Nice game. I like to much the highscore idea

wouter52 2022-04-05 08:45

@iva1 oh cool! My first review! I just updated the HTML, so the page around the game looks like the rest of my website. Then I tested the scoring again and saw your name in the highscores. I must say: that is cool!

Later today I'll check out your game, thanks for your feedback :-)

castoor 2022-04-05 18:30

GG ! Nice run ! Score management online, doom graphics and a nice horror music ! :D

wouter52 2022-04-05 18:39

@castoor Thank you very much! The music is litteraly two notes, but it adds to the admosphere indeed! The scoremanagement was lots of fun to write :-)

fredrik-rosell 2022-04-05 18:56

Love the idea and old-school feel. I was unbelievably bad at the game, so I will not quit my day job and become a professional SensenCemetary quit yet. Maybe next year. The attention to detail in the initial parts (name, select tombstone, and even draw on it!) was a very nice surprise.

hcs-hades 2022-04-05 18:58

High scores at the end are cool!

Found the game pretty tricky - took me a couple plays to understand what I was doing even with the tutorial.

The mood was great and definitely had me wanting to run for my life!

wouter52 2022-04-05 19:14

@fredrik-rosell thank you very much! I had lots of fun designing that part :-) I think it is important to really let the player know that their run has a lasting impression on the game, and thus on all future players :-)

@hcs-hades The game is a bit hard indeed, I think that it gets easier every time, because you get to know the layout :-) I did not have time to balance it out a bit more. Maybe the levelseed could have been diffrent, so there is less confusing junctions where you can get stuck. In theory the game is endless

nyanpierre 2022-04-05 19:16

it's a bit hard x) but I liked the idea of seeing the graves of others and being able to personalize it! it gives an almost community side to the game

wouter52 2022-04-05 19:35

@nyanpierre thank you! It is hard to cheat death :p I'll keep that in mind next time, once you get the hang of it, it gets better. But I agree that this game is a bit unforgiving. The speed of Sensenmann and the confusing level layout does not help. Hope you had fun though! The first part of the world will be nice and full of Tombstones ^^"

flawed-gamer 2022-04-05 20:47

The graves were a great touch and the sound getting louder as he got closer was terrifying.

wouter52 2022-04-05 20:50

Yess, mission accomplished then ^^ Thank you for your feedack @flawed-gamer !

julienmc 2022-04-05 21:16

The concept was simple but really well done! I didn't notice the tombstones too much since I was too busy running away but it was fun to play!

fupi 2022-04-05 21:54

Damn this is so hard!!! I like the aesthetic and the gameplay, but just a few things I think could be better: - This game would benefit a lot from stereo panning of the audio to where the Sensenmann is. I never felt like I could really know where he is, and the tutorial kinda made me expect he'd always be behind me. - When the game starts you have to click the screen to activate the mouse cursor movement, but that also makes you waste your initial rock. - It seems to lag a lot whenever I hit a tree. - The gravestone customization is a pretty neat and impressive idea! Ultimately kinda pointless though since you can't see anything running wildly through the map xd

ralfz 2022-04-06 09:01

Really love the gravestones and highscores, though would be nice for a retry option after you died with the same name!

0x-void-x0 2022-04-06 10:14

the scariest game I played so far lol, no because the jumpscare but baucause of the anticipation, just waiting for the moster to get me at any moment lol. I really like the atmosphere and the "design your grave" thing it's pretty unique, as a fan of the horror genre of game I think this game is awesome!

peter-ondus 2022-04-06 10:53

The music, mood graphics and grave paintings are great. That being said, I tried playing this a couple times, but I could never tell where Sensenmann is except for in the tutorial (which is a lovely thing to have). Even though i pressed shift the camera didn't rotate towards him and so I ran directly at him at least 80% of the time.

very-bad-bunny-studio 2022-04-06 12:38

I tried about 10 times, but I couldn't get past 19th place =(.

I found the music scheme increasing as death arrives a great idea, but sometimes I didn't see death coming (even using shift) and lost, maybe it came from the sides.

I also didn't understand how that map below works, and I ended up getting lost and falling into some dead ends.

Congratulations!

wouter52 2022-04-06 18:13

@julienmc Thank you! I agree, I did not think about that ^^" But the idea that your tombstone is in the game is awesome though :-)

wouter52 2022-04-06 18:20

@fupi Thank you for your honest feedback! I was planning to fix a view little non-gameplay-related issues and your feedback helped :-)

I just released version 1.1, the following of your feedback made it in: - The game knows now if the mouse is capured, if not then it won't throw your stone - I made some performance improvements, hopefully it helps. I don't know if the tree problem will be fixed with that. The game is designed so that trees will slow you down, maybe you mean that?

The audio panning would be awesome! I just looked it up, but it is a little complex to add afterwards I think. Still, I'll keep it in mind for the next jam!

And yes, the tombstones just whizz by as you run for your life ^^" I did not think about that, but the feature is awesome indeed! I like that players can have a lasting impression on the game. It's like a little piece of LD history that gets preserved this way

wouter52 2022-04-06 18:21

@ralfz Thank you Thank you! I just released 1.1 (only non-gameplay related changes), I added your feedback. You can now restart the level from within the game :-)

wouter52 2022-04-06 18:24

@0x-void-x0 thank you very much! I think the best horrormovies never show the actual monster, your mind can make you much more scared that way

wouter52 2022-04-06 18:29

@peter-ondus Thank you for your feedback! I think the tutorial made a wrong impression. I fixed it in version 1.1. The shift key let's you look behind. So if the Sensenmann is not directly behind you, you won't see him. I changed the text in the tutorial :-)

I'll take a look if I can find why you ran directly into him, that sounds scary!

wouter52 2022-04-06 18:32

@very-bad-bunny-studio Thank you! You did pretty well, as you are in the top 20 of the best players :D The map below was made to be a bit cryptic, but I think it is a bit too cryptic right now. However, that would be a change that I would consider a change in features, and not a 'bugfix', I'll try to incorperate your feedback in a special post-jam version of this game :-)

peter-ondus 2022-04-06 19:02

@wouter52 nice, that explains a lot. If i'm honest i think it's either just me being me or the fact that it's just hard to see where he is (coming from)

fupi 2022-04-06 19:20

@wouter52 Nice! Glad to know my feedback helped. And the tree thing, was honestly just a guess.. I know the trees and bushes slow you down, but sometimes the game just felt like it froze completely for a while until I got jumped by the Sensen. The tree thing might be just a coincidence, might be actually nothing

wouter52 2022-04-06 19:24

@fupi well.. I experienced it a view times durning development, so I was a little on edge for anyone who would mention something similar  Good luck! I see that you also need a little bit more before getting 20 ratings

willoxs 2022-04-06 20:24

Oh that is a very hands on approach to the theme xD

That said i think its one of the really good interpretations. And it actually manages to create a sense of horror when playing.

The problem is: i suck at the game and die after at most 20 seconds everytime. I feel like the level layout is so confusing and combined with the nice retro but hard to make out graphics makes for a tough time. Maybe the speed could be a bit lower as looking back would be a cool mechanic if i wouldnt bump into something immediately.

Also like the tombstone idea its a nice little way to impress me.

artificial-isabel 2022-04-07 12:44

came here to find that dandelion :smirk:

wouter52 2022-04-07 15:56

@willoxs thank you for your in-depth feedback! That idea stuck with me from the day the final voting round was public ^^

wouter52 2022-04-07 15:57

@artificial-isabel did you find it? There are a lot of them! You might even say, infinite amound of dandelions

wouter52 2022-04-07 16:01

@hcs-hades @nyanpierre @fupi @very-bad-bunny-studio @willoxs

I would like you all to know that I added an option in-game that makes it a bit easier (post-jam version), when starting the game, you can press "P" and then the game will be a bit more forgiving. The movement is a bit slower, the Sensenmann is a bit slower and the minimap will be less cryptic

If you make it into the top 10, there will be a special 'post jam' tag next to your score though :smirk:

stin 2022-04-07 16:45

Dude this game is amazing. When had started game I had such nostalgia for DOOM 1. Just for it i will rate it for 5 stars. Well done 👏

wouter52 2022-04-07 17:04

@stin thank you! The nostelgia-factor is big in this one, I agree ^^ Glad you liked it :-)

willoxs 2022-04-07 17:39

The post jam version is a really good improvement - the minimap is super helpful!

wouter52 2022-04-07 17:44

@willoxs great to hear! Thank you for testing the post-jam features :-)

ronanrory 2022-04-07 21:18

The graphics are pretty good, and the jingle for when the Sensenmann closes in on you is great. Though I'm not really a big fan of this one, sorry. I guess my evasion stat is awful. I was able to evade for for only 154 meters, earning my 32nd place.

But from what the description says, it's a miracle you got something like this done! You've earned a pat on the back, but I can't do that through the internet... disappointing.

lone-wolf 2022-04-08 05:22

This was neat, and quite fun, but in the end I stopped playing because the freezing/lookdir changes were too much of a pain to work with.

I tried refreshing and switching browsers/game versions but nothing helped. Not sure what's causing it. I have good internet (maybe not ping-wise) and a decent spec'd computer too.

I liked how the graves added to the look of the maze, while also actually indicating other player's death points. After adding quite a few of my own to the pile I finally managed to make it onto the leaderboard, so all the struggle was worth it

unknown.png

Great game! Here's to hoping the bug's capture is inevitable :P

wouter52 2022-04-08 16:04

@lone-wolf Thank you for playing! Congratz on your 10th place! I saw that your score has been beaten already :( The guy who did that was also telling me about the lagging-spikes/freezes. I was aware of the problem, but I did not know it happened so frequently.

I just updated the game with some major performance improvements. If you would like, you could try again without lagging issues. If the problem persists, please tell me! Then I'll look into it even deeper :-)

wouter52 2022-04-08 16:07

@ronanrory Thank you for playing and for your honest feedback! I can understand that this game is not everyone's cup'o-tea, the world would get boring if everyone liked the same stuff :-) Still thank you for playing! I think 154m is very good! I can look at the score-table on the FTP server and I can see that 50% of the runs end up under 20m ^^"

Thank you for your virtual pet on my back! That means a lot!

f1krazy 2022-04-08 20:08

I got stuck at the 288m mark, just like so many other players. I panicked and couldn't find that path you mentioned :( Ah well. A very tense runner game, though I found it a little hard to tell whether you were going to collide with something in your path or not.

I love the idea of being able to see other players' tombstones and know how well you're doing relative to them, I love when LD games have those sorts of multiplayer aspects. I was a little surprised to see so many tombstones right at the beginning!

sagiii 2022-04-09 10:07

Hello! I didn't understand how to flee etc if they were any start. I don't read tutorials so that's also my bad. Anyway I found it cool, maybe not intuitive but surprisingly being reaped is fun haha!

lone-wolf 2022-04-09 14:49

Hmmm, the game crashes whenever I get to the first left fork, on both versions (Brave Browser)

It seems to work fine on Firefox

lone-wolf 2022-04-09 15:27

I had no issues this time around. Much more enjoyable

unknown.png

wouter52 2022-04-09 15:51

@lone-wolf Whouw great score! You can be proud  Congratz!

Thanks for reporting that Brave browser has some issues, I'll check it out :-) And also thanks that you tried again and for confirming that the update was an improvement

wouter52 2022-04-09 15:55

@sagiii Thanks for your feedback, next time I'll try to make the game itself self explanatory, so a tutorial is not necessary  Glad you had fun!!

wouter52 2022-04-09 15:57

@f1krazy Thank you! I am surprised about that too! Even some tombstones the wrong way around ^^" Guess I was not clear about the part that you have to run forward  Altough, it adds to the atmosphere!

Congrats on 288m! That is really good!

shampop 2022-04-09 21:25

What a feeling you get with the music accelerating ! That's crazy ... It was a bit difficult to understand where to go at first, and it's quite scary ^^' Great job !

i1415 2022-04-09 21:32

I like the theme and your style. A very nice game overall, thank you! Very intense

gibberingtaylor 2022-04-09 21:34

This is a really cool idea-- I like the notion of seeing all the graves of previous players. However, there were so many tombstones that I couldn't really see anything-- I never found any rocks to throw. The mouse look was so fast that I often tried to turn down a corridor, but instead turned a full circle and ran right into Death. Ultimately I just kept dying right away without feeling like I had a chance. I would have preferred less repetitive music, or maybe just ambience instead.

Still, I like the aesthetic, fast pace, and the generally spooky vibe.

lolopupka 2022-04-10 09:17

the idea of being able to see other players’ tombstones is just great I'm very inspired with it! Great game overall a lot of cool details makes this game even greater :)

piotrax 2022-04-10 10:06

I like it a lot:) The super old-school vibe in graphics and music. Perfect fit for the theme. I appreciate small details like choosing a grave :D

wouter52 2022-04-10 10:09

@shampop Thank you for your compliments! I agree that it is a bit vague where to go, I'll try to keep that in mind for next LD :)

wouter52 2022-04-10 10:09

@i1415 Thank you very much!

wouter52 2022-04-10 10:15

@gibberingtaylor Thank you for your detailed feedback  I agree that the tombstones are a bit much when in a hurry, honestly I did not think that the game would fill up this much  Maybe I'll create a mode where the player can casually look at the tombstones, I have to think about that as I do not want people to use this mode as practice-ground, If you have ideas then those are welcome!

As for the mouse movement, I agree that it is a bit fast. That's why there is a post-jam version where the mouse sensetivity has been decreased. When you start the game and then press "P", the post-jam version will be activated. Maybe you'll have a bit more fun in that mode if you would like to try again :-)

The ambience is a great idea! This year I had as a goal to make my own music, but that was almost not a reality. Comming up with a jaws like dundundundun sound was all I could come up with in the last view hours ^^" Next time I'll make it a higher priority

wouter52 2022-04-10 10:16

@lolopupka Thank you very much!

wouter52 2022-04-10 10:16

@piotrax Thank you very much! :smile_cat:

dan-allison 2022-04-10 11:34

Well this is genuinely terrifying! The music was perfect in building up the tension, gets really intense when you know the Sensenmann is right behind you. The look behind feature was really clever too, just another way to make sure I was appropriately scared while running away!

yamaisiukdranko 2022-04-10 12:01

Very innovational game idea. First time I'm been very scared! 😱

marvis 2022-04-10 13:29

Hey what a good idea! i like it ! :v:

wouter52 2022-04-10 13:44

@julienmc and @gibberingtaylor , thanks again for your feedback. I just updated the game with a 'pay respects mode' where you can look at the tombstones in piece.

To activate this feature, first press “P” in the main menu to activate post-jam features, then press “F” to pay respects at the cemetery.

wouter52 2022-04-10 13:45

@dan-allison thank you very much! I hope the Sensenmann won't give you nightmares, even I dream about him

wouter52 2022-04-10 13:46

@yamaisiukdranko cool! I did not realize how scary this game has become as I created it  Glad you liked it!

wouter52 2022-04-10 13:46

@marvis Thank you very much :smile_cat:

itzemii 2022-04-10 15:05

I am bad in this game. I thought I am so far ahead and then swoosh ... Well done! Impressive for a game jam! I am a gamepad player, so I had a hard time with the controls, especially the shift key, so I did not get really far. Graphics is nice, sound is ... stressful. Congratulations to the complete, very polished game!

wouter52 2022-04-10 15:17

@itzemii Thank you! If I can figure out how to implement some game-pad controls into javascript, I'll try to remember to add it to the next entry in October :-)

gibberingtaylor 2022-04-10 16:02

@wouter52 I tried it again with the Seed level-- I'm not exactly sure what that is, but I actually preferred it because there were no tombstones obscuring the item pickups. Maybe if the rocks / shoes had a glow, or a floating icon it would help? I would also like a little more time to get my bearings and pick up a rock before the enemy spawns, but maybe I'm just really bad at this game.

Playing it again, the music didn't bother me as much-- I think since those two notes are constantly playing in the tutorial, I got tired of it quickly. But in actual gameplay, it's more of a warning sound than music. Also, nice job designing all the graphics!

wouter52 2022-04-10 16:06

@gibberingtaylor Hello again! Seed-mode is a way to generate diffrent levels. You can put in a number you like, and then the game will create a level with that numer (everytime you use the same number, the game will make the same level). There are no tombstones in that mode, because this mode is sort of a singleplayer. No leaderboard, no tombstones, just you and your personal highscore :-)

Glad you liked it a bit better

realtanhen 2022-04-10 17:07

Obsessed with the visuals and sound design for this! Love the idea of painting on your own tomestone. Such an interesting idea that other people's deaths adds to the surroundings!! I am, unfortunately, very very bad at this game and have only gone some 20 metres. I love how the sound becomes nearer as he comes closer, the control scheme is very intuitive and comfortable too (I love that there's an in game tutorial, also).

gamescodedogs 2022-04-10 17:17

Nice game, please go on!

wouter52 2022-04-10 17:38

@gamescodedogs thank you!

wouter52 2022-04-10 17:38

@realtanhen Thank you very much for your compliments!!

gamebucha 2022-04-10 18:14

Nice concept!

wouter52 2022-04-10 18:23

@gamebucha Thanks!

alxander 2022-04-10 20:43

Enjoyed playing this, nicely done. The reaper actually scared me a few times, I was playing with low volume. Great effort!

someone 2022-04-10 21:50

That was awesome. It compelled me to have just one more attempt... The tombstones of other players were a great idea. It did take several rounds before I figured out the route at the start. The minimap at the bottom is not great. I had to refresh my browser a fair amount since the performance dropped after a few rounds so you have a fair few similar looking gravestones from me. It would have been nice if it remembered me. I got to 5th place (485m). That will do for now.

wouter52 2022-04-11 10:52

@alxander Thank you! :smile:

wouter52 2022-04-11 10:53

@someone Thank you very much! Glad you liked it and to see a new name in the highscore

reminus 2022-04-11 17:04

Good game, I like graphics and vibe.

someone 2022-04-11 19:52

Haha, just played again and actually looked at the tutorial this time, Its way easier knowing about jumping and the boots.

wouter52 2022-04-11 20:32

@someone , wait... You achieved that score without jumping and boots?? That is impressive!

Edit! Damn your highscore is awesome, you came further than I bothered to go durning development (which means that you saw more of my game than I did myself haha)

wouter52 2022-04-11 20:32

@reminus Thank you very much!

macaroni-dev 2022-04-12 19:26

The tutorial was really polished. Really made it easy to understand the game! Loved the retro FPS look. And I really liked the feel of the "look behind" mechanic. Perfect way to handle someone chasing you despite it being a first-person game.

rolly 2022-04-12 20:06

Nice! I think it's actually the first LD entry that gets me stressed out!

The concept is simple but works well, and the idea of showing tombstones where other player died is awesome (and I'm thinking that it's the kind of idea I would love to have, to replace a basic UI leaderboard).

The visuals are ok, I'm not a big fan of the style, but they work well and they are consistent!

The music was perfect with your theme. I think there is a small issue when looping (it's not seemless, so it bothers a little bit) but it is still very nice!

Good entry!

binaryprinciple 2022-04-13 01:18

Many clever and good things in this game: the highscore, the simplified controls, that wolfenstein 3D look and sound, the "weapons" I can use. I like how you combine an endless runner with some capacity to take action and keep yourself going. Well done!

wouter52 2022-04-13 07:52

@macaroni-dev Thank you! :smile:

wouter52 2022-04-13 07:53

@binaryprinciple Thank you very much! Glad you liked it! :smile_cat:

wouter52 2022-04-13 07:54

@rolly Oops, I hope it was the good kind of 'stressed out' though ^^'

Thank you for the compliments!

erkberg 2022-04-14 20:09

Very impressive and awesome game you made there! Also, it was great having you on the stream today again! Here's the link if you want to rewatch it: https://youtu.be/LUs4mltqVVw

wouter52 2022-04-14 21:34

@erkberg Thank you very much! I loved to see how you reacted to the game
