Awesome little platforming game, I really enjoyed the art style and the graphics the purple pink background was very pretty. The controls were pretty good, the main character moved quite quickly and the jump height and duration was really good. I didn't find myself getting too frustrated.

Overall a really good submission for the jam keep up the good work :)

chargrills21 2021-10-05 21:54

This game was very fun, but the audio was very loud and the graphics kept stuttering and appearing twice. One more thing which could be improved is that after holding jump, the character slams down way too fast.

bangkerpow 2021-10-05 21:54

I liked the mix of 2d and 3d assets. The audio was well done.

rayredd 2021-10-05 21:55

The art style is amazing. Really well done. I also really liked the platforming style, floating instead of just jumping or double jumping.

hammerfrenzy 2021-10-05 22:01

I liked the art of the sprites, and it looks like are many paths to take (I didn't make it through all of them). The forest sprite must be quite dense though, whenever the hover runs out you plummet!

Good work overall

Nice game! I died a few times, managed to reach 100 crystals, then died again and ran out of time and had to stop.

My suggestions for the next one would be:

- Level design: For game jam games, make the lose condition less punitive than restarting from the beginning. There are a lot of games to play and rate, and I would like to see as much of the game as I can, but after 10 minutes I have to move on. Here, I played the same intro sequence 5-10 times because I kept missing a jump, so I felt like I only saw part of the game content. Once thing you could do would be to add checkpoints, or cut the game into smaller sequences (e.g. restart from last portal). - Graphics: Consider increasing the contrast between gameplay elements and the background, especially gems, for example by making them brighter. Here it felt like bits of purple blending with more purple

I really like the 3D death transition, that was a super nice effect! Overall, well done!

I collect like 100+ crystals but still game overed :( was really curious about the ending! But the mood is really good, the first time seeing the fountain and the 2d+3d scene was beautiful. Like the tik tok audio and the music too. Great game!

idenoh 2021-10-06 14:40

@500yearsokawari thank you! The win conditions aren't really clear for sure, something we'll consider in the future. The initial goal is to collect 100 crystals within the time period, but we wanted to see how many crystals people could collect so we set the timer higher than needed to give you as much time as possible to collect, if the timer runs out and you're above 100 you win.

Thank you for your feedback!

500yearsokawari 2021-10-06 16:02

thank you for your explanation, will let the timer run to see the ending screen!

magicstunts123 2021-10-06 19:14

I like those unusual jumping mechanics. My muscle memory failed really hard at the beginning. But it works great! Before looking here in the comments i thought i have to get somewhere before the time runs out. So that could be a thing to watch out. But other than that, it's a cool game imo. :)

unagiv 2021-10-06 19:16

Good job for your entry, it was pleasant to play with, well exectuted, good feelings :)

kimberly 2021-10-06 19:16

Not much new to say other than what's already been said. 100 crystals or a reset to the start felt really punishing. I also would've really liked the ability to press jump a second time to fall slowly. Either way, fun little entry, glad you got the web version working :)

memoryfloater 2021-10-06 19:25

Wow! That remix of the music in that one sub-area is crazy good. Great game, nice atmosphere. I really had to get used to the extremely fast falling speed. Felt a little lost about where to go exactly but I guess you just win by waiting after collecting a few crystals. I still searched the entire map but only found smileys made out of crystals.

essarrgee 2021-10-06 19:28

Really like the blend of sprites and 3d environments. The death animation is really clean too! That said, the character's gravity was a little too high to where I was being instantly punished for making a blind jump incorrectly. I also wasn't really sure if there was a goal point or if I just had to wait out the timer. Still a really nice game though. I had fun playing it!

anchorlight 2021-10-06 21:07

You created a very tight platformer with a lot of love poured into its presentation. All in all, not too many complaints here. I like the aesthetic and a lot of care was put into the assets and mixing pixel art with stylized 3D. I have very few complaints in terms of the level design itself, and the atmosphere created by the chippy audio and lightweight music fits the color palette quite nicely.

I normally highly disapprove of WebGL because of the input lag and performance problems that I have playing games in a browser. While the framerate wasn't great, I was able to get by surprisingly well and the controls felt responsive. Still, I'd prefer a standalone Windows/Linux release if possible.

My biggest complaint comes from the gravity. You can fall to your death in less than a second; while it feels snappy, it makes accidental death much more frequent, and when the game sends you all the way to the start this feels quite unfair. There weren't too many jumps that felt unfair as the camera was fairly reliable, but the gravity issue combined with the lack of a safety net really hurt my experience with this game.

All in all, great entry! I hope your team releases the OST separately at some point if it uses original tracks.

floppadev 2021-10-07 10:33

I like the art style, the character is cute. The gameplay is pretty good. The gravity is intense and I like it, but the camera feels too slow in comparison. Overall its a good game, great job!

gus-goucher 2021-10-07 14:16

Art style is cool, I like the background choice. The gameplay felt a little mushy and the platforming was a little loose which made it harder than it probably needed to be, but great work overall!

quite-good 2021-10-07 20:59

Really well put together game, I really appreciated the visual effects like the 2D/3D and the cool text at the beginning that you can read while playing the game (more games should do that!) I hit 100 crystals pretty quickly but didn't know what that meant, it would be nice to have some sort of indication. I also went through some levels (love the smooth level transitions) but I went through one portal and it just dropped me into the abyss. Would be nice to not have to start from the tutorial section. Overall I really enjoyed it, great work!

erukolindo 2021-10-07 21:27

The visual style is great, the mood is great, but the fact that a single mistake sends you back to the very start, combined with the character dropping like a rock the second you release the jump button made this a rather frustrating experience. Which is a shame, because the mechanics themselves are good. But after falling for the 10th or so time I didn't want to see the intro level ever again.

chillertyp 2021-10-09 14:24

Pixel featuring vectors... funny. ^^ The gravity is to high for such a light weighted character, but overall a nice little game.

real-flamingicecubegames 2021-10-09 14:39

Nice work but I have a couple of gripes. Some of the collision on the floor made the player stop moving forwards until I jumped and falling happens way too fast (in my opinion anyways). I liked the visuals and the floating though. Collecting crystals was satisfying also.

kypello 2021-10-09 17:40

I like it, the graphics are good and the levels are well made. My biggest complaint is that the jump feels really weird to me - the gravity is wayyyy too high which makes the player character feel extremely heavy, and holding space to slowly float upwards doesn't feel very natural. However I did get used to it after a while. Otherwise I think this is a very cool entry. I especially like the 3D effect on the platforms which gives the levels a nice sense of depth.

(Also, this is a very very small nitpick, but if the game uses only keyboard buttons to play, why force the player to grab the mouse just to retry after failing??)

mighty-tiny 2021-10-10 14:16

Nice simple platformer. Only thing I would really change would be to let the player press space again after falling a short distance, and then allowing them to float at that new height for a moment.

sarah 2021-10-10 21:34

The atmosphere of the game is really great, I love the graphics and the lil mushrooms? standing in the level are adorable \o/ I really loved the music after going through the rift, and also just going through the rift was a really cool feature.

The gravity felt a bit strange, kinda like dropping like a rock, only more intense. But at the same time, the jump was a little harder to control, so having more time to move while falling/falling slowing would make it a bit easier. Although I'm really bad at platformers of any kind xD

The only other issue I had was that the starting text in the air was a bit hard to read because it kinda clashed with the game UI. Overall I really liked it and well done \o/

webox 2021-10-11 22:10

Love the aesthetics and the atmosphere, music fits in really well I got really into it. The only complain I can think aboutis that gravity is a bit too strong, it desstroy the floaty feelling you get when going up. Nice presentation, neat idea, very well done!

lin-vale-media 2021-10-13 03:56

@anchorlight Thank you for your feedback on the music! It is originally made and I have now released the whole OST on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mx07HXwxCeg It was really fun to make the music and audio for this game.

c0nt 2021-10-13 14:11

I had a lot of fun playing this game, the jump mechanic especially was quite satisfying (although strange). The visuals felt satisfying over-all. I like the main sprite. However, there was quite a lot of visual cacophany between different models, sprites, textures, and colours. It still felt striking stylistically.

tetrapteryx 2021-10-13 18:39

Nice art, and I like the feel of jumping up, but the character felt very heavy coming down. I think the gravity is a bit strong compared to how gently the character floats upwards. It caught me off guard early on, and I kept falling to my death since the initial floatiness made me expect to have a bit more leeway. I think it could work if the levels were set up to be mostly vertical, but I found myself hesitating whenever I needed a good amount of horizontal distance, knowing it wouldn't be very forgiving if I misjudged.

rewzu 2021-10-19 13:01

Very nice platformer with a story. Graphics and audio are great! Fun mechanic of jumping but maybe downwards acceleration is a bit too big. I think that there could be at least 3 tries per level or per game. Restarting the game after one simple mistake might be a bit frustrating. Overall it is a great entry!

sinclairstrange 2021-10-19 15:09

Really lovely atmosphere, can't fault that at all. Solid platforming game too but that jumping felt very heavy, like I was a turnip made out of stone! However once you got used to it, it wasn't that bad. Loved how the audio built up through the levels, great touch and the story was also very nice. (Although the text was a little difficult to read at times, but nothing too major, might just be my monitor of aging eye sight!) Overall fantastic stuff!

python-b5 2021-10-21 18:56

Really enjoyed the aesthetics! The control scheme was unique but I thought the gravity was a little heavy. I also found it a bit annoying that I had to restart everything when I died.

Overall, though, nice work :)

m2tias 2021-10-21 19:08

Great art, love the 2.5D, sound/music was good. Lots of good here. The jumping is not fun. Floating upwards is slow and feels bad and I'm scared I'll fall any second to my doom. More traditional jumping would be way easier to learn. I jumped around a while, gathered 190/100 crystals, died and didn't understand what I should have done. Oh well, it was pretty good. Art especially. Well done!

skleembof 2021-10-21 19:19

This is great! It's surprisingly polished for a jam game. I loved the graphics, but I think you could have added some floating islands, trees and stuff to break up the background a bit. The music and sound effects were great although it would have been better if you had a second sound effect for the jump that you would alternate between.

Gameplay wise, it was interesting how quickly you drop after such a slow and graceful ascent. It definitely takes some getting used to. Having to restart the whole game upon death was pretty frustrating though. I think you should have added checkpoints and maybe some sort of stamina bar so the player has a better understanding of how close they are to dropping out of the air like a brick.

samuel-fine 2021-10-21 19:34

  on the overall atmosphere of the game!

wedgiebee 2021-10-21 19:46

Turnip Boi! Such a cute character! Thank you for the opportunity to play as a turnip :)

I had a tough time with the jumping, the gravity is really intense! It's a very different kind of jump than I'm used to. I think it could have felt more intentional though - it felt almost buggy, like there was some browser issue or something.

I think to make it feel better, you could do things to accentuate the really fast fall of the jump - adding a dedicated sound effect for when you're falling, stretching the character sprite a little, some fast particles when you're falling, and even a screenshake when you land - I think those things would sell players more on "this jump is special and is THE reason you should be playing this game." I would also recommend switching the controls to a 2-hand instead of 1-hand layout to help me have finer control, since the jump is so challenging. Maybe jump on space and movement on arrow keys or something like that.

I thought the vibes of the world were really interesting, and I was pleasantly surprised by that 3d model in the middle! Really cool! Also the perspective-y game over effect is cool!
