though, I'm proud of this. It was fun.

cubeeo 2017-12-15 13:43

"I wish there was a way to see if/when anything had changed and become interactable"

@blubberquark

I totally understand that. It makes perfect sense, I'm just not sure how to do it without being like "Hey, click/look here!"

kromeboy 2017-12-16 08:55

on my first game I got some sort of glitch with the enemies (probably because i have opened the game to full screen).

The idea is funny but it require a little to much "mind reading" :-) Some hint could improve drastically the game

pvtroswold 2017-12-16 19:47

Hm.

cubeeo 2017-12-17 02:57

@kromeboy I've had no other mentions of possible glitches. Can you elaborate? And, are you sure it's not just developer quirkiness?

@pvtroswold I agree, as has been stated before. (Nice icon.)

ddrkirbyisq 2017-12-17 04:58

type a comment here

sgadrat 2017-12-21 21:45

Hmm, I succeed to progress to the point the "me" is falling... On my second try. I would have loved to have more clues on what to do, or not do, or whatever

cubeeo 2017-12-22 15:15

@sgadrat Thanks for playing and for the feedback.

hilvon 2018-01-04 13:35

Finally played this one...

Well... There is definitely a good example of old LucasArt quests, with counterintuitive quests, when you often have to resort to clicking everything because you have no clue how to progress.

Also... I'm still not sure if I progressed through the entire game or not...

And by the sound of clicking on "me" I really thought it should take off upwards rather than fall off...

EDIT: Yay... I finally figured where the GAME is... :)

ajayajayaj 2018-01-04 18:48

This game definitely doesn't deserve 7th worse. I couldn't figure it out, until I saw in the comments someone mentioned the space bar. Really like the sound effects :D

cubeeo 2018-01-05 03:51

@hilvon

"And by the sound of clicking on “me” I really thought it should take off upwards rather than fall off…"

Yeah, it does (or can... actually will need to / be forced to when you drive into a wall) but I guess you figured that out in the "EDIT"

@ajayajayaj Yeah, thanks, so like 14th worst? :nerd: I gotta say while I fully understand people not knowing what to do / click in many instances I'm still baffled about people not figuring out the space bar (there's a wall of text that says Space). It initially says "Limited Space" but once you drive through it Space remains perpetually (at the exact moment when you finally need to press space). Frankly though, I think people are confusing the need to press the space bar with the arrow keys.

My next entry is definitely going to have no guessing about controls though.

Thanks for the feedback.

ajayajayaj 2018-01-05 18:44

I find one of the most important things in Ludum Dare is to have controls shown to the user, even if they don't want it, because otherwise people will be confused. Even controls in the description are sometimes not enough.
