Can't get past the first few blocks :pensive: Sleepless nights don't help. Imma try this again tomorrow when I've had some rest! Hope your LD was fun!

lighty-the-light 2022-04-05 02:28

Interesting game idea and good audio performance. It's fun to listen to others' Jam experience.

The text block and background made me hard to see where the platform is and the game itself is quite hard also.

Anyway, well done guys!

naplz 2022-04-05 02:31

super original concept. Very funny, TOTALLY BASED ON REAL FACTS!!!

atzederserbe 2022-04-05 02:35

Very good meta idea, but the game is much MUCH to hard

nick-saulnier 2022-04-05 02:45

I too am floored by the difficulty! I like the aesthetic decision of having voice-over while playing, reminds me of turning off a game's music and just listening to a podcast haha. Fun game, very funny!

honeyhop 2022-04-05 02:53

Super fun and loved the theme! Only suggestion I have is that the rabbit blocks were a bit difficult to see against the background concepts, but other than that I enjoyed it!

lancival 2022-04-05 04:12

Thanks for all of the feedback! This was our first time making a platforming-centric game, and it seems we erred on the side of too much difficulty. @drjedd @lighty-the-light @atzederserbe @nick-saulnier

We'll also look into increasing the visibility of the foreground platforms against the messy background! @honeyhop

I'm glad you enjoyed the theme and concept!

Listening to you guys debating whether Ludum Dare is "Dare" or "Dar-ay" and arguing about whether you should make a gory bunny bakery horror game makes me want to create a team next Ludum Dare just to see what weird crap we come up with. 😄

There was a *lot* of dialogue content in the game, so as I played I jotted down some notes and thoughts:

Change-My-Mind.jpg

- The particles created by the player are a beautiful touch, as is the changing background, it really adds some good graphical touches to a game otherwise mainly made from geometric shapes! - Nice plug for A Taste Of The Past haha, I still need to go play the new-and-improved full version once Ludum Dare ends.

Screenshot 2022-04-05 000333.png

- This ^^^ sounds like a great idea for a game, actually. I think I'll call it "The Story of Peace Of Cake Game's Life". - The music in this game in *insanely* good, I could listen to it for hours and still be jamming out to it! - The part where the spikes were added really made the difficulty curve have an extremely sharp increase, thankfully it wasn't too hard and didn't take too long to get past. - The actual Discord sounds really confused me haha, I thought I was actually getting Discord notifications while playing a game about a group of game developers collaborating on Discord.

Overall, this is probably the most polished entry I've played all Ludum Dare! A perfect difficulty level, good hilarious dialogue, and some nice visual novel-style elements in the ability to choose your own response in certain scenarios.

Looking forward to "Killer Rabbit Bakery: A Horror Visual Novel About Bunnies Doomed To Be Single Forever While Mining And Crafting The Heck Out Of A Valley To Kill Innocent Fish" in Ludum Dare 51, and its Netflix Original TV series shortly afterwards!

lancival 2022-04-05 06:21

@peace-of-cake-games Thank you for the really in-depth feedback! I'm glad you enjoyed our game. There definitely was a significant difficulty spike near the end, haha. We'll probably be toning down the difficulty there a little so that more people can complete the game and hear all of the voiceovers. And I look forward to making a visual novel horror management baking game with bunnies and fish in Ludum Dare 51!

psutarjo 2022-04-05 06:54

@peace-of-cake-games Thank you so much for the feedback and taking the time out of your day to play!

earlybard 2022-04-05 11:40

Such a cool game but too hard for me! I went into the options looking for a no-fail mode...

I'll check back in later because I really want to see how this wraps up :)

glimmer 2022-04-05 15:05

I broke the story mid way. No storytelling after the (first?) slide part. I guess i triggered 2 options. had to stop later because i got spawned under the floor on a checkpoint. solid work otherwise. the momentum is sometimes a bit awkward.

emily-pitcher 2022-04-06 18:36

@peace-of-cake-games I know this is pretty different from my usual LD game, but our team wanted to try something silly and not be so serious about making a polished game (in past LDs, we'd stay up every single night). My team is actually making a new game, and it'll be a heartfelt narrative game, so lookout for that!

furano 2022-04-06 18:48

You just perfectly described my weekend !! 😮

... and btw, it's definitly Da-ray !! ;)

juhrjuhr 2022-04-06 18:50

Really nice centering it around the whole "Design by commitee" thing :) It was pretty relaxing jumping through the platforming while listening to the chatter. Great job!

peace-of-cake-games 2022-04-06 18:53

@emily-pitcher Will do!

@furano I'm proud of you for agreeing that it is Dar-ay. 😁

ccglp 2022-04-06 19:06

To start my comment, I want you to know that you got 5 stars rating in overall from me :)

The game resonates with me a lot, I think it's a great idea and that the "background" game is a platformer (which is usually what most people do as a first Ludum Dare or as an idea when they run out of ideas) it's the best touch without a doubt it blends so well with the history

The dubbing and the way it's written seems spectacular to me and it would be a great game without the platformer.

I'm a bit annoyed by the inconsistency in the length of the platformer parts, at the beginning they are super long and from the "horror" part onwards they become very short. I got to the choices before you finished talking and sometimes I would choose without knowing what I was doing!

Also tell you that with the plug to "Taste of the Past" I just downloaded it and will play it without hesitation.

Best of luck wherever your development adventure takes you :)

psutarjo 2022-04-06 19:07

@earlybard didn't implement a no-fail mode but we did add more checkpoints and reduced the difficulty of certain sections, would love for you to give it another shot and thank you so much for playing!

lancival 2022-04-06 20:01

@furano @juhrjuhr @ccglp Thank you for the positive feedback!

spladug 2022-04-06 20:13

The platforming felt fantastic. Some of those parts (the spikey bit near the end in particular) were pretty brutal. The background art sometimes made it hard to see the platforms. I really enjoyed the oh-too-relatable story and had a blast hopping around. Nice work!

gul 2022-04-06 20:14

Nice submission. I really wanted to continue the story and see what you came up with, but I'm such a terrible platformer that I couldn't get to the 3rd fork/decision!

Anyways, great job!

polymathld 2022-04-06 20:36

This Is Why I'm a Solo Dev: The Game

Seriously though? This is great. I actually haven't seen many platformers submitted this time, so it was great to play a solid "normal platformer" where everything worked well and the controls were tight. The audio track was worth top marks in that category alone, so funny and entertaining, and letting the player make choices and putting up all that amusing background art and different music tied it all together just enough to work.

Great work guys!

jeffrey-hwang 2022-04-06 21:21

I liked the humor of it, and wish I was good at this kind of platformer to finish the game and enjoy the story. Unfortunately i just suck at it and only got to the point of picking couple selections before getting frustrated. Great job :) Loved the discord part.

alexascher 2022-04-06 21:54

Ah, how wonderful. 4 years ago, we discussed our first game for Ludum Dar-ay in much the same way. It's so nostalgic and especially symbolic during the anniversary jam. Thank you guys.

nyanpierre 2022-04-06 22:01

Its Dare :v I like the meta idea, and the way to show the story, but i think the plateform side is a little too difficulte and you need to concentrate on your jump and its hard to concentrate to the story. And maybe the music is a little bit looder than the voice actor. But good job ! i love the idea

daniel-username 2022-04-06 22:06

Really funny. Wish I had been able to make it further so I could hear how things turned out!

andrground 2022-04-06 22:26

That's quite an unusual experience! Amazing idea and implementation, made me feel like a part of a small gamedev community. I'm interested in how your team came up with the idea of creating a game like this!

psutarjo 2022-04-06 22:38

@andrground We were arguing on what game we should make so we decided to make a game about making a game and let the artist draw whatever they want LOL. Essentially everyone wanted to do different things and so we just threw everything together.

nethead 2022-04-06 22:44

Had a lot of fun platforming through your development process :D Very unique/memorable game for me, sort of played like a weird development fever dream which is a vibe for sure

augustcoder 2022-04-07 00:51

At one point, there is a LONG vertical spike-filled place. I'd recommend adding an autosave point somewhere in the middle there. ~~I still haven't been able to get through it.~~ **[Edit: Just got through that part. However, just after it there is a part with a platform that moves up. I think you forgot to set the rigidbody collider to continuous or something, because I keep falling THROUGH the platform. I physically cannot get past this.]** Also, sometimes I got to the choice blocks before the dialogue finished, and I wasn't actually given a choice (because I was stuck on the block). Otherwise, pretty good game.

thegamerasd 2022-04-07 21:05

Cool game, I like the idea of a game about ludum dare!

lancival 2022-04-08 07:58

@augustcoder Thanks for the detailed feedback! Turns out we were updating the elevator's position in Update() instead of FixedUpdate(), and we weren't interpolating the Rigidbody's position, so the player would fall just through the elevator at lower frame rates. Whoops!

evan-minto 2022-04-21 05:47

Very funny and clever. To be honest “game about how hard it is to come up with a game idea” is a kind of tedious concept but you all pulled it off with a lot of charm.

However, the platforming is pretty frustrating! I appreciate the generous checkpoints in some sections, but a combination of factors really hurt the platforming: - It’s very slippery and movement has slow acceleration, but the platforms get really tiny at times. Makes it super hard to precisely aim for platforms in mid-air. - Some jumps have very low ceilings from platforms above them, further restricting your aerial control options.

rosypenguin 2022-10-04 07:12

I was about to try your LD 51 game but the name of this one stood out to me and I HAD to play it. Loved the story playing out in the background, some of the moments are just too real (debating DAR-AY vs DARE, taking forever to come up with a game genre). I was so invested in the story, but alas I ran into a game-breaking bug after the spike section and coundn't see how it ended :( What a fun concept!
