LD49 — Unstable

Delivery impossible by Nikolay Zapolnov 2021-10-05T20:45:34Z

Great looking game, although it could've really gone next-level with some post-processing. The game itself is pretty difficult, but it was fun nevertheless! I feel like less levels and more polished levels would've also really helped; the game's very long for a ludum dare entry

Giruffled by Papaver 2021-10-05T19:40:53Z

Very interesting idea! It felt a bit too difficult, because I felt like I couldn't control the neck's swing very well, but there were a lot of cute details in there which I liked, such as the giraffe's face changing. I didn't end up using the mechanic to elongate or shrink the neck, because the controls felt a little awkward for it. Perhaps using WASD for movement and the arrow keys to control the neck could've helped me feel more in control.

Weasel Words by eldogg 2021-10-07T17:59:21Z

Wow, definitely the moodiest game I've played all ludum dare. Loved the graphics and strange creepy ambiance. The typing was a little too easy, but it was a great experience regardless

Tipsy Toddlers by Wyatt 2021-10-05T19:51:19Z

Incredible visuals and I loved how the music picked up in intensity as the game did. Little tricky to click and drag the kids, but fun nevertheless!

Feed Me Pizza! by yikescloud 2021-10-07T18:06:48Z

Controls felt a little awkward. Graphically a really nice game, but I couldn't ever get them fed more than just a sliver D:

Toy Tactics by JoeShanahan 2021-10-06T19:11:18Z

Never thought 3d worms could be this fun. My only struggle was getting the jetpack to behave properly, which seemed really sensitive and wouldn't go in the direction I'm pressing

Turnip Boi and the Forest Lost in Time by Codeman1010 2021-10-06T19:16:43Z

Not much new to say other than what's already been said. 100 crystals or a reset to the start felt really punishing. I also would've really liked the ability to press jump a second time to fall slowly. Either way, fun little entry, glad you got the web version working :)

Mt. Deep Space by Kimberly 2021-10-05T23:37:46Z

Been hearing a lot of mixed opinions about the game being either really difficult or easy. @simpathey, for example, hitting 20k points pretty comfortably, while others struggle to breach 5k. Turns out there's a great bug where my asteroid spawner is detecting gems as something it can't spawn an asteroid on top of. Greed kills, I suppose; it's a feature now!

Anyway, this project was a blast to work on, but I'm off to greener pastures. There's a lot of quickly cooked spaghetti code which I can't be bothered to unravel. That's just the nature of a gamejam, I suppose; lot of work to be done real quick.

Mt. Deep Space by Kimberly 2021-10-07T18:11:58Z

@tyler-hahn That's a great idea, actually. Kind of annoyed at myself that I didn't come up with that.

Drunk Hill by Jvdwijk 2021-10-05T20:01:01Z

Loved the effect with the camera. Short but sweet :)

Deathrail by Hotowlgirls 2021-10-07T17:50:34Z

Fun entry. Controls were a little difficult to get used to. Would've also liked something with a little more contrast to really highlight when I need to switch rails.

Collapsing Cave by SamarthMP5002 2021-10-05T03:42:04Z

Cute little game. The tutorial felt really long to sit through, which was a little frustrating. Was pretty scary when the cave started rumbling!

TECHNUCLEAR by TheGreenWorm 2021-10-05T20:09:07Z

I'm glad to finally have a good example of how to time a game with the beat :D Incredibly well polished game, great music too!

Crazy Cauldron by Quite Good 2021-10-07T17:43:07Z

Incredible artwork. Played for a while, but eventually got a little bored so I gave up to see what the fail animation was like, and I wasn't disappointed :D

GROUDOU! by Chacawott 2021-10-06T19:23:00Z

Nice little game, although I noticed the bars still going down, despite almost flawlessly doing the minigames. The little 4 key memory game seemed properly balanced, but it would've been nice for the other minigames to have been a bit faster. Had fun :)

Hack N' Shoot by Jake Summer 2021-10-05T19:47:45Z

It's a nice little game, but it felt a little unfair at times. The things I needed to shoot would spawn right next to me and killed me instantly. As a tip, I'd recommend making them all spawn at the edge of a circle around the character, spawn e.g. 1 more each round and make them progressively move inwards faster. It would've also been nice for the hitboxes on the enemies to be a little bigger. Either way, I liked the game's aesthetic.

Dank Brew of the High Mage by John Luke Lusty 2021-10-05T03:37:20Z

Pretty fun! The art looks awesome. Controls felt a bit awkward at the start, but it wasn't unfair or anything. Wasn't really sure if I was getting further or not with each attempt

LD50 — Delay the inevitable

My happy weedy farm by Marin0104 2022-04-05T14:51:19Z

Lovely relaxing experience this was. Found two bugs, which is that you can plant on the water, and that spamming interact made you unable to move afterwards. Either way, the game was super cute and very enjoyable

The Lars Mission by Honest Dan 2022-04-06T16:37:42Z

Graphics are actually crazy. Little overwhelming to get started with, but very fun. Amazing for a Ludum Dare entry

Brain Burgers by joni-jarvinen 2022-04-05T14:22:59Z

Really struggled with the lack of a tutorial on this one; A lot of controls and a lot of steps, sadly not as intuitive as I hoped. Even so, it was a fun experience. The theme, sound and art got a good chuckle out of me.

Turbo Toilet Tomfoolery! by RonanRory 2022-04-07T20:44:24Z

Fun little game. Shame you didn't have fun with this jam, although I do hope to see more someday! Might be fun to try to learn another engine perhaps?

Tip for next time, whenever you do something like this again. Downloading a game from Google Drive is a little sketchy. Consider setting up an Itch account

WASDWASDWASDWASD by Beard or Die 2022-04-06T20:09:09Z

The game looks nice, but I don't really understand how to play. My guy was barely shooting and all I could do was just die repeatedly. I like the upgrading idea, but it would've been nice if the game started a little more.. action-packed.

Train Crash by Falzock 2022-04-05T14:17:30Z

I really liked how well the game explained itself. You start with no resources and see a train coming, desperate to build a path, but can't. Then realize that's exactly what was meant to happen for you to get resources in the first place. Super innovative! Sadly I couldn't really figure out how to properly use the sideways beams, but managed to beat a couple levels anyway!

Chtonic Arhipelago by GreenRadiation 2022-04-06T14:53:53Z

Great mood! Was kind of just trying to survive, taking everything back to my fire, but then realizing nothing comes back, so that run ended pretty sadly. Major kudos for the procedural generation!

Nighty Night, Nosferatu by Shawn Moore 2022-04-07T03:43:41Z

I so badly want to give critical feedback for this game, but I'm having trouble finding anything to stick my claws into and tear apart. With that much finished in this little time, it's clear you know what you're doing. Soo.. instead I'm just going to spitball ideas as if there had been more time.

The movement system felt pretty good, although jumping on single wide platforms was a bit tricky.

I'm curious if the timing on the sunlight death mechanic would still be intuitive without the UI above the character.

A more vampire-style tileset, maybe a white sun and some leaded glass? :eyes:

The weird dithering effect on the gif compression actually looks kinda cool. Honestly no clue how that could be reproduced, but I want to see more of that in games.

Oh yeah, what does the M key do?

Horde! by Fear Games 2022-04-06T14:08:43Z

I seemed to be having some slight performance hiccups halfway through the game. I can't exactly tell if you did this, but if not, I'd totally recommend you look into object pooling.

Would've loved to see the villain actually run away a little, or pose more of a challenge somehow. Otherwise, great bit of fun!

Extremely Exteme Sports by kuviman 2022-04-05T18:32:39Z

Online multiplayer in a ludum dare game? Wow this is probably one of the most fun games I've played yet

If you try hard enough, you can win. by Rxbbie 2022-04-06T15:00:41Z

Yooo lot of fun to see the game genre we worked on be done in all sorts of ways. Managed to get to 2:17 before dying. Game gets pretty brutal at that point. Kinda wished I could've kept my shotgun all the way through, because it felt much stronger, haha

DLAY's Buffet by BinaryPrinciple 2022-04-13T02:54:34Z

Great little short game. Accidentally skipped the victory screen, so I thought I might as well play a second time. Would've liked to see some more feedback when getting hit, but I suppose that might've just been one of those things that didn't quite make the cut due to time constraints.

A random note on how you could experiment with this. You could easily tweak some numbers to increase the speed of the game, add more sheep (but make them deal less damage). As long as the sound effects don't overlap too much, the added speed and chaos should be add a great deal of fun.

Rifthoppers by Kimberly 2022-04-05T16:25:08Z

@yumahey @vgel Yeah, I really wanted to add more, but we totally ran out of time, haha!

@$162477 Have you tried holding down the left mouse button?

Rifthoppers by Kimberly 2022-04-06T16:06:52Z

@j0ye @nikolavuk @cobgoblin We're giving it some serious thought to develop this out into a full release. Annoyingly, we can't use as much of this game's assets as it may seem. Heavy development pressure leads to some bad compromises when writing code, and I'm sure as hell not going to unravel all that spaghetti, haha.

The main thing holding us back right now is that the Leveling system is super fun, but it interrupts gameplay pretty badly. We also aren't sure how to keep this game fresh for more and more play-throughs, other than just unlocking new upgrades/characters. Definitely want to juice this game to the max, adding little collision animations and sounds, more little knockback effects, all that good stuff.

If there's actually serious interest in a full release, I'd really appreciate having a little group to get more feedback and ideas from. Might have to convert our little dev server to a public one

Rifthoppers by Kimberly 2022-04-06T17:22:23Z

@lvl99chicken Yeah totally wanted to add more juice, but it was either working overtime or getting normal sleep. I chose sleep, obviously, haha

Rifthoppers by Kimberly 2022-04-06T17:59:27Z

@tentaclemax Thanks for that reference! If we're to further develop this game, having that as something to compare it to will be super helpful

Rifthoppers by Kimberly 2022-04-06T20:45:23Z

@tosmaster I actually kinda like the gun being detached and spinning around, although that does indeed cause some trouble with little enemies. If we were to ever develop this further, I think I'd have to find some alternative to those cards. They were a little too intrusive I think

Rifthoppers by Kimberly 2022-04-07T20:50:16Z

@marin0104 Yeah, you're right. The order for the projectile behavior was as follows. Pierce as much as possible, then fork once, then chain.

Also, yeah. Vampire Survivors, but also just the Twin-stick shooter genre in general.

I really wish I could've added more cards and monster variations and all that to keep higher levels interesting. Level 11 seems to be at the breaking point where monsters get faster than the player and it becomes overwhelming. In hindsight, it would've been smart to make the player character's speed also scale like the monsters. We'll probably find a different solution altogether if we are to do a full release.

Rifthoppers by Kimberly 2022-04-07T23:37:50Z

@honest-dan Yeah you're totally right on the enemies hugging you. We'll be making the feet colliders around both player and monsters a lot bigger, and also speeding up the character progressively. We're also thinking about just doing away with the HP altogether and making enemies damage the energy-bar directly.

The upgrade cards were just an idea to add a lot of chaos to the game, which tends to be pretty fun. We've considered either making the options more interesting through increased variety and a deck-builder system. Although since they are also pretty disruptive to gameplay, we might have to theorize a different way altogether. If you happen to have an idea for that, let us know!

Rifthoppers by Kimberly 2022-04-08T15:24:38Z

@shawn-moore Wow, that's the biggest comment I've ever gotten on a gamejam entry! Honestly thanks for all of it. I totally agree on the lack of communication regarding what the game wants from you, and the lack of sfx/vfx feedback for hitting enemies. I keep saying it's a problem of lack of time, but perhaps we should have just put it as a higher priority. Definitely taking it to heart, though, for the final game. The video as well.

Multiple layouts/characters; From the start we already wanted a sort of hub world with a character select and this big rift portal in the middle; The professor's laboratory. Sort of in a Gungeon style, where the character can already run around once chosen. Then a story of sorts with progression and unlocks based on challenges.

Boss fights? Totally awesome, definitely thinking about that. So far my only inspiration is some sort of big worm, inspired by Terraria, which travels from one end of the map's edge to another. Definitely going to need to make the map scale in size for that, though.

Multiplayer. Oh boy do I have something fun for you. Totally already got plans for that :stuck_out_tongue:

Discord.png

Oh, and about the music. Our composer was actually in the process of moving, so he didn't have all of his gear available to him. When it arrives, we'll totally be getting a remaster and much more. At that point, I'll happily provide a soundcloud link, or even just a direct download if you join our server

Jokes aside. All of what I've mentioned here is pretty cool, although also massive scope creep. We're hoping to do a weekly web build and share it around for people to give direct feedback to. Hopefully that'll keep us in-line, haha

Rifthoppers by Kimberly 2022-04-09T20:43:15Z

@anaxie-studio Out of those, leaderboards and achievements weren't in the list yet, but now totally are! Thank you!

Rifthoppers by Kimberly 2022-04-13T22:33:48Z

@binaryprinciple Thank you so much! More feedback and different enemies are definitely coming in the full version. Going to have a fun chat with our wonderful pixel artist about possibly designing some little robot/drone minions. Sounds like it'd make for a cool upgrade

Carpe Diem by Pomo 2022-04-05T19:49:00Z

Really fun, couldn't help but keep playing and listening to the banger in the background. The intersecting platforms being able to knock you to the opposite side is pretty brutal, and sometimes I felt like I could slip past an obstacle, but then I couldn't. Ah well, probably played this game longer than any other entry so far!

Jacob Cassidy in: Case Crimson Midnight by parkuhrmd 2022-04-06T18:53:59Z

Really nice ambience! Would've liked a little more speed and maybe an auto-reload when the gun's empty. The arrow pointing at the objective felt a little strange; should've maybe been a toggle. Hiding the trees when you're behind them was a really nice touch. Had fun

Super Mowser Bros by Guilloteam 2022-04-06T14:40:31Z

Amazing visuals! Definitely not without some bugs, but that's to be expected with such a tight deadline. Kinda wish the music loop was a little longer as well.

It might have been nice to only let a player open up a single drag/drop UI, and to simply let clicking the tokens also add the monsters to those spots. Drag and drop always feels a little clunky to me.

Probably the funniest game I've played so far, though. Love the parody idea.

Gods of Divine Stuff: RAgnarök by Anaxie Studio 2022-04-09T20:34:57Z

Had a lot of fun with this one. The cute art and story was really good, which definitely helped make getting to each next level more fun.

As for suggestions on how I'd improve this game.. An easy one is more post-processing. Another is to just speed up the game by a lot, more monsters that are easier to kill, etc. Give a bit of time at the start and between waves to let the player put down their towers.

I ended up beating the entire game with just the second character and a lot of fire, because I thought they were cute. That's kind of a problem as well, in a way. There's so many options for different characters to put down, but I didn't really have a reason to use any. Maybe there's already a thing in the game for that, but sadly I didn't notice it.

The path itself felt pretty short, or in other words, the camera felt really zoomed in. That has me worried a little, because zooming out further would probably hurt the character sprites.

Either way, take all of this with a grain of salt. For a gamejam with such a tight schedule, this was a lovely game that felt pretty finished.

The Ultimate Martian Roulette by HaaYaargh 2022-04-06T14:33:24Z

Simply blown away by the presentation of this. Everything looks and sounds amazing!

I would've liked some slightly more meaningful options, though. Looks like each option was just completely random, and the one picked refreshed immediately, so it was never a question of whether to use one or not.

The Gallows by Burn Tree 2022-04-06T14:18:58Z

Oh man the Mood of this game was amazing. The art and music really came together well.

Did notice the console pop up with a null reference, and pressing a button for the drawing sometimes didn't work.

I'd also really recommend to tighten up the movement, because it feels a little floaty; On the Rigidbody2d, tweak the drag and speed a bit, and set the interpolation, if it wasn't already. Depending on the Input system, GetAxisRaw generally helps too.

Would love to see this game developed further!

The Gallows by Burn Tree 2022-04-06T15:06:40Z

@sofignedova Of course! If there's any other problems I can help with, feel free to reach out. This game was lovely, and I'd love to see it grow :)
