eraleis 2017-12-04 16:45

Nice little game, but i didn't find it to become much harder when you got a ton of coins

kkneville 2017-12-04 16:49

I love it! It's so frustrating how the ship gets slower the more loaded up with gold you are, it's great. You really feel the cost of acquiring gold. Nice work!

jlreymendez 2017-12-04 16:49

@eraleis Thanks for playing our game. Only the ship that has the most coins suffers the penalty. Were you able to win by just grabbing coins?

jlreymendez 2017-12-04 16:52

Thanks @kkneville! We are glad you are finding all these pirates frustrating!

2017-12-04 18:03

Awesome game! But sadly, pretty hard for my brain :(

jlreymendez 2017-12-04 18:07

Thanks for stoping by @fefo! Give your brain some rest and come back with a bottle of beer or better yet a cup of grog! Arrgh!

colossal-gnome 2017-12-04 18:31

Pretty fun little game. I like the graphics, I appreciate the piratey sea music. Nice artwork & controls. My only complaint would that it took me a bit to figure out which ship was mine when gameplay started. I think maybe the 'select a ship' needs to be more visible.. some of my trouble may be the game-jam hangover from lack of sleep though ;)

Great job!

jlreymendez 2017-12-04 18:33

Thanks for playing @colossal-gnome! Yeah, I understand what you mean. We went for the ship selection at the start hoping that would help identify your ship. But I have had people say the same thing so it seems we failed to do so.

Arts and sounds are from free sources, check out the credits to find them. :)

wujood 2017-12-04 18:37

Why would you not want to be rated for you graphics? they are awesome.

jlreymendez 2017-12-04 18:45

Thanks @wujood but they are not ours! Find them at http://kenney.nl/assets/pirate-pack

fenerax 2017-12-04 19:30

Sometimes a bit awkward to see which ship was yours. However, other that than really nice game.

talia 2017-12-04 19:30

Arrr Arrr! Give me your Gold!

It's fun to play =)

jlreymendez 2017-12-04 19:36

@Fenerax Thanks for playing! Yes that seems to be a bit of a problem in general. I guess some visual queue is missing.

@Talia Take it if you want it, but I don't recommend it.. haha! Thanks for playing!

bradur 2017-12-04 19:37

I liked the arcade feel of the game. The movement felt a little choppy at first but once you got the hang of it felt intuitive. I liked that you blow up when the pirate catches you :D.

jlreymendez 2017-12-04 19:49

@bradur Thanks for playing! Those pirate sure love to blow stuff up!

jeremy-wolf 2017-12-04 20:30

So much better after I read the directions... :) Nicely done, controls are pretty good. The SFX made me laugh.

colossal-gnome 2017-12-04 20:34

@jlreymendez: I think maybe all you need is a darker background behind the ship selector, and the 'select your ship' text to be a lighter color, maybe a bit larger. it all kind of blends into the gameboard beneath right now, ought to be a pretty easy fix.

Something along the lines of this, for example... b23d.jpg

jlreymendez 2017-12-04 20:41

@jeremy-wolf Haha, yeah it's counter intuitive at start. Thanks for playing! SFX are from several sources check the credits if you are interested.

@colossal-gnome Yeah, shouldn't be too hard, but yes the arrows kind of blend with the islands behind it. Thanks for sharing your thoughts

rob-white 2017-12-04 21:00

Nice arcade style gameplay. Like a multiplayer pac man. The movement was slightly frustrating (when I wanted to turn around a corner it was hard to tell whether I was about to get caught on the wall or pass around the corner.

neowedge 2017-12-04 21:30

Funny concept!

jlreymendez 2017-12-04 21:31

@rob-white Thanks! Yes indeed, the idea came from a pac man deathmatch. Didn't get time to make it multiplayer but it might come in the future.

Turning is hard until you get use to it. We did some improvements to it but it is still sometimes difficult.

jlreymendez 2017-12-04 21:32

@neowedge Thanks!

madbeagle 2017-12-04 21:52

Not often you get AI in a compo game, nice work.

jlreymendez 2017-12-04 22:05

@madbeagle Thanks! We are three programmers so we needed to get those hands busy :P

schu 2017-12-04 23:27

Great work with the AI! The game feels very complete and it fits the theme well.

exezin 2017-12-05 01:23

Interesting spin on the pac-man genre, doesn't seem to get overly difficult over time though ^^

koemeterion 2017-12-05 01:31

I had some problems with the control at first, but after a few trys I got into it. Fun game, with a great mood, good looking. Nice game!

jlreymendez 2017-12-05 01:38

@schu thanks for your kind words! We are happy with it.

@exezin you are a very capable pirate then.. arrr! Thanks for playing!

@koemeterion we are glad you like it. Thanks!

smogen 2017-12-05 01:51

2017-12-05 02_48_15-Greedy Merchants by jlreymendez.png

Very cool game! Took me a second to get how one turns into a white-flag ship and a pirate. Its really fun. Would accually love to play this at a lan-party. Calming, fun music and I absolutly love the 'ARRGH!' The graphics were nice aswell, especially the little horse on the flag.

What can I say, I got to be a pirate. Loved it!

jlreymendez 2017-12-05 01:58

Thanks for playing @smogen! We are thinking of adding multiplayer maybe

bradleysmith 2017-12-05 03:07

Neat little entry here. :)

versatile-box 2017-12-05 03:23

It took me a while to get a hold of the game. Pretty challenging! Subtle mechanics and overall fun to play. Nice work! Nos vemos el martes! :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye: #Arrgh

jlreymendez 2017-12-05 11:29

Thanks @bradleysmith!

See you soon @versatile-box and thanks for stoping by and playing!

orcdraco 2017-12-05 13:47

Nice game! The game is simple, but it was really fun to play. Nice selection of audio/graphics as well. Great job on the AI too.

jlreymendez 2017-12-05 14:36

Thanks for playing @orcdraco!

ciaccodavide 2017-12-05 15:29

Nice game! Played more than I expected! :D

atlasarg 2017-12-05 16:00

Thanks for playing @ciaccodavide !

atlasarg 2017-12-05 16:01

Thanks for all the reviews till now! We are very happy with the results.

2017-12-05 18:16

Very nice game! Loved the music, turning mechanics were a bit confusing at first. Looking forward to multiplayer! Arrrgh

jlreymendez 2017-12-05 18:20

Thanks for playing @facu!

rolle 2017-12-05 19:46

Beautiful game, liked it a lot! Never got the be quite comfy with the controls though, kept steering into islands a stopping. :-/ Is there a way to "win"? I never succeeded though, but I'm not really good with ships it seems. Mote "levels" and perhaps "missions" to solve would maybe make it a bit more "gamy". Thanks for creating the game!

jlreymendez 2017-12-05 19:58

Thanks for your feedback @rolle! We enjoyed making this game so you are welcome! :)

There is a way to win although it might be counter intuitive. The levels or missions idea is something we might do, but we might think of it as a multiplayer game. We will see.. Thanks again!

hbocao 2017-12-05 22:16

To be honest, I did not played a lot of games, but so far, this is my favorite. I loved how you played around with the weight idea. I just think that there should be a way to "deposit" or drop the coins (instead of just hiding from the pirate in a corner hehe). I loved this. Please continue to work on it.

owc 2017-12-05 22:26

Original mechanic and interesting gameplay. The AI is pretty good it's challenge to fight with them. Good entry!

jlreymendez 2017-12-05 22:33

Thanks you @hbocao! We thought about the deposit mechanic but didn't have enough time to develop it. We will keep it in mind for future changes!

Thanks for playing @owc! The AI can be improved a lot yet, but we are happy with what we got in the allotted time.

mr-matt 2017-12-06 00:36

Very cool! Its a little annoying how you can rotate into the wall, I'd suggest doing it the way pacman does it so that you can only rotate down the line of the path, and turn only once the space opens, if that makes any sense...

jlreymendez 2017-12-06 00:47

Thanks for playing and the feedback @mr-matt! Yeah we were going for something like that but with the ability to allow you to stop on your tracks by simply turning against a wall. But we wanted to make the turning smart which we failed to do, with some practice it gets easier though.

mr-matt 2017-12-06 00:53

@jlreymendez ah that makes sense, I suppose with the time frame that wasn't a priority anyway

jlreymendez 2017-12-06 02:25

@mr-matt Totally true

sidewalksleeper 2017-12-06 09:21

Wow, I really enjoyed this one! Such a simple but beautiful concept. Well done!

jlreymendez 2017-12-06 10:25

Thanks @sidewalksleeper! We are glad you enjoyed it.

cawrtz 2017-12-06 10:30

Fun game and great interpretation of the theme :)

jlreymendez 2017-12-06 10:38

Thanks for playing @cawrtz!

cocapasteque 2017-12-06 13:35

Really good game, loved it ! Hard as well but really good for a game jam ! Loved the audio and the "Aaarrr" !

kciwsolb 2017-12-06 13:37

Enjoyed the game! Nice job.

sahilts 2017-12-06 13:41

Amazing game ,great concept! The menu is something to improve ,otherwise its perfect!

exnihilo 2017-12-06 13:49

Nice one. The conflicting ways to improve your score naturally lead to experimenting with different strategies, which is always interesting, although I felt the balance was somewhat shifted in favor of playing as the pirate.

xahell 2017-12-06 13:56

Cool concept, the "Awrrr" is awesome ^_^

Maybe highlight the player's ship, it tends to be confusing when you lose it.

kevin-mooney 2017-12-06 13:57

This game is good! We also came up with a pirate theme, so it's really cool to see variations on the concept! I liked the gameplay and the controls are solid. I also like the music, it fits the pirate theme well.

atlasarg 2017-12-06 14:32

Thanks for playing @kciwsolb!!

Thanks @sahilts !!! Yes, we know that the menu is something we should correct.

Thanks @exnihilo for the review. Maybe we should check the balance as you recomend ;).

@xahell we also loved the "Awrrr!" You advice about highlighing the player is very useful!

I will check your game @kevin-mooney!! Thanks a lot for your review!!!

lunardust 2017-12-06 17:43

can't stop playing! great AI! i love the music. the turning control is a little confusing.

likirus 2017-12-06 17:49

overall nice game, I haven't really figured out how to win yet though, I may just be bad ^^ At first I sometimes got stuck on the islands, but after a while I got more used to it and didnt crash that often And maybe the respawning could have happened at the same point where you died, so you didnt have to search the screen for your ship again ( or the above mentioned highlight either all the time or only when respawning at a different location )

x-budsterized-x 2017-12-06 17:49

Hello, @atlasarg please add this game to your profile so people can see it and access it from there, I got here just thanks to your feed post :)

To the game itself - amazing! Nice concept, great sounds/music, great artstyle, easy to understand the mechanics and I like how good the AI is! Very nice! I like it a lot! :)

georgebgreen 2017-12-06 17:51

Really fun game! Those are some solid mechanics! I feel like this could probably be made into a small couch co-op game with a little more work! Great job!

jlreymendez 2017-12-06 18:06

Thanks for your kind words @lunardust!

Thanks for playing @likirus! There is a way of winning the game so keep at it and think of the theme. Also thanks for your feedback on the controls and the visibility!

Thanks for the kind words@x-budsterized-x! And yes @atlasarg should put the game on his profile thanks for reminding him.. ;)

We are glad that you like it @georgebgreen! We are starting to think about how to move this game forward. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

akusan 2017-12-06 21:14

Wow. This is impressive especially done on Compo. Great art, music, and pirates are always fun. Great job!

mambojambo 2017-12-06 21:23

Great game! Overall this is a really nice concept and a neat little prototype. The setting and atmosphere is also really compelling. The game is also nailing the theme, The core game mechanic of the game is pretty solid. Where the game needs some more work is in the design aspects. Some more tweaking of different properties in the game could have made it more balanced and therefore more enjoyable to play. The design part is hard, especially when it is a jam game so I understand that you didn't have time to polish. I feel like the UI could need some more work as well. However, overall a really good job!

jlreymendez 2017-12-06 22:36

Thanks for playing @akusan! This was actually made for the jam but we did it in 48 hours!

Thank you for your feedback @mambojambo! Yes, totally true we need to review the game design variables and maybe add a few mechanics to help the merchants out. But as you said we did have little time to do it, in fact it was just the last thing we did and with only a few hours to test it. We might go back and make a better playtest and analyze it soon.

feedlipe 2017-12-07 01:41

that a pretty nice game, sadly there is no vote for audio or graphics, the atmosphere of your game is pretty good. The pirate ship is soooo fast, loved it.

If you need more deep info, you can summon me here. Hope I can help you with this feedback. Also, if possible check my game too.

jlreymendez 2017-12-07 02:25

Thanks @feedlipe! Please share with us any thoughts you might have about it. We did put some work into finding the right atmosphere with the graphics and audio, but the sources are external so we decided to opt-out of those categories. Still the comments are appreciated since we did work on finding the right ones and added a little editing on the sounds.

We will certainly test your game!

mik3 2017-12-07 09:42

Not sure why the graphics rating is disabled, since the visuals are pretty nice. But other than that the game was nice, even though it was a bit hard for me, however I liked it overall.

lamossus 2017-12-07 12:11

It doesn't feel beneficial to collect coins, you will gain much more points by intentionally becoming pirate and sinking others, plus the speed penalty is way too much

jlreymendez 2017-12-07 12:42

Thanks for playing @mik3! The graphics are disabled because the art is not ours. You can check out the authors assets in http://kenney.nl

"The more you have, the worse it is" @lamossus, but yeah if this were to turn into a full game we would need to add some balance and maybe some mechanics to help those merchants out. Thanks for playing and leaving feedback!

qszhu 2017-12-07 12:43

very interesting gameplay! turning at corners has some bug

dunin 2017-12-07 12:48

NIce idea, i could be a fun little multiplayer game (in a party game for example). Maybe the speed can be relative to the number of gold of each boat (not only the extremes). Nice mood.

jlreymendez 2017-12-07 14:16

@qszhu yeah, turning has some difficulties. I wouldn't call it a bug but it is certainly what has brought the most complains. Thanks for sharing your feedback!

Thanks for playing and sharing your ideas @dunin! We might play around with that relative speed idea.

sorlok 2017-12-07 14:17

Game was fun! I kept getting stuck on corners, though, which was not so much fun. The mechanics worked well --any chance of getting this as a multiplayer game? :D

angelonias 2017-12-07 15:46

Nice art and I had fun playing it! The game fits perfectly the theme. Great job!

jlreymendez 2017-12-07 16:08

@sorlok we are thinking off continuing development and add some sort of multiplayer. Stay tuned! Thanks for playing!

Thanks @angelonians! Art is from Kenney. Check it out at http://kenney.nl

gamedevmumin 2017-12-07 19:50

Really like the idea! It would be pretty funny if you added a multiplayer to that! Playing your game with friend would be amazing! : D But it was very difficult to avoid other ships when you had first place! :D

jlreymendez 2017-12-07 21:12

Thanks @gamedevmumin! Multiplaye would probably be a blast, we will think about it as we decide how to improve this!

moonlightbomber 2017-12-08 02:02

So it's like Pac-Man, only that gobbling more pellets makes you slower.

jlreymendez 2017-12-08 02:19

@moonlightbomber Yes, but not quite. Thanks for playing!

blubberquark 2017-12-08 16:07

I got stuck on beaches a lot. At first it wasn't clear, I would have liked instructions, but after losing the first game against AIs, I understood. At least I knew _why_ I lost when I lost my second game.

Also @mik3: I recognised the art style immediately. They got the graphics from @Kenney - https://kenney.nl/assets/pirate-pack

This is totally allowed in the JAM rules, but getting a high score for Kenney's graphics assets while Kenney is possibly also competing in this LD would be a dick move. So everybody has done the right thing here.

jlreymendez 2017-12-08 16:14

Thanks for sharing your feedback @blubberquark! Did you read the instructions prior to playing? If you did were they unclear?

Also thanks for sharin @Kenney 's profile i wasn't aware he had participated on previous ludum's. That's awesome! Personal thanks to him!

blubberquark 2017-12-08 17:20

I didn't understand that *I* become the pirate when I have the least coins. It seems obvious in hindsight.

niklas988 2017-12-08 23:33

Nice game! Would love a multiplayer function. Love the music and simple yet cool design.

jlreymendez 2017-12-08 23:36

Thanks @niklas988 for playing this on your twitch session! We are glad you liked it!

umsingelopugmanco 2017-12-09 00:03

Please make multiplayer version as post-mortem.

Also, could you make it so that going around edges is a little bit easier?

cliff-lee-cl 2017-12-09 11:44

Great and polished entry!

Can't wait to see this game with local multiplayer mode (but the pace needs to be faster) :)

moski 2017-12-09 14:26

Fascinating spin on ye olde Pac-man formula. The implementation of AI and constantly changing roles for both the player and its opponents was a great interpretation for the role. No matter who it is, having more can make anyone a target. That was a great execution, and the "Arrrrr!" sounds were quite funny.

I'm only a bit upset because I died a bit too many times when trying to take a turn in some paths that were not next to walls. My timing was probably off half of the time, but still, I think that hitboxes could have been a bit more lenient.

Well, that was pretty much all I wanted to say about it. This would be a great multiplayer game as well, as some people have remarked before. Anyhow, [in behalf of my team](twitter.com/whalesangames), congratulations on making a very inspiring game. Cheers! :whale:

jlreymendez 2017-12-09 14:37

Thanks for your feedback @umsingelopugmanco! After all the requests for multiplayer I think we owe to you all, we will be start defining this and more soon. And we agree on the controls!controls

Thanks @cliff-lee-cl! Faster pacing? I think we agree with you, once you get use to the current speed it might be a bit to slow.

Thanks for your kind words @mosky! Your feedback is appreciated. Sorry for the bad implementation of the controls, we had a design different to pacman in mind for them but we couldn't execute it very well in the given time. We will certainly fix them in later versions, as we also add the very much acclaimed multiplayer. Is your twitter link correct? it takes me to an empty search.

ibrahimshersha 2017-12-09 15:14

great remake of classic pacman idea. As everyone said local coop would make the game more awesome. great work!

jlreymendez 2017-12-09 15:34

Thanks for playing @ibrahimshersha!

yomalolo 2017-12-09 15:57

I can see this being part of a Mario Party game with altered graphics. I like it, would make for a nice short multiplayer game.

jaimuepe 2017-12-09 16:17

Very interesting take on the theme. The movement was a bit rough but overall i think it was a great idea. It'd interesting to try this game with some kind of multiplayer.

Btw a boat got stuck in one of the matches lol. stuck_boat.PNG

jlreymendez 2017-12-09 17:06

@jaimuepe thanks for playing and reporting the bug! That's an odd one, do you know if it appeared there after death or if it navigated into the island?

jaimuepe 2017-12-09 17:17

@jlreymendez i'm not a 100% sure but i think it crashed into the island.

magmafortress 2017-12-09 22:40

Nice work implementing the AI. I think it'd be nice if the game was a little more forgiving when turning corners - I found myself stopping quite often due to turning slighting too early or late.

cubeeo 2017-12-09 23:04

Scoring-wise, I'm not sure how to win, but I enjoyed your game. It has a cohesive mood and feel to it, and it seems to be pretty unique. Well done.

jlreymendez 2017-12-10 04:56

Thanks for playing @magmafortress! We will surely revise the controls soon.

Your feedback is appreciated @cubeeo! The points are achieved via a combinations of coins at the end of the game and ships sunk.

totsboy 2017-12-10 07:26

This could work great as a local multiplayer game! I also used Kenney assets on mine entry =)

jlreymendez 2017-12-10 15:05

Thanks for playing @totsboy! Kenney's assets are great!

svr-audio 2017-12-10 15:34

Good game, the Kenney art is always good, the gameplay is fun, it is like a modern pacman, really cool work, the music and sfx are also pretty good !

jlreymendez 2017-12-10 15:52

Thanks @svr-audio! We are glad you liked it!

sgadrat 2017-12-10 15:59

Your game is incredibly fun to play, would be awesome with an actual four players mode.

There is two points that may improve the game-feel in my opinion. First, the help screen is not visible enough, I missed it until I saw it on your screen-shot. Second, we often miss our turns by taking it too early, as A player I expected that if the ship's bow was on a case we can turn, instead the midle of the ship as to be on the case.

lucas-ferrantelli 2017-12-10 16:08

WOW nice game ! So fun dude !

chipmonkey 2017-12-10 16:21

Cool game! My most successful strategy was really just avoiding coins altogether and just trying to destroy other ships. Kind of counter-intuitive, but after getting completely owned by the AI when I tried to collect as many coins as possible, it seemed to make sense to try the opposite strategy. Nice art/music and everything!

arron-fowler 2017-12-10 22:26

Nice attention to detail, the sound was particularly good (Arh) and as far as pacman goes some nice little twists. I cant say I would play it often but this little voyage I did enjoy. Want to run your friends into trees and such? Try this (Please rate it!) https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/40/run-guys

jlreymendez 2017-12-11 02:51

Your feedback is appreciated @sgadrat! Thanks! Menu and controls are things to improve agreed.. Multiplayer will come for sure.

Thanks @lucas-ferrantelli! We are glad people are enjoying it!

Thanks @chipmonkey! Yeah, that is the only strategy that will work for this version. We wanted to make the theme feel very strong like that. But in the future we want to balance it a bit more for multiplayer, feel free to drop any ideas that you might have.

Thanks for your feedback @arron-fowler! Although we didn't create the sounds (reason why we opt out of that category) we did put some effort into selecting the right audios to give the correct feeling, that people are enjoying it makes us very happy! Stay tuned maybe the multiplayer version will pick your interest a bit more. I will certainly play your game before the ludum is over.

savinvadim 2017-12-11 10:38

Fun game to play. I like the graphics and game mechanics, quite inovovative. Good job!

jlreymendez 2017-12-11 20:06

Thanks @savinvadim! Glad you enjoyed it!

flubz 2017-12-11 20:28

I like really music and the game fits well with the theme  Would work brilliantly with multiplayer!

Well done!

shyguy567 2017-12-11 23:14

Interesting game! Way to get an AI done in such a short time frame!

I am a bit confused on the mechanics. I get the basics after reading the in game text, but the finer details I still don't get. Why are the significance of the two scores? How much do I get/lose from taking ships? I tried to watch the scores to figure it out, but it was difficult remembering my score and the opponent's score while colliding and doing the math real time during play. It looks like if my ship is taken I lose 10 of the flag and 5 of the coin. What is taken of the opponent's gold?

Minor bug: If I chose a non-red color (not the first option), I continue the game and press start with the red color selected I get my old color.

I may just suck at playing games, but I also find myself getting caught on walls which was pretty frustrating. Maybe it could just preserve the last direction for the next intersection and not turn toward walls?

Anyway, awesome game.

illabom 2017-12-12 01:29

Nice game you have here. SUPER WELL DONE! Come check out my game if you like! https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/40/virus-detected

creamybacon2 2017-12-12 02:21

A fun Pac-man-esque game of cat and mouse! It took me a second to understand the game but after that it was a blast! Your game has good art, sound, and controls. The AI made it challenging enough to keep playing. The only thing that could make it better would be multiplayer! Good Job Guys strong entry to the jam.

Thanks for playing @flubz! Multiplayer will come!

Your feedback is appreciated @shyguy567! The scoring works like this: you get many points for sinking ships and a few for each coin you have. The thing is that when you sink a ship you steal coins from them so they lose some more points and you earn some more points (in addition to the sinking scoring). Sinking ships is by far the most effective in this version. Also thanks for reporting that bug!

Thanks @illabom! We are glad you liked it. I will add your game to my list, I am trying to play the games of everyone that left feedback here.

Thanks for the feedback and for streaming your gameplay @creamybacon2!

Well done! When I caught up to the winner and sank their ship I felt clever! The graphics, music, and sound effects enhanced the festive pirate mood. If you continue to develop this game, it wasn't obvious to me how many coins I lost when I was sunk. When I lost twice, I wasn't confident what strategy I would take to win the next time. Occasionally other ships overlapped my ship almost completely which momentarily distracted me.

Thanks @ethan-kennerly! Your feedback is very useful! Thanks for playing. We are thinking in continue working with the game in the future!

No sé si me explico bien.

Me gusto!

Enjoyed the sound effects and music, very relaxing, I could hit replay and replay :D Its my level of game, not hard, no offence. Although the font used in the games quite difficult to read and sometimes I am not sure which ship am I? overall, its a little cute game :D

jlreymendez 2017-12-28 20:33

@starlin Thanks for playing and for the feedback! Not many people complained about the font, but we agree. We weren't happy with it either, but we didn't had a lot of time to change it when we realized it was hard to read.
